ALGONA — Herman “Butch” Anderson, 54, of Algona, died Sunday (May 4, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

WILBUR G. DALLUGE

MASON CITY — Wilbur G. Dalluge, 90, of 939 N. Federal Ave., died Monday (May 5, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N. E., Mason City. Burial will be at Grafton Cemetery in Grafton, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the Wilbur G. Dalluge Memorial Fund.

Wilbur was born August 26, 1912, on the family farm near Grafton to Henry and Sophie (Walk) Dalluge. He grew up there and graduated from the Grafton High School.

Wilbur farmed and sold cars in the Grafton area until the early ’70s when he moved to Mason City where he continued in the auto business as Webb Auto Co.

In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, but cars were his true passion.

Wilbur is survived by three children, Mrs. Robert (Sharon) Bendickson of Lawrence, Kan., Ronald (Cheryl) Dalluge of Mason City, and Mrs. Dennis (Robin) Hart of Mason City; one son-in-law, Eugene Leach, of Minneapolis, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Mrs. George (Julie) Harbert, Robert (Dee Dee) Bendickson Jr., Mrs. Maclane (Holly) Powell, Mrs. Brian (Kimberly) Barlow, Brian Dalluge, Chad Hart, and Chelsia Hart; and six great grandchildren, Tyler, Mason, and Haven Harbert, Ashley Dalluge, Dakota Bendickson, and Seleena Dalluge.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Barbara Leach; four brothers; and one sister.

HARBERT D. DIEKHUIS JR.

CLEAR LAKE — Harbert D. (Herb) Diekhuis Jr., 78, of 629 Seventh Ave. N., died Sunday (May 4, 2003) at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Keith Scott, of Wesley United Methodist Church, Mason City, officiating. Interment will follow at Concord Cemetery, Garner. Military honors will be by the V.F.W. Post 5515 of Garner.

Visitation will begin at noon preceding the service.

Memorials may be directed in his name to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of North Iowa.

Harbert was born Sept. 12, 1924, at home in rural Klemme, the son of Harbert D. and Martha (Sanderfeld) Diekhuis Sr. The family moved to the Goodell vicinity where they farmed for approximately eight years. In 1935, the family moved to Garner for about 13 years. He started as a carpenter for two years.

Harbert was drafted into the Army during World War II and fought in five major battles. He received several medals including a Purple Heart.

Harbert married Jeanette Richardson July 15, 1956, in Garner. He worked as a farmhand and went to Hamilton’s Business College in bookkeeping. Harbert worked at the Dairy Queen, as a butcher at a meat locker, then at a lumberyard, then back to the meat locker, and also Johnson Grocery Store, Garner. Following that, he worked at the creamery, bottling milk, making butter and deliveries.

Harbert opened two service stations in Rockwell, Herb’s Standard, and opened up a station near Mason City East Park.

In 1969, they moved to Hobby Acres Chicken Farm in Mason City. He worked at Opportunity Village as a cottage director for years. After retiring, he worked part-time for ABC Lock Service, and fully retired in 2001. They have been living in Clear Lake.

He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, Mason City.

Harbert enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, watching football, golfing, working as a locksmith, and especially spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Diekhuis, Clear Lake; four children, Martha Jeanette Norem, Iowa Falls, David Diekhuis, Mason City, Dennis Diekhuis and his wife, Vickie, Clear Lake, and Mary Ann Jansen and her husband, Randy, Des Moines; six grandchildren, Joanne Wilson and her husband, Jason, Chad Henry, Crystal Henry, Kayla Jansen, Brady Jansen and Jacob Diekhuis; one brother, Marvin Diekhuis and his wife, Phyllis, Garner; and several nieces and nephews.

Harbert was preceded in death by his parents; a great-grandson, Eric Wilson; and three brothers, John, Irving and Harry Diekhuis.

HELEN M. HUZL

MASON CITY — Helen M. Huzl, 89, of 410 South Van Buren Ave., Mason City, died Sunday (May 4, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the WaySide Chapel of the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Douglas Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and will continue one hour before service time at the church Wednesday.

Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church in memory of Helen M. Huzl.

Helen was born Aug. 13, 1913, in Mason City, the daughter of Frank J. and Frances (Jecmen) Huzl. She attended school here in Mason City.

She worked at Chicago Meat and Grocery for many years and several years at Roller City Skating Rink.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and belonged to Western Fraternal Life Association (W.F.L.A.) for more than 50 years.

