James E. ‘Jim' Ormsby

VENTURA — James E. "Jim" Ormsby, 92, Forest City, formerly of rural Ventura, died Tuesday (May 24, 2005) at the  Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services   will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1001 Ninth Ave S.  in Clear Lake. Interment will be at Clear Lake Cemetery. 

Military honors will be by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, with a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be given  to the James E. Ormsby Memorial Fund.

Jim was born Aug. 7, 1912, in Woden, the son of John and Josie (McCroden) Ormsby. He attended parochial schools in Wesley, and Wesley High School.

Jim farmed until entering the U.S. Army during World War II.

He married Maxine Thronson on Oct. 22, 1946, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. They continued to live on Maxine's family farm south of Ventura. He painted for more than 40 years and also helped on the farm. Maxine and Jim had celebrated 56 years together.

Jim loved his music, playing the guitar, harmonica and violin. He enjoyed going to nursing homes and playing his music. Jim and Maxine loved to dance and won a dance contest at the Surf. He was everybody's friend.

Jim took pride in his faith, family and music his whole life. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus Counsel No. 7897 of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner, and enjoyed singing in the church choir.

Jim is survived three daughters: Kathy Meinecke and her husband, Don, Forest City, Karen Purcell and her husband, Dan, Clear Lake, and Joan Losey and her husband, Brad, Clear Lake; seven grandchildren: Christopher and Jennifer Meinecke, Michael and special friend, Carmen, Matthew, Benjamin and Rachel Purcell and Courtney Losey; one sister, Mary Ormsby, Sacramento, Calif.; and many special cousins.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, wife Maxine on Oct. 5, 2003; grand-daughter, Sara Purcell; brother, Joe Ormsby; sister, Eileen Kearney; and one infant sister.

Leona Mae Wenzel


BELMOND — Leona Mae Wenzel, 92, of Belmond passed away Monday (May 23, 2005) at Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

Funeral services for Leona Wenzel will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond with Pastor Lowell H. Halvorson officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane S. in Belmond, and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Leona Mae Koenen Wenzel was born on May 15, 1913, on the family farm near Meservey to parents John and Annie Eckhoff Koenen.

She attended school through eighth grade in Meservey. After school, she helped on the family farm. She also helped in many homes with new babies and mothers.

Leona attended Sunday school at Meservey Reform-ed Church. She was baptized and conformed at St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond in 1943.

Leona married Elmer Wenzel on Sept. 24, 1940, in Manson, Iowa. They farmed near Meservey where Leona enjoyed gardening, embroidery and canning from her own garden. She was also a wonderful baker. They lived on the farm until Elmer's death in 1970.

Leona then moved to Belmond where she belonged to the Grandmother's Club and Ladies Circle at the church. Most of all, Leona enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Leona is survived by her daughter, Carolyn (Robert) Wenzel of Alexander; two sons: Merlin, (Kathryn) Wenzel of Phoenix, Ariz., and Gene (Karen) Wenzel of Mount Pleasant; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sister, Phyllis Steenhard, of Meservey; sister- in-law, Irene Koenen of Meservey; and many nieces and nephews.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Elmer; son, Emery; grandson, Matthew Wenzel; and brothers, Alvin (Bud) Koenen, and Virgil Koenen; and sister, Edna Trager.

Edna L. Lane


MASON CITY — Edna L. Lane, 77, of Mason City died Monday (May 23, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Assembly of God Church, 1301 N. Carolina Ave., with the Rev. Clyde W. Harvey officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home,  111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Memorials may be directed to the Edna L. Lane Memorial Fund.

Edna L. Lane was born Sept. 14, 1912, the daughter of Edward and Gertrude (Wilcox) Eygabroad in rural Manly. She graduated High School from Trenton, Mo., in 1947.

Edna was united in marriage to Harold A. Lane on March 9, 1947, in Trenton, Mo. The couple moved to Mason City in 1947. Edna helped Harold through the years doing janitorial work at McGladery and Pullen. She also cleaned several houses in the area throughout the years.

Survivors include her husband, Harold, of Mason City; daughter, Diana Sable and friend, Jerry, of Mason City; sons, Jim Lane and Pam Lane of Jackson, Tenn., Steve A. Lane and wife, Nancy, of Mason City; daughter-in-law, Dixie Lane of Rockford; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Richard Garl of Quincey, Ill.; cousins, Claude Miller of Cedar Falls, and Ernest Dean Campbell of Cameron, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, three half brothers, one sister, two half sisters, and a son, Lewis.

