ARNOLD H. ENG

MASON CITY- Arnold H. Eng, 84, of 4 Third St. N.E. died Sunday (Sept. 23, 2001) at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

His body was cremated and buried in a private family service at Park Cemetery in Nora Springs.

His memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 29, 2001) at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. David J. Anderson, officiating.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or to the Mason City Public Library.

Born April 17, 1917, Mr. Eng was the son of Herman and Ida (Straube) Eng, Nora Springs. He attended the Rock Grove Township School, and was graduated from Nora Springs High School in 1934.

After attending the Army Signal Corps School at the University of Minnesota, he was stationed at Camp Kohler, Sacramento, Calif.

On April 24, 1941, he married Harriett Thompson of Nora Springs and they farmed in that area until moving to Mason City in 1979.

Arnold was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Nora Springs, later joining St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City. He was involved in many activities in both churches.

For more than 30 years he was associated with the ASCS in Floyd County, serving on both the Township and County committees.

Arnold was a devoted husband and father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather. As long as he was able, he enjoyed taking care of his flower gardens. He was an avid reader, and ever since he could remember, a die-hard Cubs fan.

Those left to share the memories of his life include his wife, Harriett, of Mason City; two daughters, Michele Eng, of Mason City; Valerie and her husband, Rex Ennen, of Forest City; a granddaughter, Alicia Rozen, of Forest City; a grandson, John Rozen and his wife, Ammie, of Corwith; a stepgrandson, Bret Ennen, of Clear Lake; a stepgranddaughter, Alyssa Ennen, of Clear Lake, and one great-grandson, Skyler Rozen, of Corwith.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

ROBERT 'BOB' GENE BARTUSEK

NORA SPRINGS - Robert "Bob" Gene Bartusek, 72, of Nora Springs, died Sunday (Sept. 23, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Richard Pippert, of the United Methodist Church in Nora Springs, officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday in the Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield, with military honors by the Nora Springs American Legion Post #449.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today and one hour prior to service time on Thursday at the chapel.

Robert "Bob" Gene Bartusek, was born on Jan. 18, 1929, in Mason City, the son of Cleo and Margaret (McIlhatton) Bartusek. He attended and received his education in the Mason City school system, graduating from Mason City High School in 1948.

In August of 1948, he was inducted into the U.S. Army serving in Okinawa before going to Korea serving in the 9th Infantry Division during the Korean Conflict until his honorable discharge in May 1951.

After his honorable discharge he came back to Mason City and was united in marriage to Marlys Hoskins on Sept. 29, 1951, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

After their marriage, Bob attended and graduated from Mason City Junior College and also attended and graduated from Hamilton Business College in Mason City. Bob worked for Interstate Power Company in Mason City, as a lineman for 30 years until his retirement.

He enjoyed collecting high line electricity insulators, enjoyed traveling to electric insulator shows, watching sports on TV, and was an avid Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Cubs, and Iowa football college fan, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and grandchildren.

He was a member of the National Insulator Association, life member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars in Mason City, and a member of the Nora Springs American Legion Post #449 and was past commander, life member of the 2nd Division Indian Head Association of the national chapter, and life member of the 2nd Division of the Indian Head Association of the Iowa Chapter.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marlys Bartusek, of Nora Springs; three children, Denise Rottinghaus and her husband, Michael, of Nora Springs, Dennis Bartusek and his wife, Kristy, of Tempe, Ariz., and David Bartusek and his wife, Cindy, of Osage; six grandchildren, Jim and Brandon Rottinghaus, Trevor, Mackenzie, Shae, and Austin Bartusek; a sister, Shirley Suby and her husband, Leon, of Mason City; an aunt, Gladys Finch, of Mason City; a niece, Christy Wass, of Norfolk, Va., and a nephew, Scott Suby, of Schaumburg, Ill.; as well as other relatives and many friends.

His parents, and a stepfather preceded him in death.

REBA POWERS

FOREST CITY - Reba Powers, 91, of Forest City, died Friday (Sept. 21, 2001) at the Algona Manor Care Center in Algona.

Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at the United Methodist Church in Forest City with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City.

Reba R. Powers, daughter of William and Ruth (Kelley) Taylor, was born Jan. 27, 1910, in Forest City. She graduated from a local country school in 1924. She met and married William Smith of Kirksville, Mo. in 1929. To this union were born eight children, Eugene (wife Shirley), Alice (husband Art), Frank (wife Barbara), James (wife Sandra), Mary (husband David), Dewey (wife Ruth), Lois (husband Rick), and Lawrence (wife Kathleen).

Reba and Bill farmed different places in the area until buying a farm near Fertile. William died in 1950, after which Reba farmed with the help of her children, and later worked at the Forest City Hospital and the local nursing home.

She married Jim Pospisil in 1956 and he passed away in 1966. In 1978 she married Maynard Powers of Crystal Lake.

During this marriage she joined the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake. Maynard died in 1992, leaving Reba alone again.

For several years after his death Reba lived at the Town Square Apartments in Forest City, leaving only recently to live at the Algona Manor Care Center to be near some of her many grandchildren.

