GEORGENE A. GREEN
MASON CITY — Georgene Ann Green,
70, of Mason City, died Thursday
(October 21, 2004) at Mercy
Medical Center-North Iowa,
surrounded by family and
friends.
A memorial Mass will be held
11:00 A.M. Saturday (October 30,
2004) at Holy Family Catholic
Church, 704 N. Adams, Mason
City, with Rev. Jon M. Seda and
Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka,
officiating. Georgene chose to
donate her remains to medical
research at St. Louis
University.
The family will greet friends
from 4 to 6 P.M. Friday at
Hogan-Bremer-Colonial Chapel,
126 3rd St NE, Mason City, where
an Athenian Study Club/ Catholic
Daughters of America rosary will
be held at 5 P. M. followed by a
scriptural wake service at 5:30
P.M.
The family suggests memorials be
given to Community Kitchen of
North Iowa, 606 N. Monroe, Mason
City, Iowa 50401.
Born April 21, 1934 in Newark,
N.J. to Joseph and Marie Hagmann,
Georgene’s early life revolved
around, appropriately, a
restaurant, which was run by her
parents, and at which she worked
as a young girl. After growing
up in Cortland, N.Y., Mrs. Green
moved to Salina, Kansas
following high school.
A devoted Catholic, Georgene met
a young sergeant from Smoky Hill
Air Force base in Salina after
mass one day. His name was
Gervin Green, and after a brief
courtship that included three
months of international
correspondence while Gervin was
stationed in England, the two
wed on August 4, 1955 at Holy
Family Catholic Church in Mason
City. For 48 years Georgene and
Gervin lived in Mason City,
where Mrs. Green worked at
Northwestern Bell-AT & T while
also raising six children.
Two passions drove Georgene; a
commitment to service and her
love of cooking. She found a way
to combine both of those
passions as she served as a
volunteer for over a decade at
Mason City’s Community Kitchen
as well as a cook for hundreds
of families following funeral
services at Holy Family. In
addition Mrs. Green joined
several local organizations,
including Holy Family Catholic
Church, and St. Elizabeth Seaton
circle at church, the Athenian
Study Club, the Catholic
Daughters of America, and a
Thursday prayer group.
Most of all, Georgene will be
remembered for her dedication to
making others’ lives better,
whether it was by crocheting an
afghan to be auctioned off for
Newman High School, baking bread
to give away to friends and
acquaintances, or making sure
female prisoners were equipped
with thermal under-wear during
the winter.
With her passing, Georgene joins
her parents, sister Barbara, and
son William, who died as an
infant, in heaven.

(Parker) Johnson. She attended
Rock Creek country school for a
time and then Osage schools,
graduating in 1955.
She was united in marriage to
Alfred George McLaughlin, Aug.
8, 1959, at Holy Family Catholic
Church, Mason City. Their union
recently celebrated 45 years and
was blessed by seven children,
Terrance, Lori, Kevin, Angela,
Michelle, Elizabeth and Susan.
Following their marriage, Carol
and Al lived for a time in
Belmond. They spent time living
in Hampton before making their
home in Grinnell. In 1973, they
returned to Alfred’s parents’
farm in rural Belmond, where
they farmed until moving to
their present home in Belmond in
1983.
Throughout her life, Carol had
put the needs of others before
her own. She was a devoted wife
and life partner to Al. Her
passion was her family and
nurturing her children
throughout her life. They will
remember her teaching them her
values, her love of music, and
the importance of education,
something she believed in
strongly, motivating her to
attend business school at
Hamilton College, Mason City,
graduating in 1981. Following
college, Carol was employed by
the State of Iowa Division of
Soil Conservation from
1981-2002.
Carol was a dedicated and loving
mother and grandmother who truly
cherished any opportunity to be
a spectator at any activity they
were involved with in their
lives, whether they were a part
of a sporting event, band, or
chorus concert, or any other
extra-curricular activity, Carol
was there as their No. 1
cheerleader.
Carol looked forward to family
gatherings and re-unions and
opportunities to get together
with her siblings. She and Al
looked forward to taking their
children on annual summer
vacations during their school
years. After the children moved
away, Al and Carol loved to
visit their children’s homes
throughout the country and
state. Family holidays were
often times spent at the
children’s homes and in recent
years Thanksgiving took place in
Colorado. They had taken a
special trip to Hawaii two years
ago which was initiated by their
children. The couple had also
traveled to Salt Lake City,
Utah, for the Olympics and to
Delaware.
