Darlene M. DeMaris

MASON CITY — Darlene M. DeMaris, 75, of 17396 Kingbird Ave., died Thursday (Aug. 4, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Sam Hamilton-Poore officiating. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Manly Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the service Monday.

Memorials may be directed to Darlene M. DeMaris Memorial Fund.

Darlene M. DeMaris was born Sept. 25, 1929, in Northwood, the daughter of Walter and Mable (Norris) Benton. Darlene and her family lived in Northwood until she was 4 years old. They then moved to Manly, where she and her sisters, Marie, Virginia and Ginger, attended the Manly School System.

In 1946, Darlene was united in marriage to Donald Portis of Mason City. They lived there for 21 years. To this union four children were born; Steve, Mike, Donna and Debra. Darlene and Donald were divorced in 1967.

She was then united in marriage to Arvid "Bud" DeMaris, and they made their home in Fertile. To this union two children were born, Cathy and Brian. They moved back to Manly, where they lived until Bud's death in 1997.

Darlene moved to Lincoln, Neb., and lived with her daughter, Cathy and her husband Phil. In 2005, Darlene's health brought her back home to Mason City, where she lived at the Willow Pointe Assisted Living facility.

Darlene is survived by her children, Donna Corell (Gary Eggerth), of Clear Lake, Debra (Chad) Vorce,  of Doniphan, Mo., Cathy (Phil) Gielenfeld, of Mason City, Brian (Cheryl) DeMaris, of Jesup; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly; four stepsons, Jack (Deb) DeMaris, of Hanlontown, Bob DeMaris, of Mason City, Rick DeMaris, of Mason City, and Tim DeMaris, of Mason City; sisters-in-law from both marriages, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

Darlene is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mable Benton; husband, Arvid "Bud" DeMaris; two sons, Steve and Mike Portis; one sister, Marion "Virginia" Suby; and one stepson, Jay DeMaris.

The family of Darlene DeMaris would like to extend a thank-you at this time to the doctors and nurses from the critical care unit at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa for taking such good care of their mother during her illness. The nurses went beyond their job in making the family comfortable during that time. Words can't express how much that means to our family. Once again, we thank you from our hearts.

Viola Wells


MASON CITY — Viola Wells, 89, of Mason City, entered into her eternal home in Heaven on Aug. 4, 2005, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hanford Community Church, 12411 Spruce Ave. in Mason City, with Pastor Mark Culham and the Rev. Raymond Corlew officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel. There will also be a visitation one hour prior to the service on Monday at Hanford Community Church.

The family would suggest that the memorials go to the Hanford Community Church Missions or Hospice of North Iowa.

Viola was born on Sept. 9, 1915, in Tokio, N.D. She is the daughter of Torger (Tom) and Sarah Michelina (Askildson) Haukness. The family later moved to Mason City. She was confirmed in 1929 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1933. In August of 1963, she graduated in the first practical nursing class of Mason City Junior College. Viola loved the nursing profession, working with local doctors at the Park Clinic, nursing care centers and home health.

Viola was married to James Raymond "Jim" Wells in Clarion, Iowa, on July 1, 1937. Viola, along with her husband, Jim, owned and operated Seclusion Point Resort, Dent, Minn., from 1968 to 1976. She attended Hanford Community Church.

She was a foster grandparent, working with students at Madison Elementary School; a volunteer at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit; and led Bible studies and taught Sunday school.

She enjoyed her family, many friends, sewing, ceramics, reading, handcrafts, flowers and traveling to Norway three times, and stated the best trip was with her daughters and granddaughters in 1995.

