MARIE A. TIMM

THORNTON - Marie A. Timm, 98, formerly of Thornton, died Wednesday (July 29, 2003) at the Heritage Nursing Home in Bancroft

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thornton, with the Rev. Marlin Ingebretson officiating. Burial will be in Zion Reformed Cemetery in rural Sheffield.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until time of services at the church.

Marie Angeline Timm was born Feb. 19, 1905, in Marion Township, Franklin County, daughter of Henry W. and Gertie (Gurdes) Fekkers. She attended rural schools in Franklin County. Marie was confirmed in the Meservey Reformed Church in 1923.

In 1925, Marie married Chris Steenhard. To this union, four children were born. Chris preceded her in death.

In 1957, Marie married Henry Timm in Thornton and he preceded her in death in 1980.

She worked for many years at the Clear Lake Bakery.

She enjoyed crocheting and was a wonderful cook.

Marie moved into the Pleasant View Apartments in Thornton, in 1980, until November of 1999, when she moved into the Sheffield Care Center.

Marie A. Timm died Wed-nesday, July 30, 2003, at the Heritage Nursing Home in Bancroft, at the age of 98. She had been a resident there since August, 2002.

She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Shirley Hellman and her husband, Albert, of Bancroft; four grandchildren, Dennis Steenhard and his wife, Lori, of Elmore, Minn., Lois Steenhard and Walter Gruber, of Alameda, Calif., Lona Giovannoni and her husband, Kevin, of Alameda, Calif., and David Steenhard and his wife, Nan Ting, of Louisville, Ky.; five great-granddaughters; two stepgreat-grandchildren; two stepdaughters-in-law, Ruth Timm, of Clear Lake and Marcelene Houg, of Belmond; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Chris Steenhard and Henry Timm; four children, Darell, Lois, Larry, and Doris in in-fancy; two stepsons, Ralph and Roy Timm; and a stepdaughter, Frances Smith.

JOSEPH ALBERT FOLLMUTH

ST. ANSGAR - Joseph Albert Follmuth, 71, of rural St. Ansgar, was called to his eternal home on Thursday (July 31, 2003), surrounded by his family at Methodist Hospital in Rochester.

He was born July 24, 1932, to Joseph A. and Marie (Hanson) Follmuth in Mitchell County. Baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, Joe attended Lyle (Minn.) Public Schools, graduating in 1950.

He served in the United States Army from 1953 until he was honorably discharged in 1955 as a sergeant at Fort Sill, Okla.

On June 5, 1955 he was united in marriage to Marlys Johnson at Mona Lutheran Church in Mona. They have lived and farmed in rural St. Ansgar, Iowa, all their lives.

Joe was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lyle and of American Legion Post 105.

He was a dairy and grain farmer his entire life. A mem-ber of the Pleasant Hill Cemetery board, his greatest joy was his crops, his cows and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed playing pool with his buddies.

He always enjoyed sharing coffee and conversations with his many friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marlys, of St. Ansgar; four daughters, Kathie (Dave) Dahl of Lyle, Minn., Arlene (Kevin) Myhre of St. Ansgar, Gloria (Dick) Reding of Osage and Joy (Doug) Salz of St. Ansgar; one son, Steve (Corky) Follmuth of Stacyville; 13 grandchildren, Amy (Kevin) Stambaugh; Laura (Nick) Kuennen; Amanda Dahl; Anna, Rachel, Nicole Reding; Jeff Myhre; Kayla, Garrett, Mackenzie, Dillon Follmuth; Riley and Paige Salz; two great-grandchildren, Miranda and Kade Stambaugh; one sister, Ruth (Floyd) Kaster of Spring Valley, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, A. and Marie Follmuth; Uncle Albert and Aunt Manda Hanson; sister, Lorraine Gunderson Eye.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lyle, Minn., with the Rev. Barbara Finley-Shea officiating. Interment is at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Mona with military rites by Lyle American Legion Post 105.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Worlein Funeral Home in Austin, Minn., with a 7 p.m. prayer service. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services on Sunday at the church.

TITONKA - Evert J. Sleper, 87, of Titonka, died Friday (Aug. 1, 2003) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona.

TIMIO 'TIM' CHAVEZ

MASON CITY - Timio (Tim) Chavez, 77, of 708 South Polk Place, died Thursday morning (July 31, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Podhajsky officiating. Interment will follow in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. today with a scripture wake service at 5 p.m. at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. SE, Mason City, Iowa. There will be a Spanish Rosary to conclude the evening.

Visitation will continue one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

Tim was born April 7, 1926, the son of Juan and Antonia (Martinez) Chavez in Monday, Texas.

On May 26, 1951, Tim was united in marriage to Sarah Barragan at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mason City. To this union three children were born.

Tim loved being outdoors, whether he was working in the yard or tending to his garden. He enjoyed listening to Mexican music, joking around, driving in his car, and making his annual trip to Wichita Falls, Texas. Tim also looked forward to meeting his friends at the Cancun Mexican Restaurant. Tim enjoyed his friendships with all.

