CHARLES CITY - Kathryn (Mrs. LeRoy) Smith, 80, formerly of 310 Eighth Ave. died Tuesday (Jan. 9, 2001) at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City, with the Rev. Dianne Christopher, senior pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens south of Charles City.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, with the family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the Church.

CHARLES CITY - Johanna (Mrs. Harold) Morgan, 91, of 207 S. Joslin, died Wednesday (Jan. 10, 2001) at her home.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Temple Baptist Church in Charles City, with Pastor Douglas DeFord officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens near Charles City.

JOHN DAVID VANHAAFTEN

BELMOND - Funeral services will be held for John David VanHaaften, 96, of Belmond, at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Calvary Baptist Church in Belmond, with Pastor John Murray officiating. Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Goldfield, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond and one hour prior to services on Friday at the Church.

John David VanHaaften was born Dec. 1, 1904.

He was united in marriage to Bena Louise Duitscher on Dec. 25, 1929, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They farmed near Clarion for a few years and purchased a farm between Clarion and Belmond. They spent 25 years at Lake Cornelia and then moved to Belmond.

John was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church, loved his farming, gardening, and fishing.

John died on Wednesday (Jan. 10, 2001) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond at the age of 96.

He is survived by a daughter, Jalois Crotty and her husband, Larry, of Eldridge, Iowa; a son, Arlin VanHaaften, of Layton, Utah; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 66 years, Bena; son, Verlyn; a granddaughter; three brothers; and four sisters.

GENEVA - Bonnie L. Dodd, 69, of Geneva, died Tuesday (Jan. 9, 2001) at her home.

ERIC RICHARD FIETZ

FOREST CITY - Eric Richard Fietz, 86, of Forest City, died Tuesday (Jan. 9, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Forest City.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Eric Richard Fietz was born to August and Paulina (Mantai) Fietz on Nov. 16, 1914 at Nelson, British Columbia, Canada and was baptized into the Lutheran Church there. The family moved to Stoughton, Saskatchewan when Eric was an infant. He grew up on a farm there, attended rural grade school and town high school and affirmed his baptismal covenant in the German language at Zion Lutheran Church in Stoughton.

He attended Luther College and Academy for his Grade II and Second Year Arts and Science years in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Following the depression, Eric attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa for his junior and senior years. He attended Evangelical Lutheran Seminary (now Trinity) in Columbus, Ohio from 1938 to 1941, graduating with a bachelor of Divinity, and accepted a call to a two-point parish, Sprague-Medical Lake, Wash. Here he married Elsie Repp in 1943 before enlisting in the military services as a chaplain.

During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps at air bases in Texas, Alabama, Wisconsin and New York, securing his discharge in 1946 as a captain. While in Texas he became a naturalized citizen of the United States. During his tour of duty in Wisconsin, the couple settled in Madison, where Eric attended grad school following his military discharge, specializing in English and linguistics.

He accepted a professorship at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn. in 1949. While here, he was recalled into the US Army in 1951 and saw service in the 45th Infantry Division in Korea, and was discharged at Fort Lewis in late 1952.

He served as interim pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pullman, Wash. before rejoining the Concordia faculty in 1953. He was promoted to full professorship here and assumed this rank when he filled a vacancy on Waldorf's staff in 1963 until his retirement in 1980.

Fietz has been active in his church wherever he has lived. He was Superintendent of Sunday Schools at Peace Lutheran Church in Fargo, N.D., filled in as interim pastor in 1957 and served at Immanuel as a member of the church council, catechist and committee member.

He became active in the American Legion following retirement, served as adjutant, commander, finance officer, historian and chaplain of Forest City Post 121, Department of Iowa chaplain for a year.

He headed up Forest City United Fund activities at Waldorf for several years and chaired the 1977 community drive. For some years he coordinated the Meals-On-Wheels effort and was involved in the activities of Toys for Needy Children. He served as president and treasurer of the Kum-Along Senior Citizens Club for several years. He represented Winnebago and Worth Counties as their Older Iowa Legislative member (OIL) from 1983 to 1994.

He served as a volunteer fundraiser in the Mason City Conference of the American Lutheran Church in it's Mission Loan Fund program and area fund drives and in 1993 was recognized as "Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser" by the North Iowa Fund-raising professionals.

