OSCAR W. GABEL

ROCKFORD - Oscar W. Gabel, 90, of rural Rockford, died Sunday (June 3, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville, rural Marble Rock. Monsignor Walter V. Brunkan, pastor of St. Mary's, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. A rosary service will begin at 3 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before the Mass at St. Mary's School Parish Hall Wednesday.

Oscar William Gabel was born Nov. 1, 1910, in Ulster Township, Floyd County, the son of Frederick Michael and Margaret Levine (Noss) Gabel. He received his education in rural Floyd County schools and St. Mary's Catholic School of Roseville.

On June 7, 1933, Oscar was united in marriage to Dorothy Marie Slinger.

Mr. Gabel operated a Phillips 66 gas station on Gilbert Street in Charles City, where he lived for three years. He moved to a farm south of Charles City and lived there for three years before moving to the farm at which he resided for the past 62 years.

Oscar was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville, where he was an anonymous donor for many of St. Mary's projects. He often lent his talents and labor to beautify the church, cemetery grounds and facilities. He was a member of the Floyd County Farm Bureau and a former member of the Floyd County Board of Review.

Farming was Oscar's life; he enjoyed his hard-working farm life with his wife of 61 and a half years, Dorothy, assisting him. The raising of livestock, hogs and his prized Hereford cattle brought much enjoyment to him. He took pride in making his farmsteads look beautiful. He was honored with the Century Farm Plaque in 1976.

Oscar enjoyed woodworking, working in his shop and building and maintaining buildings. He also enjoyed his church, his collie dog, "Lady," bird watching, growing and caring for trees, playing "500" card games, automobiles and going for drives. He liked going to McAllen, Texas, for several weeks in the winter.

Oscar was a courageous man who, when called upon, helped out in any manner he could. He enjoyed the time he spent with his children, grandchildren, extended family and many friends.

Those thankful for being a part of Oscar's life include two daughters and their husbands, Doris E. and Jim Murray of Charles City and Gila J. and Ronald Jorgensen of Rockford; two sons, Gerald F. Gabel of Rockford and John B Gabel and his wife, Patrice, of Brookings, S.D.; nine grandchildren, Michael Murray of Pukalani, Maui, Hawaii, Joanne O'Reilly of Iowa Falls, Sandra Haller of Loveland, Colo., Lori Mehmen of Orchard, Kathleen Smith of Rockford, Teresa Pettit of Floyd, James Jorgensen of Charles City, Christopher Gable of Reddick, Fla., and Elizabeth Wagner of McHenry, Ill; 15 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandchild; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Duncan of Charles City; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy, who died March 9, 1995; and four brothers, Edgar, Wilbur and Harvey Gabel and Carl Gabel in infancy.

TRUDIE B. STEINBERG

MASON CITY - Trudie B. Steinberg, 83, of 1037 19th St. S.W., died Monday (June 4, 2001) at the IOOF Home.

There will be no services and no visitation at this time. Her body has been cremated.

Trudie B. Steinberg was born March 2, 1918, in Dustin, Okla., to Agnus and Clara Guest. She married William C. Henry on Oct. 17, 1941. They lived for many years in Cedar Rapids, where he died in 1969. Trudie moved back to Oklahoma, where she later remarried and divorced. In 1995, she came to Mason City to be near her daughter.

She is survived by her daughters, Alice (Mrs. Wayne) Erland, Mason City and Brinda (Mrs. James) Caldwell, of Coralville; a brother, Edsel Guest, of Norman, Okla.; a sister, Geraldine Voyles, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and two grandchildren, Jamie and Molly Caldwell, of Coralville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, two brothers, and a grandson, Jeff Erland.

ALGONA - Richard William Owens, 70, of 520 South Blackford St., No. 113, Algona, died Monday (June 4, 2001) at the Algona Good Samaritan Center.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.

VENTURA - Jack Lee Harthan, 68, 103 W. Ventura St., died Monday (June 4, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating.

JOANN (MRS. WAYNE) MILES

CHARLES CITY - JoAnn (Mrs. Wayne) Miles, 67, of 806 Tenth St., died Tuesday (June 5, 2001) at her home in Charles City.

The funeral for JoAnn Miles will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Messiah Lutheran Church, Charles City, with the Rev. Curt Schneider officiating. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens, south of Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour before the service on Friday.

JoAnn Joyce Miles was born Feb. 26, 1934, in Hamilton County, the daughter of Thomas and Marie (Brown) Peterson. She was educated in the rural system in Rose Grove No. 9, Ellsworth Elementary and graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1951. She attended Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) from the fall of 1951 through the fall of 1953.

On Jan. 31, 1954, she was united in marriage to Wayne H. Miles at Trinity Lutheran Church, Ellsworth. While living there, she was a telephone operator and bookkeeper for the telephone company, president of the PTA, president of the Deb-Hart Club, a Sunday school teacher and was active in scouting. She was president of the American Legion Auxiliary unit (Ellsworth); county (Hamilton) and 8th district (14 counties in North Central Iowa).

