CHARLES J. ‘CHARLIE’ JAROSH


MASON CITY — Charles J. “Charlie” Jarosh, 62, of 708 15th St. N.E., Mason City, died Wednesday (Sept. 29, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral Mass will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Josephs Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. in Mason City, with Father Michael J. Podhajsky officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City with military honors by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

The family suggests memorials to St. Josephs Catholic Church, Hospice of North Iowa or the American Cancer Society.

Charlie was born June 20, 1942, in Mason City, the son of Ignatius and Ruth (Veech) Jarosh. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1961.

He started working in S&R Chevrolet in Mason City in 1958 in the body shop.

He married Dianne Morris June 12, 1965, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City.

He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1966-1968 and was proud to be a Vietnam vet.

Following the service he moved back to Mason City and continued to work for S&R in the body shop until 1974. He then went to work for John’s Body Shop in Manly, retiring in January 2004 due to health.

Charlie enjoyed fishing, watching auto races, making trips to casinos, visiting with people, and ushering and greeting people at St. Josephs Catholic Church.

He was a member of St. Josephs Catholic Church, Mason City and the Mason City V.F.W.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Dianne Jarosh, of Mason City; two children, Jonathan Jarosh, of Mason City, and Sara Saul and her husband, Kevin, of Vancouver, Wash.; two granddaughters, Makayla and Elizabeth Shaul, of Vancouver, Wash.; twin brother, Carl Jarosh, of Mason City; and sister, Sylvia Colman and her husband, Thomas, of Mason City; four nephews, Robert Jarosh and his wife, Cathy, of Cheyenne, Wyo., Christopher Jarosh, of Loveland, Colo., William Colman and his wife, Patty, of Paris, Ky. and Joseph Colman and his wife, Christina, of Thornton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his mother and father-in-law, Vivian and Robert Morris.

Barbara E. Lorenzen

WODEN — Barbara E. Lorenzen Cromwell, 59, of Woden, died Tuesday (Sept. 28, 2004) at her home.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Woden with the Rev. Arlen Lloyd officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in Bingham Township Cemetery, Woden.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Woden and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Barbara Ellan Lorenzen Cromwell, the daughter of Willie and Charlotte (Smith) Phillips, was born March 24, 1945, at Buffalo Center. She attended country school near Woden until the age of 11, when she moved with her family to Marietta, Minn.

On Oct. 25, 1961, she was married to Vernon Lorenzen at Madison, Minn. They lived in South Dakota, where they raised their six children be-fore moving to Woden in 1969.

In May of 1971, another child, Scott, was added to their family.

Barb was employed at Winnebago Industries from 1971 to 1974, drove school bus from 1974 to 1980 and in 1975 started Barb’s Poultry Picking, which she operated until selling it to her daughter, Tammy, in 1983. She began driving semi in 1975 for Bituminus in Algona and later for Brazos Transport in Fort Dodge.

On July 27, 1986, her husband, Vernon, died in a semi accident. After his death, Barb continued to live in Woden and in 1988 began driving for Keim Transport and ran the terminal.

On June 9, 1990, she was married to Marlin Cromwell at Trinity Lutheran Church in Forest City. They lived in Woden and drove semi together for Norseman Trucking in Lake Mills. They continued to drive as a team until Aug. 6, 2004.

Barb enjoyed her grandchildren, gardening, tending to her flowerbeds, camping, NASCAR racing, needlework and collecting dolls, Beanie Babies, angels and music boxes. She also enjoyed playing bear claw machines and would give her prizes to her grandchildren or children in need.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the Iowa Motor Truck Association.

