she
worked

Company
in Des
Moines.
She was
united
in
marriage
to James
Frampton
on Aug.
8, 1946,
in
Boone.
After
their
marriage
they
lived in
Boone
where
Elsie
worked
for
Montgomery
Ward’s
until
1960
when the
family
moved to
Oregon.
Elsie
and her
husband
James
operated
a
bowling
alley
and
night
club in
Roseberg,
Ore.,
for four
years
before
moving
to Clear
Lake in
1964.
After
moving
to Clear
Lake,
Elsie
worked
for Land
O’Lakes
in Mason
City in
the
office
until
her
retirement
in 1980.
Elsie
was an
avid
bowler,
loved
her
family,
her dog
“Little
Lady”,
and
collecting
thimbles.
She was
a member
of the
United
Methodist
Church
in
Boone.
Left to

her
memory

DARRELL L. HIER
CLEAR LAKE — Darrell L. Hier, 73, of 114 N. 20th St. in Clear Lake went home to his Lord on Saturday (Oct. 9, 2004) after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. in Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Derik Yarian officiating. Military honors will be by the Clear Lake V.F.W.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake. Inurnment will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Sleepy Eye, Minn.
Memorials may be directed to the Darrell Hier Memorial Fund.
Darrell was born Sept. 9, 1931, to La Forest and Ada (Evenson) Hier, in Springfield, Minn.
He graduated from Springfield High School in 1949. After graduation, he attended Mankato State College for one year, then enlisted in the Navy, spending most of that time in the Panama Canal Zone.
Following his discharge from the Navy he attended the University of Minnesota, graduating with a degree in industrial engineering in December of 1959.
Upon his graduation from college he became the general supervisor for Del Monte Packing Company in Arlington, Wis. Darrell received a $2,000 reward from the Del Monte Packing Corporation for his cost-saving suggestion of brine use. Darrell retired in 1989.
In May of 1960 Darrell married Marion Sellner in the St. Mary’s rectory in Sleepy Eye, Minn. They made their home in Portage, Wis. Darrell and Marion were both honored as outstanding citizens of Portage.
In cooperation with the Portage Police Department, they started the Teddy Bear Program for abused children and were instrumental in initiating fingerprinting for children’s safety.
Darrell was financial chairman for the United Methodist Church in Portage for 40 years, and was involved in many other leadership programs in the church. Darrell was active in sports and an avid bowler. Marion died in a car accident in December of 1996.
Darrell married Elizabeth von Fischer Martin on March 18, 2000. Darrell was a blessing to all, especially his wife and children. He never refused a request to help out where there was a need.
He was active in the Noon Lions Club, SALT, a member of the Clear Lake VFW and Senior Center vice president.
He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. He participated in the Senior Choir, Elderberries, a financial counter assistant, Wednesday Morning Bible Breakfast and the Men’s Night Bible Study Group.
Darrell loved to play golf; you could find him out there, even in the rain. His greatest joy was becoming a father and grandfather. He spent many happy hours attending family celebrations and grandchildren’s activities.
Darrell enjoyed his animal friends and they will miss his attention. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Darrell is survived by his wife Elizabeth “Betty” Hier of Clear Lake; three children, Tim (Sherry) Becker of Mason City; Cynthia (Randy) Reid and Dan (Julie) Becker, both of Clear Lake.; two brothers, Percy (Marjorie) Hier of Bettendorf, and the Rev. Dennis (Jan) Hier of Willmar, Minn.; a sister, Dorothy (Gene) Ostrom, of Rochester, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Ben, Emily and Zach Becker, Jacob, Elizabeth, and Elijah Reid, and Eric, Megan and Leah Becker; nieces and nephews, David (Sandy) Hier; Kathy Hier; Karna (Michael) Loyland; Sarah (Geoffrey) Nelson; Nate (Rachel) Hier; Chris (Tim) Cass; and Karis Hier; his first wife’s sister, Lorraine Roiger, Sleepy Eye, Minn.; her children, Christi (Phil) Hanson and their daughter, Erica, Vicki (Russ) Schroepfer and their foster sons Bobby, Mike and others.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife; and infant grandson, Joshua Reid.

