George Elwyn Gaskill

CORWITH — George Elwyn Gaskill, 92, prominent Corwith-area farmer and long-time pioneer supporter of rural electrification in Iowa, died Monday (Feb. 28, 2005) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

A celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Corwith United Methodist Church with Pastor Dan Fernandez officiating. Interment will be at the Corwith Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Corwith, with Masonic services at 7 p.m. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

George was born May 24, 1912, at the family farm south of Corwith, the son of Elwyn Guy and Winnifred (Bravinder) Gaskill. He was a graduate of Corwith High School and attended Iowa State College before returning home to help his father save the family farm during the Depression years.

On June 29, 1933, George was united in marriage with Mildred Chapman, a Renwick school teacher who grew up in Prescott, Iowa. The wedding took place in Mayville, Mo. To this union two children were born.

George had broad interests, but farming and family were the primary focus of his life. He acquired a strong interest in rural electrification from his father, who was instrumental in bringing electricity to the rural community, including the Gaskill farm.

In 1947, George was appointed to fill his father's position on the Hancock County REC board, a post that he held for many years. He also served on the Cornbelt Regional REC board and later was elected state president of the Iowa Association of Electric Co-ops.

His interests in the community included strong support for the local schools, the Corwith United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, the co-op elevator and the small businesses in town.

He was one of the founders of the Corwith State Bank, where he served on the board of directors for many years.

George was a 92-year member of the Corwith United Methodist Church where he served in many capacities. He was also a 33rd Degree Mason in the Masonic Lodge and a member of the Shriners.

In retirement, the "Corwith morning coffee club" was an important part of his daily routine. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and travel.

He and Mildred cherished their five grandchildren and provided strong advice and guidance at frequent family gatherings.

George was an avid supporter of the Corwith community all his life. When he moved to the Summit House Apartments in Britt two and one-half years ago, he refused to change his Corwith address, saying "I was born in Corwith, I have lived there all my life, and I'll die a resident of Corwith."

George is survived by his two children: a son, E. Thurman and wife, Geraldine, of Corwith; daughter, Georgia Crockett and husband, Paul, of Minneapolis; five grandchildren: Beth Anne Gaskill Douglass (David), of Bellevue, Wash.; Mark Gaskill (Sandra), of Chesterfield, Mo.; Major David Gaskill (Rebecca), of LaVista, Neb.; Andrea Crockett Sticha (Timothy), of Plymouth, Minn.; and Allison Crockett Schmidt (Mark), of Simsbury, Conn.; 10 great-grandchildren: Zachary and Benjamin Douglass, Peyton and Jonah Gaskill (Chesterfield, Mo.), Mikaela and Preston Gaskill, Matthew and Sean Sticha, and Katherine and William Schmidt. Other survivors include a sister-in-law, Mrs. William (Beatrice) Gaskill of Stuart; a nephew, Gilbert Gaskill of Des Moines; a niece, Winnifred Gaskill of Stuart; and many cousins.

Preceding George in death were his parents and his wife, Mildred; one brother, William; one sister, Marjorie Gaskill Stanton and her husband, Wallace, and their daughter, Judith Stanton Bailey; and an infant grandson, James Scott Gaskill.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or the Corwith United Methodist Church.

Dennis Francis Harold

ROCKFORD, Ill. — Dennis Francis Harold, 73, of Rockford, Ill. died Sunday (Feb. 27, 2005) at St. Anthony's Medical Center from complications of diabetes.

"Denny" was born Nov. 20, 1931, in Mason City, Iowa, to Patrick and Ellen (McMenamin) Harold. He lived in Rockford, Ill., on and off over 23 years, including his 1976-1985 stint and president and general manager of Smith Oil Company, a subsidiary of Sunoco.

A 1953 graduate of the University of Iowa's business school, Denny served two years in the U.S. Army.

He used his budding business acumen (and sense of humor) as a company clerk to ship himself to Europe for the final months of his tour of duty.

Upon discharge, he returned to Iowa and began a 34-year career in the petroleum industry, first with Standard Oil and then with Sunray DX Oil Co., later acquired by Sunoco.

The youngest of five children born to an Irish immigrant couple, Denny grew up with a strong sense of his ethnic heritage, a drive to better his position in life, and an ability to enjoy the amusing foibles of people, including his own.

He was fortunate to meet his wife, Patricia, a woman who looked even more Irish than he did (although she amused him by confusing a Scottish fling with an Irish jig).

