BEN HINDERS

BRITT - Ben Hinders, 92, of Britt, passed away Wednesday (May 30, 2001) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

The funeral for Ben Hinders will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Christian Reformed Church in Britt, with Pastor Steven Mulder officiating. Burial will take place in the Woden Christian Reformed Cemetery near Woden.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt and one hour before services at the church.

Ben Hinders was born Sept. 27, 1908, on the family farm in Othel Township, Hancock County. His parents were Thomas Hinders Sr. and Mertie Pannkuk Hinders. He was baptized as an infant and later made a profession of faith at the Woden Christian Reformed Church. He attended Orthel and Bingham Township schools.

He was united in marriage with Gladys Mary Seefeld on Feb. 25, 1933, at the Woden Christian Reformed Parsonage. They made their home on a farm near Wesley until 1957, when they moved to Britt.

Ben did custom trucking until 1974, plus many other jobs at the Britt Farmers Co-op and Winnebago Industries. He operated his yard service business until Aug. 21, 1994, when he sustained a heart attack.

He served his community in a variety of ways, including school director and president of Farmers telephone line.

Ben was a member of the Woden Christian Reformed Church, serving as deacon and elder. He helped organize the Britt Christian Reformed church in 1957 and was a charter member. He was very active in all the church activities. He was one of the first elders elected in the new church. He served a total of 40 years in the consistory.

He is survived by one daughter, Mavis Jean and James Christians, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; four grandchildren, Ronald and Kristine Turner, Janice and Joey Marion, Janet and John Schreur, and Daniel and Sue Christians; eight great-grandchildren, Samantha Turner, Laura and Joshua Marion, Nathan and Kelly Ryckman, Jordan Ryckman, and Nicholas, Amanda and Sari Christians; one great-great grandson, Zachary Ryckman; two sisters, Gertrude Riggle, of Forest City, and Mertie and Ernie Georg of Algona; three brothers, Milton and Imogene Hinders of Algona, Herman and Marion Hinders, of Worthington, Minn., and Dr. Alvin and JoAnn Hinders, of Fulton, Ky.; two sisters-in-law, Ann Hinders, of Britt, and Irene Hinders, of Woden.

Ben was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gladys, in 1995; one daughter, Marlene, in 2001; one son, Arllan, in 1955; one great-grandson, David Marion, in 1984; and three brothers, Martin, Thomas Jr. and Ted Hinders.

ANNAMAE MCBREARTY MARTIN

NORTHWOOD - Annamae McBrearty Martin, 95, of Northwood, died Wednesday (May 30, 2001) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Paul Holmer officiating. Interment will follow at South Shell Rock Cemetery, rural Northwood.

Visitation will be held for one hour before the service at the church.

Annamae was born on Oct. 28, 1905, in Albert Lea, Minn., the daughter of Roy and Anna (Engen) McBrearty. Her mother died when she was 18 days old and her grandparents, Chris and Christine Engen, raised her.

Annamae attended Albert Lea schools and she enjoyed reminiscing about her childhood with her friends and family in Albert Lea.

Annamae was united in marriage to John Martin on March 14, 1924, at the Trinity Lutheran Church parsonage in Albert Lea. They were parents of three children, Donald, James and Anita. They made their home in Gordonsville, Woolstock, Albert Lea and, finally, Northwood.

Annamae worked at her uncle's grocery store as a teenager and was employed at Bowen's Food Store. She then worked for 25 years at Fallgatter's Market in Northwood. She cherished the friendships of many customers throughout the years.

Her favorite pastime was reading and she kept track of people near and far. She delighted in the visits of many people, both young and old. Annamae and John moved to the Lutheran Retirement Home in February 1992. John died in 1996.

