MASON CITY — Darlene M. DeMaris, 75, of
17396 Kingbird Ave., died Thursday (Aug.
4, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North
Iowa.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m.
Monday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore
Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in
Mason City, with the Rev. Sam Hamilton-Poore
officiating. Graveside services will be
10 a.m. Tuesday in the Manly Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m.
Sunday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial
Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason
City. There will be one hour of
visitation prior to the service Monday.

Darlene M. DeMaris was born Sept. 25,
1929, in Northwood, the daughter of
Walter and Mable (Norris) Benton.
Darlene and her family lived in
Northwood until she was 4 years old.
They then moved to Manly, where she and
her sisters, Marie, Virginia and Ginger,
attended the Manly School System.
In 1946, Darlene was united in marriage
to Donald Portis of Mason City. They
lived there for 21 years. To this union
four children were born; Steve, Mike,
Donna and Debra. Darlene and Donald were
divorced in 1967.
She was then united in marriage to Arvid
"Bud" DeMaris, and they made their home
in Fertile. To this union two children
were born, Cathy and Brian. They moved
back to Manly, where they lived until
Bud's death in 1997.
Darlene moved to Lincoln, Neb., and
lived with her daughter, Cathy and her
husband Phil. In 2005, Darlene's health
brought her back home to Mason City,
where she lived at the Willow Pointe
Assisted Living facility.
Darlene is survived by her children,
Donna Corell (Gary Eggerth), of Clear
Lake, Debra (Chad) Vorce, of Doniphan,
Mo., Cathy (Phil) Gielenfeld, of Mason
City, Brian (Cheryl) DeMaris, of Jesup;
several grandchildren and
great-grandchildren whom she loved
dearly; four stepsons, Jack (Deb)
DeMaris, of Hanlontown, Bob DeMaris, of
Mason City, Rick DeMaris, of Mason City,
and Tim DeMaris, of Mason City;
sisters-in-law from both marriages,
along with many nieces, nephews and
friends.
Darlene is preceded in death by her
parents, Walter and Mable Benton;
husband, Arvid "Bud" DeMaris; two sons,
Steve and Mike Portis; one sister,
Marion "Virginia" Suby; and one stepson,
Jay DeMaris.
The family of Darlene DeMaris would like
to extend a thank-you at this time to
the doctors and nurses from the critical
care unit at Mercy Medical Center-North
Iowa for taking such good care of their
mother during her illness. The nurses
went beyond their job in making the
family comfortable during that time.
Words can't express how much that means
to our family. Once again, we thank you
from our hearts.

Viola Wells
MASON CITY — Viola Wells, 89, of Mason
City, entered into her eternal home in
Heaven on Aug. 4, 2005, at the Muse
Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit,
surrounded by her family.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30
a.m. Monday at the Hanford Community
Church, 12411 Spruce Ave. in Mason City,
with Pastor Mark Culham and the Rev.
Raymond Corlew officiating. Interment
will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 5:30
p.m. Sunday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore
Colonial Chapel. There will also be a
visitation one hour prior to the service
on Monday at Hanford Community Church.
The family would suggest that the
memorials go to the Hanford Community
Church Missions or Hospice of North
Iowa.
Viola was born on Sept. 9, 1915, in
Tokio, N.D. She is the daughter of
Torger (Tom) and Sarah Michelina (Askildson)
Haukness. The family later moved to
Mason City. She was confirmed in 1929 at
Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She graduated
from Mason City High School in 1933. In
August of 1963, she graduated in the
first practical nursing class of Mason
City Junior College. Viola loved the
nursing profession, working with local
doctors at the Park Clinic, nursing care
centers and home health.
Viola was married to James Raymond "Jim"
Wells in Clarion, Iowa, on July 1, 1937.
Viola, along with her husband, Jim,
owned and operated Seclusion Point
Resort, Dent, Minn., from 1968 to 1976.
She attended Hanford Community Church.
She was a foster grandparent, working
with students at Madison Elementary
School; a volunteer at the Muse Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit; and led Bible
studies and taught Sunday school.
She enjoyed her family, many friends,
sewing, ceramics, reading, handcrafts,
flowers and traveling to Norway three
times, and stated the best trip was with
her daughters and granddaughters in
1995.
She was dearly loved and will be missed
by her children: Constance (Connie)
Wheeler (Norman) of Dent, Minn., James
(Jim) Wells (Carol) of Osage, and
Patricia (Pat) Corlew (Ray) of
Davenport; grandchildren, Sharon Clausen
(Mark), David Wheeler (Barb), Christine
Doe (Bob), Jeff Wells (Lisa), Jay Wells,
Jim Wells (Marlys), John Wells, Dawn
Corlew, and Kevin Corlew (Amy);
great-grandchildren: Adam, Kaylinn,
Christopher, Erica, Alyssa, Scott, Ryan,
Chloe, Sam, Kenna, Gabriel and a baby
boy to be born in October;
great-great-grandchildren: Alec and
Hannah; a brother Louis Haukness (Eva)
of Estherville; several nephews and a
niece, and several cousins and a special
cousin, Helen Leigh.
Viola is preceded in death by her
husband, Jim, in March 1975; her
parents; brother Clarence Haukness;
sisters, Alice Lutcavish and Lillian
England; and infant brother and sister.