NANCY LEE LORENTZEN
ROCKWELL — Nancy Lee Lorentzen, 56, of Rockwell died Saturday (Oct. 9, 2004) at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn., after a strongly fought battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 502 S. Second St. in Rockwell with Pastor Ron Bolinger officiating. Interment will be in the Rockwell Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City.

Nancy was born on March 17, 1948, the daughter of John and Margaret (Jiminez) Levenhagen in Mason City. She was the oldest of five children.
Nancy attended school in Rockwell-Swaledale and graduated in the Class of 1966. She was active as a cheerleader and in various clubs.
Following her graduation Nancy was united in marriage to Jerry Lorentzen on March 25, 1967. They had two children, Mike and Matthew.
Nancy sold Home Interiors for five years and studied at North Iowa Area Community College and earned her B.A. in business.
Nancy worked at I.M.I. Cornelius from 1978 until her illness.
She was a little thing that had a lot of spirit. Her loves were her crafts and going to craft shows. Nancy loved to dress and decorate for the holidays and enjoyed her yard and flowers.
Nancy was a cheerleader at work and enjoyed making treats for her co-workers.
She loved her convertible and summer road trips with loud music, eating at new places and gambling. She loved her family so very much.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Jerry, of Rockwell; son Mike and wife Karrie of Mason City; four grandchildren, Jordan, Devin, Joshua and Ashley; her parents, John and Margaret Levenhagen of Rockwell; brother, Bill Levenhagen and wife Nancy of Rockwell; sister, Barb Jones and husband Fred of Mason City; sister, Deb Behr and husband Lee of Rockwell; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Carol Lorentzen, of Mason City; many nieces and nephews and especially a true friend, Sandy, and a special friend, Mona.

HANLONTOWN — Harold Richard Skilbred, 78 of 102 Iowa St., Hanlontown, died Sunday (Oct. 10, 2004) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Grace Lutheran Church, 302 E. Fourth St. in Hanlontown, with the Rev. Kris Snyder officiating. Military honors will be conducted by members of Clear Lake V.F.W. at the church. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Harold Richard Skilbred was born Jan. 9, 1926, in Buffalo Center, the son of John Jr. and Clara Annette (Holland) Skilbred.
He attended Grant No. 6 country school. He moved to Oregon became a welder and built ships.
He enlisted in the United States Army in April of 1944. He was honorably discharged in October of 1947.
He was in the Reserves when he was called back for the Korean Conflict.
During World War II he met Karola in Munich Germany. They moved back to Forest City.
They were united in marriage Nov. 19, 1947, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Forest City. To this union four children were born.
He worked for several implement dealers in the area as a mechanic. He was a bus driver and custodian for North Central School System in Hanlontown. He retired at Winnebago Industries in Forest City.
He enjoyed playing cards and tinkering in his shop.
He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Hanlontown, Clear Lake V.F.W., and was a volunteer fireman for Hanlontown Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife, Karola Skilbred, of Hanlontown; children, Monika and her husband James Sorenson, of St. Ansgar, Loretta and her husband Gary Boller, of Blanchard, Okla., Richard and his wife Bette Skilbred, of Clear Lake, and Robin and her husband Barry Chronister, of Fertile; grandchildren,Doug and his wife Jennifer Sorenson, Cassie and her husband David Nelson, Joanna and her husband Brian Southard, Joshua and his wife Jessie Boller, Jamie Boller, Adrienne Skilbred, Jason Sheahan, Gabe and his wife Angie Sheahan, Renee and her husband Derek Gustafson, Keith Schmitz, Danielle Schmitz, Shanda and her husband Danny Boatright, and Aaron Chronister;13 great-grandchildren; brother, Darwin and his wife Doris Skilbred, of Donna, Texas; sister, Darlene James, of Mason City; sister-in-law, Traudl and her husband, Heinrich Kiefer, of Munich, Germany; along with several cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