Reba is survived by six children and their spouses, Eugene and Shirley Smith, of Mason City, James and Sandra Smith, of Phoenix, Ariz., Mary and David Tiedens, of Overguard, Ariz., Dewey and Ruth Smith, of Pequet Lake, Minn., Lois and Rick Lowenberg, of Iowa City, and Lawrence and Kathleen Smith, of South Carolina; two sisters, Marjorie Gorball, of Forest City and Doris Swain, of Butler, Mo.; and 27 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren. Also, three stepchildren, Marlene Bushman, of Crystal Lake, Jack Powers, of Garner, and Karen Hanson, of Forest City, along with many step-grandchildren.

Reba was preceded in death by her parents, three husbands, a daughter, Alice; a son, Frank; and a brother and his wife, Carroll and Helga Taylor. She will be missed by many people.

BARTON 'BART' KARL FRONING

NORA SPRINGS -Barton "Bart" Karl Froning, 56, of Nora Springs, died Tuesday (Sept. 25, 2001) at Broad lawn Hospital in Des Moines.

His funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Ruth Hansen officiating. Burial will be in the Park Cemetery in Nora Springs, with military graveside honors by the H.D.S. American Legion Post #449 in Nora Springs.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, and one hour prior to service time on Friday at the church.

The family of Barton "Bart" Karl Froning has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be directed to the family.

Barton "Bart" Karl Froning was born on Nov. 12, 1944, in Mason City, the son of Karl and Ruth (Bonjour) Froning.

He was baptized at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City and attended and received his education in the Mason City School system, graduating from Mason City High School in 1963.

Bart was inducted into the U.S. Marine Corps serving five years in the Corps, and served two tours of duty with the Recon Special Ops in Vietnam.

After his honorable discharge he came back to Mason City and was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart Linda Davis on February 1, 1969, in Mason City.

For 30 years Bart worked as an iron worker for the Iron Workers Local #67, working mostly in the state of Iowa. Bart was a very hard worker, and was very proud of his job. He was also a very devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and also loved camping with his family, and any other activities that involved his family.

He was a member of the Iron Workers Local #67 for 30 years.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Linda Kay Froning, of Nora Springs; his children, Dawn Miller and her husband Michael, Jamie Froning and his wife, Nicky, and Jason Froning and special friend, Liz Eckhardt, all of Nora Springs; four grandchildren, Chase, Skyler, and Harley Froning and Brianna Miller; his three sisters and a brother, Beverly Arp and her husband, Marvin, of Manly, Georgia Holm and her husband, Darrell, of Mason City, Noreen Thompson, of Clear Lake, and Gene Froning, of Mt.Olivet, Ky.; several nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and many friends.

His parents, maternal and paternal grandparents; a nephew; and all his aunts and uncles preceded him in death.

Bart was a very special man who had an unbelievable love for his family and friends, and always put them first.

BLANCHE 'PAT' WALSH

MESA, Ariz. - Blanche "Pat" Walsh, 94, formerly of Mason City, died Sunday (Sept. 23, 2001) in Mesa, Ariz.

Pat was born Oct. 6, 1906, in Dumont and was married to George "Brick" Walsh on Sept. 18, 1930. They lived in Mason City until 1956 when they relocated to Milwaukee, Wis., returning to Mason City in 1966. In 1986 she moved to Mesa, Ariz. to be near her daughter, Janet Freuler and family.

Pat enjoyed desert living and watching "her" Cubs in spring training and on TV. She became an instant Arizona Diamondbacks fan from their first game and was so thrilled to be able to attend a D 'Backs game last year.

Pat was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church while living in Mason City.

She worked many years at the Mason City Tent & Awning. She also enjoyed gardening and playing bridge.

Surviving is daughter, Janet Freuler; granddaughter, Marijo Swartz and husband, Rick; great-granddaughter, Erin Olson, all of Mesa, Ariz.; great-grandson, Travis Olson, of Milwaukee, Wis.; nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Preceding her in death were her husband, George "Brick" Walsh; granddaughter, Terri Pilacek; son-in-law, Bob Freuler; and brother, Amos Allen.

A memorial service will be planned at a later date in Mason City.

DEWEY E. SOWDER

MASON CITY - Dewey E. Sowder, 79, of Mason City, formerly of Forest City, died Monday (Sept. 24, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at St. James Catholic Church in Forest City, with the Rev. Craig Steimel officiating. Burial will be in St. James Catholic Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City or the Forest City American Legion Post 121.

Dewey E. Sowder was born at Derby, Iowa on Dec. 25, 1921, the son of Ralph and Margaret (Ballard) Sowder. The family came north after a few years, settling in the Hayfield-Britt-Crystal Lake area. Dewey attended the Hayfield Schools - eventually playing on their basketball team. After graduation he went to California to work in a defense plant.

When World War II began he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving as a first lieutenant stationed in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations. He received two Distinguished Flying Crosses and other numerous citations.

Following his discharge from the service in 1945, he returned to Forest City where his family lived. He met and then married Bernadette Noble of Garner on July 28, 1945. The couple made their home in Forest City where Dewey worked as parts manager for Whiteis Auto for over 40 years.