Algona, died Wednesday (Aug. 3, 2005) at
Good Samaritan Communities, Algona.

Jeanne Elaine Skilling was born March
10, 1928, in Austin, Minn., daughter of
Vernon W. and Orla C. (Hanson) Burns.
Jeanne grew up in Austin attending
Columbus Grade School and graduating
from St. Augustine High School in 1946.
She later received an electronics
technology degree from the CIE Institute
of Electronics.
Jeanne moved to Algona in January of
1947 and was united in marriage to
Edward C. Skilling on June 4, 1949.
Following marriage, she worked at the
Mainliner Café, and in 1963 she began
working at Snap-On, retiring in April of
1991.
She enjoyed crocheting, needlework,
sewing and quilting. She was an active
member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a
member of the Machinist Local 1045,
serving as past president.
She is survived by four children, David
Skilling and his wife, Peggy, of Algona,
Joann Smith and her husband, Wayne, of
St. Peter, Minn., John Skilling and his
wife, Deb, of Mason City, and Danette
Miller and her husband, Greg, of
Humboldt; eight grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; one brother, John
Burns and his special friend, Steve
Pederson, of Minneapolis, Minn., and
many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband, Edward, on July
23, 1997; two grandsons, Marshall Miller
and Jae Smith; and one sister, Merilyn
Boekelman.

Dale was born to Charles
and Serepta (McMillan)
Schindele on Aug. 28,
1918, in Clemons, Iowa.
He married Betty Jane
Tumilson on May 19,
1946, at the Zion
Lutheran Church in
Rockford. To this union
two daughters were born.
They farmed near Floyd
until 1953 and moved to
Rudd.
Prior to entering the
service, Dale worked for
Oswald Strand in Manly.
He entered the service
on March 19, 1942, and
was honorably discharged
on Oct. 7, 1945. Dale
was a parachute rigger
and repairman for the
U.S. Army Air Corps
stationed in Polebrook,
England. He received the
Bronze Star, the Silver
Star, a Good Conduct
Medal, and five overseas
bars.
Dale owned and operated
a portable feed mill
from December of 1953 to
March 1964.
In November of 1965, he
started work at Child's
Company in Charles City
as a typewriter
technician, retiring in
1982 with 27 years of
service.
Dale continued to enjoy
life by playing cards,
fishing, mowing lawns,
and working on farms
until his illness.

