Blanche L. Mather Crooks

GREENE — Funeral services for Blanche L. Mather Crooks, 90, formerly    of 702 Riverview Drive, Greene, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Greene with Pastor Ashok Patet officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, also in Greene.

Visitation will be from 4  to 8 p.m. Monday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 North First Street, in Greene. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services on Tuesday.

Blanche Louise Beguelin was born May 27, 1914, in Clayton, Mo., a daughter of Alfred E. And Emma L. (Mange) Beguelin, and died Friday (March 4, 2005) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene where she had been     a resident since August 1994.

She was raised on a farm southwest of Greene, and attended Bennezette Township School No. 6, and graduated from the Greene High School in 1932. She attended normal training classes and taught country school for several years.

On May 27, 1935, she was united in marriage to Eldred Charles Mather       at the home of her parents. They farmed together in the Marble Rock and Greene area until retiring in 1971. During this time, Blanche also worked at the Greene Café and was librarian for sixteen years.

Eldred Mather died on April 4, 1972.

She was united in marriage to Samuel L. Crooks on June 9, 1994, at the United Methodist Church in Greene. He preceded her in death on June 23, 1999.

Blanche had many talents and enjoyed painting, needle work, quilting, gardening, and growing and sharing flowers with family and friends.

Living family members include two sons: Paul (Loan) Mather of Fort Washington, Md., and Duane (Rose) Mather of Janesville; one daughter, Marjorie (Neal) O'Brien of Greene; four step children: Ronald (Beverly) Crooks of LaPorte City, Barbara (Robert) Lee of Rochester, Minn., Ruth (Allan) Jacobson, and Joan (Harold) Meyer, both of Greene; twin brothers: Francis (Lavonne) Beguelin of Bristow, and Howard (Vada) Beguelin of Estacada, Ore.; one brother-in-law, Ralph (Eugenia) Mather of Crockett, Texas; 11 grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and numerous great- grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; parents; a sister and a brother-in-law, Doris and Harry Ipsen; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Mehlan.

Maxine M. McSweeney


CEDAR FALLS — Maxine M. McSweeney, 86, of Cedar Falls, and formerly of Osage and Fort Dodge, died of heart failure Friday, (Feb. 25, 2005) at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2005, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with inurnment at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, both in Osage. A celebration of her life will be held at the K. C. Hall in Osage, immediately after the services.

There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established.

Maxine Marie Penney was born near Little Cedar, Mitchell County, Iowa on Oct. 4, 1918, the eldest daughter of Clinton Henry (Joe) and Thelma Lois McPhail Penney. She attended Little Cedar Schools, graduating in the Class of 1936. After briefly attending Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa), she married Robert Francis McSweeney, whom she had met in the first grade, on Nov. 25, 1936 in Cresco, Iowa. Their wedding was witnessed by her aunt and uncle, Oscar and Myra McPhail Johnson.

The couple set up housekeeping in Little Cedar and, through the years, worked on a number of farms in the county.

During World War II, along with their only daughter, Kay, the couple relocated to Bangor, Maine, Portales, N.M., and Portland, Ore. In Oregon, Maxine aided the war effort working as a welder in the shipyards. Following the war, the couple returned to Mitchell County, settling on a farm north of Little Cedar. They ended farming in 1962, moving to Fort Dodge, where Maxine worked for many years at the Friendship Haven Retirement Home before re-tiring in 1984. In 1985, they moved to Mason City where they lived for 15 years. The couple returned to Osage in 2000 where they lived until moving to Cedar Falls in 2003 to be near their daughter.

Her husband of 67 years, Robert, passed away on Feb. 20, 2004. Maxine moved to Bartels in Waverly in November 2004. Maxine had a great love of her family and friends. Her door was always open, the coffee always brewed and the table always full. She will be missed by all whom she touched during her 86 years.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Dean and Rex Penney; a sister, Ruth Penney Arnold; and an infant granddaughter.

She is survived by her daughter, Kay McSweeney of Cedar Falls; and her grandson, Michael Higgins of Indianapolis, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews.

Richard A. Hanson


KLEMME — Richard A. Hanson, 55, of Klemme, died Tuesday (March 1, 2005) at the University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Klemme with the Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial will be in Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St. in Garner and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Richard Allen Hanson, the son of John August and Ardella Darlene (Schneider) Hanson, was born Aug. 23, 1949, in Mason City.

He graduated from Klemme High School in 1968 and work-ed with Craig Larson during and after high school doing auto body repair in Klemme. In 1968, he married Marilyn Draper in Belmond. The marriage was later dissolved.

Rich worked briefly at Winnebago Industries in the paint and ship-out department. He then went to IMT where he worked for 20 years as a paint foreman. In 1981, he started his own auto body specialty paint and repair business, Rich's Auto Body, in Klemme. He continued to operate the business until 1998 when he began long distance trucking. He was a consultant and a friend to many in the truck driving business.

