ILA WILSON


CLEAR LAKE — Ila Wilson, 63, of 128 Mars Hill Drive, Clear Lake, died Friday (Aug. 15, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City.

Ila was born July 29, 1940, in Mason City, the daughter of Stanley and Florence (Pforr) Oredsen. Ila graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1958, and then at-tended Hamilton Business College in Mason City.

Ila was united in marriage to Gaylen Wilson on April 25, 1961, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Gaylen and Ila lived in Clear Lake then moved to Swaledale in 1985 and were the owner/operators of the The Olde Pub until 1998 when they moved back to Clear Lake.

Ila worked at the Muskie Lounge and the Clear Lake VFW until she was diagnosed with cancer in 2000. Ila was known for her laugh and her smile.

Ila is survived by her husband, Gaylen; three children, Beth Dorenkamp and her husband, Gary, of Thornton, Wade Wilson and his wife, Kaye, of Clear Lake, and Blaine Wilson and his wife, Becky, of Swaledale; one sister, Mavis Whelan and her husband, Robert, of Clear Lake; one brother, Steve Ore-dsen, of Mesa, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Stephanie and Adam Dorenkamp, Cody, Samantha, and Cooper Wilson, and Amanda Obregon, her husband, Dave, and Andrea Wilson; and one great-grandchild, Jaylah Obregon.

Ila was preceded in death by her parents.

CORWITH — Charlie Christopher Quebe, 88, of Corwith, died Friday (Aug. 15, 2003) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith. Burial will be in the Corwith Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Corwith and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.

DOWS — Tama Lou Harkema, 45, of Dows, died Wednesday (Aug. 13, 2003) at her home in Dows.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Dows Community Funeral Home, 100 N. Lee St. in Dows, with the Rev. David Gobeli officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Dows.

Visitation was held Friday at the Dows Community Funeral Home and will be held one hour prior to services today.

BRITT — Carol L. Kline, 68, of Britt, died Thursday (Aug. 14, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Britt, with the Rev. Janet Wearda officiating. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Ewing Funeral Home, 178 Center St. W. in Britt, and one hour prior to services at the church.

BRITT — Opal Ross, 85, of Britt, died Friday (Aug. 15, 2003) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Lutheran Church in Britt, with the Rev. Dr. John Meyer officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Ewing Funeral Home, 178 Center St. W in Britt, and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

LESTER DAVID PIERCE


MASON CITY — Lester David Pierce, 49, of 1932 S. Taft Ave. in Mason City, died Monday (Aug. 11, 2003) at his home.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City officiating. There will be a flag presentation by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m.until 7 p.m. Sunday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, with a 6 p.m. scripture wake service. Visitation will also be one hour prior to service time Monday at the chapel.

Lester David Pierce was born on July 15, 1954, in Mason City, the son of Robert Junior and Marlyss Jeniene (Huff) Pierce. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1972.

After completing his schooling he was inducted into the U.S. Army serving most of his time in Italy until his honorable discharge.

He was united in marriage to Debra Cabrerea in 1972, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. After his honorable discharge he moved to Sioux City and worked in the Sioux City area for 20 years.

In 1999, Lester moved to Mason City and worked at Graham Mfg. Company in Mason City until the time of his death.

He enjoyed fishing, being outdoors fixing things, bowling, and collecting antiques, but his great love was being with his family and friends.

He was a member of the CB Club and the Eagles in Mason City.

Survivors include a brother, Jesse Pierce and special friend, Cherie McClemons, of Mason City; a sister, Bonnie McGee and her husband Wilbert “Gene” of Arlington, Texas; his step-mother, Arlene Pierce, of Mason City; special friend, Denise Ward of Mason City; many aunts, uncles, and many, many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Junior Pierce, on Feb. 21, 2000, his mother, Marlyss Jeniene Pierce, on June 6, 1991; a sister who died in infancy, a father-in-law, Andrew Cabrerea; and a niece, Lenora Redwine.

