ALICE HELEN RUNYAN PERKINS

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the Williamsburg Room of Thompson’s Harveson & Cole Funeral Home, 702 Eighth Ave. in Fort Worth, Texas.

Helen Perkins was born April 10, 1906, in Mason City, Iowa, to Cyrena Alice and A.L. Runyan.

A long-time love of gardening is attributed to being raised on the Runyon family farm in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, with sisters, Grace, Pearl and brother, Bob.

She later attended the University of Illinois and taught school in Mason City and Manly, Iowa, before raising a family of her own.

A devoted mother of three, Helen taught children’s Sunday school for many years, was a Cub Scout den mother, and took particular pride in organizing and leading a Mason City Girl Scout Troop that garnered national recognition for being the first recipients of Curved Bar Awards, comparable to the Boy Scouts’ Eagle Award.

A pioneer business woman, she founded Helen Perkins Real Estate in 1949, later adding an insurance brokerage and was involved in the development of Ridglea North, River Oaks, Richland Hills, Westcliff, and the South Hills residential areas.

She served on the local, state, and national Board of Realtors, presided over the Fort Worth Council of Women Realtors, appointed the Mayor’s Committee on the status of women, chaired the women’s division of The Chamber of Commerce, and was involved with Toastmistress as well as serving a six-year term on the Fort Worth Zoning Board.

Her love of mentoring included teaching real estate in the FWISD, and considered her sales associates as an extention of her family.

A life-long interest in the arts included serving as president of the Fort Worth Ballet Guild, serving on the board of Women of the West (Scott Theater), Casa Amigas, T.C.U. Fine Arts, Rejebian Book Review, and the Fort Worth Opera Guild.

She was a former member of the Fort Worth Women’s Club, and was named in Texas Monthly as one of the most influential women of Fort Worth.

While others might consider slowing down as they become senior citizens, “Grandma Helen” took full advantage of her golden years, pursuing a love of travel that spanned the globe and mastering ballroom dancing, entering dance competitions across the country, she won countless trophies and awards, including a national waltz championship, and a dance picture on the front page of The New York Times.

She treasured her involvement with the Tanglefoot and Metro Dance Clubs. Passionate about music, rhythm and dance, she was sharing her joy with her great grandchildren at the Fort Worth Greek Festival just the week before her death.

She always had season tickets to the Fort Worth Symphony, Opera, and Ballet.

A love of life sent this grandmother off on elephant rides in Asia and Africa, but it was her great love of family and friends that brought her her greatest joy.

The family would like to express their gratitude for the loving caregiving of Walterlene “Sissy” Crayton and Judy Ward.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude A. Perkins; son, Gary A. Perkins; and grandson, Gary A. Perkins Jr.
