HAMPTON - Delores T. Mott, 77, of Hampton, died Sunday (Dec. 9, 2001) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, East Campus, in Mason City.

Her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, with the Rev. Steven Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Hampton Cemetery.

MASON CITY - Joe E. Lyons, 74, of 1423 N. President Ave., died Sunday (Dec. 9, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Faith Baptist Church, 1807 S. Kentucky Ave., with the Rev. Miles Grismore officiating.

LAKE MILLS - Betty Beatrice (Pugh) Sarno, 84, of West Des Moines and formerly of Lake Mills, died Sunday (Dec. 9, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lake Mills, with Father Craig Steimel officiating and military rites conducted by Lake Mills Otto/Chose Post 235. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

DUMONT - Ruby Ina Steinman, 95, of Dumont, died Monday (Dec. 10, 2001) at Lockwood, Mo.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the New Hope United Methodist Church in Dumont, with the Rev. Michael Shaffer officiating. Burial will be in Dumont Cemetery in Dumont.

CLIFFORD LATHAM

MASON CITY - Clifford Latham, 73, died of cancer Sunday (Dec. 9, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

His funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Church of the Nazarene, 509 S. Carolina Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Curtis DeLong officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, and one hour prior to service at the church.

He was born in Mason City, on Dec. 29, 1927, to Charles and Margaret (Klever) Latham. Shortly after his birth, they moved to Missouri to start a life on the farm.

After 12 years in Missouri, they moved back to Mason City, where he later met and married Ruth Peterson on Feb. 20, 1950. The wedding took place in Sioux Falls, S.D., but they resided in Mason City all their married years.

Cliff worked as an automobile mechanic and retired from Price Motors in 1993. He was an active member of the First Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; one son, Dan, and his wife, Debi, of Coral Springs, Fla.; and three granddaughters, Megan, of New York City, and Jillian and Mackenzie, of Coral Springs, Fla., and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Margaret Latham.

KENNES E. KINGLAND

FOREST CITY - Kennes E. Kingland, 83, of Forest City, died Sunday (Dec. 9, 2001) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with the Rev. Merlin Norris and the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be at Elim Lutheran Cemetery in rural Forest City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City and one hour prior services on Wednesday at the church.

The family requests memorials be directed to Fertile Lutheran Church, the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City or to the Parkinson's Foundation.

Kennes E. Kingland was born in Mt. Valley Township in Forest City on Sept. 24, 1918, the son of Joseph and Emma (Hanson) Kingland. Kennes attended rural schools in Mt. Valley Township and graduated from Forest City High School.

On June 7, 1942, he married Alice K. Kilen of Lake Mills. They farmed east of Forest City until 1984, when they retired to an acreage east of Pilot Knob State Park. Kennes was well known for his priorities of faith, family and farming.

He and Alice are members of Fertile Lutheran Church. He contributed to the church in many ways, including teaching Sunday school and serving on the Church Council.

He also served his community as a 4-H leader, co-op elevator board member, Farmer's Home Administration Board member and active Farm Bureau member.

Kennes was one of the first farmers to adopt modern Soil Conservation Service practices. He and his family operated a diversified grain and livestock farm.

After retirement, Kennes and Alice enjoyed gardening and watching birds and other wildlife on their acreage, although having grandchildren visit was their favorite activity.

Survivors include his wife, Alice, of Forest City; four children and their spouses, David and Susan Kingland, of Forest City, their children, Denise, of San Francisco, and Eric and his wife, Shelly, and their daughter, Makayla, of Forest City, Deacon Olesen, of Orlando, Fla., and Joseph Kingland, currently serving in the Navy; Nancy and Charles Sweetman, of Mason City and their daughter, Melba Ruiz, of Albuquerque, N.M., and children, Alfonso and Celia; Ronald and Sandra Kingland, of Owatonna, Minn., and their children, Michael and his wife, Stephanie, and children, Matthew and Scott Kingland, of Owatonna, Minn., Kari Cruz and husband, Victor, and baby on the way, of St. Paul, Minn.; Marvin and Mary Kingland, of Hanlontown, and their children, Emily Beenken and husband, Brandon, of Woden, and Katherine and Rebecca Kingland, of Hanlontown; two brothers, Oral Kingland and wife, Alice, of Forest City, and Quentin Kingland and wife, Laverna, of Loveland, Colo.; and three sisters, Eva Kingland of New Brighton, Minn., Rachel Holland, of Mason City, and Emilie Conklin and husband, Allan, of New Brighton, Minn.. and many relatives and friends.

