OSAGE — Florence M. Badker, 88, of Osage, died Sunday (May 25, 2003) at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

MASON CITY — Paul Ray Meleney, 67, of 942 14th Street S.E., Mason City, died Saturday (May 24, 2003) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

A funeral Mass will be held at noon Wednesday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 5th Street S.E., Mason City, with the Reverend Chris Podhajsky officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday with a public scripture wake service at 6 p.m. at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street S.E., Mason City.

The family of Paul Ray Meleney has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Paul Ray Meleney Memorial Fund in his memory.

Paul Ray Meleney was born on September 11, 1935, in Mason City, the son of Harry and Pauline (Kirschbaum) Meleney. He attended and graduated from Holy Family Catholic High School in Mason City in 1954.

Paul was inducted into the U.S. Navy and served two years. Following his honorable discharge, he came back to Mason City. After working at various jobs he began working in 1975 for Fast Food Merchandisers as a driver until his retirement in 1997. After his retirement he worked part-time for Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapels and for Lane Brothers.

He was united in marriage to Sandy Hentges on June 5, 1979, in Mason City.

He enjoyed fishing and watching college and NBA basketball, and visiting with family and friends. Paul loved his family, and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sandy Meleney, of Mason City; his children, Linda (Donald) Cradduck of Augusta, Kan., Karen (Virgil) Pinegar of Andover, Kan., Carolyn (Robert) DeLancey of Des Moines, and Michele (Brian) White of McKinney, Texas; a step-daughter, Michelle Fisher, of Mason City; 10 grandchildren, David and Mark Cradduck, Jennifer, Sean and Stephen Pinegar, Christopher and Brandon Schoborg, Justin DeLancey, and Jonathan and Daniel White; two great- grandchildren, Bailey and Abby Cradduck; a brother, Leon Meleney and friend, Erma Burton, of Quincy, Illinois; three nephews and one niece; as well as other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers who died in infancy.

DUMONT — Victor H. Muhlenbruch, 78, of Dumont, died Saturday (May 24, 2003) at the Mercy Medical Health Center-North Iowa, East Campus in Mason City.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Dumont Reformed Church in Dumont with the Rev. Bob Scholten officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery.

GEORGE NEI

CLEAR LAKE — George Nei, 93, of 1613 W. 7th Ave. N., Clear Lake, died Saturday (May 24, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m.Wednesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Visitation will be one half-hour before the service on Wednesday. The family suggests memorials to Hospice of North Iowa.

George was born April 27, 1910, in Chicago, Ill. the son of Ambrose and Nettie Nei. He moved with his folks at an early age to Ventura where he attended school.

George moved back to Chicago to work with his brothers in the furniture and appliance business.

He married LaVina Johnson on Dec. 5, 1942, in Chicago. Following his retirement in 1973, they moved back to Clear Lake.

George enjoyed playing golf and cards with his friends and traveling.

George is survived by his wife LaVina Nei, Clear Lake; his son, Phillip Nei, Clear Lake; his sister, Dorothy Guiliani, Clear Water, Fla. and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers Peter, Phillip and Henry Nei; and one sister, Kathryn Wagner.

LUCILLE E. NESSETT

MASON CITY — Lucille E. Nessett, 90, of Mason City died Friday (May 23, 2003) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

Funeral services for Lucille will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth Street S.E., Mason City with Rev. Scott Duffus officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 North Pennsylvania Avenue.

Lucille was born March 31, 1913, the daughter of Dexter and Mabel (Gage) Bartholomew in Mason City. She attended school in Mason City. Lucille was united in marriage to Willard Nessett on August 9, 1932, in Austin, Minn. She was a longtime Mason City resident and an active member of St. James Lutheran Church.

Lucille was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She dearly loved all of her grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with her family. Until recently, Lucille was a foster grandparent at Tugs Daycare, and treated every child there like one of her own. Lucille also enjoyed time doing crafts at St. James Lutheran Church.

