Elsie Nuehring


OSAGE — Elsie Nuehring, age 76, of Osage, died Monday, (March 14, 2005), at Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice Unit in Osage. Elsie was born July 29, 1928, in Belmond, Iowa, the daughter of Tim and Meta (Fastenau) Gerdes. She was baptized Nov. 4, 1928, at Emmanuel Reformed Church in Belmond. Elsie graduated from Klemme High School in 1945.

She was united in marriage to Dean Nuehring at Emmanuel Reformed Church in Klemme on Feb. 24, 1948. Prior to her marriage, Elsie had been employed at a grocery store in Goodell. She was an active member of Eden Presbyterian Church.

Elsie was an avid sports fan, loved to sew and quilt, played cards, helped with gardening and enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables. Elsie was well known for the pies that she loved to bake.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Eden Presbyterian Church, rural Rudd, with the Rev. John Bates officiating. Burial will be in Eden Presbyterian Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and will continue one hour before services on Thursday at the church.

Elsie is survived by her husband, Dean Nuehring of Osage; daughters, Avon (Jerry) Rurup of Titonka and children Jodi and Jeremy, Donna (Marloe) Ellingson of Joice and children Karen (Brian) Ahrens and twins Emily and Tyler, Jennifer (Randy) Hall and daughter Kimberly and Dean Ellingson, Nancy (Neal) Hirota of Osage and children Nicole, Natalie, Nicholas and Nolan, Janet (Gerard) May of Osage and sons Jonathan and Jeffrey, Ronda Olson of Rose Creek, Minn., and children Katherine and Derek, Brenda (Randy) Ricke of Garner and children Amber, Stephanie and Alexander; daughter-in-law, Sharon Mihm of Mason City and children Timothy (Sarah) Nuehring, Holly (Paul) Manny and Michael Nuehring; brother, Henry (Dorothy) Gerdes of Belmond; sisters-in-law, Norma Gerdes of Belmond and Rosie Gerdes of Klemme.

Elsie is preceded by her parents; a son, Dennis Dean Nuehring; and two brothers, George and Elmer Gerdes.

Jeffrey Lee Cater


MYAKKA CITY, Fla. — Jeffrey Lee Cater, 56, of Myakka City, Fla., died March 7, 2005.

He was born May 6, 1948, in Dixon, Ill., and came to Myakka City in 1985 from Mason City, Iowa. He was a physician assistant previously in practice with Surgical Associates of North Iowa. He was a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Sarasota Racing Pigeon Club.

He received his bachelor's degree in microbiology from Southern Illinois University and bachelor's in medicine (PA) from the University of Iowa. He served in the Navy in Vietnam.

Survivors include his wife, Yvonne Marie; a daughter, Shawn M. Witherington of High Springs, Fla.; a son, Jeffrey M. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; sisters, Joan Beerwart of Port Charlotte, Fla., Rebecca Morrow and Julia Croy, both of Englewood, Fla., and Janet Baird of Rotona, Fla.; brothers, John of Antioch, Tenn., Robert of Clearwater, Fla.. and Richard of Dixon, Ill.; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 13, 2005, at the Cater residence, 5160 Verna Bethany Road, Myakka City, Fla.

Arlene A. (Miller) Goehring


MASON CITY — Arlene A. (Miller) Goehring, 84, of Mason City, died Monday (March 14, 2005) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Jo Frahm - Watkins of First United Methodist Church officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time on Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday in the LuVerne Cemetery in LuVerne.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Arlene was born on Jan. 16, 1921, the daughter of Arthur and Thelma (Thompson) Miller in Renwick, Iowa. She attended school in LuVerne and graduated from LuVerne High School.

Arlene attended NIACC and graduated from the nurses training program. She worked for many years at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa and retired in 1985.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Jan Wilkinson and husband, Tom, of Dows and Susan Goehring of Phoenix, Ariz.; granddaughters, Shawna Pedelty and her children Brandon, Samantha and Breanna, all of Mason City, Stacie Till and husband, Greg, and their children Alyssa, Emily and Kayla, all of Mason City, and Jeri Ann Foreman and husband, Scott, and their children, Ashley, Nate White, Lillian and Chase, all of Hampton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons: Craig and Dennis; a sister, Donna O'Nan; and one brother, Richard Miller.

Mier ‘Mickey' Kaufman


EDINA, Minn. — Mier "Mickey" Kaufman, 94, of Edina. Born in Minneapolis, Minn., raised in Mason City, Iowa, he served in the military during World War II, obtaining the rank of captain. Returning to Mason City after his service in Europe, he owned a Coast-to-Coast store and in 1967, moved to Edina.

He enjoyed bowling, golf, tennis, travel, movies, was an avid reader and loved to discuss current events and politics.

He was preceded in death by mother, Lena, and father, Sam; wives, Maxyne and Doris; brothers, Louis and David; sisters, Anne and Dorothy; nephews, Ralph and Jerry.