She was dearly loved and will be missed by her children: Constance (Connie) Wheeler (Norman) of Dent, Minn., James (Jim) Wells (Carol) of Osage, and Patricia (Pat) Corlew (Ray) of Davenport; grandchildren, Sharon Clausen (Mark), David Wheeler (Barb), Christine Doe (Bob), Jeff Wells (Lisa), Jay Wells, Jim Wells (Marlys), John Wells, Dawn Corlew, and Kevin Corlew (Amy); great-grandchildren: Adam, Kaylinn, Christopher, Erica, Alyssa, Scott, Ryan, Chloe, Sam, Kenna, Gabriel and a baby boy to be born in October; great-great-grandchildren: Alec and Hannah; a brother Louis Haukness (Eva) of Estherville; several nephews and a niece, and several cousins and a special cousin, Helen Leigh.

Viola is preceded in death by her husband, Jim, in March 1975; her parents; brother Clarence Haukness; sisters, Alice Lutcavish and Lillian England; and infant brother and sister.

Jeanne Elaine Skilling


ALGONA — Jeanne Elaine Skilling, 77, of Algona, died Wednesday (Aug. 3, 2005) at Good Samaritan Communities, Algona.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Algona, with the Rev. Steven Turner officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Algona.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, 218 S. Moore St. in Algona, and will continue one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

Jeanne Elaine Skilling was born March 10, 1928, in Austin, Minn., daughter of Vernon W. and Orla C. (Hanson) Burns. Jeanne grew up in Austin attending Columbus Grade School and graduating from St. Augustine High School in 1946. She later received an electronics technology degree from the CIE Institute of Electronics.

Jeanne moved to Algona in January of 1947 and was united in marriage to Edward C. Skilling on June 4, 1949. Following marriage, she worked at the Mainliner Café, and in 1963 she began working at Snap-On, retiring in April of 1991.

She enjoyed crocheting, needlework, sewing and quilting. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a member of the Machinist Local 1045, serving as past president.

She is survived by four children, David Skilling and his wife, Peggy, of Algona, Joann Smith and her husband, Wayne, of St. Peter, Minn., John Skilling and his wife, Deb, of Mason City, and Danette Miller and her husband, Greg, of Humboldt; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, John Burns and his special friend, Steve Pederson, of Minneapolis, Minn., and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward, on July 23, 1997; two grandsons, Marshall Miller and Jae Smith; and one sister, Merilyn Boekelman.

MASON CITY — Dale C. Schindele, 86, of 618 Depot St. in Rudd, died Friday (Aug. 5, 2005) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, 805 E. Main Ave. in Rockford, with Pastor Patricia Shaw officiating. Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Rockford with military honors accorded by the Walker-Graper American Legion Post 338 Unit.

CHARLES CITY — Richard Bock, 72, of Charles City, died Friday (Aug. 5, 2005) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Dale C. Schindele

RUDD — Dale Charles Schindele, 86, of 618 Depot St. in Rudd, died Friday (Aug. 5, 2005) morning, after a brief illness, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, 805 East Main Avenue in Rockford, with Pastor Patricia Shaw officiating.

Dale was born to Charles and Serepta (McMillan) Schindele on Aug. 28, 1918, in Clemons, Iowa.

He married Betty Jane Tumilson on May 19, 1946, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford. To this union two daughters were born. They farmed near Floyd until 1953 and moved to Rudd.

Prior to entering the service, Dale worked for Oswald Strand in Manly. He entered the service on March 19, 1942, and was honorably discharged on Oct. 7, 1945. Dale was a parachute rigger and repairman for the U.S. Army Air Corps stationed in Polebrook, England. He received the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, a Good Conduct Medal, and five overseas bars.

Dale owned and operated a portable feed mill from December of 1953 to March 1964.

In November of 1965, he started work at Child's Company in Charles City as a typewriter technician, retiring in 1982 with 27 years of service.

Dale continued to enjoy life by playing cards, fishing, mowing lawns, and working on farms until his illness.