Over the years he restored many classic cars, but the '55 Chevy was always his favorite. He was especially proud of the '55 Chevy that he and his son worked on together. Someone once said that Rich could fix anything and was a great thinker. His favorite past time was taking the grandkids to auctions and shopping. Rich also loved Harley-Davidson motorcycles. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Rich is survived by his parents, John and Ardella Hanson of Klemme; his maternal grandmother, Lydia Schneider of Garner; two children, Shelly Hanson (Jeremy Eenhuis) and their two children, Summer and Cole, of Klemme and Jason (Patti) Hanson and their two children, Caitlin and Blaine, of Klemme; a sister, Janelle (Herman) Meyer of Mason City; two brothers, Dennis E. Hanson of Garner and Ron (Barb) Hanson of Owosso, Mich.; a special friend, Julie Haugen of Klemme; many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, William Schneider; and his paternal grandparents, William and Rebecca Hanson.

Joan Cole


OSAGE — Joan (Chisholm) Cole, 72, of Coon Rapids, Minn., and formerly of the Osage area, died Friday (March 4, 2005) at the Unity Hospital in Fridley, Minn., following complications from surgery for cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage.

Visitation will be from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday at the church.

Joan was born Dec. 23, 1932, in Osage, the daughter of Daniel and Rose (Weinberger) Chisholm.

She attended schools in Mitchell and graduated from Mitchell High School. She lived in Mason City and Manly before moving to the Coon Rapids area.

Joan was first united in marriage to George Froning and then to Bob Cole, who both preceded her in death.

She had worked at Kurt Manufacturing in Coon Rapids and later made her home with her sister, Kay Sloan, and husband, Del. Joan and Kay both worked for Covenant Home Services, dealing with foster care.

She is survived by three brothers: Leo Chisholm (Elsie) of Osage, Lawrence Chisholm (Shari) of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Daniel Chisholm (Cathy) of Mason City; a brother-in-law, Delbert Sloan, of Coon Rapids, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Inge Chisholm of Severna Park, Md., and Barbara Halladay of Osage; an uncle and aunt, Lawrence and Dolores Weinberger of Osage; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceeded by her parents; two husbands; two infant children, Douglas and Debra Froning; two sisters, Mercedes Bredehoft and Kay Sloan; and two brothers, Robert and James Chisholm.

Marguerite Schwartz


MASON CITY —  Marguerite Mary Ashland Schwartz, 83, longtime resident of Mason City and current resident of Independence, Mo. died Thursday (March 3, 2005) at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City, Mo.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Rolling Acres Free Methodist Church, 604 23rd St. S.W., with Pastor Larry Day and Pastor Curtis DeLong officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, and continue one hour before services Monday at the church.

Marguerite was born Jan. 22, 1922, in Hayward, Wis. the second daughter  of Lois Elizabeth Holmes Ashland and Anders Oliver Ashland. The family moved to a farm north of Clear Lake in 1929. She attended Clear Lake schools, graduating in 1939. After graduation, she worked in sales and the office of the Montgomery Ward Store in Mason City.

In 1943, she accompanied her sister, Maxine Eldridge, to Davis, Calif., where Maxine's husband, Reeve, was based while serving in World War II with the Signal Corps. She worked as a variety store department manager while in California. Upon her return to Mason City, she resumed working at Montgomery Ward until her marriage.

She married Russell Kenneth Schwartz on Feb. 14, 1949, at the Mason City Free Methodist Church. They farmed in rural Burchinal for a few years and then farmed in rural Plymouth until 1977. After leaving the farm and moving  to Mason City, she worked for oral surgeons, Drs. Turner and Juhlin for 15 years, retiring in 1992.

Marguerite's life was centered on Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and revolved around her family, friends and church. She was a member of the Mason City Church of the Nazarene and also worshiped at Rolling Acres Free Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School for many years, led missionary programs at both churches and participated in women's ministry programs. She blessed many lives by her gifts of hospitality, service and generosity.

She is survived by four children: Elizabeth Faron and husband, Stephen,      of Independence, Mo., Margene Holak and husband, John, of Coats, N.C., Janice Piercy and husband, Stephen (MD), of Fort Dodge, Kenneth Schwartz of Longmont, Colo. and fiancé Rosa Garcia of Northglen, Colo.; sister, Maxine Eldridge and husband, Reeve, of Clear Lake; nine grandchildren: Dan Holak and wife, Andrea, of St. Louis, Mo., Amy Piercy of Olathe, Kan., Peter Holak of Bloomington, Ill., Christy Faron of Independence, Mo., Kathryn Piercy of Oklahoma City, Okla., Julia Tew of Coats, N.C., Jesse Piercy of Olathe, Kan., Andy Faron of Independence, Mo., and Lucy Piercy of Fort Dodge; one great-grandson, Elisha Tew of Coats, N.C.; seven sisters-in-law; six brothers-in-law; numerous nieces; nephews; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Hilda L. Merfeld


MASON CITY — Hilda L. Merfeld, 79, of 1544 N. Hampshire Ave., died Wednesday (March 2, 2005) at her home in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 2502 South Jefferson Avenue in Mason City with the Rev. Joel Dahlen officiating. Internment will be in the Hampton Cemetery in Hampton.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

Hilda L. Merfeld was born Dec. 5, 1925, at Hampton, a daughter of Louis and Louise (Schultz) Kruse. Hilda attend-ed schools in Hampton. She was united in marriage to Claude E. Merfeld on Sept. 5, 1942 at Couer D'Alene, Idaho.