Denise Koci


LINCOLN, Neb. — Denise A. Koci, 60, of Lincoln, Neb., devoted wife and mother, died Tuesday (May 24, 2005) at her home after a long battle with cancer.

Denise was born in Garner, Iowa, to Robert and Alice Blank. She was a past employee with J.C. Penny as the gift registry consultant.

She was a member of Sheridan Lutheran Church.

Denise was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend to many and will truly be missed by those who knew her.

She is survived by husband, Gene, of Lincoln, Neb.; daughter, Karen Howard and her husband, Aaron; grandson, Rylan Kevin, all of Lincoln, Calif.; brothers and sisters- in-law, Robert and Dorothy Blank, Urbandale, Iowa; and Charles and Glinda Blank, Brenham, Texas; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jack and Donna Koci, Mason City, Iowa; aunt, Eleanor Ness, Lake Mills, Iowa; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by parents and son, Kevin.

Celebration of life will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Sheridan Lutheran Church, 70th and Old Cheney, Lincoln, Neb., with the Rev. Tony Danielson officiating.

Visitation will be held from noon until 8 p.m. Friday with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m.  at Wadlow Rozanek Funeral Home, 5200 R. St. in Lincoln, Neb. Interment will be held at a later date at Rocklin Cemetery in Rocklin, Calif.

MASON CITY — Herbert E. "Herb" Knecht, 80, of 1469 Victory Ave., Charles City, died Wednesday (May 25, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane in Charles City, with the   Rev. Carl A. Ries presiding. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery    in Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City, with a rosary recited at 4:30 p.m. by the St. Rose Circle and the Scripture wake service to follow at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to Mass on Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Social Hall.

CLARION — Loretta Shillington, 86, of Clarion, died Wednesday (May 25, 2005) at her home in Clarion.

NEW HAMPTON — Raymond M. Bachman Sr., 81, of New Hampton died Tuesday (May 24, 2005) at Cedar Valley Hospice in Waterloo.

WHITTEMORE — John "Jack" Henry, 66, of Whittemore died Tuesday    (May 24, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Whittemore with Pastor Victor Ramaeker officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery in Whittemore.

Herbert E. ‘Herb' Knecht

CHARLES CITY —   Herbert E. "Herb" Knecht, 80, of 1469 Victory Ave., Charles City, died early Wednesday morning, (May 25, 2005) at the Mercy Medical  Center- North Iowa in Mason City.

Herbert Edward Knecht was born Aug. 24, 1924, in Whittemore, to Joseph and Josephine (Derner) Knecht. He attended school in Whittemore.

On Feb. 14, 1950, Herb was united in marriage to Esther M. Eischeid in     St. Cecelia's Catholic Church at Algona. The couple lived in the Algona area until moving to Charles City in 1962, where they have made their home for the last 43 years. Herb farmed in the Charles City area until retiring in 1983, at which time his sons took over the farm duties.

Herb took great pleasure and pride in providing for his family. He will be best remembered by his family as being strong, courageous, honest, hardworking and having a wonderful and unique sense of humor.

Some of Herb's interests, passions and leisure activities included his love  for farming, cruising around on his John Deere "gator" and fishing. He was  an accomplished carpenter, enjoyed woodworking and just simply tinkering around the family farm. Herb will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Herb's life are his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Esther M. Herb is also survived by one brother, Edwin Knecht of Bode, Iowa.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Arnold and Wilbur Knecht, and one niece.

Michael Thomas Phalen


CEDAR FALLS — Mike Thomas Phalen was born Dec. 11, 1938, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Thomas and Mabel (Barney) Phalen. He graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in Mason City in 1957 and later attended Loras College and NIACC in Mason City.

On April 25, 1959, he was united in marriage to Carla G. Scharpff at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene.

He worked for Deere and Co. for seven years and later co-owned Hood and Phalen Insurance, retiring in 1994.

He was a member of the State Independent Insurance Agents, past president of the Cedar Falls Independent Insurance Agents Association, on the Trees Board of the Cedar Falls Utilities, member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Patrick Catholic Church, where he had served as past president of the Parish Council.

Mike is survived by his wife, Carla, of Cedar Falls; son, Patrick B. Phalen; daughter-in-law, Stephannie C. Phalen of West Des Moines; granddaughters, Kayla and Lauren Phalen of West Des Moines; sister, Jane "Midge" VerHelst of Black Hawk, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews.

Mike died Wednesday (May 25, 2005) at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, John M. Phalen; brother, Dr. Patrick Phalen; and aunt, Jane Phalen, who raised Mike.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Falls, with interment in the Fairview Cemetery in Cedar Falls.

Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. today at the Richardson Funeral Home, 615 Main St., Cedar Falls, where family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. Scripture service.