Dale is survived by his wife, Betty, of Rudd; his two daughters, Marcia (John) Thomason of Leedey, Okla., and Rhonda (Scott) of Eau Claire, Wis.; "special" daughter and son-in-law, Edie and Steve Van Hauen of Waterloo; four grandchildren: Douglas Charles (Kris) Washington  of Hampton, Dawn Marie (Randy) Harrel of Leedey, Okla., Nicole Lynn Brown (fiancé, Darren)  of Eau Claire, Wis., and Kelly Mae (Kevin) Carrier of Marion; 11 great-grandchildren, Haley Dawn, Sydney Dayle, Jessica Merle, Hank Randall, and Jack Emery Harrel all of Leedey, Okla., Conner Charles, Kalynn Kristine, Samantha Jo, and Jakob Douglas all of Hampton, Jonathan Scott Carl Brown of Eau Claire, Wis., and Lauren Rebecca Carrier of Marion.

Dale is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; twin sister, Dallas Trettin; sisters, Bernadine Nicewarner and Pauline Radke; brothers, Morris and Milton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dr. Vincent G. Reuter


TEMPE, Ariz. — Dr. Vincent G. Reuter passed away Aug. 1, 2005, from complications of Parkinson's disease.

Vincent Reuter was born Sept. 27, 1921, in Gilbertville, Iowa. He was the oldest of eight children. He grew up in Mason City, Iowa, and graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Mason City.

Vince earned his AA degree in engineering from Mason City Junior College in 1941, then enlisted in the Army. While serving in the Army he earned a certificate in Material Inspection and Testing at Illinois Institute of Technology. He then attended Officer Candidate School and transferred into the Transportation Corps as an officer. He was stationed in Skagway, Alaska, until 1946. In 1971, Vincent retired from the Army Reserves as a lieutenant colonel.

Using the GI Bill, Vince attended the University of Iowa and completed his bachelor's degree in commerce (1947), master of arts degree in industrial management — industrial engineering (1948), Ph.D in labor and industrial management (1952).

He met the love of his life, Clara Ranalletta, while he was working in management for Curtis Wright Aircraft Engines in Woodbridge, N.J. Vince and Clara married in 1956 and this past June 22, celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary.

In 1961, Vince began his work at Arizona State University in the College of Business as an associate professor. He was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma. He wrote numerous articles and co-authored a textbook on production operations management. He was the past chairman of numerous committees at ASU including, the University Insurance and Retirement Committee, Safety Committee, Standards Committee, Beta Gamma Sigma Nominating Committee, and the Improvement of Instruction and Testing Committee.

Vince retired from teaching and research in 1988 as a full professor. An avid fan of Sun Devil student athletes, Vince followed the professional sports careers of former ASU athletes, and even as recently as this season, could recite their statistics.

Vince and Clara had two children: John Thomas Reuter of Tempe, Ariz., and Christine Marie (Reuter) Beckman and her husband, Daniel, of Gilbert, Ariz.; grandchildren, Bridget Beckman, age 6, and Elliot Beckman, age 4.

Vince is survived by three sisters, Marguerite Johnson of Johnston, Iowa, Joanne Coyle and her husband, Vince, of Deadwood, S.D., and Marlene Reuter of Glendale, Ariz. Also, a sister-in-law, Mary Reuter (wife of the late Wilfred Mike Reuter) of Mason City, Iowa.

Vince has many nieces and nephews including: Joe and wife, Vicki, of Mason City, Iowa, Tom Reuter and wife, Pam, of Forest City, Iowa, and Jane Ogez and husband, Fred, of Forest Lake, Minn.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Cecilia (Pint) Reuter; his brother, Wilfred (Mike) Reuter; and his sisters, Marilyn Young-Reuter, Dolores Reuter, and Rosemary Reuter.

Services were held Aug. 5, 2005, in Tempe, Ariz.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, Mount Carmel Conference, 2121 S. Rural Rd. Tempe, AZ, 85282.

CHARLES CITY — Richard Bock, 72, of Charles City, died Friday (August 5, 2005) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Richard Bock will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. The Reverend Carl Ries, pastor, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday where a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m., followed by the Rosary being led by the Knights of Columbus. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church .

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa, Charles City site.