HERBERT L. ROD

MASON CITY - Herbert L. Rod, 83, of 34 Kentucky Court, died Saturday (Dec. 8, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. James M. Magelssen and the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating.

Interment will be at 11 a.m.on Friday in Luthern Cemetery in Decorah.

There will be no visitation. Mr. Rod's request was to be cremated.

Memorials may be given to KCMR Radio or Lutheran College Library.

Herbert L. Rod was born May 4, 1918, in Roland, the son of M.O. and Ada (Birkeland) Rod. He was baptized and confirmed at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland. He graduated from Roland High School in 1936. He attended Luther College in Decorah for two years as a member of the class of 1943.

Herb was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941 and served with the 27th Armored Infantry Battalion in the European Theatre during World War II. During the Battle of the Bulge, he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged from the Army as a first lieutenant in 1947.

Herb was united in marriage to Norene Kaasa at Bergen Lutheran Church in Roland on April 24, 1944. Following his discharge from the Army, he completed his college education at the University of Iowa, earning a B.A. degree in 1949.

Herb and Norene moved to Ames, then to Mason City, where he worked for the federal government. In 1956, they moved to Iowa City where Herb did graduate work in history and economics. Two years later, Herb joined the faculty of Luther College in Decorah, where he taught economics and worked in the administration for nine years.

In 1967, they returned to Mason City, where Herb completed his government career, retiring in 1978. Herb was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, loved reading and history, and collected a large and varied library during the course of his life.

Herb is survived by his wife of 57 years, Norene Rod, of Mason City; four children, David Rod and his wife, Bette, of Coralville; Carolyn of Decorah; Janice, of St. Cloud, Minn., and Martha of Fort Atkinson, Wis.; three grandchildren, Charles, Joel and Emily Rod; one brother, Donald, of Ames, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Mary; sister, Dorothy; three brothers, Ernest, Ingvald and Paul, and three nephews, James, Michael and William.

MARIE LORENE BUCKLAND

MASON CITY - Marie Lorene Buckland, 96, of 324 Second St. N.E., died Sunday (Dec. 9, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave., with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Marie L. Buckland Memorial Fund.

Marie Lorene Buckland was born July 24, 1905, in Mason City, the daughter of Elmer E. and C. Audrey (McGowan) Russell. She attended school in Mason City and was a life-long resident.

Marie married Bernard John Buckland in October 1926. Following his death, she married Joseph Buckland on Nov. 11, 1933.

Marie was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Naomi Circle, L.W.M.L. and the Good Shepherd Auxiliary.

Marie is survived by her children, Bonnie J. Marker and her husband, Ralph, of Mason City; Elsie M. Hampton and her husband, Paul W., of Pharr, Texas; Lynn R. Buckland and his wife, Elizabeth, of West Des Moines; Joan J. Sutcliffe and husband, Richard, of Horseshoe Bend, Ark.; Gene L. Buckland and his wife, Patsy, of Pontiac, Ill.; daughter-in-law, Darlene Buckland, of Mason City; brother, Donald B. Russell, of Charles City; 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.

Marie was preceded in death by her two husbands; son, Bernard J. Buckland; two brothers, Robert and Mervell; grandson, Michael Marker, and two great-granddaughters, Amy and Jessica Fangman.

LEONARD L. MANSON

VENTURA - Leonard L. Manson, 80, of 1 Third St. in Ventura, died Sunday (Dec. 9, 2001) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Evangelical Free Church in Clear Lake, with Pastor David Wiersbe and Pastor Randy Vaage officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt, where military honors will be conducted.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, and also for one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Leonard L. Manson Memorial Fund.

Leonard was born Sept. 13, 1921, in rural Manchester, the son of Elmer and Emma (Swanson) Manson. He graduated from Dundee High School and then worked as a hired man from 1939 until 1942. Leonard served in the United States Navy during World War II.

For 38 months, he served as a cook while stationed in the Hawaiian Islands. After his discharge, he again worked as a hired man from 1947 until 1949.

