 JOHN ‘JACK’ PHILIP FURLEIGH

CLEAR LAKE — John Philip “Jack” Furleigh, 68, Clear Lake, died Friday (Dec. 19, 2003) at the USA Health Care Center in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clear Lake with Monsignor Robert Hogan officiating. Military honors will be by members of the United States Marine Corps and by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Clear Lake. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake.

The family of Jack Furleigh has requested that memorial contributions be made to the American Legion Boys State, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church or Opportunity Village in Clear Lake in his memory.

Jack Furleigh was born on Dec. 24, 1934, in Clear Lake, the son of Philip and Anna (Heidenreich) Furleigh. He attended and received his education in the Clear Lake School system, graduating from Clear Lake High School. He was inducted into the U.S. Marine Corps on July 1, 1953, in Des Moines and was honorably discharged on June 30, 1956, in Miami, Fla. After his honorable discharge, Jack came back to the North Iowa area and attended and graduated from NIACC in Mason City, and also graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor of arts degree. After completing his schooling, he worked for State Farm Insurance in Mason City, and also worked for Allied Group In-surance in Des Moines until his retirement.

He was united in marriage to Jean Diesburg on Jan. 7, 1968, in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Jack was very active in doing volunteer work for Opportunity Village in Clear Lake, and the American Legion Boys State. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clear Lake, past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Clear Lake and was very active in the Republican Party in Iowa.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Philip Ed-ward Furleigh and his wife, Margaret, of Minneapolis, Minn., James Anthony “Tony” Furleigh and his wife, Laura, of Mason City, Janelle Marie Holland and son-in-law, Anthony Holland of Woden, Iowa, and Curt Thompson and his wife, Dona, of Forest City; five grandchildren, Steven Thompson, Josh Holland, Patrick Furleigh, Katherine and Gabrielle Furleigh; brothers and sister, Phyllis Pederson of Lake Mills, Roberta Goodman and her husband, Richard, of Ur-bandale, Richard Furleigh and his wife, Dorothy, of Oelwein, James Furleigh and his wife, Mary, of Fallbrook, Calif., and Frank Furleigh of Texas City, Texas, as well as other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jean Furleigh, and two brothers, Patrick and Tom Furleigh.

DALE D. BYRE


MASON CITY — Dale D. Byre, 62, of Mason City, died Thursday (Dec. 18, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services for Dale will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain, S.D., with the Rev. Daryl Tompkins officiating. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Chamberlain. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and from noon until service time Tuesday at the church in South Dakota.

Memorials may be directed toward the family.

Dale was born on March 2, 1941, in Iron Nation, S.D., to John and Emily Byre. He was confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain, S.D. He attended Reliance High School and was an en-thusiastic basketball and track participant.

After graduating from Re-liance High School in 1960, he attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S.D., and the Western College of Auctioneering in Billings, Mont. He is a charter member of the South Dakota Auctioneer’s Association which started in 1962. He then operated Byre Auction in Ken-nebec while ranching. He en-joyed riding in the bull riding and saddle bronc rodeos.

He was then united in marriage to Gail Bingen in 1962 and worked as general production manager and an-nouncer of KPLO-TV in Rel-iance for three years before acquiring his Federal Communications Commission 1st Class engineer license at the Radio Electronic Institute in Sarasota, Fla. He returned to KPLO-TV as an electronics engineer until 1969, when he returned to ranching and auctioneering.

Dale and Gail ranched until 1972 and then started several businesses in the area while living in Gregory, Vermillion and Yankton, S.D. In 1982, he returned to college at the National School of Business in Rapid City, S.D. From there he accepted a position as transmitter engineer at KDUH-TV in Scottsbluff, Neb. In 1985, he moved his family to Mason City and ac-cepted a position as chief en-gineer of KIMT-TV. He still enjoyed auctioneering at times.

Dale was an accomplished “storyteller/writer” and had several published articles. He also sculpted wildlife figurines, and enjoyed woodworking and restoring his favorite collector cars. Dale was also an avid gun collector and hunter. His most recent venture was “Collector Cars in the Heartland” video productions, which have aired in several markets.

His pride and joy were his four sons and the birth of his grandson, Dillon, age 3.