Barb is survived by her husband, Marlin, of Woden; seven children, Kimberly (Larry) Flatebo of Woden, Susan (Darrell) Brandt of Bricelyn, Minn., Robert (Lisa) Lorenzen of Mason City, Tammra Lorenzen and significant other, Corey Williams, of Buffalo Center, Patricia (Clay) Hobbs of Britt, Pamela (Bryce) Juhl of Fort Dodge, and Scott (Tina) Lorenzen of Lincolnton, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Terry Rogers, of Boone; grandchildren, Kristi, Jeremy, Renae, Matthew, Shannon, Lucas, Austin, Laura, Daniel, Brianna, Ryan, Evan, Logan, Morgan, Cassandra, Dakota and Devin; step-grandchildren, Jessica, Jon, James, Jessa and Janelle; a brother, Billy (Ingrid) Phillips, of Rockford, Ill.; a sister, Beverly Phillips of Fort Worth, Texas; and many nieces, nephews and other family.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Vernon; and her parents.

CHARLES CITY — D. Jean Ellery, 85, of 5 Lions Drive, Charles City, died Thursday (Sept. 30, 2004) in the care of Hospice at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 601 Milwaukee St., Charles City, with the Rev. Paul Wilcox officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

CHARLES CITY — Delbert Zimmer, 93, of Charles City, died Tuesday (Sept. 28, 2004) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 9, 2004) at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, with Pastor Phil Corr of the First Congregational Church officiating. BELMOND — Leona W. Wessels Goulty, 90, of Belmond, died Thursday (Sept. 30, 2004) at her home.

Funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Church in Belmond with Pastor Mike Druhl officiating. Burial will take place in the Meservey Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane S. in Belmond, and one hour prior to the service on Sunday at the church.

Memorials may be made in Leona’s name.

Leona Wilma Prilipp, the daughter of William Robert and Anna Janssen Prilipp, was born Feb. 19, 1914, in Hancock County near Meservey. She was raised in that area, where she attended country school and Meservey schools.

Leona was united in marriage to Luke Wessels on Nov. 1, 1933. They lived in the Meservey, Thornton and Belmond areas where Leona helped Luke farm and raise their family.

In 1966, the couple lost their home in the Belmond tornado. Luke passed away in l971.

In 1984, she married Lyle Goulty and shortly thereafter lived in Kenyon, Minn. Lyle died in 1986.

In 1994, Leona moved back to Belmond.

Leona is survived by a son, Robert and his wife, Kathy, of Belmond; two daughters-in-law, Elaine Wessels of Belmond and Donna Wessels of Washington; 12 grandchildren, Duane Wessels and his wife, Barb, of Belmond, Dwight Wessels of Goodell, Jason Wessels and wife, Jennifer, of Nevada, Troy Wessels and wife, Sarah, of Belmond, Lynn Henn and husband, Nathan, of West Des Moines, Tracy McGinnis and husband, Mike, of Muscatine, Katrina Herink of Iowa Falls, Lila Pfleger and husband, Chad, of Knoxville, Tenn., Lisa Blumenshine and husband, Tim, of St. John, Wash., Steve Wessels and wife, Wendy, of LaSalle, Colo., Brenda Johnson and husband, John, of Fort Lupton, Colo., and Lori Steerman and husband, Steve, of Keensburg, Colo.; three stepgrandchildren, Mike Roth of Sunset, Wash., Frank of Dallas, Texas, and Lea Ann Hergert of St. John, Wash.; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many special nieces and nephews.

LAKE MILLS — Steven L. Peterson, 61, of Lake Mills, passed away on Thursday (Sept. 30, 2004) at his home in Lake Mills.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Salem Lutheran Church with Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating. Burial will take place at the Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills with military honors performed by the Otto/Chose Post No. 235 of Lake Mills.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 E. Main St. in Lake Mills and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Steven Leslie Peterson was born on Nov. 6, 1942, at Forest City, Iowa, the son of Leslie and Marjorie (Heltne) Peterson. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. Steve was confirmed at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Ankeny High School in 1960 and went on to attend Iowa State University.

Following his schooling, Steve worked construction and drove semi truck for Dahlen Transport. He loved the outdoors, working in his yard and taking care of his flowers. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Steve also loved to fish and to travel, and he went on many vacations with Diane’s family.

