HTC Daniel F.Ballard, USN (Ret.)


GREENE — A funeral Mass for Daniel F. Ballard, 58, of 320 South Main Street, Greene, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene with the Rev. Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating.

Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Greene with military honors conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 North First Street, Greene, where there will be a rosary service at 5 p.m. conducted by the Knights of Columbus followed by a scriptural wake service.

Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services on Tuesday.

Daniel Fredrick Ballard was born July 7, 1947, at the Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City, a son of Earnie Fredrick and Veronica Florence (Heck) Ballard, and died Thursday (July 28, 2005) at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

He received his education and graduated from the Immaculate Conception School in Charles City in 1966. He attended North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City where he met Brenda Marsh. Dan entered the United States Navy in July 1968 when he underwent training at Great Lakes Naval Station.

On May 2, 1970, Dan and Brenda were united in marriage at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene. They relocated to Portsmouth, Va., where he was stationed on the USS Columbus CG-12. He later served on the USS John F. Kennedy CVA-67, USS Francis Marion LPA-249, USS Yellowstone AD-41, and USS Vulcan AR-5.

At various times he served with the SIMA (Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity), and shore patrol. Following his retirement on October 31, 1988, he and his family returned to Greene in 1991 where they made their home.

He was currently employed at Menards in Mason City. He was an active member of the Greene Volunteer Fire Department where he was a certified fire inspector, fire fighter I, haz-mat ops level, and weather spotter.

Daniel was also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Greene, Father John Naumann Council of the Knights of Columbus, and Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

He will be sadly missed by his wife Brenda of Greene; two daughters: Michele (James) Anderson of Greene, Kendra (Douglas) Mennen of Mason City; five and a half grandchildren: Elizabeth, Thomas Daniel, Heather, Nick, Ben, and a baby due in the fall; and a special family friend, Ellen Ragland; his mother, Veronica "Ronnie" Ballard of Floyd; three sisters: Barb (John) Pint of Mitchell, Bonnie (Larry) Pint of Osage, Linda (Dave) Hennagir of Griffith, Ind. and many nieces and nephews.

Dan was preceded in death by his father Earnie Ballard on October 11, 1973; and an infant grandchild in 2002. Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Daniel F. Ballard Memorial Fund for community projects in care of the family.

Agnes M. Kumsher


BRITT — Agnes M. Kumsher, 85, of Britt, passed away Saturday (July 30, 2005) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services for Agnes Kumsher will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will take place in St. Patrick's Church Cemetery in Britt.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel in Britt and one hour prior to the services at the church. A parish rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

Agnes, the daughter of Adolph and Mary Nedved Ptacek was born June 24, 1920, on a farm south of Duncan. She received her education and graduated from the rural schools. As a young girl she helped friends and relatives with housework and child-sitting.

Agnes was united in marriage with Michael Kumsher on Nov. 22, 1938, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. The couple made their home on the family farm east of Britt until 1997 when they moved into Britt.

She enjoyed gardening, quilting, embroidery and baking kolaches, breads and pies. She was a generous and loving fulltime wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family was her life.

Agnes was baptized at St. Wenceslaus in Duncan. She attended and was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt.

Knowing she is at peace with the Lord and mourning her loss are her husband, Michael, of 66 years; one son, Ronald Kumsher and his wife, Carolyn, of Garner; six daughters: Charlene Aukes and her husband, Denny, of Forest City, Jeraldine Peterson and her husband, Larry, of Corwith, Carolyn DeKruif and her husband, Don, of Britt, Darlene Francis and Tim Lyman of Faribault, Minn.; Judy Thompson and her husband, Jerry, of Crystal Lake and Marilyn Kumsher at home; fifteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; four sisters: Mary Kral of Blair, Wis., Sally Weiskamp of Britt, Marge Schleusner and her husband, Bud, of Garner, Frances Doughan and her husband, Allan, of Britt; brother, Clarence Ptacek and his wife, Verneil, of Garner; brother-in-law, Bob Witte (who passed away on July 31, 2005) of Duncan and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Blanche Witte; brother, Tony Ptacek; sister-in-law, Ileene Ptacek; and two brothers-in-law: Jim Kral and Art Weiskamp.

