VELMA LORAINE CALLANDER

MASON CITY-Velma Lorraine Callander, 86, of 224 1st St. N.W., Mason City, died Friday (Dec. 14, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill of Holy Family Catholic Church officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and one hour before the service. A scriptural prayer service will be held at 5:30 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to the Velma L. Callander Memorial Fund.

Velma was born July 16, 1915, west of Kearney, Neb., the daughter of John and Francis (Brisbain) Collins. She attended school in Fort Dodge and then moved to Omaha and Oregon. Velma returned to Fort Dodge and was then united in marriage to John Robert Peter Callander on Sept. 15, 1958, in Blue Earth, Minn. They moved to Mason City in May 1959, where Velma was primarily a homemaker. She also worked for several years at the Brat House and Key Rexall Drug in Mason City.

Velma enjoyed shopping, word puzzles, playing cards, crocheting and spending time with her grandkids. She also took great pride in her flower garden and evergreen trees, and in her cooking, especially her "million dollar fudge." She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Velma is survived by her husband, John, of Mason City; five children, Sondra Jean Hebert of Fort Dodge, Robert Harvey Knowles and his wife, Twila, of Fort Dodge, Sheila Ann Infante and her husband, Albert Sr., of Mason City, Sonia Rae Jones of Manly, and Martha Louisa Beeman of Omaha, Neb.; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Francis Lorraine Kearney; two brothers, Jack and Glen; and one sister, Genevieve.

ALGONA- Lola Esther Maguire, 85, of Algona, died Saturday (Dec. 15, 2001) at the Good Samaritan Center in Algona.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona, with Father Steve Brodersen officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Algona.

DARRELL W. PATTERSON

ST. ANSGAR - Darrell W. Patterson, 78, of St. Ansgar, died Saturday (Dec. 15, 2001) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Toeterville, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson of Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Osage officiating. Burial will be in St. Ansgar Cemetery in St. Ansgar.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, 207 S. School St., St. Ansgar.

Darrell was born in Mitchell County to John W. and Velma (Rutt) Patterson, on July 21, 1923. He married Ruth Stromley on Dec. 31, 1943, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived all their married life in Mitchell County.

Darrell loved farming, making farming his life and lifestyle. A great joy to Darrell were visits with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Max Patterson.

Darrell is survived by his wife, Ruth, of St. Ansgar; two sons, Rodney L. Patterson and his wife, Lori, and Virgil L. Patterson and his wife, Linda, of St. Ansgar; two daughters, LaDonna Gunderson and her husband, Jerry, and Rhonda Gerk and her husband, Steve, of Osage; nine grandchildren, Scott Halbach and his wife, Deanna, Gregg Halbach and his wife Amy, Daniel Halbach, Corey Patterson, Michael Gerk, Carter Patterson, Taylor Patterson, Mackenzie Patterson and Hilary Gerk; three great grandchildren, Hayden, Alexis and Katelyn Halbach; two brothers, Donald W. Patterson and his wife, Enid, and John Patterson and his wife, Fran, of St. Ansgar; three sisters, Neva Nelson of Lyle, Minn., Helen Debner of Marble Rock and Lois Benesh and her husband, Walter, of Brownsdale, Minn.; sister-in-law, Mrs. Max (Mildred) Patterson, of St. Ansgar, and many nieces and nephews.

HOPE FOLKAMA

MASON CITY - Hope (Robinson) Folkama, 83, of rural Mason City, died Tuesday (Dec. 11, 2001) at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Rolling Acres Free Methodist Church, 604 23rd St. S.W., Mason City, with the former pastor of the Free Methodist Church, Rev. Herschel L. Hawf, and the Rev. Larry Day officiating. Committal service will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at 1 p.m.

Visitation will be at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, from noon to 12:45 p.m. Monday. The family will greet guests following the service in the fellowship hall of the church.

Memorials may be given to the Rolling Acres Free Methodist Church of the Alzheimers Association. Condolences may be sent to Box 883, Mason City, Iowa 50402.

Hope Folkama was born March 19, 1918, in Mason City, the daughter of Alva B. and Violet (Britt) Robinson. She graduated from Mason City High School and worked for several years at a local paint and wallpaper store owned by Ralph Shepherd.

She then furthered her education at Seattle Pacific University. Hope returned to Mason City and married Andrew L. Folkama on Feb. 14, 1943.

They farmed near Dougherty for over a year and then moved to a farm southeast of Mason City in 1944. She farmed there for 57 years raising many animals, including dairy cows, sheep, chickens, dogs, geese, peacocks and was particularly fond of her cats. She also managed huge vegetable gardens, sharing the produce with many.

Hope was very involved with her church, serving as a young adult Sunday school teacher, youth activity director, children's and women's missionary societies, and kitchen committee. She also volunteered with the Salvation Army and an abused women help line.

She spent 18 years actively supporting her daughters' involvement in 4-H. She assisted with charity fund drives, served as a local polling judge, was a member of the Pleasant Ridge Club and contributed her time to many other concerns.

