ELLSWORTH B. TEVIS


MASON CITY — Ellsworth B. Tevis, 73, of 20793 260th St., died Sunday (April 18, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit after a courageous fight battling a brain tumor.

A church worship service will be held in Ellsworth’s honor at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Remnant Seventh Day Adventist Church, Independent, 24 Third St. N.W., Nora Springs. His son, Dennis, will give the message. There will be no visitation. His body was cremated.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at their home.

Memorials may be given to the Ellsworth B. Tevis Memorial Fund.

Ellsworth was born June 1, 1930, in Mason City, the son of Price and Esther (Bauer) Tevis. He graduated from Nora Springs High School.

Ellsworth married Mary C. Hanson Sept. 5, 1959, in Mason City. He was a long time farmer in the area and did carpentry work as well.

He enjoyed helping his neighbors and friends.

Ellsworth was an elder at the Remnant Seventh Day Adventist Church, Independent, in Nora Springs, since it was organized in 1986.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Tevis, of Mason City; two sons, Dennis Tevis and Douglas Tevis, both of Mason City; brother, Marlan Tevis, of Batavia, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Evan “Jake.”

WALTER V. NIEMEYER


SHELL ROCK — Walter V. Niemeyer, 71, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died Monday morning (April 19, 2004) at his home of natural causes.

Walter was born on Aug. 11, 1932, in Wycoff, Minn., the son of Walter and Verna (Chinnow) Niemeyer.

Walter attended school in Waltham, Minn., through the eighth grade.

Following school he helped his grandfather on the farm until being drafted during the Korean War.

He served in the Army from 1953 until being honorably discharged in 1955.

After the war, Walter moved to Clarksville, where he worked at Chamberlin’s Manufacturing and Clay Manufacturing.

Walter later began working as a mechanic in Shell Rock for several years until he went to work for the Rock Island Railroad and the Iowa Northern Railroad, where he worked for 20 years.

After retiring from the railroad in 1991, Walter enjoyed his free time collecting radios.

Walter enjoyed boating, collecting radios, his two dogs, and especially spending time with his family and friends.

Walter is survived by his wife, Grace, of Shell Rock; one son, Michael and his wife, Erin, of Osage; one granddaughter, Brianna, of Osage; and one sister, Donna Hughes of Aplington.

He is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Nashua, with Pastor Keith Tomlinson officiating.

HOLMES PATRICK PEDELTY


EDINA, Minn. — Holmes Patrick Pedelty, 67, passed away Monday (April 19, 2004) at his home in Edina, Minn.

Holmes Pedelty was born on Aug. 9, 1936, in Dougherty. He was raised in Clear Lake, where he lived most of his life. He and his wife, Jane Pedelty, moved to Edina in 1983.

Holmes was united in marriage to Jane Duesenberg on Oct. 27, 1956, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clear Lake.

Mr. Pedelty was a managing partner of the North Iowa Livestock Exchange in Garner, as well as the Farmers Auction Market in Eldora. Holmes’ agricultural reports and commentaries were carried daily by 15 radio stations throughout the Midwest, and his weekly market analysis and commentary was carried on KIMT television in Mason City.

During his career, Holmes delivered hundreds of speeches to farmers, businessmen, and consumer groups.

He also taught Accounting and Fundamentals of Financial Management for Buena Vista College on the North Iowa Area Community College Campus from 1984-1985.

Mr. Pedelty served on the Board of Directors of Norwest Bank in Mason City, and was a member of Corn Belt Beef Council, American Society of Agricultural Consultants, the Grade Standards and Labeling Committee of the National Cattleman’s Association, the Advisory Committee of the Iowa Cattleman’s Association and chaired the Iowa Governor’s Beef Task Force and the Iowa Beef Industry Council’s Marketing Committee.

Mr. Pedelty earned his MBA from the University of Iowa.

Holmes served on several community organizations in Iowa and Minnesota, including the Board of Directors of Magnum Chorum, St. Olaf University’s Alumni Choir.

He also served on several committees and organizations in Clear Lake, including co-chairing the committee to acquire land for Handicap Village (now Opportunity Village), and was a member of the St. Patrick’s Church Board of Education and a lay member of the Clear Lake Interfaith Council.

Holmes is survived by his wife, Jane Pedelty; and three children, daughter, Lori Pedelty and her husband, Mark Ormond; son, Kevin and his wife, Joan Pedelty; son, Mark and his wife, Karen Miksch; and seven grandchildren, Adam, Jason, Taylor and Blake Ormond, and Veronica, Griffin, and Samantha Pedelty.