HAMPTON— Richard T. Nelson, 70, of Hampton, died Sunday (July 31, 2005) at the Sheffield Care Center, Sheffield.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton with the Rev. Karl Bollhagen and Vicar Jonathan Mumme presiding.

Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

NORA SPRINGS — Iris M. LaCoste, 72, formerly of 907 West Congress, Rudd, died Saturday (July 30, 2005) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Holy Name Catholic Church, 507 First Ave. N.W., Rockford, with the Rev. Jon M. Seda officiating.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Sheckler Colonial Chapel 114 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs.

Memorials may be directed to the Iris M. LaCoste Memorial Fund.

Iris M. LaCoste was born on Oct. 2, 1932, in Wall, S. D., the daughter of Bernard and Hildred (Schmitten) Thompson.

Iris graduated from Rudd High School in 1950. She was united in marriage to Raymond LaCoste on June 14, 1950, at the Holy Name Catholic Church. To this union, nine children were born. Iris was an employee of Risto and Ron Weber and Associates.

Iris loved cooking, baking, and reading. Her greatest love was spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church, Sara Circle, canasta and 500 club.

Iris is survived by her children, Diana Mentzer, of Omaha, Neb., Alan (Sharon) LaCoste, of Rudd, Karen (Rod) Garrity, of Viola, Wis., Theresa Schwem, of Ventura, Barb (Kelly) Noss, of Dougherty, Gail (Dan) Krull, of Rockford, and Laura (Steve) Hunt, of Bristol, Wis., 22 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

Iris is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond; children, David and Michael LaCoste; son-in law, Marvin Mentzer; two grandsons, Derek Spanjer and Brad LaCoste; and one sister, Catherine Peters.

CLEAR LAKE — Della A. Agnew, 91, of 400 Highway 18 W., Clear Lake, died Sunday (July 31, 2005) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

GREENE — Funeral services for Zachary D. Hildebrand, 21, of 413 North Second Street, Greene, w ill be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church of Greene, with Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Private burial services will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery. Greene.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene where there will be a public Scripture Service and time of remembrance at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services on Thursday.

Zachary Dale Hildebrand was born Nov. 28, 1983, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, a son of Dale Lyle and Vickie Sue (Schipper) Hildebrand, and died Friday (July 29, 2005) in Allison.

He was baptized and confirmed a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greene where he helped teach Sunday school. Zachary received his education in the Greene and Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock Community School Districts. He was also involved in the Greene Area Teen Betterment Council, and Rice Tae Kwon Do in Charles City for eleven years, where he was awarded First Grade Recommend Red Belt.

Zachary was employed at APAC customer services in Mason City and Waterloo. He also worked for Casey's General Store in Mason City and Bennigan's and Best Western Hotel of Clear Lake.

He is survived by his mother, Vickie (Jeff Winters) Hildebrand; father, Dale (Jane) Hildebrand of Waterloo; his brother, Tanner of Greene; maternal grandmother, Janet Schipper of Greene; paternal grandparents, Edward and Millie Hildebrand of Waterloo.

Zachary was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Harm Schipper.

ALDEN — Merle N. Wilkie, 82, of Alden, died Saturday, (July 30, 2005) at his home.

A memorial service for Merle Wilkie will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls, Iowa, with the Rev. Don Preston officiating.

Inurnment will be at the Alden Township Cemetery, Alden, Iowa.

There will be a time of fellowship and visitation following the service.

Military honors will be conducted by Hyman-Peavey American Legion Post No. 188, Iowa Falls.

Robert J. Witte

BRITT — Robert J. Witte, 86, of Duncan, passed away Sunday (July 31, 2005) at his home.