Helen is survived by her brother, Frank J. Huzl, Mason City; a niece, Plyllis F. Murphy, Mason City; nephews, Jack E. Huzl and wife, Linda, Dubuque, and James F. Huzl and wife, Cathy, Charlotte, N.C.; great nieces, Emily Huzl, Charlotte, N.C., and Kara Huzl, Dubuque; and great nephews, Michael Huzl, Charlotte, N.C., Chad Huzl, Dustin Huzl and Christopher Huzl, Dubuque.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Julia Zemanek in 1994; her sister-in-law, Joy Huzl in 1984; her brother-in-law, Tony Zemanek in 1988; and her nephew, David Murphy in 1999.

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — Clara Jacobs, 92, a resident of Bloomington, Minn., formerly of Charles City, died Saturday (May 3, 2003) at Martin Luther Manor in Bloomington.

IOWA FALLS — Richard John Kaldenberg, 66, died Sunday (May 4, 2003) at his rural Iowa Falls home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Linn’s Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel.

DENNIS R. LARSON

OWATONNA, Minn. — Dennis R. Larson, 60, died Sunday (May 4, 2003) at Owatonna Hospital after a long battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church in Owatonna. The Rev. Victor Jortack will be officiating.

Memorials may be directed to Owatonna Hospice or the donor’s choice.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Michaelson Funeral Home, 1930 Austin Road, Owatonna, and will continue from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Dennis was born Aug. 28, 1942, in Forest City, Iowa, the son of Richard and Naomi (Larson) Larson. He graduated from Forest City High School in 1960. He enlisted in and served with the Army National Guard for three years following graduation.

He married Diane K. Askeland July 11, 1964, in Mason City, Iowa. They moved to Owatonna in 1969.

Dennis was the regional sales manager for Forney Industries for 18 years until ill health forced his retirement.

Dennis enjoyed boating, fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed his yard and working on motors. He was a member of the Elks and Eagles Club.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Diane Larson, of Owatonna, Minn., his sons, Richard Larson and his wife, Lori, of Lakeville, Minn., and Dan Larson and his wife, Deb, of Claremont, Minn.; his mother, Naomi Larson of Missouri; his sister, Judy Gjerde of Missouri; his brother, Gary Larson, of Landers, Wyo.; and six grandchildren.

He was proceded in death by his father and a nephew.

JOAN ALBERTA MOLSBERRY

GRAFTON — Joan Alberta Molsberry, 76, of rural Grafton, died Sunday (May 4, 2003) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City after a courageous battle with cancer.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly, with the Rev. David G. Kucera and Monsignor Joseph Slepicka officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 East Spring Street, Manly, with a public scripture wake service beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Joan Alberta Molsberry, the daughter of William and Mary Stella (Mayme) Brennan, was born on Aug. 21, 1926, in Des Moines. She graduated from Manly High School in 1944 and graduated from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1947.

She was united in marriage to Robert Molsberry on July 31, 1948. After their marriage, they farmed together two miles southwest of Grafton where they raised their three children.

Joan was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Plymouth.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Molsberry, of rural Grafton; three children, Mary Jo Molsberry and her friend, Gary Heit, of Minneapolis, Minn., Michael Molsberry and his wife, Marcia, of St. Ansgar, and Kevin Molsberry and his wife. Lisa, of Algona; five grandchildren, Amy Molsberry of Osage, Sgt. Ben was born March 12, 1913, the son of Harry and Hazel (Meacham) Vierkant. He farmed around the Mason City area his entire life.

Ben married Hazel Johnson June 7, 1934, in Rockford. To this union were born two children, Lois Vierkant Haas and Robert Vierkant.

Hazel preceded Ben in death in November of 1960. Ben then married Hilda Dierks in October of 1961. She preceded him in death in March of 2001.

Ben was a member of Ducks Unlimited and the Elks Lodge.

Ben is survived by one daughter, Lois Haas of Satsuma, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Eileen Butz of Clear Lake; a grandson; Alan Vierkant and his wife, Kari, of Allegan, Mich.; a granddaughter, Julie Poole and husband, Richard, of San Mateo, Fla.; five great-grandchildren, Kristen, Bradley and Stephanie Vierkant, Tiffany and Jonathan Crosby; two brothers, Harry Vierkant of Citrus Heights, Calif., and Elmer Vierkant of Descanso, Calif.; three sisters, Ruth Kohler of Mason City, Hazel Darg and husband, Bob, of Rockwell, Helen Parks and husband, Vic, of Rockwell; step-son, Dr. Delmar Diercks and wife, Len, of Mason City; eight step-grandchildren; nine step-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

MATTHEW AARON TERRILL

OAK HARBOR, Wash. — Matthew Aaron Terrill, 13, of Oak Harbor, died suddenly on April 21, 2003, at his home.

