CATHERINE L. ASBE

MASON CITY - Catherine L. Asbe, 69, of 930 N. Fillmore, died Thursday (Dec. 28, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. John 'Jack' Gannett officiating.

There will be no visitation; her body has been cremated. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa in the name of Catherine L. Asbe.

Catherine was born on June 19, 1931, in Mason City, the daughter of Charles R. and Blanche C. (Erickson) Whitney. She graduated from Adams High School, Adams, Minn.

She moved back to Mason City in 1949 where she met Donald H. Asbe. They were wed on Nov. 21, 1954.

She then furthered her education at the school of cosmetology in Mason City and received her cosmetology license. She owned and operated Cathy's Beauty Salon for more than 28 years. She had many faithful, returning customers and always impressed everyone she met with her personal kindness.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the VFW Auxiliary. In her spare time she enjoyed sewing, quilting, upholstering furniture, cooking and cutting her grandchildren's hair. She was also known for her open ear, friendly smile and her bottomless cup of coffee.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Donald H. Asbe of Mason City; her children, Kenneth E. Asbe and his wife, Julie, of Clear Lake, Bryan K. Asbe and his wife, Lisa, of Mason City, and Donna L. Lockrem and her husband, Rich, of Woodbury, Minn.; and seven grandchildren, Erin, Eric and Michael Asbe, Jason and Brittany Asbe, and Justin and Jordan Lockrem - "We Love You Grandma!" She is also survived by her sisters, Elaine Wiebrand and her husband, Vern, of Arizona and Cordelia Whitney of Minneapolis, Minn.; her brother, Dean 'Rex' Whitney and his wife, Delores, of Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews.

Catherine was preceded in death by both parents, Charles and Blanche, and a brother, Roger Whitney. Also left behind is her loving pooch, Tinker, who provided extra love and joy to her busy life.

MASON CITY - Doris E. Cormey, 76, of 512 S. Broad, Plymouth, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Paul Schaefer of the Plymouth Road Bible Church officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be directed to the Doris E. Cormey Memorial Fund.

Doris was born on March 6, 1924, on the family farm north of Hanford, Iowa, the daughter of George S. and Amanda (Banken) Renshaw. Doris attended grade school at Owen Township and later graduated from Mason City High School in 1942.

In 1944 Doris was united in marriage with Kent K. Nichols. They resided in Mason City, later moving to Phoenix, Ariz. Two sons were born to this union; however, the marriage did not survive.

Doris relocated with her sons to California where she later married Henry Cormey. Two daughters were born. The family later moved to Mason City where Doris raised the family after her divorce.

Doris worked several years at Coca-Cola Bottling Company and for 20 years at Libby Owens Ford Glass until retirement.

Doris enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed her pets, gardening and bird watching. Doris always had a smile for anyone she met in the course of each day. She was truly a gentle spirit who believed giving was better than receiving.

Those blessed by her presence in their lives include two sons, Alan L. Nichols of Davenport and Steven K. Nichols of Plymouth; two daughters, Phyllis J. Clark and her husband, Alan, of Apple Valley, Wash., and Linda S. Cormey and her friend and companion, Steve Carroll of Mason City; special cousins, Iris Alitz and her husband, Harley, of Mason City, and Marilyn Nichols of Davenport; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

ROCKFORD - Gordia K. Ehlers, 77, died Saturday (Dec. 30, 2000) at USA Health Care Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Rockford, with the Rev. Murley Severtson officiating. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery, Austin, Minn.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 Tuesday at Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 W. Main St., Rockford. Visitation will resume from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and again one hour prior to the service at the church Wednesday.

NANCY L. HUGO

MASON CITY - Nancy L. Hugo, 61, of 922 N. Carolina Ave., died Saturday (Dec. 30, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Kathy Graves, chaplin at Hospice of North Iowa officiating. Following the service the body will be cremated.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and Tuesday morning until the time of the service.

Memorials may directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Nancy was born Nov. 18, 1939, in Mason City. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1958 and LaJames Beauty School in 1959.

She married Gunther Hugo on July 17, 1960, in Mason City. Nancy worked at Florimel Beauty Salon for a few years then opened a salon in her home which she operated for 12 years. Nancy worked as an accountant/bookkeeper for Hugo Builders since 1975.

She loved spending time with her friends and family as much as she loved the quiet and solitude of her backyard where she always watched and fed the animals. Her time of much love, peace and labor showed up in her beautiful flower gardens which we all enjoyed.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Gunther Hugo, of Mason City; her son, Bruce Hugo of Zion, Ill.; her daughter, Julie Hugo of Urbandale; her parents, Clifford and Arlene Alitz of Mason City; her brother, Jack Risacher and his wife, Nancy, of North Andover, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.

HARLEY C. RANSOM

MASON CITY - Harley C. Ransom, 100, of 222 S. Pierce, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000) at USA Health Care, Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Richard 'Rick' Eichenlaub of First Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home Wednesday.

Memorials may be directed to First Christian Church.

Harley was born Feb. 22, 1900, in Mason City, the son of James Harley and Daisy M. (VanNote) Ransom. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1918.

In 1919 Harley went to work for his father in the cigar shop and billiard-room business. Harley owned and operated Ransom's Cigar Store for many years, retiring in 1965.

He married Annabelle Rutledge on Nov. 3, 1926, in Mason City.

Harley was a member of the First Christian Church, a 50-year member of Harding Masonic Lodge No. 649 A.F. & A.M., El Kahir Shrine Temple, York Rite, and was a 50-year member of the Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. No. 375.

