VIRGINIA ‘GINNI’ OVERGAARD


VENTURA — Virginia “Ginni” Overgaard, 61, of 1201 E. Lake St., Ventura, died Saturday (April 24, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, after a year-long battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Ventura United Methodist Church, 10 S. Weimer Street, Ventura. Inurnment will be in the Ventura Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Memorials may be left to the Virginia Overgaard Memorial Fund.

Virginia Lucille, “Ginni”, the daughter of Gordon and Perle (Boutilier) Schubert, was born March 10, 1943, in Britt. She attended Ventura High School, graduating in 1961.

She married John Overgaard on Sept. 23, 1961, at the Ventura United Methodist Church.

Ginni worked at the Harbor Inn for thirty-one years. She owned the business for the last fifteen of those years. She enjoyed the restaurant business, and was always a gracious host to her patrons. She met so many wonderful people who became very special friends.

Ginni was a member of the Ventura United Methodist Church.

She played in several area bridge clubs, which was her passion. She loved flower gardening and bird watching, and spent countless hours enjoying both of these hobbies. She also traveled to several countries abroad, as well as, traveling throughout the United States.

Ginni’s greatest joys were her seven grandchildren. She attended countless school activities, sporting events, concerts, and grandparents’ days. She will be fondly remembered and loved by these children. She was a wonderful and very special grandmother.

Ginni is survived by her husband, John, of Ventura; four children, Renee Denny and her husband, Steve, of Garner, Bob Overgaard and his wife, Jamie, of Lakewood, Colo., Roxanne Anderson and her husband, Allen, of Williams, and Ryan Overgaard and his friend, Monica Torkelson, of Garner; and seven grandchildren, Jordan, Summer, Andrea, and Faith Anderson, Tanner and Tyler Denny, and Taylor Pesicka. Also surviving are her father, Gordon Schubert and his wife, Donna, of Algona; two brothers, Jim Schubert and his wife, Gretchen, of Huntley, Mont., and Ronald Schubert of South Bend, Ind.; one sister, Rebecca Schubert and her husband, Bob Claubaugh, of Taylors Falls, Minn.; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Perle.

NORTHWOOD — Wilfred George Braun, 81, of Northwood, formerly of St. Ansgar, died Saturday (April 24, 2004) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 308 W. Fifth St. in St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Bryon Northwick officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in St. Ansgar.

NORA SPRINGS — Margaret L. Jorgensen, 96, of Nora Springs, formerly of rural Rudd, died at the Nora Springs Care Center on Saturday (April 24, 2004), where she had been a resident for the past nine and a half years.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Rudd United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Turner officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd.

Margaret Louise (Forsyth) Jorgensen was born in Paw Paw, Ill., to Mary (Miller) Forsyth and Chris E. Forsyth on Aug. 16, 1907. She attended rural school in Floyd County and graduated from Charles City High School in 1926. She attended Cedar Falls College.

She taught in rural schools for seven and a half years including her home school Ulster No. 3, Frankenfield School and Ray Jurrens School.

On May 14, 1933, Margaret married George P. Jorgensen, and they farmed together in the Charles City area, and Rockford and Rudd Townships until the death of her husband, George, in 1972. Margaret remained on the farm until July 1994, when she established residence at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.

She enjoyed her church work as a member and chairman of the WSCS Circle and a member of the Rudd United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Heritage Club, Farm Bureau Women, 500 Card Club, Jolly Rudders Senior Citizens, Rudd Homemakers, and was an assistant 4-H leader.

She was an avid gardener, canning and freezing the garden’s yield, helped her husband in the field, enjoyed fishing, playing cards, entertaining guests for meals, crafts, and doing many other neighborly deeds.

She dearly loved her seven grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending the school activities they participated in.