Those left to cherish his memory are Diane Brackey of Lake Mills; a daughter, Nichole Segura and her husband, Ben, of Lake Mills; two sons, Scott Peterson of Lake Mills and David Ekman of Burlington; six grandchildren, Sarah, Rachel and Jacob Segura, all of Lake Mills, and Jessica, Valorie and Kristen Ekman, all of Burlington; his mother, Marjorie Peterson of Ankeny; a sister, Mary Adams of Las Vegas, Nev.; a niece, Kara Adams, and nephew, Michael Adams, both of Las Vegas, and Diane’s family, Ray and Thelma Isaacson of Albert Lea, Minn., Dave and Patti Hissam of Marshall, Minn., Danny and Pam Brackey of Lake Mills, Robert and Julie Brackey of Albert Lea, Minn., and Deb Bergland of Albert Lea.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, Leslie Peterson, and his grandparents.

Stanley R. Hanson was born Nov. 30, 1929, at Decorah, a son of Sigurd and Ruth (Bakke) Hanson. A 1947 graduate of Decorah High School, Stan served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-54. He graduated from Luther College at Decorah in 1957. He was united in marriage to Irene Munson on July 12, 1958, at First Baptist Church, La Crosse, Wis.

Stan was involved in the real estate and insurance business at A & J Agency, Decorah, from 1957 until retiring in 1993 and moving to Mason City. He enjoyed spending summers at their cabin on Lake Nisswa in Minnesota.

In Decorah, Stan held memberships at Decorah Lutheran Church, Elks, Rotary, Decorah Real Estate Association and Oneota Golf Club. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City.

He is survived by his wife Irene, Mason City; a daughter, Janelle (Scott) Bothwell, Mason City; a grandson, Nathan Bothwell, Mason City; two step-grandchildren, Carl (Amy) Bothwell, Mason City, and Heather (Cory ) Fabert, Cedar Rapids; a sister, Elene (Harold) Henrickson, Coon Rapids, Minn.; a brother-in law, Roy Munson, Pulaski, Tenn., and three nieces and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey, on Feb. 11, 1974; a granddaughter, Sara, in infancy; two sisters-in-law, Betty Munson and Vivian Munson, and his parents.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, where full military honors will be conducted by members of Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. N.E., Mason City, where a scriptural wake service will be held at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be given to Holy Family Catholic Church.

Richard I. Wygle was born Feb. 13, 1929, at Keokuk, a son of Leonard P. and Olivia (Eschbach) Wygle.

Dick served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Hawaii. He was a graduate of Iowa State University with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. For several years, he worked with Link Aviation. He married JoAnn L. Iosbaker on May 11, 1957, at Sigourney.

For many years, he worked for Sperry Univac as a systems analyst manager at the St. Paul, Minn., facility. He later worked at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico as the manager for the development of software for its guided missile program.

In 1981, they moved to Mason City, where Dick worked for Univac/Unisys at the Clear Lake location, managing the computer software center.

Dick was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Mensa International. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the Minnesota Vikings.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Wygle; two sons, Robert Paul Wygle and Thomas Gerard Wygle; a daughter, Mary Joan Wygle; five grandchildren; a brother, Hugh Wygle, and a sister, Shirley Skerik.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

HILDA KUGLER


FOREST CITY — Hilda Kugler, 81, of Forest City, died Friday (Oct. 1, 2004) at her daughter’s home in Mason City.

Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services at the church.

Hilda Kugler was born in Kirchensall, Germany, on June 25, 1928, the daughter of Johann and Maria (Grupp) Andreas. She grew up and attended school in Ohringen, Germany, and received her degree in accounting. Hilda was later drafted into the German army and served as a captain.

In 1953, Hilda immigrated to America, eventually settling in Mason City where she worked as the office manager for JC Penney. On Dec. 16, 1961, she married Oskar Kugler at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The couple made Forest City their home for many years.

Hilda was a devout Republican and was very active in county and state Republican politics. She was a wonderful cook and treasured time spent with her family and her grandchildren. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City.