On Dec. 1, 1970, the family moved to Charles City, to what would later be 1819 Timber Ave. to raise turkeys. JoAnn became involved in many community activities: Sunday school teacher, president of Charles City Woman's Club, president of Double Dozen Club and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She was very active in the Floyd County Democratic Party, serving as chair from 1976 to 1982. She continued her work in the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as unit (Charles City) county (Floyd) and 4th District (12 counties in northeast Iowa) president. After serving in many Department (State of Iowa) appointments, JoAnn was elected Department President for the '97-'98 year. She was a life member of the Floyd County Historical Society and was an avid basketball fan, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Boston Celtics.

Living family members include her husband, Wayne, of Charles City; their three children and families, Joyce and Tom Hopfensperger and son, Allan, of Cedar Rapids; David Miles and Loree, of Des Moines; and John Miles and Linda and their daughter Ahafia, and son, Kestrel, of Kansas City, Mo.; three step-grandsons and one step-granddaughter; a brother, Clifford Peterson, of Des Moines; a sister, Darlene Levey, of Des Moines and Kihea, Maui, Hawaii; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Norman and David Lee; and one sister, Thora.

RICHARD NORSTRUD JR.

BRITT - Richard Norstrud Jr., 58, of Britt, died Tuesday (June 5, 2001) at his home in Britt.

His funeral will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Forest City, with the Rev. Bill Robertson and the Rev. Greg Wirtjes officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

FRED 'BUZZ' GANZ

LITTLE CANADA, MINN. - Fred "Buzz" Ganz, 60, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, unexpectedly at his home in Little Canada, Minn.

A memorial service was held June 2 at Coon Rapids Christian Church, Coon Rapids, Minn. A private graveside service will be held July 7, 2001, at Grandview Memorial Gardens, Rochester, Minn.

Fred was born July 7, 1940, in Eyota, Minn., the son of Fred and Margery (Predmore) Ganz. He was a 1958 graduate of Rochester High School, Rochester, Minn., and a graduate of Dunwoody Institute, Minneapolis, Minn. He was employed by Tetra-Pak in Minneapolis for 33 years as a draftsman and purchasing agent.

Fred is survived by his daughters, Teri Morse and her husband, Todd, of Moorhead, Minn., and Lori Alamo and her husband, Jose, of Coon Rapids, Minn.; and grandchildren, Brian, Emily and Michael Morse, and Katie and Madeline Alamo; his parents, Fred and Margery Ganz, of Little Canada, Minn., two brothers, Dennis Ganz and his wife, Sharon, of Fertile, Bob Ganz and his wife, Diane, of Phoenix, Ariz.; three sisters, Gwen Riggin and her husband, Don, of Milbank, S.D., Kathy Termeer and her husband, Hank, of Powell, Ohio, and Joyce Krystofiak and her husband, Joe, of Shoreview, Minn.

DURANT, OKLA. - Lowell Dale 'Pete' Petersen, 68, of Durant, Okla., formerly of Mason City and Fort Dodge, died Sunday (June 3, 2001) at his home in Durant.

WODEN - Bruce K. Hanna, 67, of Woden, died Tuesday (June 5, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

ROBIN L. CLEM

MASON CITY - Robin L. Clem, 42, of 202 Thirteenth St. N.E., died Sunday (June 3, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

The funeral and visitation were held Tuesday (June 5, 2001) at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Alan Sheldon of the Church of Christ officiating.

On Feb. 3, 1959, Robin was born to Charles and Lorraine (Jones) Arhart. After receiving her GED, she continued her education and graduated as a LPN. For the next several years, she worked in the Klemme Care Center as a LPN.

On Oct. 30, 1987, Robin Arhart was united in marriage to Richard Ray Clem. They made their home in Mason City. Robin enjoyed cooking her favorite dishes for family and church functions. Her favorite recipes were lasagna and taco lasagna. If she wasn't cooking, she could be found watching "Judge Judy" or taking care of her parakeets, parrots and lovebirds. Garage sales were an activity that Robin and friend Lila Paulsen did together.

Those who will treasure her memories are her husband, Richard Ray Clem, of Mason City; two children, Bridget and William Clem; three sisters, Sarah Lilly of Bossier, La.., Rhonda Feeney of Lubbock, Texas, and Eleanaor Bubblitz of Austin, Minn.; mother, Lorraine Arhart, of Bossier City, La.; two brothers, Charles Arhart of Bossier City, La., and Fred Arhart of Washington State; a grandmother, Mary Shreckengost; a very close friend and caretaker, Lila Paulsen, of Mason City; and many friends, nieces and nephews.

Robin was preceded in death by her father, Charles, and one grandmother.

ERNEST KOLWINSKA, JR.

GARLAND, TEXAS - Ernest Kolwinska, Jr., formerly of Kensett, died Friday (June 1, 2001) at Baylor Hospital in Garland, Texas, after a lengthy illness.

Ernest Kolwinska was born Mar. 26, 1927, in Des Moines, to Blanche E. (Comstock) Kolwinska and Ernest L. Kolwinska, both of Mason City. He attended Mason City schools through the eighth grade, after which he was employed by Jacob E. Decker and sons meat packing plant for the next 40 years.

