WILLIAM L. CURTIS


OSAGE — William L. “Bill” Curtis, 82, of Osage and formerly of San Diego, Calif., died Wednesday (March 31, 2004) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice Unit in Osage.

Bill was born April 29, 1921, in Peoria, Ill., the son of Amos R. and Jessie L. (Harper) Curtis. Bill moved to Wenat-chee, Wash., in 1926, where he was raised until joining the Army in 1941. He served for five years as baker in the Quartermaster Corps.

Bill worked for General Dynamics, Convair Division, for 30 years, retiring in 1979.

Bill was very active with senior groups during his retirement. He was a past district vice-president of Congress of California Seniors, past president of the Convair Alumni Association, a lifetime member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, and past president of that organization’s retirees in San Diego.

Bill and his wife of 35 years, Mary Curtis, traveled to over 45 countries and took many trips throughout the United States.

Bill and Mary were members of the College Avenue Baptist Church of San Diego since 1971, and are currently members of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage.

Bill was baptized in the River Jordan in Israel. Bill has now left to spend his eternity with his Lord.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating.

There will be visitation from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday before services at the church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Curtis, of Osage; one son, Paul Curtis and his wife, Emily, of Edon, Ohio, and their children, Amanda Curtis of Bluffton, Ohio and Jonathan Curtis of Fort Polk, La.; one daughter, Joan Kirk and her husband, Ken, of Osage, and their children, Tim Kirk of Mason City, and Sarah Kirk of Tacoma, Wash.; one sister, Shirley Hawkins and her husband, Bob, of Eugene, Ore.; one step-daughter, Marlene Parsons of El Cajon, Calif., and one step-son, John Machnov of Santee, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dorothy Curtis; one son, David Curtis, and one sister, Darlene Travis.

DOROTHY L. JOHNSON


MASON CITY — Dorothy L. Johnson, 74, of Mason City, died Tuesday (March 30, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services for Dorothy will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with the Rev. Paul C. Nelson officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the St. James Lutheran Church Radio Fund or Hospice of North Iowa.

Dorothy L. Buhr was born Feb. 11, 1930, the daughter of August and Alma (Weber) Buhr. She was baptized and confirm-ed at St. James Lutheran Church.

Dorothy graduated from Mason City High School in 1948.

Following graduation, she worked as a telephone operator.

For 26 years, she was employ-ed at Sears as a seamstress.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Arthur “Stan” Johnson on May 9, 1952, at the St. James Lutheran Church Parsonage in Mason City.

Dorothy enjoyed crafts, sewing, ceramics, flowers and gardening. She also enjoyed camping, fishing, bird watching and playing 500 with her card clubs.

Every night, Stan and Dorothy would play cribbage and watch any sporting event.

She was always in the kitchen, preparing food and snacks for anyone who would drop by.

Her greatest pride was in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the Rebekah Circle, St. James Altar Guild and the St. James Craft Group.

Those left to cherish the memory of Dorothy are her husband of almost 52 years, Stan, of Mason City; daughter, Kathy Follmuth and husband, Bob, of Mason City; son, Tom Johnson and wife, Cindy, of Chaska, Minn., and son, Mike Johnson and fiancée, Georgann Decker of Windsor Heights, Iowa (who will be married on April 4, 2004). Her grandchildren, Eric Follmuth and wife, Kari, Carrie Braun and husband Greg, Katie, Jessica and Nick Johnson; great-grandchildren, Emily and Alexander Follmuth and Madison and Paige Braun; sisters, Arlene Berrie of Mason City and Lois Turkal and husband, Frank, of Lancaster, Calif.; sister-in-law, Bernice Buhr of Mason City; and numerous very special nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John and Roger Buhr, and sister, Laverna Paulsen.

PLYMOUTH — Lillian M. McMullin, 88, of 1105 Broad St., Plymouth, died Tuesday (March 30, 2004) at her home.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown with the Rev. Kris Snyder and the Rev. William Poland of Wesley United Methodist Church, Mason City, officiating. Interment will be in Brush Point Cemetery, rural Hanlontown.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Bride Colonial Chapel in Manly, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

MESA, Ariz. — Gladys T. Dillon Erickson, 98, died Saturday (March 13, 2004) at Banner Hospice House near her winter home in Mesa, Ariz.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson with the Rev. Mark Decker officiating. Inurnment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson.

MASON CITY — Helen G. Marin, 95, of Mason City, died Monday (March 29, 2004) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

GREENE — Harry Eliasen, 92, of Greene and formerly of Charles City, died Tuesday (March 30, 2004) at his home.

HAMPTON — Myrtle M. Hesse, 86, of Hampton, died Tuesday (March 30, 2004) at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

ALLISON — Stanley Joseph Roose Sr., 88, of Allison, 88, died Monday (March 29, 2004) at the Allison Care Center.

ALLEN D. ANDERSON


TITONKA — Allen D. Anderson, 42, of Titonka, passed away on Tuesday (March 30, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lakota with Pastor Marino Melsted officiating. Burial will take place in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center and will continue one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

Allen Dale Anderson was born Oct. 26, 1961, to Larry and Charlotte (Swanson) Anderson in Blue Earth, Faribault County, Minn.