Matthew was born May 2, 1989, in Coupeville. He lived his entire life in Oak Harbor, where he attended Clover Valley Elementary School and was currently in the eighth grade at Oak Harbor Middle School.

Matthew loved sports, especially basketball and soccer. He also enjoyed playing computer games.

He loved to read and especially enjoyed reading science fiction and fantasy books.

He was excited about his music and wanting to learn drums and guitar. Matthew was in the process of writing a book about D-Day. He had spoken of being a history teacher or a computer programmer.

Matthew is survived by his father and stepmother, Rick and Kelli Terrill, of Oak Harbor, and his mother and stepfather, Maryanne Rassel and Marc Gilbert of Bothell, Wash.; his three brothers, Joshua Terrill and Jacob Hummel, both of Oak Harbor, and Kyle Gilbert of Bothell; grandparents, Dan and Ruth Terrill, Rodolfo and Gloria Fontecha and David Fosnaugh and Peg Boyd Fosnaugh, all of Oak Harbor; a stepgrandfather, Donn Gilbert, of San Francisco, Calif.; great-grandparents, Ruth Hays, of Bakerfield, Calif., Jim and Ruth Fosnaugh, of Klemme, Iowa, Harris and Marie Alford, of Pass Christian, Miss., and Beverly Boyd, of Belmond, Iowa; aunts and uncles, Wallace and Terri Forslof, of Arlington, Wash., Cristina and Matt Bennett, of Marysville, Wash., Rhonda and Bryan Audiss, of Anaheim Hills, Calif., and Jon and Trina Terrill, of Oak Harbor; also numerous cousins and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his two great-grandfathers, Lawrence Hays and Walter Boyd.

A private family graveside service was held on April 25, at Maple Leaf Cemetery, followed by a public memorial service at Oak Harbor Middle School Gymnasium with Pastsor Jerry Buss officiating.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity or to the Matthew Terrill Memorial Fund through any Whidbey Island Bank branch.

Arrangements were under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.

NEWTON — Paul G. Blanchard, 59, of 1400 E. 12th St. N., Newton, and formerly of Mason City, died Monday (May 5, 2003) at his home in Newton from complications of Progressive Supra Nuclear Palsey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1115 S. Eighth Ave. E. in Newton, with Father Phil Cardenzana, Pastoral Vicar, officiating.

Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today at the Wallace Family Funeral Home, 1115 E. 19th St. N. in Newton. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or to Hospice of Jasper County and may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home or at the church on the day of service.

Paul was born on June 20, 1943, in Mason City, a son of Clovis and Delvina M. (Sauve) Blanchard.

He was a 1962 graduate of Mason City High School.

Paul was united in marriage to Janette Ann Dickerson on Jan. 4, 1964, in Mason City.

They moved to Newton in 1966. He was a factory worker at Maytag Co. in dishwashers for 30 years, retiring in 1996.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Buckcreek Muzzleloaders, UAW Local 997 and past member of the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Janette, of Newton; one son, Paul A. Blanchard and his wief, Tamara, of Newton; two daughters, Ann Pietz and her husband, Larry, of Newton, and Sharon Mumm and her husband, Brian, of Bloomington, Wis.; four grandchildren; three brothers, Richard Blanchard and his wife, Donna, of Ackley, William Blanchard and his wife, Arlene, of Manly, and James “Jiggs” Blanchard and his wife, Kathy, of Clear Lake; one sister, June Blanchard, of Mason City; one sister-in-law, Carol Blanchard, of Monroe, Colo., and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles in 2003; a brother-in-law; two nephews; a sister-in-law, and a close friend, Larry Robson.

SIOUX CITY — Roberta Ann Collier, 63, of 441 W. Third St., Apartment 312, Sioux City, died Friday (May 2, 2003) at home.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Roberta was born on July 18, 1939, to Robert and Mary Lukes at Mason City, Iowa. She attended schools in Mason City until moving to Sioux City, where she spent most of her adult life.

Roberta had worked as a veterinarian’s assistant but had to retire early due to chronic health problems.

She is survived by her father, Robert L. Lukes, of Mason City; three half -brothers, Dennis and his wife, Lois, of Homestead, Ronald and his wife, Jan, of Mason City, and Gerald and his wife, Sue, of Mason City.

Roberta was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Ann Lukes; an infant brother, Rickie, and her grandparents.

KENNETH HOELSCHER

POPEJOY — Kenneth Hoelscher, 73, of Popejoy, Iowa, passed away Sunday (May 4, 2003) at his home. Funeral services for Kenneth Hoelscher will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Popejoy. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Popejoy.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Linn’s Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel, with the family present to receive friends between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m.