He is survived by nieces, Constance, Louise, Nancy, Susan, Sarah, Joan and Lorrie; nephews, Lynn and Larry and many friends.

Graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Shelley L. Frenzen


OWATONNA, Minn. — Shelley L. Frenzen, 38, of Owatonna, Minn., died Sunday (March 13, 2005) at Owatonna Hospital.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church, 302 E. Fourth St. in Hanlontown, with the Rev. Kris Snyder officiating. Interment will be in Brush Point Cemetery, Hanlontown.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St. in Manly, and then one hour before the service on Friday at the church.

Shelley Lynne (Kraft) Frenzen was born April 23, 1966, in Rochester, Minn., the daughter of Ronald Kraft and Linda (Kingland) Fulton. She graduated from Rochester Mayo High School in 1984.

She married Phillip Frenzen on June 29, 1985, and they were later divorced. Shelley worked at Elm Homes in Waseca, Minn., as an adult care supervisor.

Shelley enjoyed reading books, poetry, art, singing, and spending time with her family. She enjoyed being around people and talking with everyone she met. Shelley was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

Shelley will be sadly missed by her two children, Brandon Frenzen, Stewartville, Minn., and Callie Maxwell, Owatonna, Minn. She is also survived by her parents, Ronald Kraft, Houston, Minn., and Linda (David) Fulton, Hanlontown; a sister, Shawn Kraft, Milwaukee, Wis.; a brother, Shane Fulton, Rochester, Minn.; grandparents, Helen Balfe, Nevis, Minn., Daphine Jorstad, Adams, Minn., and Roger Kingland, Mason City; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and special family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her grandfather, Lester Jorstad, and an uncle, Lynn Kingland.

Constance J. Nickolou

MASON CITY —      Constance J. Nickolou, 86, of 2047 Hunter's Ridge, fell into the arms of our Lord shortly after 8 a.m. on the morning of March 16, 2005, at a local nursing home. She was surrounded by her immediate family at the time of her death.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 1311 Second St. S.W. in Mason City, with the Rev. Joseph Mirowski, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., where a Trisagion prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Memorials may be given  to the Constance J. Nickolou Memorial Fund.

Miss Nickolou was born in Mason City on Oct. 2, 1918, just before the end of the First World War. She was the eldest daughter in the family of four children born to James and Zaharo Nickolao, who immigrated to the United States during the first years of the 20th century.

Connie attended Mason City schools, graduating in 1936. After a short period of employment in Mason City, she went to Washington, D.C., in 1942. She worked for the U.S. Maritime Commission for a few years, prior to be-coming a career employee of the Central Intelligence Agency in 1948.

During her CIA career, Miss Nickolou had tours of duty overseas, beginning in 1949 in Athens, Greece. She later spent two years in Nicosia, Cyprus. She was reassigned to Greece for a number of years before spending two years of duty in Saigon, South Vietnam, beginning in 1970. She retired from the Central Intelligence Agency in 1977 after 29 years of service. Constance worked another 10 years for Computer Sciences in Arlington, Va.

In December 1999, she and her two sisters returned to Mason City and took up residence in the Hunter's Ridge condominiums.

Miss Nickolou was preceded in death by her parents, James and Zaharo Nickolao; her oldest sister, Panyiota Chimbidis; her nephew, Michael Chimbidis, who was killed in Europe during World War II; her older brother, Samuel J. Nickolas of Washington, D.C.; and recently by her second nephew, Leonidas Chimbidis of Mason City who died Oct. 11, 2004.

She is survived by her two sisters: Mrs. Victoria Nickles and Francis Nickolou, both Mason City; as well as her third nephew, James Chimbidis, of Aurora, Ill.

Arlene H. Grove


SWALEDALE — Arlene H. Grove, 87, died Tuesday (March 15, 2005) at the Manly Care Center in Manly.

Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Swaledale United Methodist Church in Main St., Swaledale, with the Rev. Bruce Wittern officiating. Burial will be in the New Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Arlene H. Grove Memorial Fund.

Arlene H. Grove was born March 21,1917, in Bremer County near Frederika, the daughter of Francis and Lydia (Harker) Costello.

Arlene attended Bremer and Chickasaw county schools. She graduated from Nashua High School in 1935, then taught country school for four years.

Arlene was united in marriage to Charles W. Grove on May 21, 1939, in the Little Brown Church, Nashua; to this union three children were born. Charles and Arlene lived in Mason City until they moved in 1952 to his family farm near New Hampton. They farmed until 1964, when they purchased the Grove Grocery Store in Swaledale. Upon Charles's unexpected death, Arlene took over operating the grocery store; she retired in 1982.

Arlene enjoyed reading, gardening, cooking and music. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family and friends. Arlene was a member of Swaledale United Methodist Church, Ruth Circle, Swaledale Library Board, and the Swaledale Garden Club.