Allen was baptized at Salem Lutheran Church, Pilot Grove, Minn., on the 27th day of November in 1961. He was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Lakota, in 1977.

Allen went to the Lord on March 30, 2004, following a long, courageous battle with liver problems.

Through his life, he was blessed with many friends and loved ones.

Allen graduated from Titonka High School in 1980 and then went to Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge for construction. After completing college, he worked for Becker Construction.

Allen then married Judith Haler of East Chain, Minn., on March 30, 1984.

After they married, he farmed and raised pigs with his father and brother.

In 1989, Allen went to work for Winnebago Industries in Forest City.

Allen was a loving father who spent most of his time caring for his two loving dau-ghters. Allen enjoyed spending time with his family.

Allen always encouraged us to stay strong and always gave us the positive outcome; he never let the worst situations get the best of his family. Allen was and still is a fighter.

Left to cherish his memory are his two daughters, Ambre of Bancroft and Jessica of Ventura; his father, Larry, of Titonka; a brother, Mark, of Lakota, and his fiancée, Sandy, with their children, Stephanie and Shaun Peterson, Jeremiah, Alyssa, and Sarah Anderson, and Colby Smith; a loving sister, Diane of Titonka; grandmother, Marie Anderson, of Elmore, Minn., and his aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Charlotte And-erson; grandfather, Clifford L. Anderson from Elmore, Minn., and by Leonard and Freda Swanson of Swea City.

VIOLET VIOLA LEVANG


CLEAR LAKE — Violet Viola Levang, 87, of 215 S. Third St. in Clear Lake, died Monday (March 29, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice In-patient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Open Bible Church in Clear Lake with Pastor Will Hunsaker, officiating.

Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the church.

Family suggests memorials to the Violet Levang Memorial Fund.

Violet was born Dec. 26, 1917, in Melrose, Minn., the daughter of Arthur and Flossie (Coe) Cheney.

She graduated from Melrose High School and the University of Minnesota.

She worked at the Palmer House in the Twin Cities. She met her former husband at a revival meeting in the Twin Cities.

Violet married Eli Levang in June 1946. They lived on a farm west of Fertile, Iowa. He died in 1982 and she continued to live on the farm until 1986. She then moved to Clear Lake to live.

Violet worked for Ritter Nursing Home in Clear Lake from 1946 to 1968. She then cooked for the Fertile School until 1976.

She was known as a grandmother to many children she babysat in her home.

She always put others be-fore herself and was a very caring person.

One of her goals in life was to read through the Bible every year. She was an active member of the Open Bible Church in Clear Lake.

Violet is survived by her son, Nathan Levang and his fiancée, Kim Anderson, of Clear Lake; grandchildren, Marie Levang, of Fertile, Laura Swingen, of Fertile, Stephanie Daugard and her husband, Neil, of Britt, and Kara Swingen, of Fertile, and her sister, Lilah Ruehmann, of Little Rock, Ark.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother, Arthur Cheney.

HAROLD SWANN


OSAGE — Harold Swann, 78, of Osage, died Tuesday (March 30, 2004) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Harold was born Aug. 28, 1925, on the family farm near Osage in the house that he lived in all of his life. Harold was the son of Lloyd Grant and Edith (Lesch) Swann.

As a child, he helped his father farm. He suffered several hip surgeries in his teens. Harold graduated from Osage High School in 1943.

On Aug. 27, 1944, in Osage, he married his high school sweetheart, Gwen Smith.

Harold continued farming until his death.

He also worked for years selling Harvestores for A.O. Smith Corp. He purchased Alexander Implement and changed the name to Swann Implement and later to Modern Farm Equipment.

His biggest interest was feeding cattle, which he continued to oversee until his death.

He was active in the Mitch-ell County Farm Bureau and served as its president for two years. He was also a 4-H leader for the Burr Oak Square Shooters.

In September 2003, he moved to the Faith Lutheran Home, where he enjoyed playing cards and having visitors.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and will continue one hour before services on Friday at the church.

He is survived by his wife, Gwen Swann of Osage; one daughter, Dianne Swann of Overland Park, Kan.; one son, Daniel Swann and his wife, Deborah, of Osage; two grand-daughters, Heidi Shriver and her husband, Ryan, of Eagen, Minn., and Lori Kruse and her husband, Ben, of Farmington, Minn.; two grandsons, Travis Swann and Dustin Swann of Osage; three great-grandchildren, Nate and Alison Shriver and Adrianna Kruse.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

ROCK FALLS — Charles “Charlie” Boyd Jr., 72, of Rock Falls, died Wednesday (March 31, 2004) at his home in Rock Falls.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Ruth Hansen officiating. Burial will be at the Rock Falls Cemetery, Rock Falls.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel.

Charles Irving Boyd Jr., the son of Charles Ira and Sadie J. (Togstead) Boyd, was born May 9, 1931, in Mason City. He attended school in Mason City.

At a young age, he started farming and bought a livestock truck, which he used when he bought and sold cattle.

He was united in marriage to Edna Hoffman on Dec. 28, 1952, in Detroit, Mich.