Richard Joseph Bock was born March 9, 1933, at Foxholm, N.D., the son of Henry and Rose (Lenertz) Bock. He attended school at Minot, N.D. and later received his GED.

Richard proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

On April 28, 1956, he was united in marriage to Norma Hargrave at Charles City. To

this union, ten children this union, ten children were born. Norma died on Nov. 15, 1979. Richard married Wilma Friedrichs on Aug. 13, 1980 at Charles City.

His working career included employment for 35 years with Gil White Plumbing and Heating. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Moose Lodge. Richard's interests included golfing, fishing, bowling, playing cards, and dancing. His family and friends will always remember how he looked forward to spending time with them and helping them with whatever they needed.

Living family members include his wife, Wilma, of Charles City; nine children: Thomas (Julie) Bock of Charles City, Jane (Charles) Goedken of Urbandale,

Dolores (Ronald) Rosenbaum of Clear Lake, Rosemary (Mark) Hinders of Mitchell, Anastasia (Steven) Goche of Proctor, Ark., Patrick Bock of Phoenix, Ariz., David Bock of Charles City, Nancy (David) Butler of Memphis, Tenn., and Alan (Jackie) Bock of Mason City; 20 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Frances Welsh of Minot, N.D., and Anne Marie Ward of Richland, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Norma; a son, Charles Bock; and a sister, Virginia Denard.

Mildred was born June 8, 1926, in Osceola, the daughter of Glen and Hazel (Busick) Schader. She graduated from Council Bluffs High School. Mildred married Stanton Conger and they would later divorce. She married Ronald E. Beyer on June 10,1978, in Albert Lea, Minn.

Mildred worked for Winnebago Industries for 12 years. She retired in 1989. Mildred was a member of the Moose Lodge and VFW. She enjoyed camping and pets, especially her dog, Mitzi.

Mildred is survived by her husband, Ronald E. Beyer, of Fertile; son, Bob J. Conger and wife, Linda, of Osceola; daughters, Cindy Meier and husband, Kenny, of Blue Grass, and Susan Franklin  of Arizona; grandchildren: Micki, Stevi, and Marti Meier all of Blue Grass; and a brother, Bob Schader and wife, Beverly, of Osceola.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents.

L.B. ‘Mike' Wolfe


FERTILE — L.B. "Mike" Wolfe, 94, of rural Fertile, died Friday (Aug. 5, 2005) at the USA Heathcare, Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Pilot Knob Lutheran Church, 2391 330th Street, Forest City, with Pastors Robert Snitzer and Lindsay Jordan officiating. Burial will be at the Brush Point Cemetery, rural Fertile.

A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North Fourth Street in Clear Lake.

L.B. "Mike" Wolfe was born April 17, 1911, in Blairstown, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Alma (Dolge) Wolf. He attended school in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, and Forest City, Iowa.

Mike married Ruth Myhre on Aug. 26, 1936, in Fertile. They farmed in the Fertile-Forest City area. He enjoyed working together with his neighbors. Mike also did custom work, such as combining and baling.

He loved his family and liked to "romp" with his grandchildren and tell stories. They will always remember grandpa with his striped overalls. Mike enjoyed watching boxing and was once a boxer in his younger days. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye football fan. He also enjoyed fishing in Northern Minnesota and Ontario, Canada, and woodworking.

Mike was a member of the Fertile Lutheran Church and later the Pilot Knob Lutheran Church, Fertile Consolidated School Board of Education, board of the Fertile Creamery, and the Fertile Lions Club. He also was the Cerro Gordo County Weed Commissioner for several years.

Mike is survived by his four children: Deanna Jordan and her husband, Raymond, Fertile, Harold Wolfe, Clear Lake, Robert Wolfe and his wife, Sandra, Clear Lake, and Linda Nuehring and her  husband, Lowell, Clear Lake; fourteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth; son, Bernard; brothers, Marvin and Kenneth; and sisters, Greta Hansler, Maxine Otis, and Marian Waller.