Hilda is survived by her children, Erika (Bradley) Gentz of Mason City, Uwe (Debbie) Kugler of Thunder Lake, Mo., Heinz J. Kugler of Waterloo and Werner (Debbie) Kugler of Coconut Creek, Fla., along with 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Also surviving is a sister, Irmgard Deininger, of Schwabish Hall, Germany, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oskar; a son, Oskar H. Kugler; a sister, Elfriede Andreas, and a brother, Otto Andreas.

MASON CITY — Leonard Boggess, 88, of 302 2nd St. N.E., died Friday (Oct. 1, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice In-patient Unit.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Jim Stiles of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Leonard was born May 14, 1916, in rural New Hampton, the son of Calvin and Mabel (Frazee) Boggess. He attended schools in Chickasaw County.

Leonard farmed around the Charles City area for 20 years. He also worked in the maintenance department for the city of Charles City, retiring in 1981. Leonard moved to Mason City in 1991.

Leonard is survived by his son, Mark Boggess of Mason City; three step-sons, Rodney, James and Raymond; five step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Grace Griffen of Mason City, Gertrude Hauser of New Hampton, and Maebelle Stelzer of Charles City; a brother, Harley Boggess and wife, Daisy, of Charles City; special niece, Dorothy Vandenbetter, and special friend, Jennie Boggess of Mason City.

MOUNT PLEASANT— Bernadine E. Standley, 80, 501 E. Madison St., Mount Pleasant, and formerly of the Clear Lake and Klemme areas, died at 10:55 p.m. on Thursday (Sept. 30, 2004) at the Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

A funeral service for Bernadine Standley will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Weir & Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 N. Main St., Mount Pleasant.

Mrs. Standley, the former Bernadine Elaine Lundy, was born Oct. 2, 1923, in Clear Lake, the daughter of Orris Milo and Lenora Thelma (Lawhorn) Lundy. She was raised and attended schools in the Clear Lake and Klemme areas.

On May 30, 1940, in Sheffield, Bernadine was united in marriage to Donald Clark Standley. Mr. Standley died Sept. 3, 1971, at the Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Mrs. Standley worked at the Surf Ballroom and the Holiday Restaurant in Clear Lake. In 1966, the family moved to make their home in Mount Pleasant. Mrs. Standley then worked for Emerson Electric, Heatilator and Motorola, all in Mount Pleasant. For several years after that, Bernadine was the secretary for the Mount Pleasant office of the Iowa Department of Public Health. She retired in 1985.

Bernadine enjoyed sewing as she was an excellent seamstress. She loved to bake and cook. She also found time to engage in several forms of craft making.

Those thankful for sharing in Bernadine’s life include two sons and their wives, Don W. and Lois Standley of Garner, and Jim and Linda Standley of Fultondale, Ala.; three daughters, Donnitta Hayungs and her friend, Joe Shafer, of Garner, Cindy Koelm and her husband, Raymond, of Altamont, Ill., and Kathy Kimbrough and her husband, Keith, of Mount Pleasant; one sister, Mrs. Madelyn Paca of Garner; one sister-in-law, Aretta Van Dorin of Mount Pleasant; 12 grandchildren, 16 great- grandchildren and 3 step- great-grandchildren.

Her parents; husband; a son-in-law, Robert B. Hayungs, and a brother-in- law, George Paca, precede Bernadine in death.

MANLY— Edwin R. Wolfgram, 85, formerly of Manly, died Sunday (Oct. 3, 2004) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, with the Rev. Thomas Healey, Hospice of North Iowa chaplain, officiating. Interment will follow at the Manly Cemetery, where military honors will be conducted by members of the Edward Tosel American Legion Post No. 110 of Manly.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and also one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Memorials may be directed to the Edwin R. Wolfgram Memorial Fund.

Edwin was born Feb. 7, 1919, in Oakdale, Wis., a son of Herman and Adelia Mae (Prell) Wolfgram. He served in the 515th Army Airborne Infantry from 1944 until 1946. During World War II, he was one of the paratroopers who performed reconaissance before the invasion of Normandy.