Charlie enjoyed spending time with his family as well as attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.

He loved to play cards at the Rock Falls Farm Store with his buddies and enjoyed his daily drives throughout the countryside.

He could often be found driving his skid loader around the neighborhood to help neighbors with snow removal during the winter months, never expecting anything in return.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Edna, of Rock Falls; his children and their spouses, Darlene Boyd-DeZeeuw and her husband, Allen, of Janes-ville, Wis., Charles D. Boyd and his wife, Mindy Marshall, of Mason City, Diane K. Yunek and her husband, Joel, of Mason City, and Carol Behne and her husband, Michael, of Nora Springs; and six grandchildren, Andrew C. Boyd of Phoenix, Ariz., Coty C. Boyd of Crossville, Tenn., Luke DeZeeuw of Janesville, Wis., Sadie Yunek of Mason City, and Tyler and Spencer Behne both of Nora Springs. Also surviving are one brother, Leonard Boyd, of Mason City; sister-in-law, Rose Boyd, of Mason City; mother-in-law, Edna Hoffman of Mason City; two brothers-in-law, George Hoffman and his wife, Janie, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jim Hoffman of Nora Springs, and many nieces and nephews.

HEDWIG “HEDDIE” DUSOLD


MASON CITY — Hedwig “Heddie” Dusold, 89, formerly of 615 N. Adams Ave., died Wednesday (March 31, 2004) at the Good Shepard Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood- St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City. A Scriptural wake service will be held at 6 p.m. followed by a Catholic Daughters of the Americas Rosary.

Memorials may be given to the Heddie Dusold Memorial Fund.

Hedwig “Heddie” Magdeline, the daughter of John and Laura (Ferstl) Richter, was born Oct. 20, 1914, in Wesley. She graduated from Wesley High School and then attended Hamilton Business College.

After college, she worked for Central Show Printing in Mason City, where she met her future husband, Edward H. Dusold. The couple was married on July 2, 1938, in Wesley.

After their marriage, Heddie chose to stay home to raise her family. After the children were raised, she went to work for the Globe Gazette as a bookkeeper, where she worked until retiring. Throughout the years, she continued to touch many lives with her sense of humor and loving personality.

Heddie had a special passion for her family. She was especially close to her grandchildren. She was also very passionate about her religion. She also enjoyed sewing, gardening, playing cards and doing crossword puzzles.

She was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church of Mason City, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and a member of the St. Celeste Circle at Holy Family.

Heddie is survived by her children and their spouses, Judith Lickteig and her husband, Michael, of Nora Springs, Patti Peterson and her husband, Brad, of Mason City, and James Dusold and his wife, Cynthia, of Reinbeck; a very special niece, Barb Nixt and her husband, Tom, of Surprise, Ariz.; nine grandchildren, John Lickteig and his wife, Kayla, Caroline TeKippe, Matthew, Abbey and Whitney Peterson, Kevin Dusold and his wife, Rachel, and Laura, Todd, and Korin Dusold; and eight great-grandchildren, Brittany Smith, Chance and Brooklyn TeKippe, Lilly, Olivia, Elizabeth Lickteig, and Sarah and Kyle Dusold. Also surviving are two sisters, Ruth Baron, of Bloomington, Minn., and Ann Hayes, of Waterloo; two sisters-in-law, Mary Richter, of Wesley, and Lou Richter, of Bancroft; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward; one great-granddaughter, Amandalina; four brothers, Jack, Urban, Edward and Frank Richter; and two sisters, Theresa Otis and Marie Garry.

The family would like to thank all of Heddie’s family at the Good Shepard Alzheim-er’s unit who cared for her as their own, providing her with their love and accepting her hugs and “I love you’s”.

FOREST GROVE, Ore. —Dr. James C. Ulum, 78, of Forest Grove, Ore., and form-erly of Swaledale, died Thursday morning (March 25, 2004) of age-related causes.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Swaledale United Methodist Church in Swaledale with the Rev. Bruce Wittern officiating. Interment will follow at the Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton, with Veter-ans Rites by Anton-Juhl Post 440 American Legion.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home in Thornton.

Dr. James Clarence “Jim” Ulum was born Nov. 22, 1925, in Swaledale, the son of Clarence E. and Esther J. (James) Ulum. He was raised and received his education in the Swaledale community, graduating from Swaledale High School.

Jim received his undergraduate degree from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, and his master’s degree and doctorate in education from the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

He entered the Navy following high school and retired from the Naval Reserve with the rank of captain.

Jim was united in marri-age to Ann Marie Shepherd on June 8, 1952, in LeMars. They made their home in Iowa and Minnesota until 1970, when they moved to Oregon, settling in the North Bend community. They made their home in North Bend for 26 years until 1996, when they moved to Forest Grove.

Jim and Ann celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary this past June.

He had a long career in education in Iowa, Minnesota and Oregon. Jim served as the superintendent of schools in North Bend from 1970 to 1993.

Jim was a founding board member and past president of the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators.