MASON CITY — Charles J. Hogan, 68, of Fountain Hills, Ariz., formerly of Mason City, passed away Sunday (Oct. 10, 2004) in Scottsdale, Ariz. after a long battle with myasthenia gravis.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Scottsdale Family Church, 9400 Mountain View Road, Scottsdale, Ariz. Entombment will be in the Paradise Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Scottsdale, Ariz.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 pm today at the family residence, 15128 E. Vermillion Drive, Fountain Hills, Ariz. Further visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Chuck was born at Mason City, on Oct. 23, 1935, a son of Ralph J. and Lenore (Dougherty) Hogan. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in mortuary science.
He and longtime partner Al Bremer owned and operated Colonial Chapel funeral homes in Mason City, Clear Lake, Northwood, Manly and Nora Springs, and Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
Chuck moved to Arizona in 1984 and was the founder of Medico. He was active in numerous civic and philanthropic organizations. Chuck’s spirit and friendship will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Nancy, of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; a son, Michael, of San Diego, Calif.; two daughters, Ann, of Chanhassen, Minn.; Mindy, of Denver, Colo.; a sister, Mary Rose (John) Scanlon, of Minnetonka, Minn.; mother-in-law, Nedra Florer, of Clear Lake; sisters-in-law, Margaretha Hogan, of Dougherty, Janelle (Glenn) Cowan, of Anchorage, Alaska; Sandy Florer, of Anthem, Arizona, Cindy Florer, of Clear Lake; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary M. Linde was born May 17, 1927, to Alex and Helen (Kantaris) Garufis in Mason City.
On Feb. 9, 1946, she was united in marriage to Paul Bull. The couple had three children, Alex, Linda, and Mark.
Following Paul’s death, Mary married Robert Linde on Sept. 18, 1965, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
She enjoyed cooking and camping, but especially loved spending time with her family and her grandchildren.

EMMETSBURG — Funeral services for John Peter Murray, 76, will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Parish in Emmetsburg, with the Rev. Daniel Gunther officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Emmetsburg. Casket bearers will be Ryan Miller, Steve Huberty, R.J. Seefus, Sean Murray, Tom Wise and Jim Murray.
Mr. Murray died Tuesday (Oct. 12, 2004) at Parc Hall in Emmetsburg.
John Peter Murray was born on Oct. 6, 1927, in Emmetsburg, the son of Alfred and Eileen (Mulroney) Murray. He graduated from Emmetsburg Catholic High School in Emmetsburg.
He married Delores Mullaney on May 16, 1953, in Mason City.
John farmed in Great Oak Township following his wedding with Delores. He drove an egg and milk route, worked for Donahue Tire Shop in Emmetsburg and later Ken Webb Construction. He served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Holy Family Parish in Emmetsburg and the American Legion. He was a skilled tire man and woodworker and enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up. He was a proud Irishman and was not adverse to spreading a little blarney.
Survivors include his children, Sheila (Rick) Miller, of Waterloo; Peggy (John) McNally, of Emmetsburg; Mary (Jim) Tate, of Marshall, Minn.; Kay (Charlie) Wise, of Emmetsburg; Jack (Deb) Murray, of Cedar Falls; and Julie (Bob) Seefus, of LaVista, Neb.; 17 grandchildren; sister, Marg (Don) Striet, of Storm Lake; sister, Jane Murray, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and sister, Rita Murray, of Omaha, Neb.

MASON CITY — Raymond O. Overbeck, 75, of Mason City, died Monday (Oct. 11, 2004) at home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and continue on Thursday until time of services.

Ray was born Aug. 6, 1929, in Mason City, the son of Oscar and Keren (Melcher) Overbeck. He married Janith Leonard on April 4, 1953, in Mason City.
Ray served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He worked for Northwestern States Portland Cement Co. for many years, retiring in 1974 due to his health.
Ray was a member of the VFW.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cards, gardening and being with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the neighborhood kids.