Those left to cherish Lucille’s memory are her son, Robert Nessett and wife, Judy, of Mason City; her daughter, Shirley Schaffer and husband, Darrel, of Bolingbrook, Ill.; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; and her sister, Madelene Weitzel of Mason City

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Willard; two sisters, Marie Anderson and Madge Nelson; and one brother in infancy.

VENTURA — Henrietta “Etta” Tibbits, 88, of 5 Crystal Heights, Ventura, died Saturday (May 24, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City. Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m.Wednesday at the Ventura United Methodist Church, Ventura, Iowa with the Rev. Audrey Westendorf-Young officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake and then one hour before the service on Wednesday at the church. The family suggests memorials to Hospice of North Iowa.

Etta was born in Klemme, the daughter of John P. and Christina (Ennenga) Christians. She attended school in Garner.

Etta married Arthur LeRoy Tibbits on Nov. 20, 1934, in Waseca, Minn. She worked with her husband in Hanford, Washington, and later, Oak Ridge, Tenn. in the atomic plants. She moved with her husband to many different cities while he was in the U.S. Army.

They moved to the farm five miles north of Ventura in 1947 and lived there until 1976, then moved to their present home.

Etta enjoyed playing cards with her sisters, sewing and doing crafts. She was a member of Ventura United Methodist Church, Women’s Club, RH Club and the Ventura Senior Citizens.

Etta is survived by her two sisters, Sena Christensen and her husband, LaVern, Clear Lake, and Elsie Wilson and her husband Bill, Ventura; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Christians, Garner, Ione Nuehring, Mason City, and Doris Martin, Floyd; her brother-in-law, Donald Tibbits, Forest City; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; eight brothers and three sisters.

MASON CITY - Clarice F. Williamson, 100, a resident of the IOOF Home in Mason City, died Saturday, (May 25, 2003), at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Bill Poland officiating. Interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and for one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Wesley United Methodist Church or to the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Clarice was born May 19, 1903, in Earlham, Iowa, the daughter of Benjamin and Sarah (Bechtel) Gannon. She graduated from Earlham High School, and on Sept. 17, 1927, she was united in marriage to George H. Williamson at Adel. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Clarice enjoyed playing cards and crocheting, but her greatest joy came from visits from her daughters and grandchildren.

Clarice is survived and lovingly remembered by: daughters Carol King and her husband Duane "Bud" of Mason City; Marlene Oswood and her husband Wayne of Mason City; Judith Philips and her husband Don of Aurora, Colo.; grandchildren: Thomas Younke of Mason City; Laura Payer and her husband Rick of Mason City; David Younke and his wife Denise of Cedar Rapids; Terry King and his wife Lois of Duluth, Minn.; Julie Fox and her husband Frank of Mason City; Jon Oswood and his wife Michele of Cedar Rapids; Janine Petitgout and her husband Craig of Coralville; Matthew Philips and his wife Kady of Aurora, Colo.; Lisa Philips of Aurora, Colo.; great-grandchildren Andrew and Linsay Beavers, Johnathon Payer, Lucas and Caleb Younke, Tyler, Kaitlin and Carter Oswood, Sidney and Rylee Petitgout, and Emily, Anna, and Sarah King, and many nieces and nephews, as well as many friends.

Clarice was preceded in death by her husband George, her parents, and her sisters: Grace Fry, Naomi Stubbs, Ruth Smith, and Ruby Olsen.

Florence was born on Jan. 28, 1915, in Riceville, the daughter of James and Emma (Auringer) Dargan. She married George Badker Sr. on March 19, 1931, in Adams, Minn. They made their home in the Osage area. George Sr. died March 11, 1992.

Florence enjoyed crossword puzzles, crocheting, and her family.