In recent years Fietz assisted as secretary-treasurer to the Board of Directors of Forest Haven, Inc, an offshoot of Forester Motor Lodge and helped develop the facility into an assisted-living service. He has, since 1991, acted as chairman and secretary of the Winnebago County Veterans Commission. He was also a member of the local Habitat for Humanity committee.

Eric Fietz is survived by his wife, Elsie, of Forest City; a son, David Fietz, of Council Bluffs; a daughter, Pauline Gregory, of Columbia, S.C.; and four grandchildren, Eric, Chris, Bethany and Andrew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and two sisters.

In lieu of flowers, he asked that memorials be given either to the Fietz Scholarship in English at Waldorf College or to the endowment fund of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

THOMPSON - Lillian Rose Stohr, 79, of Thompson, died Tuesday (Jan. 9, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

RAYMOND G. STARK

RICEVILLE - Raymond G. Stark, 74, of Riceville, passed away Monday (Jan. 8, 2001) at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the United Methodist Church in Riceville, with the Rev. Michael Carey officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville and one hour prior to services on Friday at the Church.

Raymond was born on Aug. 22, 1926 in Riceville to Harvey and Marion Torney Stark. He attended local country schools.

On Sept. 3, 1955 he was united in marriage to Loretta Jordan at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Chester, Iowa. To this union four children were born.

Raymond was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the U.S. Army, a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the Second (Indian Head) Division Association, and the Korean War Veteran's Alliance.

Survivors include his wife,

Loretta, of Riceville; one son, Gary and his wife, Lynne, of Estes Park, Colo.; three daughters, Connie and her husband, Duane Losee, of Mason City, Kay and her husband, Larry Dose, of Rochester, Minn., and Sandy and her husband, Gary Tuttle, of Ames. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, Raymond and Ryan Garza, Sarah and Patrick Dose, Ben, Jackie and Jessie Tuttle, and Cameron, Alicia, Kyra and Tanner Stark; and one sister, Mrs. Warren (Mildred) Matteson, of Adams, Minn.

Raymond was preceded in death by his mother in 1968; his father in 1976; two sisters, Merle in 1922 and Eleanor in 1925; and one brother, Glendon (Ted) Stark in 1991.

CHARLES CITY - Ralph Bryant, 95, formerly of 3231 190th St., died Tuesday (Jan. 9, 2001) at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Ralph Emory Bryant was born Sept. 10, 1905 at Mason City, the son of Seth and Lois Gray Bryant. He graduated from the Mason City High School and from Iowa State.

On Sept. 23, 1930, he was united in marriage to Marjory Bouck at Mason City. They farmed north of Mason City moving to the Charles City area in 1956. Ralph attended the First Wesleyan Church.

Living family members include three sons and their wives, Dennis and Dolly, of Mason City, Jerry and Vi, of Tallahassee, Fla., and Seth and Margaret, of Charles City; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife in 1982; a daughter, Jean Boekemier; a granddaughter, Delores Drillen; and a sister, Helen Thompson.

ROBERT K. GRAVES

OSAGE - Robert K. Graves, 67, of 2602 West Glenrosa Ave., Phoenix, Ariz., died Tuesday (Jan. 2, 2001) at his home following a lengthy illness.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage. A memorial service will follow at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Rick Magstadt officiating. Burial will be in Osage Cemetery.

Robert was born May 8, 1933, in Osage, the son of Emmit and Grace (Canny) Graves. He graduated from Osage High School and served in the United States Army.

Robert was united in marriage to Judith Williams on May 2, 1960, in Rapid City, S.D. They lived in Osage and Mitchell before moving to Phoenix in 1987. He was retired.

Survivors include his wife, Judith, of Phoenix; a daughter, Lynda Colton and her husband, Jack, and and their child, Samuel, of Batavia, Ill; son, Keith Graves and his wife Barbara, of Grand Mound, and their children Jeff Minner of Clinton, Shai Lemke and her husband, Mark and their son, Brady and daughter, Sara, all of Clinton; and son, Mark Graves, and his wife Betty and their child, Jacob, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

CHARLOTTE GENEVA WILLSHER

NORA SPRINGS -Charlotte Geneva Willsher, 90, died Saturday (Jan. 6, 2001) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church, Nora Springs, with the Rev. Richard Pippert and the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery in Nora Springs.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, and one hour prior to the service time at the church Friday.