She worked at Phalen Cleaners and Marshall and Swift in Mason City.

Hilda was a member of the Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She enjoyed sewing, especially making quilts

Hilda is survived by her husband, Claude, Mason City; one daughter, Cheryl Werstein, and her special friend, Frank Kiroff, Mason City; five grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and daughter, Kathryn.

Arielle Zaelyn Brown


ROWAN — Arielle Zaelyn Brown, six-week-old infant daughter of ZoAnn Brown, died, unexpectedly, Wednesday (March 2, 2005) at her home in Rowan.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First Street S.E. in Belmond. The Reverend Janet Wearda will be officiating.

Visitation will be Monday from 9:30-11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Arielle Brown, the daughter of ZoAnn Brown, was born Jan. 15, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

During her brief life she blessed her family with many special memories. Her beautiful smile and playful personality will be etched in their hearts forever. Arielle will be her family's guardian angel. They will miss the opportunity to share their love and dreams with her.

Those left to cherish the memory of her life include her mother, ZoAnn Brown and sister, Zelexis Lee Brown, both of Rowan; her brothers, Wyatt and Quentin Newton of Ill.; her sister, Savannah Newton of Ill.; her aunt, Jill Robson, and her daughter, Reica, of Rowan; her uncle, Bruce Robson, Mesa, Ariz.; and her aunts: Linda McDaniels, and Becky Vedder both of Murrayville, Ill.

LIME SPRINGS — Mary Loretta Gansen, age 98, of Lime Springs, died Friday (March 4, 2005) at Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco of old age.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Chester, with burial in Calvary Cemetery at Elma. The Rev. Ray Atwood will be officiating.

Friends may call from 4 until 9 p.m. on Monday at the Conway Funeral Home, 404 North Elm Street in Cresco and at the church one hour prior to services on Tuesday. There will be a rosary at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.

Loretta was born on Nov. 30, 1906, in Elma, the daughter of James and Amanda (Weakland) Richardson.

On Jan. 31, 1928, she was united in marriage to William L. Gansen and they farmed in the Lime Springs area until they entered the Cresco Care Center in October of 2004.

She is survived by three sons: Donald (Doris) of Clear Lake, Robert (June)  of Rochester, Minn., and James of Stanchuield, Minn.; one daughter, Lois Bronner of Lime Springs; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on Dec. 3, 2004; one son, Dale; one grandson, Bruce; and three brothers: Arthur, Charles, and Raymond Richardson.

MASON CITY— Eva M. Kimble, 102, of Mason City, died Friday (March 4, 2005) at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church in Clear Lake with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North Fourth Street in Clear Lake, and then one hour before the service on Tuesday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to I.O.O.F. Home.

Eva was born on April 2, 1902, in Jeffers, Minn., the daughter of Royal and Ida (Whiteman) Miller. She moved with her family to Clear Lake as a child and lived on the family farm south of Clear Lake for 26 years. She attended school in Clear Lake.

Eva married George Glen Kimble July 3, 1930, in Clear Lake. They moved  to Mason City in 1944.

She enjoyed baby sitting many children in Mason City, including her own nieces and nephews and spending time with her family. She loved to travel, garden, raise flowers and play the piano.

Eva was a member of Clear Lake United Methodist Church, North Iowa Rock Club and Life member of Moose Lodge, Mason City.

She is survived by her brother-in-law, Charles "Buster" Lowe; and sister- in-law, Irene Miller, both of Clear Lake; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was the last of the nine children of Royal and Ida Miller. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; five brothers: Earl, Burrel, Lloyd, Orin, and LeRoy Miller; and three sisters: Elsie Bussa, Myrtle Lowe, and Addie Hanley.

Marjorie E. Gabrielson


BELMOND — Marjorie E. Gabrielson, 81, of Belmond passed away Wednesday (March 2, 2005) at her residence in Belmond.

Funeral services for Marjorie E. Gabrielson will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. The body will be cremated and burial will be at a later date in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation for Marjorie E. Gabrielson will be held from 5 -7 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane South in Belmond and one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.

Marjorie Evelyn Wolf Gabrielson was born July 1, 1923, at Iowa Falls, in Hardin County. She was the daughter of Richard and Hallie (Thomas) Parker. She was baptized on June 29th, 1931. She attended Belmond public schools and La' James School of Cosmetology in Mason City.

On Dec. 3, 1939, she married Harold Wolf in Clarion, Iowa. Their daughter Vicki was born in Belmond. Later they moved to Des Moines, returning to Belmond in 1943, when Debra joined the family in 1944.