Some of Hope's favorite pastimes were reading, crocheting, and watching the wildlife and birds on her farm. Hope often said that her proudest accomplishment (probably greatest challenge) was raising four independent daughters.

Hope is survived by her four daughters, Amy Lee Johnson and husband, Ronald, of Seattle, Wash., Linda Gene Wright and husband, Samuel, of Alexandria, Va., Deborah Hope Folkama of Portsmouth, Va., and Ellen Elizabeth Folkama of Alexandria, Va.; two grandsons, Lawrence E. Levin of Fairbanks, Ark., and Matthew S. Levine and wife, Leslie, of Lynnwood, Wash.; one sister, Shirley Gene Flynn of Cleveland, Ohio; one great-granddaughter, Sydney Ellis Levine of Lynnwood, Wash.; 18 nieces and nephews, and numerous great- nieces and nephews.

Hope is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Andrew L.; brothers Richard Robinson and Keith Robinson, and sister, Dorothy Asfahl.

FRANK EDWARD RAASCH

ROWAN- Frank Edward Raasch, 60, a Rowan resident of 13 years and formerly of St. Paul, Minn., died Tuesday (Dec. 11, 2001) at his home in Rowan.

Private family services will be held. The body will be cremated. Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond is in charge of arrangements.

Frank Edward, the son of Fred and Louise Michaud Raasch, was born Nov. 12, 1941, in St. Paul, Minn. He grew up in St. Paul and attended school there. After school, Frank joined the United States Navy, where he served for several years.

Frank was united in marriage with Denise Tuchner. The couple later divorced but remained close friends.

Frank is survived by two sisters, Pat Amos of Rowan and Janet Mulhern of St. Paul, Minn.; two brothers, George and his wife, Joan Raasch, and David Raasch, both of St. Paul; special friend, Denise; numerous nieces and nephews, and his best pal, his dog Rowdy.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Fred.

ERMA D. NEAL

GARNER - Erma D. Neal, 86, of Garner, died Saturday (Dec. 15, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Her funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Garner with the Rev. Kay Hooper officiating. Interment will be in Alexander Cemetery in Alexander.

FLORENCE ANNA BOTTLEMAN

NORTHWOOD - Florence Anna Bottleman, 81, of Northwood, died Thursday (Dec. 13, 2001) at her home in Northwood.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Paul Holmer officiating. Burial will take place at Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 S. in Northwood, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Florence Anna Bottleman was born Sept. 1, 1920, in Otranto Township, Mitchell County, to William and Matilda (Hanson) Gentz.

She married Elmer Bottleman on July 1, 1942, in Unionville, Mo. She raised her family and worked alongside her husband, Elmer, on the farm for 26 years. After moving to town in 1967, she worked at Mercy Hospital as a nursing assistant. She also worked at Carroll George Inc. until retiring.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Elmer, and two brothers, Art and Roy Gentz.

She is survived by her children, Duwayne and wife, Cheryl Bottleman, of Northwood, Donald and his wife, Janet Bottleman, of Grafton, Mary Steffenson and her husband, David, of Watertown, Minn., Ruth Gordon and her husband, Dennis of Fond du Lac, Wis., Karen Pixley and her husband, Galen, of Northwood, and Sharon Hartwell, of Clear Lake; two sisters, Dorothy Low and Wilma Thompson, of Northwood; two brothers, Raymond Gentz and William Gentz, of Northwood; 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

ARDIS BERTHA SHAW

MESERVEY - Ardis Bertha Shaw, 77, died Thursday ( Dec. 13, 2001) at her home in Meservey.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey, with the Rev. Dan Voss officiating. Interment will be in the Meservey Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf-Grarup Funeral Home, 201 Ohio St., Meservey, and before the service at the church on Monday.

Ardis was born June 17, 1924, on the family farm in Wisner Township, Franklin County, to Heiko Jacob and Grace Lycinda (Hafermann) Janssen. She attended Center School No. 5 in Wisner Township and graduated from Meservey High School. On Aug. 25, 1942, Ardis was united in marriage with Wayne K. Shaw in Bethany, Mo.

Ardis was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey, where she was baptized and confirmed. She was a member of the Ruth Circle and the quilters group. Ardis was committed to her family, she always arrived early for her grandchildren's school programs. She was a 4-H leader for more than 25 years and a member of the Meservey Kitchen Lassies for many years. Ardis liked to quilt; she made baby quilts for each member of her family.

Ardis is survived by her children, Bertha Shaw of Eagle Grove, Kenneth Shaw and wife, Linda, Arnold Shaw and wife, Doreen, Lucinda Zieman and husband, David, all of Meservey; grandchildren, Michelle Duff and husband Rob, Kendra Wilson and husband, Scot, Chad Shaw and wife, Ranae, Nikki Thompson and husband, Jay, Krista Dickman and husband, Joey, Kelly Zieman, Brian Zieman and Michael Zieman; great-grandchildren, Amber, Kyle and Hailey Duff, Sadie and Seth Wilson, Spenser and Conner Shaw; and brother, Vern Janssen of Belmond.