Survivors include her three children and their spouses, Ronald (Gila) Jorgensen, of Rockford, Doris (Charles) Briggs, of North Port, Fla., and Harold (Marilyn) Jorgensen, of Rudd; seven grandchildren: Kirk (Kim) Briggs, of Venice, Fla., Sandra Haller, of Loveland, Colo., Bryan (Lori) Briggs, of Nokomis, Fla., Kathleen (Kevin) Smith, of Rockford, James (Debra) Jorgensen, of Charles City, Kristy (David) Chambers, of Osage, and Wendy (Steve) Fullerton, of Rockford; 20 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren, as well as many other relatives and friends.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1972; her parents; two sisters, Meta Keyes and Berdina Olson; and one brother, Wilbur Forsyth.

CLARION — Fern Margaret Blankenship, 91, of Clarion, died Saturday (April 24, 2004) at the USA Health Care Center in Clarion.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Presbyterian Church in Clarion, with Rev. Candace Adams officiating. Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

MASON CITY — Frank J. Huzl, 92, of Mason City, died Friday (April 23, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Wayside Chapel at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be two hours prior to service time at the Wayside Chapel on Tuesday.

Frank J. Huzel was born Oct. 1, 1911, the son of Frank and Frances (Jecmen) Huzl in Mason City. He attended school in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School. Frank worked for Decker’s for many years.

He was united in marriage to Joy Heard in Mason City.

Frank was a member of the Bohemian Lodge and the First United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his sons, Jack E. Huzl and wife, Linda, of Denver, Colo., and James F. Huzl and wife, Cathy, of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Emily Huzl, of Atlanta, Ga., Kara Huzl, of Denver, Colo., Angie Garris, of Silent Springs, Ark., Mike Huzl, of Charlotte, N.C., and Chad, Dustin, and Christopher Huzl, all of Denver, Colo.; a great-grandchild, Wyatt Garris, of Silent Springs, Ark., and a neice, Phyllis Murphy, of Mason City.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents; wife Joy, in 1984; two sisters, Juliea Zemanek in 1994, and Helen Huzl in 2003; brother-in-law, Tony Zemanek in 1988; and a nephew, David Murphy in 1999.

GARNER — Frances L. Benesh, 56, of Vining, Iowa, formerly of Garner, died Saturday (April 24, 2004) at her home in Vining.

Her funeral will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner with the Rev. David Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Frances Lee Benesh, the daughter of Reno and Ione (Tanner) Harms, was born July 24, 1947 at Garner.

She attended school at Garner. Following her schooling, she was employed at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

On July 5, 1969, she was married to Joseph J. Benesh at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived on the Benesh family farm west of Hayfield where they farmed together until retiring in 1996.

After Joe passed away in 1997 she continued to live on the farm until moving to Vining in 2001.

She is survived by her six brothers and a sister, Ernest Harms of Garner, Howard Harms and wife, Sharon, of Britt, June Harms of Albert Lea, Minn., Harley Harms and wife, Julie, of Garner, Duane Harms of Garner, George Harms of Boone and August Harms and wife, Jan, of Richland Center, Wis.; a special friend, Ted Mikarovski of Vining; and a brother-in-law, Ron Monson of Clear Lake.

Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, on Oct. 7, 1997; her parents; a sister, Grace Monson; and a niece, Brenda Sue Monson.

JOPLIN, Mo. — Pamela S. Howard, 46, of Joplin, Mo., died Sunday (April 25, 2004) after a long illness.

Pam was born July 27, 1957, in Mason City, Iowa. She moved to Joplin in 1993 from St. Charles, Mo. She was a supervisor for the Joplin Workshop Inc.

She was a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Wellness Group of Joplin.

She married Nick Howard, April 25, 1981, in Mason City. He survives.

MASON CITY — Ruth K. Webb, 87, of 150 S. Grove Ave. died Sunday (April 25, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Harry Koelker, officiating. Burial will be held 1:30 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Plymouth.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, where a Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary will be held at 7 p.m. with a scriptural wake service immediately following.

Ruth Kathryn, the daughter of John Patrick and Marguerite (Helm) Nalan, was born Nov. 11, 1916, in Mason City. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1934.

She was married to John Edward Dorsey in 1936. He died in 1942.