Marjorie enjoyed being a Campfire leader, staying with her group until junior high. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. She worked in merchandising and also at the Farm and Home Publishers. Her most cherished time was spent with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her two daughters, Vicki Morris and husband, Carroll, of Avondale, Ariz. and Debra Hanson and husband, Charles, of Albert Lea, Minn.; also surviving are ten grandchildren: Rick (Angie) Kinseth, Laurie (Tom Amsbaugh) Steenblock, Kim (Bryan) Kuester, Michelle (Jeremy) Rojas, Michael Morris, Denise Hanson, David Hanson, Danny (Shelly) Hanson, Darrin (Shelli) Hanson, and Lisa (Justin) Clark; three step-grandchildren: LuAnn Brown, Kay Zahn, and Rusty Morris; 26 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Marjorie was also survived by two sisters, Dorothy Dow and husband, Russell, and Patricia Edgerton; one brother, Richard, and wife, Patricia of Franklin, Tenn.; one sister-in- law, Margaret Clagget, of Clarion; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband, Harold; her parents, and one brother, Bernard, and wife, Helen Parker.

STACYVILLE — Jane Elizabeth Pitzen, age 63, of Stacyvillle, entered into the gates of heaven on Saturday (March 5, 2005) at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn., after a courageous two year battle with acute leukemia.
 
Jane was born Aug. 21, 1941, in Elma, the daughter of Victor and Rose (Komarak) Praska. She graduated from St. William's High School in Alta Vista and attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City. On Nov. 23, 1961, she was united in marriage to Gene Robert Pitzen at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Alta Vista.
 
Jane worked as a secretary in Ames as a newlywed, before becoming a full time mom and working part time at the Stacyville Nursing Home. She later worked at the Austin Vet Clinic after Gene and Jane dispersed their dairy herd. Jane's greatest joys were her six children and eleven grandchildren. She also greatly enjoyed her pet companion, Nutmeg.
 
She attended countless school plays, musicals, and sporting events. She loved traveling, family camping trips, cooking, gardening, and baking pies and treats for her family. Jane enjoyed conversation with her family and friends.
 
Jane was a member of Visitation Catholic Church, past Northwest Country Circle Leader, member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and a member of the Mitchell County Dairy Promotion Group.
 
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Burial will be in Visitation Catholic Cemetery in Stacyville immediately following the services.
 
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, where there will be a scripture wake service at 4:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Tuesday.
 
Survivors are her husband, Gene Pitzen of Stacyville; her children: Julie Niess and her husband, Scott, of Osage, and their children, Cody and Cally, Randy Pitzen and his wife, Janet, of Adams, Minn., and their children: Adam, Jessica, and Alex, Jeff Pitzen and his wife, Carmen, of Kasson, Minn. and their children, Danielle and Rachel, Rick Pitzen and his wife, Teri, of Dubuque, and their children, Deidre and Lucas, Lori Ishman of Floyd, and her children Tyler and Taylor, and Ryan Pitzen, at home. Virginia M. Andresen was born Nov. 3, 1917, in Anselmo, Neb., the daughter of Gale and Helen (Raebel) Egner. She graduated from East Waterloo High School on June 7, 1935. She married Jerry Farris on July 22, 1935; he preceded her in death on March 21, 1970.
 
On June 9, 1973 Virginia was married to Wilbur Andresen; he preceded her in death on May 21, 1992.
 
She enjoyed sewing, crafts and traveling. Virginia was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where she served on the Ladies Aid.
 
She is preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; one sister, Cleora Moore; and four brothers: Thornton, Teddy, Donald and Kenneth Egner.

CHARLES CITY — Dorothy Beine, 85, of Charles City, died Saturday (March 5, 2005) at her home.
 
A funeral Mass for Dorothy Beine will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. The Rev. Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Dorothy Marie Behling Beine was born Feb. 1, 1920, in Floyd County, the daughter of Walter and Nellie (Girken) Behling. She graduated from the Immaculate Conception Academy in 1937. On Oct. 9, 1940, she was united in marriage to Floyd Beine, a grade school friend.
 
During her working career Dorothy was employed as a proofreader and bookkeeper for Commercial Printing and helped establish the Midland Linotype School, a new educational facility at the time; she was a salesperson at J.C. Penney; cashiered at both the Charles and Gem theaters during the four years her husband was serving overseas during World War II; was bookkeeper for her husband's partnership of the B and L Shell Station; and in later years, worked part-time as a receptionist for Bill Harrold Realty. Dorothy also assisted her husband on the farm raising shorthorn cattle, corn and beans.
 
Her greatest delight in her life was spending time with her family, which she did at every opportunity. She will always be remembered for devoting ten and a half years of care at home for her husband, Floyd, who was in a coma.
 
Dorothy was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Anthony's Circle, Rosary Society, Tabernacle Girls church choir, Women of the Moose and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.
 
Living family members include seven children: Marjorie (Thomas) Bartz of Charles City, Robert (Karen) Beine of Floyd, Victor (Debra) Beine of Charles City, Linda (Jeff) Bergstrom of Charles City, Ann (Paul) Skuster of Charles City, Richard (Julie) Beine of Charles City and Gena (Ronald) Hemann of Charles City; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Thelma (Herb) Dirlam of Los Angelas, Calif., and Marion (Joe) Snyder of Charles City.
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1994; a sister, Ruby, and her husband Walt Hobert; two nephews, Jimmy Hobert and Jimmy Beine; and a niece, Amy Snyder Brunner.

Lucille was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Cecelia's circle at church.
 