Annamae is survived by her daughter, Anita Monus and her husband, Vic, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; two daughters-in-law, Nan Martin, of Northwood and Rita Martin, of Urbandale; and eight grandchildren, Nancy and Gary Hengesteg, of Northwood, Dan and Sandi Martin and Ron Martin, all of Fort Collins, Colo., Mike Martin, of Ames, Arne and Calli (Martin) Peterson and Tony and Denise Martin, all of Des Moines, Gregg and Kathy (Monus) Soady, of West Richland, Wash., and Mark and April Monus, of Calgary. Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Randy and Kim Hengesteg, of Northwood, Sonja Hengesteg, of Minneapolis, Benji, Angie and Ryan Martin, of Fort Collins, Colo., Danielle Martin, of Albuquerque, N.M., Amber and Katie Soady, of Washington, Kyle, Brandon and Jared Monus, of Calgary, Bill and Jennifer (Martin) Grandstaff, of Conger, Minn., Joshua and Sunny Martin, of Ames, Cassie and Renae Peterson, and Jessica, Matthew and Stephanie Martin, all of Des Moines; five great-great-grandchildren, Scott Hengesteg, Alexis and Austin Grandstaff, Meadow Martin and Tason Conner; and several nieces and nephews.

Annamae was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sons, Don Martin in 1975 and Jim Martin in 1977.

JESSIE L. THAYER

ROCKWELL - Jessie L. (Halfpap) Thayer, 80, of 10556 210th Rockwell, died Wednesday (May 30, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at the Swaledale United Methodist Church, Swaledale.

DERRICK TYLER ANDERSON

MINDEN, Neb. - Derrick Tyler Anderson, 15, of Minden Neb., formerly of Coulter, passed away Tuesday (May 29, 2001) at his home in Minden.

There will be a graveside service for Derrick at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Belmond Cemetery in Belmond, with the Rev. C. Lee Gamblin officiating. Visitation for Derrick Anderson will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond.

Derrick, the son of Gail and Sherry (Peyton) Anderson, was born on Dec. 17, 1985, in Iron Mountain, Mich. The family later moved to the Clarion, Belmond and Coulter area.

Derrick attended CAL-Latimer-Dows schools. He and his family had recently moved to Nebraska. Derrick was currently in the 9th grade at Minden High School. Derrick enjoyed playing baseball and spending time with his friends.

EARL R. ROBERTS

NAMPA, Idaho - Earl R. Roberts, 73, of Nampa, Idaho, passed away on Wednesday (May 23, 2001) at the Veterans Administration Extended Care Hospital.

A memorial service was conducted on Friday, May 25, 2001, at the Nampa First Christian Church, with Pastor Bill Garrett officiating.

Earl was born June 25, 1927, in Manly, Iowa, to Arthur and Emma (Newbery) Roberts. He attended schools in Manly and graduated from Manly High School in 1944.

He served his country proudly during World War II in the United States Navy.

In 1950, Bob married Lois Nall in Boise, Idaho, and they had three children.

Earl is survived by his wife of nearly 51 years, Lois; three children, Brenda (Charlie) Mattson, Spencer (Karen) Roberts, and Darin Roberts, all of Nampa, Idaho; two granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Arthur Roberts, of California, Donald (Velma) Roberts, and Delbert (Jeanette) Roberts, both of Manly; his mother-in-law, Fran Nall, of Boise, Idaho; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and father-in-law, John Nall.

WILLIAM 'DOC' TIETZ

ELDORA - William "Doc" Tietz, 79, of Eldora, died Thursday (May 31, 2001) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City, from Alzheimer's disease.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, with Pastor David Splett officiating. Burial will follow at Eldora City Cemetery in Eldora.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora.

Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora and to the Mid Iowa Alzheimer's Association.

Bill was born July 10, 1921, in Eldora, Iowa, the son of Herman and Lydia (Guenther) Tietz. He attended Eldora Public Schools and graduated from Eldora High School in 1938. Bill graduated from Iowa State University with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine and practiced in Eldora for 39 years.

Bill was united in marriage to Elizabeth "Betty" Oldenburg on Oct. 26, 1947, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora. Betty died in 1993.