He married Geraldine D. Blanchard of Mason City in 1949. Together they had four children, and shared 52 wonderful years of marriage and family life. In 1975, he and his wife transferred with Armour and Company to Garland, Texas. He continued to work until his retirement in 1983. He and Geraldine enjoyed traveling to see family during his retirement. They resided at their home in Garland until his death.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine, of Garland, Texas; his son, Jerry and wife, Marcele Kolwinska, of Watertown, Wis.; daughter, Susan Frazier and husband, Michael Frazier, of Arlington, Texas, daughter, Laurie Olsen and husband, Lon Olsen, of Manly, and daughter, Lynn Sheppard and husband, Ken Sheppard, of Rockwall, Texas; grandchildren include Jeremy and Joan Kolwinska of Apple Valley, Minn., Levi Kolwinska and soon-to-be wife, Shelly Judge, of Watertown, Wis., Jessica Kolwinska of Watertown, Wis., Matthew and Trisha Shields, of Belton, Mo., Heather and Andrew Vickers, of Fredericksburg, Patricia Frazier and Erika Frazier, of Arlington, Texas, and Nicole Alman and Ashley Alman, of Rockwall, Texas; his sister, Merlemae Hugi, resides in Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by both his parents; a half brother, Donald Brue; and son-in-law, Jon Shields.

Ernest was a wonderful husband and a devoted father and grandfather. He was loved dearly and will be missed greatly.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Williams Funeral Home in Garland, Texas, for family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett, with inurnment following the service at the Kensett cemetery.

DONALD PAUL HENSEL

ALEXANDER - Donald Paul Hensel, 78, died Tuesday (June 5, 2001).

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immanuel United Church of Christ with the Rev. Jeff Long officiating. Interment will be in Alexander Cemetery with military rites at graveside.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Tenold Funeral Home and one hour prior to the services at the church.

Donald Paul Hensel, the son of Oscar W. and Marie E. (Arends) Hensel, was born Sept. 15, 1921, at Alexander.

He attended and graduated from the Alexander High School. He entered the U. S. Army during World War II and served from 1942 until 1946, including a campaign in northern France at Normandy Beach.

He was united in marriage to Mabryn "Connie" Schaefer at Lake Park on Apri1 21, 1946. They made their home in Oelwein, where Don owned and operated a service station.

In 1948 they moved to Alexander, where they purchased a grocery store. He and his two brothers started an egg, produce and trucking company. Later he became active in farming, but continued to operate the trucking company.

Don loved to spend time at the family cabin on Ten Mile Lake, Minn., and enjoyed fishing, boating and spending time there with his family and friends.

He was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer, where he served as deacon and elder.

Don died suddenly at his home in Alexander on Tuesday, June 5, 2001.

Those thankful for sharing his life are his sons, Paul Hensel and his wife, Diane, of Alexander, and Mark Hensel and his wife, Marci, of Monticello, Wis,; grandchildren, Andy, Christie, Lindsey and Allison Hensel; and a brother, Carroll Hensel of Stockton, Ill.

JACK LEE HARTHAN

VENTURA - Jack Lee Harthan, 68, 103 W. Ventura St.,Ventura, died Monday (June 4, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Jack was born Dec. 7, 1932 in Ventura. He was the son of Leland and Evelyn (Miller) Harthan. He attended Ventura schools and graduated from Thornton High School in 1951. After graduation, Jack helped his parents farm until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in January 1953. He served in E Company12th Infantry Regiment, and was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany) and National Defense Service Medal.

Jack married Lorene Nicolet on June 27, 1953, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Thornton. After leaving the service, Jack and Lorene farmed several years north of Swaledale. In February 1964 they moved to Clear Lake and he worked for the Farmers Co-op in Mason City. Jack worked for Land O' Lakes as a truck driver from 1969 to 1992, when he retired.

Jack was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, where he was very active in his early years. He loved to travel and go to Texas, loved to read and use the computer, enjoyed all the time he could spend with his family, and he enjoyed spending time with his D.O.M. buddies at McDonalds.

Jack is survived by four sons, Tim Harthan and his wife, Cindy, Emmetsburg, Mark Harthan and his wife, Karen, Clear Lake, Matt Harthan and his wife, Deb, Ventura, and Paul Harthan and his wife, Jeanette, Garner; seven grandsons Aaron and Jesse Harthan, Emmetsburg, Ben and Jacob Harthan, Clear Lake, Brandon Harthan, Ventura, and John and Luke Harthan, Garner; two sisters Joan Collins and her husband, Duane, Clear Lake and Janice Harthan-Kerdus and her husband, Bob, Clear Lake; one brother Jerry Harthan and his wife, Carmella, Clear Lake; a special friend, Joan Strong, Goodrich, Texas, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lorene, and one infant son, David.

IVEN RICHARD (RICH) NORSTRUD, JR.

BRITT - Richard Norstrud, 58, of 165 Center St. E., Britt, passed away from cancer, at home surrounded by his family, Tuesday (June 5, 2001.)

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 9, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 18508 Highway 9, Forest City, with the Rev. Bill Robertson and the Rev. Pastor Greg Wirtjes officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday (June 8, 2001) at the Ewing Funeral Home, 178 Center St. W., Britt.

Richard was born July 18, 1942, in Little Rock, Ark., the son of Iven and Florence (Krambeer) Norstrud. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith Sept. 13, 1942.