Leonard was united in marriage to Alice Madson on June 5, 1948, at the Evangelical Free Church in Britt. They farmed in Delaware County from 1949 until 1970.

In 1970, Leonard moved with his wife to Clear Lake to become the managers of the United Methodist Camp. They retired after managing the camp for 14 years. Leonard enjoyed gardening, flowers, bird watching and reading.

He also liked to watch sports and was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Vikings fan.

Leonard was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Clear Lake.

Leonard is survived by five children, Lance A. Manson, and his wife, Jan, of New Hampton; Craig L. Manson and his wife, LeAnn, of Edgar, Wis.; Neal P. Manson and his wife, LaRee, of Marathon, Wis.; Lenice A. Lee and her husband, Daniel, of Huxley, and Sherilyn S. Theel, and her husband, Darin, of Forest City; 10 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and three brothers, the Rev. Harold Manson and his wife, Jean, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Kenneth Manson and his wife, Betty, of Dallas, Texas, and Elmer Manson and his wife, Doris, of Manchester.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Alice on June 8, 2001.

HELEN L. FRITZ

MASON CITY - Helen L. Fritz, 83, of 109 15th St. N.E., died Sunday (Dec. 9, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling and the Rev. Bill Safranek officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

Helen was born Jan. 17, 1918, at Minneapolis, a daughter of Daniel and Nellie (Guldbretson) Garvey.

Helen attended Manly schools, and was a graduate of Manly High School.

On Nov. 11, 1940, she was united in marriage to Elmer J. Fritz at Manly.

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, where she was a member of St. Elizabeth's Circle.

Survivors include her loving husband, Elmer, of Mason City; three daughters, Patti Gribben and her husband, Pat, of Mason City; Kathy Haes and her husband, Mick, of Minneapolis, Mary Myklestad and her husband, Jim, of Mason City; one son, John Fritz, and his wife, Christina, of Mason City; six grandchildren, Theresa Blume, Jerry Gribben, Steven Haes, Shelley Rhymers, Laurie Myklestad and Lisa Johnson; and eight great-grandchildren, Samantha, Isaac, Nicholas, Jacob, Lauren, Katelyn, Madeline and Meredith.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mary Jane and Mildred, and three brothers, William, Richard and Timothy.

HILTON ROSS WILLCOX

YUCCA VALLEY, Calif. - Hilton Ross Willcox, 76, of Yucca Valley, Calif., died Wednesday (Nov. 28, 2001) at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, Calif.

A memorial gathering will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Preston residence, 6312 Grant Court, Chino, Calif. There will be private interment.

Wiefels and Son Funeral Home, Palm Springs, Calif., was in charge of arrangements.

Hilton Ross Willcox was born July 11, 1925, to Ora Glenn and May Adeline (Weir) Willcox.

He was a champion wrestler in the Mason City High School Class of 1943. He was also a Golden Glove boxer. He served in the Army during World War II.

On Aug. 12, 1946, he was united in marriage to Maxine Jones. He retired from Freightliner Corporation after 25 years as a machinist.

Mr. Willcox raced stock cars in North Iowa. He enjoyed building dune buggies, taking them to the sand dunes with his motor home. He liked to take his family boating, swimming and skiing. He never missed a NASCAR race and visited many racetracks. Most of all he loved his family.

Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl Charlier and husband, Alan, and Linda Preston and husband, Rodney; five grandchildren, Lynda Kaizer, Dana Caldwell, Jennifer Storino, Billy Preston and Mike Charlier, and five great-grandchildren, all of California; one brother, Harry Willcox and wife, Betty, of Mason City, and a nephew, Dennis Willcox and wife, Yvonne, of Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.

THOMAS VOLLRATH

CHARLES CITY - Thomas Vollrath, 48, of 800 First Ave., Charles City, died Friday (Dec. 7, 2001) at the Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kan.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S Main in Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Fullerton Hage Fullerton Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City, with visitation continuing one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.

Thomas was born in Ceylon, Minn., on April 1, 1953, the son of John William "Jack" and Anna (Peters) Vollrath. He attended and graduated from Ceylon High School. Thomas then went on to continue his education at the Rochester Institute, graduating with a four-year degree in chemistry.