Donald R. Sunne


FERTILE — Donald R. Sunne, age 78, of Fertile, died Friday (Aug. 5, 2005) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Pilot Knob Lutheran Church in rural Forest City with the Rev. Bob Snitzer  officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Peace Lutheran Cemetery in Menomonie, Wis.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 North Clark Street in Forest City and an hour prior to service at the church on Monday.

Donald R. Sunne was born in Wakesha, Wis., on May 26, 1927, the son of Oscar and Hazel (Copp) Sunne. He grew up in Eau Claire, Wis. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Philippine Islands.

On May 28, 1949, he married Ruth Irvine at Peace Lutheran Church in Menomonie, Wis. Four children were born to this union.

Don worked in plumbing sales. In 1961, the family moved to Fertile. Don retired from Wolverine Brass in 1998.

Don's faith was an important part of his life. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Eau Claire and taught Sunday school and served on church councils throughout his adult life.

He also served on the Board of Regents of Waldorf College in Forest City for 12 years.

The Christian legacy he left is treasured by his family and friends and his sense of humor will never be forgotten.

Don is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Fertile; three daughters, Susan (Roger) Ouverson of Vinton, Julia (Edward) Olson of Joice, and Mary (Dennis) Lee of Zumbrota, Minn.; one son, David (Julie) Sunne of Dundee; and a sister, Doris (James) Anderson of Laguna Vista, Texas. He will also be missed by his 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Melvin Oien.

Although the family grieves his loss, we rejoice in knowing that Don is in the loving arms of his Heavenly Father.

MASON CITY — Norma Jean (Johnson) Kirchgatter, 45, of 1114 16th St. N.E., Mason City, died Friday (Aug. 5, 2005) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Thomas Healey officiating.

Norma was born in Iowa City, daughter of Norman L. and Sandra J. (Rasmuson) Johnson. She was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

She attended school in Clear Lake. She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and abroad.

Norma married Tom Kirchgatter on May 27, 1994, in Mason City.

Norma has been battling cancer for the last ten years and was a fighter right up until the end. Norma was always smiling and had a positive attitude. Norma enjoyed cooking, flowers and her cat.

Norma is survived by a husband, Tom Kirchgatter, Mason City, and two children: a daughter, Mindy, (Jason) Floyd, Mary Esther, Fla., and a son, Lucas Kirchgatter, Mason City; a brother, Allen Norman Johnson; and a sister, Sheral (Dennis) Abbott; a nephew, Zachary Abbott, and a niece, Alicia Abbott, all of Clear Lake, along with aunts and uncles.

Norma was proceeded in death by her parents; and a son, Luther.

Judy was born Jan. 16, 1942, in Mason City; she is the daughter of Howard and Lela (Woodhouse) Leonard. Judy graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1960. Judy worked at the Cerro Gordo Humane Society, Memorial Park Cemetery, and Mason City Animal Shelter.

She was united in marriage to Roger L. Vosburgh on July 4, 1993, in Mason City. Judy enjoyed riding along with Roger, who was a truck driver, on his many road trips.

Judy loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and friends. She had a great passion for animals. She was a caretaker to many pets throughout her life and took pride in finding good homes for animals. She was a past member of the State Federation of Humane Societies. Judy was also an avid NASCAR fan.

She is survived by her two children: Mike Momyer, Mason City, and Sandy (Momyer) King and her husband, Dion, Mason City; four grandchildren: Chris Kirschbaum, and his mother, Kim Kirschbaum, Rockwell, Wesley, Taylor, and Jennifer King, Mason City; one brother, Dave Leonard and his wife, Toni, Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY — Vendel L. "Bud" Dority, 80, of 431 24th St. S.W., died Friday (Aug. 5, 2005) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Bud moved to Mason City in 1954. He managed Clean Towel Industrial Service here in Mason City for over 30 years. He retired in 1981. Bud was a member of the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and along with wife, Lavonne, wintered in Florida for 17 years.

