remarried in 1928. The family moved to

prized for his helpfulness as building
custodian. For the past 25 years, Curt
served as usher and greeter most Sundays
at Wesley United Methodist Church. Many
friends looked forward to Curt's visits
when they were in the hospital or
nursing home. He was famously known to
the neighborhood children as "Grandpa
Gumball."
Curt met most weekday mornings with his
coffee group at Hardee's. He tended a
"Victory Garden" in his back yard since

Evelyn Peck
Brower
MASON CITY — Evelyn Peck
Brower, 85, of USA
Healthcare, 222 S.
Pierce Ave. in Mason
City, passed from this
world at 2:50 a.m. on
Saturday (May 21, 2005)
at the Muse-Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit
in Mason City.
Funeral services will be
held at 1:30 p.m. on
Monday at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N.
Pennsylvania Ave. in
Mason City, with Mr.
Chris Postma and Mr.
Vernon Spinner
officiating. Interment
will be in Memorial Park
Cemetery.
Visitation will be from
5 to 7 p.m. today at
Major Erickson Funeral
Home.
Memorials may be
directed to Hospice of
North Iowa or the
Alzheimer's Association.
Evelyn was born April
21, 1919, in Hancock
County, Iowa, to Bill
and Gertie Peck, the
second of 12 children.
Her parents farmed in
several places in the
Hancock and Winnebago
county areas. Evelyn had
early responsibilities;
assisting with the
children and duties on
the farm.
Evelyn met her tall,
dark, and handsome
life-long companion when
she was 16. She married
Henry Brower at Sioux
Falls, S.D., on Aug. 5,
1936. Their attendants
were John and Anna
Isebrand, sister and
brother-in-law of the
groom. They lived in
Crystal Lake and Britt
before settling in Clear
Lake in 1944.
Evelyn was a
stay-at-home mom to one
daughter and two sons.
She dearly loved her
"Hank" and children,
keeping a hospitable
home for friends and
family. She was actively
involved in the
children's activities,
accompanying them on
trips and seeing to it
they all had piano
lessons. She never tired
in helping her family no
matter where they were
and always got "Hank" to
pitch in also. Her first
commitment was to God
and she loved that
fellowship and
encouraged her loved one
to do likewise.
In 1980, Evelyn and Hank
retired but not from
their home and garden.
Evelyn was just as busy
and had to hurry to be
able to go when Hank was
ready. They visited
their sons' homes in
Ohio and California and
wintered in southern
Texas. Their
grandchildren enjoyed
and respected them, and
"Grandpa and Grandma"
spent good times with
them. Together they had
61 years. In 1997, due
to Alzheimer's and
Hank's failing health,
Evelyn became a resident
of the care center. She
has been lovingly cared
for by the staff at USA
Healthcare and Hospice,
for which the family is
grateful.
Evelyn is survived by
her daughter, Gerry
Brower of Clear Lake;
and two sons and their
wives: Dennis and Julie
of Brea, Calif., and
David and Mary of
Deerfield, Ohio.; four
grandsons: Daniel
(Sheryl) Kaler, Mason
City, Michael Kaler,
Nerstand, Minn., and
Justin and Jared Brower,
Brea, Calif.; and one
granddaughter, Jeneva
(Curt) Fraund, Murrieta,
Calif.; three
great-grandsons: Anthony
Fraund, Murrieta,
Calif., Gabriel Kaler,
Mason City, and David
(Monica) Kaler, Edmond,
Okla.; and one
great-great-grandson,
Mekhi Kaler, Edmond,
Okla.; siblings, Ethel

Minnesota;
brothers-in-law, Bill
(Marie) Brower, Ventura,
and Dan Spilman, Clear
Lake; many nieces;
nephews; and friends;
and one aunt, Helen
Smith of Belmond.