Harley is survived by two sons, Bob Ransom and his wife, Donna, of Mason City and Dr. Jim Ransom and his wife, Marcia, of Topeka, Kan.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Harley was preceded in death by his wife, Annabelle in 1974, and two sisters, Merle and Dorothy.

EDNA ALICE PEIL

ALEXANDER - Edna A. (Wiebke) Peil, 75, died Dec. 22, 2000, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 27, at First Reformed Church in Alexander, with the Rev. Robert Ford officiating. Burial was in Alexander Cemetery in Alexander.

Visitation was held on Tuesday at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

Edna was born May 31, 1925, in Butler County, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Bovine (Franken) Wiebke.

Edna married Willard K. Peil on Oct. 15, 1946, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Vilmar. They lived on a farm three miles east of Alexander until December of 1969. They then moved to Alexander where she resided until her death.

Edna was a housewife and mother. She also worked as custodian and cook for an elementary school in Alexander, then in an egg-processing plant in Alexander. She worked five years as a nurse's aid at the Dows Care Center and the last 24 years at the Belmond Health Care Center.

She was an active member of the First Reformed Church of Alexander where she was involved in RCW. She was previously a 4-H leader and helped supervise the 4-H food stand during the Franklin County Fair. She took great pride in her African violets and other plants that adorned her home.

Edna took great pride in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her daughters, Polliann Carlson of Bussey and Barbara and her husband, Britton, of Ackley; two sons, Charles and his wife, Jean, of Belmond and Loran of Alexander; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lois Koester of Allison and Edith Kolthoff of New Hampton; and one brother, Clifford Wiebke of Nashua.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willard K.; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Peil; one son-in-law, John Carlson; one sister, Wilma Lumley; one brother, Willard Wiebke; and one brother and one sister in infancy.

MASON CITY - Diane Maric Jamtgaard, 50, of 13 N. York, died Sunday (Dec. 31, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon on Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Carl A. Ries as celebrant.

VERNON E. HARRIS

KENSETT - Vernon E. Harris, 71, died Saturday (Dec. 30, 2000) at his home in rural Kensett.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St., Manly, with Intern Pastor Lynn Frank of First Lutheran Church, Northwood, officiating. Burial will be at Kensett Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Tabbert-Hollatz American Legion Post 616 from Grafton.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Vern was born on Sept. 12, 1929, in Hampton, the son of Raymond LeRoy and Elsie (Kruse) Harris. He was baptized into the Lutheran Church. After graduating from Sheffield High School in 1948 he worked on the family farm.

Vern was united in marriage to Judith Calgaard on June 10, 1951, in Joice.

In 1952 he was drafted into the United States Army and served during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Manly and worked as a mechanic for Harry Steffensen's Garage and then at the Fullerton Lumberyard.

Vern returned to farming in 1954 and in 1963 purchased the farm near Grafton where he lived and worked until the time of his passing. Vern entered semi-retirement in 1992, but continued to do carpentry work for Art White during the summers and made many wood projects for her family.

He was also a member of the Grafton American Legion.

Vern is survived by his wife, Judy; six children and their spouses, Bonnie and Jerry Charlson of Leland, Sue and Dean Cowell of Kensett, Steve Harris and Bob Harris, both of Mason City, Kathy and Stephen Marshall of West Liberty, and Linda and George Kauffman of Northwood; 11 grandchildren, Tammie Dickens and her husband, Jason, Wendy Conover, Jason Cowell, Angie, Brian and Nicole Charlson, Megan, Sara and Jacob Marshall, Tiffany Harris, and Joshua Kauffman; two great-grandchildren, Mercedes and Kylie Dickens; and two sisters, Leilah Miller of Austin, Minn., and Irma Rae Harris of Mason City.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ralph Harris; a sister and brother, Oda Arlene Harris and Dale Harris, in infancy; a sister-in-law, Esther Harris; and a brother-in-law, Hank Miller.

MASON CITY - Glenn N. Sandy Jr., 79, died Saturday (Dec. 30, 2000) at Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with Pastor David Anderson officiating.

Glenn was born Feb. 27, 1921, in Portland, Iowa, the son of Glenn and Cleo (White) Sandy. He attended high school in Mason City and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

After his discharge, Glenn returned to Mason City where he worked in heavy construction for many years before retiring.

Glenn loved spending time with his family above all. He also enjoyed playing bingo and cards.

Glenn is survived by his wife, Hannah, of Mason City; two sons, Kim Sandy of Mason City and Rodell Sandy of San Damis, Calif.; one daughter, Sharon Nelson of Basset; three stepdaughters, Kathy Smith of Mason City, Carla Colombo of Mason City and Vickie Baumann of Manly; two stepsons, Edward Ries of Mason City and Larry Ries of Nora Springs; one brother, Rodell Sandy of Minneapolis, Minn.; one sister, Ruth Rogers of Mason City; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Robert L. Theiss, 46, of St. Joseph, Mo., died Sunday (Dec. 31, 2000) at home.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Meierhoffer Family Funeral Service, St. Joseph, Mo. Interment will be at the Oak Lawns Cemetery in Emmons, Minn. at a later date.

SHEFFIELD - Funeral services for Helen G. Koester will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at the Grace Baptist Church in Sheffield, with the Rev. Bruce Rulapaugh officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield.

Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. Wednesday until time of services at the church.

Helen G. Koester was born on Oct. 13, 1917, at Rockwell, to George and Meta Ubben Koester. She attended rural school near Rockwell and graduated from Sheffield High School. She then attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Ill.