She is survived by her children, Gaye (Cliff) Pedersen, of Cresco, Joye (Duane) Petersen, of Clear Lake, Charles D. (Kathy) Grove, of Clear Lake; five grandchildren: Julie (Kevin) Carter, Lisa (Daryl) Soblik of Cresco, Dustin (Nicole) Petersen, of Ankeny, Kerri (Eric) Gustin, of Meservey, and Casey Grove of Clear Lake; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, John (Maxine) Costello, of New Hampton; one sister, Bessie Buckel, of Sumner; along with other family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles on Feb. 22, 1965; sisters, Yetta Edson and Leone Young; brothers, Lowell and Derwood Costello

Phyllis M. Wenman


GENESEO, Ill. — Phyllis M. Wenman, 53, of Geneseo, died Monday (March 14, 2005) at her home after a courageous 6-year battle with ovarian cancer.

A Mass of Christian burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 16, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Iowa City, with the Rev. Walter Helms officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Coralville.

Visitation was held on Tuesday at the Vandemore Funeral Home LTD, Geneseo, Ill.

Memorials may be left to St. Mary of Vernon Hills Catholic Church, Vernon Hills High School or St. Malachy's Catholic Church, Geneseo.

Phyllis was born Aug. 5, 1951, in Pontiac, Ill., the daughter of LeRoy and Belva (Parsons) Schulz. She was a graduate of Corwith High School and the University of Iowa, receiving a BBA in accounting. She was a controller for Lake Forest Academy in Lake Forest, Ill. from September 1997 until May 2002. She was formerly a member of St. Mary of Vernon Hills Catholic Church, Lake Forest, Ill.; the Hawthorne School District School Board, Vernon Hills, Ill.; and currently a member of St. Malachy's Catholic Church, Geneseo.

She enjoyed quilting and her sons' sporting events.

Survivors include two sons: Matthew Wenman, student at University of Colorado, and Andrew Wenman, student of University of Illinois; daughter and spouse, Danielle and Matt Kalinsky, Dunlap, Ill.; her father, LeRoy Schulz, of Iowa; five brothers: Donald Schulz, of West Bend, Arthur Schulz, of Forest City, Richard Schulz, of East Grand Forks, Minn., Thomas Schulz, of Council Bluffs, and     Eric Schulz, of Whittemore; two sisters: Beth Ann Alexander, of Patterson, Calif., and Tammy Isaccson, of Manly.

She was preceded in death by her mother and a brother, Howard.

Gloria Dorenkamp


MASON CITY — Gloria Dorenkamp, 63, of 21185 Vine Ave., died Tuesday (March 15, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Old Stone Methodist Church in Rock Falls with the Rev. Wendy Johannesen officiating.

Gathering of family and friends will be held one hour prior to the services on Friday at the church. Inurnment will take place at a later date.

Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association.

Gloria was born Feb. 28, 1942, in Mason City, the daughter of R.E. and Alice (Guthrie) Luse. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1960.

Gloria married Larry Dorenkamp on Jan. 18, 1980, in Mason City. The Dorenkamps moved to an acreage outside of Mason City in 1980, where they enjoyed fixing and making improvements to their acreage.

Gloria worked for Holcim Cement Plant as a stock room supervisor for 28 years until retirement.

She enjoyed collecting owls, camping, fishing, gambling and spending time with family.

She is survived by husband, Larry, of Mason City; children, Toni and husband, Mark Rock, of St. James, Minn., Dean and Liz Trebilcock of Denver, Colo.; Steve Dorenkamp of Lake Mills, Matt and wife, Teresa Dorenkamp, of Mason City, Larry Michael Dorenkamp and wife, Malena, of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Jeff, Josh, John, Ian, Michael and very special granddaughter, Heather; great-grandchild, Jaris; parents, R.E. and Alice Luse, of Mason City; brothers, Bill Luse of St. Ansgar, and John and Carole Luse of Osage; nieces and nephews, Raymie and wife, Christina Luse, and family, Tara and husband, Chris, and family, and Erin and Brad Feingold.

She was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents.

Scott A. Fingalsen


BAINBRIDGE, Ga. — Scott A. Fingalsen, 45, of 10610 Pine Hill Road, Bainbridge, Ga., died Tuesday (March 15, 2005) at Memorial Hospital in Bainbridge.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Christian Church, 102 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Glen Bandel officiating. Burial will be at Rock Grove Cemetery, Nora Springs.

A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs.

Scott Allan Fingalsen was born March 31, 1959, in Mason City. Scott is the son of Allan and Elizabeth (Young) Fingalsen. Scott graduated from Nora Springs High School in 1977.

After high school, Scott enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves. Scott lived in Oklahoma City and Pryor, Okla. While he was in Oklahoma, he was a truck driver and a painter. Scott then moved to Bainbridge, Ga., and was a self-employed painter.

Scott was baptized and a member of the Christian Church in Nora Springs. He enjoyed golfing and was a NASCAR fan.