He is survived by his wife, Gail Byre, of Mason City; his son, Dale Byre Jr. and wife, Ra’Londa, of Lincoln, Neb.; his son, Brett Byre and wife, Julie, of Green Bay, Wis.; his son, Bryan Byre and wife, Stacy, of Des Moines; and his son, Jesse Byre and Kelly Janssen of Mason City; his grandson, Dillon Byre of Lincoln, Neb.; brothers, Ed Byre of Reliance, S.D., Elton Byre and wife, Jody, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; sisters, JoAnn Porterfield and husband, Art, of Trapper Creek, Alaska, Jean Anderson and husband, Lee, of Reliance, S.D., and many nieces and nephews.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, John and Emily Byre; an infant daughter, Laurel Ann, and a nephew, Wade Byre.

RICHARD GAYLORD ‘RICH’ ANDERSON


CLEAR LAKE — Richard Gaylord “Rich” Anderson, 71, of 200 N. Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died Friday (Dec. 19, 2003) at the Muse Norris Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. 4th St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment will take place at 11 a.m. at the Clear Lake Cemetery with military honors by the Clear Lake VFW.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be left to Hospice of North Iowa, KCMR, Zion Lutheran Church, ISU Companion Animal Fund, Clear Lake Public Library or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Richard was born the son of Olaf A. and Alice Izetta (Fletcher) Anderson, Feb. 7, 1932, at rural Eagle Grove, Iowa. Richard graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1949. He enlisted in the United States Army in November 1952, and was discharged in September of 1954.

After his military service, he was employed for 20 years in the men’s retail clothing business at Leuthold Co. in Eagle Grove and Platteville, Wis. He later worked for St. Clair-Starks in Mason City, Iowa. Richard married Karen Griffith on Sept. 9, 1959, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove. In 1987, Richard began driving van for Northern Trails AEA, retiring in 1997.

In 1944, Richard was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Holmes Lutheran Church. Richard was an avid golfer, enjoyed playing baseball and softball for the Eagle Grove City League, watching Fox News channel, tennis and WWE wrestling. He was a member of Heritage Foundation, Zion Lutheran Church and a charter member of Rush Limbaugh’s “The Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy.”

Richard is survived by his wife, Karen Anderson, of Clear Lake; daughter, Laura Toohey and her husband, Vern, of Britt; son, Mitch Anderson of East Wallingford, Vt.; two grandchildren, Ashley Phinney of Clear Lake and Meagan Anderson of Forest City, Iowa; a sister, Ruby Jayne Smith, and her husband, Dale M., of Eagle Grove; mother-in-law, Mildred Griffith, Clarion Care Center, Clarion; several nieces and nephews, and his special Yorkie companion, Oliver Richard Anderson.

His parents and his father-in-law, Cecil Griffith, April 12, 1968, preceded Richard in death.

MABEL KATHERINE MITCHELL


LAKOTA — Mabel Kath-erine Mitchell, 96, formerly of Lakota, died Friday (Dec. 19, 2003) at Franklin County Memorial Hospital, Hampton.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft, with Pastor Donna Steven of the Lakota First Presbyterian Church officiating. Inurnment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Lakota.

Her family will greet friends prior to the service at the funeral home on Monday.

Mabel Katherine Mitchell was born April 4, 1907, in Ledyard, daughter of Tony Ray and Mary (Pfander) Estle. She grew up in Grant Township and graduated from Lakota High School in 1925.

Mabel married Henry Franklin Mitchell on July 27, 1928, in Algona, Iowa. She was the librarian in Lakota for 12 years and also did upholstery work. She enjoyed craftwork and sewing, especially her own wardrobe. She also enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles. Mabel as-sisted in starting the hot lunch program at the Lakota School.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lakota and in later years was a member of the First Pres-byterian Church. She lived with her daughter, Lennice, in Phoenix, Ariz., for 13 years before returning to Iowa. She then lived with her daughter, Avis, in Coulter for a short time and has been a resident of the Hampton Care Center since 1998.

She is survived by two daughters, Avis Irene Johnson, Coulter, and Lennice LaVon Goyette, Phoenix, Ariz., and one son, Wallace Roger Mitchell; 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Edna Winter, Buffalo Center, Jeanne McCoy and her husband, Leon, Spirit Lake, Velda Logemann and her husband, Harlan, Fairmont, Minn., and Doris Kleindel, Elmore, Minn., and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry, on May 11, 1975; a grandson, Dan Johnson; four brothers, Dale, Lee, John and Leroy “Nick” Estle, and three sisters, Pearl Smith, Ruth Hartshorn and Norma Osinga.

CLEAR LAKE — Bonnie Mae Miller, 67, of 813 6th Place N., Clear Lake, died Thursday (Dec. 18, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, 508 2nd Ave. N., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.