He was a member of American Legion Post 121 in Forest City and a member of St James Catholic Church.

He treasured time spent with his family and had a life-long passion for flying.

He is survived by his wife, Bernadette Sowder, of Mason City; and five children, David Sowder and wife, Kathy, of Vadnais Heights, Minn., Kris Sowder Warner and husband, Jack, of Champlin, Minn., Linda Sowder Quigley and husband, Jim, of Iowa City, John Sowder and wife, Colette, of Forest City, and Mary Sowder Thompson and husband, Mitchell, of Oxford. Also, six grandchildren, Christopher Warner, April Sowder, Eric Sowder, Preston Sowder and Alexandra and James Thompson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Earl and James Sowder; a sister, Evelyn Clark; and a grandson, Derek Gordon Sowder.

MARI LYNNE BURKHOLDER

CLARKSVILLE - Mari Lynne Burkholder, 38, died Sunday (Sept. 23, 2001) at Mercy Hospital, Des Moines, of an aneurysm.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly with Pastor Susen LeBlanc officiating. Burial will be in Poyner Township Cemetery in rural Gilbertville.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, 218 Second St., S.E. Waverly

Mari was born on June 15, 1963, in Waterloo, the daughter of John and Esther (Brocka) Folkerds. She attended and graduated from Janesville High School in 1981. She continued her schooling at the University of Northern Iowa and later graduated from the Business Institute of Technology in Cedar Falls. Mari then went to work for Principal Financial Group in Des Moines.

On Feb. 28, 1987, she was united in marriage to Clint Burkholder at the First United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls. The couple moved to the Janesville area until moving to their present home near Clarksville in 1991. Since 1989 Mari has worked as a contract compliance specialist in the Product Development Department at CUNA Mutual in Waverly.

Mari was currently a member of the National Barrel Horse Association, the Barrel Racing Director for the Iowa Rodeo Association, a member of the Iowa Can Chasers Association and of the Janesville American Legion Post No. 522 Auxiliary.

Mari is survived by her husband, Clint, of Clarksville; two children, Cody and Kenzie at home; her parents, John and Esther Folkerds of Janesville; and a brother, Gary Folkerds of Janesville.

CLEAR LAKE - Donald Peckham Jr., 44, of 704 S. 13th St., Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Sept. 25, 2001) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

JOAN LOUISE LINAHON

CLEAR LAKE - Joan Louise Linahon, 64, Clear Lake, died Monday (Sept. 24, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery in Clear Lake. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

The family suggests memorials to the Joan Linahon Memorial Fund.

Joan was born on Jan. 15, 1937, in Minneapolis, Minn., the daughter of Darrell and Eleanor (Wenger) Hieronymus. Joan graduated from high school in Minneapolis and attended St. Mary's School of Nursing in St. Paul, Minn.

Joan married Patrick N. Linahon on Dec. 5, 1955, at Hampton. After marriage they lived in Minneapolis moving to Clear Lake in 1956. Joan worked at a Mason City bank before they moved to Bondurant, where she drove school bus for two years.

After moving back to Clear Lake she drove school bus for about eight years. In 1991 they owned and operated Clear Lake Appliance until 2000.

Joan liked to bowl, play golf, made ceramics for many years, enjoyed sewing and cooking. Joan and her sisters would send jigsaw puzzles to each other; she also worked crossword puzzles, played games, and was a great movie buff.

Joan is survived by her husband, Patrick N. Linahon; two children, Michael Linahon and his wife, Lisa, of Algona, and Linda Ernster and her husband, Michael, of Clear Lake; two sisters, Gerry Small and her husband, Jacke, of Irvine, Calif.; and Susan Barnhouse and her husband, Charles, of Orange, Calif.; five grandchildren, Emily Ernster, Grace Ernster, Jennifer Linahon, Lauren Linahon, and Katie Linahon; and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents preceded Joan in death.

CAROL JEAN FISCHER

GREENE - Funeral services for Carol Jean Fischer, 82, of Des Moines, formerly of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, with Pastor Ashok Patet officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Carol Jean Fischer was born Nov. 30, 1918, at Sartori Hospital in Cedar Falls, a daughter of Louise Monroe and Althea Lecretia (Eells) Knipe, and died Sunday (Sept. 23, 2001) at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines of complications caused by infection.

She attended and graduated from the New Hartford High School in 1936 and graduated from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1938. She began teaching in Ireton, Iowa, where she remained for two years, before moving to Greene where she taught until 1943.

She was united in marriage to Robert Vernon Fischer on July 3, 1943, at the Presbyterian Church in Norman, Okla. She accompanied her husband where he was stationed stateside during World War II. Following Bob's discharge they made their home in Greene where she raised her four sons, provided for her family through gardening, canning, and cooking. Her family and friends will cherish the memories of the flavors, smells, and warmth from her kitchen.

Carol Jean will be remembered by many who read to the children in the community at Story Time at the Greene Public Library for many years. They moved to Des Moines in 1970 where Bob became Publications Editor for Hyline International Farms.