Charlotte Geneva Willsher was born on June 1, 1910, in Kalo, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Jessie (Arledge) Hutchinson. She received her education in the rural country schools in the Otho, Iowa, area.

She was united in marriage to George Willsher on Nov. 27, 1929, in Mason City. He preceded her in death in 1983.

In 1941 the family moved to Nora Springs where they spent the rest of their lives. Charlotte began selling Amyway products in the 1950s and became a direct distributor in the 1960s.

She enjoyed flowers and gardening, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren.

She was a member and very active in the Methodist Church in Nora Springs and held offices in various phases of church activities. She also was a member of the Rebekah Lodge since the late 1940s and was a Noble Grand in 1955.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Majorie Bordwell of Sun Lakes, Ariz., Ron Willsher and his wife, Gen, of Fort Meyers, Fla., Bob Willsher and his wife, Arlene, of Nora Springs, Janet Wright and her husband, Larry, of Northwood, and Marcia Rowley and her husband, Frank, of Princeton; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Wayne Hutchinson of Fort Dodge; and other relatives and friends.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a grandson, Todd Willsher; a son-in-law, Jerry Bordwell; a sister, Cecil Robert; and two brothers, Roy and Ross Hutchinson.

CHARLES CITY - Lila (Mrs. Earl) Anderson, 100, formerly of 902 Clinton St., Charles City, died Tuesday (Jan. 2, 2001) at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Per Lila's request, her body was donated to the University of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

JOHN A. BREEN

BELMOND - John A. Breen, age 88, formerly of Blue Earth, died on Monday (Jan. 1, 2001) at The Belmond Care Center in Belmond, of cancer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. on Friday at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Blue Earth, Minn,. with Father John Ozbun officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Blue Earth.

Visitation time will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at Patton Funeral Home in Blue Earth.

John was born Sept. 16, 1912, at Vail, Iowa, the son of John J. and Sarah (Turner) Breen.

He was raised and educated in Truman, having graduated from Truman High School in 1931. He farmed briefly before serving four years in the Civil Conservation Corps near McGregor.

He was married to Marian E. Frailey on Sept. 16, 1937. He moved to Fairmont and started working for Montgomery Wards, which lead him to Pipestone and later to Moline, Ill. In 1946 he moved to Monmouth, Ill., where he managed two stores for the Brown-Lynch-Scott Hardware Co.

In 1949 he came to Blue Earth, Minn., where he purchased the Western Auto Store, which soon became the Breen Our Own Hardware Store. The store, now called Breen's True Value, still continues on Blue Earth's Main Street, and is the longest operating business on Main Street in Blue Earth. John retired from the store in 1989.

He was a longtime member of the SS, Peter and Paul Catholic Church where he was active in the Knights of Columbus for more than 50 years, serving as a Grand Knight.

He also served on the Blue Earth Chamber of Commerce, Toastmasters, United Hands Hospice - where he was a board member - and the Blue Earth Light and Water Board for many years. He had also presented the "Barter Time" radio program on KBEW radio for many years.

John is survived by his wife, Marian, of Belmond, Iowa; son, John Breen and his wife, Sue, of New Brighton, Minn.; son, Ken Breen and his wife, Marlys, of Blue Earth, Minn.; daughter, Sharon Baum and her husband, Don, of Belmond; daughter, Debra Abel and her husband, DuWayne, of Belmond; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Loretta Harris.

BELMOND - Edith L. Soma, 103, of Belmond, died Monday (Jan. 1, 2001) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

CONCORD, Calif. - Patricia Jo Ann Clark passed away Tuesday (Dec. 26, 2000) at the age of 72. Born in Iowa, she was a long-time resident of Pittsburg and Concord, Calif.

She is survived by her son, David Smid; her daughter, Carol Renwald; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was a 25-year data systems specialist at the Concord Naval Weapons Center in Concord, Calif.

MASON CITY - Jeanne E. Fraser, 75, Mason City, died Monday (Jan. 1, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit of North Iowa in Mason City.

Jeanne was born July 24, 1925, at Mason City, the daughter of Godfrid and Marie Margaret (Miller) Stricker. Jeanne graduated from high school in Wesley. She attended La James Beauty College in Mason City.

