Marjory Mason

BOISE, Idaho — On Nov. 26, 2005, we lost our beloved grandmother, who was a shining example to all of us of how we should live our lives through quiet faith, kindness and patient understanding. We will miss her gentle soul and mourn the loss of our family connection to another era. She found good in everyone and had a special connection with children.

Marjory was born on Dec. 14, 1903, just three days before the Wright brothers’ famous flight at Kitty Hawk. She was raised in Fertile, Iowa, on a farm run by her parents (Sander and Carrie Sanderson), five brothers and one sister. Her Norwegian immigrant grandfather was a teacher and taught the last Winnebago Indian chief to live in that area to speak English. She saw the last Native American camp at Indian Rock and saw the first automobile drive into Fertile. Despite the difficult work and hardship of life on the farm, she managed to attend college and taught school at the tender age of 18.

Eventually, Marjory met and married Earl Baker in 1924, who was also a teacher and principal. The couple moved to Colorado where she continued to teach in small schools, moving to a new one every few years. While they lived outside of Sterling, Colo., she gave birth to her son, Richard, in 1925. On the drive home from the hospital with her newborn son, their car was overrun by a huge dust storm. The stories she told of the difficult life in the dustbowl were astounding.

World War II brought her back to teaching in Snyder and Monte Vista where the winter temperatures could dip to 50 below zero. Her son, Richard, enlisted in the Navy in 1942, serving for three years in the Pacific. It was shortly thereafter that she divorced and decided to continue her studies, earning her degree and life teaching certificate in 1948.

She moved to Twin Falls where she taught eighth-grade history and geography for six years. In 1954, she was offered a position in Mason City, Iowa, where she taught junior high geography for 16 years. She remained in Mason City for nearly 10 years after retiring, deciding to move to Boise, Idaho, in 1979 to be near her two brothers living there and their families.

In Boise, she was active in her church and there met Floyd Mason who she married in 1983 (when she was 79 and he was 83). They were happily married for three years before he passed away.

Marjory has been a constant source of inspiration for all of her grandchildren, nieces and nephews and their extended families. She was the historian of the family and taught us many things about life. Even in her later years she sought out learning opportunities and new adventures. On her 90th birthday she celebrated by flying in a hot air balloon; on her 95th she rode in a helicopter and on her 100th she rode in a sidecar of a brand new Harley Davidson motorcycle (which was broadcast on television).

Despite her being the eldest child and having some very serious health problems as a girl, she outlived all her siblings. Her incredible memory and ability to discuss current events and politics were difficult to match even in her final days. We will miss her terribly, but rejoice in the life that she led and the lessons she left in us.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, 2005, at Boise First Congregational United Church of Christ in Boise, Idaho.