Thomas enjoyed the little things in life and was a simple man. He liked to golf, hunt for deer and pheasant, and was a jack of all trades. He loved traveling and being with his family. Thomas was a collector, always finding a little treasure in everything.

Thomas will be remembered as a wonderful person, father and friend to his two daughters, Faith-Ann Mae White and her husband, Aaron, and their son, Gage, of Charles City, and Christina Lee Vollrath, of Charles City; one sister, Virginia Hatland, of Doliver, Iowa; and girlfriend, Anna Christine Johnson.

Thomas was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents, William and Anna, and wife Toni Vollrath Harris in April of 1993.

J. C. 'SWEDE' BLACKBURN

BRITT - J. C. "Swede" Blackburn, 99, of Britt, passed away Sunday (Dec. 9, 2001) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services for Swede Blackburn will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Britt with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating.

Friends may greet the family from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Ewing Funeral Home in Britt and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

J.C. "Swede" Blackburn was born in Wilcox, Neb., on Feb. 25. 1902. He was the son of Fred and Agnes Samson Blackburn. He was married to Elizabeth (Beth) Abraham in Smith Center, Kan., on Aug. 20, 1924.

They made their home on a farm near Campbell, Neb., struggling through the drought and the dust bowl of the early 1930s. In 1939 they moved to a farm near Earlham, Iowa, and in 1942, against all odds, they purchased a 240-acre farm in that area.

In 1951 they bought a farm near Britt, and purchased their present farm north of Britt in 1964 where they built their present home. In his later years, he and the late Curtis Rhiem, as partners, bought and sold a number of farms and real estate.

Swede was an active member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and belonged to the United Methodist Church of Britt.

He loved the land, farming, fishing and gardening. He was an avid card player and was well known at the local cribbage tournaments.

Above all, he was a man of integrity who was steadfast in his loyalty to his family and friends.

He is survived by two daughters, Jo Tolley, of Cape May, N.J., and Beverlee Burnet, of Britt, who has made her home with Swede for the last 20 years; his brother, Ralph, and his sister, Nina and Vearl Jensen, of Hastings, Neb.; one sister-in-law, Maxine Thomsen, of Springfield, Mo.; 10 grandchildren, Joyce and Nick Weiskopf, of New York, N.Y., Kim and Jeffrey Gibbons, of Cape May, N.J., Carol and Tom Hastings, of Princeton, N.J., and Cindy Tolley, of North Cape May, N.J., Michelle and Malcolm Leonard, of Wilmington, N.C., Pam and Alex Biro, of New Orleans, Wendy and Dave Ohman, of Lake Bluff, Ill., Douglas Burnet and fiancée, Rebecca Willden, of San Francisco, Donald and Leslie Burnet, of Los Angeles, Jennifer and Luc Esteva, of Los Angeles; 18 great-grandchildren; three nieces, Sue Shreck, of Las Vegas, Jeanne and Dick Foote, of Reeds Spring, Mo., and Judy and Jim Vokac, of Oak Brook, Ill.; and two nephews, Don and Pat Holt and Jim and Laurie Holt, of Omaha, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beth, in 2000; his parents; two sisters (one in infancy); two brothers; a son-in-law, Bill Tolley, in 2001; one nephew, Bill Dawson; and a great- grandson, Ned Tolley Gibbons, in 1994.

BETTY BEATRICE SARNO

LAKE MILLS - Betty Beatrice (Pugh) Sarno, 84 of West Des Moines, formerly of Lake Mills, Iowa died Sunday (Dec. 9, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lake Mills, with Father Craig Steimel officiating and with Military Rites by Lake Mills Otto/Chose Post #235. Burial will be at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills with a 6 p.m. wake service.

Betty Beatrice Pugh was born on Oct. 5, 1917, in Milford, Iowa. She graduated from high school in Milford, and then received her degree as a registered nurse from Methodist Hospital in Sioux City in 1939.

After working in Sioux City as a nurse, she enlisted in the United States Army in 1941, and served as a registered nurse in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Fort Benning, Ga., attaining a rank of first lieutenant.

While at Fort Benning, Betty met Eugene G. Sarno who was serving in the Army Criminal Investigation Corps. They were married on Sept. 13, 1945, in Columbus, Ga.

