B’ANN LEA HUFF


MASON CITY — B’Ann Lea Huff, 49, of 1208 Sixth St. S.E., Mason City, died Wednesday (April 14, 2004) at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics of congestive heart disease and cancer of the lung, liver and bones.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church, 125 E. State St., Mason City, with the Rev. Ron Stein officiating.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to services at the church and her cremated remains will be inurned at Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.

B’Ann was born on July 17, 1954, in Mason City, the dau-ghter of Duane and Audrey “Dyre” Huff.

In 1972, she graduated from Rockwell High School and then from La’ James Beauty College.

She worked for United Home Bank and then moved to Port Aransas, Texas, and was employed at the Inland State Bank.

Later she worked at various convenient stores on the Texas Gulf coastline.

She was married to Ron Hogan on Dec. 15, 1972, at the Hanford Community Church in rural Mason City.

They were married seven years and had lived near Rockwell following his military service duty.

B’Ann collected many things that had meaning to her, starting with the Barbie dolls of her youth and continuing through her life to stuffed animals, Pegasus flying horses, the California Raisins, replacements for her grandmother’s dishes, ceramic blue birds and pigs, and boxes of all shapes, sizes and materials to keep her doodads in.

She liked flower gardening with red roses and hanging baskets, cooking outdoors and combing the beaches near her home for shells and driftwood, and listening to the Beatles hits.

She was a kind person and had a gentle nature around her dogs and cats. She believed in keeping life simple and moving slowly along life’s path. She could bring laughter to all around her.

B’Ann is survived by her 16-year-old son, Zeke; parents Duane and Audrey Huff, and grandfather Viva Dyre, all of Mason City; three brothers, Clifford and his wife, Norma Huff, of St. Cloud, Minn.; Edward and his wife, Wylene of Alvin, Texas, and Fred Huff, of Manly; nieces and nephews, Alyson, Adam, Andrea, Zachary, Brandy, Jasmine and Josilyn; aunts and uncles, Jim and Colleen Dyre, of Clear Lake; Gloria and Gary George, of Northwood; Jo Ann (Roger) Dyre, of Centerville; Dean and Helen Huff, of Naples Fla.; Roberta and Jack Wharam, of Indianapolis, Ind.; Reva and Chet Fredin, of Waterloo; great-aunts and uncles, Evelyn (Carl) Dyer, of Nora Springs, Iva (Floyd) Scarrow, of Minneapolis, Tilman and Lucille Sears, of Clear Lake; Guymon Sears, of Mason City; Pete and Gladys Adams, of Mason City; Nadine (Huff) Berger, of Amana, Iowa; cousins, Kathy and David Septer, Larry (Judy) Benson, Jay and Kami Dyre, Lance Rippen, Susan and Darren McDonald, Tammy (George) Hain, Danny George, Teresa George, Steve and Roxann Huff, Deanna (Huff) Hamlin, Dixie and Phil Eklund, Scott and Cheryl Huff, Trudy and Dayton Molendorp, Glen and Verna Wharam, Terry and Keith Rae, Traci and Robert Blazek, Pam and Mike Denny, Tim and Nita Fitzgerald, Tom and Victoria Fitzgerald, and Terry and Susan Fitzgerald.

OLIVER C. YELLAND


SHEFFIELD — Oliver C. Yelland, 76, of Sheffield, died Saturday (April 10, 2004) at his home following a battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Sheffield with the Rev. R. Karl Watkins presiding. Inurnment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

Oliver Charles Yelland was born in Sheffield, Iowa, on March 10, 1928, to Oliver and Dorothea (Bartruff) Yelland. Oliver grew up in Sheffield, and attended grade school and high school, graduating in 1946.

During the summers of his high school years, he worked for several companies, including the Minneapolis and Saint Louis Railroad, the Sheffield Brick & Tile Co. and Keystone Manufacturing.

After graduation, he attend-ed college at Upper Iowa University in Fayette and Hamilton Business College. He joined his father in the insurance business in 1947.

Through the years, Oliver served numerous civic and professional organizations in various capacities, including charter member and the first secretary of the Sheffield Lions Club, the Sheffield Planning & Zoning Commission, the Sheffield Businessman’s Club, the Sheffield Community Club, the First Methodist Church and the LeMars Mutual Insurance Advisory Council.

In 1972, he welcomed his son, Dan, into the business.

Oliver married Lola Jacot on March 14, 1948, and four children were born into that union, Jeff, Dan, Sue and Pam.

Oliver was remarried on Nov. 23, 1984, to Cathy Schol.

