Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with the Rev. Ron Stein of the First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Viva Dyre was born on Jan. 23, 1909, at Yocum, Morgan County, Kentucky. He was the son of Richard and Mary “Combs” Dyre. He moved with his parents to Rock Falls, Iowa, in 1914 where they farmed. Later the family moved to the Asbury Farm where he could attend school in Mason City, then they farmed near Emery, Iowa.

He was married on Jan. 29, 1930, to Beatrice Sears, the daughter of Clem and Emma “Stokes” Sears.

They began their life farming north of Cartersville, Iowa, for 50 years before moving to Mason City in 1990. They observed their 68th wedding anniversary in January 1998. Beatrice preceded Viva on Dec. 1, 1998.

Viva is survived by his children, James and his wife, Colleen Dyre, of Clear Lake; daughters, Audrey Huff of Mason City; Gloria and her husband, Gary George, of Northwood; Janice Rippen of Osage; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Jo Dyer; a brother-in-law, Guyman Sears; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Dyre.

Viva loved remembering the old days; his memory of them was shared by many over the years, having old pictures and books of bygone years. He kept figures like a mathematician. Some of his favorites were of selling separated cream to Swift and Co., for 20 cents a pound, extra eggs at 11 cents a dozen, and hens for 15 cents a pound. In 1931 the grocery bill for June was $6.24, 10 gallons of gas was $1.56, and in 1937 he bought their first tractor, a John Deere B, for $750, and 50 gallons of tractor fuel was $3.25. Viva also raised livestock common to the farm such as milking cows, hogs, chickens and his dogs.

He bought one of the first hay balers in the country that would have two men tying the bales with wire. He did custom baling for more than 30 years. In 1942, he was elected as Owen Township assessor at a salary of $4 a day, then becoming a part-time field assessor for the county. He did this for 35 years along with his farming and custom work. During the war years, his fields of hemp were cut and delivered to the plants at Emery and Rockford for making rope.

He loved his gardens of vegetables and flowers, with gladiolus being his specialty followed by his roses. Viva shared his life with many friends and family through the years.

Sunday afternoon ballgames with neighbors in the pastures, fishing and Saturday nights in Cartersville for the street dances and listening to country music were a favorite pastime. We never tired of hearing about his past and the history of Mason City and the surrounding area.

Viva was active in the Farm Program and was elected to the township committee where he served with the ASCS for 20 years.

He and his wife were mostly homebodies but they enjoyed a trip to California and two to Florida with family and friends.

Emiel Peter Engels was born Oct. 24, 1912, in Anawan, Ill., to August and Louise (Taets) Engels. He was the first child of eight children born to his parents and moved to Rock Falls in 1918, where he attended school. In 1928, Emiel moved with his family to the Rockford area.

Emiel was inducted into the United States Army on Sept. 2, 1942, from Camp Dodge, Iowa, and served his country during World War II. After honorably and faithfully completing his duties, Emiel was formally discharged from his military service on Oct. 23, 1945, from Camp Polk, Louisiana.

At the 1948 New Year’s Eve dance in Manly, Emiel met the love of his life, Helen Louise Ewen. The couple was united in marriage on Aug. 28, 1948, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dougherty. They continued to enjoy dancing, playing cards, especially 500, with relatives and friends and became the proud parents of five children.

Emiel was a well-known livestock and grain farmer in the Rockford area. His highest priority was always the interests of his family. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford and the American Legion posts in Rockwell and Rockford.

Some of Emiel’s leisure activities and interests throughout his life included farming with John Deere equipment, camping, fishing, playing pool, avidly reading the National Geographic and Readers Digest magazines, watching western movies or reading books based on the Old West era. He is described as a quiet and kind man with a strong faith. He had a wonderful sense of humor and delighted in grilling steaks or eating the great homecooked meals and pies that Helen prepared.

Beyond farming, some friends and relatives will recall Emiel’s employments at Nachurs Fertilizer or working as the assistant grounds keeper at the Rockford Country Club. Emiel retired in 1975 and moved from the farm to his home in Rockford.

Emiel will be dearly missed by all who have shared in his life.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen L. Engels of Rockford; his children, August “Gus” (Marilyn) Engels of Rockford, Steve (Sue) Engels of Plainfield, LuAnn (Glen) Engels-Hepker of Mason City, Chuck Engels of Rockford and Lisa (Jeff) Kelley of Rockford; and his sister, Madelyn Rottinghaus of Mason City. Emiel will also be a cherished memory of his six grandchildren, Michael (Patti) Engels, Rebecca Engels, Todd Engels, Heather Engels, Melissa Engels and Christian Engels; his three step-grandchildren, Andy Hilbrands, Renee Kelley and Shawna Kelley; his two great-grandchildren, Alexia and Brendan Engels and numerous other relatives and friends.

Preceding Emiel in death are his parents, August and Louise Engels; two sisters, Mary Crowell and Alberta Huntley; two sisters in infancy; and two brothers, John and Charlie Engels.
