HAROLD R. GRUNHOVD
THOMPSON — Harold R. Grunhovd, 79, of
Thompson died Sunday (Aug. 24, 2003) at
Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo
Center.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30
p.m. Wednesday at Bethany Lutheran
Church in Thompson with Pastor Mark
Decker officiating. Burial will be at
Bethel Lutheran Cemetery in Vinje.
Military rites will be conducted by the
Thompson V.F.W. Color Guard and Kiester
American Legion Rifle Squad.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m.
today at Winter Funeral Home at 245
Harrison St. in Thompson and one hour
before services at the church.
Harold Reuben Grunhovd was born March
29, 1924, on a farm near Joice, Iowa. He
was the son of Helmer and Alpha
(Peterson) Grunhovd.
When Harold was four years old his
father died and after raising her sons,
his mother married Harvey Anderson.
Harold spent his youth in Scarville,
Iowa, was baptized and confirmed at
Scarville Immanuel Lutheran Church by
Rev. S. J. Fretheim, and graduated from
Scarville High School in 1941.
Harold married Leonora (Tudy) Sunde on
May 17, 1943. He entered the Army in May
1943 and was discharged in January 1946.
He was in the European Theatre and
served in the 789th division as an
anti-aircraft gunner. When he returned
from the war, he enrolled in Luther
College and graduated on Aug. 18, 1951.
Harold began his 14 year teaching career
in Scarville and then taught in Seneca,
Ledyard, and Sheffield where he was a
math teacher and girls basketball coach.
His second career was with Farm Bureau
Insurance as a Crop Hail Supervisor for
25 years. During this time, Harold and
Tudy lived in Clear Lake and Mankato,
Minn.
In 1976, they moved back to Scarville
where he was mayor for 12 years.
His chicken gizzard dish was enjoyed in
Scarville and the Legion Hall in
Kiester.
After Harold retired in 1989, he and
Tudy moved to Albert Lea, Minn. and
spent several winters in Surprise, Ariz.
In April they moved to Thompson, where
Harold was cared for by his family. In
August, Harold became a resident of
Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo
Center where he passed away on Sunday,
Aug. 24, 2003.
Harold is survived by his wife, Leonora,
of Thompson; two daughters, Diane (Jim)
Kozita of Thompson, and Linda (Steve)
Peik of Oelwein; five grandsons, Warren
(Laurel) Kozita of River Falls, Wis.;
Chad (Amy) Kozita of Faribault, Minn.;
Matthew Peik and special friend Kim of
Davenport, Samuel Peik of Iowa City, and
Jared Kozita of Thompson; three
great-grandchildren, Jackson, Emma, and
Phoebe Kozita; and step-sister Annabelle
(Harold) Knutson of Lake Mills.
Harold was preceded in death by his
parents, Helmer and Alpha; step-father
Harvey Anderson; infant brother Robert
Carlyle, brother Adolph (Duffy)
Grunhovd; infant grandson Benjamin
Claude Peik, and two step-brothers,
Lester and Kermit Anderson.

his home near Garner.

Goodell, died Monday (Aug. 25, 2003) at
home.

place at the cemetery.

LE MARS — Roy J. Lyman, 78, of Le Mars,
died Friday (Aug. 22, 2003) at his
residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.
today at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le
Mars with Pastor Matt Wentz of the Le
Mars Church of Christ officiating.
Interment will be in Memorial Cemetery.

Roy Jay Lyman was born Aug. 20, 1925, at
Mason City, Iowa to Roy D. and Martha
(Jackson) Lyman.
Roy was united in marriage to Donna
Woodyard on Sept. 6, 1968, at Mason
City.
Roy had worked for the
Chicago-Northwestern Railroad in Mason
City for several years until moving to
Le Mars in 1977.
In Le Mars, Roy worked for Plymouth Life
until his retirement on May 31, 1990.
Roy was a member of the Le Mars Church
of Christ.
He enjoyed golfing and music and will be
remembered for his compassion for all
who lived and worked at Plymouth Life.
Survivors include his wife, Donna, of Le
Mars; his mother-in-law, Marie Woodyard,
of Le Mars; brothers-in-law and
sisters-in-law, Richard and Dorothy
Porter of Le Mars, Reuben and Ellen
Evenson of Newburgh, Ind., Douglas and
Joanne Higgins of Clarinda; and numerous
nieces and nephews.
Roy was preceded in death by his
parents, Roy D. and Martha Lyman; and
two brothers, Richard and Ora Lyman.