Among Oliver’s hobbies and interests were hunting, gun collecting, model railroading, woodworking, reading Civil War and Western history, and traveling to the western states.

He enjoyed the mountains, riding on the narrow-gauge train from Durango to Silverton, Colo., and visiting the numerous history museums.

His greatest joy, however, was sharing time with his family and friends.

Oliver died April 10, 2004, after a year-long battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy Yelland of Sheffield; four children, Jeff (Teresa) Yelland of Centerville, Dan (Connie) Yelland of Sheffield, Sue (Steve) Ralston of Waterloo and Pam (Tracy) Ingham of Rockford; three step-children, Jesse (Lisa) Carpenter of Washington, Noah (Belinda) Carpenter of Council Bluffs, and Rebekah Ward and John Montalbano of Springfield, Ill.; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothea Rawson of Sheffield, and one nephew, Mike (Mary Jane) Rawson of Thornton, and one niece, Priscilla (Jim) Scholton of Athens, Ohio.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Clara Francis (Polly).

WINNIE BUSS


KLEMME — Winnie Buss, 97, a lifelong resident of the Klemme area and most recently a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center, died Wednesday (April 14, 2004) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme, with the Rev. Donna Buckman officiating. Burial will be in the Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Immanuel Reform-ed United Church of Christ-Klemme or to the donor’s choice.

Winnie Albers was born Feb. 4, 1907, on her parents’ farm in rural Klemme, the daughter of George and Evawina (Wientjes) Albers. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Reformed Church.

Winnie attended rural Klemme schools and graduated from the eighth grade. Following her graduation, she helped raise her family on the farm.

Winnie was united in marriage to Edgar “Mike” Buss on Aug. 11, 1936, at the Immanuel Reformed Church in Klemme. Following their marriage, the couple farmed in rural Klemme for 26 years.

In addition to assisting Edgar with the farm, Winnie was a lifelong homemaker. After retiring from active farming, Winnie and Mike moved to Klemme in the early 1960s, where they made their home for many years.

The couple enjoyed traveling throughout the western United States and had been to Arizona, the Black Hills, Yellowstone and various other locations, as well as vacationing in Hawaii.

Winnie looked forward to any occasions that included her family and friends.

She enjoyed hosting duck dinners for her family and topping them off with one of her delicious homemade pies that her family will fondly remember.

Various other gatherings she hosted included hamburger frys, oyster stew, waffle dinners and Sunday afternoon get-togethers following church services.

Winnie had been a longtime member of the Sunshine Club in Klemme. She had also enjoyed playing in various bridge and 500 groups around the area.

Some of her other favorite pastimes included raising beautiful daffodils, roses and peonies.

Winnie was excellent at doing handicraft, needlework, quilting and crocheting. She had made numerous gifts for her family and friends.

Winnie was very much devoted to her family, spouse, and siblings. She and her sisters would often assist each other with many projects and activities.

She enjoyed traveling with her sister, Carrie, and looked forward to shopping excursions to Austin, Minn.

After her husband’s death in February 1998, Winnie continued to maintain her independence by living in her own home in Klemme.

In the later years of her life, she would make daily trips to Belmond to visit her sister at the health care center.

In November 1998, she became a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center and had lived there since that time.

She will be remembered by many for being a very independent and determined lady, even in the time of her decline in health.

Winnie is survived by several nieces and nephews, in-laws and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edgar “Mike” Buss, and four sisters, five brothers and one nephew.

H.N. ‘CHUCK’ HAYES


MARCO ISLAND, Fla. —H.N. “Chuck” Hayes, 78, formerly of Williamston, Mich., beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died peacefully on Saturday (April 10, 2004) at his home on Marco Island.

Born in 1925 in Forest Hill, Mich., Chuck was the son of the late Don and Mae Hayes. He attended Iowa State University and was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.

After serving in the Navy, Chuck began his career as an entrepreneur. He was the founder of H.N. Hayes and Co. (based in Michigan) and was the chairman of the board at the time of his death.

Chuck balanced a successful career In business with an active family and community life. He was a member of the University Lutheran Church, Walnut Hills Country Club and Island Country Club.

His free hours were spent on the golf course, on his boat, and in the company of family and friends.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Frances; his children, Laura Lee Hayes (Bob Brill) in Ann Arbor, Mich.; Jo Will-emsen (Roger Chizek) in Mason City; Michael Hayes (Ann) in East Lansing, Mich., and Lou Sharp (Brad) in Williamston, Mich.; 5 step-children and 22 grandchildren, including David Willemsen (Nancy Smith) in Mason City; Emily Willemsen in Mason City; Brian, Kevin and Tyler Sharp in Williamston, and Christopher and Megan Hayes in East Lansing; and stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceeded in death by his first wife, Ginny; his second wife, lsabel; his brothers, Duane and Charlie, and his sister, Gletha.