wife, Betty, of Rudd;
his two daughters,

TEMPE, Ariz. — Dr.
Vincent G. Reuter passed
away Aug. 1, 2005, from
complications of
Parkinson's disease.
Vincent Reuter was born
Sept. 27, 1921, in
Gilbertville, Iowa. He
was the oldest of eight
children. He grew up in
Mason City, Iowa, and
graduated from Saint
Joseph High School in
Mason City.
Vince earned his AA
degree in engineering
from Mason City Junior
College in 1941, then
enlisted in the Army.
While serving in the
Army he earned a
certificate in Material
Inspection and Testing
at Illinois Institute of
Technology. He then
attended Officer
Candidate School and
transferred into the
Transportation Corps as
an officer. He was
stationed in Skagway,
Alaska, until 1946. In
1971, Vincent retired
from the Army Reserves
as a lieutenant colonel.
Using the GI Bill, Vince
attended the University
of Iowa and completed
his bachelor's degree in
commerce (1947), master
of arts degree in
industrial management —
industrial engineering
(1948), Ph.D in labor
and industrial
management (1952).
He met the love of his
life, Clara Ranalletta,
while he was working in
management for Curtis
Wright Aircraft Engines
in Woodbridge, N.J.
Vince and Clara married
in 1956 and this past
June 22, celebrated
their 48th wedding
anniversary.
In 1961, Vince began his
work at Arizona State
University in the
College of Business as
an associate professor.
He was a member of Beta
Gamma Sigma. He wrote
numerous articles and
co-authored a textbook
on production operations
management. He was the
past chairman of
numerous committees at
ASU including, the
University Insurance and
Retirement Committee,
Safety Committee,
Standards Committee,
Beta Gamma Sigma
Nominating Committee,
and the Improvement of
Instruction and Testing
Committee.
Vince retired from
teaching and research in
1988 as a full
professor. An avid fan
of Sun Devil student
athletes, Vince followed
the professional sports
careers of former ASU
athletes, and even as
recently as this season,
could recite their
statistics.
Vince and Clara had two
children: John Thomas
Reuter of Tempe, Ariz.,
and Christine Marie
(Reuter) Beckman and her
husband, Daniel, of
Gilbert, Ariz.;
grandchildren, Bridget
Beckman, age 6, and
Elliot Beckman, age 4.
Vince is survived by
three sisters,

Johnston, Iowa, Joanne
Coyle and her husband,
Vince, of Deadwood,
S.D., and Marlene Reuter
of Glendale, Ariz. Also,
a sister-in-law, Mary
Reuter (wife of the late
Wilfred Mike Reuter) of
Mason City, Iowa.

Richard Joseph Bock was
born March 9, 1933, at
Foxholm, N.D., the son
of Henry and Rose
(Lenertz) Bock. He
attended school at
Minot, N.D. and later
received his GED.
Richard proudly served
his country in the
United States Army
during the Korean
Conflict.
On April 28, 1956, he
was united in marriage
to Norma Hargrave at
Charles City. To
this union, ten children
this union, ten children
were born. Norma died on
Nov. 15, 1979. Richard
married Wilma Friedrichs
on Aug. 13, 1980 at
Charles City.
His working career
included employment for
35 years with Gil White
Plumbing and Heating. He
was a member of the
Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church, Knights
of Columbus, Veterans of
Foreign Wars and the
Moose Lodge. Richard's
interests included
golfing, fishing,
bowling, playing cards,
and dancing. His family
and friends will always
remember how he looked
forward to spending time
with them and helping
them with whatever they
needed.

area. He enjoyed working
together with his
neighbors. Mike also did
custom work, such as
combining and baling.
He loved his family and
liked to "romp" with his
grandchildren and tell
stories. They will
always remember grandpa
with his striped
overalls. Mike enjoyed
watching boxing and was
once a boxer in his
younger days. He was an
avid Iowa Hawkeye
football fan. He also
enjoyed fishing in
Northern Minnesota and
Ontario, Canada, and
woodworking.
Mike was a member of the
Fertile Lutheran Church
and later the Pilot Knob
Lutheran Church, Fertile
Consolidated School
Board of Education,
board of the Fertile
Creamery, and the
Fertile Lions Club. He
also was the Cerro Gordo
County Weed Commissioner
for several years.
Mike is survived by his