He was an active member of the Forest Grove United Methodist Church and Rotary International.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Ulum, of Forest Grove, Ore.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Mike Reese, of Portland, Ore., and Jenny Ulum and Tim Gleason, of Eugene, Ore.; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Ann Marie Ulum, of Redmond, Ore., and Christopher and Melissa Ulum of Portland, Ore.; a beloved foster daughter, Barbara Case of Los An-geles; a sister, Jeanne Cole, of Thornton; and nine grandchildren, Alexandra, Rachel and Rebecca Reese; Zachary, Natalie, Jacquelyn, Sam and Andrew Ulum, and Margaret Ann Gleason.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

ELMA MEIER


CHARLES CITY — Elma Meier, 90, formerly of 900 Ninth St. in Charles City, died Thursday (April 1, 2004) at the Ninth Street Chautau-qua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Elma Meier will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Bethany Alliance Church with the Rev. Kent Sovine, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home,1205 S. Main St. in Charles City and continue one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the church.

Elma Eleanora Ernst Meier was born July 22, 1913, on a farm east of Rockford, the daughter of John and Anna (Vietmeier) Ernst.

She was baptized and confirmed at the Flood Creek Methodist Church and later asked Jesus into her heart as her personal Lord and Savior.

Elma graduated from Rockford High School in 1931

On Nov. 17, 1932, she was united in marriage to Julius Meier in the home of her aunt, Lydia Kuppinger, at Mason City.

They lived in the Rockford area for many years, where they raised turkeys and did custom bailing while they farmed. Elma worked right along with Julius on the farming operation.

She was a member of Bethany Alliance Church, Woman’s Club and had served on the Riverside Cemetery Board at Rockford.

She was known as a lady that loved flowers and gardening.

Elinore was born Feb. 18, 1915, in Plattsmouth, Neb., the daughter of Alois and Maria (Lopour) Smetana.

She graduated from Platts-mouth High School in 1933, after which she attended the University of Omaha.

Elinore taught grades one through eight in schools near Plattsmouth for two years.

On July 11, 1936, Elinore married Arlie Christensen in Glenwood, Iowa. The couple moved to Mason City in 1941.

Elinore was active in Women’s Organizations at Immanuel Lutheran Church and St. Paul Lutheran Church. She also served on nursing home programs for Church Women United.

She was also active at the Mason City Senior Activity Center.

Elinore was an avid bridge player and immensely enjoyed her weekly games with dear friends. She also loved playing pinochle with friends in her earlier years.

Elinore was very proud of her Czech heritage and was fluent in the Czech language.

She loved dancing to polka music and was famous for her rye bread, dill pickles and sauerkraut.

Elinore is survived by her four children: Ronald, of Lincoln, Mass.; Dennis, of Cedar Rapids; Larry, of Victor, Idaho, and Mary Lou, of Medford, Mass.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arlie; sisters, Pauline, Blanche, Helen and Ann, and brothers, Alois and Joseph.

Gladys Anderson was born in Thompson, Iowa, on Jan. 24, 1906. She attended high school in Thompson and college at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.

On Jan. 7, 1929, Gladys was united in marriage with Paul Dillon. Following Paul’s death in 1970, she married W.H. (Bill) Erickson in 1972.

Bill was a longtime friend with whom Paul and Gladys had double-dated prior to their marriage.

Gladys was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Overland Park, Kan., where a memorial service was held in addition to a service in Mesa, Ariz.

Gladys is survived by five children, Ron Dillon and his wife, Marjorie of Lenexa, Kan., Marlis Hadeed and her husband, Vic, of Highland Beach, Fla., Dale Dillon and his wife, Jan, of Thief River Falls, Minn., Larry Dillon of Roseville, Calif., and Neil Dillon and his wife, Jackie, of Chandler, Ariz.; and a step-daughter, Florence deBuhr and her husband, Harold, of Ottumwa. She was blessed with 22 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.

Robert Rush Culver was born on Sept. 9, 1920, in St. Ansgar, Iowa, the son of Rush and Emma (Holden) Culver. He attended and received his education in the Manly school system, graduating from Manly High School in 1938.

After graduating from high school, he attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette for two years.

He enlisted on Oct. 3, 1942, and was inducted into active duty in the U.S. Army on July 27, 1943, and was trained as a cryptographer in the Signal Corps. He served overseas in the Pacific Theater in Calcutta, India, during World War II.

After his honorable discharge on May 26, 1946, he came back to Manly and in the fall of 1946, he enrolled at the University of Iowa and graduated with a B.A. degree in journalism in 1948.

Robert moved back to Manly and went into partnership with his dad at the Manly Signal newspaper. After his dad retired, he took over the newspaper as editor and publisher in 1950.

He was united in marriage to Marjorie Wyatt on Aug. 3, 1952, in Hudson, Iowa. After their marriage, together they owned and operated the Man-ly Signal until they retired in 1994 as a third-generation editor and publisher of the weekly newspaper.

He enjoyed golfing, tennis, sports and living part-time in Clear Lake, but his great love and enjoyment was his family.