CLARION — Idella “Sis” Ann Scott Brenny,
91, of Clarion, died Sunday (Aug. 24,
2003) at USA Health Care Center in
Clarion.

VIOLA IRENE HUBER
BRITT — Viola Irene Huber passed away
peacefully at Banner Gardens Hospice
House on Saturday (Aug. 23, 2003), the
last day of her 81st year.
She was born in Britt where she grew to
adulthood, married and raised a family.
In 1961, the family moved to Arizona.
Through the years, Viola lived in
Chandler, Phoenix, Payson, and Mesa.
She pursued various hobbies and
assembled numerous collections, but her
long time passion was needlework. Her
family and friends will remember her as
a perfectionist who loved to laugh and
was always game for a new adventure.
She is survived by her husband, William
G. Huber; daughters, Debra Hays of Mesa,
Ariz., and Sue Frandson and Karla
Frandson of San Diego, Calif.;
grandchildren, Eric Frandson of Oakland,
Calif., Robin Hays and Dale Hays of
Mesa, Ariz. and Dawn Hannah and Heather
Frandson of Lemoore, Calif.; sisters
Alma Pergande and Annamarie Olson of

She was preceded in death by her son,

attended St. Joseph Mercy School of
Nursing.
She was employed by St. Joseph Mercy
Hospital.
Norma married Robert J. Smith on 1943 at
St. John’s Catholic Church in San Diego,
Calif.
She is survived by her husband, Robert,
of Mason City; three daughters and their
husbands, Roberta and Dennis Johnson, of
Manly, Ann and Dr. Stephen Welsh of
Manly, and Amy and James Jonas of St.
Cloud, Minn. Also surviving are 10
grandchildren, Timothy, Jason, and
Joseph Johnson, Kevin, Daniel, Matthew
and Katie Welsh, Jeffery, Justin, and
Jonathan Jonas; and three
great-grandchildren, Anthony Johnson,
Jonathan and Nickolas Johnson.

MASON CITY — Marjorie Berdine (Olson)
Sorbo, of Mason City, departed this
world on Thursday (Aug. 21, 2003) at
Heritage Care Center in Mason City.
She was born June 16, 1923, in Rome
Township, Faribault County, Minn. Her
parents were John B. and Anna (Johnson)
Olson. Marjorie was baptized and
confirmed at South Blue Earth Lutheran
Church, Bricelyn, Minn.
On Easter Sunday, March 28, 1948, at the
South Blue Earth Lutheran Church,
Marjorie was united in marriage to
Norlan J. Sorbo in a double wedding
ceremony with her twin sister, Margaret
B. Olson.
Three children were born to this union,
David Keith, LeAnn Marie, and John
Norlan.
She enjoyed baking for her family and
pursued cooking as a career. At one time
she did custom baking.
She also was employed by Allied Mills,
Easter’s Super Value Bakery, and AMPI
Creamery, all in Mason City in food
service. Also, at one time she worked at
Mode O’Day in Mason City.
Marjorie enjoyed sewing quilts,
crocheting and was the author of her own
cookbook “Grandma Sorbo’s Cookbook.” She
enjoyed camping, fishing, and spending
time with her family.
Left to cherish her memory are her
husband of 55 years, Norlan J. Sorbo, of
Mason City; her children, David and
wife, Sandie Sorbo, of Clinton, Mo.,
LeAnn (Sorbo) Weaver and husband,
Charles Weaver Sr., of Mason City, and
John and wife, Charlene Sorbo, of
Holmen, Wis.; her eight grandchildren,

MASON CITY — LeRoy H. “Hiney” Weitzel,
65, of 431 S. Louisiana Ave., died
Monday (Aug. 25, 2003) at the Mercy
Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.
Wednesday at the Bethel United Methodist
Church in Manly, with the Rev. Robert
Cumings officiating. Burial will be in
the Manly Cemetery with full military
honors.

Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. and one hour
prior to service time Wednesday at the

LeRoy H. “Hiney” Weitzel was born on
Feb. 24, 1938, in Belmond, the son of
Omie Weitzel. He attended and received
his education in the Mason School
system.
In February of 1955, he was inducted
into the U.S. Marine Corps. and was
attached to the First Marine Aircraft
Wing and served in various areas in the
South Pacific until his honorable
discharge as a PFC in March 1959.
After his honorable discharge, LeRoy
came back to the Mason City area and was
united in marriage to Darlene Tietz on
July 16, 1960, in Manly.
LeRoy worked for Jacob E. Decker & Son,
International Minerals, and Crystal
Sugar, and also attended North Iowa Area
Community College in Mason City where he
received his education in plumbing, air
conditioning and heating.
After completing his education at NIACC,
he worked for James Refrigeration,
George Black Plumbing and Heating and
for Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa for
22 years until his retirement in 2000.
He enjoyed golfing, traveling, going to
coffee at the mall in Mason City, but
his great love and enjoyment was being
with family and friends.
He was a member of the Bethel United
Methodist Church in Manly, Edward Tosel
American Legion Post 110 of Manly,
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 15016,
Mohave Desert Marine Corp. Association,
Marine Corps League, and was a board
member at the Pioneer Town & Country
Club in Manly.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife,
Darlene Weitzel of Mason City; two sons,
Garvin L. Weitzel and his wife Helen of
Burlington, and Mark A. Weitzel and his
wife Kelly of Wylie, Texas; two
grandchildren, Nicholas and Brock
Weitzel; four brothers, Larry Smith,
Ronnie Smith and his wife Linda, Kenny
Smith, and David Smith, all of Mason
City; four sisters, Beverly Lybarger of
Kensett, Donna Smith of Mason City,
Marilyn Sporing and her husband Chuck of
Kensett, and Carolyn Pedelty and her

cousins, Garvin Ward Jr. and Mary
Margaret Graf both of Mason City; as

He was preceded in death by his mother,

Bachman; two stepsons, Colin

William Lewis Hiscocks, the son
of Robert Sr. and Mavis
(Rapp)Hiscocks, was born Sept.
17, 1931, at Algona. He
graduated from Britt High School
in 1949.
He served his country in the
U.S. Army during the Korean
conflict from Nov. 19, 1952 to
Oct. 21, 1954.
On Nov. 20, 1954, he married
Irene Chizek at St. Patrick’s
Catholic Church in Britt. They
farmed near Britt until 1965,
when they moved to a farm
southeast of Garner.
In addition to being a loving
husband, father, and
grandfather, Bill’s friendly

He was a member of St. Boniface
Catholic Church and the Garner
VFW and American Legion.
He enjoyed serving his community
and over the years served on the
following boards: Hancock County
FSA, Hancock County tax review
board, Ell Township Trustee,
North Central FS board in
Hampton, Garner Farmer’s Co-op
Society (president) and the
Britt Farmer’s Co-op Society.
He was honored with a
meritorious service award for
his service as a 4-H leader for
the Elcon Indians. He was
granted service awards from both
the Ventura and Britt FFA
chapters.
He is survived by his wife,
Irene, of Garner; four children,
Kerry Hiscocks and wife, Denise,
of Ventura, Kathleen Cepak and
husband, Bennett, of Southlake,
Texas, Mark Hiscocks of Garner
and Rita Hiscocks of St. Louis,
Mo.; grandchildren, Ryan
Hiscocks and wife, Brandi, Emily
and Erin Hiscocks, Michael and
Natalie Cepak, Scott and Matt
Hiscocks; and one
great-grand-daughter, Riley
Hiscocks. He is also survived by
siblings, Bonnie Doughan, Don
Hiscocks and wife, Gloria, Jon
Hiscocks, Dean Hiscocks and
wife, Marie, Judy Becker and
husband, Mike; and in-laws
Lorraine and Ken Pruitt (Alan),