Funeral services for Robert Witte will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with Father Michael Schueller officiating.

Burial will take place in St. John's Cemetery in Duncan. Military graveside services are under the direction of the Britt Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel in Britt and one hour prior to the services at the church. A Knight's of Columbus rosary will be held at 8 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Robert John Witte, the son of John and Josephine Arndorfer Witte, was born Oct. 31, 1918, in Chicago, Ill. He attended St. Benedict Catholic School In St. Benedict, Iowa.

In 1942, Robert enlisted in the Army and served with the 1st Ranger BN-44 as a radio dispatcher. He was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries received and honorably discharged in October of 1945.

On Feb. 25, 1946, Robert was united in marriage with Blanche Ptacek. The couple farmed in the Britt/Garner area where they raised their family. He was also in the construction business. Following retirement, Robert moved to Duncan where he continued to be active in woodworking.

Robert was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan, the Knights of Columbus, the VFW and American Legion.

He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and spending time with his family.

Robert is survived by nine children: Jean Young of Garner, Donna Weckwerth and her husband, Dennis, of Wells, Minn., Daryl Witte and his wife, Penny of Manly, Jane Risius and her husband, Todd, of Russellville, Ark., Steve Witte and his wife, Donna, of Britt, Dorene Larsen of Fairmont, Minn., Dennis Witte and his wife, Anita, of Webster City, Nancy Wilson and her husband, David, of Britt, and James Witte of Zanesville, Ohio; 29 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Blanche.

McINTIRE — Ricky Lee Ring, 46, of McIntire, Iowa, died Sunday (July 31, 2005) at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn., after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville, with the Rev. Michael Parris officiating. Burial will be in the St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery in rural Riceville.

IOWA FALLS — Michael Fischer, 84, of Iowa Falls, died Sunday (July 31, 2005) at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Iowa Falls, with Father Jim Dubert officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Mark's Cemetery, Iowa Falls.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Linn's Funeral Homes Iowa Falls Chapel, with the family present to receive friends between the hours of 5 and 7 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service and Rosary following the visitation.

CLEAR LAKE — Della A. Agnew, 91, Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake, died Sunday (July 31, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Della was born July 5, 1914, at Latimer, the daughter of Chris B. and Minnie (Riis) Johansen. She attended Latimer schools graduating from Latimer High School in 1931. She attended Dana College in Blair, Neb.

 Della worked at the Latimer State Bank for 10 years.

She married John Agnew Jan. 24, 1945, in Coulter. John and Della farmed in the Coulter area until they retired and moved to Clear Lake in the spring of 1979.

John and Della loved to dance, especially square dancing. She loved playing the piano, baking and cooking. She was a member of Galilean Lutheran Church.

Della is survived by her sister, Dorothy Thomsen, Clear Lake; sisters-in-law, Vera Johansen, Northfield, Minn., and Neva Johansen, Latimer; brother-in-law, Richard Azeltine, Chatsworth, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Della was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John on April 3, 2003; and two brothers, Lewis and Earl Johansen.

Charles James LaFrance


MANLY — Charles James LaFrance, 68, of 826 N. Grant St., Manly died late Saturday afternoon (July 30, 2005) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Frederick Gillespie and the Rev. Walter Jones officiating.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home.

Alma L. Little


KINGSTON, Tenn. — Alma L. Little, 99, of Kingston, Tenn., passed away Sunday (July 31, 2005) at Harriman Care and Rehabilitation.

Formerly of Mason City, Iowa, she and her husband had owned their own business, and she moved to Kingston after his death.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Spiritual Frontiers for 27 years, National Covenant of State Gardens Orchids and was a life member and judge of North Central Genealogy, Pioneer Museum, Friends of the Library, Nature Club, former member of H.E.O. and Minerals Club, Volunteer of Hospice, W.S.C.S. (Methodist) and longtime member of the Camera Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Little; four brothers and one sister.