Memorials may be given to the Bonnie Miller Memorial Fund.

Bonnie was born Aug. 24, 1936, in Clear Lake, the daughter of Lloyd and Ina (Edwards) Miller. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1955 and attended LaJames College. Bonnie operated a beauty parlor in Bode from 1959-1962 and Bonnie’s Beauty Shop in Lake Mills from 1962-1991.

Bonnie enjoyed genealogy of her family. She loved her family and especially her nieces and nephew. She was a caregiver for her aunts and several other people. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake.

Bonnie is survived by two brothers, LaVern Miller and his wife, Pearl, of Clear Lake, and Dwayne Miller and his wife, Ardith,of Charles City; a sister, Dorothy Heimendinger and her husband, Orville, Osage; 11 nieces and a nep-hew; numerous great-nieces and nephews, and special aunt, Irene Miller, Clear Lake, and nephew, Kenneth Heimendinger, Orchard, Iowa.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Orville Miller.

OSAGE — Keith Marshall, 80, died Friday (Dec. 19, 2003) at Mercy Capital Hospital in Des Moines.

ARTHUR E. BOEHNKE


GARNER — Arthur E. Boehnke, 94, of Garner, died Sunday (Dec. 21, 2003) at the Concord Care Center, Garner.

His funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church northeast of Garner with the Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St., Garner and one hour prior to services at the church.

Arthur Emil Boehnke, the son of Carl August and Mathilda (Dorow) Boehnke, was born on Nov. 2, 1909, on a farm northeast of Garner. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church rural Garner. He attended St. John’s Parochial School and Garner High School.

On Nov. 17, 1935, he married Lillian Margaret Hollatz at St. John’s Lutheran Church. On Nov. 17, 1989, they celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary prior to Lillian’s untimely death on Jan. 2, 1990. They farmed northeast of Garner until 1974, when they retired and moved into Garner.

Arthur was an active lifetime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and was deacon for six years, Lutheran Laymen’s League president for six years, treasurer for three years, AAL member and president for 10 years, was an active member of the church Board of Education and was a committed Sunday school teacher for more than 15 years.

Arthur was devoted to his family and farming and remained active in the community through the Garner Lions Club.

He is survived by his children, Robert A. Boehnke and wife, Karen, of Clear Lake, Philip C. Boehnke and wife, Sharon, of Garner, Mark A. Boehnke and wife, Roseann, of Garner, Dale W. Boehnke and wife, Annette, of Lewisville, Texas, and Ruth E. Chiko and husband, Carl, of Surrey, B.C., Canada; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Alice Boehnke, of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Laura Boehnke of Ventura; a brother-in-law, LeRoy Hollatz of Garner; many nieces and nephews; and other caring relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian; his parents; brothers, Albert, Charles, William, Herman and the Rev. Arnold Boehnke; and a sister, Tillie Hinrichs.

LIME SPRINGS— D. Clifford Norman, 84, of Lime Springs, died Saturday (Dec. 20, 2003) of congestive heart failure at the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Maple Leaf, rural Elma, with burial in the Saratoga Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Conway Funeral Home in Riceville from 4 until 8 p.m. today and one hour prior to the service at the church.

He was born on Oct. 3, 1919, at Geneva, to Albert and Caroline (Heins) Norman. On Nov. 24, 1946, he was united in marriage to Paula Geffert at Toeterville. He was a farmer and ran Norman Construction for many years. He served in the Army during World War II.

He is survived by his children, Ronald (Susan) Norman of Lime Springs, Gerald (Barbara) of Springville, and Cindy (Richard) Huso of Dodge Center, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five sisters, Lucille Duenow of Rochester, Minn., Alberta Friedrich of Elma, Marlys Falck of Chester, Joan Menken of Greene and Janice Stevenson of Melbourne, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Paula, in 1997; and two sisters, Marcella Ficken and Phyllis Robinson.

GREENE— Funeral services for Harm Schipper, 72, of 413 N. 2nd St., Greene, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with the Rev. Paul Uzel officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Military rites will be conducted by Tack-Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Harm Schipper was born Nov. 20,1931, at Aplington, Iowa, a son of George G. and Anna (Miller) Schipper and died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Harm attended country school through the eighth grade after which he had to go to work. He entered the U.S. Army in September of 1952. He served overseas in Korea. Harm received several medals including the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharge in September of 1955. He worked for John Deere in Waterloo for two years, after which he farmed for his mother until he married Janet Maxwell in Feb. 20, 1960. Harm and Janet farmed for 30 years until ill health forced him to retire. He was always helping out other people whenever he was asked.