Richard was a member of the Boy Scouts and earned his Eagle Scout badge. He graduated from Britt High School in 1960. After graduation he was employed by Britt Tech Corporation for eight years. He graduated from Iowa State University in Ames with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1971. He was then employed by the Engineering Department of Northwestern Telephone Labs in Chicago, Ill. In 1972 Richard returned to Britt where he has managed his father's business, NORCO Manufacturing Inc.

Richard was united in marriage to Karen (Beane) on Dec. 12, 1975, and adopted her three children. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior and was a member of the First Baptist Church, Forest City.

Richard was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed his church, training and showing Velvet, his Labrador retriever, camping, and fishing.

Richard is survived by his wife, Karen, of Britt; daughters Tamara and husband, Randy Oettchen, and their children, Emily and Brandon of Gladbrook, Debra and husband, David Eickholt, and their children, Adam and Richard of Maxwell, Laura and husband, Thomas Minehart, of Albert Lea, Minn. and their four children, Jesse and his wife, Serena, and their son, Carter, of Nevada, Joshua of Glenville, Minn., Danielle and Nicole of Albert Lea, Minn.; Cheryl Olson and her sons, Casey and Justin of Corwith, and Davin Norstrud, and his children, Hailey and Shawn, of Britt. Richard is also survived by his parents, Iven and Florence Norstrud of Britt; a sister, Pernola Jean Hochhaus, of Grapevine, Texas; and a brother, Terry Norstrud, of Fernandina Beach, Fla.

GOODELL - Florence Marie (Mason) Veldhouse, 86, died Wednesday (June 6, 2001) at Belmond Health Care Center.

Florence Marie (Mason) Veldhouse, the daughter of Walt and Madge (Robbins) Mason was born Jan. 24, 1915, in Hancock County, Goodell.

She attended and graduated from the Goodell High School and taught school in rural Twin Lakes Township.

Florence was united in marriage to Paul Veldhouse in May of 1936, and they celebrated 65 years of marriage on the day her husband died, May 28, 2001. Paul and Florence built a new home in Goodell in 1947 and continued to live there until they entered the Belmond Health Care Center. They also built a cabin in Clear Lake, where they lived for a time.

They loved to travel and pull their camper trailer and what was very important was spending time with her daughter and granddaughters.

She was a member of the Goodell United Methodist Church where she played the piano for many years and was a member of the Ladies Aid.

Florence had a diary she kept every day and baking a banana cream pie was her specialty.

Those thankful for sharing her life are her son-in-law, Bob Stille of Britt; granddaughters, Laurie S. Anderson and her husband, Doug, of Nevada, Linda S. Skogerboe of Goodell and her fiancé, Craig Meints, Lisa S. Barillas and her husband, Chris, of Clear Lake; and great-grandchildren, Brittany and Aaron Anderson, Anna and Amy Skogerboe, Nicholas and Rachel Barillas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul, on May 28, 2001; daughter, Virginia Stille; brother, Francis; and a sister, Louise.

OSAGE - Bette Helen Teall, 78, passed away Sunday (June 3, 2001) from heart failure, in Vencor Hospital, Ontario, Calif.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Champion-Burcheit Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, with the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Bette was born in Northwood, the daughter of Thomas and Ida (Beyer) Teall. She attended high school in Northwood and graduated from the University of Iowa.

She taught in Iowa and Florida before moving to California. She was employed by the San Bernadino City Unified School District as a teacher and counselor for 32 years.

Bette was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in San Bernadino, the University of Iowa Alumni Association, the California Retired Teachers' Association and the San Bernadino-Riverside County Counselors' Association. She was very active in environmental and animal issues and was a member of several related organizations.

Bette is survived by a sister, Mary Goad of Cloquet, Minn.; nieces, Martha Briggs Curcio of Sugar Grove, Ill, Mary McWilliams of Cedar Rapids, Vicki Olson of Indianola, Spring Rosen of Sanibel Island, Fla., and Leslie Hill of Ocala, Fla.; a nephew, Paul McWilliams of Loveland, Colo.; a brother-in-law, Harold McWilliams of Osage; and many loving friends.

Florence Elizabeth Sabelka Shileny was born Dec. 17, 1914, at her parent's home northwest of Lawler, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Adank) Sabelka. She received her formal education in the rural school near her home. On June 23, 1936, she and Emil W. Shileny were married at Riley Ridge Catholic Church northwest of Lawler.

Florence was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Francis Circle and the Charles City Senior Citizens. She enjoyed having breakfast at McDonald's or Hardees with family and friends.

Living family members include two daughters and their husbands, Rose and her husband, Mark Frein, of Charles City, and Madonna and her husband, Rollin Whitehurst, of Mason City; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Her parents, husband in 1986, a brother and two sisters preceded her in death.

Lila Ferne Carpenter was born Oct. 13, 1903, the daughter of Brutus Tudor and Anna Mae (Montgomery) Tudor, at New Canton, Ill. Lila lived most of her life in Wright County, Iowa.

On Dec. 20, 1958, she married Joseph Howard Carpenter in Webster City. Two children were born to this union. Howard and Lila farmed in Wright County until Howard's death in 1958.

Lila was an active member of the Church of Christ in Webster City and Clarion, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Plantaganet Society, the Hugenot Society, the Webster City Women's Club and the League of Women Voters. She moved to Webster City in 1970.