Scott is going to be sadly missed by his son, Seth Fingalsen, Adrian, Mo.; a special friend, Donna Massey, Bainbridge, Ga.; parents, Allan and Elizabeth "Bette" Fingalsen, of Nora Springs; one sister, Dianne Christiansen and her husband, Jay, Nora Springs; two nieces: Kylee and Bailey Christiansen, of Nora Springs; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Scott was preceded in death by his grandparents, Wilmer and Anna Fingalsen, and William and Teresa Young; and two cousins: Guy Gordon and Larry Timm.

Mary L. Merrick


CLINTON — Mary L. Merrick, 75, died Monday (March 14, 2005) at Bickford Cottage.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lemke Funeral Home North Chapel, 2304 N. Second St. in Clinton, with the Rev. Roland Schneider officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mary was born March 19, 1929, in Rockford, Iowa, to Harry E. and Grace E. (Malloy) Kreider.

She married Charles E. Siefken on Sept. 9, 1946, in Rockford. He preceded her in death in February 1963.

She then married Merlin Merrick on Dec. 23, 1966, in Rockford. He preceded her in death on Aug. 19, 2002. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Merrick is survived by her children, Robin Buikema, of Clinton, Kenneth (Jane) Siefken, of Littleton, Colo., Connie (Harlan) Krieder, of Plover, Wis.; two stepchildren: Roger Merrick and Karen Thal, of California; six grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, and a brother.

CLEAR LAKE — Evelyn F. Stites, 85, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday (March 15, 2005) at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

A funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with Lay Assistant Richard Scott officiating. Interment will be held at Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Memorials may be given to the Evelyn F. Stites Memorial Fund.

Evelyn was born Feb. 8, 1920, in rural Klemme, the daughter of Lee and Mollie (Heginger) Price. She attended school in Klemme and Clear Lake. Evelyn married Kenneth Stites on March 7, 1938, in Davenport and then moved to Clear Lake.

Evelyn loved flower gardening, spending time at the summer cabin in Richville, Minn., and shopping. She was a lifetime and active member of the VFW Post Auxiliary in Clear Lake.

Evelyn is survived by two daughters, Karen Smith and her husband, Ron, of Belmond, and Jodie Huff and her husband, Mike, of Algona; brother, Bud Price, of Mason City; sister, Leona Torkelson, of Mason City; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, K.C. Stites; her parents; daughter, Lois Draeger; and brother, Bill Price.

‘Honey' Slattum


MASON CITY — Mary G. "Honey" Slattum, 72, of 3205 19th St. S.W., passed away Tuesday (March 15, 2005) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church,  2502 S. Jefferson Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Joel Dahlen officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Honey was born Aug. 31, 1932, at Mason City, a daughter of Cecil Simms and Mary (Rush) Dovali. She attended Mason City schools.

Honey's life was centered on her family. She loved making crafts, working with ceramics and floral arranging. She especially enjoyed her pets.

She was a member of Women of the Moose in Mason City. She will be sadly missed by all the lives she touched.

Sara Jean Youngerman was born Oct. 23, 1952, at Charles City, the daughter of Wilhelm and Helen (Leymaster) Youngerman. She graduated from the Charles City High School and from Iowa State University in 1975 with a degree in family environment.

Sara worked at the veteran's home in Marshalltown, was field director for the North Iowa Girl Scout Council, was proprietor of the Country Mouse Ceramics, assistant teacher at Head Start, and after multiple sclerosis made it impossible to work full time, she worked part time at the Charles City Library and Kmart.

Sara was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school until her health made it impossible for her to continue.

Her interests included doing handwork and teaching ceramic classes. Sara had a great interest in music. She played the cello and bass in high school and was active in both the orchestra and jazz band. A happy moment of her music career was being selected for All State.

Living family members include her mother, Helen Youngerman of Charles City; two sisters: Judith Brooks of Ames and Susan (James) Marth of Rockford; a brother, David (Karen) Youngerman of Charles City; eight nieces and nephews: Kara Harder, Alys Miller, Steven Brooks, Alvin Marth, Billy Marth, Kathy Marth, Anne Youngerman and Jennifer Youngerman.

She was preceded in death by her father; and a brother, William Youngerman.

MANLY — Geraldine W. Hyde, 90, of the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, died Thursday (March 17, 2005) at the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Rock Falls United Methodist Church, Rock Falls, with the Rev. Jim Turner officiating. Interment will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery.

Geraldine was born April 30, 1914 in Rock Falls, the daughter of William and Ethel (Schnartz) Edgar. She graduated from Rock Falls High School in 1931 and Iowa Teachers College in 1933. Geraldine married Forrest C. Hyde on Nov. 30, 1934, in Marshalltown. She would further her education, graduating from Mason City Junior College in 1957, then receiving a B.A. degree from Drake University in 1968.

Geraldine taught school in Rock Falls for 24 years. She moved to Manly in November 2001. She was a life member of Rock Falls United Methodist Church where she was church organist for 30 years. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association, NEA-ISEA and the Rock Falls Cemetery Association.