Following World War II, Betty and Eugene moved to Eugene's home in New York City where Betty worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital in the Bronx.

In 1946, they moved to Des Moines where Betty worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital and Eugene attended Drake University School of Law.

In 1949, they moved to Lake Mills where Eugene opened his law practice and their son, Eugene Michael, was born. While living in Lake Mills, Betty worked as a registered nurse at the Forest City Hospital, Naeve Hospital in Albert Lea, Minn., and as a nursing supervisor at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City, retiring in 1974.

During their residence in Lake Mills, Betty and Eugene cherished the community and their fine friends. In 1994, Betty moved to West Des Moines to reside closer to her son and his family. She died on Dec. 9, 2001.

Betty influenced the lives of many. She is best remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. As a nurse, Betty provided compassionate care to those in need.

She was a civic leader and active member of Saint Patrick's Catholic Church.

Being an avid bridge player, Betty was constantly involved with her many card groups. Her friends can relate numerous stories about her adventures at the bridge table.

Betty and Gene loved to travel, and over the years they saw much of the world. Despite her far-ranging travels, the most enjoyable trip for Betty was visiting her childhood haunts at Lake Okoboji. Betty's ultimate love was her family of which she was extremely proud.

Betty P. Sarno was preceded in death by her parents, Icle (Hansen) Pugh and Jesse Pugh; and her husband, Eugene Sarno, whom she missed dearly.

She is survived by her son, Dr. E. Michael Sarno; her daughter-in law, Georgia Sarno, both of West Des Moines; her grandchildren, Christopher Sarno and his wife, Samara, of Coralville, Bradley Sarno, of Denver, Colo., and Laura Sarno, of West Des Moines.

MASON CITY - Harold E. "Willie" Mansmith, 85, of 630 Briarstone Drive in Mason City, died Monday (Dec. 10, 2001) at his home.

Harold E. "Willie" Mansmith was born July 11, 1916 in, Hartley, the son of Wilbur and Ora (Beddow) Mansmith. Willie married Gladys L. Schultz on November 6, 1939, in Mason City.

He entered the U.S. Army February 3, 1943, and received his honorable discharge from the Army October 25, 1945. Willie was a POW for six months in Czechoslovakia and was released on May 5, 1945.

In 1949, Willie began his career with Interstate Power Co. as a fireman's helper. In 1951 he was promoted to auxiliary operator and in 1967 advanced to turbine operator. He retired on Aug. 1, 1978.

Willie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, life member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War, D.A.V., V.F.W., Moose Lodge #1328, received the Bronze Star and was a member of the American Legion.

Willie enjoyed sports, woodworking and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

Willie is survived by a daughter, Sheryl Weiner and her husband, Gary, of Cartersville; grandchildren, Matthew Weiner and wife, Christine, of St. Louis Park, Minn., Brenton Weiner, of Cartersville, Sarah Weiner, of Cartersville, and Lindsay Weiner, of Cartersville; brother, Donald Tosevigen, of Plymouth; a sister, Lorraine Klemensen and husband, Harold, of Clarion; and several nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY - Joe E. Lyons, 74, of 1423 N. President Ave., died Sunday morning (Dec. 9, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at Faith Baptist Church, 1807 S. Kentucky Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Miles Grismore officiating.

There will be no visitation. He was cremated at Cremation Services of North Iowa.

Joe was born one of nine children to Homer and Atha G. "Walzgenot" Lyons on March 29, 1927, at Beaucoup, Ill. in Washington County. He attended school in Clear Lake and graduated. He studied religion at Bethany, Okla., for three years.

He joined the U.S. Navy and served his country honorably on tankers in the Pacific Theater from May 1945 until June 1947 when he was discharged.

Joe was self-employed with a painting and wallpaper business all over the central United States.

He was united in marriage to Erna (Luke) Bruggeman on July 3, 1973, in Reno, Nev. In 1989 he retired and they moved to Mason City. He then worked as a greeter at Wal-Mart where he fulfilled his love of being around people.

He was a member of Faith Baptist Church where he was active in the adult Sunday school, and the VFW. He was an active member of the Lion's Club in Texas and served as the Commander of the American Legion in Lakeview, Minn.

In his early years he hunted mostly for pheasant and deer. Joe was always puttering with things and enjoyed collecting antiques and a wide variety of other items.