TITONKA — Kathryn Lenore Kuchenreuther,
85, of Titonka, died Tuesday (Oct. 12,
2004) at the Titonka Care Center.
Memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m.
Saturday (Oct. 16, 2004) at United
Methodist Church in Clear Lake, with the
Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Inurnment

Kathryn Lenore Kuchenreuther was born
Oct. 19, 1918, in Titonka, the daughter
of William and Lenore (Mitchell) Schram.
Kathryn attended the Titonka school
system, graduating in 1936. She attended
Iowa State Teachers College. She taught
in a rural school for a short time.
She was united in marriage to Kenneth
Swan on Nov. 5, 1939, at the Methodist
church in Titonka. To this union two
children were born, Virginia and
Douglas.
They operated Swan Funeral Home in
Titonka for many years. Moving to Clear
Lake, they operated Swan Motel. Kenneth
Swan died in 1984.
She was united in marriage to Kenneth
Kuchenreuther on Dec. 3, 1987, in Clear
Lake. They lived in Clear Lake until
2000. As Kathryn’s and Kenneth’s health
began to fail, she moved to the Titonka
Care Center and he moved to Portage,
Mich., to be closer to family.
She enjoyed sewing, knitting, quilting,
cooking and baking. Staying in close
contact and being with her family
brought her great joy.
She was a lifelong member of the Titonka
and Clear Lake United Methodist
churches. She was an active church
member.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth
Kuchenreuther, of Portage, Mich.; son,
Douglas and his wife, Kay Swan, of
Sheridan, Wyo.; stepchildren, Barry and
Kenneth Jr. Kuchenreuther, and Chalice
Neubauer, all of Portage, Mich.; and
Gayle Hjortaas, of Florida; sister,
Harriet Schutter and her husband,
Herman, of Mankato, Minn.; brother,
Herbert Schram and his wife, Doris, of
Geneseo, Ill.; sister, Lois Holcomb and

ELEANOR H. KLEMESRUD
OSAGE — Eleanor Helene Ingeborg
Klemesrud, 93, of Osage and formerly of
Minneapolis, Minn., died Tuesday (Oct.
12, 2004) at Faith Lutheran Home in
Osage.
Eleanor was born Nov. 11, 1910, on the
family farm in West Cedar Township,
Mitchell County, near Nora Springs.
She was named for her mother, Ingeborg
Severina Maakestad Klemesrud, who was
also born in Iowa. Eleanor’s father,
Harald K. Klemesrud, immigrated to the
USA from Valdres, Norway, in 1866, at
the age of seven.
Eleanor was baptized on Jan. 15, 1911,
by Rev. J.A. Urness at Rock Creek
Lutheran Church, and was confirmed on
May 25, 1924, by the Rev. O.C. Myhre.
Eleanor attended West Cedar Township No.
3 rural school, graduated from Osage
High School in 1928, and continued her
education in stenography at Hamilton
Business College in Mason City.
She had a lifelong career of
housekeeping and kitchen work in many
states. Eleanor also worked at Major
Erickson Funeral Home in Mason City, and
worked as a cook at Fuller Seminary in
California.
In the 1940s, she moved to Winnetka,
Ill., and was employed at the
Hearthstone Tea Room in Evanston, Ill.
In 1951, she moved to Minneapolis,
Minn., where she was employed by the
Minneapolis Gas Co., working for 17½
years in their home service department,
retiring in 1974. After her retirement,
she was very active in mission work
through her church, St. Paul’s Lutheran
Church.
On March 16, 1999, she moved to the
Faith Lutheran Home in Osage, to be near
her family and friends, at which time
she rejoined Rock Creek Lutheran Church.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m.
Saturday at Rock Creek Lutheran Church,
3269 Foothill Ave., Osage, with the Rev.
R. Dawson Tornes officiating. Interment
will be in the Rock Creek Cemetery.
There will be visitation from 9:30 to
10:30 a.m. on Saturday before services
at the church.
She is survived by a brother, Lorin
Klemesrud of Osage; three nephews,
Robert Klemesrud and wife, Joan, of
Osage; Kent Klemesrud Daly and wife,

Klemesrud of Thompson; two nieces,
Cleone Weaverling and husband, John, of

MASON CITY — Duane E. Huff, 71, of 1615
Eighth St. S.W., died Tuesday (Oct. 12,
2004) at Good Shepherd Health Center
after a long battle with Parkinson’s,
diabetes and heart disease. He has now
gone to be with the Lord.