She is survived by three daughters, Mary Perrin (Dick), Osage; Norma Colgrove (Don), Black Hawk, S.D.; Nancy Potter, Osage; four sons, Gregory Badker, Osage; Larry Badker (Isabel), Platteville, Colo.; Doug Badker, (Sue), Osage; Bernie Badker (Deidre), New Hartford; one brother, Paul Dargan, Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Rosemary Kinter, Des Moines, and Agnes Kleckner, Osage; 41 grandchildren, 93 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Emma Dargan; husband George Badker Sr.; two sons, George Badker Jr., and an infant son, William; one daughter, Constance Duren; three brothers, one sister, two grandsons, two granddaughters, and one great-grandson.

Mason City - Margaret Ruth (Marge) Rodewald, 92, of 302 Second St. N.E, Mason City, died Sunday (May 25, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City, with Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St., N.E., Mason City, with an Athenian Rosary at 5:30 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 6:30 p.m. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City.

Marge was born Nov. 20, 1910, in Charles City, the daughter of Frank and Cora (Holbrook) Rabe. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1926. Following high school she moved to St. Paul, Minn., where she was secretary for a district judge.

She married Leo E. Rodewald (also of Charles City) May 16, 1936, in St. Paul, Minn. They lived in Osage where they owned and operated a meat market and later moved to Webster City where they owned and operated a grocery store meat market. In 1949 they moved to Mason City where she was a homemaker and later worked with her husband in the New York Life Insurance business.

Marge and her husband spent many hours visiting and sharing with people in the Mason City nursing homes. She was well known as "The Story Lady" at Good Shepherd for many years. She was also involved with the Red Cross, and was spokesperson and president of the Right For Life. She headed up the campaign that was responsible for the Mason City tornado warning sirens. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Church Circles and the Athenian Study Club.

She will be sadly missed by her children, Connie Clapsaddle, Mason City; Terry Rodewald and his wife Linda, St. Louis, Mo.; and Mary Margaret McFee, and her husband Randall, Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughter-in-law Diane Rodewald, San Diego, Calif.; her 17 grandchildren; her ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son David, two grandsons, David and Steven Clapsaddle, three sisters and three brothers.

Clear Lake - Ruby M. Kurtz, 90, a resident of the Oakwood Manor Care Center in Clear Lake, formerly of Klemme, died Monday (May 26, 2003) at the Oakwood Manor Care Center in Clear Lake.

Funeral services are tentatively set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Klemme United Methodist Church in Klemme. The Rev. Paddy Druhl will officiate.

Visitation will be Friday at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home, 528 E. Main St., Klemme at a time to be determined.

MYRTLE SHORMAN CLARK

GREENE - Funeral services for Myrtle M. Shorman Clark, 86, of 302 N. Main, Greene, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with the Rev. Paul Uzel officiating.

Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Reid's Funeral Chapel of Greene is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, where there will be a public Scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Wednesday one hour before services.

Myrtle Mae Heichel was born March 9, 1917, at rural Washburn, Black Hawk County, a daughter of Freace and Dagmar (Rasmussen) Heichel, and died Sunday (May 25, 2003), at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

She received her education in the Cedar Falls Public Schools and was united in marriage to George Shorman on Sept. 30, 1934, in Princeton, Mo.

They made their home in Cedar Falls where they owned and operated a Texaco Service Station. In 1945 they moved to Greene where they purchased the Greene Cafe, which they operated until 1949, when they acquired Price's Grocery Store and made it into a restaurant and bar which was called Shorman's Place. In 1955 they purchased the Sportsman's Inn from Max Kent.

Following Mr. Shorman's death on Nov. 21, 1961, she continued to operate the business until 1964.

On July 10, 1964, she was united in marriage to Wilson Eldon Clark at her home in Greene. They moved to Northern Wisconsin where they purchased the Chit Chat Resort in Birchwood, which they operated until 1973, when they retired to a 40-acre farm near Couderay, Wis.

In 1990 they returned to Greene. Following Mr. Clark's death on Feb. 16, 1992, she continued to make her home in Greene until entering the Liebe Care Center on June 26, 2001.

Myrtle will be remembered as a helpful, caring, and giving individual in her vocations as wife, mother, and business owner. Many will attest to those home cooked meals, desserts, and genuine hospitality to those she served.