Harm is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Janet of Greene; his daughter, Vickie Hildebrand and her friend, Jeff Winters, of Greene; two grandsons, Zachary and Tanner, both of Greene; three brothers, Ben Schipper of Ackley, John (Marie) Schipper of Greene, Andrew (Sharon) of New Hartford; three sisters, Annie Prange of Parkersburg, Jesse (Louie) Peters of Aplington, Esther (Harm) Krull of Parkersburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George, and one in infancy; and two sister, Violet Kepple, and Pearl Schipper.

SUSANN R. ALLEN


NAUVOO, Ill. — Susann R. (Eau Claire) Allen, 59, of Nauvoo, Ill., died at 8:19 a.m. Sunday (Dec. 21, 2003) in her home in Nauvoo.

She was born Aug. 1, 1944, in Des Moines, a daughter of Walter G. and Ruth (Manning) Eau Claire.

On Sept. 11, 1963 in Salt Lake City, Utah, she was married to Charles W. Allen. He survives.

Susan was a homemaker and along with her husband, owned and managed The Allyn House and Blimpie in Nauvoo.

She graduated from Mason City High School.

She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Nauvoo.

She served in various capacities in the Primary, Young Women’s Association, and the Relief Society. She was very active in the Nauvoo Chamber of Commerce.

She was a devoted mother, wife, grandmother and daughter.

She is survived by her husband, Charles W. Mary I. Drake was born Feb. 9, 1940, in Lawrence, Kan., the daughter of Thomas R. and Anna M. (Eizenhamer) Patterson.

Mary attended and graduated from school in Lawrence, Kan.

She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Mary was dedicated and devoted to her faith, she was a member Wesley Methodist Church in Charles City.

Mary was employed as a Home Health Aide with Floyd County Home Health for many years, until retiring for health reasons in 2002.

Mary had taught Head Start for 20 years in Floyd County. Mary had also been employed part-time at the Buy Low Self Serve in Charles City.

Some of Mary’s interests and leisure activities included flower and vegetable gardening and working with a variety of crafts.

She will be best remembered for being a kind and nurturing mother, grandmother and sister.

The family recalls that Mary was a very outgoing person and her greatest joy in life was assisting and serving the public.

MEYER — Mary M. “Mim” Hemann, 69, formerly of Meyer, died Friday (Dec. 19, 2003) at the Riceville Community Rest Home in Riceville, from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease.

She had resided at the rest home since October of 1991. She also had spent a short time at the Patty Elwood Alzheimer’s Center in Cresco, Iowa, during that time.

Mass of Christian Burial was held 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer, with burial in the church cemetery.

Mary was born on Oct. 5, 1934, in New Haven, to Leon and Catherine (Elgas) Dostart. She graduated from the St. Peter’s Catholic School in New Haven.

After graduation she worked as a telephone operator for the New Hampton Telephone Company.

On June 1, 1954, she married Arnold Hemann at the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven. After marriage, they farmed the Hemann family farm in rural Meyer.

Mary was a cake decorator for many years.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer, Iowa, where she was active in starting the religious education program and was also a member of the church choir.

IRIS ‘CHIC’ EILEEN HEWETT


PHOENIX, Ariz. — Iris “Chic” Eileen Hewtt, 79, passed away Dec. 20, 2003, in Phoenix, Ariz.

Chic was born to John “Guy” Cahill and Ruby Putzier Cahill in Winner, S.D.

She and her husband, Bill, were longtime residents of Mason City, moving permanently to Scottsdale, Ariz. in 1993.

Chic was a homemaker and avid golfer belonging to both the Mason City Country Club and McCormick Ranch Golf and Country Club in Arizona.

Survivors include her two sons, Guy Hewett and his wife, Shauna, of Mason City, and W. Brent Hewett and his wife, Carolyn, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; sisters, Echo Dillon and Guyla Tritle, both of Winner, S.D.; four grandchildren, Shannon and Trevor Hewett, also Brandee Schumway Hewett and Troy Hewett; two great-grandchildren, Nicolle Hewett and Avery VonEiff.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; and her parents.

Burial of cremains will be held in Mason City, Iowa, at a later date.

THORNTON — Leann Mullaney Jurgens, 48, of Thornton, died Monday (Dec, 22, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Meservey Reformed Church with the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Interment will be in Meservey Cemetery.