She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, having been a member in New Hartford, Greene, and currently a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Urbandale. For many years she was a Sunday School teacher and superintendent of the Sunday School. She was also involved in the Church choir and Church circles.

Music played an important part in Carol's life. She faithfully played the piano each day with melodies which included "Sweet Hour of Prayer" and "In an English Country Garden."

Living family members include three sons and their spouses, Daryl and Cheri, of Phoenix, Ariz., Bruce and Sharon, of Naperville, Ill., and David and Pat, of Des Moines; seven grandchildren, Karen, Kristine, Carmen, Ryan, Scott, Susan, and Jenny Fischer; two stepgrandchildren, Brian Kinnan and Tim Kinnan; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas Everett Gertos and Gloria LaVonne Fischer. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Fischer, of Greene, and Eileen Knipe, of Decorah.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert V. on Sept. 28, 1998; son, Richard, on Nov. 28, 1990; and brother, Paul Monroe Knipe.

ALGONA - Earl D. Geesman, 71, of Algona, died Sept. 15, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Central Iowa Health Care Center in Des Moines.

His funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Kossuth County Care Facility in Algona, with Father Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial will be in Burt Township Cemetery in Burt.

GLADYS KETELSEN

OSAGE - Gladys Ivey Olsen Ketelsen, 94, died Monday (Sept. 24, 2001) at Good Smaraitan Center in St. Ansgar.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and will continue one hour before services at the church Friday.

Gladys was born Feb. 7, 1907, on the "Hume" farm one mile south of St. Ansgar, the daughter of Chris and Clara (Anderson) Olsen. She grew up in the St. Ansgar and Carpenter areas and graduated in 1926 from Carpenter High School.

Gladys was united in marriage to Elmer Ketelsen on March 23, 1930, on a Sunday evening at the First Lutheran Church parsonage in St. Ansgar. Gladys and Elmer resided on the "Ketelsen" farm in Burr Oak Township for 35 years, then they moved to the "Olsen" farm southwest of Stacyville to live for 13 years. In 1978 they moved to Osage. Gladys had been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center since 1996.

In her youth, Gladys was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. She acted in numerous plays in high school. She was a very active member of the Burr Oak community, Women's Farm Bureau, sang with the Sweet Adelines and was a member of the Elizabeth Circle at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She enjoyed her family, gardening, sewing, cooking, painting, genealogy and many other hobbies.

Gladys and Elmer were parents to four children, Dixie, Daisie, Dean and Dale.

She is survived by a son, Dale Ketelsen and his wife, Pat, of Baton Rouge, La.; a son-in-law, Laverne Olsen of Osage; a daughter-in-law, Karen Ketelsen of Osage; a sister, Gail Olsen of St. Ansgar; 14 grandchildren, Bill Schroeder of Orchard, Kristy and Nick Ortiz of West Des Moines, David and Rhonda Schroeder of Osage, Deidre and Bernie Badker of Columbus, Ohio, Lon and Laurie Olsen of Kensett, Lance Olsen of Osage, Danell Johnson of Osage, Kurt Ketelsen of Wilmington, N.C., Kymm and Bob Galligan of New Hampton, Kent Ketelsen of Osage, Kyra and Dan Berentsen of Riceville, Craig and Emily Ketelsen of Covington, La., Erik and Bonnie Ketelsen of Atlanta, Ga., and Penny Ketelsen of Nashville, Tenn.; 26 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer; three children, Dixie Schroeder, Daisie Olsen and Dean Ketelsen; a son-in-law, Rudy Schroeder; a granddaughter, Sherie Schroeder; an infant brother, Geral; and two brothers, Glen Olsen and Garman Olsen.

GERALD 'JERRY' PETER

ELMORE, Minn. -Gerald "Jerry" Peter, 80, died Monday (Sept. 24, 2001) at Parker Oaks Assisted Living apartments in Winnebago, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shiloh Lutheran Church in Elmore with Pastor Bob Roettiger officiating. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery, Elmore.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church in Elmore and one hour before the services Saturday.

CLEAR LAKE - Annie Vieve Duesenberg, 88, formerly of Clear Lake, died Monday (Sept. 24, 2001) in Abilene, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, at the Christian Church, 303 Highway 18 West, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Mark Young, officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, and then one hour prior to the service at the church.

Annie Vieve was born Feb. 22, 1913, in Oakwood, Texas. She was the youngest of six children, three sisters and two brothers, of Mac Otis and Leila Irene (Lankster) Johnson. She met her husband Milton H. Duesenberg, a native of Garner, Iowa in Oakwood. Milton was in Texas working on various road construction projects including the one being constructed past Annie Vieve parents' home.

Milton and Annie Vieve were married May 25, 1933, in Shreveport, La., and left immediately for Iowa where Milton worked on road construction. After moving from locality to locality to follow the construction, they settled in Clear Lake in 1939, where Milton joined a family road building firm and Annie Vieve as a homemaker.

Annie Vieve was a lifetime member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Clear Lake. She taught Sunday School (all ages) was active in womens group, sang in the choir, advised youth groups and held district offices. Other activities included Eastern Star, Music Mothers, Progress Club, Republican Women, and as a Girl Scout leader.