He was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly; over 50- year member of the Edward Tosel American Legion Post 110 of Manly; over 50-year member of the Grand Lodge AF&AM; Heather Hill Chapter OES; Manly Lions Club; Manly Jaycees; Hawkeye Press Club; Scoutmaster for eight years; secretary of the Manly Rural Telephone Co., and was the city clerk in Manly for more than 25 years.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marjorie Culver, of Manly; two sons, Dale Culver and his wife, Ann, of Ames, and David Culver and his wife, Diane, of Iowa City; three grandchildren, Alex and Evan Culver of Ames, and Emily Culver of Iowa City; two sisters, Dorothy Stanley of Littleton, Colo., and Beverly Oltman of Cedar Falls; eight nephews and one niece; as well as other relatives and many friends.

GREEN VALLEY, Ariz. — Mrs. Patricia Sherwin, 82, of Green Valley, Ariz., a former Iowan, died Wednesday (March 31, 2004) at the Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz.

She was born Oct. 28, 1921, in Keokuk, Iowa, to the late Ruth Tiffany Thompson and Dr. William Stuart Thompson. Growing up in Columbia, Mo., she was a graduate of Hickman High School, attended Christian College (now Col-umbia College) and then the University of Iowa where she studied art under the eminent artist, Grant Wood.

She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Society and the Episcopal Church. Her contribution to World War II was at Curtis Wright in St. Louis, where she discovered airplane blueprints lacking pilot relief tubes.

In 1944 she married Will-iam B. Hathorn of Mason City, Iowa. They lived in Mason City for a short time before building a home in Clear Lake, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 1996.

She lived in Tucson and was active in the art community, working until her retirement a few years ago as a restorer of paintings.

In 2001 she married Douglas F. Sherwin of Green Valley and he survived her along with her daughter, Tiffany Hathorn Johnson, of Tucson; her sister, Jean Thompson Glenn, of Columbia; two nephews; and one niece.

Marvin Joseph Alderman was born on June 10, 1930, in Charles City, the son of Burnett M. and Dorothy (Tobin) Alderman.

He attended and received his education in the Immaculate Conception School in Charles City, and received his G.E.D. from NIACC in Mason City.

Marvin worked as a weld-er for four years in St. Paul, Minn., before working as an over-the-road truck driver where he drove truck from coast to coast for many years until his retirement.

He was united in marriage to Leanna Wigant in 1958.

He was united in marriage to Joyce Gaskeyl in 1978, in St. Paul, Minn. She preceded him in death in 1995.

He enjoyed reading science fiction and western books, watching western movies on TV. Marvin also loved to fish and loved visiting with family and friends in Charles City and Mason City.

Marvin was a very loving and caring brother and loved to play jokes on two of his sisters, Gloria and Beth; and he was a very special fishing buddy to his brother-in-law, Eddy.

Marvin was born and raised a Catholic.

Charles Henry Dewey, the son of Arthur and Kate (Hullyer) Dewey, was born Nov. 15, 1916, on a farm near Britt. He attended the rural schools of Britt Township.

Charles enlisted in the U.S. Army on Jan. 2, 1942, and was stationed at Camp Roberts, Calif. Upon completion of basic training, he was assigned to the 32nd Division and served in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines.

He met his wife to be, Mad-eline Lena Roner, in Austra-lia. They were united in marriage Sept. 2, 1944, in Sydney, Australia.

Upon his honorable discharge from the military, Charles and Madeline moved to Britt in September of 1945.

He worked for Lechelt Motors, Pritchard Auto, Great Lakes Pipeline, Hardgraves Blacktopping and Carlson’s Paving before joining the Britt Community Schools as a maintenance man in 1952. He retired in 1979 and help-ed out at the school and did other jobs around the com-munity.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Britt American Legion and the Britt Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by two children, Betty Ann Duff and her husband, Bill, of Sydney, Australia and Charles Arthur Dewey and his wife, Margaret, of Nokomis, Fla.; four grandchildren, Jenny, Jason, Billy and Lisa; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Viola Dewey Mattoon of Fairmont, Minn.; and other relatives and friends.

George Edwin Quisling, son of Thomas and Anne (Aasland) Quisling, was born Jan. 18, 1914, in Worth County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church.

On Dec. 29, 1934, he was married to Astrid (Babe) Haugo by Pastor Ole Odland in Yankton, S.D.

George farmed in the Lake Mills area until he had a farm accident in 1968. They then moved into Lake Mills in 1972, where he was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church, serving as deacon and treasurer of the Brotherhood, and also served on the board of the Farmers Co-op Elevator and Co-op Services.

Together, George and Astrid enjoyed winters in Arizona for 20 years, where he was also active in the Victory Lutheran Church.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 69 years, Astrid (Babe) Quisling of Lake Mills, and their three children, Philip and his wife, Sandy, Quisling of Sacramento, Calif., Paul and his wife, Joy, Quisling of Zanesville, Ohio, and Jean and her husband, Wes. They lived their entire married life in Osage. Marianne was a Cub Scout leader and member of the Mitchell County Hospital Auxiliary, Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Sacred Heart Guild. Marianne enjoyed doing crafts.