MILDRED BERRY

HAMPTON - Mildred Berry, 84, of Hampton, died Friday (Dec. 14, 2001) at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hampton, with Father Jim Miller officiating. Inurnment will be in Hampton Cemetery in Hampton.

Mildred Berry was born Sept. 21, 1917, in Mason City, a daughter of George William and Elizabeth C. (Crawford) Van Every. She was raised in Mason City and was a graduate of Mason City High School.

She was united in marriage to Joseph E. Berry on June 12, 1941, in Mason City. She was employed at Hampton Tax Service for 25 years. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

She enjoyed her grandchildren and enjoyed e-mailing family and friends.

Survivors include three sons, Michael William Berry, of Whitewater, Wis., Thomas Berry and wife, Linda, of Hampton, and Patrick J. Berry, of Kirkland, Wash.; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Lunzer, Steven Berry, Michael Berry, Sean Berry, Katherine Berry, Anthony Berry and Laura Berry.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister and one brother.

NORTHWOOD - Marcele JoAnne Dishon Jensen, 63, died Saturday (Dec. 15, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Paul Holmer officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Marcele was born on Jan. 31, 1938, in Northwood to Ralph and Bertha (Kruse) Dishon. She attended school in Mason City and moved to the Northwood area in 1956.

She was united in marriage to William Erving Jensen on Nov. 7, 1958. Marcele was a babysitter for many years. She also did dog grooming in her home. She was employed at Townmart for many years and due to health problems had to quit.

Marcele enjoyed being with family and friends. She also enjoyed fishing, crocheting, cooking and baking. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and spending time with her mother and having coffee with her.

She is survived by her husband, William; two children, Denise Kalvig and Dennis Jensen, both of Northwood; her mother, Bertha Dishon of Northwood; grandchildren, Eric Jensen, Heather and Nicholas Kalvig, all of Northwood, and Phillip and Krystal Jensen from Mason City; great-grandchildren, Elexis Marie Carrison and Marisa Renae Wendel, both of Northwood; one sister, Jeanette Jacks and her husband, Larry, from Eaton, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Lorentzen from Weslaco, Texas; a brother-in-law, Gordy Jensen and his wife, Faye, of Albert Lea, Minn; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Marcele was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Dishon and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Benjamin and Hattie Jensen.

AGNES TENORA (RUSLEY) FLUGUM

SIOUX CITY - Agnes Tenora (Rusley) Flugum, 91, died Wednesday (Dec. 12, 2001) at a Sioux City care center of congestive heart failure.

Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethany Lutheran Church, Spencer, with the Rev. Tom Dettmer officiating. Internment will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m. at Warner Funeral Home.

Agnes Tenora (Rusley) Flugum was born on Aug. 31, 1910, to Tilda (Kvaslerud) and Tom J. Rusley on a family farm in Center Township in Winnebago County, Iowa.

When her family moved to North Dakota, Agnes' first school years were spent in a Norwegian speaking country school near Grenora, N.D. Upon the family's return to Iowa, Agnes received her education at Dahlen Country School in Winnebago County and Clark Country School in Worth County. She completed her high school education at Lake Mills High School graduating in May 1929.

Agnes was baptized Oct. 2, 1910, by the Rev. H. E. Fosness and confirmed May 17, 1925, by the Rev. Johones Granskow in the Norwegian language at Winnebago Lutheran Church rural Lake Mills.

Prior to her marriage, she was employed at Cool Springs Canning Co. in Lake Mills. On June 14, 1931, she was married by the Rev. H. F. Huseth to William Oliver Flugum at Winnebago Lutheran Church. The couple moved to Spencer where they owned and operated the Spencer Dental Laboratory for 40 years. In 1971 they donated their dental laboratory to the people of Madagascar, where they served on the mission field.

Agnes, her husband and two children joined Bethany Lutheran Church, Spencer, Iowa, on Nov. 3, 1946. She was an active member for almost 55 years, having served in many capacities. She moved to Sioux City in August 1991 to be near her daughter. There she attended Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She loved to read and make Norwegian foods. Agnes was very proud of her Norwegian heritage.

Agnes is survived by her two children, Ronald A. Flugum, Anchorage, Alaska, and Helen Kay Flugum of Sioux City; her siblings, Helen and Jesse Chase, Mason City, Kermit Rusley, Leland, Thelma Bannon, Manchester, Mo., and Alvina and Stanley Rusley, Lake Mills; her Rusley and Flugum nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Senora Rusley and Lydia (Rusley) Wolfe; one brother, Joseph Rusley; and her husband, Bill, in April 1990.

RYAN PATRICK STEFFANNI

NORTHWOOD - Ryan Patrick Steffanni, 19, of 107 Tenth St. S., died Saturday (Dec. 15, 2001) at his home.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Dec. 21, in Norwalk, Ohio, where inurnment will take place at the Hester Cemetery in Bronson Township. Walker Funeral Home, 98 West Main Street, Norwalk, is in charge of those arrangements. A memorial service will be held locally at a later date. Conner Colonial Chapel, 99 11th St. N., Northwood, is in charge of the local arrangements.