Her devotion to her faith was
shown by her membership at
Trinity Lutheran Church,
Belmond, where she had served in
many roles including president
of the church council, Sunday
school teacher, the Mary Circle,
and the recently completed
Visionary Task Force. Carol had
shown the same concern for her
community. It was demonstrated
through her many years of
involvement with the Belmond
Hospital Auxiliary and her many
years of involvement as a Wright
County Soil Commissioner. She
had served for a time as
president of the Culture Club in
Belmond. She had been a
dedicated volunteer at the
Belmond Health Care Center. She
enjoyed visiting the nursing
home and making crafts for
friends.
Carol’s concern for the land and
conservation continued with her
and her husband’s duties in
traveling around the countryside
delivering seed drills to many
farmers. She had earned numerous
awards for her conservation
work.
Carol was an avid sports fan
during her lifetime. She had
been a league bowler for many
years in the Belmond Bowling
Association, vice president of
the Happy Eight Bowling League,
a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, and
enjoyed high school athletics.
Carol was a strong and faithful
person whose perseverance kept
her on the path to recovery
following a terrible automobile
accident.

Belmond, and continue
one hour prior to the

the church.
Carol Johnson was born
April 29, 1937, in
Carpenter, the daughter
of Clarence Alvin and
Ruth Verda (Parker)
Johnson. She attended
Rock Creek country
school for a time and
then Osage schools,
graduating in 1955.
She was united in
marriage to Alfred
George McLaughlin, Aug.
8, 1959, at Holy Family
Catholic Church, Mason
City. Their union
recently celebrated 45
years and was blessed by
seven children,
Terrance, Lori, Kevin,
Angela, Michelle,
Elizabeth and Susan.
Following their
marriage, Carol and Al
lived for a time in
Belmond. They spent time
living in Hampton,
before making their home
in Grinnell. In 1973,
they returned to
Alfred’s parents’ farm
in rural Belmond, where
they farmed until moving
to their present home in
Belmond in 1983.
Throughout her life,
Carol had put the needs
of others before her
own. She was a devoted
wife and life partner to
Al. Her passion was her
family and nurturing her
children throughout her
life. They will remember
her teaching them her
values, her love of
music, and the
importance of education,
something she believed
in strongly, motivating
her to attend business
school at Hamilton
College, Mason City,
graduating in 1981.
Following college, Carol
was employed by the
State of Iowa Division
of Soil Conservation
from 1981-2002.
Carol was a dedicated
and loving mother and
grandmother who truly
cherished any
opportunity to be a
spectator at any
activity they were
involved with in their
lives, whether they were
a part of a sporting
event, band, or chorus
concert, or any other
extra curricular
activity, Carol was
there as their number
one cheerleader.
Carol looked forward to
family gatherings and
reunions and
opportunities to get
together with her
siblings. She and Al
looked forward to taking
their children on annual
summer vacations during
their school years.
After the children moved
away, Al and Carol loved
to visit their
children’s homes
throughout the country
and state.
Family holidays were
often times spent at the
children’s homes and in
recent years
Thanksgiving took place
in Colorado. They had
taken a special trip to
Hawaii two years ago
which was initiated by
their children. The
couple had also traveled
to Salt Lake City, Utah,
for the Olympics and to
Delaware.
Her devotion to her
faith was shown by her
membership at Trinity
Lutheran Church,
Belmond, where she had
served in many roles
including president of
the Church Council,
Sunday school teacher,
the Mary Circle, and the
recently completed
Visionary Task Force.
Carol had shown the same
concern for her
community. It was
demonstrated through her
many years of
involvement with the
Belmond Hospital
Auxiliary and her many
years of involvement as
a Wright County Soil
Commissioner.
She had served for a
time as president of the
Culture Club in Belmond.
She had been a dedicated
volunteer at the Belmond
Health Care Center. She
enjoyed visiting the
nursing home and making
crafts for friends.
Carol’s concern for the
land and conservation
continued with her and
her husband’s duties in
traveling around the
countryside delivering
seed drills to many
farmers. She had earned
numerous awards for her
conservation work.
Carol was an avid sports
fan during her lifetime.
She had been a league
bowler for many years in
the Belmond Bowling
Association, vice
president of the Happy
Eight Bowling League, a
fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes,
and enjoyed high school
athletics.
Carol was a strong and
faithful person whose
perseverance kept her on
the path to recovery
following a terrible
automobile accident.
Those left to cherish
the memory of her life
include her husband and
life partner of more
than 45 years, Alfred
McLaughlin, Belmond; her
sons, Terrance and wife,
Linda, Des Moines, and
Kevin McLaughlin,
Rochester, Minn.; her
daughters, Lori Ludwig
and husband, Allen,

CECIE M.
FOWLER
MASON
CITY —
Cecie M.
Fowler,
92, of
Mason
City,
died
Friday
(Oct.
29,
2004) at
the IOOF
Home,
Mason
City.