Donald R. Sunne was born
in Wakesha, Wis., on May
26, 1927, the son of
Oscar and Hazel (Copp)
Sunne. He grew up in Eau
Claire, Wis. He served
his country in the U.S.
Navy during World War II
in the Philippine
Islands.
On May 28, 1949, he
married Ruth Irvine at
Peace Lutheran Church in
Menomonie, Wis. Four
children were born to
this union.
Don worked in plumbing
sales. In 1961, the
family moved to Fertile.
Don retired from
Wolverine Brass in 1998.
Don's faith was an
important part of his
life. He was baptized
and confirmed at First
Lutheran Church in Eau
Claire and taught Sunday
school and served on
church councils
throughout his adult
life.
He also served on the
Board of Regents of
Waldorf College in
Forest City for 12
years.
The Christian legacy he
left is treasured by his
family and friends and
his sense of humor will
never be forgotten.
Don is survived by his
wife, Ruth, of Fertile;
three daughters, Susan
(Roger) Ouverson of
Vinton, Julia (Edward)
Olson of Joice, and Mary
(Dennis) Lee of
Zumbrota, Minn.; one
son, David (Julie) Sunne
of Dundee; and a sister,
Doris (James) Anderson

He will also be missed
by his 15 grandchildren

Eleanor worked for

secretary for the
Riceville High School
and also for the Mt. Ayr
High School, and was
very active in the Iowa
Association of
Educational Office
Personnel.
Eleanor and Leslie
resided in Riceville,
Charles City and in
1990, moved to Manly.
She enjoyed being an
avid seamstress and
quilter, trout fishing,
baking, and playing
cards, but her great
love and enjoyment was
her family and
grandchildren.
She was a member of the

Manly, and also was a
member of the Mason City

was inducted into the
Army-Air Corps on Feb.
6, 1943, at Ft.
Leavenworth, Kan., and
served in the Burma
Theater area with the
51st Flight Control
Squadron until his
honorable discharge on
Dec. 14, 1946, at Ft.
Leavenworth, Kansas as a
staff sergeant.
He was united in
marriage to Frances A.
Quam Eckert on Feb. 6,
1947, in the Little
Brown Church in Nashua.
Throughout his life
Allen was employed as a
carpenter and cement
finisher in Mason City
and the North Iowa area.
He loved his work and
helped build hundreds of
homes until his
retirement in the spring
of 1980.
Allen loved to be
outdoors, but his great
love and enjoyment was
his wife, children,
grandchildren, and
great-grandchildren, and
spending time with them.
Allen was baptized and
reaffirmed the faith of
his baptism through
confirmation at the
Trinity Lutheran Church
in Mason City, and had
been a lifelong member
of the church.

Stacyville Community
Nursing Home.
Gertrude was born Aug.
7, 1911, in Cohasset,
Minn., the daughter of
William and Sophia
(Miller) Wolf. She moved
to Osage, Iowa, when she
was a child.
Gertrude married Raymond
Mauer on Feb. 4, 1937,
at the Visitation
Catholic Church in
Stacyville. She taught
in rural school for a
year before her marriage
to Raymond. They lived
and farmed outside of
Stacyville for 28 years.
Gertrude moved to
Stacyville in 1965. She
worked at the Stacyville
Community Nursing Home.
Gertrude was a member of
Visitation Catholic
Church and Christian
Mothers.
Mass of Christian Burial
will be held at 10:30
a.m. Thursday at the

Church in Stacyville

Harlan was born on March
5, 1939, in Mower
County, Minn. He was the
oldest of three boys
born to John and Ena
(Nagle) Bell. Harlan
graduated from St.
Ansgar High School in
1958. He then attended
the Iowa State Teachers
College in Cedar Falls
receiving his bachelor's
degree in 1963. He went
on to receive his master
of arts degree at the
University of Iowa in
1971.
During his teaching
career he taught at the
Vinton School for the
Blind, Vinton Public
School, Charter Oak-Ute,
and Blakesburg. He was a
principal in Urbana and
professor at Council
Bluffs Junior College.
He finished his teaching
career in Traer, Iowa
where he retired in
2001.
Harlan was a member of
the Vinton Masonic Lodge
No. 62 and the secretary
for the Black Hawk Lodge
No. 65. He also served
as the treasurer of the
El Kahir Shine Unit No.
101.
He loved to travel and
spent many of his trips
visiting family and
friends.
Harlan was preceded in
death by his parents,
John and Ena Bell; and
his brother, Russell
Bell.
He is survived by his
brother, Jim (Nancy)
Bell; sister-in-law,
Sandy Bell; five nieces,
Gail (Steve) Smith,