He loved his profession as an avocation as well as a vocation. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora. Bill was a past board member of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association. He was Sergeant at Arms for the Eldora Rotary Club for many years.

Bill served as past chairman of the board of the 2nd National Bank of Eldora. He served on the County Board of Education, as well as being past president of the Eldora Memorial Hospital. Bill had served as livestock judge for the Hardin County Fair for many years. He was also selected as the 1963 Eldora Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year. Bill built and operated Town & Country Mobile Home Park in Eldora. He was an avid supporter of Eldora as a successful community.

Bill was passionate about sports, music, bird watching, gardening, traveling, and art. Bill was devoted to sharing with and caring for his wife, Betty; his children, grandchildren, and his parents.

Survivors include two daughters, Janann (Brad) Price, of Clear Lake, and Trudy (John) Martin, of Urbandale; two sons, Bill (Sue) Tietz, of West Branch, and Dan (Cindy) Tietz, of Atalissa; one sister, Bette (Ralph) Rieke, of Fairmont, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Brad, Will, Anne, Ben, Sam, Hannah, Lizzie, Becky and Katie.

He was preceded in death by parents; his wife, Betty; one brother, Ted Tietz; and a sister-in-infancy.

MASON CITY - Mary E. Ashlock, 85, of Mason City, died Friday, June 1, 2001, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave., with the Rev. Frederick Wood officiating. Burial will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and will continue one hour prior to service time at the church on Monday.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Mary E. Ashlock memorial fund.

Mary Elizabeth (Eberhardt) Ashlock was born on Oct. 5, 1915, at Belle Plaine, Minn., the daughter of migrant Russian workers John and Anna Marie (Brill) Eberhardt. She attended school in Mason City. Mary was confirmed in her faith on May 3, 1931, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason City.

On April 5, 1932, Mary was united in marriage with George Ashlock at Albert Lea, Minn. The couple made their home in Mason City, where Mary worked for the J.E. Decker Packing Plant. Mary spent much time tending to her flower garden, and it was something in which she took great pride. Mary also enjoyed to crochet and sew.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, George Ashlock, of Mason City; daughter, Betty Lou Harris and her husband, Arthur, of Mason City; three grandchildren, Sandra Kay Cookman and her husband, John, of Mason City, Kathleen Zilge and her husband, Larry, of Mason City, and Tom Harris and his wife, Karla, of Spirit Lake; seven great-grandchildren, Brock, Chase, and Drew Cookman, Kristopher and Kristina Zilge, and Daniel and Dustin Harris; five sisters-in-law, Omie Eberhardt, of Mason City, Dorothy Birch, of Mason City, Vivian Broadwell of Clinton, Genevieve Peterson, of Mississippi, and Dorothy Ashlock, of Emporian, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, John, Henry, and Jake Eberhardt; and two sisters, Mollie Cory and Irene Jackson.

INEZ 'INE' LOGE JENSEN

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Inez 'Ine' Jensen, 77, died Friday (June 1, 2001) at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Bonnerup Funeral Service Chapel in Albert Lea, Minn., with the Rev. John M. Henriksen officiating. Interment will be in Carlston Cemetery, rural Alden, Minn.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral chapel.

Inez was born Feb. 25, 1924, in Elmore, Minn., the daughter of Andrew and Christine (Schumaker) Loge. She was a graduate of Bricelyn, Minn., High School.

On Nov. 16, 1944, she was united in marriage to Hartle 'Bud' Jensen in Minneapolis.

Inez held various jobs in the Wells area before moving to Minneapolis where she was employed as a bookkeeper for the National Tea Co. for over 35 years.

She enjoyed her time with friends in her retirement club in Minneapolis. She also enjoyed gardening and fishing and was an excellent cook. Inez took great pride in her appearance and loved to spend time with her nieces and nephews. She always had a sack lunch to send home with them after their visits.