She is survived by two sisters, Betty Jean Hine and husband, Robert, of Kingston, Tenn., and Lola Katona and husband, John, of Yucaipa, Calif.

In accordance with Mrs. Little's wishes, the body will be cremated and interment will be in Burr Oak Cemetery in Decorah.

Leonard ‘Lenny' H. Johnson


ALBERT LEA, Minn. — The funeral service for Leonard H. Johnson of Albert Lea, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Ascension Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Clark Cary officiating. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Bonnerup Funeral Service in Albert Lea, and one hour before the service at the church.

Leonard died on Sunday evening (July 31, 2005) at St. John's Lutheran Home at the age of 81.

He was born on Dec. 21, 1923, in Northwood, Iowa, the son of John and Anna (Turvold) Johnson.

He graduated from Northwood High School. Following graduation, he began farming on the family farm west of Northwood.

On July 20, 1946, he married Betty Schreiber in Albert Lea.

In addition to farming he had also began working at Wilson & Co. He later moved into Albert Lea and continued working at Farmstead, retiring after 22 years.

He was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church.

Leonard enjoyed playing golf, and helped with organization of the Senior League at Green Lea Golf Course.

He was a member of the Wednesday Morning Kiwanis, he also was a volunteer at the Albert Lea Medical Center.

He is survived by the wife of 59 years, Betty, of Albert Lea; two daughters, Dianne and her husband Larry Jacobson of Albert Lea, and Jodi and her husband Rick Mershon of Fort Worth, Texas; son-in-law, Barry Bendickson of Forest City; grandchildren: Chad Jacobson of Emmetsburg, Cara and her husband Rob Liddle of Prior Lake, Minn., Brooke Jacobson of Albert Lea, Tori and her husband Ryan Eastvold of Clear Lake, and Jack Mershon of Fort Worth, Texas; two great-granddaughters, Megan and Brynn Liddle of Prior Lake, Minn.; two brothers, Alton Johnson of Clear Lake, and Kenneth Johnson and his wife Olga of Albert Lea; sister, Nina and her husband Paul Emmons of Wisconsin; sisters-in-law Helen and her husband, Emil Lykken, Ruth Schreiber, and Joyce Schreiber all of Albert Lea; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Richard Mershon; daughter Patty Bendickson; and brother Orville Johnson.

Gladys A. Schachterle

NORTHWOOD — Gladys A. Schachterle, 81, of 304 13th St. S., Northwood, died Monday (Aug. 1, 2005) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, 309 N. Ninth St., Northwood, with the Rev. Wayne Hagen officiating. Interment will be at the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood.

The family suggests memorials be sent to the American Cancer Society.

Gladys Alvina Schachterle was born June 15, 1924, in Jackson, Minn., the daughter of George and Carrie (Speckman) Koeder. She received her education from the Ackley High School. Upon completing her education, Gladys helped her family with their bakery in Ackley.

She was united in marriage to Robert Schachterle on Oct. 15, 1944, in the Little Brown Church in Nashua. After Robert was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy, Gladys and Robert began working for the Koeder Resorts in Blackduck, Minn., in the spring and summer, and in the winter they worked at the Ackley Bakery, until moving to Northwood in 1949. In 1949, they purchased the Northwood Bakery, which they operated for 33 years until their retirement in 1982.

Gladys enjoyed playing cards and was involved with several card clubs, including her "Friday Gang" for cards every Friday and every other Tuesday she played bridge with a group of ladies.

Gladys had a passion for gardening, cooking and flowers. She also participated in the Northwood Bowling League, which she bowled for the Northwood Bakery. Gladys looked forward to wintering in Texas, which she has done since her retirement, and spending time with her family and friends.

Gladys was a member of the First Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Lydia Circle for many years, and the Northwood Women's Auxiliary VFW.

Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Michael Schachterle and his wife, Crystal, Chanhassen, Minn.; and Dennis Schachterle, Lake Mills; a granddaughter, Tanya Reader and her husband, Dr. Nathan, Bloomington, Minn.; two great-grandsons, Michael and Erick Reader; two brothers-in-law, Fredrick Schachterle and his wife, Phyllis, Ackley; and William Schachterle and his wife, Donna, Geneva; and a sister-in-law, Emily Schachterle, Oscoda, Mich.

MASON CITY — Charles James LaFrance, 68, of 826 N. Grant St., Manly, died late Saturday afternoon (July 30, 2005) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Charles James LaFrance was born Aug. 14, 1936, to Lenard and Anita (Riley) LaFrance in Fort Dodge, where he grew up and graduated from school. In 1955, Charles moved to Manly, where he resided for 50 years.

He served in the U.S. Army in peace time between the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict from Nov. 25, 1958, and was honorably discharged on Oct. 31, 1964.

Charles married Carolyn J. Rhem. He was employed in transportation with Central States Auto Auction in Mason City for over 30 years. Charles had also worked for Armour from 1994 through 2004 in Mason City. Charles loved cars, shooting pool, playing cards, traveling and spending time with his family.

Charles is survived by three sisters, Nora Ross, Lillie Woolery and Roberta "PeeWee" Terrell; his three children, Robin, RoxAne and Latonya; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, friends and other family members.

Charles was preceded in death by a brother, Rudy LaFrance; parents, Anita and Lenard LaFrance; and one sister, Debouris "Dee" McCaleb.

GARNER — Ruby E. Hoyt, 92, of rural Garner passed away Monday (Aug. 1, 2005) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with Richard Scott, lay assistant, of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in the Concord Cemetery, Garner.

Ruby Eva Hoyt was born July 4, 1913, in rural Goodell, Hancock County, to Charles and Amanda (Willer) Halfpop. Ruby graduated from Goodell High School in 1931.

She was united in marriage to Emmett D. Hoyt on July 3, 1934, at Britt. They had two children. They were members of Zion Lutheran Church.

Ruby and Emmett farmed together all of their married life, living on the same farm since 1946. She took an active part in the farming and after retirement in 1978 continued to live on the farm.

Even after retirement she would help out with chores, etc., until she was no longer able. They enjoyed spending summers in Minnesota on fishing trips.

Ruby was a quilt maker, making quilts for all of her grandchildren. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. One of her quilts won a purple ribbon at the North Iowa Fair.

Ruby enjoyed cooking and read cookbooks instead of novels. She was always trying out new recipes. You couldn't enter her kitchen without being fed. She continued to feed the "Farmhands" until age 90 when she broke her hip.

She loved her family and cherished Christmas when they were all together.

She will be missed by her family and friends. Son, Robert and wife, Pat, Garner; and daughter, Dixie Boehnke, Clear Lake; grandchildren Twyla Coe and fiancé David Schrader, Melody Coe, and Suzanne Copas and husband Tim; great-grandchildren Joshua Coe, Amanda Johnson, husband, Troy, and children Alexis, Cade and Coy; Sandra Coe and children Brenna and Jackson; Sarah Myers, husband Eric and son Jacob and Krystal Copas; sister Gladys McNutt of Fargo, N.D.; dear friend and roommate Eloise Prescott; and many nieces and nephews.

VALLEY CENTER, Calif. — Selma G. Holtz, 98, died Sunday, April 10, 2005, in Escondido, Calif.

Born Sept. 18, 1906, in Rudd, Iowa, she lived in Valley Center for nine years. She was a country school teacher and a Dr. Shaklee distributor. She was a Welcome Wagon Hostess.

Ms. Holtz was preceded in death by her brothers, Stanley and Homer; and sisters, Iola and Edna.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Cecil and Madonna Holtz, of Elgin, Ill.; daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Bob Carroll of Valley Center, and Maryellen and Jim Fogelquist/Coffey of Portland, Ore.; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchilden; and one great-great-granddaughter.