Holmes was preceded in death by his father, Donald Ross Pedelty; mother, Mary Electa Pedelty-kelley; and two brothers, J and Thomas.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at the Church of Saint Patrick, Valley View and Gleason Road in Edina.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Gill Brothers Southwest Funeral Chapels, 5801 Lyndale Ave. S., Minneapolis, and one hour prior to the mass on Thursday at the church.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Thomas Wik, 67, of Eden Prairie, Minn., died Sunday (April 18, 2004).

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.

CARROLL L. ‘BUZZ’ KING


MARBLE ROCK — Funeral service for Carroll L. “Buzz” King, 78, of 1330 290th St., Marble Rock, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock, with Pastor Kenneth Kent and Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Marble Rock.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock, where there will be public masonic service at 7:30 p.m., conducted by Cornerstone Lodge 251 A.F. & A.M. of Marble Rock.

Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.

Carroll Lee King was born July 16, 1925, in Waterloo, a son of Clark Leonard and Ruth Amelia (Beyers) King, and died Sunday (April 18, 2004) Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

He received his education in the rural Scott Township schools and graduated from Marble Rock High School in 1944.

As a young man he worked on the family farm and following his marriage he farmed on his own.

On Jan. 26, 1946, he was united in marriage to Edna Alena Arends at the Lutheran parsonage in Greene. To this union were born six children.

He worked at Oliver-White Farm Equipment from 1958 until his retirement in 1984. He continued to farm until his death.

Buzz loved to farm and took great pride in raising his cattle. He received many awards for soil conservation and organic farming.

Buzz loved life and his family. He was always happy and had a smile on his face. His cheerful smile, friendly disposition and kind words to all will be remembered by those who knew him.

His wife and children were the most important things in his life.

He was a 50-year member of Cornerstone Lodge 251 A.F. & A.M. of Marble Rock, and was affiliated with the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock.

Living family members include his loving wife of 58 years, Edna, of Marble Rock; three daughters, Sharon King and Richard Abbas, and Shirley (Charlie) Mihm, all of Denver, and Sandra (Kevin) Sprung of Osage; three sons, Robert (Caroline) King of Rockford, Dennis King of Charles City, and Douglas (Mavis) King of Marble Rock; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dottie (Ervin) Solberg of Floyd and Geraldine Vater of Alton, Mo.; and one brother, Leonard King of Charles City.

Buzz leaves to join his parents, two sisters, Katie Davis and Minerva Dralle; and one brother George King.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Carroll L. “Buzz” King Memorial Fund in care of the family.

MASON CITY — Lloyd O. “Louie” Lugg, 78, of 4 Third St. N.W., died Monday (April 19, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 329 E. State St., Mason City, with the Rev. Paul D. Finger officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with full military honors by the Clear Lake VFW Post 4868.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City.

Memorials may be left to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 329 E. State St., Mason City, in Louie’s honor.

Lloyd O. Lugg, the son of Ray and Anna (Dierich) Lugg, was born Aug. 2, 1925, in Parkers Prairie, Minn.

He was adopted by his aunt and uncle, Charles and Julia Lugg, at two weeks of age.

He was baptized and confirmed at the Mona Lutheran Church in Mona.

He attended school in Osage and Mona, graduating from Lyle, Minn.

After graduation he worked on a ranch in Fort Denton, Mont.

Louie entered the United States Army in December 1944. His training lead him to Texas.

Home on leave, he married Dorothy Norcross on April 17, 1945. Upon returning from his leave, he was relocated to the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged as a technical sergeant in November 1946.

Upon returning from the service he worked for John Deere in Waterloo, later moving back to Mason City where he drove truck for 35 years before retiring in 1987.

Louie enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing trips to Canada and wintering with Dorothy in Texas.

Louie was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Mason City and the Clear Lake VFW.

Louie is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Mason City; two sons, Steven Lugg and his wife, Paulette, of Ventura, and Dan Lugg and his wife, Doris, of Rockford; two grandchildren, Brian Lugg, of Cedar Falls and Sarah Lugg of Ventura. Also surviving are three sisters, Irene Baird of Boulder City, Nev., Edna Merriman of Houston, Texas, and Jeanette Riley of McAllen, Texas; one brother-in-law, Elmo Vivian of Weslaco, Texas; one sister-in-law, Bettye Lugg, of Mercedes, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by both sets of parents; one sister, Adeline Vivian; two brothers, Arthur and Raymond; one sister-in-law, Mae Lugg; and three brothers-in-law.