She is survived by many special friends.

Mildred Ethyl, the daughter of McClennahan (Mac) and Anna Klein Thompson, was born Feb. 18, 1905, in Belmond. As a little girl, Ethyl lived on a farm northeast of Goodell. In 1915, her family moved to Belmond. Ethyl attended schools in Belmond and graduated from Belmond High School in 1923.
 
After high school, Ethyl worked for a lumber and construction firm and also a bank in Klemme. In 1942, she moved to Hallock, Minn. Ethyl worked for the Northwestern State Bank in Hallock. She retired in 1970. Ethyl returned to Belmond in 1978. She entered the Belmond Health Care Center in 1999.
 
Ethyl enjoyed traveling and sewing. A master seamstress, she and her mother were accomplished at creating and mending clothing and quilts. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors. Ethyl was a devoted member of the United Methodist Church of Belmond.
 
Ethyl is survived by numerous great nieces and nephews.
 
She is preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Florence (Mrs. Arthur) Ruka; two nephews: Lyle Ruka and Merle Ruka; and a niece, Eleanor (Mrs. Don) Abbas.

Jackie Lynn Fromm was born June 16, 1954, in Mason City, the daughter of Otis and Betty (Rhodes) Anderson.

Jackie lived in Mason City and surrounding towns until she married and moved to Dallas, Texas. She lived there briefly and then moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where she lived for 10 years working as a nurse. She moved back to Mason City in 1996.

Jackie was outgoing and a loving person who had the ability to make you feel like she had known you for years.

She loved crafts and making afghans; her greatest love was spending time with her family.

She is survived and missed by her son, Bret Fromm, of Indiana, mother, Betty Anderson, of Mason City; sister, Connie Perez, of Mankato, Minn.; two nephews, Valenten Perez and Nikolas Perez; aunt, Nancy Holm; and her dedicated friend and companion Richard Cook.

She is preceded in death by her grandparents; father, Otis Anderson; two sons, Troy Anderson, and Eric Aguilera.

MINNETONKA, Minn. — Dr. Theodore J. Hanwick, World War II veteran, 95, of Minnetonka, Minn,. died March 2, 2005, and his wife of 64 years, Fern M. Hanwick, also 95, followed in death 19 hours later.

Dr. Hanwick was a retired professor and chairman of the Physics Department at Augsburg College.

They were preceded in death by their parents; and siblings including Evelyn Warden of Golden Valley.

They are survived by their daughter, Linda (John) Putnam; their son, Theodore T. (Jeanette) Hanwick; grandchildren, Eric, Bjorn, Christine, Timothy, Aaron and Nathan; and two great-grandchildren.

SLINGER, Wis. — Betty L. Behr (nee Sampson) of Campbellsport, Wis., formerly of Slinger, Wis., entered eternal peace on Thursday (March 3, 2005) at Hartford Care Center, at the age of 75.

Betty was born Nov. 18, 1929, to Samuel (Bertha Ingadal) Sampson in Elmore and was raised in Mason City, moving to Milwaukee in the late 1940s.

Betty married the late Elmer O. on Sept. 15, 1951, in Milwaukee. The couple lived in Racine until they moved to Slinger in 1963.

She was employed at Chrysler Marine of Hartford for more than 20 years as a factory worker, retiring Aug. 2, 1982.

Betty is survived by her children, Alan of Slinger, Wis., Roxanne (Richard) Heppner of Campbellsport, Wis., and Ronnie of Slinger, Wis.; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Christopher (Jenna), Jeanna (Nick), and Megan; three great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Lenna, Brooklynn; and future great-grandchildren in July of 2005; two sisters, Alma Campbell, of Mason City, Iowa, and Star Field of Memphis, Ind.; and five brothers, Ivan (Elaine) Sampson of Lomira, Wis., Lloyd (Betty) Sampson of Minnesota, Tillman (Virginia) Sampson of Maryland, Norman (Anita) Sampson of Missouri, and Donald (Arlene) Sampson of Mason City.

She will also be deeply missed by her two favorite nieces, other relatives, friends, Ardith Woods and Beverly Walk, whom she grew up with, her cats, "Bob" and "Spot," and her dog, "Little Bits."

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, her husband on Sept. 13, 1998; and two brothers, Peter and Sigwald Sampson.

A private memorial service in honor of Betty was held at the Phillip Funeral Home Chapel of West Bend, Wis. Cremation will take place at Paradise Cremation Services of West Bend, Wis.

Shirley was born April 24, 1944, in Springfield, Ill. the daughter of Hubert Wiley and Martha (Derry) Van Eman. She trusted Christ as a young girl and was active in her church in her younger years.

She graduated from Greenview High School, Greenview, Ill. and from Hannibal-LaGrange Jr. College, Hannibal, Mo.

Shirley married Joe Honeycutt on Oct. 17, 1965, in Petersburg, Ill. She later attended Baptist Bible College and Southwest Missouri State, Springfield, Mo. She worked with the handicapped at SPARC, Springfield, Ill.

They moved to Clear Lake in February of 1999.