NORA SPRINGS — Lois M. Leininger, 87, of Nora Springs died Thursday (May 26, 2005) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 101 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs, with Pastor Thomas Healey, St. James Lutheran Church of Mason City, officiating. Burial will be at the Park Cemetery in Nora Springs.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Lois Marie Leininger was born Oct. 8, 1917, at Moingona, a daughter of Edgar and Louisa (Greene) Stoneburner. Lois attended school in Moin-gona.

She married Herbert E. Leininger on Dec. 4, 1938, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Ogden. The couple farmed in the Ogden area until 1957, when they moved to Nora Springs and farmed. Lois also volunteered at the Nora Springs Care Center. She loved helping people.

Lois enjoyed sewing, especially making drapes, reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, playing card games, fishing and cooking.

She was a member at the St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Nora Springs. She served on the church board and various circles at St. Luke's.

She will be greatly missed by her three children, Roger (JoAnne) Leininger, Nora Springs; Helen (Lee) Huber, Elk River, Minn.; and Doris (John) Schmitt, Clive; seven grandchildren, Stephen Leininger, Kristine Overturf, Jason Leininger, Jon Huber, Lisa Huber, Jeremy Kraninger, and Jennifer Owens; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Herbert in 1993; and four brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at First Reformed Church in Sibley   with the Rev. Gary Van Heukelom officiating. Burial will follow in Holman Township Cemetery at Sibley.

Helen Harriet (Buysman) Van Engen was born May 1, 1923, at Sanborn, Iowa, the daughter of James and Flora (Elgersma) Buysman. Helen grew    up in the Sanborn and Melvin areas, where she received her education.

On Nov. 27, 1947, she was united in marriage to George Van Engen in Sibley, Iowa. The couple made their home in Lennox, S.D., and later they moved to Sibley, where they raised their family. Helen worked for Osceola Community Hospital as a housekeeper for 35 years. In 1993, Helen's husband, George, died, ending their marriage of 47 years. She continued    to live in their home, where she kept very active.

Helen enjoyed life and people, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time at the summer cabin on Spirit Lake, sitting around a camp fire, going to rummage sales, quilting, "bling-bling" jewelry, shopping, fishing, going on bus trips, walking her dogs, Babe and Peppy, and loved her bird, Petey.

Helen was a member of First Reformed Church in Sibley. She had a deep determination and when she was diagnosed with cancer that determination stayed with her until the end. Helen died this past Wednesday evening, May 25, 2005, at her home in Sibley with her family by her side.

She is survived by her children; Theola and her husband, Bill Van Wettering, of Forest City, Jim and his wife, Pauline Van Engen, of Sibley, Gloria and her husband, Steve Eddy, of Hinton, and Tim and his wife, Noel Van Engen, of Lake Park, Iowa; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; along with one brother, Norman (Tina) Buysman of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and two sisters: Joyce (Gerrit) Meyer of Worthington, Minn., and Evelyn (Lloyd) Runia of Sibley.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, James and Flora; husband, George; two grandchildren: Lesley Ann Eddy and Tyler Steven Eddy; and brother, Harold Buysman.

ALGONA — Ferman A. Heinen, 86, of Algona died Friday (May 20, 2005)  at Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona.

Funeral services, officiated by Father Paul Eisele, Father John Vakulskas, and the Rev. Robert Larsen, were held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 24, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Algona. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery also in Algona

Ferman A. Heinen was born Feb. 21, 1919, in Milo, Iowa, the son of August and Flossie Clanton Heinen.

He attended parochial school in St. Benedict. After his schooling, he stayed home to work on the farm.

On Jan. 3, 1939, Ferman was united in marriage to Imelda Foertsch at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley, Iowa. After their marriage, the couple lived in the area where Ferman worked as a farmhand. Ferman joined the military where he served in the U.S. Army until being honorably discharged  in 1945. He returned to the Algona area where he worked highway maintenance for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 33 years, retiring in 1981.

Ferman enjoyed spending time with his family, which meant the world to   him, playing cards, and collecting pens. He was a very active member of    St. Cecelia Parish where he served as a Eucharistic minister, and usher, including ushering for many funerals at St. Cecelia. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 952 and also a member of Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus Msgr. P.P. Gearen Assembly No. 2610 Algona, Iowa.