Orville L. Klipping was
born Jan. 5, 1919, in
Forest City, the son of
Leonard and Edna
(Jacobson) Klipping. He

in Forest City. He
worked on a farm in the
Britt area, and then
went to work for the
railroad in Oklahoma.
Orville hauled cattle
for Sanke Truck Company
in Britt. He started
working in 1954 for
Lehigh Cement Plant and
retired in 1983.
Orville loved tools,
working on motors,
fishing, hunting and
gardening. His greatest
love was spending time
with his family,
especially his nieces
and nephews.
Orville is survived by

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. —
Vern E. Nelson, 86, of
San Clemente, Calif.,
passed away Tuesday
evening (July 26, 2005)
at his home.
In spite of surviving
quadruple heart surgery
in 1997, he succumbed
quickly to mesothelioma
cancer.
Vern was a retired chief
electrician at the
American Crystal Sugar
Company in Mason City.
Vern was an
electricianist First
Class in the U.S. Navy,
having served in World
War II from 1942 to
1945. He also served in
the Navy Reserves for
four years in Seattle,
Wash.
He was also an excellent
handyman, a great
planner, and had been a
strong leader in the
church, as well as in
many other areas of his
life.
He was born and raised
in Lake Mills and lived
in Mason City for 40
years. He and his wife,
Marie, moved to San
Clemente, Calif., in
1996 to be close to
their daughters, Rachel
Grina, Melinda Masson,
Valerie Lamb and
Patricia Nelson.
He is survived by his
wife, daughters,
son-in-law, Maurice
Masson, and nine
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death
by his son, John, in
1988.
A memorial service will
be held at 3:30 p.m.
Thursday, Aug. 25, at
the San Clemente

Doris "Jean" (Ryan)
Walrod was born Sept.
18, 1926, in Rockwell
City, to James and
Minnie (Ehler) Ryan. She
lived on farms near
Rockwell City, Dows and
Rowan. She grew up in a
large family (five
brothers, four sisters —
sandwiched between two
sets of twins). In 1944,
she graduated from Rowan
High School. After
graduation, she worked
as a teletype operator
for Western Union in
Chicago, Ill.
In 1946, she met William
(Bill) Walrod. After a
four-month courtship,
they were married on
Jan. 15, 1947. To this
union three children
were born: Ricky
William, Veloice Sue and
Todd Elliot.
Jean enjoyed the role of
homemaker and mother.
She worked for 12 years
in the medical records
department at the
Belmond Community
Hospital. Along with
Bill, she attended
frequent school events
as their children grew
up. Jean loved to travel
with her family and
there were many camping
trips ranging from
weekend jaunts nearby or
longer trips up North or
out West.
Jean was always a
willing volunteer. She
was a member of the
United Methodist Church,
serving at various times
on the Administrative
Council, Trustees and
Staff Parish. She also
served faithfully in the
United Methodist Women
and Rebecca Circle. She
had been a member of the
Progress Club since
1967. She also had
worked in the
bereavement program for
Wright County Hospice.
Jean also was active in
the Democratic Party,
volunteering many hours
for various candidates
over the years.
Jean was preceded in
death by her husband,
Bill; son, Ricky; her
parents; four brothers:
Harold, Walter, Glen and
Daryl; and two sisters:
Alice Slatkoske and
Ethel Korth. After
Bill's death, Jean
wrote: "I believe I have
always loved the perfect
mate. … I know the true
love of my life. Life
has to end, but love
does not. … I truly
believe we will meet
again."
Jean is survived by
daughter, Veloice Huck
and her husband, Peter,
of Eden Prairie, Minn.;
son, Todd and his wife,
Ann, of Leland, Iowa;
grandchildren, Megan