She then married Thomas R. Webb in 1962, in Le Claire, Iowa.

She worked at the Hanford Hotel for 10 years, then she worked with the YWCA for 10 years in Mason City and then for 20 years in Muscatine, Iowa, retiring as executive director.

She touched the lives and influenced many during her years at the YWCA. After retiring she did volunteer work in Muscatine.

Her motto being “She who shuts her heart to the cry of others will herself call and not be heard”.

She served on the board of the United Way, Family Resources, Big Brother/Big Sister, the Muscatine Art Council, St. Mary’s Parish Council, and the Muscatine County Democrats, where she was treasurer for 20 years.

She spent many years volunteering for Voluntary Action, the Festival of Trees, Samaritans and Salvation Army for 20 years doing the Christmas registration and bell ringing, as well as many other activities of the Army.

While in Muscatine, she was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the St. Mary’s Guild, the Women’s Guild, the Salvation Army, Business and Professional Women, where she served the organization as state president from 1962-1964 on the National Resolution Committee.

In Mason City, she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was also a member of Catholic Daughters of The Americas, Court Joan of Arc No. 152, where she served as a past Regent. She also held the position of Grand Regent and District Deputy.

She was a member at the Senior Citizens Center, GGG’s, Grams, and Parish Life Young at Heart of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Most recently, Ruth volunteered at the Mason City City Hall. Ruth received many, many plaques and awards for her volunteer work.

Ruth is survived by two sons James Dorsey and his wife, Janet, of Mason City, and Jon Patrick and his wife Barb of Greeley, Colo., one step-son, Thomas Webb and his wife, Carolyn, of Spokane, Wash.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Merilayne Muth and Valoyce Cooper and her husband, Walter, all of Mason City, and Lucretia Gourley and her husband, Phillip, of Yuma, Ariz.; one brother, Jerry Nalan, also of Yuma, Ariz.; and a special friend, Kathryn Espinosa of Mason City. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Pauline Nalan of Sheffield; Barbara Nalan of Grand Rapids, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; one son, Darrell Dorsey; three brothers, John, Clayton, and Norvard Nalan.

RODNEY HENRY DREWES


WEST UNION — Funeral services for Rodney Henry Drewes, 88, of West Union, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in West Union, with the Rev. Dr. Duane R. Lindberg, officiating. Interment will be in West Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Rodney Henry Drewes, son of John and Verna (Grafenberg) Drewes was born Dec. 12, 1915, in rural Castalia, Iowa. He graduated from West Union High School where he enjoyed playing basketball.

On April 12, 1939, Rod was united in marriage to Gertrude (Gert) Koester at the St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado. Soon afterward, they began farming near West Union where they lived and farmed their entire life.

He spent many days not only farming and rearing a family of four sons, but also was involved in the community, church, school, Farm Bureau, Rural Electric, 4-H and Republican political activities.

He was a fair board member and president, lifelong member of Fayette County Farm Bureau and was recently recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Rod served four consecutive terms as president of the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives. He was active with the area 4-H organization and enjoyed the involvement he shared with his sons and wife in many cattle showings.

He served on the North Fayette School Board as member and president. In 1964 Rodney ran for state senator, a year that proved to be unlucky for Republicans nationwide — the year that Barry Goldwater ran for president.

Family and friends were important to Rod and he reminisced many times of participating in the “39’ers” group made up of several local couples who were married in 1939.

Rodney was a lifetime Lutheran Church member and served as church council president at Zion Lutheran Church and later played a role in the development of Redeemer Lutheran Church in West Union.

Rodney’s death occurred April 24, 2004 in his home on the family farm. Preceding him in death was his wife, Gertrude on June 30, 2000, and his parents.

Those left to cherish his memory are his four sons, Steven and Olivia of West Union, Douglas of Versailles, Ky., Vaughn and Joann of Forest City, and Kevin and Martha of Garfield, Ark.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his sister, Irene Gross, of West Union; and several other relatives and friends.

LUTHER LESTER TATE JR.