He was preceded in death by his

HAROLD R. GRUNHOVD
THOMPSON — Harold R. Grunhovd,
79, of Thompson died Sunday
(Aug. 24, 2003) at Timely
Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo
Center.
Funeral services will be held at
1:30 p.m. today at Bethany
Lutheran Church in Thompson with
Pastor Mark Decker officiating.
Burial will be at Bethel
Lutheran Cemetery in Vinje.
Military rites will be done by
the Thomp-son V.F.W. Color Guard
and Kiester American Legion
Rifle Squad.
Visitation was held Tuesday at
Winter Funeral Home at 245
Harrison St. in Thompson and
will be held one hour before
services at the church.
Harold Reuben Grunhovd was born
March 29, 1924, on a farm near
Joice, Iowa. He was the son of
Helmer and Alpha (Peterson)
Grunhovd.
When Harold was four years old
his father died and after
raising her sons, his mother
married Harvey Anderson.
Harold spent his youth in
Scarville, Iowa, was baptized
and confirmed at Scarville
Immanuel Lutheran Church by Rev.
S. J. Fretheim, and graduated
from Scarville High School in
1941.
Harold married Leonora (Tudy)
Sunde on May 17, 1943. He
entered the Army in May 1943 and
was discharged on January 1946.
He was in the European Theatre
and served in the 789th division
as an anti-aircraft gunner. When
he returned from the war, he
enrolled in Luther College and
graduated on Aug. 18, 1951.
Harold began his 14-year
teaching career in Scarville and
then taught in Seneca, Ledyard,
and Sheffield where he was a
math teacher and girls
basketball coach.
His second career was with Farm
Bureau Insurance as a crop hail
supervisor for 25 years. During
this time Harold and Tudy lived
in Clear Lake and Mankato, Minn.
In 1976 they moved back to
Scarville, where he was mayor
for 12 years. His chicken
gizzard dish was enjoyed in
Scarville and the Legion Hall in
Kiester.
After Harold retired in 1989, he
and Tudy moved to Albert Lea,
Minn., and spent several winters
in Surprise, Ariz.
In April they moved to Thompson,
where Harold was cared for by
his family. In August, Harold
became a resident of Timely
Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo
Center where he passed away on
Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003.
Harold is survived by his wife,
Leonora, of Thompson; two
daughters, Diane (Jim) Kozitza
of Thompson, and Linda (Steve)
Peik of Oelwein; five grandsons,
Warren (Laurel) Kozitza of River
Falls, Wis.; Chad (Amy) Kozitza
of Faribault, Minn.; Matthew
Peik and special friend Kim of
Davenport, Samuel Peik of Iowa
City, and Jared Kozitza of
Thompson; three
great-grandchildren, Jackson,
Emma, and Phoebe Kozitza; and
step-sister Annabelle (Harold)
Knutson of Lake Mills.
Harold was preceded in death by
his parents, Helmer and Alpha;
step-father Harvey Anderson;
infant brother Robert Carlyle,
brother Adolph (Duffy) Grunhovd;
infant grandson Benjamin Claude
Peik, and two step-brothers,
Lester and Kermit Anderson.

Elna H. Stearns, the daughter of
William and Christy (Ryan)
Harbison, was born Nov. 5, 1916,
at Whittemore. She grew up in
Eagle Grove where she graduated
from high school.
On Jan. 21, 1948, she was
married to Walter Stearns at her
parent’s home in Garner. Elna
was employed by the Bell
Telephone Company in Iowa for 45
years retiring in 1981.
Following retirement, she moved
to Garner to be near her family.
In 1990, she moved to Prairie
View Apartments in Garner. She
enjoyed her family, her job and
watching sports on TV.
She was a member of the United
Methodist Church in Garner,
Rebekah Circle and was a former
member of Homemakers Club and
Eastern Star.
She is survived by four sisters
and a brother, Enola Matson of
Chicago, Ill., Lorene Petty and
husband, Jack, of Hutchinson,
Kan., Reuel Pruyn and wife,
Virginia, of Hemet, Calif.,
Clare Molander and husband,
Royal, of Garner and Helene
Maley and husband, Dale, of
Garner; two brothers-in-law,

Gwendolyn was born on April 14,
1907, in Otranto Township,
Mitchell County, to Elmer L. and
Ethel (Van Camp) Wilder.
She married Archie Pike on Nov.
7, 1925 in Austin, Minn.
She liked gardening, started
crocheting at the age of 76 and
did doilies for all her children
and grandchildren.
She spent 62 years on the family
farm. Gwendolyn was a lifelong
member of the Otranto Community
Church, was a member of the
Ladies Aid and a member of
Garden Club.
She also raised sheep. Her home
was always open for coffee and
meals and was a summer home for
relatives.
She was preceded in death by her
parents, husband in 1983;
daughter, Dawn McCormack; three
brothers; two sisters; three
grandchildren and three
sons-in-law.
Gwendolyn is survived by seven
daughters, Georgia Lindley of