Shirley was a devoted wife and was a very caring person. She enjoyed listening to Christian music, especially George Beverly Shea. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Mason City.

She is survived by her husband, Joe Honeycutt, of Clear Lake; son, Shannon Honeycutt, of Minneapolis, Minn.; two grandchildren, Braden and Grace Honeycutt; two brothers, Dale Van Eman and his wife, Ann, Athens, Ill. and Dan Van Eman and his wife, Rosalyn, Sherman, Ill.; a sister, Bonnie Heyen and her husband Larry, Petersburg, Ill.; and daughter-in-law, Shari Honeycutt, of Lino Lakes, Minn.

 She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Shane Honeycutt.

BELMOND — Wallace F. Johnston, 83, of Belmond, passed away Saturday (March 5, 2005) at USA Health Care Center.

Wallace, the son of Harold F. and Marie Shine Johnston, was born May 3, 1921, in Brooklyn, Iowa. He grew up in the Brooklyn area where he attended schools.

Wallace was united in marriage to Ellen Suntken in 1951. The couple made their home in the north central Iowa area, where they raised their family and Wally drove truck. Trucking was the work of his life and it was an occupation he loved. Wally retired trucking from National Bi-Products in Belmond.

Wally enjoyed tinkering on cars and playing "Mr. Fix-It." Wally was a devoted husband to his wife, Ellen.

He was a member of the Teamsters.

Wally is survived by a son, Clarence, of Holmes; a daughter, LaNae Walrod and husband Mike of Latimer; daughter-in-law, Lelani of Belmond; six grandchildren: Misty, John, Tammy, Alex, Matt and Annie; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth Graham of Rialto, Calif. and Ruth Harris of Sequim, Wash.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ellen, in July of 2004; son, Harold, in 2003; and a sister.

Dallas G. Elwood

CORWITH — Funeral services for Dallas G. Elwood, 82, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church at Corwith with the Rev. Dan Fernandez officiating. Interment will be in the Corwith Cemetery with military honors by the Elmer Wilson American Legion Post No. 229.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Corwith.

Dallas G. Elwood was born on Nov. 7, 1922, at Eagle Grove, to George and Margaret Jordan Elwood. He received his education in Eagle Grove.

Dallas served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1945. He served in the European Theater, where he earned the Bronze Star for bravery. After the service he returned to Eagle Grove.

Dallas was united in marriage to Eunice Maxine Tabb on March 31, 1948, at Corwith, Iowa. The couple lived for a time in Eagle Grove and then moved to Corwith in 1956. Dallas and Eunice owned and operated Elwood's Meat Processing and Grocery. The couple retired in 1983.

Dallas was a member of the Corwith United Methodist Church. He also belonged to Elmer Wilson American Legion Post No. 229 at Corwith. Dallas was a member of the Iowa Meat Processing Association, where he had served as director, vice president and president.

He also belonged to the Corwith Merchant's Club.

Dallas's wife, Eunice preceded him in death on March 13, 2003.

Due to failing health, Dallas became a resident of the Kanawha Community Home at Kanawha, Iowa. He died on Tuesday (March 8, 2005) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt. Dallas was 82.

Dallas is survived by his two sons, their spouses and four grandchildren, Scott Elwood and wife, Vicky and their two sons, Mike and Steven, of Jefferson City, Mo., and Tom Elwood and wife, Ladine and their two daughters, Katie and Elizabeth of Liberty, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Eunice; and eight brothers and sisters.

Marjorie was born Dec. 17, 1922, in Webster City, Iowa, the daughter of Marius and Karren Anderson.

She received her education at Stanhope, Iowa, then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Wartburg College in Waverly and graduated with a degree in early childhood education from Drake University, Des Moines.

She taught kindergarten in West Bend, Mason City, Charles City, and second grade in Ames. Marjorie taught school for 35 years. She retired in 1983 from Lincoln Elementary in Charles City.

Marjorie married Thomas E. "Gene" Manning on June 8, 1947 in Stanhope. To this union a daughter, Cynthia, was born. The Mannings moved to Mason City in 1982.

Marjorie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she was active in Trinity Church Women and the Trinity Church Choir for 17 years. She was a member of PEO Chapter IY and past board member of KCMR. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association and lifetime member of the Iowa State Education Association.

Marjorie enjoyed traveling with her family in Mexico, Norway, Europe, Hawaii and the United States. She also enjoyed baking, golfing, biking and helping raise her grandson, Evan.

She is survived by her husband, Gene Manning; daughter, Cynthia Zach and husband James; grandson, Evan Zach, all of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Gladys Lawson.

Verna B. Alke, the daughter of Adolph and Rose (Dallman) Holck, was born Dec. 18, 1917, in Orthel Township, Hancock County.

She graduated from Britt High School, where she received her normal training, in 1935. She then taught at various country schools in the Britt area.

On Feb. 8, 1944, she was married to George Alke at First Lutheran Church in Britt. They farmed south of Titonka until 1983 when they moved into Britt. In May of 2002 they moved to the Summit House in Britt.

Verna was a member of First Lutheran Church in Britt, ELCW and the Britt Senior Citizens.