CLARION — Luther Lester Tate Jr. was received by the Lord on Saturday (April 24, 2004) in the company of his family and friends at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City.

Memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the First Lutheran Church in Clarion, with the Rev. Gary Boen officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

Luther was born unto Anna E. Subject and Luther L. Tate Sr. on Feb. 8, 1931.

Raised in Clarion, he often spent summers with his Uncle Virgil and Aunt Ruby Tate on their farm in Renwick, Iowa.

Luther attended Clarion Pubic Schools and was a member of the track team.

On July 26, 1949, he entered the United States Army and earned his high school diploma in the military.

Luther served with the 16th Infantry Regiment and was honorably discharged at the rank of private first class on Nov. 15, 1952.

In the mid 1950s he was married to Margaret Erickson. To this union two children, Diane and Robert, were born.

In 1962, he married Leona Anderson. They had one child, Jeanette.

Luther spent his civilian life working in various occupations, including truck driving, railroading, construction, and operating a feed mill.

He retired in September 1992 as a weather observer for Weather Data Services at the airport in Mason City.

When Luther’s health began to decline earlier this spring, he left his home in Meservey for USA Health Care Center in Clarion.

He quickly accepted the care center as a second home, The staff and residents became his second family in the six short weeks he resided there.

In addition to his children, those blessed to have shared his life include his granddaughter, Heather Nelson of Roland; his great-grandson, Gabriel Nelson of Roland; and his sister, Shirley Covington of Goodell.

OSAGE — Gerald “G.T.” Scheer, 76, died Tuesday (April 27, 2004) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Gerald was born May 1, 1927, in Hamburg, N.D., the son of Elmer and Johanna (Jordan) Scheer. He received his diploma from Visitation High School in Stacyville.

Gerald served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the destroyer U.S.S. James E. Kyes.

He married Mary Schumacher on July 19, 1947, at Stacyville. They lived in Estherville and Pipestone, Minn., returning to Osage in 1965.

Gerald retired from White Farm in Charles City.

He was a member of Osage American Legion Post 278, and of Osage V.F.W. Post 7920.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, family and friends.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Inurnment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278 and Osage V.F.W. Post 7920.

After the services, a time of fellowship and lunch will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Osage.

Maurice Lee Lines was born Sept. 18, 1930, in rural Ulster Township, Floyd County, a son of Henry Charles and Clara Anna (Schafer) Lines, and died Monday (April 26, 2004) at his home in rural Marble Rock.

He received his education at the Marble Rock Public School, graduating in 1948. While in high school and following graduation he was a baseball catcher for both the Marble Rock and Rockford town teams. He even tried out for the minor leagues with the Chicago White Sox.

On Jan. 5, 1951, he entered the United States Navy, serving during the Korean conflict.

Following his honorable discharge on Aug. 12, 1954, he returned home to Marble Rock, where he farmed with his father and brother before starting out on his own.

He was united in marriage to Carole Doreen Spurgeon in June 1955. To this union were born three children.

Maurice served as Union Township Clerk since 1966, and was a life member of the Floyd County Farm Bureau, having served on its board and several committees. He was a member of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association.

He was currently Commander of Stroud Gates Post 387 American Legion of Marble Rock.

On Sept. 27, 1985, he was united in marriage to Dorothy (Paulus) Heffron at Zion Lutheran Church in Rockford. Since 1995, they wintered in Mercedes, Texas.

Maurice was an avid pool player who played in several leagues in the area.

He enjoyed playing cards and cribbage.

He will be remembered for all the jokes he loved to tell and the jokes he played on others.

Living family members include his loving wife, Dorothy, of Marble Rock; his children, Terri (Jim) Engels of Rockford, Sandi (Carl) Snyder of Vernal, Utah, and Randy Lines of Marble Rock; three step-children, Deb Jacobs and Cherie (James) Merritt, all of Osage, and Julie (Larry) Ackley of Carpenter; five grandchildren, Eric, Marc, and Gregory Engels, Vicki and Derek Lines; seven step-grandchildren, Trisha (Jayme) Sedars, Christy (Josh) Willis, Shawn (Alison) Newhouse, Todd Krones, Eric, Andrew, and Savanna Young; eight step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Lavina Morphew of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.