They were married on June 29, 1957, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Rockford. The couple embarked on a corporate nomadic existence through various Midwestern locales, including Minneapolis, Kansas City and Detroit, as he moved up the management executive hierarchy. They retired to Rockford, Ill., in 1989 to enjoy a new life based on family roots, good friends and Denny's devotion to an annual winter trek to Florida.

His wife and children remember with love one of God's most stubborn creatures, who also was quick witted, well-read, generous and tender-hearted.

Denny surmounted at least three major challenges in his life: First, through intelligence and hard work, he secured a firm position for himself and his family in the white-collar world.

Second, relying on inner grit, he stepped away from a quiet drinking problem of 12 years and openly discussed the hurts it has caused.

Third, when ill health robbed him of most of his abilities in his last days, he endured the indignities with grace, patience and frequent smiles.

Denny leaves his loving wife of 47 years, Pat (Keenan) Harold, a Rockford, Ill., native; his daughter, Rosemary Harold, and her husband, Michael Knipe, of Washington, D.C.; his son, Christopher Harold, and his wife, Pamela Harold, of Rockford, Ill., and Denny's three grandchildren, Erin Appell, Shannon Harold and Kevin Harold, all of Rockford, Ill. He also is survived by his brother, Donald "Pete" Harold; his sister, Eileen (Harold) Berg and her husband, Philip Berg; two nieces, Lisa Berg and Nancy (Berg) Johnson; and his grandnieces, Wynne and Katie Johnson.

Denny was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Catherine and Mary.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Rockford, Ill., with Father William Wentink officiating. Interment will take place in the Keenan family plot at Calvary Cemetery following the funeral Mass.

Friends also are welcome to pay their respects and visit family members from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 1860 S. Mulford Road, Rockford, Ill.

Donations in memory of Denny may be made to OSF St. Anthony Medical Center Foundation, which supports a hospital dear to the family.

Carl Joseph Mealy was born in Elma, Iowa, on June 10, 1925, the son of Robert Aldon and Terrance Marie (Cannon) Mealy. Carl's early years were spent in Elma. His family moved to Mason City where he graduated from Holy Family High School in 1943. From 1943 to 1945, Carl served in U.S. Army in active duty with the infantry in Italy then as a clerk at the prisoner of war camp in Greeley, Colo. During his service to his country, he was awarded several medals, including the Bronze Star.

Following service, he attended the University of Northern Iowa. In 1949, he graduated with a BA in business and physical education. Carl was a teacher and a coach in Lehigh, Iowa, from 1949 to 1950.

On June 5, 1950, Carl married Alice Norton at St Mary's Catholic Church in Wilton, Iowa.

The couple found teaching jobs together in Elwood, Iowa, where Carl was a principal, teacher and a coach until 1953. During the summers, Carl attended Colorado State College of Education in Greeley, Colo., graduating with a MA in education administration in 1953.

Carl took a position in Nichols, Iowa, as the Superintendent of Schools from 1953 to 1958. In 1958, he became the principal of the high school at Horicon, Wis. The family moved to Mason City, Iowa, in 1967 where Carl served as an administrator in the Mason City Schools until his retirement in 1985. Carl served as principal at Harding, Garfield, Washington and Roosevelt elementary schools.

While in Nichols, Carl joined the Army Reserve service, ending his 30-year military career attached to a civil affairs unit in Green Bay, Wis. In addition, from 1972 to 1978 he was selected to serve as a liaison officer for West Point. Carl retired from the Army as lieutenant colonel.

In 1973, Carl and Alice opened up C&A Hobby Shop in Mason City. It drew customers from hundreds of miles around. Carl kept the store open at the same location on Fourth Avenue for 30 years until Carl's health forced its closure in 2003. The hobby shop was a labor of love for Carl. He had a passion for airplanes, model building and flying. Just as in education, Carl took immense satisfaction in helping others, especially kids, and watching them grow.

Carl is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Alice (Norton) Mealy; their five children and 12 grandchildren; two sons: Carl and wife, Cynthia, of Normandy Park, Wash., and Robert Mealy of Madison, Wis.; three daughters: Cindy Mealy and husband, Bob, Steinberg of Verona, Wis., Cathy Shea and husband, Kevin, of Cedar Rapids and Alice Ann Janechek and husband, Lon, of Independence, Iowa; and grandchildren Katie, Nicholas, Mathew, Amanda, Benjamin, Megan, Teresa, Lisa, Timothy, Michael, Brian and Tedrick. Throughout his life, Carl enjoyed meeting and working with people. He participated in and supported youth and civic organizations. He challenged himself to make things better.