The Linn’s Funeral Homes, Iowa Falls Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Kenneth Frederick Hoelscher was born Jan. 30, 1930, at Eldora, Iowa, the son of Henry Gustav and Ethel Alva (Norton) Hoel-scher.

He attended the Mason City, Iowa, Community Schools.

He served with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951- 1952 with the 23rd Infantry, 2nd Division.

On March 14, 1954, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Lorraine Hillman at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Fairbank, Iowa.

Kenneth was the owner operator of Hoelscher Oil Co. in Popejoy from 1969 to 1978. He had also driven truck for Mickow Truck Lines, Melton Truck Lines, and had worked for Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach Calif., King’s Food in Ames and Ken’s Phillips 66 in Ames.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 50 years and belonged to Western Fraternal Life Association (W.F.L.A.) for more than 50 years.

ST. ANSGAR - C. Hugh Neeley, 85, of St. Ansgar, died on Monday (May 5, 2003) at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Hugh was born on Feb. 15, 1918, in rural Manly, to Royal and Elsie (Bowman) Neeley. Hugh's education was in rural schools in the Manly-Plymouth area.

He moved with his parents to a farm northeast of St. Ans-gar in 1933 and graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1936.

Following graduation Hugh farmed. For 12 years he operated a portable feed mill, grinding feed for the farmers.

In August of 1937 he married Viola Louise Lorenzen. To this union, four children were born.

They had a large dairy/grain farm in the St. Ansgar/Toeterville area until retiring in 1987.

Viola passed away on June 19, 1983.

Hugh married Virginia E. Larsen Adams on March 14, 1987. They made their home in St. Ansgar. They wintered in Texas from 1987 to 1999.

Hugh was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Viola; an infant brother; two brothers, Elwyn, in 1988 and Jean in 1989; one great-granddaughter; son-in-law Paul Spindler.

MELROSE - Richard Dean Hixson, 75, of Melrose, died Tuesday (May 6, 2003) at his home in Melrose.

Richard was born Dec. 21, 1927, in Mason City to Callie D. and Ila Z. (Pipper) Hixson.

He married Janice Tjaden on Sept. 22, 1973.

Richard was a veteran as he joined the U.S. Navy on Dec. 27, 1945 and was honorably discharged on Dec. 2, 1947.

He graduated from Mason City High School in 1948 and then enlisted in the U.S. Marines serving during the Korean Conflict until Aug. 15, 1972.

After his military service he joined the Army National Guard Reserve until May 12, 1985.

Richard began working for the federal government as a Federal Protective Officer in 1972 having retired in May of 1988.

He enjoyed coon hunting, fishing, and going to auctions.

He is survived by his wife, Janice, of Melrose; one daughter, Patricia Kent and her husband, Chuck, of Albia; four step-daughters, Marie Mahoney of Phoenix, Ariz., Karen Oelberg and husband, Dennis, of Clear Lake, Cindy Sloan and husband, Larry, of Nevada, and Betty Jo Burkhalter and husband, Gary, of Lauderdale, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; seven brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters-in-law.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, with Gary Burkhalter officating. Military rites will be conducted by the V.F.W. Post 733 of Mason City.

Bruce O. Smith Jr. was born Oct. 30, 1920, in Buffalo Center, the son of Bruce and Martha (Doege) Smith Sr. and was baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Thompson.

He is a member of Asbury Methodist Church in Lake Mills.

Bruce received his elementary education in rural schools in the Woden and Thompson areas and attended Thompson High School.

In 1942, he entered the United States Army where he trained as a medic and served in the European Theatre during World War II.

He was awarded the European Theatre Ribbon, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medals. He was a Staff Sergeant in the 95th Infantry (Victory) Division.

He was united in marriage to Lillian Steven on March 4, 1943, at the Methodist parson-age in Albert Lea, Minn. To this union three sons were born: Robert, Richard and David.

After Bruce's discharge from the Army, he farmed in the Leland, Joice and Kensett areas before buying a farm near Northwood.

After he retired from farming in 1988, he had a lawnmower and small engine repair shop until 2002.

Bruce worked for the ASCS office in Northwood and various other places while he was farming.

Besides his family, he enjoy-ed fishing, woodworking and jigsaw puzzles.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 60 years, Lillian, of Northwood; sons, Robert (Pam) Smith of Comanche, Richard (Renee) Smith of Chester, and David Smith of San Francisco, Calif.; brothers, Harold (Donnabelle) Smith of Scarville, Russell (Verle) Smith of Graettinger, and Donald (Janice) Smith of Lake Mills; sisters, Marjorie Dann of Albert Lea, Minn., and Darlene Langfald of Emmons, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Smith of Woodburn, Ore.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was a farmer all of his life.