He leaves to join his parents, brother Walter, and step-daughter, Kathie McCready.

OSAGE — Alice Ferne Hockens, 92, of Osage, died Monday (April 26, 2004) at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Ferne was born on April 22, 1912, near Perry, Iowa, the daughter of Earl and Minne E. (Harrold) Crannell. She graduated from Perry High School.

Ferne received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, and later her bachelor of arts degree from Upper Iowa University.

She taught in the Little Cedar Consolidated Schools and later at Pella, Iowa.

During World War II, she moved to California, where she worked at a Lockheed aircraft plant.

Following World War II, Ferne was united in marriage to Charles F. Hockens on Nov. 22, 1945, in Phoenix, Ariz.

They returned to Little Cedar, where they engaged in farming, and where Ferne resumed her teaching career in the Riceville school system.

Music was very important to Ferne. She was involved with the Mitchell County Chorus, church choir, was an organist, and gave piano lessons.

She was a member of the Cedar Valley Retired School Personnel.

Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Little Cedar United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jay Amundson officiating. Interment will be in the Little Cedar Cemetery.

BRITT — Elsie Leerar, 82, of Britt, passed away Tuesday (April 27, 2004) at her rural Britt farm home.

Funeral service for Elsie Leerar will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Lutheran Church in Britt, with the Rev. Dr. John Meyer and Janelle Siffring, AiM, officiating. Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Elsie, the daughter of Carl and Laura Olson Hampe, was born on July 1, 1921, on the family farm near Crystal Lake.

She was baptized in the Upper Flat Evangelical Free Church in rural Britt. Elsie attended school in Britt and later was employed helping area farm families.

Elsie was united in marriage with Fred Leerar on April 11, 1942, in Bethany, Mo. In 1947, the couple moved to their farm southeast of Britt, where they raised their family.

Elsie continued to live on the farm until the time of her death. She loved the farm and enjoyed caring for her dog and cats. She also enjoyed gardening and caring for her many flowers.

Elsie loved spending time with her family, and enjoyed making quilts, blankets and afghans for them.

She was an accomplished baker and made the best homemade bread and cinnamon rolls.

Elsie also enjoyed bowling and fishing.

She attended the First Lutheran Church in Britt and was a member of the VFW.

Elsie is survived by two daughters, Betty Bublitz of Marion, and Patricia and her husband, Perry Sutton, of Waterloo; three sons, Dick Leerar and his wife, Judy, Robert Leerar and his wife, Barbara, and Craig Leerar and his wife, Marlene, all of Britt; 16 grandchildren, Brian, Randy, Nicole, Jennifer, Christopher, Ethan, Kristy, Kari, Stephanie, Bobby Jo, Angie, Joe, Becca, Nicholas, Michelle and Paul; 19 great-grandchildren; one brother, Jim Hampe and his wife, Della, of Britt; several nieces, nephews and her loving dog, Poppy.

She had lived in Elgin, Ill., and spent the last 16 years residing in Mason City.

Barbara was a devoted, loving and nurturing mother, grandmother and sister to her family. Paramount to Barbara was her love and devotion to her family.

Some of Barbara’s favorite leisure activities and interests included listening to country music, solving “word search” puzzles, bird watching, and her special relationships with her many friends.

Barbara will be missed dearly by all who have shared in her life.

She married Jack Q. Larson and moved to Minneapolis for three years before moving to North Iowa in 1949. Jack and Betty had four children, Linda, Diane, Cindy, and Bruce.

Betty worked as a nursing assistant at the I.O.O.F. Home, and then worked for the Mason City school system in the printing office.

Betty’s hobbies included card games, bingo, and telling stories to her family.

She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Mason City.

Norma Jean was born Sept. 25, 1932, in Woden, Iowa.