PAULETTE SUE WEISS-KROGSTAD


PLOVER, Wis. — Paulette Sue Weiss-Krogstad, 54, of 3111 Wilson Ave. in Plover, Wis., formerly of Marshfield, Wis., died Monday (April 19, 2004) at St. Michaels Hospital.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Jensen Funeral Home in Plover.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Jensen Funeral Home in Plover and from 10:30 a.m. until time of services.

Paulette Sue was born Nov. 19, 1949, in Mason City, to Joseph and Marion (Johnson) Weiss.

She married Roger Krogstad on Dec. 27, 1968. They were married for 22 years.

Paulette worked for Trail Guard. Later she worked at Joerns/Sunrise Medical.

She liked reading, cooking and collecting movies.

She is survived by one daughter, Holly Krogstad, of Plover, Wis.; three sons, Christopher (Joy) Krogstad, of Chippewa Falls, Wis., Justin Krogstad, of Sheboygan, Wis., and Micah (Mary Beth) of Fort Carson, Colo.; her mother, Marion Weiss, of Marshalltown; three brothers, Robert (Dixie) Weiss, of Marshalltown, James (Linda) Weiss, of Tucson, Ariz., and Joseph (Jackie) Weiss Jr., of Atlanta, Ga.; three grandchildren, Freesia, Eliah, and Sirach. She is further survived by Oscar, the bird, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Kathryn; and brother-in-law, Dick DeRoos; and her father, Joseph Weiss.

Special thanks to the oncology department at St. Michaels Hospital. Also Angela from Ministries Hospice Services and all the supportive friends and family.

She was an inspiration to us all. She will be forever loved and dearly missed.

NORTHWOOD — John Lawrence Havlik, 90, of Northwood, died Wednesday (April 21, 2004) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church, 309 N. Ninth St. in Northwood, with Pastors Philip and Marilyn Peters officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood, and one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the church.

The family of John Lawrence Havlik has requested that memorial contributions be made to the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, or to the Northwood Public Library in his memory.

John Lawrence Havlik was born on May 18, 1913, the son of Paul and Anna (Jurisek) Havlik in Chicago, Ill.

He attended grade school in Ventura and graduated from Britt High School.

John farmed most of his life in the Northwood area.

He was united in marriage to Marian Brandt on May 18, 1984, in Melvin, Iowa.

His great love of farming and gardening were continued until his death.

He will be remembered for his gorgeous gladiolas, his generous heart and will, and will be sadly missed by his friends and family.

John also enjoyed going to the Corner Post in Northwood, visiting with his many friends, and traveling both in the United States and overseas.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Marian Havlik, of Northwood; a daughter, Karen Barnett and her husband, Duane, of Windsor, Colo.; a son, Jack Havlik, of Longview, Texas; three grandchildren, Dan Starkson and his wife, Kellie, of Wheatland, Wyo., and their children, Tyler and Kaity; Scott Starkson and his wife, Julie of Loveland, Colo., and their children, Scott Mykel, Matt, and Billy; and Steven Starkson and his wife Carrie of Johnstown, Colo.; a step-daughter, Donna Unahalekhaka of Mountain City, Tenn.; and a step-son, Rod Brandt and his wife, Cathy, of Forest City; two sisters, Evelyn Christians of Garner, and Mildred Wetterling of Carroll; as well as other relatives and many friends.

LAKE MILLS — Peggy A. Budach, 53, of Lake Mills, died Wednesday morning (April 21, 2004) at her home in Lake Mills.

Memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Lake Mills, with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating.

Visitation with the family will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. today at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 E. Main Street in Lake Mills.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be designated to your local Hospice unit.

Peggy Ann (Tonne) Budach was born on March 21, 1951, at Fairmont, Minn., the daughter of Edward and Lydia (Crousore) Tonne. She attended and graduated from Granada High School in Granada, Minn., in 1969.

On March 6, 1971, Peggy was united in marriage with Kenneth Budach at St. Casmir Church in Wells, Minn. The couple moved to Lake Mills in 1972.

Peggy enjoyed fishing, cooking and spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Ken Budach; four sons, Chris Budach and his fiancee Christine Greiman, Craig Budach, Brian Budach and Jill Nelson, and John Budach and Elida Soto and their children, Brett, Dominique, and Raven, all of Lake Mills; her mother, Lydia Tonne, of Granada; brother, Eugene (Bud) Tonne of Granada; sister, Janice Shumski of Granada; sister-in-law, Diane Dittrich and her husband, Dan, of Albert Lea, Minn.; brother-in-law, Lyle Budach, of Wells; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Edward; and her brother, Ron.