Leann Marie Jurgens was born May 1, 1955, in Mason City, a daughter of Donald E. Mullaney and Joan Gribben Mullany. She graduated from Newman High School in 1973 and graduated from La’James College of Cosmetology in Mason City where she also was an instructor until 1978.

In 1975 Leann married Mark Bosma. To this union one daughter, Alana was born. In 1978, Leann moved to Des Moines where she then managed La’James College in Des Moines.

On March 1, 1986 Leann was united in marriage with Dean E. Jurgens at the Meservey Reformed Church. They made their home in Meservey until 1997.

Leann had her own salon in Thornton, “Leann’s Studio,” from 1987 until 2001 when she retired due to her health. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2000.

Leann was a member of the Meservey Reformed Church and served as youth group sponsor for three years. She was dedicated to her business and her clients.

She loved to decorate her home for the holidays as well as gardening and enjoyed birds and her flowers.

Outings with her friends and neighbors gave her joy but she really loved her family and made everyone she touched feel special.

Irene was born on Nov. 17, 1913, one of six children to William and Ella Jeffrey in Rural Rockford.

She was united in marriage to Donald C. Riel. In 1945 they moved to their farm in rural Rockford in Cerro Gordo County. There they raised their two children.

She enjoyed gardening with vegetables and flowers and helping with the farm work. She remained there until two and one half years ago when she underwent hip surgery, followed by several small stokes that left her with dementia.

She was unable to live alone and be self-sustaining so she moved to the Rockwell Nursing Home to be close to her friends and family.

In their early years she and Donald enjoyed camping and fishing in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Grandmother’s Club and always enjoyed coffee with the relatives and friends. She celebrated her 90th birthday in November.

Those who shared in Irene’s life include her daughter, Charlene and her husband, Gordon Jorgensen; and her son, Ronald and his wife, Kay Riel, all of Urbandale; her five grandchildren, Gary, Terry, and Jeff Jorgensen, Lori Gordon and Douglas Riel; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald, in 1995; one sister, Dorothy Grover; and four brothers, Kenneth, Gerald, Roger, and Dale.

MASON CITY — Leo J. Ebeling, 86, formerly of 318 8th St. S.E., died Monday morning (Dec. 22, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Michael Podhajsky officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with full military honors by the Mason City Memorial Association of the VFW and American Legion.

Leo was born on Sept. 18, 1917, in Mason City, the son of Peter and Philomena “Piwowar” Ebeling, and was one of four children. He graduated from St. Joseph Catholic Church School.

He was employed at was employed at Jacob E. Decker and Sons meat packing plant as the Billing Department Manager until World War II.

He entered the Army on Feb. 15, 1943, and served until his honorable discharge on Nov. 9, 1945. He served his country in Europe as a T3 with the HQ 556 QM Service Group.

Following his discharge he again worked for Deckers until its closing with combined years of service of over 35 years.

He then joined Curries Manufacturing Company in the shipping department for an additional 10 years.

On Nov. 11, 1941, he was united in marriage to Lucille Watson at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Buffalo Center. To this union was born three children, nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren with one on the way.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he was an active member in his younger years, and the American Legion.

He along with his family enjoyed their cabin at Clear Lake, fishing, hunting and re-telling the story of hunting pheasants the day after he was married. He also enjoyed raising tomatoes in his garden.

Those thankful in sharing Leo’s life include his three children, Mary Jane and her husband, David Johnson, of Victoria, Minn., John and his wife, Jeannette, of Clear Lake, and Richard “Dick” and his wife, Julie, of Mason City; nine grandchildren, Paul Johnson, Deborah Lowe, Colleen Moore, Mike and Lori Ebeling, Tami Ferch, Ben and Sara Ebeling, and Jake Langhoff; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Sarah Christiana McGrath was born Jan. 5, 1918, in Independence, Mo., a daughter of Bert and Fern McGrath. At a young age she went to live with her grandmother.

On Aug. 19, 1939, Sally was united in marriage with Melvin Carl Kreitlow. They made their home in Dows and then in Meservey. To this marriage two children were born and they adopted one son.

In 1979, Sally moved to Mason City and worked as a foster grandparent for over 10 years. She then worked for an agency that helped to employ the elderly until 2000.

She has spent the last 2½ years as a resident of the I.O.OF. Home in Mason City.

Sally had been a member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey.

She was an avid gardener and loved to sew and work with children, especially as a foster grandparent.