In 1955, she joined the staff of Thorsen, Thorsen, Madson, a Forest City architectural firm, as office manager.

In 1956, she became the assistant organist for Immanuel Lutheran Church, and in 1970 she became senior organist and director of music.

In 1986, she moved to Rochester, where she was employed by TSP architects and engineers until she re-tired.

Norma traveled extensively and enjoyed needlework and concerts.

She is survived by two sisters, Irene (Stanley) Attleson, of Rochester, and Viola Farland, of Mankato, Minn.; two brothers, Verne (Stella) Boomgarden, of Humboldt, Iowa, and Bernard (Claudine) Boomgarden, of Tuscon, Ariz.

CLEAR LAKE — Beatrice “Bea” Saucke 84, of 100 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, passed away unexpectedly Saturday (April 24, 2004) at home.

Beatrice M. Hanson was born Aug. 2, 1919, the daughter of Adolph and Esther (Pearson) Hanson.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and was a graduate of the American Institute of Business in Des Moines.

She married Ted Saucke on June 28, 1942, at Zion Lutheran Church in Gowrie. They owned a retail hardware business in Clear Lake for many years.

As an executive legal secretary, local attorneys Thorkel Sondrol Sr., Thorkel Sondrol Jr., Mark Schoeller and most recently Matt Berry, employed her.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, and belonged to Praise Circle.

She was humbled when being honored as Mother of the Year in 1972, and as Legal Secretary of the Year in 1980.

Hobbies included being Ted’s Cessna co-pilot, riding scooters and being a test cook for Betty Crocker Kitchens.

Her surviving family includes daughters, Linda (Tom) Sage of Mason City, Lois (Serge) Saucke-Lacelle of Montreal/Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, and Rhonda Saucke of Clear Lake. Her grandchildren are Renay (Tom) Nestvedt of Mason City, Matt (Jessy) Sage of Chicago, Ill., and Erin, Amy and Eric Saucke-Lacelle, all of Montreal/Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada; and Tyler and Justis Nestvedt of Mason City are her great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by two sisters, Rosalie (Earl) Grindheim of Richfield, Minn., and Florine (Ed) Gilbertson of Minneapolis; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were parents; a brother-in-law, Chuck Swanson; and most recently her husband, Ted, last month.

Cecil Joseph McMonagle was born Aug. 19, 1915, in Rockwell, to Joseph D. and Capitola (Yarrow) McMonagle.

He received his education in Rockwell public schools, graduating in 1933.

Cecil furthered his education by attending Hamilton Business College in Mason City.

On June 14, 1941, Cecil was united in marriage to Margaret A. Treston at the United Methodist Church in Rockwell.

Cecil served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, enlisting in 1942 at Fort Snelling, Minn.

Cecil spent most his time overseas in Africa, Italy, France and Germany. He was honorably discharged after three years in 1945. Cecil had also received a Bronze Star.

He was employed by the Chicago Northwest Railway for several years, and then worked for Armour and Co. in Mason City as the assistant paymaster for 25 years, retiring in 1975.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a lifelong member of the Elks Lodge, both in Mason City, and the American Legion in Rockwell.

Cecil loved all sports, especially playing and watching baseball.

In their later years, the couple truly enjoyed spending time together and fishing at their cabin in Ash River, Minn., on Lake Kabetogama in northern Minnesota.

They spent winters during their retirement years in Pensecola Beach, Fla., where Cecil enjoyed golfing.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Cecil’s life are his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Margaret A. McMonagle of Mason City; although Cecil and Margaret did not have children of their own, the couple enjoyed special relationships, with their nieces and nephew, Odette (Henry) Woodruff of Vancouver, Wash., Sherry Treston and Carolyn Stanek, both of Hinsdale, Ill., Shirley (Vance) Severson of Waterloo, Sheila (Jay) Boyle of Vancouver, Wash., and Dr. Ronald (Kay) Hansen of Phoenix, Ariz. He is also survived by several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Cecil was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Vivian Hansen; a niece, Karen Hansen; and a nephew, Russell Hansen.