Jeanne farmed with her husband, Kenneth, in the Algona area. Among her interests she enjoyed sewing and cooking. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Jeanne is survived by her son, Troy K. Fraser of Meservey; three daughters, Barbara J. Poppe of Mason City, Jacqueline A. Pearson and her husband, Thomas, of Covington, Ga. and Connie J. Barlow and her husband, Steve, of Mason City; one sister, Eleanor Bixler of Mason City; and one brother, Robert Stricker and his wife, Sally, of Mason City; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

LELAND - Thelma M. Rusley, 78, of Leland, died Sunday (Dec. 31, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Leland, with the Rev. Bill Peters officiating. Burial will be at Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery.

Thelma M. Rusley was born March 22, 1922, in rural Washington County, Iowa, the daughter of M. "Ray" and Verna (Larsen) Perry. She attended rural schools in Washington and Hancock counties. She graduated from Forest City High School in 1940.

Later, she graduated from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, and then attended Drake University where she studied music and education.

She taught in rural schools in Hancock and Winnebago County. She also taught many area students private piano and accordion lessons for many years.

Thelma was united in marriage to Kermit Rusley on June 28, 1950, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. Together they farmed near Leland. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in July, with many family and friends in a joyous event.

She was very active in Winnebago Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday School and Bible School and directing many musical productions. She was 4-H leader and was active in several local clubs.

She loved her family, gardening, canning and making jam. She also took great pride in having traveled to all 50 states.

Thelma is survived by her husband, Kermit of Leland; one son, David and his wife, Rita Rusley, of Cedar Falls; one daughter, Diane Pauk of Verona, Wis.; four granddaughters, Michelle, Danielle and Stephanie Pauk of Verona, Wis., and Rachael Rusley of Cedar Falls; one brother, Vernon and his wife, Lila, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and two sisters, Geraldine Anderson of Hawthorne, Calif., and Syble McKenzie of Safford, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Marjorie Perry.

Curtis Einer Christensen was born on Feb. 4, 1930, in Garner, the son of Einer and Matilda (Paulson) Christensen. He attended and received his education in the rural country schools in Hancock County, graduating from Ventura High School in 1947. He also attended and graduated from Hamilton Business College in Mason City in 1948.

On Dec. 27, 1948, he was inducted into the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict until his honorable discharge on Aug. 15, 1951.

He was united in marriage to Betty McKee on Aug. 9, 1952, at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church in Osage. Curtis worked for the Northern Natural Gas Company, which is now called Enron Company, in Ventura for 37 years until his retirement. After his retirement he worked as an insurance adjuster for the Cerro Gordo Mutual Insurance Company in Mason City for a short time.

He enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, playing bridge, was a high school and college sports enthusiast, he also enjoyed children, his coffee group at the Deli, and spending time with his wife, Betty, at the beach in Florida, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and grandchildren.

He was a member of the Ventura Gun Club, was the first city clerk in Ventura, Booster Club, Little League baseball coach, and was on the committees in Ventura for a new public library and gymnasium.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Betty Christensen of Ventura; four children, Douglas Christensen and his wife, Cindy, of Cedar Falls, Thomas Christensen and his wife, Gracie, of Houston, Texas, Richard Christensen and his wife, Tracy, of Cedar Rapids, and Susan Clark and her husband, Bradley, of Clive, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, Heidi, Seth, Camille, Peter, Scott, Alex, Chad, Austin and Drew Christensen, and Zoey and Maggie Clark; a sister, Maxine Sommerfield of Mason City; and a brother, Max Christensen and his wife, Mary, of Ventura; as well as other relatives and many friends.

MARYLOU O'GORMAN

MASON CITY - MaryLou O'Gorman, 69, of 302 Second St. N.E., Mason City, died Thursday (Dec. 28, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services of the casual nature, befitting her style, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Jan. 3, 2001, at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with the Rev. Jeffrey Dahlin of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Cremation was conducted at Cremation Services of North Iowa. The family will conduct final resting services at a later date.

MaryLou's interesting life started with her birth on May 8, 1931, in Mason City, the daughter of Leo and Bertha (Davis) O'Gorman. She attended school at Mason City High School.