She is survived by her daughter, Betty Hill and her husband, Lowell, of Urbana, Ill., a daughter, Bonnie Cook of Rowan; a sister, Anna Mae Hansen of Manchester; a brother, Woodrow Tudor of Arlington, Texas; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

DURANT, Okla.- Lowell D. "Pete" Petersen, 68, formerly of Mason City and the Fort Dodge area, passed away Sunday (June 3, 2001) at his home in Durant.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Amsterdam Cemetery in Goodell, with graveside military rites conducted by the Belmond Honor Guard.

Lowell, the son of Clarence and Inez Oleson Petersen, was born on Feb. 21, 1933, in Hollandale, Minn. He went to grade school in Hollandale and LeRoy, Minn. After moving to Iowa, he attended and graduated from CAL-Latimer High School.

Lowell served in the United States Army. He was stationed in Europe where he worked as a cook.

After the war he returned to Mason City where he worked in construction as a union carpenter.

Lowell was united in marriage to Thelma Alm in 1974 in Colorado. The couple later moved to Oklahoma in the 1980s. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and collecting coins.

Lowell is survived by his four sisters, Darlene Huebner of Anthony, Fla., Lucille Lauden and her husband, Ole, of Thornton, Janet Roderick of Fort Dodge, and Carole Molencamp and her husband, Ron, of Des Moines; and 18 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Thelma in 1997; and one brother.

WODEN -Bruce K. Hanna, 67, died Tuesday (June 5, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Bruce Kay Hanna, the son of Gilman and Anna (Schauf) Hanna, was born Jan. 23, 1934, on a farm east of Woden. He was baptized and confirmed at Grant Lutheran Church. He attended country school and Woden High School, graduating in 1951.

On April 14, 1955, he married Doryce E. Sorenson at the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake. They lived in Laytonville, Md., where Bruce served his country in the Army at a Nike Missile Site outside of Washington, D.C.

In 1957 they returned to the Woden area where they farmed and raised their family. Bruce and Doryce moved from the farm to their home in Woden in 1991.

Bruce enjoyed his family, farming, traveling, woodworking, fishing and his winters in Mission, Texas, with friends.

He was a lifetime member of Grant Lutheran Church where he served on the church board. He also served on the Crystal Lake Creamery Board, Woden Elevator Board and was a member of the Woden American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Doryce, of Woden; three daughters, Lori Hanna, of Seattle, Wash., Tammy Johnson and her husband, Scott, and their two sons, Ryan and Justin, of Britt, and Lisa Swingen and her husband, Doug, and their two children, Megan and Matthew, of Woden; one sister, Betty Buns and her husband, Kenneth, of Woden; a brother-in-law, Clarence Watson, of Britt; and many nieces and nephews.

Bruce was preceded in death by his daughter, Tresa, May 1, 1964; his parents; and a sister, Marjorie Watson.

Alpha was born Nov. 23, 1909, in Fertile, the daughter of Peter John and Trena (Daley) Ouverson. She was baptized and confirmed at the Fertile Lutheran Church. She graduated from Fertile High School in 1927 and from the school of nursing in Graceville, Minn., in 1929.

Alpha was united in marriage to Lawrence W. "Larry" Ritter on April 29, 1929, in Chokio, Minn., where they farmed for a few years before moving to a farm near Fertile in 1934. In 1954, the couple began operating a nursing home for the elderly, the Lake Rest Home, in Clear Lake. In 1965, Alpha and Larry, along with their son Roger and his wife, Marilyn, constructed a new nursing care center, Ritter's Oakwood Manor, in Clear Lake, which was sold in 1973 to the current owners.

Following their retirement in 1969, Alpha and Larry spent their winters in Fort Myers Beach, Fla., Larry passed away in 1979 and Alpha married James Markell in May 1982.

She was a member of the Lioness, TTT Society, Zion Lutheran Church and Zion Liberty Circle, all in Clear Lake. Alpha entered the I.O.O. F. Care Center on Jan. 30, 1998, where she was a resident until entering Hospice of North Iowa on June 5, 2001.

Alpha will be greatly missed by her son and his wife, Roger and Marilyn Ritter of Clear Lake; her daughter and her husband, Janice and Larry Kitchen, of Fort Myers Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren, Debra Winchester and her husband, Paul, of Bedford, N.H., Jeffrey Kitchen and his wife, Kristi, of Fountain Hills, Ariz., John Ritter and his wife, Sherri, of Rochester, Minn., Sue Secory and her husband, Jon, Matthew Ritter and his wife, Renee, all of Clear Lake, and Jennifer Mellman and her husband, Monty, of Chicago; eight great-grandchildren, Adam Secory, Allison Secory, Andrew Secory, Sara Ritter, Rebecca Ritter, Jarod Mellman, Matthew Winchester and Anna Winchester; and one sister, Mildred Meldow of Hamptonville, N.C.

Luella married Harry C. Dolter June 3, 1930, in Mason City. She worked for S.S. Kresge Co. for 11 years and in concessions at North Iowa Area Community College for many years.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the Queen Rebekah Lodge.