Her interests included deer hunting, fishing, gardening, and crafts. She also enjoyed bowling. Her family was very important to her, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those thankful for having shared her life include her daughter whom she lovingly called her "Doll," Virginia (Stan) Shook of Greene; four grandchildren: Janelle (Jeffrey) Laube, Randal (Sheila) Shook all of Eau Claire, Wis., Steven (Kimberly) Shook of Plymouth, Minn., Linda Miner of New Brighton, Minn.; ten grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Jenna, Mikaelah, Benjamin, Sarah, Joseph, John, Ryan, Conor, and Lee; one brother, Glade Heichel of Greene and one sister-in-law, Inez Heichel of Waterloo.

She leaves to join her husbands, her parents, four brothers: Hershel, Freace "Pete," Russell, and John Heichel; four sisters: Gladys Morgan, Jane Rogers, Norma Gutknecht, and Mary Brown.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Myrtle Shorman Clark Memorial Fund in care of the family.

GARNER — George A. Stille, 88, of Garner, formerly of the Goodell and Klemme areas, passed away Sunday (May 25, 2003) at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Goodell with Pastor Paddy Druhl officiating. Burial will take place in the Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South in Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church Thursday.

George Allen, the son of J.J. and Clara Gast Stille, was born Oct. 11, 1914, near Klemme. George grew up near Klemme, where he attended country schools.

George was united in marriage to Ina A. Berghefer on Oct. 16, 1934, at the parsonage in Klemme. The couple made their home in Spencer, where George worked on road construction for seven years.

George and Ina returned to Goodell in 1941. George worked for Hancock County road crew and maintainer for 36 years. George and Ina live east of Goodell for 50 years.

They moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner in 1998.

George was a member of the United Methodist Church in Goodell.

George is survived by his wife, Ina; two daughters, Maxine Dresbach and husband, Mac, of Mason City, Sharyl Stadtlander and husband, Marlin, of Garner; three sons, Wayne and wife, Gloria, of Goodell, Kenton of Poolsville, Texas, Lynn and wife, Janice, of Davenport; 15 grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren; two sisters, Fern Carlson of Clear Lake, and Lucille Bridges and husband, Cecil, of Thornton; two sisters-in-law, Grace of Klemme and Minnie of Clear Lake, and numerous other relatives and friends.

Lee was born Aug. 24, 1924, in Amarillo, Texas, the son of Corbett E. and Gladys (Robertson) Freeman. Lee graduated from Pacific University.

He served in the U.S. Navy from May 1942 to July 1949 having been stationed in the South Pacific, New Zealand and New Caledonia, and received the World War II Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, American Defense Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the Navy Occupation Medal.

Lee worked as a manager for IBM in San Jose, Calif., Stockton, Calif., and Niwot, Colo., for 27 years, retiring in 1982.

He married Ann Winter Johnson Ray on Dec. 15, 1988, in Mason City. They moved back to Mason City in 1989.

Lee was a member of the First Congregation United Church of Christ and was a life member of the VFW.

Lee is survived by his wife, Ann W. Freeman, Mason City; daughters, Tara Humphrey and her husband, Cris, Bayard, Neb., Jewell Clark, Los Gatos, Calif., and Norelyn Petz, Stockton, Calif.; a son, Rob Freeman and his wife, Pat, Springfield, Mo.; stepchildren, Lisa Ray, Mason City, and Amy Hunter, Wilton, N.H.; grandchildren, Jake Humphrey, Bayard, Neb., and Christopher Freeman and Melissa Freeman, Minneapolis, Minn.; step-grandson, Ian Hunter, Wilton, N.H.; numerous great-grandchildren; a sister, Wanda Richison, Stockton, Calif., and a brother, Lowell Pettite, Stockton, Calif.

MASON CITY — Hubert W. “Hugh” LaPole, 76, of 1202 S. Federal Ave., died Monday (May 12, 2003) at the IOOF Home, Mason City.