BRISTOW — Naomi Louise McGeachy, 82, of Bristow, Iowa, passed away Saturday (Aug. 6, 2005) at the Dumont Wellness Center in Dumont.

Naomi was born Sept. 6, 1922, in Xenia, Illinois, to Glen and Stella Gibson. She was baptized and became a member of the McCabe Chapel in rural Flora, Illinois. Naomi attended Florena Grade School and Flora High School in Flora, Illinois.

At the age of 14, she moved with her family to De Kalb, Illinois. She was united in marriage to Darrell Edward McGeachy April 17, 1942, in Stanwood, Iowa. The couple made their home in Cedar Rapids. They later moved to Hampton in 1945. To this union a son, Dennis Edward, was born Nov. 21, 1945, in Hampton.

Naomi was a Bristow City Council member for 15 years. She was an accomplished seamstress and operated an upholstery business for 14 years. She also worked at Turner Microphone in Cedar Rapids and Maytag Company in Hampton. She loved working in the fields helping her husband farm.

She is survived by her grandson, Jeffrey Scott McGeachy of Las Vegas, Nevada; great-grandson, Connor Scott McGeachy of Las Vegas, Nevada; and her sister, Mary Pantilla of De Kalb, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Glen and Stella; husband, Darrell, and son, Dennis.

MANLY — Eleanor Louise Benjegerdes, 78, Manly, died Sunday (Aug. 7, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Eleanor Louise Benjegerdes was born on Dec. 12, 1926, in Bedford, the daughter of Harry and Mattie (Wilson) Bordner. She received her elementary education in the Bedford Community School, and graduated from Clarinda High School.

She was united in marriage to Leonard Crawford on Dec. 19, 1943, and to this union two children were born: Lynn Pattee and Steve Crawford.

She was united in marriage to Leslie Emil Benjegerdes on July 25, 1981, in Riceville. He preceded her in death on April 18, 2001.

Eleanor worked for several years as a secretary for the Riceville High School and also for the Mt. Ayr High School, and was very active in the Iowa Association of Educational Office Personnel.

Eleanor and Leslie resided in Riceville, Charles City and in 1990, moved to Manly.

She enjoyed being an avid seamstress and quilter, trout fishing, baking, and playing cards, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren.

She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, Christian Home Builders, and Entres Nous Circle all in Manly, and also was a member of the Mason City Quilting Guild and the Shell Rock Dinner Club.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Lynn Pattee and her husband, Bob, of Humboldt, and Steve Crawford and his wife, Joyce, of Charles City; three step-children, Sandra Miles and her husband, Pete, of Fargo, N.D., Leon Benjegerdes and his wife, Betty, of Manly, and Denis Benjegerdes and his wife, Candy, of Manly; four grandchildren, Andrew Pattee and his wife, Allison, Angela Pattee, and Aaron and Emily Crawford; seven step-grandchildren, Maria Miles, Sabra Low, Karla Haley and her husband, Tim, Troy Benjegerdes, Cheri Aldrich and her husband, Lance, Joy Garnass and her husband, Erik, and Dan Benjegerdes; two great-grandchildren, Jake and Luke Stockdale; five step-great-grandchildren, Andy Haley, Ian Low, Nicholas Butze, Dante Benjegerdes, and Anton Benjegerdes; three sisters-in-law, Florence Benjegerdes, of Mason City, Irene Gorkowski, of Toledo, Ohio, and Evelyn Heagel of Manly; a niece, Donna Stewart; and a nephew, Charles Gorton; as well as other relatives and many friends.

MASON CITY — Allen Myklestad, 85, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Saturday (Aug. 6, 2005) at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

Allen Myklestad was born on May 14, 1920, on a farm near Emmons, Minn., the son of Lars Meyer and Velma (McDowell) Myklestad. He attended rural grade school in the area and graduated from Forest City High School in 1937. Allen was inducted into the Army-Air Corps on Feb. 6, 1943, at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., and served in the Burma Theater area with the 51st Flight Control Squadron until his honorable discharge on Dec. 14, 1946, at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas as a staff sergeant.