Geraldine is survived by two sons: Robert Hyde and wife, Marilyn, of Rock Falls, and James Hyde and wife, Sandra, of Northwood; one daughter, Barbara Eppens and husband, Duane, of Mason City; seven grandchildren: Brenda Wernet, Angee Marshall, Randee Hyde, Amy Roen, Tammy Borchardt, Mark Eppens and Chris Eppens; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Roland Eppens, of Manly; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Hyde, of Independence; several nieces and nephews.

Geraldine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Forrest; sister, Levetta Nicholas; brothers, David and Russell Edgar.

Marny was born March 19, 1912, in Washta, Iowa, the only child of Henry and Bertha (Conley) Hatch. She graduated from Washta High School in 1930 and attended Sioux City Commercial College before moving to Clear Lake in 1932.

Marnis married Vincent N. Minette on Nov. 4, 1936, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake. They lived in Clear Lake and Fort Dodge before and during the early years of World War II. During Vincent's service in the Navy, she and son, Michael, lived in Clear Lake. After the war they moved to Omaha, Neb., before returning to Clear Lake in 1948.

She worked with her husband at Witke's Restaurant, helped start and run Witke's Gifts in the early 1950s until their retirement in 1971.

She and her husband enjoyed traveling and entertaining until his death in 1984. She was active in the local TTT chapter and volunteered at Mercy Hospital in Mason City. She was an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

She is survived by two sons: Michael D. Minette of Clear Lake and Richard P. Minette and his wife, Kathleen, of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren: John Minette of The Colony, Texas, Mary Minette of Portland, Ore., Vincent (Ted) Minette and his wife, Kelly, of Liberty, Mo., Jennifer Fore and her husband, Chris, of Concord, N.H., Aimee Kern and her husband, Andy, of Clear Lake and Michael J. Minette of Chicago, Ill.; also surviving are eight great-grandchildren: Carson Kern, Spencer Fore, Madeline Fore, Rosemary Fore, Samuel Minette, Sarah Minette, Maxwell Minette and Katherine Minette.

James "Jim" Marvin Montag was born Jan. 7, 1918, in West Bend. He is the son of Joseph and Francis (Fogarty) Montag. James graduated from West Bend High School. After high school, James enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served during World War II.

On Feb. 7, 1948, James was united in marriage to Dorothy Reiman at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Milford. They farmed in the West Bend and Nora Springs areas.

James was a longtime member of Holy Name Parish in Rockford. He also served on the board of directors for the Rudd Co-op, was a 4-H leader and a member of the Cedar Valley Engine Club. James enjoyed farming, woodworking, reading, collecting and traveling.

James is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy, Nora Springs; seven children: Steve (Leona) Montag, Nora Springs, Doris Montag, Iowa City, Celine (Gary) Horn, Minneapolis, Minn., Gwen (Keith Less) Montag, Coralville, Galen (Laura) Montag, Nora Springs, Greta (Brian) Ivanovic, Fort Wayne, Ind., and Leon (Pam) Montag, Finley, N.D. Also left to cherish his memory are his fifteen grandchildren: Calista (George) Hospodarsky, Lynn Montag, Michael and Matthew Haywood, Rachel and Michelle Horn, Mark and Eric Less, Shawn and Kristen Montag, Nicole and Jason Ivanovic, and Amber, Clay, and Lucas Montag; two brothers: Richard (Patty) Montag of Colorado, and Jerry (Alberta) Montag, Rockford; and one sister, Anna Zita (Rex) Brown, West Bend.

Gary Lee Hollatz, the son of LeRoy and Agnes (Pueggel) Hollatz, was born Jan. 27, 1943, on the family farm north of Garner. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church, east of Garner. He attended St. John's Parochial School and graduated from Garner-Hayfield High School in 1961. Following high school, Gary attended Dunwoody Trade School in Omaha, Neb., and then worked for seven years as a mechanic at Kenworth in Omaha. In 1970, he returned to Garner and became the third generation to farm the family farm.

On April 7, 1973, he married Sharon Doorenbos at St. John's Lutheran Church. He continued to farm until 1996.

Gary served on the board of the Farmer's Co-op Society in Garner for nine years, six years as president. He also was a crop insurance agent for Gatchel Insurance in Garner. In 1998, Gary and Sharon moved into Garner. Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, visiting with family and friends and supporting the Lord's work.

Gary's faith in the Lord gave his life meaning and purpose. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner where he was active as chairman of the congregation, deacon and was on the evangelism team and the assimilation team. He was a past member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he served as a trustee.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon of Garner; three children: Jonathan Hollatz of Garner, Brian Hollatz of Porto Alegre, Brazil, and Emily (Adam) Boge of Huxley; a brother, Stephen (Sophia) Hollatz of Naperville, Ill.; a niece and nephew, Allison and Timothy Hollatz; a step-brother, Vern (Pat) Severson of Clear Lake; a step-sister, Sandra (Roger) Aceto of Des Moines; three aunts: Dorothy Hollatz of Garner, Ann Radloff of Garner and Laura Boehnke of Clear Lake; and an uncle, Arnold (Marlys) Pueggel of Clear Lake.

