James E. ‘Jim' Ormsby
VENTURA — James E. "Jim" Ormsby, 92,
Forest City, formerly of rural Ventura,
died Tuesday (May 24, 2005) at the
Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in
Mason City.
Funeral services will be held 10
a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic
Church, 1001 Ninth Ave S. in Clear
Lake. Interment will be at Clear Lake
Cemetery.
Military honors will be by the Clear
Lake V.F.W.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m.
Friday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel, with a Scriptural wake service
at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be given to the James E.
Ormsby Memorial Fund.
Jim was born Aug. 7, 1912, in Woden, the
son of John and Josie (McCroden) Ormsby.
He attended parochial schools in Wesley,
and Wesley High School.
Jim farmed until entering the U.S. Army
during World War II.
He married Maxine Thronson on Oct. 22,
1946, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in
Garner. They continued to live on
Maxine's family farm south of Ventura.
He painted for more than 40 years and
also helped on the farm. Maxine and Jim
had celebrated 56 years together.
Jim loved his music, playing the guitar,
harmonica and violin. He enjoyed going
to nursing homes and playing his music.
Jim and Maxine loved to dance and won a
dance contest at the Surf. He was
everybody's friend.
Jim took pride in his faith, family and
music his whole life. He was a member of
St. Boniface Catholic Church, and the
Knights of Columbus Counsel No. 7897 of
St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner,
and enjoyed singing in the church choir.
Jim is survived three daughters: Kathy
Meinecke and her husband, Don, Forest
City, Karen Purcell and her husband,
Dan, Clear Lake, and Joan Losey and her
husband, Brad, Clear Lake; seven
grandchildren: Christopher and Jennifer
Meinecke, Michael and special friend,
Carmen, Matthew, Benjamin and Rachel
Purcell and Courtney Losey; one sister,
Mary Ormsby, Sacramento, Calif.; and
many special cousins.
Jim was preceded in death by his
parents, wife Maxine on Oct. 5, 2003;
grand-daughter, Sara Purcell; brother,
Joe Ormsby; sister, Eileen Kearney; and
one infant sister.

Leona Mae Wenzel
BELMOND — Leona Mae Wenzel, 92, of
Belmond passed away Monday (May 23,
2005) at Belmond Health Care Center in
Belmond.
Funeral services for Leona Wenzel will
be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John
Lutheran Church in Belmond with Pastor
Lowell H. Halvorson officiating. Burial
will be in the Belmond Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m.
today at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111
Luick's Lane S. in Belmond, and one hour
prior to services on Friday at the

Leona Mae Koenen Wenzel was born on May
15, 1913, on the family farm near
Meservey to parents John and Annie
Eckhoff Koenen.
She attended school through eighth grade
in Meservey. After school, she helped on
the family farm. She also helped in many
homes with new babies and mothers.
Leona attended Sunday school at Meservey
Reform-ed Church. She was baptized and
conformed at St. John Lutheran Church in
Belmond in 1943.
Leona married Elmer Wenzel on Sept. 24,
1940, in Manson, Iowa. They farmed near
Meservey where Leona enjoyed gardening,
embroidery and canning from her own
garden. She was also a wonderful baker.
They lived on the farm until Elmer's
death in 1970.
Leona then moved to Belmond where she
belonged to the Grandmother's Club and
Ladies Circle at the church. Most of
all, Leona enjoyed her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
Leona is survived by her daughter,
Carolyn (Robert) Wenzel of Alexander;
two sons: Merlin, (Kathryn) Wenzel of
Phoenix, Ariz., and Gene (Karen) Wenzel
of Mount Pleasant; 17 grandchildren; 22
great-grandchildren; one
great-great-granddaughter; sister,
Phyllis Steenhard, of Meservey; sister-
in-law, Irene Koenen of Meservey; and
many nieces and nephews.
Leona was preceded in death by her
parents, husband, Elmer; son, Emery;
grandson, Matthew Wenzel; and brothers,
Alvin (Bud) Koenen, and Virgil Koenen;
and sister, Edna Trager.