Edwin moved to Iowa in 1965 and was united in marriage to Deloris (Clark) Madsen on July 2, 1966 in Blair, Neb. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for the McInish Co. in Des Moines until 1980 and then worked for Randall Transit Mix in Manly for 13 years.

Edwin was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers and was a very active member of the Edward Tosel American Legion Post 110 in Manly, where he served as secretary/treasurer, helped with fund-raising and assisted in organizing the deceased member memorial boards at the Manly Cemetery. He enjoyed socializing with friends and family, and spending time with his dog, Rosebud, who he affectionately called “Poopsie.”

Edwin will be greatly missed by his children, Yovette Murphy, and her husband, Bob, of Mason City, Dee Ann Samuelson of Manly, Brenda Morlan of Onawa, Craig Madsen and his wife, Jody, of Council Bluffs, Lori Carter and her husband, Ron, of Onawa, and Mark Madsen of Logan, and 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three children from his first marriage, Richard, Sue Ellen and Nancy Jo.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Deloris; a daughter, Debbie; three brothers, Lester, Albert and Theodore Wolfgram, and an infant sister.

DUMONT— Harley L. Cuvelier, 84, of Dumont, passed away Friday (Oct. 1, 2004) at his home in Dumont.

Harley was born on June 25, 1920, in Hansell, Iowa, to Hyrom Elmore and Iva M. (Vincent) Cuvelier. He graduated from Dumont High School. Harley served his country during World War II from 1941 to 1945 in the Air Force as a master sergeant. While in the Air Force, Harley was crew chief on a B-17. He was proud of the fact that his crew never lost a plane on its missions over Europe.

He was married to Ruth Truex on Nov. 17, 1945, in Bristow, Iowa. Harley farmed and worked construction in the rural Dumont area. After retiring from farming, he became a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office in Dumont, retiring in 1996. He was a member of the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont. Harley was a member of the Men’s Quartet, a Sunday school teacher, and a trustee of the church. He was also a member of the Rural Letter Carrier’s Association, Lions Club and the American Legion. Harley enjoyed going fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth M. Cuvelier, of Dumont; daughter, Roxa Lee Clarke, of Houston, Texas; daughter Hope I. and husband, Norm Guidie, of Bradenton, Fla.; granddaughter, Jenna Guidie of Bradenton, Fla.; grandson Martin Guidie also of Bradenton; brother, Albert Cuvelier, of Grand Blanc, Mich.; brother, Iven Cuvelier of New Hartford; brother, Orlo Cuvelier of Ora Valley, Ariz.; sister, Maxine Hahn, of Hampton; brother, Leland “Abe” and wife, LaVera Cuvelier, of Aplington; brother, Bob and wife, Dolores Cuvelier, of Lawler; sister, Donna, and husband, Sheryl Sokolik, of Hampton; sister, Dorothy and husband, Don Harmon, of Anamosa; sister, Carol Koenen, of Hampton, and a brother, Craig and wife, Jean Cuvelier, of Sierra Vista, Ariz.

BELMOND — Cindy M. Rabe, 52, a lifelong resident of the Belmond area and former executive director of the Belmond Area Chamber of Commerce, died Friday (Oct. 1, 2004) with her family at her side at the Belmond Medical Center following a courageous battle with cancer.

Cynthia Trees was born Feb. 28, 1952, at the Steele Memorial Hospital in Belmond, the daughter of Paul George and Marjorie (Wigg) Trees. She was one of five children in the Trees family. She was preceded in death by a brother, Terry, in 1964.

Cindy attended Belmond Community Schools and graduated from Belmond High School in 1970. She then went on to attend Mankato Commercial College in Mankato, Minn., where she majored in accounting.

Cindy was united in marriage to Neal A. Rabe on July 17, 1971. To this union was born two children, Jeffrey and Krista.