A memorial Mass will be held at noon Friday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating. Inurnment will be in Elmwood Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Hugh was born Nov. 30, 1926, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Hubert and Florence (Roblin) LaPole. He graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1945.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy that same year and was honorably discharged in 1947.

Following his discharge, Hugh returned to Waterloo, where he owned and operated a root beer stand and Tasty Freeze as well as a camera shop in Black’s Department Store. Hugh also worked as a real estate broker in Waterloo and in 1969 moved to Michigan, where he worked for many years in the jewelry industry, owning and operating HLP Inc., a jewelry business.

He retired in 1994, moving to Mason City in 1998. Hugh was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church; loved sports, kids and dogs; and was inseparable from his dog, Brandy.

Hugh is survived by his wife, Aila Rose LaPole of Mason City; son, Hubert “Chip” LaPole III and wife, Tonette, of Waterloo; step-daughters, Candyce Stephenson and husband, Charles, of Mason City, Paula Wells and husband, Michael, of Southgate, Mich., and Debra Patterson and husband, Rusty, of Woodbury, Minn.; step-sons, Jerry Price and wife, Diane, of Warren, Mich., and Mark Price and wife, Colleen, of Westland, Mich.; sister, Shirley Schuler and husband, Carl, of Waterloo; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews

MILES JOHN SULLIVAN

CLIFTON, Va. — Miles John Sullivan, 77, formerly of Charles City, died at his home in Clifton, Va., Thursday (May 22, 2003) after a long illness.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Everly Funeral Home in Fairfax, Va. His body was cremated and will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Miles “Bud” Sullivan was born in Charles City on Nov. 7, 1925, the son of Frank and Kathryn Sullivan. He and the former Mavis Jung of Charles City were married at St. John Lutheran Church in Charles City on March 14, 1948.

On June 1, 1943, less than a month following his graduation from Charles City High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy. Upon completion of his training, he was assigned as a bombardier aboard a Navy Liberator. Late in 1945, the bomber was shot down near the Philippine Islands by Japanese fighters. Sullivan and six crewmates were rescued by Filipino fishermen and treated for their injuries. After recuperating for several days, he and a crewmate traveled by sailboat, horse-cart, landing craft and Jeep to reach allied lines and help arrange for rescuing the balance of the crew.

He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions.

Upon his discharge from the Navy in Minneapolis on Nov. 18, 1945, he enrolled at the University of Iowa, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering and a commission as first lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

After graduation, he worked first at the Oliver Corp. in Charles City and later with Trane Corp. in La Crosse, Wis.

In 1958, Sullivan accepted a post with the United States Agency for International Development in New Delhi, India. The Sullivan family lived in India until 1962, at which time Sullivan was transferred to Karachi, Pakistan, where he remained until 1965.

In 1966 he accepted a temporary assignment with USAID in Dacca, East Pakistan, and then transferred from the Department of State to the Department of Commerce, where he remained until his retirement in 1981 as chief of loan administration for the Economic Development Administration.

Surviving in addition to Mavis, his wife of 55 years, are sons, Michael (Dora) of Cape Charles, Va., Daniel (Jennifer) of Mohave Valley, Ariz., and Steven (Cynthia) of King George, Va.; daughter, Kathryn of Fredericksburg, Va.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Ken Sullivan of Swisher, Iowa, and his mother-in-law, Mabel Hansen of Charles City.

The family suggests that memorial contributions in Miles’ name may be made to the Burke, Va., Fire and Rescue Service in acknowledgement of assistance provided during his illness. ROCHESTER, Minn. — Dennis Jay Marker, 41, of 1207 4 1/2 St. N.W., died Tuesday (May 13, 2003). He drowned accidentally in the Zumbro River.

Luella was born June 1, 1911, in rural Rudd, the daughter of Harvey and Marie (Baumgart) Roy. She attended school in Rudd.

She married Vance T. Swanson Oct. 21, 1933, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City. The couple farmed in the Rock Falls and Plymouth area for over 36 years. They moved to Manly in 1970.