BRITT — Blanche (Kopacek) Paca, 90, of Britt passed away Tuesday (Aug. 2, 2005) at Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral service for Blanche Paca will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with Father Michael Schueller officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Duncan.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel, 178 Center St. West in Britt, with a 7:30 p.m. Catholic Workman rosary. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Blanche was born to Frank and Elizabeth (Kudej) Kopacek on Sept. 20, 1914, on a farm outside of Britt, Iowa. She married William Paca on Nov. 21, 1933. They farmed near Duncan until 1974, when they moved to Garner. William died in 1981. In 1995, Blanche became a resident of Westview Care Center in Britt when the effects of Alzheimer's diminished her recognition and memories of her dear friends and the family that she loved.

Blanche enjoyed baking, bowling, gardening, playing cards and making quilts for her grandchildren. Her greatest joy came from her family, especially her grandbabies and great-grandbabies.

On Aug. 2, 2005, Blanche returned to Jesus and was greeted by her husband, Bill; daughter, Catherine; son-in-law, Monte Hiscocks; two great-granddaughters; her parents; three brothers: Francis, Arnold, and Raymond; and four sisters: Helen, Evelyn, Mildred and Lillian.

She will be missed by her daughters: Marjorie (Ron) Hanson of Britt, Iowa, Irene (Jan) Raber of Kanawha, Iowa, Rita (Ralph) Haan of Eden Valley, Minn., and Rebecca (Paul) McCormick of Rollingstone, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters: Marie Brcka of Britt, Vivian Formanek of Britt, and Agnes Rayhons  of Britt; one brother, Vincent Kopacek of Britt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joe worked for the railroad, was a union supporter, had a business in Spirit Lake, and served in World War I. Mary worked as a teller at the Manly Bank from 1921-1931.

John Reiners


YUCCA VALLEY, Calif. — John Reiners Jr., 74, of Yucca Valley, Calif., died June 27, 2005 at his home.

Born Aug. 1, 1930, near Lennox, S.D., he was the son of John and Annie Stoffers Reiners. He married Florence Martin on Dec. 27, 1959, in Rushmore. He married Mardijean Brandt on May 31, 1985.

He graduated from Lennox High School in 1948, from the University of Dubuque in 1953, seminary in 1956, and from the University of Nebraska School of Social Work. He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church of Lennox on Sept. 30, 1956.

He served the Eastfriesland Presbyterian Church, Rushmore, for six years and the First Presbyterian Church, Lakota, for six years. He worked for Lutheran Social Services in Mason City for 10 1/2 years. He later worked for three years at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Palo Alto, Calif., for the U.S. Army in Germany, and then in 29 Palms, Calif., until his retirement in 2003. He spent 36 years in the military in the National Guard and Army Reserves.

Surviving are his wife; four sons: Paul Reiners, Rochester, Timothy (Lynn) Reiners, Plymouth, Eric (Kerri) Reiners, Culver City, and Steven Panganiban, Nashville, Tenn.; three daughters: Sonja Martin, Winterset, Iowa, Catherine (Justin) King, Sonoma, Calif., and Sheri (Mike) Pape, Gilbert, Ariz.; one brother, Edwin Reiners, Milbank, S.D.; and nine grandchildren.

Services were conducted by Dr. Alvin Straatmeyer at Joshua Springs Calvary Chapel in Yucca Valley, Calif.

PORT ISABEL, Texas — Ramona M. Decker, 60, of Port Isabel, Texas, Lake Jefferson, Minn., and formerly of Mason City, died July 10, 2005, in White Fish, Mont., after a battle with cancer. Inurnment was at Elmwood-     St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Ramona M. Decker was born on Aug. 26, 1944, in Duluth, Minn., daughter of Fern and Lyman Herrick. She graduated high school and business college  in Duluth, Minn. While she was in Duluth, she was the head waitress at the London House Cafe.

She married Jay E. Decker on Feb. 8, 1980. They owned and operated Decker's Sporting Goods Store and Sportsman's Outlet in Mason City. They retired in 1993, and moved to Port Isabel, Texas, and Lake Jefferson, Minn., in the summers.