Inez is survived by one sister, Ruth and her husband, Elmer Trytten, of Mason City; numerous brothers and sisters-in-law; many nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hartle 'Bud;' four brothers, Herman, Lloyd, Alfred and Arthur Loge; one sister, Hazel Sickels.

Ine will be sadly missed by her loving family and many friends.

The family has asked that memorials be directed to the American Lung Association or the Hospice program.

AGNES B. GUNDERSON

LAKE MILLS - Agnes B. Gunderson, 89, died Friday (June 1, 2001) at North Iowa Mercy Hospital in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Leland, with the Rev. Merlin Norris officiating. Burial will be at Forest Home Cemetery, Leland.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church Monday.

Agnes Blanche Gunderson was born May 16, 1912, at Newark, Ill., the daughter of John T. and Bertha (Olson) Johnson.

She was united in marriage to Maynard S. Gunderson on Sept. 10, 1930, in the parsonage in Frost, Minn. Maynard passed away on April 18, 1987.

Agnes is survived by her two children, Donna and her husband, Robert Brekken, of Mission, Texas/Siren, Wis., and Gary and his wife, Sandra Gunderson, of Bullhead City, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Julie and her husband, Marv Krueger, David and his wife, Lori Brekken, and Ann and her husband, Shawn Stone; six great-grandchildren, Kyle Krueger, Jason, Grant, Peter and Jacob Brekken and Chloe Stone; four sisters, Bernice and her husband, Harold Engebritson, of Scarville, Audrey and her husband, Robert Boekelman, of Titonka, Judy and her husband, Orlo Sorenson, of Manhattan, Kan., and Avis and her husband, Al Weringa, of Elmore, Minn.; one brother, Arthur and his wife, Lavina Johnson, of Sandwich, Ill; one sister-in-law, Lillian Johnson of Clinton; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

MASON CITY -Dorothy H. Rankin, 90, of 1319 Sixth St. S.E., died Friday (June 1, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

MASON CITY - Steve J. Hejna, 65, of 1048 First St. N.W., died Friday (June 1, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City where a flag folding ceremony and ''Taps'' will be performed by the Mason City Memorial Association.

The family will greet friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and there will be a wake service beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Steve J. Hejna was born on Sept. 11, 1935, in Yankton, S.D., the son of Emil and Helen (Kralicek) Hejna. He grew up on a farm in the Yankton area. Following school he enlisted in the United States Army.

After his honorable discharge from the Army, he moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., where he met Donna R. Ohlsen. They were united in marriage on Aug. 20, 1966, at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

In 1967 they moved to Mason City where they made their home and raised their two children. Steve worked for 38 years with Roto-Rooter. He retired in 1995. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, a 34-year member of the Elks, Knights of Columbus, Moose and United Commercial Travelers. In his spare time he enjoyed gardening raising many different types of vegetables and flowers.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Donna Hejna of Mason City; a son, Paul Hejna and his wife, Kathy, of Mason City; a daughter, Sara Bollwahn and her husband, Josh, of Denver, Colo.; a grandson, Aaron Bollwahn of Denver, Colo.; brothers, Emil Hejna Jr. and his wife, Lilah, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Kenneth Hejna and his wife, Agnus, of Tabor, S.D., Lawrence Hejna of Oklahoma, Lloyd Hejna and his wife, Marilyn, of Tabor, S.D., Clarence Hejna of Spencer, and Robert Hejna and his wife, Kathy, of Tabor, S.D.; a sister, Betty Slama and her husband, Laddie, of Tyndall, S.D.; and several nieces and nephews.

RUDD - Sandy Krull, 59, of Glendale, Wis., formerly of rural Rudd, died Friday (June 1, 2001) at her home under Hospice care after a 20-year battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eden Presbyterian Church, 3105 Glass Ave., Rudd, with the Rev. John Bates officiating. Interment will be in the Eden Presbyterian Cemetery.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, and will continue one hour before services at the church Tuesday.

Sandy was born on Sept. 29, 1941, the daughter of Clinton J. and Dorothy M. (Brandau) Brandau. Sandy graduated from Osage Community High School in 1962.

