Marlene Ruth (Smith) Pruin was born to Frank and Ruth (Broers) Smith in Rockwell on Dec. 30, 1935. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1954.

She met and married her faithful, loving and caring husband, Paul Pruin, on June 27, 1954, at the Rockwell United Methodist Church, where she was baptized, confirmed and has remained a lifelong member.

Over the years Marlene and Paul raised Belgian horses and both of them were inducted into the Draft Horse Hall of Fame in August of this year.

As her children grew, Marlene kept active with them by being a 4-H leader. She also was a member of the TTT club. Her greatest attribute was her family and greatest joys were her 10 grandchildren.

Marlene and Paul would work hard all week and then look forward to their evening out at area restaurants on Friday nights.

Her smile was contagious, her strength and courage were undying and admirable, which made her an all together remarkable lady.

Marlene loved her plants and while she could she kept the home place beautiful with the flowers she planted. Marlene was also an avid country and western music fan.

Her death leaves her husband of 49 years, Paul, and three children: Doug and his wife, Tamara Pruin, of Mason City, Barb and her husband, Bill Moorehead, of Mason City, and Leigh Ann and her husband, John Sheahan, of Roland; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer Pruin and her fiance, Peter Bixel; Krista and her husband, Eric Hemann, Matt and his wife, Maggie Pruin, Mark and his wife, Missy Pruin, Kendra Pruin, Dustin and his wife, Traci Moorehead, and Josh Moorehead, and Jordan, Jacob, and Ali Jo Sheahan; one sister, Marilyn Schwanke, of Albuquerque, N.M.; her mother, Ruth Smith; and her mother-in-law, Ruth Pruin, both of Mason City; and several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

LILLIAN JACOBS

CHARLES CITY - Lillian Jacobs, 90, a former resident of 809 Allison St., Charles City, died Thursday (Dec. 11, 2003) at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Lillian Jacobs will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. Bishop Christopher Billings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Mason City will officiate. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Nashua.

Lillian Beatrice Peterson Jacobs was born June 15, 1913, on the family farm near Nashua, the daughter of Bartlett and Sarah (Hicks) Peterson. She received her education from a country school near Nashua.

On Nov. 10, 1962, she married John Jacobs at Fort Bragg, Calif. Except for seven years in California, Lillian spent all of her life in this area.

Lillian led a life of service to her friends and family. Although for many of her past years she had serious health problems, she never complained and it never kept her from serving others, although it must have been very difficult at times.

Because of her wonderful acts of charity, her family and friends are comforted to know that she is with her Father in Heaven. She was a Christian in every respect.

Many stories have already been recounted about her numerous acts of kindness. She would walk to the grocery store despite her own personal health problems to buy groceries from her limited income for neighbors and the needy. She would walk to the nursing home and read Bible stories to the residents. She cared for her mother for many years when she, herself, probably needed help at times.

She loved her beautiful garden and would share her flowers with everyone to brighten their days. For years she sent birthday cards of cheer to members of her church, even though she could not always attend church due to her health. Her acts of kindness will be missed by many.

Her hobbies included gardening, puzzles, coloring, charitable service and spending time with her friends and family.

She often shared with her friends, with tears in her eyes, how she missed attending church and how special it was to have friends from church visit her and bring her a little bit of heaven here on earth. She really looked forward to having Christmas Eve dinner with friends from church.

Living family members include a sister, Marguerite Curtis, of Charles City; three stepsons, of California; five nieces, Joy Osteen, of Schertz, Texas, Terri (Paul) Kidd, of LaJolla, Calif., Barbara (Charles) Greaser, of Hare-lysville, Pa., Sheila (Lewis) Wright, of North Liberty, and Mary Jo (Tom) Donohoe, of Davenport; two nephews, Gary (Alfie) Blanchard, of Boston, Mass., and Roger (Marcia) Blanchard, of Lee's Summit, Mo.; two great-nephews, Jeffrey (Laurie) Lackore, of Joplin, Mo., and Robert Kidd, of LaJolla, Calif., and many other greatnieces, nephews and cousins.