Verna was an active member of Good Hope Lutheran Church in Titonka before they moved to Britt. She also was a member of the Neighborhood Club in Titonka.

She is survived by her husband, George Alke, of Britt; her daughter, Jan (John) Hana of Garner; a granddaughter, Jennifer (Mike) Dillon of Denver, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Donna married Steve Hejna Aug. 20, 1966, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sioux Falls, S. D. The Hejnas moved to Mason City in 1967. Donna worked as a registered nurse at Americana Nursing Home. She also served as the bookkeeper for the family business, Roto-Rooter, for 28 years. She retired in 1995 when the business was sold.

Donna was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Women of the Moose. She enjoyed her monthly card club, bowling, baking, ceramics and decorating her home at Christmas. Her greatest enjoyment was being able to raise her two children while staying at home and working.

She is survived by two children, Paul Hejna and wife, Kathy, of Mason City, and Sara Bollwhan and husband, Josh, of Denver, Colo.; four grandchildren, Aaron and Jessica Bollwhan, and Emily and Rachel Hejna; brother, Kermit Ohlsen and wife, Ann, of Waconia, Minn.

MASON CITY — Steven Dean Zimmer, 60, of Mason City, died Monday (March 7, 2005) unexpectedly of heart failure at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services for Steven will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Jo Frahm Watkins of First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Manly Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Steven was born on April 5, 1944, to Leo Dean and Verna (Kecker) Zimmer of Northwood. Steve grew up in the towns of Manly and Osage. He joined the United States Navy in 1961, serving honorably during the Vietnam conflict.

Upon his return to Mason City after four years of service, he met and married Barbara Carroll DeKruif and spent the next 40 years of marriage raising their three children and enjoying their seven grandchildren.

Steven has worked for several Mason City companies. For 10 years he worked at Schneider Metal as a time study engineer. He also worked for David Manufacturing for more than 10 years as an assembly manager and for the last 10 years for Graham Manufacturing as a quality control engineer.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Barbara Zimmer of Mason City; his three children, Corey (Rose) Zimmer of Bellevue, Neb., Anthony (Melissa) Zimmer of Great Falls, Mont., and Angela (Steven) Reinhart of Portland, Texas. Steven is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Joshua, Anthony, Kristy, Jonathan, Emily, Harley and Steven; his sisters, Carol (Duane) Cox of Minnesota, Zoe (Tom) Powers of Kensett and Lynn (Ken) Jorgenson of St. Ansgar.

OSAGE — Mabel H. Sawyer, 89, of Osage, went to be with the Lord on Monday (March 7, 2005) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Mabel was born Oct. 31, 1915, in rural Winnebago County to Carl and Inga (Thorson) Olson. She graduated from Commerce High School in Detroit, Mich.

Mabel married Harold R. Sawyer on Nov. 5, 1939, in Osage, Iowa. To this union two children were born. Harold passed away in 1977. Mabel was a longtime member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Osage.

Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Osage with the Rev. Rick Magstadt officiating. Private family burial will take place Friday morning at the Osage Cemetery.

She was united in marriage to Clarence Stuart Riggins on May 11, 1951, at Zion Reformed Church in rural Sheffield. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Zion Reformed Church.

She was a Girl and Cub Scout leader, she enjoyed to go camping when the family was younger and she loved to take photographs. She also had a special interests in her German heritage.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence Stuart Riggins, of Hampton; two sons, Steve Riggins, of Hampton and Wayne Riggins and his wife, Lori, of Hampton; one daughter, Bev and her husband, Kevin Mason, of Aredale; brother, Arnold Oltmann and his wife, Shirley, of Hampton; granddaughters, Angela and Rebecca Riggins of Hampton, Danielle Mason of Fayette and Nicole and Caitlin Mason, of Aredale; great-grandsons, Trevor and Jacob Grefe, of Hampton.

RENWICK — Donald Arthur Palmer, 90, of Renwick, died Monday (March 7, 2005) at Good Shepherd Health Care Center in Mason City after a short illness.

A funeral service will be held 10: 30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, 610 Kelling St. in Renwick, with the Rev. Karen Dearchs officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Renwick with a flag folding ceremony conducted by the Harvey-McPeak Post 289, Renwick.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Renwick with a masonic service beginning at 7 p.m.

Donald was born Oct. 10, 1914, in Renwick, son of Stephen and Augusta (Thompson) Palmer. He graduated from Renwick High School in 1934. After graduation, Donald went to work for the Rural Electrification Agency and helped bring electric power to Wright County.

In September 1939, Donald married Geraldine Williamson of Eagle Grove. During World War II, Donald served in the Navy as an electrician's mate.

After the war, he returned to the family farm where he worked until opening Palmer Chevrolet Garage in 1955. In 1970, Donald returned to the family farm until his retirement in 1996.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine, of Mason City; three children, Stephen Palmer and his wife Jean, of Mason City, Donna Smith and her husband, Brad, of Seattle, Wash., and David Palmer of Dalad, Iraq; one sister, Ferne Severns, of Britt; and his five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John Palmer.

Donald was a kind and loving soul who will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.