Edna L. Lane was born Sept. 14, 1912,
the daughter of Edward and Gertrude
(Wilcox) Eygabroad in rural Manly. She
graduated High School from Trenton, Mo.,
in 1947.
Edna was united in marriage to Harold A.
Lane on March 9, 1947, in Trenton, Mo.
The couple moved to Mason City in 1947.
Edna helped Harold through the years
doing janitorial work at McGladery and
Pullen. She also cleaned several houses
in the area throughout the years.
Survivors include her husband, Harold,
of Mason City; daughter, Diana Sable and
friend, Jerry, of Mason City; sons, Jim
Lane and Pam Lane of Jackson, Tenn.,
Steve A. Lane and wife, Nancy, of Mason
City; daughter-in-law, Dixie Lane of
Rockford; 10 grandchildren; 12
great-grandchildren; brother, Richard

Denise Koci
LINCOLN, Neb. — Denise A. Koci, 60, of
Lincoln, Neb., devoted wife and mother,
died Tuesday (May 24, 2005) at her home
after a long battle with cancer.
Denise was born in Garner, Iowa, to
Robert and Alice Blank. She was a past
employee with J.C. Penny as the gift
registry consultant.
She was a member of Sheridan Lutheran
Church.
Denise was a devoted wife, mother,
sister, grandmother, and friend to many
and will truly be missed by those who
knew her.
She is survived by husband, Gene, of

Herb took great
pleasure and

providing for
his family. He
will be best
remembered by
his family as
being strong,
courageous,
honest,
hardworking and

wonderful and
unique sense of
humor.

love for
farming,

and fishing. He
was an
accomplished
carpenter,

in Sibley.

Helen Harriet (Buysman)
Van Engen was born May
1, 1923, at Sanborn,
Iowa, the daughter of
James and Flora
(Elgersma) Buysman.
Helen grew up in the
Sanborn and Melvin
areas, where she
received her education.
On Nov. 27, 1947, she
was united in marriage
to George Van Engen in
Sibley, Iowa. The couple
made their home in
Lennox, S.D., and later
they moved to Sibley,
where they raised their
family. Helen worked for
Osceola Community
Hospital as a
housekeeper for 35
years. In 1993, Helen's
husband, George, died,
ending their marriage of
47 years. She
continued to live in
their home, where she
kept very active.
Helen enjoyed life and
people, especially her
grandchildren. She
enjoyed spending time at
the summer cabin on
Spirit Lake, sitting
around a camp fire,
going to rummage sales,
quilting, "bling-bling"
jewelry, shopping,
fishing, going on bus
trips, walking her dogs,
Babe and Peppy, and
loved her bird, Petey.
Helen was a member of
First Reformed Church in
Sibley. She had a deep
determination and when
she was diagnosed with
cancer that
determination stayed
with her until the end.
Helen died this past
Wednesday evening, May
25, 2005, at her home in
Sibley with her family
by her side.
She is survived by her
children; Theola and her
husband, Bill Van
Wettering, of Forest
City, Jim and his wife,
Pauline Van Engen, of
Sibley, Gloria and her
husband, Steve Eddy, of
Hinton, and Tim and his
wife, Noel Van Engen, of
Lake Park, Iowa; 14
grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren;
along with one brother,
Norman (Tina) Buysman of
Sioux Falls, S.D.; and
two sisters: Joyce
(Gerrit) Meyer of
Worthington, Minn., and
Evelyn (Lloyd) Runia of
Sibley.
Helen was preceded in
death by her parents,
James and Flora;
husband, George; two
grandchildren: Lesley
Ann Eddy and Tyler
Steven Eddy; and

Ferman A. Heinen was
born Feb. 21, 1919, in
Milo, Iowa, the son of
August and Flossie
Clanton Heinen.
He attended parochial
school in St. Benedict.
After his schooling, he
stayed home to work on
the farm.
On Jan. 3, 1939, Ferman
was united in marriage
to Imelda Foertsch at
St. Joseph Catholic
Church in Wesley, Iowa.
After their marriage,
the couple lived in the
area where Ferman worked
as a farmhand. Ferman
joined the military
where he served in the
U.S. Army until being
honorably discharged in
1945. He returned to the
Algona area where he
worked highway
maintenance for the Iowa
Department of
Transportation for 33
years, retiring in 1981.
Ferman enjoyed spending
time with his family,
which meant the world
to him, playing cards,
and collecting pens. He
was a very active member
of St. Cecelia Parish
where he served as a
Eucharistic minister,
and usher, including
ushering for many
funerals at St. Cecelia.
He was a member of
Knights of Columbus
Council No. 952 and also
a member of Fourth
Degree Knights of
Columbus Msgr. P.P.