Duane’s name.
Duane was born on June 23, 1933, the son
of Lyle and Violetta (Adams) Huff, in
Rockwell, Iowa. He attended Bath No. 3
rural school, then graduated from
Rockwell High School in 1951.
On April 13, 1952, Duane was united in
marriage to Audrey Dyre at First United
Methodist Church in Mason City. The
couple resided southeast of Mason City.
Duane farmed with his father for many
years, along with working the sugar beet
campaign and the “Lard Room” at Decker’s
Packing Plant in Mason City.
Duane and his wife owned and operated
Huff’s Drive Inn & Coffee House in Nora
Springs for several years.
For 25 years, Duane worked for the parts
department at the John Deere Implement
until retirement at the age of 62.
After retirement, Duane purchased a
motorhome to travel the United States,
but enjoyed only four years before
medical problems caused him to not be
able to drive anymore.
Duane enjoyed playing the organ, and was
a member of the John Deere band known as
the “Partsmen Three.” He was a member of
the SPEBSQA’s River City Chorus and the
Hanford Community Church.
Survivors include, his wife, Audrey;
sons, Cliff and wife, Norma, of St.
Cloud, Minn.; Edward and wife, Wylene,
of Alvin, Texas; Fred of Mason City;
adopted grandson, Zeke; grandchildren,
Alyson, Adam, Andrea, Zachary, Brandy,
Jasmine, and Josilyn; sisters, Roberta
Wharam and husband, Jack, of
Indianapolis, Ind.; and Reva Fredin and
husband, Chet, of Waterloo; brother,
Dean Huff and wife, Helen, of Florida;
uncle, Pete Adams and wife, Gladys, of
Mason City; aunt, Nadine Berger of South

The family of Ruth Muriel McGowan has

Ruth Muriel (Hein) McGowan was born on
March 12, 1917, in Elgin, Minn., the
daughter of Theodore Alfred and Anna
(Becker) Hein. She was baptized in the
Lutheran faith in Elgin, Minn., and
reaffirmed her faith through
confirmation in the Lutheran church in
Emmetsburg.
Ruth graduated from Emmetsburg High
School in 1934. Ruth also attended the
American Institute of Business in Des
Moines and Hamilton Business College in
Mason City.
After completing her schooling she
worked for the Oliver farm equipment
company in Charles City.
Ruth moved to Clear Lake where she met
and married Keith McGowan. After their
marriage together they owned and
operated the McGowan Hardware until
1959.
In 1967, Ruth and Keith moved to
Appleton, Wis., where they managed a
motel before moving to Daytona Beach,
Fla., to manage Perry’s Ocean Edge Motel
until Keith’s illness.
Ruth worked at Embry Riddle Aeronautical
University until her retirement in 1987.
Ruth moved to Flagler Beach, Fla., and
worked part time for the Wolfe Hardware.
She enjoyed meeting people and was very
knowledgeable in the hardware business.
In 1995, Ruth moved to Plainview, Minn.,
to be closer to relatives.
She belonged to Immanuel Lutheran Church
in Plainview where she was very active
in Bible study. She also corrected
papers for the fifth and sixth grades at
the Immanuel Lutheran School. It was a
thrill for Ruth when the children came
to bring the papers and pick them up.
She usually had candy bars.
She leaves behind many dear friends in
Plainview. Ruth moved to the IOOF Home
in Mason City in July 2004. Ruth made
many special friends there among the
nurses, aides and residents.
Those left to cherish her memory are her
children, Patricia Hoyt and her husband,
Robert, of Garner; William “Bill”
McGowan and his wife, Judi, of
Urbandale; and Theodore “Ted” McGowan
and his wife, Pamela, of Huntsville,
Ala.; six grandchildren, Keri Allison,
Kelli Zimmerman, and Kirk McGowan and
his wife, Dana, all of Urbandale;
Suzanne Copas and her husband, Tim, of
Ventura; Traci McGowan (deceased), and
Jay McGowan of Huntsville, Ala.; 10
great-grandchildren, Ashley, Austin and

