Albert Earle
Martin was born
Sept. 13, 1908,
to Marion
(Finch) and
Earle Martin on
a farm west of
Belmond. He was
educated in
Belmond schools,
at St. Thomas
Military Academy
in Minneapolis,
Minn., at
Marquette
University, and
Iowa State
University.
Upon graduation
from Iowa State
in 1931, he
worked for the
Iowa Extension
Service. On
February 10,
1934, he married
Dorothy Sweeney,
and they
subsequently
lived in
Marshalltown and
Des Moines. In
1936, he and his
wife moved to
Indianapolis,
Ind., where
Albert became
regional office
director with
the Farmers Home
Administration.
In December
1940, he was
called to active
military service
with the U.S.
Army and
assigned to an
artillery unit
at Camp Stewart,
near Savannah,
Ga. In June
1943, he was
sent to North
Africa with the
45th Infantry
Division, where
he was assigned
responsibility
for a
self-propelled
anti-aircraft
unit. After
landing in
Sicily, the unit
was reassigned
to the 3rd
Infantry
Division. That
division landed
at Salerno,
Italy, and moved
north to help
liberate Rome,
it then landed
in Southern
France, west of
Marseille, and
fought north
through France.
The division
moved east
through Germany,
eventually
capturing
Hitler’s Eagles
Nest
headquarters
southwest of
Munich. After 27
months of
combat, with a
Purple Heart and
a Bronze Star,
Albert returned
to the United
States in
August, 1945. He
was honorably
discharged from
active duty and
joined an Army
Reserve unit, in
which he
remained active
until October
1961, when he
retired with the
rank of
lieutenant
colonial.
After the war,
returning to
Iowa, the
Veterans
Adminstration
employed Albert,
where he had the
responsibility
of working with
the state
agricultural
organizations to
establish the
first statewide
farm training
program for
veterans. The
program became
the model for
the VA’s
national
program. After
twenty years
with the
Veterans
Administration,
he retired in
1966.
Soon after, he
took on
administrative
responsibilities
at the Ames
Laboratory on
the campus of
Iowa State
University,
where he worked
until 1976.
During this
time, while
living in Ames,
Albert was
active in the
community, St.
Cecilia’s
Parish, Iowa
State Alumni and
fraternity
associations.

his wife
returned to

Belmond he
became a
participant in
St. Francis
Xavier Catholic
Church, the
Knights of
Columbus, the
Veterans of
Foreign Wars,
the Belmond
Historical
Society and
Museum, and a
variety of other
organizations.
Albert and
Dorothy raised
and educated
four children:
James, Marion,
Linda, and Jane.
The couple
greatly enjoyed
travel as a form
of education and
a way of meeting
new friends. By
1960, they had
visited every
state in the
union. Later,
they visited
many countries
on every major
continent, and
Albert shared
slides of their
trips at
retirement and
community
centers.
In late May of
this year,
Albert returned
to Italy for the
60th anniversary
reunion of U.S.
soldiers who had
landed at the
Salerno and
Anzio beaches
and liberated
Rome. This
summer he
continued to

family and
friends. His
wonderful