Cindy began her career working as bookkeeper/accountant at ACCO Seed Co. in Belmond. She later went to work for Lloyd Anders, CPA, and the Belmond Independent newspaper and PSI.

In October of 1995, she became employed by the Belmond Area Chmber of Commerce. Cindy was the executive director for the Chamber and BIDCO (Belmond Industrial Development) until this past winter, when her health forced her to retire. Throughout her entire life, Cindy was devoted to her community.

In her role as the executive of the Chamber and BIDCO, she relished the opportunity to promote the attributes of Belmond and the surrounding areas. She was always searching for new ways to put the community in the spotlight. Her enthusiasm and passion for putting others’ needs first allowed her to work comfortably with almost anyone. Her willingness to lend an open ear and explore the ideas of others made her a wonderful leader to hundreds of business owners, employees, civic groups and volunteers over the years.

Her passion for learning and striving to make the area an even better place to live, work and play was strengthened by her professional involvement in groups such as the Iowa Chamber Executives, Professional Developers of Iowa, Wright County Tourism, Central Iowa River Partnership, Promotion Council, Wright County Economic Development, and many other groups and organizations.

Prior to her illness, she was looking forward to working on the plans for the Belmond 150th Anniversary Celebration and various other new projects.

Cindy loved life and most importantly times spent with her family. They had been on several fishing excursions to Canada, and in the fall of 2003 they enjoyed a fishing trip to Wisconsin.

She was very excited about her new granddaughter, Molly Hartwig, who blessed her life shortly before her illness began. Cindy loved times spent with friends, going shopping, crafting, home decorating, family gatherings, camping and going out to dinner with friends, especially Tex-Mex nights with her good friend, Kathy Boller.

In earlier years she enjoyed golf. Many who knew Cindy will remember her warm and welcoming smile and laugh, her great sense of humor, her passion for life and placing the needs of others before her own, her wisdom and strong beliefs, and her love of her family and community.

RAYMOND ‘RAY’ AGUILERA


MANLY — Raymond “Ray” Aguilera, 92, of Manly died Monday (Oct. 4, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 412 N. Broadway in Manly, with the Rev. David G. Kucera and the Rev. Todd Leet officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Manly, with military graveside honors by the Edward Tosel American Legion Post #110 of Manly.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St. in Manly, with a public scriptural prayer service at 6 p.m.

Ramon “Ray” Aguilera was born on Sept. 4, 1912, in LaPiedad Michoacan, Mexico, the son of Encarnacion and Guadalupe (Aguirre) Aguilera. In 1913, the family moved to the United States, finding work in the coal mines of southern Texas.

A job with the Southern Pacific Railroad then moved the family to San Antonio.

In 1923, the family relocated to the northern and most central part of Iowa, where they labored in the onion and sugar beet fields of the area.

The winters of 1923-24 were spent in Mason City, where Raymond was sent to school.

In 1933, he moved to Manly with prospects of working for the Rock Island Railroad. For the next 70 years this would be Ray’s home.

In 1935, Ray started working for the Rock Island Railroad until his retirement. He was united in marriage to M. Celia “Sally” Negrete on Feb. 9, 1939, in Ft. Dodge, Iowa, and to this union six children were born.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Dec. 28, 1943, at Camp Dodge, Iowa.

Raymond served with the 733rd Army Corps of Engineers in the European, African and the Asiatic theaters during World War II, and was awarded the European, African Middle Eastern service medal, and the Asiatic Pacific service medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged as a Tech. 5 on Jan. 8, 1946.

Raymond devoted his life to working on the railroad, gardening, fishing, playing cards, listening to Mexican music and cutting the grass on his riding mower, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly, and was a 59-year member of the Edward Tosel American Legion Post 110 of Manly.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Josie Weinschenk of Allison, Iowa, Shirley Richardson and her husband, John, of Fertile, Rita Cantu of Blaine, Minn., Gloria Hackbart and her husband, Philip, of Kensett, Dennis Aguilera and his wife, Barbara, of Sun Prairie, Wis., and Rick Aguilera and his wife, Diane, of Manly; 19 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; a brother, Charlie Aguilera of Mason City; as well as other relatives and friends.