Ferman is survived by his wife of 66 years, Imelda, of Algona; their children, Louise and Larry St. John of Huxley, James Heinen of Berwick, Iowa, Lawrence and Kay Ann Heinen of Mountain Home, Idaho, Joseph and Betty Heinen of Burt, Louis and Linda Heinen of Des Moines, Franklin and the late Jean Heinen of Grinnell, Madonna and Tim Thill of Forest City, Ronald Heinen of Ames, and Jane and Tim Kinsella of Sioux Falls, S.D.; 30 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are a brother and sisters, George and Ruby Heinen of Algona, Florine Minnick of Norwalk, Margaret and Joe Jensen of Overland Park, Kan., and Marie and Jack Mears of Des Moines, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ferman was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles Heinen; sisters, Mildred McCullough, Ruth Braddock; and two great-granddaughters: Jennifer Scott and Abigael Heinen.

Genevieve Naomi Ismay was born Feb. 13, 1911, in Fulton, Mo., the daughter of Aldolphuis and Edna (Beatty) Ismay, and died Friday (May 27, 2005) at Liebe Care Center in Greene.

She received her education and graduated from Fulton High School in 1929. She attended St. Luke's School of Nursing for one year and worked as a practical nurse at Calloway County Hospital in Fulton until her marriage. On Oct. 24, 1936, she was married to George Russell Duncan at the First Christian Church in Fulton. They moved to Ames in 1937 and to Greene in October 1941.

Genevieve was a bookkeeper for Albrecht Hatchery and Greene Super Service for several years and later Davis Oil Co. for 13 years.

Genevieve was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, past president of the American Legion Auxiliary, and past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star. Her favorite pastime was crocheting and knitting. She made afghans for the grandchildren.

She is survived by her foster daughter, Rose Lee (Duane) Mather of Janesville; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband, Russell, on June 7, 1972; her parents; and two brothers: Joe Ismay and Curtis Ismay.

MASON CITY — Cathorine "Katie" P. Ueckert, 83, of 150 S. Grover, died Thursday (May 26, 2005) at Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City.

Cathorine "Katie" P. Ueckert was born Jan. 13, 1922, in Mason City, the daughter of Ralph M. and Beryl L. (Squier) Patton.

Katie attended Portland No.7 rural country school. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1940. Katie graduated with her associate's degree from Mason City Junior College, then graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a bachelor's degree in teaching. Katie specialized in teaching special education and talented and gifted students. She taught for 22 years in Iowa and Nebraska. Katie was united in marriage to Lawrence K. Ueckert in 1961, in Des Moines, Iowa. Together they owned and operated a grain and hog farm in Marquette, Neb. They also owned Clu's Flower Shop and Greenhouse in West Point, Neb. Lawrence died in 1977.

Between 1988 and 1999, Katie cared for special kids in her home in Des Moines, later moving back to Mason City in 1999.

Katie enjoyed bird watching, duplicate bridge, and reading.

Katie is survived by her children; Paul Ralph (Jane) Winfield, of Arnold, Neb., Leigh (Kathleen) Winfield, of Fort Collins, Colo., and Gary L. (Rhonda) Winfield, of North Dakota; two sisters: Patricia Fullerton, of Mason City, and Ruth (Raymond) Scott, of Mason City, 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Katie is preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Kurt Winfield; sisters, Lois Elford and Louise Gruis.

KENSETT — Daniel Erick Nelson, 63, of rural Kensett, died Friday (May 27, 2005) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City after his two-year battle with kidney cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett with the Rev. Allan J. Stoa officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the church. Following the funeral service cremation will take place.

The family of Daniel Erick Nelson has requested that memorial contributions be made to Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, or to the American Cancer Society in his memory.

Daniel Erick Nelson was born on May 19, 1942, in Minneapolis, Minn., the son of Leonard and Ella (Johnson) Nelson.

Dan was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation in the Lutheran faith. He attended and graduated from Wayzata, Minnesota, High School and also attended the University of Minnesota. He was united in marriage to Lynn Barnes in 1963.

Dan began his career with General Motors Company in St. Louis, Mo., moving back to Minneapolis after his father became ill. It was in Minneapolis that he began working for Sperry Corporation, eventually transferring to Sperry Corporation in Clear Lake.

He also lived and worked in Colorado and a brief time in North Carolina, before beginning his work for Fieldstone Cabinetry for many years in Northwood.

His last employment was as an insurance agent with Farm Bureau for two years prior to becoming ill.

Dan moved to rural Kensett in 2000 where he loved helping with farming, and spending time in his shop with various projects.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett.