CHARLIE CHRISTOPHER QUEBE


CORWITH - Charlie Christopher Quebe, 88, of Corwith, died Friday (Aug. 15, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith with the Rev. Ron Feuerhak officiating. Burial will be in the Corwith Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Corwith and again one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Charlie was born on July 21, 1915, at McGregor, Texas, the son of Henry William and Alwine (Preuss) Quebe. His family moved to Indianapolis, Ind., 15 years later. On Sept. 7, 1940, he married Katheryn Hankins in Indianapolis. They moved to Corwith in 1946, where Charlie operated the Corwith Welding Shop until he retired in 1985. For 15 years, they spent their winters in Mesa, Ariz., and the summers in Corwith, where Charlie enjoyed garden-ing and golf.

He is survived by his wife, Katheryn Quebe of Corwith; a son, Jerry Quebe and his wife, Lisbeth, of Soldiers Grove, Wis.; three grandchildren, Chad Darby and his wife, Marianne, Tualatin, Ore., Tara Bleitz, Fort Meyers, Fla., and Tracy Marbach and her husband, Hugh, McChord Air Force Base, Wash.; five great grandchildren; two brothers, Herbert Quebe and his wife, Pat, Springfield, Ill., and Fred Quebe and his wife, Wilma, Indianapolis, Ind., and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Phyllis Powell and her husband, David; two granddaugh-ters, Jacque Powell and Dana Quebe, and five brothers and two sisters.

Memorials may be directed to the American Lung Association in memory of Charlie C. Quebe.

GLENDALE, Ariz.- Charles R. Schulz, 87, of Glendale, Ariz., and formerly of Rockford, died Friday (Aug. 15, 2003) at the Encore Care Center, Phoenix.

JOLYN R. NEMIELA


GRINNELL - Jolyn R. Nemiela, 15, of Grinnell, daughter of Richard Nemiela and Chandra Capoff, formerly of the Mason City area, died Thursday (Aug. 14, 2003) due to injuries sustained in a car accident near Kellogg.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. The family will be present from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday.

TIMOTHY DAVID HEGTVEDT


BELLVUE, Colo. - Timothy David Hegtvedt passed away in Bellvue, Colo., August 10, 2003, at 12:36 am.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 30, 2003, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsyl-vania Ave., Mason City.

Tim was born in Mason City at Mercy Hospital. He graduated from Mankato East High and Mankato State University in Minnesota with a master's degree in law en-forcement.

Tim spent many years in law enforcement at Winnebago, Minn., and Gunnison and Golden Colo.

He was a successful Elvis impersonator and avid outdoorsman. He was currently working at American Furniture Warehouse in Fort Collins, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Eddie and Palma Hegtvedt, and Merrill J. Fiala.

Tim is survived by two daughters, Stephanie of Eagan, Minn., and Samantha Hegt-vedt of Prior Lake, Minn.; his parents, Dave and Marilyn Hegtvedt of Cedar Park, Texas; sisters, Tami Nourie of Mankato, Minn., and Toni Sullivan of The Colonies, Texas; brother, Tory Hegtvedt of Round Rock, Texas; grandmother, Gladyc Fiala of Mason City, and many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by all.

CAROL L. KLINE


BRITT - Carol L. Kline, 68, of Britt, passed away Thursday (Aug. 14, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Her funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Britt with Pastor Janet Wearda officiating. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Carol, the daughter of Orvin and RuBee Swanson Friedow, was born Aug. 5, 1935, in Forest City, Iowa. Carol attended Britt schools and graduated from Britt High School with the class of 1953.

On July 17, 1955, Carol was united in marriage with Dennis Kline at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Carol was employed at the Britt News Tribune for over 20 years, and retired from PSI in Belmond in 1992. Carol served as a volunteer at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital following her retirement.