She is survived by her husband, Melvin Weaverling of Osage; one son, Michael Weaverling and his wife, Melinda, and their children, Kristen and Bradley of Cedar Rapids; one daughter, Marilyn Weaverling of Fairchance, Pa.; five sisters, Carol Kuzdak and her husband, Richard, of Detroit, Mich., Sandra Abraham of Indianapolis, Ind., Ginny Leto of Bell, Calif., Donna Sanchez of Fort Worth, Texas., Carla Albro of Indiana-polis, Ind., and one brother, Richard Rushford and his wife, Patty, of Eugene, Ore.

WALES, Mich. — Atna Irene Arendts, 94, of Wales, Mich., and formerly of Des Moines, died Tuesday (March 30, 2004) in Michigan.

Her funer-al service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, with the Rev. Randy Nielsen officiating. Interment will follow at the Kensett Cemetery, Kensett.

Atna was born in Hawkeye, Iowa, on Aug. 8, 1909, a dau-ghter of the late Loren A. and Alta M. (Goodspeed) Parker. She married Obert Thomas Arendts on May 12, 1931, in Belvedere, Ill. He preceded her in death on April 25, 1997. They were married for 64 years and raised four sons.

GARNER — Bruce E. Anderson, 79, of Garner, former men’s clothing store owner in Forest City and former resident of Klemme, died, Thursday (April 1, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. Father Michael Schueller will officiate. Interment with full military honors will take place in the St. James Cemetery, Forest City.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home, 528 E. Main St., Klemme, and continue one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.

Bruce F. Anderson, was born May 20, 1924, in Forest City, the son of Orville S. and Marguerite (Newman) Anderson. He attended and graduated from Forest City High School in 1942.

He then attended Carlton College in Northfield, Minn., for a time. Bruce later enlisted in the United States Army- Air Force Pilot’s Training Program in Oklahoma. He served in the Army from June 17, 1943, until his honorable discharge on Nov. 2, 1945. During his tenure he flew B-bombers as a pilot, co-pilot and crew commander in the Central European Theatre during World War II. He had received the EAME Theatre Service Medal and World War II Victory Medal. At the time of his discharge, he was an aviation cadet. Bruce was a life-long member of the American Legion and VFW.

Bruce was united in marriage to Arleen Manus on Jan. 7, 1980, at Lincoln, Neb. Bruce owned and operated his own clothing business in Forest City for many years. He and Arleen traveled to-gether as manufacture rep-resentatives until his retirement in 2000.

Bruce and Arleen very much enjoyed Benchrest shooting competitions. Bruce was an excellent marksman. Bruce raised registered quarter horses for many years. He loved photography and had done his own developing. Bruce was also an avid golfer, a pastime that he shared with Arleen. He loved times spent with family and friends, especially with his grandchildren. He was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner.

Those left to cherish the memory of his life include his wife, Arleen Anderson, Garner; daughters, Nancy Garcia and husband, Charlie, Minneapolis, Minn., Lori Lau and husband, Mark, Garner, and Cindy Wingerson and husband, Tracy, Fort Dodge; sons, Tim and wife, Patty, Anderson, Bloomington, Minn., Dan, and his wife, Sherry Manus, Klemme, and Kurt and his wife, Shazia, Anderson of Ames; grandchildren, Josh and Andy Garcia, Zach and Amy Anderson, Traci Cox, Ben, Renae and Hannah Lau, and Jordan, Jenna and Jamin Manus, and Ezra Manus, and two great grandchildren, Emma Hartigan and Reilly Garcia.

MARGIE FAY BRACKEN


ROCHESTER, Minn. — Margie Fay (Awe) Bracken was born May 2, 1922, in Alden, the daughter of Roy and Margaret Awe, and died peacefully April 1, 2004, in Rochester, Minn.

In honor of her wishes, we celebrate her life and all the beauty she created. From early in her life, she blazed a trail that touched lives and led her down many paths.

Margie and her husband, Donald Bracken, met in high school in Mason City, graduating in 1939. They were later wed in Washington, D.C., on May 2, 1942.

Marge and Don’s travels in the military took them many places around the world. Among the fondest memories were their four years in Athens, Greece, in the early 1960s, where Marge served as secretary for the American Community Schools of Athens.

After retirement from the military, they spent 38 wonderful years in San Antonio, Texas. Marge became a NCMA master teacher in the art of professional ceramics and nurtured the creativeness of many students during her teaching years. She wrote four craft guidance handbooks which were published in 1977.

Three years ago, she and Donald moved to Rochester to be closer to family.

Marge is survived by her husband, Donald, of Rochester, Minn.; two daughters, Barbara, and her husband, Dick Smith, of Sumner, and Penny Bracken of Rochester, Minn.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Family and friends will gather at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 7, in the Continental Room of the Hanford Inn, Highway 122 West, Mason City, to celebrate and honor Marge’s wonderful life. The Rev. Paul C. Nelson of the St. James Lutheran Church, Mason City, will preside at the memorial service.

CLEAR LAKE — Joel Duitscher, 79, of 1310 Village Road, Clear Lake, died Friday (April 2, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Joel was born in Clarion, Iowa, the son of Joe and Carrie (Petersen) Duitscher. He graduated from Clarion High School in 1942. He served in the United States Army during World War II.