She worked at Wurn Grocery store, Donut House and Reblow Ranch in Manly.

Luella enjoyed growing flowers, working in the garden, and especially spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Manly.

INGELWOOD, Calif. — Robert Wesley Kitto, 72, formerly of Mason City, died April 4, 2003, in Ingelwood, Calif.

Robert Wesley Kitto was born May 18, 1930, in Dubuque, Iowa. He grew up in Mason City and graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1949.

Robert served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1950-1953, serving in the Korean War. He earned the Korean Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the United Nations Service Medal and the Good Conduct Award.

In July 1955, Robert married Beverly Hawkins and they moved to Hawthorne, Calif., where he worked for TRW for 35 years, retiring in 1990.

His loving wife, Beverly, and sons, David Kitto and Michael Kitto, survive him.

There was a memorial service on April 22, 2003, at White & Day Mortuary, 3215 Sepulveda Boulevard, Manhatten Beach, Calif.

LOUISIANA, Mo. — Mrs. Margaret Lucille “Peggy” Grupp, 77, died Monday (March 3, 2003) at Maple Grove Nursing Home in Louisiana, Mo.

A memorial service will be held in July in Mason City. Her remains were cremated and will be interred at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Mrs. Grupp was born Jan. 7, 1926, in Louisiana, Mo., to William H. Green and Lucy Protzman Green.

She married Roger W. Grupp June 15, 1947, at First Presbyterian Church in Louisiana, Mo., and he preceded her in death May 27, 2000.

Mrs. Grupp is survived by two sons, William Grupp of Louisiana, Mo., and Eric Grupp of Severna Park, Md.; two daughters, Rebecca McCain of Mahomet, Ill., and Margaret “Margy” Lienhard of Louisiana, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by a brother, William Green who died in 1943.

She and her husband owned and operated a grocery store in Mason City until they retired. They moved to Louisiana in 1973 to make their home.

After returning to Louisiana, she and her daughter, Margaret, owned and operated “Margy’s Bagatelle” in Louisiana for 15 years.

Mrs. Grupp earned her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1947. She was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Louisiana. A 56-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Louisiana Historical Society, Garden Club and Herb Club.

Mrs. Grupp was an avid ham radio operator and enjoyed bowling.

KLEMME — Ruby M. Kurtz, 90, a native of Klemme and a resident of the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake for the past 10 and one-half years, died Monday (May 25, 2003) at the care center.

Ruby Miller was born Sept. 24, 1912, in Thornton, Iowa, the daughter of Erastus and Margaret (Hansen) Miller. In her youth she was raised by her grandparents, Hans and Bessie Hansen. She attended Klemme schools, graduating in 1931.

Ruby was united in marriage to William (Bill) H. Kurtz on Feb. 21, 1933, at Klemme United Methodist Church par-sonage. Following their marriage, the couple moved to her grandfather’s farm which Hans Hansen had homesteaded.

In addition to assisting her husband with the farming duties, Ruby was a life-long home maker. She very much enjoyed times spent with her children and grandchildren. Ruby always looked forward to hosting family gatherings, especially their annual Christ-mas Eve gathering. She liked to follow the many activities of her grandchildren and kept many newspaper articles and clippings of their accomplishments.

After her husband’s death in 1966, Ruby purchased a home in Klemme, living there for 16 years.

While in the town of Klem-me, she was able to take part in many more activities. Ruby enjoyed traveling to visit her daughter, playing cards, cross stitch, and visiting with her friends and family. She was a long-time member of the Grandmother’s Club in Klem-me and the UMCW at Klemme United Methodist Church where she was a member. Ruby also enjoyed raising flowers.

In 1982 she moved to Prairie View in Garner, living there for 10 years. She then moved to Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Those left to cherish the memory of her life include her son, William R. “Bill” and his wife, LeeAnn Kurtz, Klemme; a daughter, Karen K. Bender, Madison, Ala.; six granddaughters, Kim Ann Hinrichsen and husband, Mark, Osage, Kay Trampel, Belmond, Karo Bratrud and husband, Scott, Clear Lake, Konnie Larson and husband, Donald, Garner, Michelle Bender, St. Cloud, Minn., and Tracy Bender, Madison, Ala.; and 13 great-grandchildren.