Luella is survived by two grandsons and one granddaughter, Michael Dolter and his wife, Cathie, of Albuquerque, N.M., Jeannette Wilson and her husband, James, of Spokane, Wash., and Erich Dolter and his wife, Debbie, of Albuquerque, N.M.; three great-grandchildren, Tyler and Hannah Wilson and Mandy Rose; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Dolter of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

Kathryn P. Mullan was born on June 17, 1909, the daughter of Charles and Anna (Chute) Mullan in Mason City. She received her education in the St. Joseph Catholic Schools, graduating from St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1927.

Kathryn was employed by Farmers Opticians in Mason City as a receptionist and optical technician for more than 20 years until her retirement.

Kathryn was a life-long resident of Mason City and was a Girl Scout leader for more than 50 years in the St. Joseph schools, where she started the program. She was also an avid booster club member and sports enthusiast for Newman High School and also enjoyed making crafts.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the church circle in Mason City.

Left to cherish her memory are nine nieces and nephews, 25 great-nieces and nephews, 28 great-great-nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Dolores Leona Alberta Ridder, the eldest daughter of Albert and Lillie (Lau) Koerner was born July 21, 1905 in Klemme, Iowa. She attended school in Klemme and graduated with the first class to graduate from Klemme High School in 1924.

She was a telephone operator for her father, with the switchboard located in their home.

She was united in marriage to Levi Ridder on June 14, 1928 in Mason City, Iowa. They lived in Manly, where they operated a billiard parlor and came to Klemme in 1930, and operated a billiard parlor and tavern. Dolores was well known for her baking, quilting and gave her family unconditional love.

She and Levi traveled to Germany in 1958 and World's Fair in Brussels, Belgium and the 1934 Worlds Fair in Chicago. She also traveled many places after Levi's death.

She was an avid sports fan, being a strong supporter of the Klemme Shamrocks and the Iowa Hawkeyes. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and church circles in Klemme.

After her health failed, she entered the Westview Care Center in Britt, where she died on Thursday (June 7, 2001).

Dolores had a very special relationship with her twin granddaughters, Marilyn and Marian. From the times they would stay at "grandma's" house as children, to the many times they shared with her as adults. They never missed a birthday or Christmas with her, with many visits in between. Dolores was more than a grandma to Marilyn and Marian.

She was loved and thought of as their Mother. More than a grandma - a very dear friend. Marilyn and Marian will treasure the memories of their many times together forever.

Those thankful for sharing her life are her sons, Roger Ridder and his wife, Margot, of Klemme, and Dennis Ridder, of Mason City; daughter, Maralee Ruter, of Britt; grandchildren, Monica Kruse, Randy Ridder, Sylvia Shell, Gloria Bittner, Sonja Ridder, Wendy Grove, Brian Ruter, Jason Ruter, Marilyn Petersen, Marian Klein and Dennis C. Ridder; 15 great-grandchildren; brother, Gerald Koerner and his wife, Bernice, of Klemme; sisters, Valeria Bridges, of Klemme, and Nova Gelner and her husband, Leon, of Klemme.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter, Marilyn; granddaughter, Marlene; and brother Kermit Koerner.

CLARICE HEIN

OSAGE - Clarice Hein, 88, of Osage, died Thursday (June 7, 2001) at the Faith Lutheran Church in Osage. She was born Feb. 8, 1913 on the family farm in Union Township, Worth County, the daughter of Peter and Anna (Schoger) Paulson. She attended rural school in Worth County and graduated from Osage High School in 1931.

Clarice was united in marriage to Edwin Hein, of New Haven, on Aug. 17, 1935. Clarice was baptized, confirmed and married by the Rev. O.C. Myre at Rock Creek Lutheran Church in rural Osage.

They lived on a farm near New Haven until 1942, when they purchased and moved to a farm in Burr Oak Township. They lived there until 1980 when they retired and moved to their new home in Osage.

Clarice was employed at the Faith Lutheran Home for 15 years and continued to do volunteer work there for another 15 years.

She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Elizabeth Circle and held office in the Circle. Clarice served as secretary to local W.M.F. and also served on the Conference Board. She was a member of Faith Home Auxiliary.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 8 p.m. There will be further visitation one hour before services at the church.

She is survived by her husband, Edwin, of Osage; one daughter, Carol Dill and her husband, Gordon, of Salinas, Calif.; three sons, Russell Hein and his wife, Glorida, of Little Cedar, Bob Hein and his wife, Ann, of Winfield, Ill., and Allan Hein and his wife, Janis, of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

OSAGE - Dr. Robert Wayne Pennington, 70, of 626 Poplar, Osage, died Thursday (June 7, 2001) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester of complications of melanoma.

Bob Pennington was born June 26, 1930 in Washington County, Iowa. The son of the Rev. George C. and Minerva (Jones) Pennington, he lived his early years in small southeast Iowa towns. He graduated from Monroe, Iowa High School in 1948. From 1952 to 1956, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier Midway as a hospital corpsman and X-ray technician.

On June 5, 1954, in Monroe, he married his high school sweetheart and lifelong companion, Sarah "Sally" Van Doorninck. Daniel, Cynthia and Juli were born to them.

He studied at Iowa State University, graduating a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1962. He practiced in Osage from 1964 to 1991. After retiring from veterinary practice, he served as Mitchell County Supervisor from 1996 to 2000; promoting projects including the MCRHC-Osage Hospital and the new county jail.