He was very outgoing and enjoyed making daily trips to the 5:15 a.m. coffee group at Pro's. Joe enjoyed flower gardening and debating with other people.

Those thankful in sharing Joe's life include his wife, Erna, of Mason City; four daughters, Lynnn Gay Johns, of Ridgecrest, Calif.; Pamela Joy Miller, of Littleton, Colo.; Sherry and her husband, Michael LaSart, of Greeley, Colo.; Dianne Luke, of Orlando, Fla.; two sons, Dennis Joe and his wife, Ann Lyons, of Colfax, Calif., and Bill and his wife, Diane Luke, of St. Paul, Minn.; 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Ann Geske, of Las Vegas. L. Marjorie Hubbard was born March 18, 1905, in Cowgill, Mo. the daughter of John Harsha and Fannie Scott (Lundington) Whisitt.

In 1916 the family moved to Iowa Falls where she graduated from high school. She went on to further her education at Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls.

She was united in marriage to Charles Porter Hubbard on June 15, 1936 ,in Mason City. She worked for 40 years as a gift buyer for Yelland and Hanes. She retired in 1975.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, PEO - Chapter KX, and White Shrine - York Rite.

She enjoyed helping at the church and playing cards. She also looked forward to delivering books to the Heritage Care Center each week.

She is survived by her niece, Sandy Taylor and husband, Bob, of Bloomington, Ind.; a niece and nephew by marriage, Barbara Hubbard, of Berkeley, Calif.; Tom Hubbard and wife, Dorie, of Berea, Ky.; great-nieces, Shelly Taylor and husband, James Russell and daughter Isabelle, Jan Schultz and husband, Wade, and son, Benton; great-nieces by marriage, Christie and Susan Hubbard.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband on Nov. 22, 2000; and a sister, Claudina Wood.

WILMA F. CLINE

MASON CITY - Wilma F. Cline, 82, of Lake Geneva, Wis., formerly of Mason City, died Tuesday (Dec. 11, 2001) at Sienna Meadows Care Center, Lake Geneva, Wis.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. on Friday (Dec. 14, 2001) at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. Mason City, with the Rev. Douglas Anderson, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery on Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel.

Wilma was born June 11, 1919, on a farm in Twin Lake Township near Goodell, a daughter of John and Wilhelmina (Sandersfeld) Swalve. She attended the rural school near her parents home and continued her studies at Klemme High School, graduating in May of 1937.

After graduation she worked at Larsen's Meat Market in Klemme. From there she went to Omaha to work, and returned to Clear Lake in 1950 and worked at Damon's Department Store, in Mason City until 1957. She worked at Montgomery Ward for two years.

In 1959 she married Harry L. Cline at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They lived in Mason City and she worked at Raizes' Department Store, until they closed. She then worked with her husband's business, Cline's Floor Covering, until his death in 1992.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

She loved crafts, making quilts, crocheting, and baking and cooking. She was very interested in her family. She especially enjoyed traveling and spent winters in Weslaco, Texas until Mr. Cline's health kept them at home.

Survivors include two sons, Randall Odegaard and his wife, Carol, of Lake Geneva, Wis., and Ronald Cline and his wife, Betsy, of Mason, Mich.; one daughter, Bonnie Rawding, of Mason City; five grandchildren, Christopher and Jennifer Odegaard, both of Lake Geneva, Wis.; Jason Cline, of Ypsilanti, Mich.; Alysia Scofield, of Durham, N.C.; Alana Sankey, of Cedar Falls; four great-grandchildren, Brynna Sankey, Ethan Sankey, Nancy Scofield, and Abraham Scofield; one brother, Raymond Swalve, in California.

On Nov. 11, 1940, she was united in marriage to Elmer J. Fritz at Manly.

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, where she was a member of St. Elizabeth's Circle.

Survivors include her loving husband, Elmer, of Mason City; three daughters, Patti Gribben and her husband, Pat, of Mason City; Kathy Haes and her husband, Mick, of Minneapolis, Mary Myklestad and her husband, Jim, of Mason City; one son, John Fritz, and his wife, Christina, of Mason City; six grandchildren, Theresa Blume, Jerry Gribben, Steven Haes, Shelley Rhymers, Laurie Myklestad and Lisa Johnson; and eight great-grandchildren, Samantha, Isaac, Nicholas, Jacob, Lauren, Katelyn, Madeline and Meredith.