She was united in marriage to Marvin Krull on Nov. 23, 1962, at the Eden Presbyterian Church north of Rudd. They made their home in rural Rudd. They were blessed with two sons and one daughter.

Sandy enlightened the world with her love for many: children, grandchildren and nursing home residents as a CNA. She and her husband moved to the Milwaukee area in 1993.

Even though the battle with cancer was long and hard, she had a zest for life and perceived every day as a gift.

Sandy is survived by her parents, Clinton and Dorothy Brandau of Osage; her husband, Marvin Krull of Glendale, Wis.; a daughter, Pam Carman and her husband, Eric, of Whitefish Bay, Wis., and their two sons, Sam and Zach; and two sons, Marlan Krull and his friend, Denise Petersen, of Mason City and two sons, B.J. and Jordan, and Ken Krull and his wife, Christine Schrage, of Phoenix, Ariz., and their son, Carter Schrage.

GREENE - Funeral services for Robert D. ''Butch'' Viers, 60, of 407A Courtland St., formerly of Waterloo, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Robert Darrell Viers was born Nov. 4, 1940, in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County, a son of Eugene Robert and Ruth Mae (Skillen) Viers and died Sunday (June 3, 2001) at Cedar Valley Hospice in Waterloo.

He received his education in the Greene public schools and was united in marriage to Ruth High on March 4, 1962, in Greene. They lived in Greene where he was employed by the City of Greene as cemetery caretaker. He later moved to Charles City where he was employed by Riverside Cemetery Association.

''Butch'' was employed by John Deere and Wiessman Steel both in Waterloo and LaPorte Road Memorials before returning to Greene where he was employed as a crane operator for Knock's Sand and Gravel in Clarksville.

''Butch'' will be remembered as one who enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting and more recently playing golf. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He was associated with the Church of Christ throughout his life.

Living family members include two daughters, Nancy Simmons and Lisa Marie Viers, both of Waterloo; one son, Dale Dean Viers of Fort Madison; grandchildren, Jessica, Holly, Jennifer, Desiree and Destiny; one great-grandson, Floyd Becker; his parents, Gene and Ruth Viers of Greene; and two brothers and their spouses, Jim and Jo Viers of Rockwell City and Dennis and Judy Viers of Greene.

Robert was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth Viers, and a nephew, Joe Viers.

Raymond Frederick Wagoner was born Jan. 28, 1917, near Hampton, a son of Paul and Anna (Mutzel) Wagoner, and died peacefully, Saturday (June 2, 2001) with his family at his side at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

He received his education in the Hampton area, graduating from the Hampton High School in 1935.

On Feb. 25, 1940, he was united in marriage to Frances Sprung of Sheffield at the Methodist Church in Geneva. They lived in the Meservy and Sheffield area before moving to the Dougherty area where they farmed for 21 years. In October 1965, they moved to their home in Greene where he was employed at McRoberts Implement until his retirement in 1982. In his retirement years he spent his time playing golf.

Raymond was a member of the United Methodist Church of Greene where he served on the Board of Trustees and Finance Committee and he was Financial Secretary for many years. He also served on the Rose Hill Cemetery Board in Greene.

Those thankful for sharing his life include his loving wife, Frances of Greene; his daughter, Marlys and her husband, Jerry Petznick, of Northwood; two grandchildren and their spouses, April and David Mittag of New London, Mo., and Jade and Lisa Petznick of Pelican Rapids, Minn.; three great-grandchildren, Skyler and Mariah Mittag and Matthew Petznick; two brothers, LeRoy and his wife, Sue Wagoner, of Charles City, and Dallas Wagoner of Hampton; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Wagoner of Iowa Falls and Esther Sprung of Sheffield; one brother-in-law, Delbert Sprung of Sheffield; and cousins, nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was born in Omaha, Neb., on June 7, 1910, the daughter of Bert A. and Elizabeth (Mecklenburg) Rankin. After grammar school in Manly, she graduated from Mason City High School in 1927 and attended Hamilton Business College.