A memorial service will be held Friday, April 23, on Marco Island.

CLARION — Edward Lester, 81, of Clarion, died Wednesday (April 14, 2004) at Wright Medical Center in Clarion.

CHARLES CITY — William Cordray, 82, of 205 Riverside Drive, Charles City, died Thursday (April 15, 2004) at University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

A funeral Mass for William Cordray will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Monsignor Stanley Hayek celebrating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Dan was born Nov. 24, 1979, in Mason City, the son of Anthony and Nadine (Quitney) Pals and brother to Jarrod and Derek. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1998 and North Iowa Area Community College in 2001. Dan was currently employed by Custom Concrete Contractors and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Dan will be greatly missed by the people whose lives he touched.

His greatest loves were his family, friends, music, cars, snowboarding and water sports. He loved to entertain, drawing his family and friends together. Words cannot express how deeply he’ll be missed. God bless him.

Ralph was born Jan. 8, 1920, in Mason City, the son of John and Anna (Geist) Marker. He was baptized, confirmed and was a lifetime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Ralph served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the medical corps as well as the Civilian Conservation Corps in Hampton and Guthrie Center for two years.

Ralph married Bonnie J. Buckland on Oct. 23, 1942, in Glenview, Minn. He worked for Jacob E. Decker and Sons for many years, retiring from Armour in 1974. Following retirement, Ralph worked at NIACC for 10 years. He was a member of the Lutheran Laymen’s League at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, church bowling league, enjoyed traveling and was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan. Ralph was a loving and wonderful father to Michael and Ann and de-voted grandfather to Misty. His happy, outgoing personality was a joy to family and friends.

OSAGE — Melvin E. Jensen, 85, of Osage died Saturday (April 17, 2004) at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

NORA SPRINGS — Marie A. Crowell-Aarons, 86, of Summit Heights Assisted Living, Nora Springs, formerly of Mason City, died early Saturday morning (April 17, 2004) at Nora Springs Health Care Center in Nora Springs.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 5th St. S.E. in Mason City with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Inurnment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. S.E. in Mason City. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Marie Angela Crowell-Aarons was born June 30, 1917, in Staceyville to George F. and Elizabeth (Nuebel) Gerk. After the birth of Marie, the family moved to Hillsboro, N.D. In 1930, at the age of 13, Marie and the family moved back to Clear Lake, where she attended and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1935.

On March 5, 1940, Marie was united in marriage to Clarence D. Crowell. Marie became a busy homemaker. Marie and Clarence became the proud parents of five children, Larry, Robert, Richard, Gay and Bradley. Marie enjoyed the tender and special moments of being a devoted, loving and nurturing wife and mother to her husband and children. Marie’s husband, Clarence died on October 29, 1961. Several years went by, and then Marie met and married Roy F. Aarons on February 17, 1973. Roy died April 3, 1989.

Paramount to Marie was her devotion of her faith at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City of which she was a lifelong member and active participant throughout her life. She was a passionate volunteer of both the American Red Cross (she was also a member of the first American Red Cross Disaster Team) and Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Mason City.

Marie was a devoted wife, nurturing mother and grandmother. Her family was extremely important to her.

Some of Marie’s favorite leisure activities and interests included being an avid gardener and reading.

Marie will be missed dearly by all who have shared in her life.

Those grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her children, Larry W. (Betty A.) Crowell of Littleton, Colo., Robert G. (Linda L.) Crowell, Richard J. (Beverly J.) Crowell, Gay L. (Stephen R.) Jensen, all of Mason City, and Bradley J. (Karla M.) Crowell of Littleton, Colo.; eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; three step-children, William Aarons of Morganton, N.C.; Andy Aarons of Asheville, N.C. and Annette Aarons of Clear Lake; three step-grandchildren; four brothers, Charles Gerk of Clear Lake, Arthur Gerk of Mason City, Donald Gerk of Mankato, Minn., and Bill Gerk of Tucson, Ariz.

BRITT — Gladys Marker, 84, of Britt, passed away Saturday (April 17, 2004) at Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral services for Gladys Marker will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church in Britt with the Rev. Dr. John Meyer and Janelle Siffring, AiM, officiating. Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West, Britt, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Gladys Elnora Draves was born on November 6, 1919, at Waltham, Minn., the daughter of Edward and Emma (Jorges) Draves. She attended country schools and graduated from Dows High School.


