Justice Sullivan

BUFFALO CENTER — Justice Sullivan, 89, of   Buffalo Center died Monday (Dec. 19, 2005) at the Titonka Care Center in Titonka.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Buffalo Center with Mr. Perry Aalgaard officiating. Burial will be at East Cemetery in Rake with military honors given by the Buffalo Center VFW-American Legion Color Guard.

Justice Arthur Sullivan was born Dec. 22, 1915, to John J. and Bertha (Thompson) Sullivan in Faribault County, Minn. Justice was the youngest of nine children born to these Norwegian immigrants.

Before Bertha’s death on Jan. 1, 1916, she arranged for Justice to live with another Norwegian family, Seward and Hannah (Fjetland) Sorenson of Frost, Minn. Justice attended country schools through the eighth grade and was confirmed into the Lutheran faith on May 11, 1930, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Rake.

Although never adopted, Justice used the Sorenson surname until he was drafted into the U.S. Army on Oct.1, 1941. He served as a Coast Artillery Gunman while stationed in California and Hawaii.

During his years of military service during World War II he was awarded the American Defense Service Medal, American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Justice was honorably discharged on Nov. 12, 1945, at Camp McCoy, Wis.

Justice met Viola Cole in 1940 when she came to work at the Sorenson family farm. During his time in Hawaii, he collected shells that he made into necklaces for his future bride and sent her other unique gifts including a hula outfit complete with grass skirt.

After returning from military service, Justice began working for Jensvold’s on March 1, 1946. As he once said, he needed a job and a new suit before getting married. Justice Sullivan and Viola Cole were married April 14, 1946, at the Methodist Church in Amboy, Minn. The ceremony was a double wedding with Viola’s twin, Violet Cole, and her husband, Arnold Estebo.

Justice and Viola had two daughters, Carolyn Jean, born Jan. 28, 1951, and Marilyn Kay, born May 1, 1956. Justice was a strong believer in the importance of a good education and made sure that both his daughters continued their schooling, both graduating with university bachelor’s degrees.

Justice and Viola traveled to St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Australia and Colorado to visit their children and families.

Justice and Viola joined Bethlehem Lutheran Church in 1947. Justice served three terms on the Church Council and was a church member at the time of his death.

Justice was a patriotic man and was very active in the American Legion Post 21 and served at the post level as commander, sergeant at arms, adjutant and in other positions. He was an 8th District vice commander. He also marched in many Buffalo Center Memorial Day parades as a member of the color guard. On March 15, 1999, he received a certificates recognizing more than 50 years of continuous membership in the American Legion.

Justice volunteered his time assisting many veterans in the local area during his 33 year tenure with the Commission of Veterans Affairs. To recognize his contributions to the organization, he received a glass-encased U.S. flag that had been flown over the U.S. Capitol.

On July 31, 1983, Justice “Sully” retired as a parts manager for Jensvold’s. But it seemed that he never really retired. When he wasn’t volunteering for veterans, he was busy with house projects for himself and later his daughter, Carolyn.

One of the greatest joys in Justice’s retirement years was the birth of his only granddaughter, Andrea Boyce, whom he declared to be his “Little Princess.”

Justice lived with Viola in their Buffalo Center home until Dec. 7, 2005, when he was admitted to the Blue Earth United Hospital, Blue Earth, Minn. Following recuperation from surgery, he transferred to the Titonka Care Center in Titonka, where, on Dec. 19, 2005, he passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Justice touched many lives and will be missed by his family, friends and members of the community.

Justice is survived by his wife of 59 years, Viola (Cole) Sullivan of Buffalo Center; daughter Carolyn Sullivan, Buffalo Center, daughter Marilyn Boyce; son-in-law Randy Boyce; and granddaughter, Andrea Boyce, all of Littleton, Colo.

Justice is also survived by one brother, Glenn Sullivan of Runnemede, N.J.; six sisters-in-law, Beatrice Sullivan of Grand Rapids, Mich., Gretchen Sullivan of Bemidji, Minn., Margaret Sorenson of Blooming Prairie, Minn., Dorothy Treanor of Mankato, Minn., Violet Estebo of Amboy, Minn., and Alice Mahler of Denver, Colo.; and two brothers-in-law: Charles Wishart of Mapleton, Minn. and James Cole of Amboy, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents (both Sullivan and Sorenson); infant brother and sister twins; sister, Alma (Sullivan) Nelson; brothers, Erwin, Lester, Clifford and Clarence Sullivan, Howard and Selmer Sorenson; and sister, Senora (Sorenson) Lee; and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