Ryan was born June 17, 1982, in Norwalk, Ohio, the son of Patrick and Kristie (Jellinger) Steffanni. He attended school at Western Reserve High School in Norwalk, where he was active in show choir, track, basketball, wrestling, football and baseball. Ryan was currently a student at Northwood Kensett High School where he was also active in football and baseball. He loved all kinds of sports and enjoyed camping and going to concerts with his brother. Ryan was a very loving boy who will be missed greatly by all his family and friends.

GARNER - Erma D. Neal, 86, of Garner died Saturday (Dec. 15, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Erma Dora Neal, the daughter of Lewis and Dora (Larsen) Bell, was born May 14, 1915, at Alexander. She attended school in Alexander and graduated from Alexander High School.

On Feb. 19, 1935, she was married to Glen George Neal at Ft. Dodge. They farmed for the first seven years of their marriage in the Alexander, Dows, Mason City and Manly area until moving to Ackley where they owned and operated a hotel. Later, they owned and operated the sale barn in Dows and in 1957 moved to Garner where they owned and operated Glen's Auto Sales until retiring in 1978.

Erma helped her husband, Glen, as a bookkeeper in the various businesses they were involved in over the years. She enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, baking and playing the organ and piano.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garner, UMW, Rebekah Circle, Homemakers Club and the Kensington Club of Dows.

Erma is survived by her husband, Glen G. Neal of Garner; two children, Larry Neal and his wife, Elaine, of Garner, and Joann Stuck and her husband, Bill, of Dows; four grandchildren, Brenda (Stuck) Wyer and her husband, Larry, of Lumberton, Texas, Bill L. Stuck and his wife, Lisa, of Dows, Mark Neal of Clear Lake, and Lori (Neal) Hart and her husband, Tom, of Cedar Falls; four great-grandchildren, Amber Neal, Alex and Darby Hart and Billy Stuck; a brother, Eldon Bell and his wife, Laverne, of Thornton; four sisters, Inez Ginapp of Belmond, Alma Pals of Alexander, Dorothy Poland and her husband, Cliff, of Rockwell, and Lavonne Card and her husband, Dallas, of Alexander; a brother-in-law, Maurice Neal and his wife, Ruth, of Pioneer, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY - Gladys Marie Dixon, 93, of Good Shepherd Health Center, died Sunday (Dec.16, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Bill Poland officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City. Visitation will continue Wednesday one hour prior to services at the church.

Gladys was born July 27, 1908, the daughter of Jules and Emma (Portner) Nicolet in Cleghorn, Iowa. Her family lived in the Iowa Falls area for a couple of years before they then moved to Thornton where Gladys graduated from high school. Following high school, Gladys received further education at Iowa State Teachers College. She returned to teach in rural schools for several years.

On February 6, 1937, Gladys was united in marriage to Arthur Lyle Dixon at the First United Methodist Church parsonage in Mason City. The couple lived on a farm near Meservey for five years before moving to the farm southwest of Mason City. Gladys moved to the nursing home in 1982 and spent most of the next twenty years there.

During Gladys' younger years, she enjoyed doing needlework including tatting and embroidery work. She enjoyed the activities and worship services at Good Shepherd even though she had suffered a stroke 34 years ago and was left paralyzed on her left side. Gladys never considered herself handicapped. She loved attending her children's and grandchildren's school and church programs. Gladys enjoyed attending birthday parties and always looked forward to Christmas. She was an avid reader who could not wait to get her hands on the newspaper.

Gladys was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, the Wesley United Methodist Women and the Bath Farm Women.

Those thankful for having shared in Gladys' life include her son Delton Dixon and his wife, LeAnn, of Mason City; one sister, Mabel Oehlert of Rockwell; three grandchildren, Sara Broers and her husband, Todd, of Mason City, Jeff Dixon and his wife, Michelle, of Mason City, and Kari McMannes and her husband, Jeremy, of Suwanee, Ga.; and six great- grandchildren, Justin and Jenna Dixon, Blaine and Garrett Broers, and Austin and Connor McMannes.

Mrs. Dixon was preceded in death by her parents; husband ,Arthur, in 1971; six sisters, Edith, Alice, Rose, Emma, Nellie and Helen; and two brothers, Armand and Henry.

Thomas Felper was born Feb. 9, 1914, to Thomas Felper and Nina Ritter in Mitchell County, Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Lois Stanbro on May 8, 1933, in Preston, Minn. She passed away in 1985.

Tom was later united in marriage to Opal Jensson in Lime Springs, Iowa, and Opal passed away in January 1994.

Tom farmed most of his life and semi retired in the late '60s. He then purchased a grain truck and hauled grain for approximately 10 years. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards and visiting with his friends.

He is survived by daughter, Alma and Eugene Hickey of Kewanee, Ill.; sons Arnold and Mardella Felper and Amil and Leota Felper, both of Riceville; daughter, Ardella Felper of Cresco; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Nora Hamilton of Elkton, Minn; and a special friend, Marilyn Irwin of Riceville.

Joseph was born April 28, 1914, in Garden City, Iowa, the son of John E. and Helen (Larson) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Bergen Lutheran Church, Roland. Following school he served in the United Sates Army during World War II.

