SHIRLEY ALICE FOSSEY

ST. ANSGAR - Shirley Alice Fossey, 82, passed away Sunday (Dec. 2, 2001) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage, surrounded by members of her loving family.

Her funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in the First Lutheran Cemetery in St. Ansgar.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar.

Shirley was born in what is now known as the Blue Belle Inn. St. Ansgar, on March 9, 1919, the daughter of Sherwin and Irma (Lubiens) Kleinwort. She was jointed in marriage to Oliver A. Fossey on Feb. 19, 1938.

Shirley was known as a trailblazer and moved through uncharted waters while pursuing a career and raising eight children. This was during the early 1940s, when women were not known to work outside the home. Shirley would be described as kind, gentle and giving.

In addition, she was an intelligent, strong minded, and determined individual. One of her early careers was a door-to-door magazine salesperson. Imagine a woman in those days being successful in a man's world, driving a company car, while taking care of a husband and eight children. Shirley worked outside the home at various careers until her retirement in 1974.

One of the things that Shirley enjoyed most was to have family gatherings. The size of her family grew and grew as the children married and grandchildren as well as great-grandchildren came along.

She had a total of 27 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. It would not be unusual to see her standing at the stove with one grandchild in her arm, another at her knee, while she stirred her family's favorite gravy.

Her ginger snaps and chocolate chip cookies were known nationwide and perhaps worldwide. She would send homemade cookies back to school or on trips with her grandchildren whenever or wherever possible. Many homes, dorms, and military barracks have had the benefit of Grandma Fossey's cookies.

During her life, she raised her children to be independent, caring, hardworking and honest. She set the example for her children. And yet, as busy as she was, we always knew she was there to support and stand by her children whatever the challenge.

In addition to her career, Shirley could always be found at an athletic event that was being played by her family members. She was fortunate to attend state tournaments in boys and girls basketball, wrestling, and track in which her grandchildren participated. It was these types of events she looked forward to from season to season.

Shirley also followed professional sports, and attended the World Series. It was not unheard of that she put a person calling on hold while she finished watching a touchdown run by her favorite college or pro team.

Shirley's favorite past times in addition to baking, were fishing and playing cards. She could always be counted on for a good game of cards played by her own rules.

Shirley is survived by one sister, Gladys K.