Tim was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, and the Hispanic Club.

Those thankful for having shared in Tim's life include his three children, Phyllis Maskarina of Mason City, Andrew Chavez and his wife, Donna, of Mason City, and Raymond Chavez and his wife, Beth, of Mason City; one sister, Julia Broyles and her husband, Don, of Wichita Falls, Texas; four brothers, Mike Chavez of Pico Rivera, Calif., Tony Chavez and his wife, Elaine, of Albert Lea, Minn., Pete Chavez and his wife, Frances, of Wichita Falls, Texas, Joe Chavez and his wife, Angie, of Wichita Falls, Texas; five sisters-in-law, Candelaria Chavez of Wichita Falls, Texas, Ramona Reynozo of Kansas City, Kan., Carmen Alvarez of Mason City, Carolyn Huston Mason City, and Josi Gasca of Mason City; two brothers-in-law, Jose Barragan of St. Paul, Minn., and C.R. Barragan of Minneapolis; six grandchildren, Mike Chavez and Jennifer Schultz, Adam Chavez, Jamie Maskarina, George Maskarina, Mariah Chavez, and Mikayla Chavez; three step grandchildren, Levi Andersen, Ryan and Mason Compton; four great-grandchildren, Destiny Smith, Jeffrey Chavez, Sarah Chavez, and Eavie Chavez; many nieces and nephews; and two special cousins, Maria and Lupe Barragan.

Mr. Chavez was preceded in death by his parents, wife Sarah in 1998; two sisters, one brother, one half sister, and three half brothers.

LAKE MILLS - Carol J. Olsen, 70, of Lake Mills, died Friday (Aug. 1, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m Monday at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with the Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating.

There is no visitation; her body was donated to The University of Des Moines Science Department.

Family will greet friends prior to the service at the church on Monday morning.

MASON CITY — Beulah J. Frelund, 80, of Mason City, died Saturday (Aug. 2, 2003) at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 2502 South Jefferson, with the Rev. Joel Dahlen officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Beulah Josephine Walker was born June 10, 1923, the daughter of Abel T. and Alice Ethel (Palmerton) Walker in Northwood, Iowa.

She met her future husband, Selmer, at a Mason City Band Festival evening mass band concert in 1940, the next year they were married.

She was a 1941 graduate of Mason City High School.

On December 14, 1941, Beulah was united in marriage to Selmer O. Frelund at the Lutheran Church parsonage in Mason City.

To this union two daughters, Jo and Ruth, were born.

Just prior to her marriage she worked at the State Brand Creamery. Beulah also served as a nurse’s aide at Mercy Hospital, and as a seamstress for Kellum’s and Tyler-Ryan.

She was a long-time member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.

Beulah was a people person, loved music, sewing, baking, Bible study and enjoyed the love of her family and friends. Her ready smile will always be remembered.

On September 27, 2002, she entered the Good Shepherd Health Center. The family can not say enough about the fine care she received from the faculty and staff.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Selmer O. Frelund of Mason City; her daughters, Jo Hansen and her husband, Harold, of Mason City, and Ruth Korte of Mason City; her grandchildren, Amy Crews and her husband, Carter, of High Ridge, Mo., Douglas Hansen and his wife, Debra, of Hampton, Julie Kivisto of Mason City, and Heather Bryan and her husband, Wes, of Charlottesville, Va.; and her six great-grandchildren, Cameron Crews, Jacob and Ciara Hansen, Nicholas Kivisto, and Jake and Justin Bryan.

Mrs. Frelund was preceded in death by her parents, Abel J. and Alice Ethel (Palmerton) Walker and her brother, Frank Walker.

GREENE — Funeral services for Earl J. Herman, 83, of 409 North Fifth Street, Greene, will be held Tuesday, (Aug. 5, 2003) at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene with Rev. Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Earl John Herman was born October 29, 1919, in rural Union Township, near Roseville, Floyd County, a son of Peter Joseph and Mary Catherine (Sinnwell) Hermann, and died Friday, (Aug. 1, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, East Campus in Mason City.

He received his education in the rural Floyd County Schools and attended the Sacred Heart Academy in Greene. As a young man he farmed with his father. On February 6, 1943, he was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Smith at the Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City. Earl and Shirley farmed in the Greene area for 42 years before retiring and moving into town.

Earl’s interests included shooting pool, playing cards, fishing in Canada and deer hunting. He was always willing to help out at the Fish Frys at the Church and with the Sportsman’s Club. He will be remembered giving rides to people in town with his hackney trotter and painted buggy. He was an accomplished harmonica player who enjoyed giving concerts to those wanting to listen, and was awarded third place in the harmonica contest at the Iowa State Fair in 2002.