MASON CITY — Bernard Z. "Ben" Miller, 87, of the IOOF Home in Mason City since February 2002 and formerly of 111 S. Kentucky Ave., died Tuesday (March 8, 2005) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave. in Mason City with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City. Military respects at the cemetery will be conducted by the Mason City Memorial Association.

GREENE — A funeral Mass for Harold E. Shultz, 67, of 501 S. Kentucky Ave. Mason City, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church  in Greene, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Greene, with military rites conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268, American Legion of Greene.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St. in Greene, where there will be a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services on Saturday at the church.

Harold Edwin Shultz was born Jan. 24, 1938, in Greene, Butler County, the third of five children born to John and Ruth (Newbern) Shultz and died Tuesday (March 8, 2005) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. He graduated from the Greene High School in 1956 and enlisted in the United States Navy on Sept. 6, 1956. He served with Mobile Construction Battalion Seven. He was honorably discharged Aug. 4, 1960.

Harold was united in marriage to Annette Burgess at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, on July 21, 1963. To this union two children were born, Kent Joel and Craig Steven. Like his father and brother, Jack, Harold worked at the Oliver Tractor Co. in Charles City until his accident in 1969. From that time on, Harold resided in nursing homes in Knoxville and Mason City, where he remained until the time of his death.

Although he was unable to live with his family at home, he taught us many lessons about courage and life and throughout never lost his sense of humor. Harold's greatest achievement in life was his loving presence in our lives as a friend, husband, father, and grandpa. He enjoyed hunting deer and pheasants and spending time with his family.

Harold is survived by his loving wife Annette, Mason City; his sons and their families Kent (Sarah) Shultz, and their children Kaitlyn, Nolan, Mollie and Isaac, of Osage; and Craig (Kelly) Shultz, and their children Isabel, Amelia and Truman of Chicago, Ill.; two sisters: Barb Tarr of Phoenix, Shari (Donald) Holtzee of Peoria, Ariz.; one brother, Robert, of Phoenix, Ariz. Harold is also survived by a sister-in-law, Marilyn (Shultz) Schipp, of Waverly; nephews, Gene (Patty) Shultz of Cedar Falls, Dan (Dixie) Shultz of Ramsey, Minn., Jon (Diana) Holtzee of Chicago; nieces, Paulette Shultz of Phoenix, and Jennifer (Dan) Draffkorn of Wadsworth, Ill.; and many great-nieces and nephews. Harold is also survived by one aunt, Muriel (Newbern) Whitten of Staunton, Va.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Jack Duane Shultz; and nephew, Robb Tarr.

MASON CITY — Marjorie L. Manning, 82, of 33 N. Willowgreen Court, died Monday (March 7, 2005) at the Muse Norris Hospice In-patient Unit.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. James Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. The casket will be closed.

Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Marjorie was born Dec. 17, 1922, in Webster City, Iowa, the daughter of Marius and Karren Anderson.

She received her education at Stanhope, Iowa, then at-tended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Wartburg College in Waverly and graduated in early childhood education from Drake University, Des Moines.

She taught kindergarten in West Bend, Mason City, Charles City and second grade in Ames. Marjorie taught school for 35 years. She retired in 1983 from Lincoln Elementary in Charles City.

Marjorie married Thomas E. "Gene" Manning on June 8, 1947, in Stanhope. To this union a daughter, Cynthia, was born. The Mannings moved to Mason City in 1982.

Marjorie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was active in Trinity Church Women and Trinity Church Choir for 17 years. She was a member of PEO Chapter IY and past board member of KCMR. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association and lifetime member of ISEA.

Marjorie enjoyed traveling with her family in Mexico, Norway, Europe, Hawaii and the United States. She also enjoyed baking, golfing, biking and helping raise her grandson, Evan.

She is survived by her husband, Gene Manning; daughter, Cynthia Zach and husband, James; grandson, Evan Zach all of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Gladys Lawson.

CHARLES CITY — Verda Cowan, 89, of Charles City, died Tuesday (March 8, 2005) at Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Verda Cowan will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, pastor of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Verda Irene Hennick Cowan was born Sept. 29, 1915, at Floyd, the daughter of Ora and Harriet (Huffman) Hennick. She attended school at Floyd.

On July 6, 1932, she was united in marriage to Melvin Tibbitts at Charles City. Melvin died on Jan. 11, 1969. Verda married Samuel Cowan in November 1973 at the Little Brown Church. Samuel died on Jan. 18, 1994.

Before her retirement, she was employed at the Spic 'n Span Bakery, Meusel Hardware and Fareway.

Verda's interests included traveling, dancing, gambling and attending Charles City Comet sporting events and the local men's softball games.

Living family members include two children, Roger (Dee) Tibbitts of Charles City and Linda (Tom) Maulsby of Clear Lake; 17 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and three stepchildren, Jerry (Liz) Cowan and Jan Cowan, both of Kentucky, and John Cowan of Alaska.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; four children, Merle Tibbitts, Bonnie Randall, Patricia Sickman and Merlyn Tibbitts; two grandchildren, Dennis Tibbitts and Diane Christie; a brother, Willard Hennick; and three sisters, Ethel Vance, Bessie Stewart and Leda Weiler.