He worked in Chicago, then moved to Roland where he worked for Great Lakes Pipeline and later transferred to Clear Lake. He then worked for Clear Lake Parks and Rec. Department for 10 years retiring in 1978.

Joseph enjoyed working on model trains, doing jigsaw puzzles, reading, fishing and gardening. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake; life time member of D.A.V. and Clear Lake V.F.W.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Christine Johnson, Clear Lake; two children, Sandra Millard and her husband, Gerald, Milwaukee, Wis., and Lisa Hansmeier and her husband, Doug, Maple Grove, Minn.; four grandchildren, Ryan Millard, Eric Millard, Abby Hansmeier and John Hansmeier; one brother-in-law; three sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

Esma Minnie Ida Rosel Hartwig was born on Dec. 30, 1910, in Rock Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, to George and Anna (Runge) Rosel Sr. She was baptized on Feb. 12, 1911, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Township. She was confirmed on March 28, 1926, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar by the Rev. Paul Brammer. She received her education through the tenth grade at St. Ansgar public schools.

Esma Rosel and Paul Hartwig were married on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, 1931, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. God blessed this marriage with a daughter, Karen June. The couple lived on the Hartwig home farm in Newburg Township until November 1975 when they retired from farming and moved to St. Ansgar.

Esma belongs to several community and church organizations and particularly enjoyed her Federated Women's Club, the St. Ansgar Garden Club, and WELCA at St. John's Church. She loved her garden with all its roses and was an avid stitcher. Esma's beautiful singing will be remembered by many. As a couple, Paul and Esma rarely missed sports or music activities through their grandsons' school years.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Karen, and son-in-law, Frederick Steinberg; her grandson, Brian and his wife, Tori, and three great-grandchildren, Gregory Paul, Kayley Sue and Riley Dean; and her grandson, Bruce, all of St. Ansgar; three sisters, Leola Ruehlow and Doris Erdman of St. Ansgar and Wilma Kronemann and her husband, Lloyd, of Grafton; two brothers, Lawrence Rosel and his wife, Norma, of Osage, and George Rosel Jr. and his wife, Marla, of Bertram, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. NORA SPRINGS - Karen Marie Smith, 64, Died Sunday (Dec. 16, 2001) at her home in Nora Springs.

Karen Marie (Hansen) Smith was born June 20, 1937, in Iowa Falls, the oldest daughter of Harry Pete and Merna (Whitman) Hansen and died on Dec. 16, 2001, at her home in Nora Springs.

Karen was a graduate of Iowa Falls High School in 1955 and then in 1957 she graduated from the two-year teaching program at the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She went on to receive her bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1976.

On Aug. 15, 1958, she was united in marriage to Marvin Smith at the United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls. They settled in rural LaMars and began raising a family which grew to include six children. In 1968 they moved to Nora Springs.

Teaching and reading were important to Karen and she had many friends among other teachers and her students. She began her teaching career at Archer, Iowa, where she taught kindergarten. Following a break to begin raising her family, she resumed teaching in Nora Springs. In 1972 she helped start the Winnie the Pooh Nursey School serving as its teacher for 13 years. She also taught remedial reading and math and later included the Reading Recovery program. She retired from the Nora Springs-Rock Falls Community School in 2001, where she was well respected and loved by students and other teachers.

Karen became involved in a variety of activities throughout the years. At various times she served as a Girl Scout leader, a 4-H leader and with the Literary Leaders. She also served on the Nora Springs Library Board helping guide the summer reading program and as the story lady for several years. Karen's faith was an important part of her life. She was a member and elder of the Eden Presbyterian Church and was very active in a variety of roles, including teaching and leading Sunday school, serving on the session, leading women's groups and singing in the choir.

Karen was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by her family. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Marvin Smith; six children, Galen and his wife, Cindy Ira-Smith, of West Union, Diane Jones and her husband, Phil, of Urbandale, Brenda Smith of Nashua, N. H., Laura Fulton and her husband, Allen, of Des Moines, Scott Ramsey-Smith and his wife, Teri, of Marshalltown, and Jill Smith and her husband, Doug Meythaler, of Golden Valley, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; a sister, Joan Geil of Knoxville; and a brother, Tom Hansen of Ackley.

GARNER - Eugenia B. Clement, 78, died Monday (Dec. 17, 2001) at the Concord Care Center, Garner, from complications of Alzheimer's disease.

Eugenia Bess Clement, the daughter of Emil and Olga (Schweers) Riff, was born Dec. 7, 1923, at Hondo, Texas. She attended Murphy School near Hondo and graduated from Hondo High School in 1941.

After graduation, she attended Trinity College in San Antonio, Texas, and then worked at the air force base in Hondo during World War II. It was there she met her future husband, Roland A. Clement. They were married at Hondo on June 10, 1945. They lived in Hondo and later moved to Monroe, La., where Roland was stationed with the Air Force. Following his discharge, they moved to Webster City, Des Moines and in 1947 moved to Miller where they farmed and raised their family.