HANLONTOWN — Richard Hanner, a long-time resident of Hanlontown, passed away Tuesday (March 15, 2005) at his home at the age of 89 years.

Richard was born March 27, 1915, in David City, Butler County, Neb.

The original Hanner families came from Mutterstadt, Germany, to America on a sailing vessel in 1840. Some of the family moved from Ohio to Illinois and then to Nebraska.

The original name was Hörner, which changed several times and finally became Hanner.

Richard's parents were Renwix Lee and Winifred Elsie Hanner and there were five children born, four daughters and one son (Richard).

His parents and three siblings preceded him in death.

He has one sister surviving, Alice Moeller. Richard never married, but is survived by a niece and nephew; seven great-nieces and nephews and 13 great-great-nieces and nephews.

Marvin J. Scholbrock

NEW HAMPTON —  Marvin J. Scholbrock, 75,   of New Hampton, died from complications of multiple sclerosis Thursday (March 17, 2005) at his home in New Hampton.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Parish- St. Mary's Center in New Hampton.

Burial with military honors will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Marvin Joseph Scholbrock was born Dec. 22, 1929, in Fort Atkinson to Joseph Herman and Frances (Baumler) Scholbrock. He was the eldest of five brothers and graduated from New Hampton High School in 1948. Marvin served in the United States Army in 1951 in the Korean conflict. He received the Korean Service Medal with the Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. He was a member of the 9th Regiment of the 2nd Division while stationed in Korea.

On Aug. 17, 1954, he wed Lorraine (Panoch) at Assumption Church in Cresco, Iowa. Marvin later had two children, Marilee Ione and Joseph Gregory. Marv worked as a mechanic for Chevy agencies in the local area and went on to run his own business, Marv's Auto Clinic, from 1973 to 1979. As a mechanic, he received several professional outstanding awards as an accomplished mechanic, which was his passion along with landscaping, farming, woodworking and motorcycling. He had an excitement for collecting toy tractors, antique guns, caps and tinkering with anything mechanical. He found great pleasure in tearing things apart and putting them back together again. In 1979, he accepted a position as street superintendent for the city of New Hampton and retired in 1992 due to health problems.

Marv loved his family and the outdoors and was very active before encountering this disabling disease.

He leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Lorraine; two children: Marilee (Jr.) Mai and Joseph (Judy) Scholbrock, both of New Hampton; seven grandchildren: Travis (Kari) Mai, Jason Mai, Heather Mai, Jayden Schwickerath, Jina, Joseph and Jerett Scholbrock; three brothers: Rueben (Lana) and Syl, both of Cedar Rapids, and Vern Scholbrock of Palo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Frances; and one brother, Daniel Martin Scholbrock.

Elaine Martha Keraus, the daughter of Edward Clyde and Martha Clara (Rockow) Buntenbach, was born Jan. 15,1921 at Klemme. She attended school in Klemme where she graduated from high school.

On May 20, 1941 Elaine was married to Verle "Bub" William Keraus at United Church of Christ in Klemme. Throughout their 59 years together Elaine was a solid partner and best friend to Bub. They were blessed with two sons and a daughter. Elaine devoted her full time and attention to her husband and entire family. She was a great homemaker. Her children describe her as a kind, gentle woman with a wonderful sense of humor. She was a devoted wife, nurturing mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was very accepting of people and their views. She truly had a passion and gift for socializing with people.

Elaine will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her family, special friend, Jim Howie, and others who have shared her life.

She was a member of United Presbyterian Church in Garner since 1949, where she served as an elder. She was  a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Garner.

Elaine is survived by her three children: Michael (Susie) Keraus of Boone, Kay (Dale) Henderson of Plano, Texas, and Lynn (Gail) Keraus of Garner; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward "Red" D. (Pat) Buntenbach of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.

MANLY — Geraldine W. Hyde, 90, of the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center, died Thursday (March 17, 2005) at the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Rock Falls United Methodist Church, Rock Falls, with Rev. Jim Turner officiating. Interment will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery.

Geraldine was born April 30, 1914, in Rock Falls, the daughter of William and Ethel (Schnartz) Edgar. She graduated from Rock Falls High School in 1931 and Iowa State Teachers College in 1933.

Geraldine married Forrest C. Hyde on Nov. 30, 1934, in Marshalltown. She would further her education, graduating from Mason City Junior College in 1957, then receiving a B.A. degree from Drake University in 1968. Geraldine taught school in Rock Falls for 24 years. She moved to Manly in November 2001.

She was a life member of Rock Falls United Methodist Church, where she was church organist for 30 years. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association, NEA-ISEA and the Rock Falls Cemetery Association.

Geraldine is survived by two sons, Robert Hyde and wife, Marilyn, of Rock Falls, James Hyde and wife, Sandra, of Northwood; one daughter, Barbara Eppens and husband, Duane, of Mason City; seven grandchildren, Brenda Wernet, Angee Marshall, Randee Hyde, Amy Roen, Tammy Borchardt, Mark Eppens and Chris Eppens; ten great grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Roland Edgar of Manly; sister-in-law, Evelyn Hyde of Independence; several nieces and nephews.