infancy in 1918, Glen,

Donald Wayne Hull was
born May 21, 1931, in
Charles City to John
Leonard and Delia Belle
(Cook) Hull. He was one
of nine children born to
his parents.
Don attended and
graduated from Rockford
High School among the
class of 1949.
Don was inducted into
the United States Army
on Feb. 19, 1952, in Des
Moines and served his
country during the
Korean War, achieving
the rank of sergeant.
After honorably and
faithfully serving his
designated time in the
service, Don was
formally discharged from
his military duties on
Jan. 26, 1954, from Fort
Sheridan, Ill.
"Zip", as he was fondly
known by his family and
friends, met his future
wife, Jean D. Powers,
while attending a dance
at the Castle Club in
Charles City.
They married in Lyle,
Minn. on Dec. 10, 1955.
Zip and Darlene
continued their love of
dancing, especially fond
of ballroom and
country-Western music.
Throughout the years,
the couple treasured
beginning each new day
drinking coffee
together, discussing the
upcoming day's events,
and watching the birds
and squirrels feed.
Mornings were their
special time!
Zip took great pride in
providing for his
family. He was employed
as truck driver for
Brick and Tile for 17
years and later trucked
for Allied Redi Mix in
Charles City, retiring
in 1997 after 20 years
with the company.
Don was a member of the
First United Methodist
Church in Rockford, the
Moose Lodge and V.F.W.
in Charles City, Ducks
Unlimited and Pheasants
Forever of Floyd County
and various bowling
leagues. He was former
president of the Brick
and Tile Union and a
former den father for
the Webelos Boy Scouts.
Don will also be
well-remembered by many
as the outstanding Floyd
County Senior Citizen
Award recipient in 1994
and an avid baseball and
softball fan and umpire.
Don was the last
remaining charter member
of the Shellrock Valley
baseball league formed
in 1955. While in this
league, he served as
secretary-treasurer for
16 years and president
for 20 years. Don
actively umpired
baseball and softball
games for 35 years on
numerous fields in
northern and central
Iowa.
Zip was a true "people
person" in every sense
of the word, as he was
known for his smile,
sense of humor, and his
love of hearing a good
story, as well as
telling one or two. His
zest for life was
evident as he enjoyed
socializing, he was
often named "Rolodex"
because he seemed to
know everyone, loved
life to the fullest,
cheered for the Green
Bay Packers, liked the
challenge of a good game
of cards, and tending to
his vegetable garden.
Don's greatest love and
priority was that of his
family and spending
quality time with his
grandchildren. They will
truly miss the trips to
McDonald's on Sunday
mornings with Grandpa,
his practical jokes and
having Grandpa in
attendance at their
activities!
Jeff and his sons fondly
recall fishing with Don
along the Shellrock and
Winnebago Rivers,
Crystal Lake, and Indian
Lake. It was a special
bonding for the three
generations! Watching
sports and discussions
of sporting events in
the media is a treasured
memory that his son,
Brad, will forever
cherish.
Don will be dearly
missed by family and
friends who have shared
in his life.
He is survived by his
wife of nearly 50 years,
Jean Hull, of Rockford;
his two sons, Bradley
(Teresa) Hull of Des
Moines and Jeffrey
(Susie) Hull of Woden;
his brother, Robert
(Bea) Hull of Jefferson
City, Mo.; and his seven
grandchildren: Randi
(Chancy) Chipman, and
Sheric, Skyler, Ryan,
Alex, Alyssa and Derek
Hull.
Preceding Don in death
are his parents, John
and Delia Hull; his four
sisters, Marjorie Gabel,
Joyce Shaver, Shirley
Weaverling, and Eva
Cantrell; and his three
brothers, Jack, Charles,
and Vernon Hull.

M. Dugan, 90, a resident

County Memorial Hospital
in Charles City.