Carol was an avid reader. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, quilting and beading. She also enjoyed traveling with the Winnebago Itasca Travelers Club, which she served as secretary. Some of her travels took her to Alaska, Canada and Arizona.

Carol is survived by her husband Dennis; her children: Rick Kline and his wife, Mary, of Monticello, Minn., Rhonda Bellard and her husband, Larry, of Panora, Dan Kline and his wife, Pam, of Britt, Denise Jakoubek and her husband, Doug, of Britt, and Dwight Kline and his wife, Jill, of Stallings, N.C.; grandchildren, Evan, Tony and his wife, Abbie, Tim, Travis, Reed, Lauren, Regan, Adam, Joshua, Danielle, Derica, Makali, Cooper, and Annabeth, and one brother, William Friedow of Britt.

OPAL ROSS


BRITT - Opal Ross, 85, of Britt passed away Friday (Aug. 15, 2003) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services for Opal Ross will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Britt with the Rev. Dr. John Meyer officiating. Burial will take place at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha.

Friends may greet the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Ewing Funeral Home, 178 Center St. W. in Britt and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Opal, the daughter of Charlie and Clara Heckerson Hall, was born April 18, 1918, at the family home in Kana-wha. She grew up in the Kanawha area, where she attended country school and graduated from Kanawha High School in 1935. Following high school, she attended Chillicothe Business College. Opal then returned to Kana-wha, where she was employed by the Farmers State Bank.

On June 28, 1939, Opal was united in marriage with B. Donald Ross at the Kana-wha Lutheran Church. The couple made their home in Corwith until 1944 when they moved to Britt, where they raised their family.

Opal was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Britt, where she taught Sunday school and was active in the women's groups. She was also a member of the Notebena Women's Club in Britt.

Opal loved gardening, es-pecially her flowers. She enjoyed embroidery and sewing, and loved shopping. Opal is remembered for her kindness, compassion and generosity toward others, especially her family.

Opal is survived by her husband, B. Donald; daughter, Vicki Peterson and her husband, Stuart, of Woodbury, Minn.; two sons, Vincent Ross and his wife, Armon, Eden Prairie, Minn., and Vaughan R. Ross of Des Moines; six grandchildren, Allyson and Timothy Czaja, Angela and Daniel Olson, Nathan Ross, Scott and Judy Stolley-Peterson, Valerie and Steve Lambert, and Vachelle and Cameron Johnston; five great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Clara, Eleanor, Hailey and Josie, and special cousin, Ed Engstrom and his wife, Bessie, of Kanawha.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

BRITT — Gene Doughan, 78, formerly of Dexter, Minn., died Monday (Aug. 18, 2003) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital.

MASON CITY — Janet P. Turner of 1520 First St. SW died Friday (Aug. 15, 2003) at home.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at the First Presbyterian Church, 201 Willowbrook Drive, with the Rev. Terry Hamilton-Poore officiating. There will be no visitation.

The body has been donated to the University of Iowa School of Medicine in Iowa City.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa or First Presbyterian Church.

ARNOLD INGVALD THOMPSON


NORTHWOOD — Arnold Ingvald Thompson, 87, of rural Northwood, died Monday (Aug. 18, 2003) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood where he had been a resident since February of this year.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Lutheran Church, 309-Ninth St. N. in Northwood, with the Rev. Paul Holmer officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood and one hour prior to service time Thursday at the church.

The family of Arnold Ingvald Thompson has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Northwood Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Unit in his memory.

Arnold Ingvald Thompson was born on Aug. 29, 1915, in rural Silver Lake Township, rural Northwood, the son of Jewell Martin and Inger (Haugerud) Thompson.

He was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Silver Lake Lutheran Church, rural Northwood, and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at the Shell Rock Lutheran Church, rural Northwood.

Arnold farmed with his father on the home farm west of Northwood until his father’s death in 1948. He cared for his mother the last several years of her life until she died in 1966.