Annie Vieve is survived by her son, H. Milton Duesenberg and his wife, Lois, of Clear Lake; two daughters, Beverly Moeller and her husband, Michael, of Sioux City, and Dana Sue Martin, of Aspermont, Texas; eight grandchildren, Linda Stelter and her husband, Daryl, Gail Bridgeland and her husband, John, Dana Jo Duesenberg, Ann Rickord and her husband, Bill, John Moeller; Richard Moeller, Jeffrey Martin, and Roland Martin, 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Annie Vieve was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Milton; granddaughter, Eva Irene Martin; great-grandchild, Joseph David Moeller; three sisters, Myrtle Vannatta, Dana Grayson, and Laurine Dixon; two brothers, Karl Johnson and Lankster Johnson.

PHARR, Texas - Loretta Lillian Rodemeyer, 92, died Sunday (Sept. 23, 2001) in McAllen, Texas. She had been a resident of Mason City before moving to Pharr, Texas.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in McAllen,Texas.

Mrs. Rodemeyer is survived by her daughter, Donna Secory , of Pharr, Texas; one son, Ken (Bernadina) Rodemeyer, of Mason City; daughter-in-law, Stella Rodemeyer, of Pharr, Texas; sister, Mrs. Wayne (Mildred) Oliver, of Des Moines; brother, Milo (Sophia) Roberts, of Belmond; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, in 1963; one son, Dalton in 1997; granddaughter, Patti in 1975; great-grandson, Tim, in 1992; and her brother, Ralph Roberts.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Peggy (Arnold) Lovik, 66, of Minneapolis, Minn. died on Monday (Sept. 24, 2001) in Minneapolis. She was born and raised in Mason City.

She is survived by children, Barb, Tom, and Linda; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; sisters, Kay, Dorothy, Marilyn, Shirley, Jackie, and Mary; and brothers, Pete and Jim.

She was a 30-year employee of Owens Companies, and a 17-year volunteer of Abbott Northwestern Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Boyd and Lucille Arnold.

Services were held today in Minneapolis, Minn.

LELA MAY SLOTER

CORWITH - Funeral services for Lela May Sloter, 86, of Corwith, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith, with Pastor Ron Feuerhak officiating. Interment will be in the Corwith Cemetery in Corwith.

Lela May Sloter was born on Feb. 21, 1915 near Kanawha, Iowa, to Albert and Minnie Brand Jackson. She received her early education in the rural schools between Corwith and Kanawha. Lela graduated from the Corwith High School in 1933.

After her schooling, Lela worked on her parents' farm and for her neighbor, Billy Smith.

On July 18, 1934, Lela was married to William Sloter at Sioux Falls, S.D. The couple lived in Minnesota for a few years, where they worked on the family farm. They moved to the Corwith and Kanawha area, where Lela was a homemaker and Bill worked on a farm.

They spent three years in Yakima, Wash. and worked in the fruit orchard industry. In 1947, Bill and Lela moved back to Corwith, where the couple were self employed in the contract painting business. Lela's husband, Bill, preceded her in death on Feb. 22, 1993.

Lela was an active member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith. She also belonged to the Royal Neighbors of America, and was active in the Corwith Senior Citizens.

Lela enjoyed playing cards, fishing, growing flowers and traveling with her family. She enjoyed visiting with her many friends and sharing many special moments with her family, whom she loved very much. Lela had a great sense of humor that everyone enjoyed.

Lela died on Tuesday (Sept. 25, 2001) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, at the age of 86.

Lela is survived by her three sons, James Sloter and wife, Marsha, of Algona, Julian Sloter and wife, Marlene, of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Donald Sloter, of Omaha, Neb.; and her daughter, Sandra Whitehurst, of Clear Lake. Also surviving are two sisters, Mary Meyer, of Percy, Ill., and Lula Leerar, of Britt.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; one son, Dean Sloter; one grandson, Daniel Sloter; one brother, James Jackson; and three sisters, Caroline Meyer, Gladys Bachman, and Alma Stockwell.

NORA SPRINGS - Barton "Bart" Karl Froning, 56, of Nora Springs, died Tuesday (Sept. 25, 2001) at the Broad lawn Hospital in Des Moines.

His funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, at the St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Ruth Hansen officiating. Burial will be in the Park Cemetery in Nora Springs, with military graveside honors by the H.D.S. American Legion Post #449 in Nora Springs.

The family of Barton "Bart" Karl Froning has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be directed to the family.

Barton "Bart" Karl Froning was born on Nov. 12, 1944, in Mason City, the son of Karl and Ruth (Bonjour) Froning.

He was baptized at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City and attended and received his education in the Mason City School system, graduating from Mason City High School in 1963.

Bart was inducted into the U.S. Marine Corps serving five years in the Corps, and served two tours of duty with the Recon Special Ops in Vietnam.

After his honorable discharge he came back to Mason City and was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Linda Davis, on Feb. 1, 1969, in Mason City.

For 30 years Bart worked as an Iron Worker for the Iron Workers Local #67, working mostly in the state of Iowa. Bart was a very hard worker, and was very proud of his job.