He was united in marriage to Frances A. Quam Eckert on Feb. 6, 1947, in the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Throughout his life Allen was employed as a carpenter and cement finisher in Mason City and the North Iowa area. He loved his work and helped build hundreds of homes until his retirement in the spring of 1980.

Allen loved to be outdoors, but his great love and enjoyment was his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and spending time with them.

Allen was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, and had been a lifelong member of the church.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Frances Myklestad, of Mason City; his children, Roger Myklestad and his wife, Elizabeth, of Ottertail, Minn., Karen Brockett and her husband, John, of Plano, Texas, Jim Myklestad and his wife, Mary, of Mason City, and Linda Myklestad of Fort Collins, Colo.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Melvin Myklestad, of Garner; and a sister, Gladys Baker, of Clear Lake; as well as other relatives and many friends.

STACYVILLE — Gertrude Mauer, 94, of Stacyville, died Monday (Aug. 8, 2005) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Gertrude was born Aug. 7, 1911, in Cohasset, Minn., the daughter of William and Sophia (Miller) Wolf. She moved to Osage, Iowa, when she was a child.

Gertrude married Raymond Mauer on Feb. 4, 1937, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville. She taught in rural school for a year before her marriage to Raymond. They lived and farmed outside of Stacyville for 28 years. Gertrude moved to Stacyville in 1965. She worked at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home. Gertrude was a member of Visitation Catholic Church and Christian Mothers.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be in the Visitation Cemetery in Stacyville.

Harlan was born on March 5, 1939, in Mower County, Minn. He was the oldest of three boys born to John and Ena (Nagle) Bell. Harlan graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1958. He then attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls receiving his bachelor's degree in 1963. He went on to receive his master of arts degree at the University of Iowa in 1971.

During his teaching career he taught at the Vinton School for the Blind, Vinton Public School, Charter Oak-Ute, and Blakesburg. He was a principal in Urbana and professor at Council Bluffs Junior College. He finished his teaching career in Traer, Iowa where he retired in 2001.

Harlan was a member of the Vinton Masonic Lodge No. 62 and the secretary for the Black Hawk Lodge No. 65. He also served as the treasurer of the El Kahir Shine Unit No. 101.

He loved to travel and spent many of his trips visiting family and friends.

Harlan was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ena Bell; and his brother, Russell Bell.

He is survived by his brother, Jim (Nancy) Bell; sister-in-law, Sandy Bell; five nieces, Gail (Steve) Smith, Renae Wason, Susan (Dave) Pearl, Dawn (Chris) Standing, and Karen (Chad) Smith; and one nephew, Dean (Becky) Bell.

MASON CITY — Phyllis A. Wilhite, died Saturday (Aug. 7, 2005) at The Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Phyllis A. Wilhite was born Jan. 13, 1925, in Klemme, the daughter of Levi and Ester Klotzbach. Phyllis lived in Iowa all of her life. She was a member of the Moose Lodge. She was an avid bowler and bingo player. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Doug Braner, of Orlando, Fla., David Braner, of Polk City, Lonna Knutson, of Thornton, LaVonn Dirks, of Belmond, Lori Jacober, of Wasilla, Alaska, and Jayne Bitker, of Clear Lake; and eight grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by two grandchildren, Terry Knutson and Dusty Palmer.

MASON CITY — Orville L. Klipping, 86, of 2244 23rd St. S.W. died Tuesday (Aug. 9, 2005) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

Orville L. Klipping was born Jan. 5, 1919, in Forest City, the son of Leonard and Edna (Jacobson) Klipping. He attended country school in Forest City. He worked on a farm in the Britt area, and then went to work for the railroad in Oklahoma. Orville hauled cattle for Sanke Truck Company in Britt. He started working in 1954 for Lehigh Cement Plant and retired in 1983.