RUTHVEN — George H. Lickteig, 80, of Ruthven, formerly of Wesley, died Friday (April 16, 2004) at Health Park Medical Center in Fort Myers, Fla.

CHARLES CITY — Martin Ashley, 59, of 1180 170th St., Charles City, died Tuesday (April 20, 2004) at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City due to complications of cancer.

Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City. Monsignor John Hemann, pastor of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Nashua, will officiate. Burial will be in Deerfield Cemetery rural Colwell.

CLEAR LAKE — John Leonard Tatro, 54, 10284 300th St., Mason City, passed away Tuesday (April 20, 2004) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, 502 Second Ave. N. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jan Burnett and the Rev Jeff Ungs officiating. Interment will be held at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

The family would like to encourage everyone to dress casually for the service and visitation. Flannel shirts and blue jeans would be loved by John.

Memorials may be given to the John Tatro Memorial Fund.

John was born April 30, 1949, in Concordia, Kan., the son of Leonard and Dorothy (Barker) Tatro. His family moved to the Mason City when John was young.

He attended and graduated from Mason City High School in 1968 and went to NIACC for one year.

John married Jean Prestholt on June 20, 1976, at the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake. To this union one son, Chuck, was born.

He worked at Armour and Co. and then Opportunity Village for 20 years.

Boy Scouts were very important to John. He was a former scout master and assistant scout master for Troop 30 of Clear Lake.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing, woodworking, the Boy Scouts and mountain hiking. He enjoyed spending time at the Boundary Waters and anything to do with nature.

John was a lifetime member of the NRA and the Boy Scouts.

He was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church of Clear Lake.

MASON CITY — Genevieve A. (Callahan) Wardell, 75, of South Sioux City, Neb., formerly of Osage and Mason City, died unexpectedly Friday (April 16, 2004) at her home.

Her funeral was held on Wednesday, April 21, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux City, with Father Timothy Hogan officiating. She was buried at Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, April 20, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City.

She was born April 4, 1929, in Osage, the daughter of Gerald and Ann (Connell) West.

She grew up in Osage and Mason City, graduating from Mason City High School in 1947. She attended Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, Texas, and the University of Iowa.

She married Patrick Callahan in 1949, and later married Lyle Wardell in 1966 in Sioux Falls, S.D. He died in December 2001 in Sioux City.

She worked for the Northwestern Bell Telephone for several years and then worked in the communications office of the Sioux City Police Department for many years.

She was a member of the Catholic faith.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, sewing, crocheting, reading, golfing and bowling. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

She is survived by one daughter, Christina Alvano and her husband, Michael, of Omaha, Neb.; four sons, Matthew Callahan, of Greeley, Colo., Mark Callahan, and his wife, Michele, of Sioux City, Michael Callahan, of Huntsville, Ala., and Jack Wardell and his wife, Holly, of South Sioux City, Neb.; one brother, James West, of Sioux City; two sisters, Nancy Noonan, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Sally Musco, of Chico, Calif.; 13 grandchildren, Michael, Casey and Amy Alvano, Meagan, Ian, Lindsay, David, Alex, Bentley and Westin Callahan, Cody, and Jordyn Wardell, and Michael Paul Callahan; one great-grandson, Kaleb Callahan.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

GLADYS A. (KRUGER) GRANT


OSAGE — Gladys A. (Kruger) Grant, 82, of Osage, died Thursday (April 22, 2004) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Gladys was born April 25, 1921, in Worth County near Grafton, the daughter of Alvin and Esther (Walk) Kruger.

She attended rural schools, Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls and received her B.A. Degree at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

She taught elementary education, art and home economics for 27 years.

Gladys was united in marriage to George Grant on Aug. 8, 1948 in Manly. They lived in various communities in Iowa and Minnesota.

They moved to Osage in 1980. George died in 1988.

Gladys taught Sunday School for many years. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran church.

Her hobbies included anything creative with a brush and paint, also whatever a needle and thread can produce. Many of her pictures are displayed in family homes.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Grafton Cemetery.

There will be visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, and one hour before services on Monday at the church.