Following her graduation, Helen worked for Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago. In 1953, Helen moved to Des Moines and worked for Solar Air Craft as a department head until Solar moved to California. She returned to Chicago and Pacific Garden Mission where she served as secretary to superintendent Harry Saulnier.

She also enjoyed being a part of the Billy Graham Crusade and sang in the choir.

In 1990 she retired and moved to Clear Lake, Iowa. Helen entered the Sheffield Care Center in August of 1994 and was a resident until she died there on Friday (Dec. 29, 2000) at the age of 83.

Survivors include sisters-in-law, Valois Koester and her husband, Walter, of Rockwell, and Genevieve Koester and her husband, William, of Anamosa. Also surviving is a nephew, Robert Koester and wife, Marcia, of Clear Lake; stepniece, Bess Tapper and husband, Alan, of Anamosa; stepnephew, Rev. Clinton Wolf and wife, Doris, of Des Moines, as well as several grandnieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Alma; brothers, Alfred, William, Walter and Edward; and nephew, Larry Koester.

MASON CITY - Diane Marie Jamtgaard, 50, 13 N. York Ave., died Sunday (Dec. 31,2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, following a long battle with cancer.

A funeral Mass for Diane Jamtgaard will be celebrated at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. in Mason City, with Father Carl A. Ries officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

Diane Marie Arends Jamtgaard was born Nov. 2, 1950, in Charles City, the daughter of John and Marlys (Zeran) Arends. She was raised in Rockford and graduated from the Rudd Rockford Marble Rock Community High School in 1969. Diane continued her education and received her Associate of Arts Degree from the North Iowa Area Community College.

On Jan. 22, 1972, she was united in marriage to Nicholas Lamoreux. The couple later divorced. She then was united in marriage on May 4, 1985 to Mike Jamtgaard. The couple later divorced.

Diane worked for the A. C. Nielsen Company in Mason City for two years following her graduation from NIACC. After her first marriage, Diane became employed at the former Iowa State Liquor Store in Clear Lake. She then went to work at the Sperry Corporation in Clear Lake for 10 years.

Following Sperry's closing, Diane returned to college and earned a BA degree in accounting from Buena Vista University. Diane started her accounting career at Minnesota Rubber for one year. For the past five and a half years, Diane was the office manager at the Odd Fellows Retirement Home in Mason City.

Diane was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. She enjoyed going to movies, traveling and spending time with her children, grandchildren and family members. She was also noted in her family for her love of chocolate.

Those thankful for sharing Diane's life include her three children, Nicole Lamoreux and her friend, David Hurst, of Mason City, Patrick Lamoreux and his wife, Danielle, of St. Stewart, Ga., and Joseph Jamtgaard, of Mason City; her father, John Arends, of Rockford; four sisters and their husbands, Kathy and Terry Young, of Manly, Joan and Brian Hendrikson, of Clear Lake, Jean and Jim Ackermann, of Blaine, Minn. and Karen and Jerry Schlader, of Rockford; two brothers, John Arends and his wife, Rochelle, of Rockford and Keith Arends and his friend, Monica Breaux, of Mesquite, Texas; four grandchildren, Leah Fistler, Lyndsey Hunt, Traci-Lynn Lamoreux and Joshua Pruin, as well as a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

BRITT - Leo A. Larson, 82, of Britt, passed away Sunday (Dec. 31, 2000) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Leo Albert Larson, the son of Chris J. and Helen (Vorland) Larson was born Nov. 27, 1918, at Kanawha, Iowa. He attended Orthel Township Schools. Leo served his country during World War II aboard the submarine U.S.S. Elliot.

On Feb. 14, 1948, E. Walter Lindgren united Leo in marriage with Margaret J. Indvik at the family farm near Britt. Mr. Larson farmed his entire life on the Larson family homestead northwest of Britt retiring in 1992.

Leo enjoyed his family, family activities, fishing, and spending the last 20 winters in Mesa, Ariz.

Leo was a member of The Evangelical Free Church of Britt and the Britt American Legion.

Mr. Larson is survived by his wife, Margaret; two daughters, Janell Salcedo, of Owatonna, Minn., and Janice Turner, of West Des Moines, Iowa; four grandchildren, Natalee and Brandon Salcedo and Jennifer and Kevin Turner; one brother, Birdeen Larson, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one sister-in-law, Grace Larson, of Britt; and many nieces and nephews.

Gordia was born April 19, 1923, the daughter of George and Genora (Olson) Erie in Ostander, Minn. On March 22, 1947 Gordia was united in marriage to Arnold Ehlers. A few short years following their marriage the couple made their home in Rockford.

Gordia looked forward to taking drives and going shopping with her son and daughter. She loved to watch ''As The world Turns'' on television and was very disappointed if she missed it.

D. Faye was born Jan. 4, 1928, the daughter of BoGard and Verma (McGee) Vinning in Brilliant, Ala. She graduated from Jennings High School in Jennings, Ala. Her ambition for learning later led her to achieve her master's degree.

Faye led a passionate life to its fullest potential. She loved to work on puzzles, play bingo and work in her magnificent garden, which produced the best tomatoes.

She loved to read and write poetry. Some of her poems she composed were published in the Library of Congress. Faye enjoyed going to garage sales in search of the ultimate collectable to add to her antique and doll collections.

When Faye was younger, she loved training and breeding horses, this love for animals had carried through her entire life and of recent with her cat named Kik. Faye spent hours working on her computer emailing her friends and family. And with all her activities and enjoyments she was always ready to go to the movies and spend time with her family.