Orville loved tools, working on motors, fishing, hunting and gardening. His greatest love was spending time with his family, especially his nieces and nephews.

Orville is survived by his siblings, Mary Church of Forest City, Pearl Eliason of Waterloo, Geroldine Andries of Altoona, Marvin (Rita) Klipping of Britt and Joanne (Melvin) Symes of Mason City; along with several nieces and nephews.

Orville is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Raymond Klipping, Helen Hill, Beatrice Horecka, Robert Klipping, James Klipping, Richard Klipping and Donald Klipping; one niece and three nephews.

Vern E. Nelson


SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. — Vern E. Nelson, 86, of San Clemente, Calif., passed away Tuesday evening (July 26, 2005) at his home.

In spite of surviving quadruple heart surgery in 1997, he succumbed quickly to mesothelioma cancer.

Vern was a retired chief electrician at the American Crystal Sugar Company in Mason City.

Vern was an electricianist First Class in the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II from 1942 to 1945. He also served in the Navy Reserves for four years in Seattle, Wash.

He was also an excellent handyman, a great planner, and had been a strong leader in the church, as well as in many other areas of his life.

He was born and raised in Lake Mills and lived in Mason City for 40 years. He and his wife, Marie, moved to San Clemente, Calif., in 1996 to be close to their daughters, Rachel Grina, Melinda Masson, Valerie Lamb and Patricia Nelson.

He is survived by his wife, daughters, son-in-law, Maurice Masson, and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, John, in 1988.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at the San Clemente Presbyterian Chapel, 119 N. Ave de la Estrella, San Clemente, Calif. Burial will be by Naval military protocol at Fort Rosecrans in Point Loma, Calif.

BELMOND — Doris Jean Walrod, 78, of Belmond passed away Sunday (Aug. 7, 2005) at Methodist Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn.

Doris "Jean" (Ryan) Walrod was born Sept. 18, 1926, in Rockwell City, to James and Minnie (Ehler) Ryan. She lived on farms near Rockwell City, Dows and Rowan. She grew up in a large family (five brothers, four sisters — sandwiched between two sets of twins). In 1944, she graduated from Rowan High School. After graduation, she worked as a teletype operator for Western Union in Chicago, Ill.

In 1946, she met William (Bill) Walrod. After a four-month courtship, they were married on Jan. 15, 1947. To this union three children were born: Ricky William, Veloice Sue and Todd Elliot.

Jean enjoyed the role of homemaker and mother. She worked for 12 years in the medical records department at the Belmond Community Hospital. Along with Bill, she attended frequent school events as their children grew up. Jean loved to travel with her family and there were many camping trips ranging from weekend jaunts nearby or longer trips up North or out West.

Jean was always a willing volunteer. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, serving at various times on the Administrative Council, Trustees and Staff Parish. She also served faithfully in the United Methodist Women and Rebecca Circle. She had been a member of the Progress Club since 1967. She also had worked in the bereavement program for Wright County Hospice. Jean also was active in the Democratic Party, volunteering many hours for various candidates over the years.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; son, Ricky; her parents; four brothers: Harold, Walter, Glen and Daryl; and two sisters: Alice Slatkoske and Ethel Korth. After Bill's death, Jean wrote: "I believe I have always loved the perfect mate. … I know the true love of my life. Life has to end, but love does not. … I truly believe we will meet again."

Jean is survived by daughter, Veloice Huck and her husband, Peter, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; son, Todd and his wife, Ann, of Leland, Iowa; grandchildren, Megan (Mike) Adams of Burnsville, Minn., Emily (Karlin) Bilchuk of Princeton, N.J.; Kayla Huck, Trent and Jane Walrod; brother, Ed (Marge) Ryan of Kanawha; sisters, Elsie (Wilbur) Rockow-Schroeder of Dows, and Darlene Aldrich of Belmond; sisters-in-law, Melba Ryan, Vernie Ryan; and many nieces and nephews.