He belonged to St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

He enjoyed going to coffee with his friends, enjoyed gardening and yard work, enjoyed old cars and also enjoyed visiting with people.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Shear, of Hampton; two daughters, Daphne Anderson and her husband, Dean, of Huxley, and Dorene Schear, of Long Beach, Calif.; two sons, Dallas Shear Jr., of Ventura, and Mike Shear and his wife, Patti, of Iowa City; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Arlene Barlow, of Aurora, Colo.

He spent his working life in professional sales, retiring from International Minerals, Mason City, in June of 1969, where he enjoyed many friend-ships in the farming com-munity.

Our father was a member of and proudly served in the U.S. Navy-Pacific during World War II where he was wounded while in a firefight.

His loving wife of 47 years, Margaret, and his youngest son, Daniel R. Cunningham, preceded him in death.

Three sons and their wives survive him, Albert R. and Linda Cunningham, Clarence and Betty Pringle and John S. and Brenda Pringle. Additionally, eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren survive him.

Our father’s life was long and loving, full of duty and devotion to his family and country. He provided strength and direction to each child according to their own needs. For 93-plus years, he was the good husband, father and friend. We will miss him so very much.

OSAGE — Clayton C. Schlick, 87, of Osage, died Friday (May 9, 2003) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

He worked in jewelry stores in Sioux City, Iowa; Fargo, N.D., and Mason City.

He was married to Violet Widmer at Moorhead, Minn., in 1942.

He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He opened his own jewelry store in Osage in 1946, which he operated for 36 years.

Clayton was an active mem-ber of the Osage American Legion Post 278, serving as post commander. He also serv-ed as district commander, and held many positions on the district, state and national levels.

He was a member of the Osage Zoning Commission, Rotary Club, Osage Chamber of Commerce, Osage Development Corp., Mitchell County Draft Board and the United Church of Christ.

Marjorie was born Aug. 17, 1915, in Howell, Mich., the daughter of Glen and Alma (Birdsall) Mack.

She attended country school near Deerfield, Mich., through the eighth grade and graduated from Howell High School in 1932.

She attended and graduated from the University of Michigan with a teaching degree.

Marjorie taught eight years in country schools and 43 years in the Melvindale and North Allen Park School District in Michigan.

She retired in 1980 and moved to Osage in 1984. She enjoyed gardening, the outdoors and spending time with her family.

DAVID GILMAN HELGELAND

NORTHWOOD — David Gilman Helgeland, 92, of Northwood, died Wednesday (May 7, 2003) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Lutheran Church, 309 N. Ninth St. in Northwood, with the Rev. Allan Stoa officiating. Following the services and according to his wishes, cremation will take place with graveside inurnment services at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, at the North Shell Rock Cemetery in rural Northwood.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S. in Northwood, and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

The family of David Gilman Helgeland has requested that memorial contributions be made to the First Lutheran Church in Northwood in his memory.

David Gilman Helgeland was born on July 16, 1910, in rural Heartland Township, rural Northwood, the son of Sever S. and Andrena (Tenold) Helgeland.

He was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation on May 18, 1924, at the Shell Rock Lutheran Church in Northwood.

He attended and received his education in the Northwood school system, graduating from Northwood High School in 1928.

After completing his schooling, he helped his parents on the family farm in rural Northwood.

In 1934, he joined the U.S. Postal service and was employ-ed with the Postal Service until his retirement in 1974.

He was united in marriage to Mildred Nelson on May 24, 1937, at the Lutheran parsonage in Northwood. She preceded him in death on Dec. 5, 1980.

He was united in marriage to Kristine Ellingson Noble on May 24, 1986, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mound, Minn. She preceded him in death on Dec. 8, 1996.

David enjoyed woodturning, woodcarvings, restoring antique furnishings and square dancing.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood and the Elks Lodge in Albert Lea.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, the Rev. Mark Helgeland and his wife, Pauline, of Byron, Minn., and daughter, Judi Helgeland of Byron; one grandson, Andrew Helgeland of Byron; a step-daughter, Barbara Stevens, of Combine, Texas; three step-grandchildren, Lisa, Lori and Christine; six step-great-grandchildren, Rachel, Sadie, Abigail, Trevor, Cayle and Joshua; one brother, Kermit Helgeland and his wife, Wilma, of Sun City, Ariz., as well as many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

His parents; two wives, Mildred and Kristine, and three sisters, Elma Monson, Stella Moen and Luella Hubbard, preceded him in death.