PLENTYWOOD, Mont. — Jacob “Jake” Hoffarth, 77, died Tuesday (May 27, 2003) at Sheridan Memorial Hospital in Plentywood, Mont.

Jake was born in Outlook, Mont., on July 17, 1925, one of eleven children born to Frederick and Rosa (Melle) Hoffarth.

He married Patricia A. Fishbeck on Nov. 1, 1948, in Great Falls, Mont. They lived in Plentywood until 1953, when they moved to Grafton, Iowa, where they farmed until 1968. They then moved to Phoenix, Ariz., where they remained until they returned to Plentywood May 1, 1998.

Jake’s hobbies included furniture refinishing and playing cards. He was very devoted to his family, was a good provider and an-all-around good dad.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Patricia; his parents; brothers, Roy, Frank and infant brother, Joe, and his sisters, Cecelia and Elizabeth.

Jake is survived by his daughter, Dawn Lovstad of Phoenix, Ariz.; his sons, Ranny Hoffarth of Grafton, Iowa, and Gib Hoffarth of Crescent, Iowa; daugther Edie Prazak (Mike); daughter Darcee Hoffarth; his foster daughter, Joany Holmes (Tom), all of Grafton, Iowa; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

WESLEY — Amy Elisabeth Dornbier, 32, died Wednesday (May 28, 2003) at Kossuth Reg-ional Health Center, Algona.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, Corwith, with the Rev. Dan Fernandez officiating. Interment will be in Corwith Cemetery.

Amy Elisabeth Dornbier was born on April 21, 1971, in the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, to Norman and Dianne Landsberg Chambers. As a young girl, Amy was active in Brownies, Girl Scouts and 4-H, where she showed cattle at the county fair. One year, her calf was the top-selling steer.

She graduated from C-W-L High School in Corwith in 1989. While in school, Amy was a cheerleader and was active in vocal music and played the flute in the band.

Amy received her associate of arts degree from North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City. She then attended St. Catherine’s College in St. Paul, Minn., for one year and received an OCTA degree from Austin Community College in Austin, Minn., graduating with honors.

Amy was married to Derwin Dornbier on July 9, 1994, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley. The couple lived on a farm near Wesley, where Derwin farmed.

Amy worked at Rehab Vis-ions in Fort Dodge for eight and one-half years, and re-cently was employed at Millennium Rehab of Fort Dodge.

She was a member of the Corwith United Methodist Church. She enjoyed putting together photo albums and working on the family tree, but her greatest joy in life was being with her many friends and family, especially her two precious little girls, Sydney and Ryley.

Amy died suddenly on Wednesday (May 28, 2003) from injuries sustained in an auto accident south of Sexton, Iowa. She was 32.

Amy is survived by her loving husband, Derwin Dornbier, and her daughters, Sydney and Ryley, rural Wesley. Also surviving are her parents, Norman and Dianne Chambers, rural Corwith; her brother, Jonathan Chambers and wife, Paula, rural Corwith; and her sister, Emily Stevens and husband, Chad, Norwalk. Other survivers include her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Rosemary Snyder, Wesley, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts and uncles.

Amy was preceded in death by her sister, Laura; her grandparents, Ed and Mona Landsberg and Earl and Lillian Chambers; her uncle, Robert Chambers, and her aunt, Joan Chambers.

WAUKON — Carol J. Stock, 60, died Wednesday (May 28, 2003) at Northgate Care Center, Waukon, following a battle with cancer.

Carol Jean Thompson Stock was born on March 26, 1943, in Forest City, the oldest child of Walter A. and Bernice (Reynolds) Thompson. She was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Britt, attended rural elementary schools and graduated from Britt High School in 1961.

In 1961 she married Robert Madison. They were later divorced.