Ramona enjoyed hunting, fishing, being outdoors and on the lake. She loved to travel. Jay and she traveled to Alaska many times.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Jay Decker, Lake Jefferson, Minn.; three children; two sisters; and one brother.

GARNER — Joseph R. Vogel, 79, of Garner died Wednesday (Aug. 3, 2005)   at the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with the Rev. Jerry Blake officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel with a Scripture service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Joseph Richard Vogel, the son of Joseph Jr. and Maude (Clarahan) Vogel, was born October 6, 1926, at Harper, Iowa. He attended school at St. Elizabeth Catholic School at Harper and worked on the family farm.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 2nd Armored Division in England, France and Germany. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to Harper.

On Jan. 21, 1948, he married Marie M. Webb at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper. They farmed near Harper until 1958, when they moved to Garner. Joe worked at the Garner Creamery, Woodford Wheeler in Britt and for 19½ years as custodian at the Garner-Hayfield High School, retiring in 1992.

He truly loved working at the school, visiting with the kids and going to the "Penthouse" with Marv for breaks.

On March 21, 2005, he entered the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He enjoyed his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, the New York Yankees, Dallas Cowboys and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and the Garner VFW and American Legion.

Joe is survived by his three children, Jim (Kathy) Vogel of League City, Texas, John (Lee Ann) Vogel of League City, Texas and Bonnie (Bob) Butin of Garner; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Fisher and Marie Oliver, both of Keswick; and two brothers, Stanley (Irene) Vogel of Sigourney and Gordon Vogel of Louisville, Ky.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie; twin daughters, Teresa and Mary; parents; infant brother, Joseph Francis; nephew, Danny Vogel; and brothers- in-law, Elvin Fisher and Don Oliver.

PLYMOUTH — Opal Beatrice Roudybush, 90, of Manly, formerly of Plymouth, died Thursday (Aug. 4, 2005) at the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Manly.

Opal was born on March 28, 1915, the daughter of Homer and Fern (Graham) Davis. She attended school in the Davis City area.

She was united in marriage to Lester Roudybush on June 30, 1931, in Pleasanton, Iowa. After their marriage they lived in the Davis City area until moving to Mason City.

Opal enjoyed her flowers and loved to dance. No one ever left Opal's house hungry and she enjoyed cooking and visiting with everyone. But her pride and joy was all of her family.

The void that will be left in the hearts of her family by her passing will be filled with wonderful memories of her. Olive L. Grusy was born June 8, 1913, in Paulding, Ohio, a daughter of William and Lena (Stoller) Grusy, and died Tuesday (Aug. 2, 2005) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

Olive was united in marriage to Roy Henline on Oct. 19, 1941 in Eureka, Ill. In 1944 they moved to Greene where they owned and operated a machine and welding shop for many years.

She was very active in the life of the community, having been a member of Ladies Bowling League and Sportsman's Club. She became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greene on Sept. 27, 1950, and was a member of the Presbyterian Women and Good Cheer Circle.

Ollie enjoyed the outdoors, especially spending time in her garden and canning. She loved cooking and especially enjoyed baking cookies for the neighborhood kids. She and her husband spent many hours fishing on the Shell Rock River.

Ollie had a soft spot for animals, especially cats and dogs. She loved to sing and dance. She was a generous, loving aunt, sister and friend, who showered people with homemade crocheted and ceramic creations. Her memory will live on in our hearts forever.

She is survived by three brothers, Robert and Alf Grusy, both of Eureka, Ill., and William (Hazel) Grusy of Georgetown, Texas; two sisters: Viola (Tom) White of Tampa, Fla., Virginia Jarnagan of Cedar Rapids; one local niece, Marilyn Scholle of Charles City, and many more nieces and nephews. Two especially close friends are Tim and Kathy Gansen of Greene.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Roy, on January 29, 2000, her parents, three brothers and three sisters.