He served his community through the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, the Osage Community School Board, the Osage Library Board and the Kiwanis Club.

From his boyhood he bred and raised pigeons and won many championships in the pigeon fancy. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and bird watching, and found great solace in the natural surroundings at the New Haven Potholes.

He loved to sing hymns in harmony and enjoyed a house filled with music. His quick wit and deep laugh betrayed a tender heart. He faced life without pretense and made fun of life's indignities. He valued hard work and integrity.

Above all, bob treasured his faith in Christ and his family. He enjoyed his veterinary profession, his camaraderie with farmers, quiet times with his birds, the morning coffee group and travels to explore new places.

Those so thankful for sharing his life are his wife, Sally; son, Dr. Daniel Pennington, of Mason City, along with his wife, Joan and children, Laura and Claire; a daughter, Cynthia Walton, of Bangkok, Thailand, with her husband, Kevin and children, Joshua, Amy, Jonathan and Lukas; and a daughter, Juli Servatius, of Maplewood, Minn., with her husband, John. He is also survived by his mother, Minerva Pennington, of Columbus Junction, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, the Rev. George Pennington; and a brother, John Pennington.

She was united in marriage to Carl Marcus Little on Dec. 27, 1946 in Pittsburgh, Pa. She was a homemaker. They had lived in Ames for nine years, Garner for 22 years, Indiana for 11 years, Montana for 3 1/2 years and South Dakota for six years.

Lois was a 4-H leader, Girl Scout leader, member of Presbyterian Women, Eastern Star, P.E.O. and was a Sunday school teacher.

She is survived by her husband; two sons, Dennis Little, Stockridge, Ga., and David Little, of Mason City; two daughters, Beth Ann Little, of Naperville, Ill., and Charlotte Little, of Grafton, Wis.; daughters-in-law, Laura Little and Cathy Jo Little; grandsons, Matthew and Andrew Little; granddaughter, Amelia Little.

Alice was born Dec. 27, 1920 on the family farm rural Britt, the daughter of Paul and Mary (Munson) Madson. She graduated from Britt High School in 1938, Britt Junior College and continued her education at Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls. Alice taught rural school Britt, and then Britt elementary from 1945-1948.

Alice married Leonard Manson June 5, 1948 at the Evangelical Free Church, Britt. They farmed in the LuVerne area for one year and then near Dundee from 1949-1969 and then near Manchester for one year. In 1970 they moved to Clear Lake, where they managed the United Methodist Camp from 1970-1984. In 1984 they moved into their present home in Ventura.

Alice enjoyed raising flowers, gardening, being around her family and cooking for them. She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church, Clear Lake.

Alice is survived by her husband, Leonard L. Manson, of Ventura; five children, Lance A. Manson and his wife, Jan, of New Hampton, Craig L. Manson and his wife, LeAnn, of Edgar, Wisc., Neal P. Manson and his wife, LaRee, of Marathon, Wisc., Lenice A. Lee and her husband, Daniel, of Huxley, and Sherilyn S. Theel and her husband, Darin, of Forest City; ten grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one step-great grandchild; one brother, Richard P. Madson, of Ft. Dodge; and one sister, Lola Muhm and her husband, Merle, of Britt.

Laura Hannah Ramker was born Feb. 22, 1912 in rural Butler County, a daughter of Bernard and Hannah (Cronin) Ramker and died Friday, June 8, 2001 at the Liebe Care Center in Greene, of complications from a stroke.

She received her education in the rural Butler county schools and later attended the Sacred Heart Academy in Greene for nine years. She graduated from the Greene High School in 1929. After teaching rural schools in Butler County for 12 years she worked as a cashier for Interstate Power Company, in Greene for two years. While teaching she served as the first president of the Butler County Rural Teachers Association organized in 1937 in which she held various offices.

On Nov. 22, 1945, she was united in marriage to Raymond Gerhard of Marble Rock at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene. They lived on a farm in Floyd County for 25 years before retiring to their home in Greene. While living near Marble Rock she served as treasurer of the Marble Rock Library Board for 10 years and attended St. Mary's Catholic Church at Roseville and was a member of the Rosary Society there.

Laura was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene, a member of the Ladies Guild, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and ACCW of the Charles City Deanery where she served many offices. She was also active in several card clubs, and did volunteer work, where she received the Partners of Aging Award from the State of Iowa in 1993. She served 20 years on the nursing home care committee. In 1998 Laura received the Greene Spirit Award for her outstanding volunteer service.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond in 1977, her parents, and brothers, Louis, William, Floyd "Mike," Glen and George Ramker.

Living family members include her daughter, Lou Ann and her husband, Kent Sandberg, of Des Moines; her son, Don and his wife, Barbara Gerhard, of Stanley, Kan.; granddaughter, Lauri and her husband, Steve, of Lisbon; three grandsons, Tim, of Denver, Colo., Ken and Caysey, of Stanley, Kan.; and four great-grandchildren, Taylor, Mitchell, Tanner and Alicia.

Cleo C. Lee was born Aug. 13, 1918 at New Haven, the daughter of Alex and Agnes (Gilles) Weber. She graduated from Osage High School.