He was also a very devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and also loved camping with his family, and any other activities that involved his family.

He was a member of the Iron Workers Local #67 for 30 years.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Linda Kay Froning, of Nora Springs; his children, Dawn Miller and her husband, Michael, Jamie Froning and his wife, Nicky, and Jason Froning and special friend, Liz Eckhardt, all of Nora Springs; four grandchildren, Chase, Skyler, and Harley Froning and Brianna Miller; his three sisters and a brother, Beverly Arp and her husband, Marvin, of Manly, Georgia Holm and her husband, Darrell, of Mason City, Noreen Thompson, of Clear Lake, and Gene Froning, of Mt. Olivet, Ky.; two aunts and two uncles; several nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and many friends.

Bart was a very special man who had an unbelievable love for his family and friends, and always put them first.

DENNIS RAE FRITZ

TITONKA - Funeral services for Dennis Rae Fritz, 57, of Titonka will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Good Hope Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Jim Berka officiating. Interment will be in Good Hope Lutheran Cemetery.

Dennis Rae Fritz was born on June 7, 1944, at Titonka, son of William and Wilma (Gerdes) Fritz. Dennis was confirmed at Good Hope Lutheran Church and graduated from Titonka High School in 1962.

Dennis moved to California after graduation. He worked at several jobs including picking fruit, McDonald's, working at a dairy farm and his uncle Russell's cabinet shop, and then at his aunt Darlene's lawn mower shop. He returned to Iowa in 1963. He enlisted in the Army serving until 1965 when, due to his father's ill health, he returned to farm the family farm. Dennis worked at Pioneer and the Wesley Elevator while farming.

Dennis met Diane Sue Walker in November of 1965. They were married at Trinity Lutheran Church, Algona, on June 25, 1966. In 1967, they moved to Wisconsin and farmed a dairy farm until 1976 when he returned to Iowa to farm his uncle Herman's farm milking cows for 23 years and then raising hogs and sheep until 1997. He then worked part-time for his brother Don, fixing semi trucks in Britt for six years. Dennis and Diane moved into Titonka in June of 2001.

He loved farming and dearly loved his two daughters and four grandchildren.

Dennis Fritz died Tuesday (Sept. 25, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, in Mason City, at the age of 57, after a long battle with bladder cancer and brain cancer.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Diane, of Titonka; two daughters, Debi Griese, of Everly, and DeAnn Opheim and her husband John, of Burt; four grandchildren, Cale Griese, of Doliver, Skylar Iske, of Everly, and Samantha and Colton Opheim, both of Burt; five brothers and two sisters, Bill Fritz and his wife, Norma, of Carlyle, Ill., Jim Fritz and his wife, Valerie Simon, of McKinleyville, Calif., Don Fritz and his wife, Beverly, of Britt, Virginia Spalding and her husband, Jim, of Houston, Texas, Robert Fritz and his wife, Laurie, of Pipestone, Minn., Richard Fritz, of Wesley, and Linda Bluhm and her husband, Ed, of Burnsville, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

CLEAR LAKE - Donald Keith Peckham Jr., 44, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Sept. 25, 2001) at Winnebago Industries, at work in Forest City.

His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, at the United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave N. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Donnie was born June 4, 1957, in Mason City, the son of Donald Keith and Rosie (Johnson) Peckham. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1975. Donnie first worked at Winnebago for a year. He then worked at the Clear Lake Bakery for 22 years in the Pastry Dept. and the last three years as supervisor. After the bakery closed he went back to Winnebago as a welder.

Donnie was an avid bowler, loved his motorcycle, was a big golfer, and loved boating, skiing and playing pool. He bowled a 700 last Monday night.

He was a kind and caring person who never knew a stranger. He was a member of the Town Pump team in the Monday night Bowling league.

Donnie is survived by his son, Darell Peckham, of Mason City; his parents, Donald K. and Rosie Peckham, of Clear Lake; stepson, Arin Versendaal, of Grinnell; stepdaughter, Allison Davis and her husband, Paul, of Grinnell; three grandchildren, Gordan, Jarregt and Jagger Davis; three sisters, Tyies Andersen and her husband, Ron, and their children, Ally and Ryan, of Mason City; Vickie Greeley and her husband, Ray, and their children, Jenny, Daniel Scott and Brenda, of Clear Lake; and Linda Richardson and her husband, David, and their children, Olivia and Jesse, of Clear Lake; one brother, Ted Peckham and his wife, Lisa, and their children, Dylan and Heather, Fairford, England; and special friend, Susan Becker and her children, Mark and Amanda, of Clear Lake; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

LAKE MILLS - Howard John Carlson, 62, of Lake Mills, died Wednesday (Sept. 26, 2001) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Howard John Carlson, the son of Austin and Katherine (Brecht) Carlson, was born Jan. 15, 1939, in Tracy, Minn. He grew up on a farm near Tracy. He graduated from Tracy High School in 1957 and attended South Dakota State University from 1957 to 1959.