She is survived by four sisters, Dora (David) Runyon of Council Bluffs, Ruth (Philip) Erdmann, of Osage, Clarice (Robert) Wilde, of Osage, and Deanna (Gary) Sande of St. Paul, Minn.; four brothers, the Rev. Harold (Jacqueline) Kruger, of Geneseo, N.Y., Edward (Maxine) Kruger, of Grafton, the Rev. Robert Kruger of Rock Island, Ill., and Allen Kruger and special friend, Loretta, of Morrisville, Mo.; one brother-in-law, James R. Davis of Mason City; two sisters-in-law, Juanita Kruger, of Northwood, and Rose Marie Kruger, of Northwood; and 24 nieces and nephews.

He was a student at Iowa State College.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Latimer.

He belonged to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church LYF church group and the Iowa State Ecology Club. He was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity at Iowa State University and a member of the Marion Junior Farmers 4-H club in Latimer. He was also a member of Franklin County Pheasants Forever.

He enjoyed hunting and the outdoors.

He is survived by his mother, Ida Fahrmann, of Latimer; his father, Dean Fahrmann, of Hampton; one brother, Paul Fahrmann, of Latimer; his maternal grandmother, Virginia Williams, of Danville; and aunts and uncles.

MASON CITY — The Rev. Clifton Luther Bruland, 86, of Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City, died Thursday (April 22, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Jim Magelssen officiating. A private family burial service, with military honors by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association, will take place Tuesday at the West Fork Cemetery in rural Sheffield.

The family of the Rev. Clifton Luther Bruland has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Waldorf College Scholarship Fund, or to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City, in his memory.

Cliff was born Aug. 10, 1917, in Velva, N.D., the second of four children.

His family moved to Portland, Ore., in 1926, where his parents, the Rev. Peter O. and Flora Bruland, modeled a life of service and ministry.

Peter and Flora established Lutheran Welfare, which later evolved into Lutheran Social Services.

Cliff graduated from Luther College in 1941, attended Luther Seminary in Minneapolis, and was ordained a pastor in the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America in 1945.

He earned his STM (Masters in Sacred Theology) at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Mo.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and as a chaplain in the Navy during World War II. Recalled during the Korean conflict, he was the first chaplain assigned to an LST since World War II, visiting up to 12 ships a day.

During the two years Cliff served as Veterans’ Counselor at Waldorf College, he married Marjorie Hovey from Badger, Iowa, on Dec. 29, 1948. They were partners in ministry for over 50 years.

Cliff returned to the faculty of Waldorf College, teaching Bible from 1963-1973.

His parish ministry included congregations in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Ridgeway and rural Calamus in Iowa.

Cliff also served southern California churches in North Hollywood and Pasadena from 1973-1982.

Cliff and Marj enjoyed a retirement year in 1982, traveling to Japan, China, and Hawaii, then returning to Iowa to be near family.

Cliff concluded his many years of ministry, serving as Dean of Religious Life at Waldorf College from 1983-87, various interim ministries in north Iowa, Pastor of St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith from 1988-92, and Visitation Pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City.

Cliff described his life as a “patchwork of miracles.” He was a man of deep faith and prayer who dedicated himself to service and the preaching and teaching of God’s word.

In thanksgiving and celebration of his 50th Anniversary of Ordination, Cliff established a student scholarship fund at Waldorf College in Forest City.

The family asks that memorials be directed to the Waldorf College Bruland Scholarship or to Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City.

Cliff was preceded in death by his parents; brother, the Rev. Osborne Bruland of Portland, Ore.; sister, Fern Spaulding of Hood River, Ore.; and an infant grandson, Roger Alden of Dougherty.

Jean was born Aug. 17, 1925, in Algona, the daughter of Loyal and Fern (Andrews) Young. She graduated from Algona High School in 1943 and married Lester Godden, her high school sweetheart, Sept. 27, 1943.

Jean worked at camp headquarters in Camp Cooke, Calif., until her husband went overseas. She then re-turned to Algona and worked in Security State Bank until 1948, when she and her husband moved to Clear Lake.

Jean will always be remembered for her warmth, deep faith, joyous laugh, her knitting, painting, golf, and her devotion to family and friends.

Jean is survived by her loving husband, Les Godden, of Clear Lake; her daughter, Doxandra Weber and her husband, Ron, of Nevada; her son, Kurt and wife, Angela, of Sterling Heights, Mich.; a brother, Dixon Young and his wife, Shirley, of Algona; a brother, Keith Young and his wife, Marilyn, of Waterloo; and four loving granddaughters, Kirsten and Meesha Weber of Nevada and Holly and Stephanie Godden of Sterling Heights.