She was united in marriage to Carl Marker, on February 19, 1939, in Hampton, the start of a union of 64 years.

They farmed in the Dows-Galt, Iowa, area until moving to a farm north of Britt in 1948. Gladys was a farm wife and homemaker as well as being employed as a seamstress at Stitchcraft Corporation of Forest City and as school cook for Woden-Crystal Lake Schools.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Woden, and First Lutheran Church of Britt upon retirement. She was a member of the Women of the Church, Band Mothers, PTA, and served as officer and on various committees.

Gladys and Carl were members of the Silver Stars seniors group. She was an advocate for health and social concerns for seniors. Her work led to her nomination and receipt of an “Outstanding Senior Citizen Award” from then-Gov. Terry Branstad.

She loved cooking, gardening, sewing, camping and traveling, youth activities, and was always a welcoming hostess to neighbors, friends and family.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; husband Carl; son Arnold; grandsons Aaron and Eric Kipp; brothers Arthur, Carl, Clarence, Harry and Anton Draves; and sister Edna Eccles.

Gladys is survived by her daughter, Janet (Greg) Kipp of New Richmond, Wis.; son, Douglas of Rochester, Minn.; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Marker of Sauk Centre, Minn.; grandchildren, Timothy (Laura) Marker of Jackson, Minn., Thomas (Colleen) Marker of Mason, Ill., Andrea Jo (Jon) Green of New Richmond, Wis., and Kathryne Marker of Rochester, Minn.; and great-grandchildren Emily and John Marker of Jackson, Minn., and Danielle and Rebecca Marker of Mason, Ill. She is also survived by a brother, Emil Draves of Webster City; and sisters, Hilda Jury of Ankeny, and Estella State of Belmond; and many other relatives and friends.

GARNER — Dwight C. Bovenmyer, 73, of Garner, died Saturday (April 17, 2004) at his home surrounded by his family and friends.

His funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner with the Rev. Darrell Weber officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery.

Dwight Courtney Bovenmyer, the son of Carl and Dorothy (McCune) Bovenmyer, was born May 11, 1930, at Marshalltown. He graduated from Green Mountain High School in 1948. He continued his education and graduated from Marshalltown Business College.

On October 28, 1956, he was united in marriage to Vivian Stromer at Zion United Church of Christ in Garner.

He was employed by the Iowa Highway Commission and then farmed north of Garner until moving into Garner in 1984.

He was a member of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church where he served as a deacon, elder and an usher.

Dwight is survived by his wife, Vivian Bovenmyer of Garner; son, Kent Bovenmyer and wife, Rebecca, of Wilton; daughter, Joleen Rolland and husband, Steve, of Belmond; six grandchildren, Allan, Courtney and Therese Bovenmyer and Bruce, Markaya and Michael Rolland; sister, Beverly Parrott and husband, John, of Spokane, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Darlene Bovenmyer of Garwin; and his mother-in-law, Ruby Stromer, of Garner.

BRITT — Allen E. Smith, 76, of Clarinda, formerly of Britt, died Friday (April 16, 2004) at the Clarinda Hospital.

Allen Eugene Smith, the son of George Earl and Emily May (Aitchison) Smith, was born June 3, 1927, on a farm near Britt.

He was a resident of the Hancock County Care Center in Duncan where he was involved with the dairy operation. He later moved to Clarinda where he passed away at the age of 76. He enjoyed bicycle riding and country-western music.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Britt.

Allen is survived by his brother, Cliff Smith and his wife, Eileen, of Britt; his sister, Carol Lies of Bondurant; and many nieces and nephews.

BELMOND — Hattie E. Koenen, 97, of Belmond, passed away Sunday (April 18, 2004) at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.

Funeral services for Hattie Koenen will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Reformed Church in Meservey with Pastor Rodney Meester officiating. Burial will take place in the Meservey Cemetery.

Visitation for Hattie Koenen will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick Lane S. in Belmond and one hour prior to services at the church.

Hattie Ethel, the daughter of Peter and Margaret (Frohling) Steenblock was born Jan. 25, 1907, on a farm near Goodell. She attended country schools and then helped raise her brothers and sisters.

Hattie was united in marriage to Bernhard Koenen on Dec. 25, 1930, in George, Iowa, by Pastor Peter Koenen. The couple made their first home between Belmond and Meservey where they farmed.

Hattie and Bernhard would later live near Meservey and later near Belmond where they continued to farm and raise their family.