Joel married Barbara Mc-Cutcheon Oct. 4, 1947, in Goldfield, Iowa. He farmed in the Clarion area for 14 years. He managed the Grundy Center Cooperative Elevator before transferring to Des Moines, where he was in grain merchandising. He re-tired in Clear Lake.

Joel was an avid sports fan and enjoyed gardening, woodworking and spending time around the lake, and especially being with his family and grandchildren.

He was a member of Clear Lake Christian Church and Clear Lake V.F.W.

Joel is survived by his wife, Barbara Duitscher, Clear Lake, and two daughters, Jody Babinat and her husband, Tom, Grundy Center, and Patricia Larsen and her husband, Ralph, Clear Lake; five grandchildren, Shane Babinat, Shawna Babinat and her fiancée Scott Kuiper, Keri Babinat, Kelsey Larsen and Bryan Larsen.

Wilmer was born on April 5, 1917, in Adams, Minn., to Aloysious and Elizabeth (Heumann) Landherr. He grew up near Rose Creek, Minn. On Oct. 14, 1944, he married Evangeline Gerber in Johnsburg, Minn., and spent his entire married life on the farm west of Stacyville. To this union were born five sons and five daughters.

Wilmer enjoyed hunting and trapping, attending auction sales and playing cards. He was a 21-year member of the board of directors at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home, where he served as secretary for many years. He was also active on the Visitation School Board and with the Knights of Columbus.

Wilmer is survived by his wife of 59 years, Evangeline, and 10 children; James of Cedar Rapids, Ronald (Audrey) of Marion, Mary Jean (David) Johnson of DeWitt, Janet (Dwight) Jorgensen of St. Ansgar, Kathryn (Wayne) Halvorson of Chatfield, Minn., Thomas (Elaine) and Harold (Vicki) all of Stacyville; Annette Hagen of Northwood; Ruth (James) Dieterich of Galesburg, Ill., and John (Annette) of Marshalltown. Michael was born August 6, 1987, in Mason City, Iowa. He attended Madison and Harding Elementary School, John Adams Middle School, Mason City High School and most recently he was attending school in Dubuque. Mike was outgoing, friendly and had a great sense of humor. He was always willing to help out a friend and lend an ear or shoulder when needed. You could always count on Mike to be there.

Mike has enjoyed many different activities throughout the years such as soccer, football, track, Mason City Swim Club, Stebbens Children’s Theatre and Cub Scouts, but his greatest love was skating. Mike treasured his friends and treasured his family and those that knew him, loved him. Words cannot convey what a wonderful kid he was. Although he leaves behind a large void, he also leaves behind many happy memories.

Mike will be sadly missed by his parents, Rod and Michelle Skadburg of Mason City; sister, Katie J. Lee of Mason City; brothers, Jacob E. Helen G. Cook was born on March 25, 1909, the daughter of Adelbert and Maria (Bohen) Cook in Mason City, Iowa. She attended the Mason City public school system and graduated from Mason City High School in 1927.

In 1941, she was united in marriage to Neil C. Marin in Reno, Nev. Helen was a former member of First United Methodist Church in Mason City. She was a wonderful cook and loved to play cards. Helen enjoyed traveling, visiting with her friends and her grandchildren. She also loved to play games and work word puzzles.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Dan M. Lila was born May 4, 1923, near Belmond, the daughter of Dan and Sadie (VanBuskirk) Fjetland. She attended grade school at Belmond. She graduated from Clarion High School. Lila married Harvey C. Hopkey on June 1, 1940. They farmed southwest of Alexander until 1967, and then moved to Clear Lake where she worked at Johnson’s Paint and Gift. She later went to work for Orkin Exterminating in Mason City and retired from there after 20 years. Her first husband, Harvey, died in 1985. She married Glen Lekwa of Clear Lake on August 18, 1990, and they made their home in Clear Lake.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and went to Women’s Circle. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed bowling, boating, going to Little League games and doing puzzles.

Margaret L. Lucas was born November 29, 1916, in Mason City, to Jacob and Lizzy (Leachman) Poohl. She was one of eight children. Margaret was a life-long resident of Mason City, where she grew up and attended school. On April 4, 1953, Margaret was united in marriage to Robert F. Lucas at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple made their home in Mason City.

Margaret was employed as a canner in the canning division of J.B. Decker and Sons Meat Packing Co. for many years as well being a homemaker. Margaret was a devoted wife, nurturing mother and grandmother. Her family was extremely important to her and she treasured them dearly. She especially treasured time spent with her grandchildren. Her sons claim that Margaret grew the finest tomatoes and cucumbers in her garden and canned the best tasting dill pickles around.

Some of Margaret’s favorite leisure activities and interests included annual summer fishing trips to Canada with her husband, Robert, and the “Lunker Club”, all kinds of gardening, tending flowers, (“yellow mums” were her husband’s favorite) and growing exceptional vegetables and fruits.

Margaret will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her. Those grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her two sons, Bob (Sue) Lucas of Clear Lake, Gary (Julie) Lucas of Mason City; four grandchildren, Jamie (Nicole) Lucas of Mason City, Robbie Lucas of Clear Lake, Laurie Lucas and Nathan Lucas, both of Mason City; two great grandchildren, Katie and Isaiah Lucas; one sister, Josephine Linne of Mason City; and one brother, Johnny Poohl of Clear Lake.