Jim attended school.
He began working at Armour and Co. at an
early age and continued his employment
with them until retirement. He was a
traveling superintendent for the
company.
Jim was united in marriage to Helen
(Belaus) Thomas on Aug. 24, 1933. Helen
died on Oct. 11, 1997.
He is survived by two brothers, Walter
Thomas of Dearborn, Mich.; and Joseph
Thomas and his wife, Margaret, of Mason
City; three sisters, Rose Dawson, of
Mason City, Dorothy Wass of Joplin, Mo.,
and Betty Hermanson and her husband,
Melvin, of San Diego, Calif.;

children were born. They lived
in Waverly for about four months
before moving back to Nashua.
Alice worked at Lutheran Mutual
in Waverly for a short time. She
then worked as an accountant for
Shep’s Standard Station in
Nashua and Marzen’s Standard
Station in Charles City.
She enjoyed making rugs,
camping, fishing, walking and
was an avid card player.
Her family was her first love.
She will be remembered for her
beautiful smile and outlook on

Forest City and Hanlontown, died
Tuesday (Oct. 12, 2004) at Knapp
Memorial Hospital in Weslaco,
Texas.

Darwin was born July 2, 1932, in
Forest City, Iowa, to John Jr.
and Clara Annette (Holland)
Skilbred.
He attended country schools and
worked as a farmhand until
enlisting in the U.S. Army in
July 1950. He was a veteran of
the Korean War, retiring in
August 1970.
He married Doris of Donna,
Texas, on Sept. 1, 1984.
He worked at Winnebago
Industries of Forest City,
delivering motorhomes around the
country from 1970 to 1980.
He loved talking on his C.B.
radio and was known as “The
Green Hornet.”
Darwin was park manager of
several R.V. parks in Texas and
also managed a ranch in Dinero,
Texas.
He was currently owner and
manager of his own R.V. park in
Donna, Texas, for 24 years known
as “Mesquite Haven.”
He loved traveling in his R.V.,
known as the “Tiltin Hiltin,”
during the summer months
Survivors include his beloved
wife, Doris, of Donna, Texas;
twin sister, Darlene James, of
Mason City; son, John Skilbred
and his wife, Beatrice, of Las
Vegas, Nev.; daughter, Yvonne
(Skilbred) Brown, of Fort
Pierce, Fla.; three
granddaughters; one
great-grandson; and many nieces,
and nephews; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his
parents; brother-in-law, Galyn
James, of Mason City; brother,
Harold Skilbred, of Hanlontown,
who died on Oct. 10, 2004.
He will be sadly missed!

OSAGE — Pauline Mae Thurow, 93,
of Osage, died Sunday (Oct. 3,
2004) at Muse Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit.
Memorial service will be held 11

in Osage, with the Rev. Dr. J.
Samuel Subramanian officiating.
Inurnment will be in Riverside
Cemetery, Charles City.

Pauline was born Dec 15, 1910,
in Des Moines, the daughter of
Charles Alva West and Hannah
Naomi (Johnson) West.
Pauline attended Monroe, Byron,
and Rice Grade School and
graduated from West High School,
Des Moines, in January 1928.
In high school she was a member
of the drama club and a member
of First Federated Lutheran
Church in Des Moines.
Pauline was employed by
Northwestern Bell in Des Moines,
while completing night school in
business machines until 1936,
when she resigned to marry Frank
Thurow, who operated the Dodge
Plymouth Dealership in Osage.
The couple wed on Jan. 12, 1936,
in Charles City, at the home of
his sister, Mrs. Harry O’Harrow.
Pauline took charge of the
bookkeeping and parts department
at Thurow Motors until the
business closed 35 years later.
In 1964, she joined the Home
Trust & Savings Bank as a teller
and continued there until her
retirement.
Pauline was a member of the
First United Methodist Church of
Osage. She was faithful in
worship there throughout her
lifetime.
She worked as a member of United
Methodist Women, where she held
a treasurer position on the
board, and was a member of the
Christian’s Women Club.
She was also the founding
treasurer for the Senior
Citizen’s Center and she herself
found great fellowship there
later.
Pauline enjoyed playing piano by
ear, refinishing furniture and
gardening.
She delighted in nature,
especially trees, flowers, dogs
and cats. She was also an
extraordinary seamstress for her
family and friends.
Pauline spent her last three
years at Faith Lutheran Nursing
Home.
She died in hospice care at
North Iowa Hospice Center in
Mason City following hip surgery
at Mercy Medical Center-North
Iowa.
Pauline is survived by her two
daughters, Corlene Higley of
Tulsa, Okla.; and Judy Thurow of
San Pedro, Calif.; two
grandchildren, Ken Higley of
Tulsa, Okla.; and Lynda Clements
of Denver, Colo.; and five
great-grandchildren; and several
nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her
husband; parents; brother,
Corlis; sisters, Lilian and
Clare.