OSAGE — Ray Smolik, 91, of Osage, died Thursday (April 22, 2004) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Ray was born Nov. 7, 1912, in Brainard, Neb., the son of Frank and Anna (Cejka) Smolik. Ray attended school in Brainard and North Dakota.

He moved with his family to Iowa, ending up in the Osage area in 1927, where he attended Little Cedar High School.

He farmed near Osage in Burr Oak Township. Ray was co-founder and a 40-year member of “Antique Acres” near Cedar Falls.

He was also co-founder of “Cedar Valley Memories” in Osage.

Ray was very interested in steam engines, other farm implements and antique autos.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

ST. ANSGAR — Arlo I. Wyborny, 64, of rural St. Ansgar, died Friday (April 23, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly, with the Reverend Robert Cumings officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Monday.

Arlo I. Wyborny was born on May 31, 1939, in Mason City, the son of Herbert and Luella (Christiansen) Wyborny. He attended school in Rock Falls and graduated in 1957.

Arlo worked on road construction for five years.

He was united in marriage to Sharon Swanson on Jan. 6, 1961, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, and to this union two sons were born.

Arlo started farming in 1961, and farmed in the Plymouth and Carpenter area for 30 years before being forced into retirement in 1991, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Arlo enjoyed gardening and sharing his produce with everyone. He was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and camping. He loved training his dogs for pheasant hunting and was very successful in doing so.

Arlo was also a great entrepreneur. He was very creative, always coming up with something new or working on some type of project.

Arlo acquired many friends in his life time. One of his favorite pastimes was playing cards with them, and he also had a great sense of humor. He had a great love for his wife, children, grandchildren, family and friends and enjoyed spending time with them. He will be sadly missed by all and kept in our hearts forever.

MASON CITY — Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Folsom, 96, of Mason City, died Tuesday (April 20, 2004) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Keith Scott of the Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Tuesday.

Memorials may be given to the Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Folsom Memorial Fund.

Betty was born Oct. 17, 1907, the daughter of Ernest Edward and Mary Belle (England) Bardsley in rural Swaledale. The family moved to a farm south of Clear Lake in 1911. Betty attended school in Clear Lake and graduated from Clear Lake High School. She also received her two-year Normal Training Degree and taught school for five years.

On June 24, 1930, Betty was united in marriage to Lawrence J. Folsom at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. In 1931, Betty and Lawrence moved to Mason City.

Betty worked for Younkers and had charge of the mens and boys departments. She retired from Younkers in 1980 after 27 years of service.

Betty was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the KB Circle. She was also a member of the Minerva Study Club, the Camera Club, A.A.R.P., the Mason City Woman’s Club and the United Commercial Traveler’s Auxiliary.

Betty is survived by her daughters, Mary Jane Fix and her husband, Robert, of Urbandale, Larabeth Bader and her husband, Keith, of Dysart, and Linda Hamilton and her husband, David, of Oskaloosa; eight grandchildren: Candace, Shawn, Robert II, Kathryn, Karey, Kent, Matthew and Stacie; and eight great-grandchildren.

MASON CITY — Harold Richard Marsh, 80, of 78 Registry Park, Mason City, died Saturday (April 24, 2004) at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Reverend Paul Nelson of the St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City officiating. Military honors will also be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association on Tuesday.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, and one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the chapel.

The family of Harold Richard Marsh has requested that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of North Iowa in his memory.

Harold Richard Marsh was born on Aug. 22, 1923, in Mason City, the son of Harold Marsh Sr. and Beatrice (Crumm) Marsh. He attended and received his education in the Mason City and Manly schools, graduating from Manly High School in 1942.

He was inducted into the U.S. Navy on Sept. 2, 1942, and served on the U.S.S. Trenton C.L. during World War II and was honorably discharged on Dec. 6, 1945, as a quartermaster second class.

He was united in marriage to Lillian C. Hjelle on Jan. 8, 1946, in Manly. After their marriage, Harold joined the Mason City Fire Department and after 37 years of faithful service retired as a lieutenant in 1983.

Harold owned Marsh Brothers Cement Construction Company in Mason City, and eventually handed down the business to his sons.

Harold loved to fish, hunt, go camping, traveling, was an avid Minnesota Viking fan and Jeff Gordon fan, and was a dedicated firefighter.

His greatest love and enjoyment was spending time with his family and friends. He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather to his many grandchildren. Harold lived for his wife, children, and grandchildren.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City.