She was variously employed in local dress shops and the superintendent's office at Chicago & Northwestern Railway before enlisting in the SPARS (U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary) in March of 1943. She served 32 months during World War II, initially as Radioman 2/C in Miami and, after being commissioned as an ensign, in Cleveland headquarters. While stationed in Miami, she was the only woman to participate in an anti-submarine blimp patrol during World War II.

Following discharge from military service, she was secretary/treasurer of Frigid Dough, Inc., in Los Angeles before joining Northwestern States Portland Cement Company where she worked as a secretary and later, as editor of the company publication, "Run of the Mill," until her retirement in 1975.

She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and the American Legion. She also enjoyed volunteering at the library and Waves National.

Those left to cherish her memory are two nieces, Carita Hugo and her husband, Tjark, of Mason City and Penny Holden of Mason City; three nephews, James Rankin of Palm Springs, Calif., David Rankin and his wife, Hady, of Anchorage, Alaska, and Michael Rankin of Green Valley, Ariz.; several great and great-great-nieces and nephews; two special friends, Mary Ann Dodd and Eileen Colloton, both of Mason City.

On Feb. 3, 1959, Robin was born to Charles Arhart and Lorraine Jones. After receiving her GED, she continued her education and graduated as a LPN. For the next several years, she worked in the Klemme Care Center as a LPN.

On Oct. 30, 1987, Robin Arhart was united in marriage to Richard Ray Clem. They made their home in Mason City. Robin enjoyed cooking her favorite dishes for family and church functions. Her favorite recipes were lasagna and taco lasagna. If she wasn't cooking, she could be found watching "Judge Judy" or taking care of her parakeets, parrots and lovebirds. Garage sales were an activity that Robin and friend Lila Paulsen did together.

Those that will treasure her memories are her husband, Richard Ray Clem, of Mason City; two children, Bridget and William Clem; three sisters, Sarah Lilly of Bossier, Ill., Rhonda Feeney of Lubbock, Texas, and Eleanaor Bubblitz of Austin, Minn.; two brothers, Charles Arhart of Bossier City, Ill., and Fred Arhart of Washington State; a grandmother, Mary Shreckengost; a very close friend and caretaker, Lila Paulsen, of Mason City; and many friends, nieces and nephews.

Jessie L. (Halfpap) Thayer was born on Aug. 18, 1920, the daughter of John and Lena (Gartz) Halfpap on a farm near Belmond. She graduated from Belmond High School in the Class of 1938. At the age of 18 she began teaching rural country school; she did so for the following six years.

Jessie met Orval Thayer while attending high school in Belmond. They were united in marriage on Feb. 7, 1940, near Sioux Falls, S.D. The couple began their married lives farming near Belmond.

In 1947 the couple moved to a farm near Burchinal which they farmed until their retirement in 1997 at the age of 76.

Jessie's great enjoyment in life was being with her family and tending to the animals and her garden. She had a green thumb for raising beautiful flowers which she often shared with her friends and family.

Jessie was a member of Swaledale United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

The Mayo Foundation acknowledges with grateful appreciation the generous contribution Jessie L. Thayer has made to the advancement of medical science and the welfare of mankind.

"To give oneself so that others may live in health and happiness is a truly noble gesture."

Those thankful for having shared in Jessie's life include her husband of over 59 years, Orval; two sons, Lynn and his wife, Laura Thayer, of Sheffield and Bill Thayer of Clear Lake; one daughter, April Sherwood and her husband, Dave, of Rockwell; seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; three sisters and one brother and their families.

On Dec. 5, 1936, Bessie married Carl ''Scoop'' Schulz in Osage. They lived their married life in Mitchell County. They owned a grocery store in Mitchell.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

Bessie is survived by a sister, Rose Mary Ellingson of Northwood, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl ''Scoop'' Schulz Oct. 1, 1989; and a brother, John Orth Jr.