Ames in 1937 and to
Greene in October 1941.
Genevieve was a

several years and later
Davis Oil Co. for 13
years.
Genevieve was a member
of the United Methodist
Church, United Methodist
Women, past president of
the American Legion
Auxiliary, and past
Matron of the Order of
Eastern Star. Her
favorite pastime was
crocheting and knitting.
She made afghans for the
grandchildren.
She is survived by her
foster daughter, Rose
Lee (Duane) Mather of

grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren.

owned and operated a
grain and hog farm in
Marquette, Neb. They
also owned Clu's Flower
Shop and Greenhouse in
West Point, Neb.
Lawrence died in 1977.
Between 1988 and 1999,
Katie cared for special
kids in her home in Des
Moines, later moving
back to Mason City in
1999.
Katie enjoyed bird
watching, duplicate
bridge, and reading.

transferring to

Corporation in
Clear Lake.
He also lived
and worked in
Colorado and a
brief time in
North Carolina,
before beginning
his work for
Fieldstone
Cabinetry for
many years in
Northwood.
His last
employment was
as an insurance
agent with Farm
Bureau for two
years prior to
becoming ill.
Dan moved to
rural Kensett in
2000 where he
loved helping
with farming,
and spending
time in his shop
with various
projects.
He was a member
of Bethany
Lutheran Church
in Kensett.

Allen Watson Struthers
CLARION — Allen Watson Struthers, 54, of Clarion, passed away Saturday (May 28, 2005) at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Clarion, with Pastor Don Morrison officiating.
A gathering for family and friends will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church, 201 Third Ave N.E. in Clarion.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial gifts may be made to the Allen Struthers Memorial Fund.
Allen Watson Struthers, the son of Ralph and LaVonna (Hansen) Struthers was born Sept. 12, 1950, on a farm west of Ottosen in Humboldt County. He was raised and educated in West Bend. He graduated fromWest Bend High School in 1969. He attended Emmetsburg Community College and Iowa Central Community College, where he studied Agricutural Business. He later completed a Management Development Program in 1977 at Iowa Central in Fort Dodge.
On July 10, 1970, Allen married Dorothy Schafer at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in West Bend. To this union three daughters were born: Lucretia Marie, Stephanie Kae, and Alaina Marie.
In 1970, Allen and Dorothy made their home in Ottsen where Allen worked and later managed the Ottosen Elevator. In 1984, the family moved to Clarion where Allen became the new manager of the Clarion Co-op. Allen helped this one-site co-op grow to six locations. He lead North Central Co-op as general manager until his retirement in 2003.
Allen served as a chief for the Ottosen Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Clarion United Methodist Church, the Clarion Lions Club, served on the Clarion City Council, and was also a member of the Iowa Institute of Cooperatives , and was active in several agricultural related businesses.
Allen enjoyed traveling, being outdoors farming, golfing, and grilling. His favorite time was spent with his family, especially grandchildren.
Allen Struthers is survived by his wife, Dorothy Struthers, of Clarion; three children, Lucretia Marie (Bill) Hosfelt, of Massena, Stephanie Kae (Rob) Ticknor, of Massena, and Alana Marie Struthers, of Clarion; six grandchildren, Alicia and Keagan Hosfelt, Trace, Drew, Macy and Cade Ticknor; his mother, LaVonna Struthers of West Bend; a brother, Ronald (Dorothy) Struthers, of Arvada, Colo.; three sisters, Virginia Anderson, of Ames, Beverly Jensen, of Sibley, and Vera Jean (Blake) Banwart, of West Bend; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Allen was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Struthers.

CHARLES CITY — Ivan Lokenvitz, 87, of Charles City, died Monday (May 30, 2005) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
Funeral services for Ivan Lokenvitz will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, with Pastor Solomon Odoom, of the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home and will continue one hour prior to services on Thursday.
The family suggests memorials be directed to the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church or the Easy Lift Fund at the Salsbury Baptist Home.