CLEAR LAKE — Leora H. Nye, 92, of Clear Lake died Monday (Oct. 4, 2004) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Congregational Church, 205 W. 10th Ave. N., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Thom Christian officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Leora was born Feb. 16, 1912, in Decorah, the daughter of Carl and Ella (Olson) Hanson. Leora graduated from Decorah High School in 1929.

She worked at JC Penney as a bookkeeper in Decorah.

She married Howard J. Nye June 19, 1937, in Clear Lake. They lived in Tripoli until they moved back to Clear Lake in 1939.

She worked at Hansen’s, Imperial Seed Co, Graham’s Department Store and did alterations for Verna’s Fashion Shoppe. She made caps and gowns for P.T. Castle Co.

She was the resident manager for Lakeland Apartments for 15 months. She went to be a resident of Oakwood Care Center in 2001.

Leora loved crocheting, knitting, watching her soap opera on TV and shopping.

She was a great mom and grandmother; her actions spoke louder than her words.

Leora was a member of the First Congregational Church of Clear Lake.

Leora is survived by three children, Karen Nye of Mason City, Amy Snow and her husband, Dwight, of Fridley, Minn., and Kevin Nye of Clear Lake; six grandchildren, Eric Meyer and his wife, Jennifer, of Farmington, Minn., Rebecca Snow Whitaker and her husband, Mike, of Phoenix, Ariz., Curtis Snow and Crysten Snow, of Fridley, Minn., Casey Nye of Fayette, and Cory Nye of Clear Lake; two great-grandchildren, Lauren and Ethan Meyer.

Leora was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

WEST DES MOINES — Gertrude B. “Trudy” Thaden, 84, died peacefully on Sunday (Oct. 3, 2004) at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

Trudy was born in Dakota, Minn., and farmed with her husband in Northern Iowa for 30 years, retiring to Des Moines in 1982.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Trudy will be remembered with love and affection by all who knew her.

Trudy is survived by her son, Gene Thaden (Kathy) of Des Moines; three daughters, Beth Stelling, Barbara Thaden and Nona Dietrich, all of the Twin Cities; four grandsons; five great-grandchildren; and a dear friend, Joleta Laktash, of Windsor Heights.

MASON CITY — Carl R. Grover, 75, of 118 16th Street N.W., died Saturday (Oct. 2, 2004) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel.

Carl R. Grover was born July 29, 1929, in Hannibal, Mo., the son of Fred and Leota (Whitman) Grover.

He was united in marriage to Florence (Mueller) Grover, and to this union five children were born.

He worked on a family dairy farm and in the family jewelry store as a watch repairman in Warrensburg, Mo.

He moved to Waterloo in 1961 and became a journeyman electrician.

In 1979 he moved to Manly, working as an electrician.

In 1986 he moved to Mason City, working for Thomas Electric, retiring in 1992.

He loved woodworking, reading and debating politics.

He is survived by three children, Shirley and her husband, Mark Beal, of Northwood, Carl Grover of Mason City, and Fred Grover of Ottumwa; son-in-law, Mike Owens of Houston Texas; nine grandchildren, Becky and Amanda Grover, Jeremy Fournier, Gabe and his wife, Karen, Beal, Michelle and her husband, David, Petersburg, Leota Runfola, Lena O’Donnell, Teah and Tristah Hall; nine great-grandchildren, Blake, A.J., Madison, and Brittany Olson, Zach, Allison and Madilyn Petersburg, and Calvin and Krister Beal; special friends, Chad, Kaity, Jayce and Maci McGuire, Kelly Keating, Sandy Fournier, along with many other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by parents, wife and two daughters, Eldine Owens and Carla Kelly.