Donna Mae Hutzel was born May 7, 1929, the daughter of John and Violet (French) Kisner.

Donna graduated from Iowa Falls High School. She was united in marriage to Donald Hutzel on July 1, 1947. To this union nine children were born. Donna helped start the KH   8 Ball Women's Pool League in Mason City.

Donna loved hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, canning and cooking. Her greatest    love was spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and First United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her  children, Linda (Rex) Raine, Donneta (Josh) Lucas, Sandi (John) Firsching, Terry (Mike) Smith, David Hutzel, Rick (Cherry) Hutzel, Steve (Sherri) Hutzel, Donald J. and his fiancee (Susan) Hutzel and Mike (Karen) Hutzel; 24 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Virginia Jones, Marilyn Werner and Kathy Kisner; along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Allison Rose McAleer Peters came into our lives on Feb. 17, 1986. She was born at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, and lived in Mason City her entire life.

Allison received her education in the Mason City Public Schools. She was very actively involved throughout her education experience. In her younger years, she attended Hoover Elementary. She loved participating even at a young age. Allison began playing the violin and piano.

In sports, she was involved in figure skating, softball and swim club. In addition, her love for dance began as she both danced and acted in many productions by The Studio for the Performing Arts.

As Allison entered Roosevelt Middle School, she added volleyball and track to her many activities.

Allison began Mason City High School and loved being a Mohawk. She continued her involvement in both athletics and academics. She competed in volleyball and tennis, lettering both her junior and senior years.

A great source of pride  for Allison centered on her involvement with the Mohawk Danzers. It was truly one of her greatest thrills to have the honor and privilege of dancing with an outstanding group of young women who brought home the school's first-ever state championship her senior year.

In addition, Allison was very involved in her academics. She was on the A honor roll every semester of high school. Other recognitions included being on the CIML All Academic Team throughout her high school career. She was also recognized by being in the National Honor Society her junior and senior years.

Allison loved many activities while in high school. These included being the sports editor, a member of the Student Senate and on the committee for the Mason City Youth Task Force. She served on various community service projects. She was also chosen Sunrise Rotary Student of the Month. Finally, Allison played the violin for 10 years, was a member of the MCHS Orchestra and was voted president of the orchestra her senior year.

After graduating with the class of 2004, Allison proudly became an Iowa Hawkeye, attending the University of Iowa. She was pursuing a career in international business and Spanish. In her only semester, she made the Dean's List.

Allison will be deeply missed by her many friends made throughout her short life. She was a dear and precious daughter, a beloved sister and a great friend to all who knew her.

She is survived by her parents, Jean McAleer and David Peters, Mason City; a brother, Andrew Peters, Mason City; paternal grandmother, Joan Peters, Webster City; aunts, Jeannie (Steve) Vande Zande, Webster City, Mary (Pete) Frost, Marshalltown, Barbara McAleer, Hermosa Beach, Calif., Beth (Dean) Hosch, Tega Cay, S.C.; uncles, Ron (Diane) Peters, Des Moines, Patrick (Linda) McAleer, Burnet, Texas, Timothy McAleer, Lomita, Calif., and many cousins.

Martha M. Cook


FOREST CITY — Martha M. Cook, 82, of Forest City and formerly of Mason City, died Thursday (March 17, 2005) at the Good Samaritan Center, Forest City.

Her funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church, 201 Willowbrook Drive, Mason City, with the Rev. Terry Hamilton-Poore officiating.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will follow at a later date following cremation.

Martha was born Jan. 26, 1923, in Springfield, Mo., a daughter of Mamie DeMaris Cotton and Ray Elliot Murray. She was raised in Kansas City, Mo. Her senior year of high school was spent in Des Moines, and she graduated from Roosevelt High School.

After graduation, Martha joined the United States Navy in Chicago, Ill., on May 13, 1943. She served as an airplane mechanic until Dec. 7, 1945. After her honorable discharge, Martha attended Drake University in Des Moines as an art major and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. There she met Robert Homer Cook and they were united in marriage on May 28, 1947, in Milwaukee, Wis. To their union, two daughters were born, Mary Jo and Sue Ann. The family left Milwaukee in 1961 when a business expansion brought them to Mason City.

Martha was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mason City for several years, worked with the Community Theatre, volunteered at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and was involved with the Girl Scouts through her daughters.

She became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in the 1970s, and in the 1980s worked at Sperry Univac in Clear Lake. She also worked at the Side Door Needle Arts shop in Mason City. Martha then worked in the circulation department of the Globe Gazette from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. She moved to Forest Plaza Assisted Living in Forest City in 2003 to be near her daughter. She later moved to the Good Samaritan Center.

Martha enjoyed arts and crafts and playing cards with her friends. She also loved animals, especially horses and dogs. She loved the Lord and made dear friends each and every place she went in life. She was thankful to the Lord for all of her blessings. 