RICHARD HARRY DUNN

MESA, Ariz.-Richard Harry Dunn, 76, formerly of Mason City, died Tuesday (May 29, 2001) at his home in Mesa.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 4, at Church of the Master in Mesa, Ariz., with Pastor Malcolm Davis officiating. A memorial service will be held in Mason City at a later date.

Richard Harry Dunn was born in Mason City, the second son of Ralph B. and Mary June (McArthur) Dunn on Oct. 11, 1924. He graduated from Portland No. 6 Cerro Gordo County, then attended Mason City High School where he graduated in 1942. He attended Iowa State College until he was called home to help on the farm when his father lost a leg in a farm accident.

He was a 4-H member and leader, a Farm Bureau member and a charter member of Ponies of America. He also belonged to the Aberdeen Angus Association. He was a livestock judge and buyer and many recognized his outstanding voice when he worked horse shows in the area. He received an award for outstanding farmer of the year. Most of his interests were farm related.

In 1948 he married Betty Ann Duea. Together they had three children, Larry Brian, Thomas Richard and Mary Jayne.

He was a purebred cattle herdsman for three years in South Dakota. After farming he was employed by Heidkross Herefords, Sheffield Cattle Company, Armour, Midwest Wholesale and Younkers from which he retired in 1988 and moved to Arizona.

In 1967 he married Elizabeth Hanes Jackley and adopted her two daughters, Jane Elizabeth and Helen Frances.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Elizabeth; Jane Angell and her husband, Doug, Mason City, Helen Jackley and fiance, Lewis Seales, Fort Worth, Texas, Larry Dunn and his wife, Lisa, of Mason City, Tom Dunn and his wife, Rita, Mason City, and Mary Jayne Schmidt, Mason City; grandchildren, Joshua Morse, Nathan Morse, Tyler Dunn, Tucker Dunn, Zachary Holland-Dunn, Parker Holland-Dunn, Meredith Dunn, Gabriel Dunn, Jillian Dunn, Ann Schmidt and Haley Dunn.

He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1964; his brother, Robert; his parents; and a grandson, Alexander Dunn.

John was born Sept. 16, 1938, the son of Gil and Anne (Nygren) Klaudt, at Waverly. John graduated from Waverly High School in 1956 and Wartburg College in 1961 with a major in physical education and a minor in business education.

John married Sandy Rosenau, June 24, 1962, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Waverly. He served in the United States Army Reserve.

John began his teaching career at Riceville High School from 1961 to 1964 at which time he accepted a position with the Clear Lake High School. He received his master's degree in 1970 and continued with the school retiring in 1981 on a medical disability. When John came to Clear Lake, he organized and started the Clear Lake wrestling program and was assistant football coach. John taught in the high school and was administrative assistant to the principal in 1969, continuing to coach until 1975.

John was awarded the Eagle Scout and also received a heroism award at the age of 15 for rescuing a friend in a boating accident on the Cedar River in Waverly.

John enjoyed music in general and played drums in different bands. He loved all sports and was a Division I and high school wrestling official. He was very active in various community activities and liked to play games and cards. He also enjoyed Zach and Tiger, the family dogs. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, the National Education Association and the Iowa State Education Association.

John is survived by his wife, Sandy of Clear Lake; two sons, Jason Klaudt and his wife, Michelle, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jeff Klaudt of Clear Lake; his daughter, Jodi Holck and her husband, Mark, of Clear Lake; a sister, MaryAnn Kisker and her husband, Tom, of Iowa City; a brother, Dick Klaudt and his wife, Heather, of Waterville Valley, N.H.; his mother-in-law, Evalyne Rosenau of Waverly; a brother-in-law, Doug Rosenau and his wife, Carol, of Marlboro, Mass.; three nieces, Emily Rosenau, Hayley Klaudt and Susan Kisker; and two nephews, Brendon Rosenau and Scott Kisker.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Emil Rosenau.