Carol attended NEICC in Calmar, Iowa, and graduated from its clerical program in 1974.

On Aug. 7, 1976, she married Roger W. Stock at the Zalmona Presbyterian Church. They farmed in Allamakee County until 1995.

Carol worked as a travel agent in Decorah from 1974 until 1989. She enjoyed working with her clients and helping them find the best deals.

Carol and Roger were members of the Allamakee Antique Auto Club. She en-joyed helping on the farm, sewing, making crafts, reading mystery novels and boating on the Mississippi River. She particularly liked spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include her be-loved husband, Roger, of Wau-kon; a son, Keith Madison and his special friend, Laura Graham, and her children, Philip and Chelsie, of Frenchtown, Mont.; four sisters, Linda Davis and Donna (Elgie) Maiden, both of Warsaw, Mo., Rita (George) Rogers of Edwards, Mo., and Becky (Terry) McManus of Leavenworth, Kan.; a brother, Walter Thompson of Kansas City, Mo.; 18 nieces and nephews, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, her mother and father-in-law, a niece and a nephew.

BELMOND — Milton L. “Pete” Followwill, 73, passed away Thursday (May 29, 2003) at Belmond Medical Center.

Milton L. “Pete” Followwill, the son of Matthew and Olah Martin Followwill, was born March 11, 1930, in Centerville, Iowa. Pete grew up in Centerville and graduated from Centerville High School in 1948.

Pete entered the U.S. Air Force in 1950, where he at-tained the rank of staff sergeant and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1954.

Pete was united in marri-age to Jeanette E. Meyer on Jan. 15, 1956, in Manly. To this union, two children were born. The couple made their home in Belmond, where they raised their family.

In 1954, Pete was a salesman for Followwill Implement in Belmond and became co-owner in 1956. In 1970, he became owner-operator of the Followwill Implement John Deere dealership and continued through 1982, when he retired.

Pete thoroughly enjoyed his grandsons. Pete loved golfing and sports. He gave generously to the church and community. Pete was a member of the Belmond Jaycees and a founding board member of the Belmond Country Club. Pete was a member of the United Methodist Church in Belmond.

Pete Followwill is survived by his wife, Jeanette, of Belmond; daughter, Julie A. Hegge of Osceola, Wis., and her children, Anthony Hegge and his wife, Barb, and their son, Bryce of Monticello, Minn., and Andrew Hegge of Osceola, Wis.; son Jerry L. Followwill, M.D., and his wife, Kim, of Victoria, Texas, and their children, Sam and Tom. He is also survived by his brother, Dorwin Followwill, and sisters, Margaret Hawk and Pat Bivins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

MANLY - Francis J. Pietersen, 89, of Manly, died Wednesday (May 28, 2003) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Francis was born April 8, 1914, in Hampton, the son of Johnnes and Anna (Otterson) Pietersen. He attended schools in Hampton, Fort Dodge and Mason City. One of his first jobs was carrying the Mason City Globe Gazette.

In 1930, Francis began an apprenticeship at the Walter Irving Laboratory and Supply Co. in Mason City as a dental laboratory tech.

He was married to Thelma Dahl on Aug. 26, 1933, in Mason City. She preceded him in death in April 1978.

He was married to Marcia McNamara on July 22, 1978, in Mason City.

Francis served in the U. S. Army during World War II and was stationed on the island of Tinian and Fucuoco, Japan. He was awarded the American Theatre Service Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged with a rating of T/5 as a dental tech.

He returned to Mason City to work for the Irving Laboratory and purchased the company in 1951. The name was changed to the North Iowa Dental Laboratory, which manufactured oral prosthetic appliances for the dental profession. The company was sold in 1991 when Francis retired.

He enjoyed woodworking as a hobby. He was a "Good Neighbor" for Shopsmith. He made many toys. He was active in the American Red Cross for many years and served as chairman of the North Iowa Disaster Team. He also enjoyed music. He was a member of First Covenant Church and the Iowa Dental Laboratory Association.