They moved into Belmond in November of 1977. Bernhard passed away in December of 1986. Hattie moved to the McBurney Apartments in 2000.

Hattie loved the outdoors, farming most of all.

She enjoyed flowers and gardening. She also enjoyed reading and crochet. Hattie’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant the world to her.

Hattie was member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey, where she was involved with the Reformed Church Women Missions.

Hattie is survived by a son, Byron and wife, Vergene, of Clear Lake; a daughter, Marjorie Jurgens and husband, Ronald, of Belmond; grandchildren, Valerie Koehler and husband, Wayne; Jeff Jurgens and wife, Jeanie; Renae Jones and husband, Joseph; Kimberly Johnson and husband, Darrin; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Richard Steenblock of Belmond.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband; four sisters and seven brothers.

MELVIN E. JENSEN


OSAGE — Melvin E. Jensen, 85, of Osage died Saturday (April 17, 2004) at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

Melvin was born Dec. 14, 1918, at Klemme, the son of Martin and Laura (Larsen) Jensen. The family moved to the Mitchell area in 1936.

Melvin graduated from Mitchell High School in 1937.

He married Mary Theis on June 24, 1948, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage.

Melvin farmed with his father, Martin, and his brother, Elmer, until 1967, when Elmer left farming and moved to Illinois.

He continued farming, with his sons joining him in the early 1970s. Melvin enjoyed feeding cattle and trading fat and feeder cattle at the South Saint Paul Stockyards for four decades.

He enjoyed bowling, playing softball, fishing trips to Canada, following the Minnesota Twins, attending tractor pulls, picking strawberries, dancing, and following his children and grandchildren in their activities.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

CLEAR LAKE — Orville S. Johnson, 83, of Clear Lake, died Sunday (April 18, 2004) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, with his family surrounding him.

A funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., in Mason City, with the Rev. Derik Yarian, of Zion Lutheran Church, in Clear Lake, will be officiating. Interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 122 W., Mason City, with military honors presented by Mason Veterans Memorial Association.

Orville was born Jan. 21, 1921, in Scarville. He attended schools in Mason City.

Orville served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following the war he came back to Mason City. He married Grace Anway.

He worked as a mechanic in Mason City and later for O’Brien Moving and Storage, also in Mason City.

Orville enjoyed working on cars, dancing at the V.F.W., sight-seeing, going to parks in Mason City and being with family and friends.

He was a member of the Mason City V.F.W.

Orville is survived by a son, Arnold Johnson, of Pennsylvania; brother, Larry Johnson and Sherri, of Lubbock, Texas; sister, Evelyn Vonhagen and her husband, Oliver, of Northwood; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Orville was preceded in death his parents, his wife, six brothers, Wayne, Norman, Clifford, Vernon, Kenneth and Leonard, and two sisters, Elaine and Pearl.

MASON CITY — Ellsworth B. Tevis, 73, of 20793 260th Street, died Sunday (April 18, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A church worship service will be held in Ellsworth’s honor at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Independent, 24 Third St. N.W. in Nora Springs. His son, Dennis, will give the message.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Charles Albert Guthrie Jr., 83, passed away on Sunday (April 18, 2004) at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham, Ala., after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Elmwood Chapel in Birmingham with burial in Elmwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Ridout’s-Brown Funeral Home.

Mr. Guthrie was born Aug. 20, 1920, in Fairfield, Ala. and was the only child to Charles Albert Guthrie Sr. and Alabama G. (Johnson) Guthrie. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1939.

On Dec. 1, 1940, he married Norma Pauline Black at Martin Memorial Methodist Church in Wylam, Ala. To this union were born three children.

Mr. Guthrie was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served in World War II.

He was member of the original crew which commissioned the USS Bon Homme Richard in 1944.

He was a life member of the Howlin’ Mad Smith Detachment of the Marine Corps.

Mr. Guthrie retired from Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Alabama in 1983 after 30 years of service. Upon his retirement he became a member of the Blue Cross-Blue Shield Trailblazers retiree group.

Mr. Guthrie was a member of Metro West Lodge #927 F & AM. He received his 50-year member certificate in 1998.

Mr. Guthrie was a long-time baseball umpire and basketball official on both the high school and college levels.

He was a member of the Bluff Park United Methodist Church.

Left behind to cherish his memories include his three children and their spouses: William A. (Janice) Guthrie Sr., of Midfield, Ala.; Ronald W. (Christa) Guthrie, of Mason City, Iowa; and Debra G. (Robert) Arnwine, of Hoover, Ala.; along with several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

His wife, Norma Guthrie, preceded him in death.