Those thankful for having shared in Faye's life include her son, Charles B. Kear, III, and his wife, Joy, of Denver, Colo.; three daughters, Patricia D. Kear, of Mason City, Maureen J. Cheal and her husband, Richard, of Reading, England, and Melody L. Lawler and her husband, Robert, of Arvada, Colo.; 15 grandchildren, Samantha, Michael, Deborah, John, Travis, Amy, Kristen, Jeremiah, Amber, Adam, Michael E., Stephen, Laura, Craig, and Adam C.; 14 great-grandchildren; and a cousin, Sally Jo Ezell; and many close friends and neighbors.

BELMOND - John A. Breen, age 88, formerly of Blue Earth, died on Monday (Jan. 1, 2001) at The Belmond Care Center in Belmond, of cancer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. on Friday at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Blue Earth, Minn,. with Father John Ozbun officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Blue Earth.

John was born Sept. 16, 1912, at Vail, Iowa, the son of John J. and Sarah (Turner) Breen.

He was raised and educated in Truman, having graduated from Truman High School in 1931. He farmed briefly before serving four years in the Civil Conservation Corps near McGregor.

He was married to Marian E. Frailey on Sept. 16, 1937. He moved to Fairmont and started working for Montgomery Wards, which lead him to Pipestone and later to Moline, Ill. In 1946 he moved to Monmouth, Ill., where he managed two stores for the Brown-Lynch-Scott Hardware Co.

In 1949 he came to Blue Earth, Minn., where he purchased the Western Auto Store, which soon became the Breen Our Own Hardware Store. The store, now called Breen's True Value, still continues on Blue Earth's Main Street, and is the longest operating business on Main Street in Blue Earth. John retired from the store in 1989.

He was a longtime member of the SS, Peter and Paul Catholic Church where he was active in the Knights of Columbus for more than 50 years, serving as a Grand Knight.

He also served on the Blue Earth Chamber of Commerce, Toastmasters, United Hands Hospice - where he was a board member - and the Blue Earth Light and Water Board for many years. He had also presented the "Barter Time" radio program on KBEW radio for many years.

John is survived by his wife, Marian, of Belmond, Iowa; son, John Breen and his wife, Sue, of New Brighton, Minn.; son, Ken Breen and his wife, Marlys, of Blue Earth, Minn.; daughter, Sharon Baum and her husband, Don, of Belmond; daughter, Debra Abel and her husband, DuWayne, of Belmond; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Loretta Harris.

Jeanne farmed with her husband, Kenneth, in the Algona area. Among her interests she enjoyed sewing and cooking. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Thelma M. Rusley was born March 22, 1922, in rural Washington County, Iowa, the daughter of M. "Ray" and Verna (Larsen) Perry. She attended rural schools in Washington and Hancock counties. She graduated from Forest City High School in 1940.

Later, she graduated from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, and then attended Drake University where she studied music and education.

She taught in rural schools in Hancock and Winnebago County. She also taught many area students private piano and accordion lessons for many years.

Thelma was united in marriage to Kermit Rusley on June 28, 1950, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. Together they farmed near Leland. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in July, with many family and friends in a joyous event.

She was very active in Winnebago Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday School and Bible School and directing many musical productions. She was 4-H leader and was active in several local clubs.

She loved her family, gardening, canning and making jam. She also took great pride in having traveled to all 50 states.

Thelma is survived by her husband, Kermit of Leland; one son, David and his wife, Rita Rusley, of Cedar Falls; one daughter, Diane Pauk of Verona, Wis.; four granddaughters, Michelle, Danielle and Stephanie Pauk of Verona, Wis., and Rachael Rusley of Cedar Falls; one brother, Vernon and his wife, Lila, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and two sisters, Geraldine Anderson of Hawthorne, Calif., and Syble McKenzie of Safford, Ariz.

CURTIS CHRISTENSEN

VENTURA - Curtis Einer Christensen, 70, of Ventura, died Monday (Jan. 1, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

The family of Curtis Einer Christensen has requested that memorial contributions be made to Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City in his memory.

Curtis Einer Christensen was born on Feb. 4, 1930, in Garner, the son of Einer and Matilda (Paulson) Christensen. He attended and received his education in the rural country schools in Hancock County, graduating from Ventura High School in 1947. He also attended and graduated from Hamilton Business College in Mason City in 1948.

On Dec. 27, 1948, he was inducted into the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict until his honorable discharge on Aug. 15, 1951.

He was united in marriage to Betty McKee on Aug. 9, 1952, at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church in Osage. Curtis worked for the Northern Natural Gas Company, which is now called Enron Company, in Ventura for 37 years until his retirement. After his retirement he worked as an insurance adjuster for the Cerro Gordo Mutual Insurance Company in Mason City for a short time.

He enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, playing bridge, was a high school and college sports enthusiast, he also enjoyed children, his coffee group at the Deli, and spending time with his wife, Betty, at the beach in Florida, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and grandchildren.

He was a member of the Ventura Gun Club, was the first city clerk in Ventura, Booster Club, Little League baseball coach, and was on the committees in Ventura for a new public library and gymnasium.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Betty Christensen of Ventura; four children, Douglas Christensen and his wife, Cindy, of Cedar Falls, Thomas Christensen and his wife, Gracie, of Houston, Texas, Richard Christensen and his wife, Tracy, of Cedar Rapids, and Susan Clark and her husband, Bradley, of Clive, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, Heidi, Seth, Camille, Peter, Scott, Alex, Chad, Austin and Drew Christensen, and Zoey and Maggie Clark; a sister, Maxine Sommerfield of Mason City; and a brother, Max Christensen and his wife, Mary, of Ventura; as well as other relatives and many friends.