Tuesday at Immaculate
Conception Catholic
Church, 106 Chapel Lane
in Charles City with her
nephew, the Rev. Dennis
Evenson, officiating.
Interment will be in
Calvary Cemetery,
Charles City.
The family will greet
relatives and friends
from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Tuesday morning at the
church, prior to
Yolanda's service.
Those wishing to extend
memorials or expressions
of sympathy may direct
them to Hospice of North
Iowa-Charles City, 1003
Gilbert St. Charles
City, IA 50616 or the
Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church in
Charles City.
Yolanda Mary Dugan was
born Sept. 22, 1914, in
St. Paul, Minn. to
Eugenio and Maria Teresa
(Tucci) Passafero.
She was the second of
five children born to
her parents. Yolanda's
parents had immigrated
to the United States
prior to her birth,
however, in Yolanda's
early youth, her family
made the decision to
move back to Italy.
Yolanda attended some of
her primary school years
in that country.
Yolanda's family again
relocated back to the
United States and she
attended school in St.
Paul, Minn.
On April 20, 1931,
Yolanda was united in
marriage to Dale C.
Dugan. The couple had
met while Dale was a
young soldier in the
service at Fort
Snelling, Minn.
Following their
marriage, the couple
moved to Dale's hometown
of Charles City, Iowa.
Together, Dale and
Yolanda treasured going
for car rides, dancing,
playing cards,
especially "500," and
visiting with relatives
and friends.
Yolanda was content in
tending to the care of
her husband, children,
and home. She was
extremely proud of and
devoted to her Catholic
faith.
Her daughter, Verna, has
special memories of
walking to early morning
masses with her mother
and sharing in the
private bonding of
mother and daughter.
Yolanda was particularly
delighted when her
husband, Dale, was
sponsored by their son,
Len, and confirmed into
the Catholic faith by
her nephew, the Rev.
Dennis Evenson in 1972.
She was a member of the
Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church and the
St. Jude's Women's
Circle in Charles City.
Yolanda is described as
a generous, caring,
loving, and hard-working
woman who never seemed
to complain about
anything. Some of her
favorite leisure
activities and interests
included crocheting
potholders for anyone
and everyone who would
like to have one,
cooking Italian food
(guarding her special
family recipes),
relaxing on her front
porch, and attending
family reunions and
gatherings. She favored
clothing herself in
dresses, celebrating
holidays, and found
great joy and excitement
in sharing in the lives
of her children,
grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. Her
family fondly recalls
that they could never
leave Yolanda's home
without something in
hand to take with them.
Yolanda's smile and
wonderful personality
will be deeply missed by
all who have shared in
her life.
She is survived by her
daughter, Verna (Don)
Shelton of Cedar Falls;
her son, Len (Barbara)
Dugan of Maple Plain,
Minn.; her
grandchildren: Dayle
(John) Hayes, Mindy
(Kevin) Shea, Patrick
(Terry) Dugan, and
Angela (Dan) Dewey; and
one brother, Lenny
Passafero of St. Paul,
Minn.
She will also be fondly
remembered by four
great-grandchildren:
Tanner and Mia Cheeseman
and Joesy and Lensy
Shea, and many nieces,
nephews, and numerous
other relatives and
friends.
Preceding Yolanda in
death are her husband,
Dale C. Dugan in March
of 1991; her parents,

son, Daniel Dugan; her
infant grandson, Leonard

Achenbach. He was the
first of three children
born to his parents.
Ivan attended school at
the Ulster Township
country school from
kindergarten through 8th
grade and graduated from
Rockford High School.
Ivan lived all his life
in Floyd County and had
a passion for the open,
fresh air of living on
the farm. Following his

determined his future
was as a grain and
livestock operator and
continued the legacy of
his father on the family
farm, east of Rockford.
On July 12, 1936, Ivan
was united in marriage
to Vera Pfundheller at
her parent's farm in
Ulster Township. As a
couple, they treasured
long trips and car rides
to sightsee or visit

Ivan and Vera were

farming operation. Since
the mid-'50s, Ivan and
his nephew, Jim Marth,