SYNNEVA ABBAS

KANAWHA -Synneva Abbas, 89, passed away Saturday (June 2, 2001) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kanawha Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. William H. Breen, interim pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery, Kanawha.

Synneva, the daughter of Abel and Mary Fosen Omvig, was born Jan. 30, 1912, in Kanawha. Synneva was a lifelong resident of Kanawha.

She was united in marriage with Bernard Abbas Sept. 4, 1933, at Kanawha Lutheran Church. To this union four children were born, Harvey, Marjorie, Ronald and Roger.

Synneva was a member of Kanawha Lutheran Church where she was employed as a custodian for many years. Synneva enjoyed embroidering and cross-stitching.

Synneva is survived by two grandsons, Alan Abbas and his wife, Tammy, and their two sons, Aaron and Zachary, and Douglas Abbas and his wife, Misty, and their two sons, Adam and Trevor; three sisters, Ovedia Michelson and her husband, Ernest, Cecelia Roskamp and Mabel Peterson; two brothers, John Omvig and Arthur Omvig and his wife, Marjorie, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernard in 1952; sons, Harvey in 1983, Ronald and Roger in 1949; a daughter, Marjorie in 1958; a sister, Alice Asche in 1985; and two brothers, Joseph in 1986 and Oren in 1973.

OSCAR W. GABEL

ROCKFORD - Oscar W. Gabel, 90, of rural Rockford, died Sunday (May 3, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville, rural Marble Rock. Monsignor Walter V. Brunkan, pastor of St. Mary's, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. A rosary service will begin at 3 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue on hour prior to the Mass at St. Mary's School Parish Hall Wednesday.

Oscar William Gabel was born Nov. 1, 1910, in Ulster Township, Floyd County, the son of Frederick Michael and Margaret Levine (Noss) Gabel. He received his education in rural Floyd County schools and St. Mary's Catholic School of Roseville.

On June 7, 1933, Oscar was united in marriage to Dorothy Marie Slinger.

Mr. Gabel operated a Phillips 66 gas station on Gilbert Street in Charles City where he lived for three years. He moved to a farm south of Charles City and lived there for three years before moving to the farm at which he resided for the past 62 years.

Oscar was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville, where he was an anonymous donor for many of St. Mary's projects. He often lent his talents and labor to beautify the church, cemetery grounds and facilities. He was a member of the Floyd County Farm Bureau and a former member of the Floyd County Board of Review.

Farming was Oscar's life; he enjoyed his hard-working farm life with his wife of 61 and a half years, Dorothy, assisting him. The raising of livestock, hogs and his prized Hereford cattle brought much enjoyment to him. He took pride in making his farmsteads look beautiful. He was honored with the Century Farm Plaque in 1976.

Oscar enjoyed wood working, working in his shop and building and maintaining buildings. He also enjoyed his church, his collie dog "Lady," bird watching, growing and caring for trees, playing "500" card games, automobiles and going for drives. He liked going to McAllen, Texas, for several weeks in the winter.

Oscar was a courageous man who, when called upon, helped out in any manner he could. He enjoyed the time he spent with his children, grandchildren, extended family and many friends.

Those thankful for being a part of Oscar's life include two daughters and their husbands, Doris E. and Jim Murray and Gila J. and Ronald Jorgensen; two sons, Gerald F. Gabel of Rockford and John B Gabel and his wife, Patrice, of Brookings, S.D.; nine grandchildren, Michael Murray of Pukalani, Maui, Hawaii, Joanne O'Reilly of Iowa Falls, Sandra Haller of Loveland, Colo., Lori Mehmen of Orchard, Kathleen Smith of Rockford, Teresa Pettit of Floyd, James Jorgensen of Charles City, Christopher Gable of Reddick, Fla., and Elizabeth Wagner of Crystal Lake, Ill; 15 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandchild; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Duncan of Charles City; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy, who died March 9, 1995; and four brothers, Edgar, Wilbur and Harvey Gabel and Carl Gabel in infancy.