Genie worked a variety of jobs in the area and in 1990 retired from Winnebago Industries. She enjoyed sewing, reading, playing games and was known for her cooking and cake baking.

She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, UPW and served on the session. She also was a member of Homemakers Club and did volunteer work for the March of Dimes.

Genie is survived by her nine children, Gary Clement of Forest City, Elizabeth Smith and her husband, Daniel, of Coon Rapids, Minn., Craig Clement of Garner, Bruce Clement and wife, Laurel, of Garner and their three children, Josah, Chelsea and Logan, Joan Hillier of Chehalis, Wash.,and her daughter, Morgan, Douglas Clement and wife, Mary, of Garner and their three children, Nicole, Katie and Alex, Spencer Clement and wife, Karin, of Fort Dodge and their three daughters, Machelle, Jessie and Barbara, Stuart Clement and wife, Angie, of Miller, and their three children, Karlee, Breann and Spencer, and Muriel Poppens and husband, Scott, of Cedar Falls and their two children, Matthew and Megan; a sister, Ethel Martin and husband, Joe, of Hondo, Texas; a sister-in-law, Gertrude Riff of Hondo, Texas; a brother-in-law, Lawrence Guernsey of Lake Mills; and many nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY - Beulah M. Peters, 94, formerly of 2716 S. Jefferson Ave., died Monday morning (Dec. 17, 2001) at the Odd Fellows Home in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Faith Baptist Church, 1807 S. Kentucky Ave., with the Rev. Miles M. Grismore officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Beulah was born on Oct. 28, 1907, at Atlantic, one of two children to George and Rose Ann Comer.

She was a long-time member of Faith Baptist Church and the church Birthday Club.

Beulah attended the Atlantic schools. Early in her life she cleaned homes at Spencer and this is where she met William Peters. She later was united in marriage to William Peters. To this marriage was born four children.

They moved to Everly, where they lived until his death in 1960 when she moved to Milford. In 1984, she moved to Mason City so that she could live closer to her daughter, Lois.

She loved everything in the outdoors, especially watching the trees mature that she and her husband planted at the farm. She also enjoyed cooking and tending her flower and vegetable gardens. The church was her mainstay in life.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

Those thankful in sharing Beulah's life include her daughter, Lois, and her husband, Rex Colling, of Mason City; two sons, John and his wife, Cheri Peters, of Madera, Calif., and Kenneth and his wife, Phyllis Montgomery, of Tuolumne, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Evelyn Rose Montgomery, and one grandson, Steven Henaman.

MANLY - William P. "Bill" Goodale, 70, of Manly, died Monday (Dec. 17, 2001) at the Hennepin County Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn.

A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly, with the Rev. David G. Kucera officiating. Interment will follow at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St. in Manly, where a scripture service will also be held at 6 p.m.

Bill was born Sept. 26, 1931 in Floyd County, the son of Burl and Lillian (Wagner) Goodale. He graduated from Little Cedar High School in 1948 and from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1950.

Bill entered in to the United States Air Force in 1951, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage to Veronica Theis on Sept. 27, 1952, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Haven, Iowa.

Bill worked as a hired man on several farms in Mitchell County in the early 1950s. In 1955 he was engaged in farming on his own in Mitchell County and later in Floyd County. In 1968, the couple moved to Plymouth and in 1971, to Manly.

Bill raised horses on his farms, and enjoyed flowers, gardening, sewing, quilting, woodworking, playing cards and dancing. He also loved to fish, camp, go for bike rides, and walk with his group of walkers and have coffee with them afterward. Bill was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Iowa State Cyclone fan, but his great joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge in both Charles City and Mason City and a member and lay distributor at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly.

William is survived by his wife, Veronica, of Manly; eight children and their spouses, Wilma and Mike Romig, of Manly, Verlene (Cannon) and Rod Dunlavey, of Traer, Virgil and Marcia Goodale, of Mason City, LeAnn (Huse) Goodale, and Vincent Copas, of Clear Lake, Mark and Kristy Goodale, of Ames, Larry and Jill Goodale, of Ames, Christine and Dennis Krauth, of Forest City, and Brad and Jodi Goodale, of Muscatine; and 17 grandchildren, Wesley Romig, his wife, Melissa, and their children, Hayden and Hannah, all of Mason City, Nathan Romig and his wife, Ginger, of Urbana, Alan and Andrew Cannon, of Traer, Tim, Tara, and Travis Goodale, of Mason City, James Huse, his wife, Kathy, and their children, Ali Jo, Andrea and Alicia, all of Lake Mills, Lora Huse and her children, Dylan and Malania, all of Clear Lake, Kyle Goodale, of Clear Lake, Donna, Samantha and William Goodale, all of Ames, Christopher "Topher" and Matthew Krauth, both of Forest City, and Veronica and Victoria Goodale, both of Muscatine. MASON CITY - Carol M. Justice, 64, of 1807 Cerro Gordo Way, Mason City, died Sunday morning (Dec. 16, 2001) at her home.

Carol was born on Sept. 20, 1937, at Tracy, Minn., the daughter of Leonard and Gertrude "Hanson" Gullickson. She was a graduate of Tracy High School.