MARYLOU O'GORMAN

MASON CITY - MaryLou O'Gorman, 69, of 302 Second St. N.E., Mason City, died Thursday (Dec. 28, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services of the casual nature, befitting her style, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Jan. 3, 2001, at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with the Rev. Jeffrey Dahlin of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Cremation was conducted at Cremation Services of North Iowa. The family will conduct final resting services at a later date.

MaryLou's interesting life started with her birth on May 8, 1931, in Mason City, the daughter of Leo and Bertha (Davis) O'Gorman. She attended school at Mason City High School.

She had special talents that she used in reading Tarot Cards for 30 years, traveling all over the country. She also assisted several law enforcement agencies in locating missing children while she lived in Texas. Her last service was as an armed guard for the Grand Prairie Horse Racing Track. She often traveled to psychic fairs.

On Nov. 10, 1998, she moved to Mason City from the Dallas, Fort Worth area. MaryLou had a classy, flamboyant way of dressing and being meticulous in her appearance, even when she entered the nursing home.

MaryLou leaves two children, her daughter, Cheryl Garfin of Mason City, and her son, Jim Garfin of Daytona Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren Jonathan and Justina Garfin, both of Mason City; John Garfin, of Largo, Fla., Blake Garfin, of Charlotte, S.C, and Sherri Garfin, of Long Island, N. .Y; and a half brother, Mark O'Gorman, of Mason City.

Marcia was born June 9, 1916, in Mason City, the daughter of Pearl Morrow and Pearl Mae (Oxley) Hickok. She graduated from Ventura High School in 1934. She attended Iowa State Teachers College and taught elementary school in Dows and Coulter, Iowa, for 3 years.

She married Bill Shaffer on June 29, 1939, at her parents' home south of Ventura. They moved to Clear Lake where they started their family and lived there until 1955. Then they moved back to the family farm and lived there until 1998.

Marcia was active in helping with many aspects of farm life, gardening, selling eggs, raising lambs, unloading grain wagons, and preparing many group meals. Marcia moved to the Meadows until 1999, moving then to the Oakwood Care Center.

She was a lifelong member of the First Congregational Church and taught Sunday school there in her younger years. She was also a 50-year member of the Mother's Study Club.

Marcia is survived by her sons, Larry A. Shaffer and his wife, Kathy, of Ventura, and Arlan L. Shaffer and his wife, Cathy, of Porterville, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Jennifer Shaffer of Monticello, and Dylan Shaffer of Cedar Falls.

MASON CITY - Diane Marie Jamtgaard, 50, 13 N. York Ave., died Sunday (Dec. 31,2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, following a long battle with cancer.

A funeral Mass for Diane Jamtgaard will be celebrated at noon today at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City, with Father Carl A. Ries officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

Visitation was held Tuesday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

Diane Marie Zeran Jamtgaard was born Nov. 2, 1950, in Charles City, the daughter of John and Marlys (Zeran) Arends. She was raised in Rockford and graduated from the Rudd Rockford Marble Rock Community High School in 1969. Diane continued her education and received her Associate of Arts Degree from the North Iowa Area Community College.

On Jan. 22, 1972, she was united in marriage to Nicholas Lamoreux. The couple later divorced. She then was united in marriage on May 4, 1985, to Mike Jamtgaard. The couple later divorced.

Diane worked for the A.C. Nielsen Company in Mason City for two years following her graduation from NIACC. After her first marriage, Diane became employed at the former Iowa State Liquor Store in Clear Lake. She then went to work at the Sperry Corporation in Clear Lake for 10 years.

Following Sperry's closing, Diane returned to college and earned a BA degree in accounting from Buena Vista University. Diane then worked at Minnesota Rubber for one year. For the past five and a half years, Diane was the office manager at the Odd Fellows Retirement Home in Mason City.

Diane was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. She enjoyed going to movies, traveling and spending time with her children, grandchildren and family members. She was also noted in her family for her love of chocolate.

Those thankful for sharing Diane's life include her three children, Nicole Lamoreux and her friend, David Hurst, of Mason City, Patrick Lamoreux and his wife, Danielle, of Fort Stewart, Ga., and Joseph Jamtgaard of Mason City; her father, John Arends of Rockford; four sisters and their husbands, Kathy and Terry Young of Manly, Joan and Brian Hendrikson of Clear Lake, Jean and Jim Ackermann of Blaine, Minn., and Karen and Jerry Schlader of Rockford; two brothers, John Arends and his wife, Rochelle, of Rockford and Keith Arends and his friend, Monica Breaux, of Mesquite, Texas; four grandchildren, Leah Fistler, Lyndsey Hurst, Tracie-Lynn Lamoreux and Joshua Pruim, as well as a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Diane is preceded in death by her mother, Marlys, who died Aug. 25, 1999, her grandparents who were instrumental in her upbringing, Mildred and Russell Zeran, and two nephews.

MARY ELIZABETH THOMPSON

VENTURA - Mary Elizabeth Thompson, 85, of Ventura, died Monday (Jan. 1, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Randy Vaage officiating. Burial will be in the Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today and one hour prior to service time on Thursday at the chapel.

The family of Mary Elizabeth Thompson has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Mary Elizabeth Thompson Memorial Fund in her memory.

Mary Elizabeth Thompson was born on Nov. 9, 1915, in Rockford, the daughter of Earl and Edith Kissell and later stepdaughter of Art Awe. She attended and received her education in the Rockford school system.