DEBRA J. (DUCLOS) SAWTELLE


ROCKFORD, Ill. — Debra J. (DuClos) Sawtelle, 49, of Rockford, Ill., died Wednesday (Sept. 29, 2004) at Swedish Am. Hospital in Rockford, of a lengthy battle with cancer.

Debra was born Sept. 6, 1955, to Lewis and Doris (Maxine) DuClos. She graduated from Ventura High School in 1973.

Debbi married Dave Sawtelle in September of 1978, and to that union two sons were born.

Debbi is survived by two sons, Bernard (B.J.) and Lucas Sawtelle; two twin grandsons, Deegan and Devon Sawtelle, all of Rockford, Ill.; her mother, Maxine DuClos of Clear Lake; two sisters, Diane DuClos and Doreen Pasieka, both of Clear Lake; fiancé, Mark Rasmussen, and special friend, Carol Bradley, Rockford, Ill.; nieces, Shannon, Sara and Rachel DuClos of Clear Lake and Jennifer Pasieka of Mystic, Conn.; nephew, Chris DuClos; great-niece, Mikah DuClos; great-nephew, Jorden DuClos all of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her father, Lewis; brother David DuClos; and paternal and maternal grandparents.

Memorial services will be held in Rockford, Ill., at a later date.

ST. ANSGAR — Gordon M. Saaranen, 79, of St. Ansgar died Saturday (Oct. 2, 2004) at his home, surrounded by family.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar.

Gordy was born Aug. 8, 1925, in Castlewood, S.D., the son of Fredrich and Jemina (Thompson) Saaranen.

Gordy lived on the family farm with his dad until he joined the U.S. Navy in 1950. He served during the Korean War on the USS ORyan.

In June 1954 he moved to Austin where he married Shirley Marie Hanson on July 31, 1954.

Gordy worked for the Austin City Street Department for 21 years until his retirement in July 1983.

He and Shirley then returned to the family farm on Lake Poinset, S.D., where they lived for 12 years.

They moved to St. Ansgar, Iowa, in 1995.

He was an active member of First Lutheran Church and the American Legion in St. Ansgar.

In his spare time, Gordy enjoyed working on cars, fishing, hunting, but most of all spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Gerald, Russell and Douglas Sr.; and sister, Faye Reinardy.

Gordy is survived by his wife, Shirley of St. Ansgar; sons, Fredrich (Kay) of St. Ansgar, Timothy (Linda) of LeHigh, Fla.; three daughters, Jennifer Saaranen and Jim Huebner of Austin, Karen (John) Baldridge of Boulder, Colo., and Carol (Dan) Thomas of Austin; one brother, Clayton (Nat) Saaranen of Largo, Fla.; one sister, Virgid Isaacson of Lake Norden, S.D.; seven grandchildren, Chad Thomas, Sarah Thomas, Amanda Saaranen, Sammantha Saaranen, Michael Saaranen, Elliot Baldridge and Jenna Baldridge; special nephews, Douglas Jr., Francis and Robert Saaranen.

CLARION — Audrey Jean Tomke, 84, formerly of Clear Lake died Monday (Oct. 4, 2004) at the Pella Region Health Center in Pella.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the St. John’s Cemetery, Clarion, with the Rev. David Beckman officiating.

Audrey was born Jan. 7, 1920, at Clarion, the daughter of Merle and Alice (Williams) Wood. She attended Clarion schools and graduated in 1938.

Audrey married Stanley Tomke in June of 1942 in Clarion. After her husband returned from the service in the military, Audrey and Stan lived in Rockwell, and later moved to Clear Lake.

After their retirement, they spent the winter months in Florida.

Audrey is survived by her son, Craig Tomke and his wife, Karen, of Hayden, Colo., three granddaughters, Valerie Jean Boehlje and her husband, Chad, of Pella, Kathleen Anne Krumm and her husband, Michael Tracy, of San Jose, Calif. and Krista Tomke of Hayden, Colo.; her sister, Phyllis Rohle and her, husband, Richard, of Waterloo.

Audrey is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Stan (Sept 29, 2000); and one brother, Bud Wood.