She had special talents that she used in reading Tarot Cards for 30 years, traveling all over the country. She also assisted several law enforcement agencies in locating missing children while she lived in Texas. Her last service was as an armed guard for the Grand Prairie Horse Racing Track. She often traveled to psychic fairs.

On Nov. 10, 1998, she moved to Mason City from the Dallas, Fort Worth area. MaryLou had a classy, flamboyant way of dressing and being meticulous in her appearance, even when she entered the nursing home.

MaryLou leaves two children, her daughter, Cheryl Garfin of Mason City, and her son, Jim Garfin of Daytona Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren Jonathan and Justina Garfin, both of Mason City; John Garfin, of Largo, Fla., Blake Garfin, of Charlotte, S.C, and Sherri Garfin, of Long Island, N. .Y; and a half brother, Mark O'Gorman, of Mason City.

VENTURA - Marcia J. Shaffer, 84, Ventura, died Monday (Jan. 1, 2001) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Marcia was born June 9, 1916, in Mason City, the daughter of Pearl Morrow and Pearl Mae (Oxley) Hickok. She graduated from Ventura High School in 1934. She attended Iowa State Teachers College and taught elementary school in Dows and Coulter, Iowa, for 3 years.

She married Bill Shaffer on June 29, 1939, at her parents' home south of Ventura. They moved to Clear Lake where they started their family and lived there until 1955. Then they moved back to the family farm and lived there until 1998.

Marcia was active in helping with many aspects of farm life, gardening, selling eggs, raising lambs, unloading grain wagons, and preparing many group meals. Marcia moved to the Meadows until 1999, moving then to the Oakwood Care Center.

She was a lifelong member of the First Congregational Church and taught Sunday school there in her younger years. She was also a 50-year member of the Mother's Study Club.

Marcia is survived by her sons, Larry A. Shaffer and his wife, Kathy, of Ventura, and Arlan L. Shaffer and his wife, Cathy, of Porterville, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Jennifer Shaffer of Monticello, and Dylan Shaffer of Cedar Falls.

Marcia was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Bill, in 1978.

DIANE MARIE JAMTGAARD

MASON CITY - Diane Marie Jamtgaard, 50, 13 N. York Ave., died Sunday (Dec. 31,2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, following a long battle with cancer.

A funeral Mass for Diane Jamtgaard will be celebrated at noon today at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City, with Father Carl A. Ries officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

Visitation was held Tuesday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

Diane Marie Zeran Jamtgaard was born Nov. 2, 1950, in Charles City, the daughter of John and Marlys (Zeran) Arends. She was raised in Rockford and graduated from the Rudd Rockford Marble Rock Community High School in 1969. Diane continued her education and received her Associate of Arts Degree from the North Iowa Area Community College.

On Jan. 22, 1972, she was united in marriage to Nicholas Lamoreux. The couple later divorced. She then was united in marriage on May 4, 1985, to Mike Jamtgaard. The couple later divorced.

Diane worked for the A.C. Nielsen Company in Mason City for two years following her graduation from NIACC. After her first marriage, Diane became employed at the former Iowa State Liquor Store in Clear Lake. She then went to work at the Sperry Corporation in Clear Lake for 10 years.

Following Sperry's closing, Diane returned to college and earned a BA degree in accounting from Buena Vista University. Diane then worked at Minnesota Rubber for one year. For the past five and a half years, Diane was the office manager at the Odd Fellows Retirement Home in Mason City.

Diane was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. She enjoyed going to movies, traveling and spending time with her children, grandchildren and family members. She was also noted in her family for her love of chocolate.

Those thankful for sharing Diane's life include her three children, Nicole Lamoreux and her friend, David Hurst, of Mason City, Patrick Lamoreux and his wife, Danielle, of Fort Stewart, Ga., and Joseph Jamtgaard of Mason City; her father, John Arends of Rockford; four sisters and their husbands, Kathy and Terry Young of Manly, Joan and Brian Hendrikson of Clear Lake, Jean and Jim Ackermann of Blaine, Minn., and Karen and Jerry Schlader of Rockford; two brothers, John Arends and his wife, Rochelle, of Rockford and Keith Arends and his friend, Monica Breaux, of Mesquite, Texas; four grandchildren, Leah Fistler, Lyndsey Hurst, Tracie-Lynn Lamoreux and Joshua Pruim, as well as a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Diane is preceded in death by her mother, Marlys, who died Aug. 25, 1999, her grandparents who were instrumental in her upbringing, Mildred and Russell Zeran, and two nephews.