Mary was united in marriage to Ray Thompson on May 3, 1931, in Mason City. He preceded her in death on May 10, 1995. After their marriage they lived in Mason City until 1948, when they moved to Belmond.

While living in Belmond, Mary cooked at the Town House Café and Aldeson's Café. In 1968, they moved to Ventura where they owned and operated Elm Bend Resort and Café on Clear Lake.

Mary became known for her cinnamon rolls, which she loved to share with her children and grandchildren. They moved back to Belmond for a few years before moving back to Ventura in 1976, where she still lived.

Mary and her husband, Ray, shared a passion for fishing, snowmobiling and going to the park. Mary loved to work with her flowers in the house and the garden and feed the birds - a joy she shared with her grandson, Jon, from Australia.

As an avid Hawkeye fan, she never missed a game. It was a treat when her granddaughter, Kelli, would come out and play cards with her. In her quiet times you would find Mary crocheting or playing her handheld solitaire game.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Ramona "Mona" McLaughlin and her husband, Joe, of Belmond, Marlys Pliley and her husband, Bob, of Ventura, and Dan Thompson and his wife, Dee, of Clear Lake; eight grandchildren, Joey McLaughlin and his wife, Renee, of Belmond, Jon McLaughlin of Melborne, Australia, Tony McLaughlin and his wife, Gayla, of Belmond, Mark McLaughlin and his wife, Patti, of Clear Lake, Diana (Pliley) and her husband, Ron Dogotch, of Houston, Texas, Jeff Pliley, of Cold Springs, Minn., Annette (Thompson) and her husband, David Lee, of Des Moines, and Kelli Thompson, of Clear Lake; 11 great-grandchildren, Erin (McLaughlin) Strong, Chris Philben, Amanda Philben, Tonisha McLaughlin, Chase McLaughlin, Jordon McLaughlin, Zacharia McLaughlin, Heather (Dogotch) and her husband, Jeff Lehrmann, Amanda Dogotch, Kim Dogotch, and Heidi Dogotch.

OSAGE - Ruth A. Earles, 79, of Osage, died Monday (Jan. 1, 2001) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage of natural causes.

Ruth was born March 21, 1921, in Kanawha, Iowa, the daughter of George and Anna (Albright) Riekens.

Ruth was united in marriage to Hurshel L. Earles on Aug. 22, 1937, at Kanawha. The couple farmed near Crystal Lake, near Cresco, and at Little Cedar before moving to Osage in 1967.

Ruth was a former Cub Scout den mother, and was known and admired for her crochet and craft work. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at the First United Methodist Church, 819 Main St., Osage, with the Rev. Karen Nichols Dungan and the Rev. Robert Barrick officiating. Interment will be in the Little Cedar Cemetery in Little Cedar.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, and will continue one hour before services on Thursday at the church.

BELMOND - Edith L. Soma, 103, passed away Monday (Jan. 1, 2001) at Belmond Health Care Center.

Edith, the daughter of Thomas and Christine Nelson Lundy, was born Feb. 19, 1897, near Kanawha in Hancock County. She grew up in the Kanawha area where she attended county schools and was baptized and confirmed at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

Edith was united in marriage with Jovial Soma on Dec. 2, 1917. The couple made their home northwest of Belmond, where Edith was a housewife. In 1932 they moved into Belmond. Jovial passed away in 1978. Edith later moved to the Belmond Community Apartments in 1982 and entered the Belmond Health Care Center in 1993.

She enjoyed reading and was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond.

Edith is survived by two daughters, Jean Sheller of Port Orchard, Wash., and Inez Pasquariello of Belmond; one son, Irvin of Marshalltown; 28 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

RAKE - Frederick H. Jordahl, 93, passed away Monday (Jan. 1, 2001) at Timely Mission Nursing Home, Buffalo Center.

Frederick Harris Jordahl was born Jan. 20, 1907, in Winnebago County, Buffalo Center. He was born and raised on the farm his father homesteaded in 1890 where he lived until his death. He was one of 14 children born to John and Elvina (Thompson) Jordahl. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lincoln Lutheran Church. Fritz received his education in country school at Lincoln Township No. 4.

He was united in marriage to Elmira Brekke on Jan. 18, 1936. Together they lived and raised a family on the family farm.

Fritz was a member of the Rake School Board for many years and is a past-president of the board. Following in the footsteps of his father, he also served as chairman for the Lincoln Township Election Board until his elder years.

He is survived by his wife, Elmira of Blue Earth, Minn.; his children, Richard Jordahl and his wife, Darlene, of Albert Lea, Minn., Janice Wiedenman and her husband, Ted, of Des Moines, Burton Jordahl and his wife, Mary, of Buffalo Center, Eugene Jordahl and his wife, Jackie, of Buffalo Center, Jacqueline Joynt and her husband, Robert, of Rake; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Eva Nickell of Sacramento, Calif., Mary King of Phoenix, Ariz., and Frances Berg of Rake.

Jeanne farmed with her husband, Kenneth, in the Algona area. She was employed as an upholstery seamstress for 37 years. Among her interests she enjoyed sewing and cooking. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Jeanne is survived by her son, Troy K. Fraser and his wife, Linda, of Meservey; three daughters, Barbara J. Roppe of Mason City, Jacqueline A. Pearson and her husband, Thomas, of Covington, Ga. and Connie J. JOICE - Lloyd Erwin 'Sox' Huso, 88, died Sunday (Dec. 31, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Unit in Mason City.

