FRANK D. CURTIS

MASON CITY - Frank D. Curtis, formerly of Mason City, Iowa, joined family and friends in eternal peace on the evening of Aug. 30, 2001 shortly after having been attended to by his grandson, John Carlson, at his daughter's home in the rural farm community of Oaksdale, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lea and Nellie Curtis; his sister, Mildred Crow; grandson, Christopher D. Carlson; son-in-law, Joe Carlson; and two wonderful women who shared his life, Irene Moon, whom he married in 1932 and who passed away in 1963, and Dorothy Childers whom he married in 1972 and who passed away in 1997.

He is survived by his brother, Carl Curtis, of Bluff City and Wichita, Kan.; his sister, Maurine Slagell, of Anthony, Kan.; his daughter, Jackie Riggs, of Oakesdale, Wash. and whom he lived with the last two years of his life; two granddaughters, two grandson, two great-granddaughters, and six great-grandsons. He also had many in-laws on Dorothy's side of the family. Among those many he was close to, Judy Barron, of Aberdeen, S.D., Danny Barron, of LaHabra, Calif., Jo Brown, of Des Moines, Chris Holloran, of Mason City, Jack Billick and many of the stepgrand kids.

Frank had no sons, but Frank Curtis' good name will live on with the families of Deb and Mike Leslie and their kids, Patrick, Erica, and Jonathon Craig, John Carlson and Peggy McDonald and their kids, Kjel and Ian, and Tina and Andy Knapp and their kids, Adam, Joey, and Jackie. Were it not for Frank, they (we) would not be here on this Earth.

Frank worked many years for the Lehigh Cement Co., the Carnation-Hermanson Co. and after retiring in the school district in Mason City. He still has many friends and relatives in the Mason City area. The picture that accompanies this article is from a flyer the Carnation Co. made honoring him as Salesman of the Year for 1959. He was proud of this award and this is a good picture of him during good times. He would like it that we used it this way.

The story of his life would make an interesting book. But in the end it would be summarized thus:

Frank was born on Jan. 23, 1911 in Attica, Kan. He had no birth certificate; he was not expected to live. He died at the age of 90 years, seven months and seven days, not too bad for someone not expected to make it past a week.

Frank lived a long and good life. He was well liked by those who knew him. Those who were a part of his life loved him. He was hardworking, kind, honest and honorable. He will be dearly missed until we meet again.

There will be no memorial services as Frank wanted it that way. Memorials or flowers ... Frank would say save your money. If you feel compelled, a small donation to Boys Town in his name would be a good way to celebrate the life of this nice man.