Mary Elizabeth Thompson was born on Nov. 9, 1915, in Rockford, the daughter of Earl and Edith Kissell and later stepdaughter of Art Awe. She attended and received her education in the Rockford school system.

Mary was united in marriage to Ray Thompson on May 3, 1931, in Mason City. He preceded her in death on May 10, 1995. After their marriage they lived in Mason City until 1948, when they moved to Belmond.

While living in Belmond, Mary cooked at the Town House Café and Aldeson's Café. In 1968, they moved to Ventura where they owned and operated Elm Bend Resort and Café on Clear Lake.

Mary became known for her cinnamon rolls, which she loved to share with her children and grandchildren. They moved back to Belmond for a few years before moving back to Ventura in 1976, where she still lived.

Mary and her husband, Ray, shared a passion for fishing, snowmobiling and going to the park. Mary loved to work with her flowers in the house and the garden and feed the birds - a joy she shared with her grandson, Jon, from Australia.

As an avid Hawkeye fan, she never missed a game. It was a treat when her granddaughter, Kelli, would come out and play cards with her. In her quiet times you would find Mary crocheting or playing her handheld solitaire game.

OSAGE - Ruth A. Earles, 79, of Osage, died Monday (Jan. 1, 2001) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage of natural causes.

Ruth was born March 21, 1921, in Kanawha, Iowa, the daughter of George and Anna (Albright) Riekens.

Ruth was united in marriage to Hurshel L. Earles on Aug. 22, 1937, at Kanawha. The couple farmed near Crystal Lake, near Cresco, and at Little Cedar before moving to Osage in 1967.

Ruth was a former Cub Scout den mother, and was known and admired for her crochet and craft work. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at the First United Methodist Church, 819 Main St., Osage, with the Rev. Karen Nichols Dungan and the Rev. Robert Barrick officiating. Interment will be in the Little Cedar Cemetery in Little Cedar.

OSAGE - Ruth Louise Meerdink, 84, of Osage, died Thursday (Jan. 11, 2001) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage. She was born on June 19, 1916 at the farm home east of Orchard, the daughter of William and Emma (Kneibehler) Ford. She attended grade school in West Lincoln Township and graduated from Osage High School in 1934.

She married Harold A. Meerdink on Jan. 10, 1940, at Mason City. They farmed the family farm until 1980 and then moved to Osage in 1985.

Ruth was active in the Osage Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, where she assisted in children's work and Women's Missionary Fellowship. She was instrumental in starting and maintaining an excellent church library until the time of her death.

Ruth particularly enjoyed expressing her gift of hospitality in hosting guest missionaries who were speaking at the church. She was also an active member of the community Cedarside Birthday Club.

Ruth will be remembered as a caring, supportive mother who enjoyed her family, reading, crocheting, knitting, needlepoint and gardening. She was also very involved in working on the family genealogy.

The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Osage, with the Rev. Rick Magstadt officiating. Interment will be in the Orchard Cemetery.

PORTLAND, Ore. - The funeral for Loren William Estal was held Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Beaverton, Ore. Interment was at Old Scotch Church Cemetery.

Mr. Estal, the son of William Garfield and Ida Bernice (Tuffree) Estal, was born Oct. 31, 1920, in Phrimgar, Iowa, and died Tuesday (Jan. 9, 2001) in Portland, Ore. He graduated from Rock Falls High School in Rock Falls.

He married Frances Anderson on March 7, 1942, in Nora Springs, and he dairy farmed for 20 years. They moved to Colorado in 1965, where he worked as a federal meat inspector for 22 years. He also worked for the state of Colorado as a meat inspector of 15 years.

He enjoyed bird and squirrel watching and working with antique cars. He was a member of the Gloria Christi Lutheran Church in Greeley, Colo., and attended the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Beaverton, Ore.

The family suggests remembrances to the Gloria Christi Lutheran Church in Greeley, or the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Beaverton, Ore.

HAMPTON - Gerald Frank Laudner, 72, died Friday (Jan. 12, 2001) at Hampton Health Care Center.

Gerald Frank Laudner was born on June 11, 1928, in Butler County, Iowa, to John and Julia Murphy Laudner.