Lloyd was born July 15, 1912, in Joice, the son of Theodore and Tilda (Evenson) Huso. He was baptized and confirmed at the Beaver Creek Lutheran Church. He attended the Clark and Joice public schools. He received a baseball scholarship to attend Waldorf College and later contracted with the Cincinnati Red's baseball club. His baseball career was cut short by the war.

Lloyd was united in marriage to Burlette Thompson on April 17, 1938, in Forest City. He owned and operated the Joice Standard Station where he also sold Packard automobiles for Harold Hood of Mason City. Following the sale of his business, he worked for Twito Chevrolet in Lake Mills.

Lloyd was united in marriage to Myrtle Marie Braund at Round Prairie Lutheran Church in Glenville, Minn.

Lloyd enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, golfing, camping and playing the steel guitar. He was honored to be the grand marshal at the Joice centennial parade.

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - Kathryn M. Mason 89, formerly of Manly, died Monday (Jan. 1, 2001) at the Minnesota Masonic Home, Bloomington, Minn.

Kathryn was born Oct. 11, 1911, in Hempstead, N.Y., the daughter of Oliver Joseph and Anna Gertrude (Hayes) Marshall. Following her graduation from Hempstead High School she worked as a bank teller in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Kathryn was united in marriage to Alva Luther Mason on Sept. 18, 1943, in Battle Creek, Mich. The couple moved to Texas where Kathryn again worked as a bank teller. She moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1943 to be near her husband's family while he was overseas with the military. She worked there again as a bank teller until the couple moved to Manly in 1947.

She worked as the secretary for the Manly/North Central School Board for more than 29 years, retiring on April 24, 1981.

Kathryn and her husband enjoyed wintering in Florida and spending time with their family, especially the grandchildren at a summer cabin in Park Rapids, Minn. They also liked to travel, taking trips to Ireland, Greece and Alaska.

Kathryn's hobbies included golf and bridge. She was a former member of the Pioneer Town and Country Club, Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the church guild.

Kathryn is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Deutsch and her husband, Tom, of Prior Lake, Minn; three granddaughters, Jennifer and Courtney Deutsch of Prior Lake, Minn., and Rachel Deutsch of Minneapolis, Minn.; two brothers-in-law, Eldon Mason of Mesa, Ariz., and Jesse Mason of Denver, Colo.; one sister-in-law, Lois Squires of Mesa, Ariz.; and two nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother and sister in infancy.

MASON CITY - Maynrd H. Swyter, 77, of 502 S. Ohio, died Dec. 10, 2000, at 91 N. 58th St., Mesa, Ariz.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at Wayside Chapel of First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Doug Anderson officiating. Maynard was born May 2, 1923, in Britt, the son of William G. and Anna C. (Schrader) Swyter. He graduated from Britt High School.

He entered the U. S. Army in August of 1945, serving in the European theatre, and was discharged in January 1947.

He married Naomi R. Ludeman on June 3, 1950, in Mason City. Maynard was service supervisor for International Harvestor for 27 years, retiring in 1978.

Maynard was a member of First United Methodist Church, V.F.W., American Legion and a life-member of Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. No. 375.

He is survived by his wife, Naomi R. Swyter of Mason City; two sons, David M. Swyter of Reading, Mass., and James P. Swyter of Jakarta, Indonesia; a daughter, Lisa M. Wagner Carlson of Faribault, Minn.; two sisters, Alice Nelson of Mason City and Hattie Feather of Riceville; a brother, William Swyter of Humboldt; and six grandchildren.

Doug was united in marriage with Wuaneta Wilson on Aug. 25, 1981, in Las Vegas, Nev. He worked as a safety director for Morgan Drive Away and previously as an independent owner/operator truck driver.

Doug was a very loving husband, son and brother who enjoyed fishing, gardening and most of all, traveling.

VANDRA COUNTY, Estonia -Ellen L. Virkus, 80, formerly of Mason City, died peacefully in her sleep on Jan. 1, 2001, at the home of her son in Vandra County, Estonia.

Ellen was born Jan 24, 1920.

She is survived by her son, Toomas; three grandchildren; her sister, Salme Lang, of Hopkins, Minn.; and nieces and nephews.

NORTH ST. PAUL, Minn. -William P. Cahalan, 80, formerly of Mason City, died Wednesday (Jan. 3, 2001) in Woodbury, Minn.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 2490 N. Margaret St., N. St. Paul. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Northfield, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m . Sunday at Sandberg Mortuary, 7th Ave. and Charles St., N. St. Paul.

William P. Cahalan was born Oct. 16, 1920, in Mason City.

He was a member of I.B.E.W. local union No. 343.

William is survived by his children, Patrick (Linda), Barbara Carpenter (Bob), James (Noel), Mark (Beatrice), Tim and Judy (Lori); 11 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jean Marie Wright.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith; and a son, Michael.

He will be dearly missed by family and friends.

CHARLES CITY - Donald J. Cox, 48, died Thursday (Jan. 4, 2001) at 708 S. Main St., Charles City.

CLEAR LAKE - Goldie M Guldberg, 88, formerly of Meservey, died Tuesday (Jan. 2, 2001) at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Thornton, with the Rev. Bob Hetrick officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton.

Visitation will be held one hour before the service Saturday at the church.

Goldie Mabel Guldberg was born May 30, 1912, in Meservey, to Fred and Dirgie (Wessels) Quandt, and attended school in Meservey.

She was united in marriage to Victor Payne in 1928 and they had one son, Kenneth D. Payne. They later divorced.