Thomas was born in Ceylon, Minn., on April 11, 1953, the son of John William "Jack" and Anna (Peters) Vollrath. He attended and graduated from Ceylon High School.

Thomas then went on to continue his education at the Rochester Institute, graduating with a four-year degree in chemistry.

Thomas enjoyed the little things in life and was a simple man. He liked to golf, hunt for deer and pheasant and was a jack of all trades. He loved traveling and being with his family. Thomas was a collector, always finding a little treasure in everything.

Thomas will be remembered as a wonderful person, father and friend to his two daughters, Faith-Ann Mae White and her husband, Aaron, and their son, Gage, of Charles City, and Christina Lee Vollrath, of Charles City; one sister, Virginia Hatland, of Doliver; and girlfriend, Anna Christine Johnson.

Thomas was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, William and Anna; former wife, Toni Vollrath Harris in April of 1993.

Everett R. Beisel was born April 9, 1922, in Mason City, the son of Reinhard and Alvena (Marquardt) Beisel. He attended Mason City schools.

Following school he entered the United States Army, serving his country during World War II.

Following his discharge from the Army, he married Neva A. Higley. They were united in marriage on Jan. 1, 1947, in Mason City. They moved to Zumbrota, Minn., in 1955, where he farmed. They returned to Mason City in 1959.

He was a carpenter and a draftsman, working for Davey and Moen and the Mason City School System. He retired in 1970.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the VFW. He enjoyed wood crafting and fishing.

Those left to cherish his memory include a daughter, Gloria J. Warren and husband, John, of Shafter, Calif.; grandson, Samuel E. Katter and wife, Nicole, of Garner; sister, Betty Bratrud, of Kensett; brother, Harold Beisel, of Tomball, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Louise was born April 16, 1913, in Delhi, Iowa, the daughter of William and Logina (Meiners) Reth.

She was united in marriage to Ed Ashland on June 5, 1938, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. They lived on a farm near Clear Lake, where Louise was a homemaker who also worked for 14 years as a cook for several restaurants and businesses in Mason City and Clear Lake.

She enjoyed baking, gardening, quilting, embroidery and other handiwork. Louise moved from the farm to the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City in 1995.

She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, a member of the WLAM Club in Clear Lake and a 4-H leader in Cerro Gordo County.

Louise is survived by five children, Alice Rasmussen and her husband, Ken, of Des Moines, Richard Ashland and his wife, Susan, of Fridley, Minn., Melvin Ashland and his wife, Brooke, of Medford, Ore., Roger Ashland and his wife, Cynthia, of Waseca, Minn., and Allan Ashland and his wife, Nancy, of Clear Lake; 16 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters; five brothers, and many other relatives and friends.

CLEAR LAKE - Margaret K. Anderson, 87, died Tuesday (Dec. 11, 2001) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7:30 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Margaret was born July 13, 1914, in Thornton, the daughter of Elmer and Lela (Floy) Nelson. She went to country school and graduated from Thornton High School in 1931.

On Dec. 15, 1935, Margaret married Marvin Anderson in Thornton. They moved to a farm near Swaledale in 1936. In 1948 they moved to Clear Lake. Margaret worked at the Clear lake Bakery from 1954-1959. She then worked part-time at several cafes in Clear Lake.

Margaret enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and visiting with her friends and having coffee, and going for car rides. She also enjoyed going to the Do Day Club at church where they made quilts, and knitting Afghans for family and friends. She also enjoyed watching baseball.

Margaret was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Hope Circle.

Margaret is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Levenhagen, Des Moines; three sons, Gary Anderson, of Clear Lake, Dennis Anderson and his wife, Marcia, of Clear Lake, and David Anderson and his wife, Judy, of Clear Lake; nine grandchildren, Sherri Olson and her husband, Todd, Nicole Lyon and her husband, Mike, Travis Anderson, Jason Anderson and his wife, Rachel, Joel Anderson and Jody Davis, Jacob Anderson, Scott Hakes and his special friend, Ellen, Jaime Hakes, and Jennifer Allen; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother-in-law, Floyd Harms and his wife, Mary, of Mason City; special friend, Linda Bowers and her husband, David, of Clear Lake; two nieces and spouses, and two nephews and spouses.