Gerald worked at Acess in Hampton where he enjoyed woodworking, latch hooking rugs and using his capabilities to the fullest. Gerald had a terrific memory and enjoyed receiving stuffed toys at Christmas time.

He is survived by his brother, Karl and his wife, Marlys, of Rockwell; his sisters, Alta and her husband, Will Wartburton, of Des Moines, Berniece and her husband, Art Koenigsberg, of Sheffield, Wilma and her husband, Hans Jorgensen, of Mason City, Beryl and her husband, Earl Jorgensen, of Mason City, and Eva and her husband, Raymond Cheever, of Columbus Junction; and many nieces and nephews.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one nephew and one great-nephew.

CHARLES CITY - Alan L. Koehler, 52, of 2526 Woodland Dr., died Saturday (Jan. 13, 2001) at his home.

Alan Lee Koehler was born Aug. 27, 1948, at Charles City, the son of Roland and Evonne (Carter) Koehler. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1966 and from Iowa State University in Ames in 1970.

On July 5, 1975, he and Sharon Mesch were married at Austin, Minn.

He worked for 10 years at White Farm Equipment Corp., worked on his uncle's farm for 12 years, sold feed for two years and for 14 years drove refrigerated semi for Wilson Trucking of Rochester, Minn.

Alan was in 4-H, FFA, and was involved in agriculture in college. He liked to camp and play cards and go to Country Fest in Wisconsin every year. He loved country music and going dancing, enjoyed Fan Fair, Nashville, and loved to take the grandchildren camping and watching the Green Bay Packers football.

Living family members include his wife, Sharon, of Charles City; three daughters and their husbands, Michelle and Andy Clemen of Manchester, Sherrie and Dan Zieman of Rockwell and Christina and Jeff Hackman of Charles City; a son and his wife, Ross and Shannon Koehler of Floyd; 12 grandchildren, Ashley, Adam, Kaleigh and Samantha Clemen, Jess, Jacob and Mindy Zeiman, Christopher, and Brianna, Katelyn, Cassandra and Shana Hackman; and two brothers, Steve Koehler of Nora Springs and Dennis and Connie Kochler of Waverly.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents; an uncle, Merlyn Koehler; a father-in-law, Earl Mesch; and a great niece, Amanda McDonald.

Nancy Lee Barkema was born on Nov. 3, 1950, in Fort Dodge, the daughter of Leland T. and Eleanor (Payne) Seeberger. She was 9 years old when her family moved to Mason City. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1969. She had a long career at Northwestern Bell.

On Dec. 1, 1984, Nancy was united in marriage to Dean Barkema in Mason City.

The past seven years she worked as a consultant for Creative Memories. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, a church council member, youth leader and a member of Beta Sigma Phi. She was active with the North Iowa Girl Scout Council as a long-time leader and service unit manager at Madison school.

She enjoyed reading, studying genealogy, collecting Boyds Bears and Cherished Teddies and exploring Iowa teahouses with friends.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Dean Barkema of Mason City; a daughter, Laura Lee Barkema at home; a stepson, Jim Barkema and his wife, Lisa, of Mason City; a sister, Sue Neufeld of Colorado Springs, Colo.; her mother-in-law, Viola Barkema of Belmond; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents and father-in-law, Junior Barkema.

JOHN HAYWARD

CLEAR LAKE - John Verner Hayward, 84, died Saturday (Jan. 13, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

John Verner Hayward was born July 7, 1916, in Davenport, the son of Verner E. and Kate Mary (Ford) Hayward. He attended Davenport schools, graduating from high school in 1934. During high school he was prominent on debate teams, excelled in athletics and received academic honors. He belonged to a high school men's fraternity and was a member of the Davenport Country Club's Velie Cup Championship Golf Team.

John attended Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, and graduated with a business degree in 1938. While there he was a secretary of the campus YMCA, a charter member of the "Friar's" Honor Society and a member of the Grinnell Men's Honor G Club. He earned seven major letters in track, basketball and football.

In 1939 John married his college sweetheart, Adelia (Dee) Woodward on June 24 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Mason City. Dee is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. L. R. Woodward who resided in Mason City and a 1939 graduate of Grinnell College.