After his father’s death, Arnold continued to farm the family farm until his retirement in 1978.

Arnold loved being outdoors, taking care of his land, his dog Pepper, and enjoyed entertaining those close to him on his harmonica.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Berneice Branstad, of Northwood; two brothers, Jewell O. Thompson and his wife, Lillian, of Albert Lea, Minn., and Clifford Thompson and his wife, Harriet, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two special nephews, Judean “Geno” Thompson and Gary Thompson of Albert Lea, Minn.; many other nieces and nephews, friends and longtime neighbors and extended family of Branstads, and a special friend, Dennis Nagel, of Northwood.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Glen Thompson.

ALICE DELANA SPEAKAR


MASON CITY — Alice Delana Speakar, 90, 302 Second St. N.E., died Sunday (Aug. 17, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Care Center.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Derik Yarian officiating. Interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7:30 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Memorials may be given to the Alice Speakar Memorial Fund.

Alice was born March 4, 1913, in Waverly, the daughter of Charles L. and Etta Mae (Jordon) Whitney. She graduated from Mason City High School.

Alice married Alexander Speakar on July 24, 1932, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason City. She worked at Decker’s Packing Plant.

They moved to Clear Lake where they owned and operated Oakwood Grocery Store until 1961. She also worked at Halford’s Café and later operated the Lake Café. She worked at Jensen’s Grocery and Easter’s Grocery Stores.

Alice and Alex enjoyed spending their winters in Harlingen, Texas with relatives and friends. They also enjoyed dancing at the Surf in their younger years.

Her hobbies were crocheting and gardening. She enjoyed the humor of Red Skelton and Johnny Carson.

First in her life, she was a Christian and a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Alice is survived by four children, Joan Bales and her husband, Ken, of Mason City, Sonia Molencamp and her husband, Larry, of Muscatine, Robert Speakar and his wife, Aletha, of Clear Lake, and Kathleen Thomsen and her husband, Eric, of Muscatine; eight grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alexander, May 29, 1997; two brothers, Marion and Russell Whitney; one sister, Vivan Loeckle; and one grandson, Brad Bales.

WILLIAM H. ‘BILL’ LICHTSINN


CLEAR LAKE — William H. “Bill” Lichtsinn, 89, of Clear Lake, died Monday (Aug. 18, 2003) at the IOOF Home in Mason City.

Private family graveside services will be held in the near future with inurnment at Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City.

Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, is in charge of arrangements.

Bill was born Jan. 13, 1914, at Little Rock, Iowa, the son of Herman and Kate (De Witt) Lichtsinn.

On May 14, 1938, he was united in marriage to Irene Paulus. The had one son, Ronald.

Bill retired from Armour in Mason City in 1976. He completed many remodeling and carpenter jobs for his family and friends.

Bill, along with his son Ron and his wife, Irene, built many houses in Mason City.

He is survived by his son, Ron and Ruth Lichtsinn, of Clear Lake; four grandchildren, Robert Lichtsinn, of Kansas City, Mo., Christine (Mrs. Jon) Hanna of Tulsa, Okla., Holly (Mrs. Bruce) Cammers, of Mason City, and Ron II (Hope) Lichtsinn of Forest City; three step-grandchildren, Annette (Mrs. Michael) Thompson, of Des Moines, David (Teresa) Janssen, of Mason City, and Kay (Mrs. Scott) Grein of Sioux Falls, S.D.. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by two half-sisters, Helen Siefken of Osage, and Maye Thompson of Denver, Colo.; his half-brother, Harm Eggena Jr. of Rockford, and brothers-in-law, Louis and Ray Paulus.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, in September of 2001; his father and mother; step-father, Harm Eggena Sr., brothers, George and Charlie Lichtsinn; and sister, Rena Uhlenhopp; step-brothers, Albert, Rudolf and John Eggena; step-sister, Ann Klunder; and brother-in-law, Harold Paulus.