On July 21, 1965, Howard married Lucy Reiter in St. Paul, Minn. They made their home and raised their children in Lake Mills. Howard worked for the Chicago Northwestern and Union Pacific Railroads for 24 years.

It's hard not to smile when remembering Howard. He enjoyed the simple things in life, like going for long car rides with his wife and pushing his granddaughter on the swing.

He couldn't bear watching the Minnesota Vikings lose and was known for making a mean bowl of chili. Having a soft spot for his dogs, Foxie and Jack, Howard always made sure they ate just as well as he did.

A lifelong learner, Howard enjoyed keeping up on current events and could often be seen reading an encyclopedia. Over coffee, Howard spiritedly debated political issues with anyone who could keep up with his sharp wit and quick sense of humor. He will be missed.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy; his son, James Carlson, his wife, Jody and their daughter, Katie, of Chisago City, Minn.; his daughter, Tracey Mason and her husband, Matt, of Cedar Rapids; his brother, Claire Carlson, of Fredericksburg, Va.; his brother, Don Carlson, of Toledo, Ohio; his sister, Ann Bjerk, of Phoenix; and his aunt, Lucille Brecht, of Austin, Minn.

William F. Oertel was born July 29, 1917, in Burlington, the son of Herman and Emma (Dehn) Oertel. He was educated in the Burlington schools and graduated from Iowa State University in 1940. He was a member of the Psi Chi national honorary psychology fraternity and of Alpha Sigma Phi.

Bill married Dorothy Buescher on Aug. 4, 1940, in Burlington. They lived in Greenfield, where he taught industrial arts and coached football.

When war was declared in 1941, Bill enlisted and was sent to Chanute Field in Rantouel, Ill., where he became an instructor at the Army Air Technical Training Command. Bill served as Lieutenant Senior Grade in the U.S. Navy from December 1942-46.

In 1946 he moved to Mason City, where he purchased and operated the Nehi Royal Crown Bottling Co. In 1969 he sold the company to Mid Continent Bottlers. He entered the real estate field, working for Bill Cameron Real Estate Agency and later became an independent appraiser.

Bill was active in Boy Scouts, barbershop chorus & quartet, Ducks Unlimited and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served on various boards as well as teaching Sunday school and adult classes. He was also a member of Rotary, Lions, Mason City Country Club and was an avid fisherman and hunter.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy B. Oertel, of Mason City; two sons, William Oertel and wife, Mary Lynn, of Des Moines, and John Oertel and his wife, Mary, of Mason City; his daughter, Susan Oertel of Decorah; grandchildren, Paul Oertel, of Des Moines, Kara Kruse and her husband, Brian, of Tulsa, Okla., Julia Deets and her husband, Christopher, of Mason City, and Teresa Oertel, of Cedar Falls; great-grandchildren, Cassandra Kruse and Andrew Deets; sister-in-law, Mrs. C.C. Lawton, of Sauk City, Wis.; nieces and nephews, Mrs. Wanda Kimler, of Jacksonville, Ill., Clifford Lawton, of Lodi, Wis., Stephen Buescher ,of Colorado and Karen Fleming, of Valrico, Fla.

FORT DODGE - Otto J. Mueller, 83, of Fort Dodge, died Tuesday (Sept. 25, 2001) at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas.

His funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the Chapel of Laufersweiler-Siever Funeral Home and 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fort Dodge, with Father Chris Van Oosbree officiating at the mass of Christian burial. Burial will be at Corpus Christi Cemetery, with military graveside rites by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1856.

Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. today at the Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home, 307 S. 12th St. in Fort Dodge, with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a vigil for the deceased at 7 p.m.

Otto was born May 4, 1918, in Fort Dodge. He received his education at Corpus Christi Academy and graduated in 1936. Following his education Otto joined the National Guard. Subsequently he served five years in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 136 Medical Regiment, 34th Division, Company B, returning home in June 1945.

Otto married Ann Crouse on June 6, 1946, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Otto spent his life in milk route sales and delivery until his retirement, when he worked as a painter at Friendship Haven. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the American Legion.

Otto is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ann (Crouse) Mueller, his children, Jacquelynn Reinhardt and husband, Eldon, Julie Pannhoff and husband, Gene, Mark Mueller and wife, Pam, and Matthew Mueller, all of Mason City, Timothy Mueller and his wife, Donna, of Salem, Mo., Gail Tracey and husband, Michael, of Mt. Pleasant, Steven Mueller and wife, Annie, of Columbus, Neb., Carol Ocenasek and husband, Larry, and Mary Kay Sharkey and husband, Pat, both of Fort Dodge; 21 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Paula Brokaw; and a brother, Leo Mueller, of Fort Dodge.

Forest V. Lewis was born in Forest City, on March 16, 1911, the son of Joseph and Mary (Segerstrom) Lewis. He received his education in rural school and graduated from Forest City High School and Waldorf College.

He married Gladys Moline on Sept. 7, 1938 at her parent's home in Arthur, Iowa. The couple made their home in Mt. Valley Township near Forest City where they farmed for many years.

Forest was a progressive man, always ready to try something new. He was a "Flying Farmer" for a time, owning and operating several planes.