Susan Eileen Cooley was born on
Oct. 9, 1942, in Forest City,
the daughter of Hale and Lucille

Church in Lake Mills.
Susan was united in marriage
with Keith Thompson in 1958, and
was blessed with two daughters,
Kathy and Jill.
Susan worked at Duffy’s
Drive-In, at the Winnebago
County Home, and most recently
at Woodvale in Albert Lea,
Minn., for 10 years.
She was a patient, tenderhearted
person who loved her family and
took great pride in her
grandchildren.
She enjoyed cooking, reading,
walking, and spending time with
friends and neighbors.

and her special friend, Doug
Block, of Emmons, Minn.; and

Wilbert “Dugan” C. Laudner, 73,

at Mercy Medical Center-North
Iowa. He resided at 380 S.

Dugan’s life will be held at 10

Dugan was born the only child of
Amos Conrad and Alberta “Gruis”
Laudner on a farm south of
Sheffield on July 29, 1931.
He attended country school in
Rockford and Swaledale,
graduating from the Swaledale
High School in 1948.
Dugan was united in marriage to
Alma Petersen at the chapel of
St. Joseph Catholic Church in
Mason City on Sept. 17, 1948. To
this union was born three sons.
He began his life-long career as
a grocer when he was 19,
purchasing his first grocery
store in North Washington, Iowa.
In 1957, he purchased a larger
store in Rockwell. After a
complete fire loss on July 4,
1974, he and his sons, Rick and
Kelly, built the present
building.
In 1994, Dugan retired and his
sons continue the ownership.
In September 2000, his grandson
Tony joined the business.
Dugan was very proud of the
three generations that have
owned and operated Dugan’s
Supermarket, LTD.
Dugan was committed to his
community and civic duties in
Rockwell and the surrounding
communities.
He was a member of the Lions
Club, Chamber of Commerce,
Rockwell Telephone Co., Rockwell
City Council, the Rockwell
Century Board, and served more
than 30 years on the volunteer
fire department.
He was a member of Sacred Heart
Parish and the Knights of
Columbus.
He enjoyed some time off
hunting, fishing, playing cards,
and especially watching his
children and grandchildren
playing sports.
Dugan is survived by his wife of
56 years, Alma, of Mason City;
his three sons, Patrick Jon and
his wife, Gretchen, of Holland,
Mich.; Rick Ray and his wife,
Audrey; and Kelly Ryan and his
wife, Deb, all of Rockwell;
seven grandchildren, Kelli Jo
and her husband, Jason Lambrix,
of Canton, Mich.; Trent Allen
Laudner, of Columbus, Ohio;
David Conrad (the fourth
generation of Conrads) Laudner
and a first year law student at
the University of Iowa, of
Rockwell; Sarah Kay Laudner, a

NEENAH, Wis. — Doris E. Kueck,
85, of Neenah, Wis., passed away
Thursday (Oct. 14, 2004).
She was born in Charles City on
June 5, 1919, the daughter of
the late Henry and Ida Elizabeth
(Eliason) Asbe. Doris graduated
from Kensett High School in
Kensett.
On Sept. 7, 1946, she married
Darwin Robert Kueck in Clear
Lake. He preceded her in death
in 1982.
During World War II, she worked
in the Portland, Ore., shipyards
as a pipewelder, and after the
war she follow-ed Darwin to
Japan where her first son,
Larry, was born.
Doris enjoyed many outdoor
activities, camping, gardening,
fishing, needlework and
knitting.
She was active in Girl Scouts,
Cub Scouts and various church
organizations. She loved
spending time with family and
her grandchildren.
She will always be remembered as
a thoughtful, loving and devoted
mother and grandmother.
Survivors include her three
sons, Larry Kueck, of Fort
Atkinson; Ronald (Patty) Kueck,
of New London; and Steven (Sue)
Kueck, of Neenah, Wis.; one