Martha is survived by two daughters, Mary Jo Cook and her dear friend, Carol Mankert, of Brighton, Colo., and Sue and Lew Bruns of Forest City; one sister, Sally Jennison of Palo Alto, Calif.; two grandsons, Bob Kafer of Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., and Joe Kafer of Forest City; and four granddaughters, Amanda Kafer, Amy Kafer, Dee Bruns and Becky Bruns,  all of Forest City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ray Elliot Murray Jr. and Thomas Cotton Murray, and one granddaughter, Kristen Marie Kafer.

Thelma Opal Carroll


HAMPTON — Thelma Opal Carroll, 96, of Hampton, died Wednesday (March 16, 2005) at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.

A private family memorial service was held on Saturday, March 19, in West Union, with the Rev. Paul Fraser officiating. Inurnment was in the West Union Cemetery. Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton, was in charge of arrangements.

Thelma was born on Oct. 15, 1908, on the family farm in rural Fayette County. Her parents were Lindsay A. and Emma (Wegmiller) Grimes. After graduation from the West Union High School in 1927, she took the normal training course enabling her to teach rural school. After teaching rural school for several years, she continued her education at the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and also at Coe College in Cedar Rapids. She then taught in Stanley, Cresco and Sumner for several years.

On Aug. 30, 1947, she married Ross R. Carroll at her Aunt Pauline Bradley's home in Duluth, Minn. The couple lived on an acreage outside of Sumner, where Thelma devoted herself to homemaking and raising the couple's daughter.

In 1958, Thelma again attended college, at Upper Iowa University in Fayette. She earned her bachelor of arts degree in 1960 and began teaching junior high English in the Charles City School District, where she taught for 14 years until her retirement in 1974.

In 1995, Thelma moved to Heritage Place in Hampton where she lived until moving to the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in December 2004. She was grateful for the wonderful care she received from every member of the FGH staff.

Thelma was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hampton. She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of Madonna White Shrine in Waterloo.

Thelma enjoyed time spent with friends at the Hampton Senior Center playing cards, bingo and visiting. She loved spending time with her family. She spent several weeks each year with her sisters in West Union, where they would enjoy days spent reminiscing, shopping and playing cards. She especially loved days spent traveling to Ankeny with her daughter to be with her granddaughter and great-granddaughter.

Living family members include her daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and John Byrne, Hampton; granddaughter and husband, Amanda and Joseph Reysack, and great-granddaughter, Amber Lauren Reysack, all of Ankeny; two sisters, Mary Brandt and Beverly Gruhn, and a brother-in-law, C.J. Brandt, all of West Union.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ross, a brother, Glenn Grimes, and a sister, Lois Strohschein.

Betty Lucille Jimenez was born May 20, 1934, in Rockwell, the daughter of Elmer and Velma (Fuller) Pope. She attended Sheffield High School.

She was united in marriage to James Jimenez on Sept. 20, 1959, in Hampton, and to this union two children were born.

Betty had many jobs, but she enjoyed working for Deckers, Armour and ConAgra. She retired in 1997. She always looked forward to going to work and doing a good job. Betty was known for being the backbone and the rock for all of her family.

Betty was known for her cooking especially preparing her Sunday tacos for her family. Those who knew her will remember her for her coffee and the time spent at her kitchen table. Betty was also a lover of the local car races, where her son, Daniel, drove a hobby stock. She took great pride in his accomplishments. She spent the rest of her time playing bingo, baking and was always looking for a good deal at the Salvation Army, where her good friend, Mary, worked.

Betty's greatest love was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She was member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Betty is survived by her husband, James Jimenez, of Mason City; children, Daniel Jimenez and friend, Donna, of Mason City, Paige (Tim) Merrill, of Mason City; grandchildren Wesley, Jay, Gabriel, Jamie, David and Cooper; siblings, MaryAnn Foster, of Mason City, Beverly (Harry) Gamble, of Swea City, Georgia Smit, of Sheffield, brother Rolland "Shorty" (Cindy) Pope, of Mason City, Cynthia "Sue" Pope of Sheffield, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

THORNTON — Reva Unger of Clear Lake passed away at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa on Thursday (March 17, 2005) at the age of 82.

Her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Thornton United Methodist Church with Rev. Rose Calderon-Kahn presiding. Interment will be in the Meservey Cemetery.

Reva was born Sept. 20, 1922, to Walter and Letha (Criswell) Estel in Tingley, Iowa. She graduated from Fertile High School.

On Dec. 17, 1941 Reva married Lawrence Marlow in Tama, Iowa. To this union five children were born: Maureen (Harlan) Leake, Mason City, Marjorie (Garry) Benson, New Hampton, Ann Dirks, Thornton, James (Connie) Marlow, Charles City, and Jeanie (Gary) Conrad, Clear Lake. Reva loved her family and was blessed with 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

In her zest for life, she loved to dance and crochet, and was known to have a great sense of humor.