He was an active member of First Baptist Church in Forest City, serving in many capacities and on several church boards over the years. He retired from farming in 1988 and he and Gladys moved to Forest City.

He enjoyed golfing in his retirement years and was an excellent softball pitcher. He was a strong Bethel College supporter, liked to sing and appreciated music.

His children will always remember his guiding example of Christian living.

Forest is survived by four children and their spouses, Judy Carlsen and husband, Bob, of New Brighton, Minn., Vernon Lewis and wife, Kathy, of Austin, Minn., Joel Lewis and wife, Kathy, of Hovland, Minn., and Cherry Dewey and husband, Don, of Chanhassen, Minn. Also, 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elsie Olson, of Emigrant, Mont., and Luella Swanson, of Forest City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen was a lifelong homemaker while Alfred worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. The couple lived on 28th Street SW in Mason City for over 40 years.

In February 1986, Helen became a resident of the IOOF Home. She became very involved in the various "fun time" activities offered by the activity directors. Helen enjoyed living there and had lots of friends.

Helen is survived by four sisters-in-law, Velma Van Horn, of Mason City, Violet Kuhlmeir, of Nora Springs, and Pearl and Ruth Fisher, both of Mason City, and several nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death her parents and her husband, Alfred, in 1981.

Erwin Henry Greiman, son of Henry and Clara Greiman, was born January 5, 1919 in rural Garner, Iowa. Erwin farmed with his father, on a farm west of the Peace Reformed Church.

He was confirmed and a member of the Peace Reformed Church. Erwin attended Klemme schools.

Erwin had been a resident of both Duncan Heights and Concord Care Centers for the past 40 years due to a logging accident.

He was an avid reader and enjoyed playing bingo, attending church services and various other activities at the care center. He enjoyed chocolate and spending time watching TV and visiting with Eddie, his roommate.

He always enjoyed when family came to visit and also visiting with residents of the care center.

Those thankful for sharing in his life are; sister, Corrine and husband, William Davey, Gadsden, Alabama; and Rick and wife, Joyce Merkel, Gadsen, Alabama; Sharilyn and husband, James Forcht; Eileen and husband, Jim Ownes, Antioch, Calif.; Patricia and husband, Dan Henry, Overland Park, Kansas and Elisa Forcht, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Iola C. Wells was born April 22, 1910, in Goodell, the daughter of Fred R. and Elva B (Lange) Chase. She graduated from Garner High School in 1927and moved to Mason City in 1928.

Iola married Lon A. Wells on Aug. 2, 1937, in Mason City. Iola worked for Roshecks Department Store in Dubuque for 18 years and was a department store buyer for Younkers for many years retiring in 1970. Following her retirement, she went to work as a secretary at the Iowa Odd Fellows office in Des Moines.

Iola was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, a 42-year member of Queen Rebekah Lodge, Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and RSVP. She enjoyed bowling golf and traveling.

Iola is survived by one sister, Nettie A. Delahoyde of Clear Lake; a brother, Jess A. Chase and his wife, Helen, of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

ALVIN J. AMUNDSON

OSAGE - Alvin J. Amundson, 89, died Saturday (Sept. 29, 2001) at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Alvin was born Sept. 9, 1912, in Mitchell County, the son of Adolph and Gustava "Gustie" (Erickson) Amundson. He attended Meroa County School and worked at home and for neighbors.

Alvin was united in marriage to Charlotte Hennings on Feb. 6, 1935. They farmed southwest of Osage for 17 years. In 1952 they moved to Monette, Mo., where he operated a business.

Alvin returned to Osage in the fall of 1959 and drove truck for L. R. Falk Construction retiring in 1979.

After retiring he enjoyed camping and fishing. He was a member of Rock Creek Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte of Osage; two daughters, Edna Norby and her husband, Marvin, of rural Osage, and Mary Lugg and her husband, Keith, of Casper, Wyo.; a sister, Alice Nack of Osage; a brother, Vernon Amundson of Osage; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

BRITT - Hazel Belknap, 86, of Mason City, passed away Saturday, (Sept. 29, 2001) at Heritage Health Care Center in Mason City.

Hazel, the daughter of Walter and Ida Marth Dolphin, was born April 12, 1915, in Britt. She grew up in Britt and graduated from Britt High School in 1934.

She was united in marriage with Clarence Cline. The couple made their home in Mason City. To this union two children were born. She was united in marriage with Wayne Hamilton in June of 1951. Wayne passed away in 1952. Hazel then married Everett Belknap in 1958 in Waterloo. Everett passed away in 1967.

In 1986, Hazel moved from Waterloo to her home in Mason City, where she resided until becoming a resident of Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

Hazel is survived by her son, Kenny Cline and his special friend, Carole Taylor, of Mason City; four grandchildren, Mark Arges of Owatonna, Minn., Dana Jons of Germany, Tami Jesudass of Tulsa, Okla., and Tony Cline of Fort Smith, Ark.; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Velma Bird of Britt; three sisters-in-law, Ann Dolphin of Kansas City, Kan., and Jean Dolphin of San Jose, Calif., and Evelyn Dolphin of Polson, Mont.