Sally’s immediate family include her daughter: Melvene Voeltz, of Mason City; son: Mickey Kreitlow, of Meservey; daughter-in-law: Mary Kreitlow, of Ansonia, Conn.; six grandchildren: Deidra Voeltz, Stormey Kreitlow, Saramae Kreitlow, Sean Kreitlow, William Kreitlow and Tanya Kreitlow; one great-grandson: Markese Kreitlow; former husband: Melvin Kreitlow, of Meservey; one brother: Bill McGrath, of California; and a large extended family.

MANLY — John George Marker Jr., 82, of Manly, died Monday (Dec. 22, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly, with the Rev. Robert Cumings officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Plymouth, with military honors by the Edward Tosel American Legion Post #110 of Manly.

John George Marker Jr. was born on June 9, 1921, in Mason City, the son of John George Marker Sr. and Anna Elizabeth (Geist) Marker.

John was baptized and confirmed in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason City.

He attended many different elementary schools in Mason City and the surrounding area. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1941.

He was inducted into military service on Sept. 16, 1942, and became a member of the U.S. Air Force where he took electrical and mechanical training. He served overseas for two years in the European and Asiatic theatres.

He was united in marriage to Lorraine Marie Marken on May 11, 1947, at the Bethel Evangelical Church in Manly.

John drove for Ruan Transport Company for 24 years, receiving a 1,000,000-mile safety-driving award. He retired in 1978. He also farmed the farm they lived on south of Manly for 28 years. They moved to Manly in April of 1983. After his retirement he worked for the Northwood Shopper.

After his wedding John became a member of the Bethel Evangelical Church in Manly, where he served as a trustee, a lay member to conference, and served on other committees of the church.

He was a member of the Christian Home Builders Group from its inception, attended Disciple and other Bible study groups, and the adult Sunday school class.

John was a member of the Flying Tigers, China Burma India group (CBI), in which he served as the Iowa chaplain, a member of the Edward Tosel American Legion Post #110 in Manly in which he was past commander and chaplain, “Our Buddies” VFW Memorial Post #6779 of Northwood, and a DAV member and at one time a member of the 14th Air Force Group.

He also belonged to RSVP, Manly Camera Club, and Manly Senior Citizens where he served on the board and was one of the drivers for the Manly taxi.

John enjoyed spending time with his family, of whom he was very proud, doing work on his vehicles, traveling, and he enjoyed the beauty of this great country.

MASON CITY — William H. Smythe, 81, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Tuesday (Dec. 23, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

A memorial prayer service will be held 5 p.m. Friday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Samuel Hamilton-Poore, First Congregational United Church of Christ, officiating.

Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Private family inurnment services will be held at a later date in Beloit, Wis.

MASON CITY — LaDonna Jean Viet, 69, of Hampton, died Tuesday (Dec. 23, 2003) at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, with the Rev. Richard Parker and the Rev. Art Zewert officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

LaDonna was born on Aug. 30, 1934, in Franklin County, to Raymond and Vera Wells Froning.

She attended Hampton High School and received her GED from NIACC.

She was united in marriage to Galen Viet on June 1, 1952, in Hampton.

She retired from Franklin General Hospital as a supervisor.

She was a member of the Neighborhood Bible Church in Hampton.

She enjoyed going to rummage sales, fishing, working, decorating, being with her grandkids and her dog Mitzi. She also enjoyed spending the summer in Clear Lake.

She is survived by her husband, Galen Viet, of Hampton; a son, Dennis R. and wife, Linda Viet, of Hampton; a son, Randy L. and wife, Holly Viet, of Hampton; a daughter, Kristie K. and husband, Jeff Meints, of Sheffield; a daughter, Debra J. and husband, Tony Plagge, of Hampton; sister, Margaret Huisman, of North Highlands, Calif.; sister, Shirley and husband, Verlon Siems, of Hampton; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by parents, two brothers and one sister.

MARK MALAND


MASON CITY — Mark Maland, 53, of Mason City, died Thursday (Dec. 18, 2003) at his home of natural causes.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. for one hour prior to services.

Memorials may be directed to the North Iowa Transition Center or to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Mark Maland was born July 14, 1950, at Sioux City, Iowa, and adopted as a baby by Lesmore and Alberta Maland of rural Kanawha. Mark grew up on his parents’ farm, graduated from Kanawha High School, Waldorf College, and attended Luther College.

He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church, rural Kanawha, and later a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City.

Mark had a love for music and sang in the choirs of both churches.

In 1987, following his father’s heart attack, Mark was accepted as a patient at the North Iowa Transition Center where he had lived the past 16 years.

Mark is survived by an aunt and uncle; and several cousins.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents.