Those thankful for having shared this life of such a good and honest man include his loving wife of sixty years, Shirley of Greene; his children, Carol (Jim) Weaver of Rockwell, Beverly (Gary) Boveia of Waverly, Connie (Doug) Litterer of Greene, and Ronnie (Kathy) Herman of Greene; ten grandchildren, Sara Adelmund, Tracy Martzahn, Kristy Hovde, Michele Casey, Brenda Reed, Chad Herman, Andres Herman, Shawn Litterer, Tony Boveia, Joe Boveia; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Catherine Wefel of Waverly; and sister-in-law, Deon Herman of Osage.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Delores Herman, Irene Uetz, Bernice Metz; one brother, Art Herman; and grandson, Derek A. Herman.

MASON CITY — James M. “Jim” Benedict, 60, of 523 S. Adams St., Mason City, died Monday (Aug. 4, 2003) at his home.

D. SAM ERICKSON

MANKATO, Minn. — D. Sam Erickson, 72, died Thursday (July 24, 2003) in Brick N.J.

He gifted his bodyto the University of New Jersey Medical Center for Alzheimer’s research.

A memorial celebration will be held at 2 p.m. July 1, 2004, at the First Presbyterian Church in Mankato, Minn.

Dennis Lee Erickson was born Jan. 1, 1931, in Westbrook, Minn., son of Edgar and Anna (Roby) Erickson. He joined the U.S. Army Air Force in 1946.

He married Ann Conklin, a Clear Lake graduate, on Nov. 19, 1950. They lived in Clear Lake 1954-1956 when Sam worked for the Frank J. Enbusk CPA Firm as manager of the Clear Lake office.

Sam held a B.A. in elementary education and an M.S. in accounting from Arizona State University.

He was Professor of Tax at Mankato State University 1967-1992 and a National Tax Lecturer for the American Institute of CPAs 1970-1995.

In 1978 he received, from the MN Society of CPAs, the first R. Glen Berryman Award for Outstanding Service.

Upon his retirement, the Sam Erickson Endowment Fund to provide accounting scholarships was established at Minnesota State University, Mankato, by colleagues and students who wrote, “Sam has made a lasting impact on tax education in the state of Minnesota and nationally.”

Sam belonged to the Mankato Masonic Lodge, was Potentate of Osman Shrine Temple, St. Paul Minn. 1981, a member of the Imperial Shrine Finance & Audit Committee for 23 years serving as Chairman 1985-1991 and was Imperial Shrine Auditor 1991-92.

He enjoyed traveling, shelling, was fascinated with family history and proud to have searched for, discovered, visited and entertained so many Norwegian relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Dave.

He is survived by his wife Ann; his daughters, Sally Weerts of Jacksonville Fla., Mrs. Randy (Nancy) Eckerson of Rochester Minn., Mrs. Rick (Kathy) Keough of Toms River N.J.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Janet Shaw of Dovray Minn.; and a step-father, Hans Asmussen of Westbrook Minn.; Jean Knutson of Clear Lake is an aunt through marriage.

ROCKWELL — Terry L. Wedmore, 55, of 104 W. Elm St. Rockwell, died Sunday (Aug. 3, 2003) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 307 E. Elm St. in Rockwell with the Rev. Craig Steimel and the Rev. Ken Gehling, celebrants of the Mass.

Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Rockwell. Full military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Gallagher Post #208 of Rockwell.

Terry was born Aug. 15, 1947, in Mason City. Terry graduated from Mason City High School, Class of 1965. He graduated from North Iowa Area Community College and attended Iowa State University.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968. He earned two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars during the Vietnam Conflict.

On May 27, 1978, Terry was united in marriage to Marsha Adams.

Terry served as mayor of Rockwell for eight years and served on the Rockwell City Council for four years. He was co-founder of the Rockwell EMTs with his father-in-law, Dr. Vincent Adams.

Terry served on numerous city, county and state committees including: E-911 Advisory Board, Rockwell-Swaledale School Booster and Music Booster Committees, EMS Advisory Board and State Disaster Committee.

He served as a lector at Sacred Heart Church.

Terry was the current president of the Mercy City Family Credit Union. He was also a current member of the American Legion Gallagher Post and the Rockwell Economic Development Committee.

Terry was previously employed as a fireman and fire inspector with the Mason City Fire Department.

Terry had worked at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa since 1975. He had been employed as Director of Risk Management and Safety. Terry currently was Director of Communications and Security.

Terry enjoyed attending his children’s activities, hunting, fishing, playing cards, reading and cheering on the Atlanta Braves baseball team.

Those thankful for having shared in Terry’s life include his wife, Marsha; children, Amber Wedmore of Des Moines, Abbey (Ben) Pitzenberger of North Liberty, Adam Wedmore at home and LeeAnn Leitner of Mason City; three grandchildren Jessica, Deryck and Cameron, of Mason City; parents, Charlene and Donald Wedmore, of Mason City; sisters, JoDee (Gene) Ward of Garner and Donna Theis, Chandler, Ariz.; brothers Randy (Cheryl) Wedmore, of Gilbert, Ariz. and Jim (Deb) Wedmore, of Tucson, Ariz.

Terry will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends.