Cleo married Robert J. Lee on May 9, 1942 in Osage. She lived in Osage for most of their life. Robert died on Oct. 6, 1974. Cleo was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and was church organist for many years. She was active in the Sacred Heart Ladies Guild and Study Club.

Survivors include four sons, John Wade Lee and wife, Terri, of Osage, Richard Alan Lee and wife, Valerie, of Stillwater, Minn., Robert Jeffery Lee and wife, Kathy, of Carlisle, Pa., Scott Michael Lee and wife, Christi, of Hugo, Minn.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Roman was born Dec. 18, 1912, to John and Sarah (Steiger) Thome in Stacyville. He is the last of 12 children. Roman grew up in the Meyer, Iowa area.

He was united in marriage to Wava Krumlinde on April 6, 1942 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. They had just celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. Roman farmed in the Osage area, before moving into Osage in 1967, when he went to work for Germaine Mullenbach as a mason. He then became the custodian for the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and school until his retirement. Roman was an avid fisherman and did so at any chance he could.

Survivors include two daughters, Joeleen Samec and her husband, Richard, of New Hampton, and their children, Jerry, Randy and Jill and daughter, Deanna Shoars and her husband, Michael, of Orchard, and their children, Chad and Chris; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Wava, seven brothers, Joseph, Frank, John, Albert, Fredrick, Carl and Arnold, and four sisters, Theresia, Elizabeth, Florentina, and Rosina.

DAVID E. SMITH

MASON CITY - David E. Smith, 91, of Four Third St. N.W., the Manor, died Saturday (May 26, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 First St. N.E. with the Rev. Richard D. Scheerer officiating. Private family interment will be held at the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Congregational United Church of Christ or to Hospice of North Iowa in memory of David E. Smith.

David was born Feb. 28, 1910 in Yankton, S.D., the son of Edward L. and Eunice L. (Champlin) Smith. He graduated from Orwell High School, Orwell, Ohio in 1927 and from Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio in 1932.

David married Anne Hitzhusen in Narberth, Pa., April 1, 1940. From 1946 until 1976 he served as an independent insurance agent for the Hartford and Travelers Insurance Companies. He was also a Certified Life Underwriter. For many years, Dave, as he was known to his many friends and clients, and Anne were associated in the David E. Smith Insurance Agency.

Over the years, he gave generously of his time to many civic organizations. He was an active member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ. In addition, he was a member of the Junior and Senior Divisions, Mason City Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis International, 150-year member of the Elks Lodge, member of Benevolence Lodge #145 A.F. & A.M., High Twelve, North Iowa Shrine Club, Executive Club and was a charter member of Mason City Toastmasters International. He took an active interest in others, along with his support of local events and organizations. He enjoyed bridge, gardening, fishing, and his daily swim at the "Y."

David is survived by his two daughters, Rebecca Booth and husband, Edward, of Rolling Meadows, Ill., and Carol Schacht and husband, Allen, of Pittsford, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Amy Jo Badowski and husband, John, of Honolulu, Hawaii, Jennifer Anne Booth and Jason Booth, Rolling Meadows, Ill.; and one great-granddaughter, Nicole Malia Badowski, of Honolulu, Hawaii; one sister, Dorothy M. Smith, of Oberlin, Ohio; and one brother, Robert L. Smith, of Oberlin, Ohio.

David was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Anne, on June 5,1987, and a son in infancy.

KLEMME - The funeral for Dolores Leona Alberta
Ridder will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at the United Methodist Church in Klemme, with the Rev. Curtis DeVance officiating. Interment will be in the Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on today at the Tenold Funeral Home in Klemme and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Dolores Leona Alberta Ridder, the eldest daughter of Albert and Lillie (Lau) Koerner was born July 21, 1905 in Klemme, Iowa. She attended school in Klemme and graduated with the first class to graduate from Klemme High School in 1924.

She was a telephone operator for her father, with the switchboard located in their home.

She was united in marriage to Levi Ridder on June 14, 1928 in Mason City, Iowa. They lived in Manly, where they operated a billiard parlor and came to Klemme in 1930, and operated a billiard parlor and tavern. Dolores was well known for her baking, quilting and gave her family unconditional love.

She and Levi traveled to Germany in 1958 and World's Fair in Brussels, Belgium and the 1934 Worlds Fair in Chicago. She also traveled many places after Levi's death.

She was an avid sports fan, being a strong supporter of the Klemme Shamrocks and the Iowa Hawkeyes. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and church circles in Klemme.

After her health failed, she entered the Westview Care Center in Britt, where she died on Thursday (June 7, 2001).

Those thankful for sharing her life are her sons, Roger Ridder and his wife, Margot, of Klemme, and Dennis Ridder, of Mason City; daughter, Maralee Ruter, of Britt; grandchildren, Monica Kruse, Randy Ridder, Sylvia Shell, Gloria Bittner, Sonja Ridder, Wendy Grove, Brian Ruter, Jason Ruter, Marilyn Petersen, Marian Klein and Dennis C. Ridder; 15 great-grandchildren; brother, Gerald Koerner and his wife, Bernice, of Klemme; sisters, Valeria Bridges, of Klemme, and Nova Gelner and her husband, Leon, of Klemme.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter, Marilyn; granddaughter, Marlene; and brother Kermit Koerner.