She was employed as the salad lady at the Pheasant Run restaurant, and later for Prime and Wine and Pappa's.

She looked forward to and enthusiastically decorated her home and yard for every season and holiday.

HARM DUANE TERHARK

CORWITH - Harm Duane Terhark, 70, of Corwith, entered into his eternal home on Monday (Dec. 17, 2001). A funeral service for Harm Terhark will be at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at the St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith, with Pastor Ronald Feuerhak officiating. Burial will be in Corwith Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Harm was born on March 31, 1931, to Fred and Anna Terhark in rural Kanawha, the second of eight children. Harm was born with a tremendous work ethic and began earning a living at a very young age working for neighboring farmers.

His love of work and producing led him to build a successful farming operation in the Corwith area that his son, Bruce, still runs today.

In addition to his farming operations, Harm was involved in various business enterprises, including Schroeder and Terhark Trailer Sales. His easy going demeanor and his love of visiting made him a tremendously successful salesman at Schroeder and Terhark. He was often the top dealership for Kiefer Built trailers.

Harm was a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith and led a deeply spiritual life. He served on the church council on several occasions. He passed this Christian life onto his four children.

Harm was a committed family man. He was a father that easily celebrated his children's high points and was always there to pick them up at the low points. He was not only always there for his family but his community as well. Harm served on the school board at the local community school for several years. He gave of his time and generosity to his community freely.

He is survived by his wife, Jean (Nelson) and four children, Marquita Hays, of Fort Dodge, Bruce Terhark, of Corwith, Paula Robinson, of West Des Moines, and Brian Terhark of Waukee; seven siblings, Elizabeth Terhark, of St. Paul, Minn., Curtis Terhark, of St. Ansgar, Marge Kavaya, of Mason City, Ilene Brown, of Mason City, Carroll Terhark, of Mason City, Kenneth Terhark, of Britt, and Linda Paulsen, of Mason City; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

NOVA T. GELNER

KLEMME - Nova T. Gelner, 86, of Klemme, died Monday (Dec. 17, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Her funeral will be held 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Klemme with the Rev. Paddy Druhl officiating. Interment will be in Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme.

Nova Theo Gelner, the daughter of Albert G. and Lillie M. (Lau) Koerner, was born July 7, 1915 at Klemme where she grew up and spent her entire life. She graduated from Klemme High School in 1932.

On Sept. 5, 1935 she was united in marriage to Orville Thomas Stokesbary at Lakota. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Janice, Jerry and Julie, before Orville passed away on Dec 9, 1950.

Following his death, Nova married Leon Karl Gelner on March 2, 1956 at Albert Lea, Minn. They lived in Klemme until her health failed and she became a resident at Concord Care Center in Garner, June 4, 2001.

Nova enjoyed her family and grandchildren, their friends, camping, square dancing, traveling, flowers and their pet cats. She and Leon especially enjoyed the time they spent in the Hawaiian Islands during January and February and had made consecutive trips there for 28 years.

She was a member of the Klemme United Methodist Church and had been a member of UMW and Circle, Square Dancers and Campers, Garden Club and had previously been a Cub Scout Leader and a 4-H Leader.

Those thankful for having shared her life include her husband of 45 years, Leon Gelner, of Klemme; her three children, Janice Janssen and her husband, Marvin, of Garner, Jerry Stokesbary and his wife, Sharon, of Mason City, and Julie Renner and her husband, Bill, of Garner; her eight grandchildren, Dr. Steven Stokesbary and his wife, Sheryl, Jill Thorson and her husband, Todd, Sue Gilland and her husband, Tom, Sandra Schupanitz and her husband, Brent, Jodi Cagle and her husband, Jason, Angela Best and her husband, Michael, Stacie Harrison and her husband, Lance, and Crystal Greiman and her husband, Wade; her 13 great-grandchildren, Abbigayle and Samantha Schupanitz, Makenzie Thorson, Katelyn and Ashley Gilland, Emilie and Maggie Harrison, Nicholas and Jacob Best, Sydnee and Lauren Greiman, Isabel Stokesbary and Connor Cagle; a brother, Gerald Koerner and his wife, Bernice, of Klemme; a sister, Valeria Bridges, of Garner; six sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; 11 nieces and eight nephews. EDNA M. RADCLIFF

MASON CITY - Edna M. Radcliff, 84, formerly of Mason City, died Monday (Dec. 17, 2001) at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, with the Rev. Ronald Stein, of First Baptist Church, officiating.

Visitation will be held from 9 until 10:30 a.m. Friday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S. E. in Mason City.

Edna was born on June 19, 1917 in Aberdeen, S.D. She was later united in marriage to Baird Steece. Baird died on Sept. 2, 1952.

In 1954 Edna was united in marriage to her second husband M.J. "Ping" Radcliff. In 1971 Edna moved to St. Louis, Mo. where she worked at a Marriott Hotel. Edna returned to Mason City in 1982 and lived at 17 Fourth St. N.E. In 1993 she moved to the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

In her younger years Edna enjoyed crocheting, cooking and going to Canada fishing. She was avid about having things very neat and clean. One could often find her with a wet rag in her hand.