Left to cherish his memory are his fianceé, Dianne Cooper, of Kensett; his daughters, Elizabeth Eley of Colorado Springs, Colo., Barbara Collamore and her husband, Jeff, of Centennial, Colo., his son, Corey Nelson of Palmer Lake, Colo., his brothers, Robert Nelson and his wife, LaJuana, of Fort Worth, Texas, and Wilton Nelson and his wife, Wendy, of Eugene, Ore.; three grandchildren, Mason Eley, Tanner Eley and Gage Collamore; his special friends, Doris Cooper of Northwood, Mark and Stacy Davidson of Northwood, Eric and Theresa Cooper of Kensett, Preston Davidson, and Trevor Davidson both of Northwood, and Warren Cooper of Kensett; his nephews, Brian Nelson, Ron Nelson, Terry Nelson, Dan Nelson, and Mark Nelson; as well as other relatives and many friends.

WASECA, Minn. — Eula Marcene Frigaard, age 77, of Waseca, died Friday (May 27, 2005) at her home in Waseca.

Born in Canton, South Dakota, on November 9, 1927, she was the daughter of Paul and Evelyn (Kittelson) Seffens.

She graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls, S.D. in 1945. She moved to Luverne, Minn., in 1947, and worked at the Star Herald newspaper.

Eula married Alan Frigaard August 27, 1949, in Sioux Falls. After getting married, they moved to Cooperstown, N.D., where she was employed at the Sentinel Courier newspaper.

They moved to Marshall in 1951 and worked at Lyco Gas. In 1966, they moved to Waseca where Eula operated a greeting service for new residents for twelve years.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, the American Legion Auxilliary and Senior Citizens all in Waseca.

Eula is survived by two daughters, Sherryl and her husband, Jackson Wilcox, of Clear Lake, Iowa, and Becky Arnhold of Janesville, one son, Marty Frigaard and his wife, Seiko, in the U.S. Navy in Hawaii; four grandchildren, Colby Hanf, Crystal Frigaard, Brody Ernewein, Riley Arnhold; one great- granddaughter, Angela Bergquist.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one sister; and one grandson. 

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Kinder-Dennis Home for Funerals in Waseca and continue on Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Virginia Midness was born the daughter of John and Gladys Madigan on October 20, 1917, in Britt, Iowa.

She was a graduate of Mason City High School in Mason City. She worked for McGladrey-Hansen and Dunn Accounting Firm, Mason City. She was a former member of First Baptist Church of Mason City, Iowa.

In 2000, she came to live near her family in Holland, Mich., and was a resident at The Warm Friend of Holland.

Her surviving family includes: her daughter, Ginger and, David McGinn, of Holland; her son, Fredrick Midness of Raleigh, N.C.; four grandchildren; sister, Eileen Olson of El Paso,Texas; nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond O. Midness in 1984.

 Allen Watson Struthers

CLARION — Allen Watson Struthers, 54, of Clarion, passed away Saturday (May 28, 2005) at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Clarion, with Pastor Don Morrison officiating.

Allen Watson Struthers, the son of Ralph and LaVonna (Hansen) Struthers was born Sept. 12, 1950, on a farm west of Ottosen in Humboldt County. He was raised and educated in West Bend. He graduated fromWest Bend High School in 1969. He attended Emmetsburg Community College and Iowa Central Community College, where he studied Agricutural  Business. He later completed a Management Development Program in 1977 at Iowa Central in Fort Dodge.

On July 10, 1970, Allen married Dorothy Schafer at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in West Bend. To this union three daughters were born: Lucretia Marie, Stephanie Kae, and Alaina Marie.

 In 1970, Allen and Dorothy made their home in Ottsen where Allen worked and later managed the Ottosen Elevator.  In 1984, the family moved to Clarion where Allen became the new manager of the Clarion Co-op. Allen helped this one-site co-op grow to six locations. He lead North Central Co-op as general manager until his retirement in 2003.

 Allen served as a chief for the Ottosen Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Clarion United Methodist Church, the Clarion Lions Club, served on the Clarion City Council, and was also a member of the Iowa Institute of Cooperatives , and was active in several agricultural related businesses.

Allen enjoyed traveling,  being outdoors  farming, golfing, and grilling. His favorite time was spent with his family, especially grandchildren.

Allen Struthers is survived by his wife, Dorothy Struthers, of Clarion; three children, Lucretia Marie (Bill) Hosfelt, of Massena, Stephanie Kae (Rob) Ticknor, of Massena, and Alana Marie Struthers, of Clarion; six grandchildren, Alicia and Keagan Hosfelt, Trace, Drew,  Macy and Cade Ticknor; his mother, LaVonna Struthers of West Bend; a brother, Ronald (Dorothy) Struthers, of Arvada, Colo.; three sisters, Virginia Anderson, of Ames, Beverly Jensen, of Sibley, and Vera Jean (Blake) Banwart, of West Bend; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Allen was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Struthers.