In 1935 Goldie married Carl Morris of Thornton, and helped raise his four children, Lucille, Loretta, Carl Marion and Vera, along with her son, Kenneth.

In 1952 she married Leland Guldberg and together they ran the Thornton Locker until his illness forced them to leave the business. She then worked with the school lunch program until her retirement.

Goldie enjoyed playing cards, her flowers and visiting with her many friends. She also enjoyed dancing.

Goldie entered Oakwood Care Center in March of 1990, where she resided until her death on Tuesday morning, Jan. 2, at the age of 88.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth Payne and his wife, Yako, of Grand Prairie, Texas; two grandsons, Michael and Terry, both of Texas; five great grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one stepdaughter, Valores Young and her husband, Russell, of Clear Lake; and eight stepgrandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Betty Johnson, of Garner; and several cousins.

Goldie was preceded in death by her parents; two infant sons; her husbands, Carl Morris and Leland Guldberg; and four stepchildren.

BLANCHE R. BROWN

BRITT - Blanche R. Brown, 82, died Wednesday (Jan. 3, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church, with Pastor Scott Hontz and Pastor Jack Vandenheuvel officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Cataldo Funeral Home, Britt, and will resume one hour before the services at the church Saturday.

Blanche Rosetta Brown, the daughter of Melvin William and Anna Elizabeth (Brooks) Brown, was born June 25, 1918, at Britt. She attended the rural schools of Hancock County and then stayed home to help her family.

In 1938 she moved with her family to a farm northwest of Garner, and in 1992 she moved with her sister, Velma, to Britt. Blanche enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, embroidering and crocheting. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church

Blanche is survived by two sisters, Velma Brown of Britt and Marlene Oudekerk and her husband, Albert, of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Viola Brown, of Forest City; an aunt, Trevel Phippe of Houston, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.

Blanche was preceded in death by her mother, Anna, Feb. 28, 1960; her father, Melvin, April 11, 1969; three brothers, Edwin, Kenneth and Merle Brown; two sisters, Verle and Charlotte Brown; two brothers in infancy, Alan and Alvin; and an infant sister, Aretha.

MASON CITY - Peter Lichman Jr., 74, died Monday (Jan. 1, 2001) at Knapp Medical Center, Weslaco, Texas.

A funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Peter was born June 25, 1926, in Frost, Minn., the son of Peter and Lydia (Groff) Lichman. He attended Mason City public schools and later worked for many years at Decker's Meat Packing in Mason City. He also drove for Ruan Trucking in Mason City.

Peter was united in marriage to Alice Chaney on May 16, 1980, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mason City. They enjoyed camping and traveling together and in retirement have spent most of their winters in Texas.

Peter's hobbies included cooking, fishing, deer hunting in Michigan, and reading, especially Western novels. His great joy was helping his neighbors at the camp park in Texas where they wintered and visiting with and meeting new people.

Peter was a member of the Mason City Moose Lodge and the V.F.W. Post No. 733 of Mason City.

Peter is survived by his wife, Alice Lichman; three children, Nancy Likness and her husband, Mike, of Ventura, Calif., Tim Lichman and his wife, Laurie, of Mason City and Jon Lichman and his wife, Yolanda, of Mason City; two stepchildren, Sharon Brown and her husband, Pete, of Woodbine, Md., and Bruce Chaney of Rockford; seven grandchildren, Jake Likness of Ventura, Calif., Jared Lichman and Elena, Danielle and Alex Lichman, all of Mason City, and Matthew and Valerie Brown of Woodbine, Md.; and two brothers, Don Lichman and his wife, Betty, of Plymouth, and Jim Lichman and his wife, Lee, of Portage, Wis.

Peter was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joe; and a daughter, Sally.

LORETTA T. ROPER

CLEAR LAKE - Loretta T. Roper, 79, of Bradenton, Fla., passed away peacefully Wednesday (Jan. 3, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A private service of remembrance and caring will be held at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. And Mrs. Albert H. Roper, 19 Timberlane, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake officiating.

The family of Loretta T. Roper has requested that memorial contributions be made to the National Mental Health Association in her memory.

Loretta, the first daughter of Mose' and Alice (Benedetti) Tarabella, was born on Aug. 20, 1921, in Malbacco, Italy, a tiny marble mining town in the coastal Tuscan mountains.

She met her future husband, Edwin Harris Roper, in Rome during World War II. They were united in marriage on June 29, 1947, in Menomonee, Mich. The couple made their home in Riverside, Ill., with later moves to Aurora and Brookfield, Ill.

A gourmet cook and a master gardener, Loretta also enjoyed reading, art and music. She was a member of the Riverside First Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir.

Following her husband's retirement in 1980, the couple moved to Bradenton, Fla. Loretta joined and served as a deaconess in the Bayshore Gardens Presbyterian Church. On Dec. 16, 2000, she moved to Clear Lake to be close to her son and his family.

She is survived by her son, Albert Roper and his wife, Sally, of Clear Lake; a daughter, Alice LeCount, of Vail, Colo.; a sister Giuseppina Montanarini and a brother, Steno Tarabella, of Rome, Italy; a brother Franco Tarabella of Forte dei Marmi, Lucca, Italy; grandchildren, Virginia, Danielle, A.J., Charles and Zachary Roper of Clear Lake, Ashton Lafferty of Denver, Colo., Michael and Marnee LeCount of Vail, Colo.; and many dear friends in Italy, Illinois, Colorado and Florida.

Her husband preceded Mrs. Roper in death.