The Haywards made their home in Davenport where their four children were born and John took over the family business, Davenport Ladder Company. In 1955 the family moved to Estherville where John was president of Northern Lumber Company. The family moved to Mason City in 1957 and John began work as a contractor. Summers were spent at Dodges Point Beach on Clear Lake. The Clear Lake home became their permanent residence in 1968.

While living in Clear Lake, John became an active member of the Clear Lake Yacht Club and served as head judge and race officer for many years. He was also president of the Clear Lake Arts Council for three years during which time Art in the Park became an annual event. In addition he served on the board of the Clear Lake Fire Museum, was a member of the United Methodist Church and served as secretary of the Clear Lake Rotary Club until his death.

John will be remembered for his devotion to his family and his commitment to the community. He contributed generously of his time to his church, various scouting programs, civic organizations and the Rotary Club. He was an avid sports fan who competed with honor on and off the field.

He is survived by his wife, Adelia (Dee) W. Hayward; three children, Stephen V. Hayward and Donna (Puerto Penasco, Mexico), Alan L. Hayward and Becky (Mason City), and Lynne M. Bombinski and Greg (Phoenix, Ariz.); grandchildren, Suzanne Hayward, Libby (Hayward) Thivierge, John Bombinski and Jimmy Bombinski; and great-grandchildren, Lauren Collier, Jade Collier and Taylor Bombinski.

John was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, William Hayward; a sister, Katheryn (Hayward) Furrow; and a son, John A. Hayward in 1965.

Memorial services celebrating John's life will be held at 5 p.m. Monday at United Methodist Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.

The family will greet friends prior to the service beginning at 4 p.m. at the church. The celebration will continue in the fellowship hall after the service so family and friends may gather to share memories and refreshments.

ROCKWELL - Phyllis M. (Mrs. Martin) Treston, 77, of 303 N. Third St., died Friday (Jan. 12, 2001) at Mercy Health Center-North Iowa.

Phyllis was the daughter of Martin Joseph Eischeid and Pauline Germann Eischeid. She was born and lived in Wittemore until 1939 when her family moved to Webster City. Phyllis graduated from Hamilton School of Commerce in Mason City and worked for Standard Oil in Mason City.

She married Martin Dennis (Denny) Treston, son of Martin M. Treston and Susan Lucinda (Lou) Gibson Treston at Fort Dodge on Feb 12, 1947. They spent the first few years of their married life in Mason City and then moved to Rockwell, Denny's hometown. Phyllis was the town clerk of Rockwell for many years.

In addition, through the years she was very active both in the Rockwell community and the Sacred Heart Parish. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Guild, the American Legion Auxiliary, the 500 Club and the Rockwell Public Library board.

Phyllis was a devout Catholic and attended daily Mass when she was able. She also enjoyed playing cards, reading books and her little dog, Snookums. She took great delight in her children and her grandchildren and loved spending time with them.

Left to cherish her memory are her three daughters, Sherry Treston and her partner, Carolyn Stanek, of Hinsdale, Ill., and their children, Tai Li Stanek and Kai Mei Treston, Shirley Severson and her husband, Vance, of La Porte City and their children, Adam, Alicia and Andrew, and Sheila Boyle and her husband, Jay, of Vancouver, Wash., and their children, Jacob and Aaron; her sister, June Cone of Independence; her brother, Gerald (Jerry) Otto Eischeid and his wife, Darlene, of Urbandale; her sister-in-law, Margaret McMonagle and her husband, Cecil, of Mason City; many nieces and nephews; and many good friends and neighbors.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Denny; their daughter, Mary Denice; her parents; and one sister in infancy.

Walter was born Oct. 24, 1903, in Minden, Iowa, the son of Godfrey and Margaret (Krebs) Muhlstein. He attended school in Minden and moved to Rockwell at the age of 16.

Walter married Lydia Beisel on April 9, 1927, in Mason City.

Walter was employed by Jacob B. Decker & Sons Meat Packing Plant for nearly 40 years, retiring in 1968.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and enjoyed playing cards and fishing.

Walter is survived by his five children, Walter Muhlstein Jr. and his wife, Miriam, Donald Muhlstein and his wife, Sharon, Dixie Harris and her husband, Charles, Donna Meyer and her husband, Edwin, and Richard Muhlstein and his wife, Trudy, all of Mason City; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