TITONKA— Elmer Henry Madetzke, 80, of Titonka, died Saturday (April 3, 2004) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona.

Elmer was born on May 5, 1923, in Hebron Township, near Stevens, Iowa, to Henry and Martha (Maass) Madetzke. He received his education in the country school near Stevens. After his schooling, Elmer started farming. On November 22, 1944, Elmer was married to Maxine Kessal near Elmore, Minnesota. The couple continued farming near Stevens until 1963. They moved near Lakota, Iowa, and farmed there until 1988, when Elmer retired. Elmer and Maxine moved into Titonka in 1989, where Maxine operated the café for a few years.

Elmer had belonged to the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Stevens, where he had been baptized and confirmed. When they moved to the Lakota area, Elmer and Maxine became members of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lakota. Elmer enjoyed fishing, playing horseshoes and hard work.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine, Titonka, Iowa, and his children, Eldean Madetzke and wife, Dorothy, Hampton, Wesley Madetzke and wife, Judy, Elmore, Minn., and Steve Madetzke and wife, Rhonda, Forest City. Also surviving are five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and his brother, Arlin Madetzke, Fairmont, Minn.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Erna and Alma Madetzke.

CLEAR LAKE — Ann Marie Harris, 86, of 17475 France St., Omaha, Neb., formerly of Clear Lake, died Thursday (April 1, 2004) at her home.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour before the service on Tuesday at the church.

The family suggests memorials be directed to Opportunity Village in Clear Lake.

Ann was born Sept. 8, 1917, in Howard County, Neb., the daughter of Clyde and Johanna (Petersen) Jacobsen.

She married Dwayne L. Harris in Omaha, Neb.

Ann started her own company as a consumer research analyst, which she operated for fifteen years.

Ann is survived by her husband Dwayne L. Harris, Omaha, Neb; daughter Kay A. Wise and her husband Dr. Kenneth, Omaha, Neb.; her son, Ron Harris, Clear Lake; four grandchildren, Kristl M. Finnes, Stillwater, Minn., Kenton G. Wise, Omaha, Neb., Sherri and Cindy Knutson both of Minneapolis, Minn.; three great-grandchildren, Carlee Knutson, Kennedi Finnes and Kayleigh Finnes; and two brothers, Dale Jacobsen, Firth, Neb.; and Gene Jacobsen and his wife Marilyn, North Platt, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, James L. Harris; grandson, James L. Harris Jr.; and three brothers Glen, Byron and Calvin Jacobsen.

GARNER— Bruce E. Anderson, age 79, of Garner, former men’s clothing store owner in Forest City and former resident of Klemme, died Thursday (April 1, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. Father Michael Schueller will be officiating. Interment with full military honors will take place in the St. James Cemetery, Forest City.

Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 4, at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home in Klemme and will continue one hour prior to the service today at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the family of Bruce Anderson or to the donor’s choice.

Bruce F. Anderson was born May 20, 1924, in Forest City, the son of Orville S. and Marguerite (Newman) Anderson. He attended and graduated from Forest City High School in 1942. He then attended Carlton College in Northfield, Minn., for a time. Bruce later enlisted in the United States Army Air Force Pilot’s Training Program in Oklahoma. He served in the Army from June 17, 1943, until his honorable discharge on November 2, 1945. During his tenure he flew B- Bombers as a pilot, co-pilot, and crew commander in the Central European Theatre during World War II. He had received the EAME Theater Service Medal and World War II Victory Medal. At the time of his discharge he was an aviation cadet. Bruce was a life-long member of the American Legion and VFW.

Bruce was united in marriage to Arleen Manus on January 7, 1980 ,at Lincoln, Neb. Bruce owned and operated his own clothing business in Forest City for many years. He and Arleen traveled together as manufacturers representatives until his retirement in 2000. Bruce and Arleen very much enjoyed Benchrest shooting competitions. Bruce was an excellent marksman. Bruce raised registered quarter horses for many years. He loved photography and had done his own developing. Bruce was also an avid golfer, a pasttime that he shared with Arleen. He loved times spent with family and friends, especially with his grandchildren. He was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner.

Those left to cherish the memory of his life include his wife, Arleen Anderson, Garner; daughters, Nancy Garcia and husband, Charlie, Minneapolis, Minn., Lori Lau and husband, Mark, Garner, and Cindy Wingerson and husband, Tracy, Fort Dodge; sons, Tim and wife, Patty, Anderson, Bloomington, Minn., Dan, and his wife, Sherry Manus, Klemme, and Kurt and his wife, Shazia, Manus of Ames; grandchildren, Josh and Andy Garcia, Zach and Amy Anderson, Traci Cox, Ben, Renae and Hannah Lau, Baylie and Carter Wingerson and Jordan, Jenna and Jamin Manus, and Ezra Manus; two great grandchildren, Emma Hartigan and Reilly Garcia.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Gregory Bruce Anderson.