Edna is survived by one stepdaughter, Patricia Sturges, of Mason City.

Mrs. Radcliff was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Baird Steece; second husband, M.J. "Ping" Radcliff; one stepson, Freddie Radcliff; and several sisters and brothers.

KENSETT - Paul F. Walk, 75, Kensett, died Monday (Dec. 17, 2001) one and a half miles east of Bolan.

Memorial services which were previously scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, have been changed to 11 a.m. on Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Bolan, with the Rev. Robert Cummings officiating. Inurnment will be in the Kensett Cemetery in Kensett.

Paul was born June 12, 1926 on the family farm, rural Bolan, Iowa, the son of Henry and Louise (Junkermeier) Walk. He attended Bolan country school and Northwood High School.

Paul was united in marriage to Arliene Borchardt on Sept 28, 1952 in the Bolan United Methodist Church in Bolan. To this union six children were born Janiece, Joyce, Judeen, Jerry, Debra and Kevin. They farmed and raised their family east of Bolan.

He enjoyed his family, grandchildren, fishing, woodworking and tinkering around the farm. He was a member of Bolan United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his six children, Janiece Kinzle and her husband Kreg, of Glenwood, Iowa, Joyce Simanton and her husband, Robert, of Niles, Mich., Judeen Keiran and her husband, Craig, of Des Moines, Jerry Walk and his wife, Tracey, of Council Bluffs, Debra Teachout and her husband, Jim, of Amarillo, Texas, and Kevin Walk and his wife, Bonnie, of Glenwood, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

NORA SPRINGS - Marvyl "Sue" Maxine Tanner, 83, Nora Springs died Monday (Dec. 17, 2001) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Friday at the United Methodist Church in Nora Springs with the Rev. Richard Pippert and the Rev. Terra Amundson officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Rockwell Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time on Friday at the church.

The family of Marvyl Maxine "Sue" Tanner has requested that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of North Iowa or to the Marvyl Tanner Memorial Fund, which has been established in her memory.

Marvyl "Sue" Maxine Tanner was born on Jan. 1, 1918, in Sheffield, the daughter of Arnold and Mary (Schulz) Baker. She attended and received her education in the Swaledale school system, graduating from Swaledale High School in 1935.

She was united in marriage to Gordon Tanner in the late 1930's in Swaledale. After their marriage she was a bookkeeper and together with her husband operated creameries in Swaledale, Northwood, Grafton, and Nora Springs, for many years.

Marvyl was also a bookkeeper at the Marigold Dairy in Mason City for 15 years and also worked as a bookkeeper for Lundbergs Clothing Store in Mason City until her retirement.

Camping, bowling and "eating out" were her favorite things to do.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the church circle in Nora Springs.

Left to cherish her memory are her two brothers, Carold Baker and his special friend, Corine, of Waterloo, and Durwood Baker and his wife, LaVonne, of Mason City; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.

Her parents, husband, Gordon Tanner and a daughter, Janet Tanner in 1947, preceded her in death.

MASON CITY - William A. Tiedeman Jr., 80, died Monday (Dec. 17, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A graveside service was held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, with the Rev. Kathy Graves, Hospice of North Iowa chaplain, officiating.

Visitation was held on Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

William Alfred Tiedeman Jr. was born Oct. 1, 1921 in Mason City, the son of William and Rose (Paschka) Tiedeman. He attended Mason City schools and married Valborg "Bobbie" Erickson in 1940.

He served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946 in the 288th Field Artillery Observation 3rd Army with time spent mostly overseas. He was discharged with rating of a Corporal. He was a life member of the V.F.W. William was employed at American Crystal Sugar in Mason City for many years and the Fingerhut Company for two years. He moved to Minnesota in 1975 and worked for Southern Minnesota Sugar Beet Co-op until he retired in 1986 to care for his terminally ill wife who passed away in 1987. He returned to Mason City in 1993.

He will be missed dearly by his brother, Victor Tiedeman, of Mason City; sister-in-law, Doris Tiedeman, of Mason City; brother-in-law, brother-law, E.J. Carol was born on Sept. 20, 1937 at Tracy, Minn., the daughter of Leonard and Gertrude "Hanson" Gullickson. She was a graduate of Tracy High School.

She was employed as the salad lady at the Pheasant Run restaurant, and later for Prime and Wine and Pappa's.

She looked forward to and enthusiastically decorated her home and yard for every season and holiday.

Those thankful in sharing Carol's life include her husband, Donald, of Mason City; two daughters, Vickie Patraw, of St. Paul, Minn., and Shelly Odland and her husband, Craig, of Ramsey, Minn.; one son, Robert Justice, of Mason City; six grandchildren, Aaron and Ryan Patraw, Candice and Andrea Goddard, and Margaret and Maya Justice; two sisters, Sharon and her husband, Bill Hanson, of New Ulm, Minn., and Sandra and her husband, Reinhardt Brunn, of Hinckley, Minn.; and one brother, Donald and his wife, Nan Gullickson, of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Duane Gullickson.