A
memorial
service
will be
held at
2 p.m.
Wednesday
at the
Bible
Baptist
Church
in
Buffalo,
Mo. It
was her
desire
to have
her body
donated
to the
medical
school
at the
Mayo
Clinic.
In lieu
of
flowers,
the
family
requests
that
memorials
be sent
to IOOF
Home or
Hospice
of North
Iowa.
Cecie
Marie
Haney
was born
on Oct.
22,
1912, in
Buffalo,
Missouri,
to
Millie
(Kieth)
Haney
and Mose
Haney.
She was
raised
on the
family
farm in
Buffalo
with her
older
sister,
Isa.
Cecie
spent
many
wonderful
days
with her
sister,
friends,
and
cousins
growing
up, and
graduated
from
Buffalo
High
School
at the
age of
16. She
attended
college
for one
year and
one
semester,
and was
certified
by the
State of
Missouri
to teach
both
elementary
and
secondary
school.
In 1933,
she
married
Clarence
Lawson.
Together
they
rented
farms in
Waverly
and
Malta
Bend,
Mo.,
until
1937,
when
they
returned
to
Buffalo
to take
over her
family’s
farm and
care for
Cecie’s
father
after
his
stroke.
They
later
purchased
the farm
from her
parents.
Cecie
loved
being a
farmer’s
wife,
and
spent
many
decades
living
on the
farm.
She took
great
pleasure
in
tending
her
garden
and
animals,
and
watched
thousands
of
sunsets
from her
kitchen
window.
On
January
1, 1951,
Cecie
gave
birth to
Terrence
Francis
Lawson.
Clarence
and
Cecie
were
delighted
to
finally
have the
family
that
they had
been
hoping
for.
Clarence’s
death in
1959
from
cancer
meant
some big
changes
for the
family.
Cecie
met the
challenges
from
driving
a car
for the
first
time, to
finding
a job
off the
farm
with
incredible
courage
and a
sense of
humor.
Cecie
and
eight-year-old
Terry
continued
to run
the
dairy
business
for a
time,
but
Cecie’s
work at
the MFA
Co-op
became
her
primary
job, and
they
gave up
the
dairy
business.
Cecie
found
great
strength
and
comfort
in her
faith.
She was
a
long-time
member
of the
Bible
Baptist
Church
in
Buffalo,
and
especially
loved
baking
cookies
for
Vacation
Bible
School.
She kept
her
Bible at
her side
all of
her
life,
and even
after
age and
illness
made
going to
church a
hardship,
she
continued
to live
her
faith
every
day.
In 1964,
Cecie
married
Charles
Amos
Fowler.
Amos’
farm was
just
down the
road,
but they
lived on
the farm
where
Cecie
was
born.
Amos was
a loving
husband
and
stepfather.
Once
again,
Cecie
was a
farmer’s
wife.
Cecie
could
grow
anything
anywhere.
Her
garden
often
started
in egg
cartons
or old
tin
cans,
and
starts
of
begonias
and
chrysanthemums
could be
found in
anything
that
would
hold
enough
dirt for
roots.
Her
garden
and
fruit
trees
resulted
in
hundreds
of jars
of green
beans,
the best
anywhere,
tomatoes,
applesauce,
and
cherries.
Being
invited
to a
meal
that
Cecie
cooked
was
always a
treat.
In
addition
to her
wonderful
garden
produce,
her
fried
chicken
and
homemade
rolls
brought
many
smiles.
The
birth of
Cory Lee
Lawson,
Cecie’s
only
grandchild,
in 1987
gave her
décor a
whole
new
direction
as
pictures
of this
new
light in
her life
started
to cover
her
walls.
He was
also the
recipient
of many
plates
of
cookies,
grandma
hugs,
and
hours of
playing
games
with
someone
who
always
let him
win. She
treasured
every
minute
that
they
spent
together.
In 1997,
Amos
died,
leaving
Cecie
once
again a
widow.
In 1998,
health
problems
and
loneliness
led
Cecie to
agree to
a move
to Mason
City,
Iowa, to
be close
to Terry
and his
family.
It was
hard for
her to
leave
her
friends
and home
in
Buffalo,
but she
had a
chance
to spend
more
time
with
Terry
and his
family,
which
they all
appreciated.
Her time
at the
IOOF
Home was
made
easier
by her
sweet
smile
and easy
laugh,
and by
the
wonderful
care she
received
there.
Left to
cherish
her
memory
are her
son,
Terry
Lawson,
his
wife,
Marla,
and
their
son
Cory,
along
with
nephews,
nieces,
and
cousins.
She was
preceded
in death
by her
parents;
two
husbands,
Clarence
Lawson
and
Charles
Amos
Fowler;
and her
sister,
Isa
Legan.