MASON CITY - Everett R. Beisel, 79, of Mason City, died on Sunday (Dec. 9, 2001) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Samuel Hamilton-Poore of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Visitation was held on Thursday at the funeral home and will continue today until time of services.

Memorials may be given to the Everett R. Beisel Memorial Fund.

Everett R. Beisel was born April 9, 1922, in Mason City, the son of Reinhard and Neva A. (Higley) Beisel. He attended Mason City schools.

Following school he entered the United States Army, serving his country during World War II.

Following his discharge from the Army, he married Alvena Marquardt. They were united in marriage on Jan. 1, 1947, in Mason City. They moved to Zumbrota, Minn., in 1955, where he farmed. They returned to Mason City in 1959.

He was a carpenter and a draftsman, working for Davey and Moen and the Mason City school system. He retired in 1970.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the VFW. He enjoyed wood crafting and fishing.

Those left to cherish his memory include a daughter, Gloria J. Warren and husband, John, of Shafter, Calif.; grandson, Samuel E. Katter and wife, Nicole, of Garner; sister, Betty Bratrud, of Kensett; brother, Harold Beisel, of Tomball, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two sons, Mark Everett and Howard Mark, and son-in-law, Arthur H. Katter.

SYLVESTER J. 'SONNY' DASCH

MANLY - Sylvester J. "Sonny" Dasch, 64, of Manly, died Wednesday (Dec. 12, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly, with the Rev. David Kucera officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Manly, with military graveside honors by the Edward Tosel American Legion Post 110 in Manly.

Friends may call from 5 until 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St. in Manly, with a public scripture wake service at 6 p.m.

The family of Sylvester J. "Sonny" Dasch has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Sylvester J. "Sonny" Dasch Memorial Fund, which has been established in his memory.

Sylvester J. "Sonny" Dasch was born on March 1, 1937, in Osage, the son of John and Mabel (Blonigan) Dasch. Sylvester "Sonny" was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Catholic Church in New Haven.

He attended and received his education in the Rudd Community Schools from 1946 until 1953. He also attended and graduated from Holy Family Catholic High School in 1956.

After graduating from High School he was inducted into the U.S. Navy in 1956, serving aboard the U.S.S. Intrepid and the U.S.S. Roosevelt until his honorable discharge in 1960. While in the Navy Sonny received an airline mechanic certificate.

Sonny and his friend Helen bought and the ran the Rail Club until their business burned in Manly's big fire in 1964. Not willing to give up, Sonny, along with his father and friends, tore down three burned buildings and a new Rail Club became Manly's hot spot.

Sonny also worked at Deckers Meats in Mason City, Ruan in Hanlontown, and Whitt Farms on B-20 in Mason City, retiring after a long battle with cancer.

Sonny was happiest when he was sitting in the seat of a huge "John Deere." Sonny also earned a small mechanic degree from N.I.A.C.C. in Mason City.

He was united in marriage to Helen Ulrich on June 5, 1962, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly.

Sonny loved auctions, camping, trout fishing and people. He also did snow removal for many people around Manly and raised sweet corn and horseradish.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and the Edward Tosel American Legion Post 110, in Manly and the Moose Lodge in Mason City.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Helen (Coffee Lady), of Manly; children, Wanda McLaughlin and her husband, Patrick, of Manly, Michael Ulrich and his wife, Janet, of Mason City, and Sonja Dasch-Lawson and her husband, Mark, of Plymouth; grandchildren, Joshua Fredrickson, and his wife, Crystal, of Winder, Ga., Rachel Fredrickson, of Ames, Jordan McLaughlin, of Manly, Amanda Ulrich, of Mason City, Cassidey Lawson, and Morgan Lawson, both of Plymouth; great-granddaughter, Melanie of Winder, Ga.; mother-in-law, Irene Cilfone, of Manly; sisters, Theresa "Terry" Gifford and husband, James, of Mason City, Camilla Ent and husband, James, of Grinnell, and Nancy Wasicek, of Mason City; a brother, Gary Dasch and his wife, Janet, of Mason City; sister-in-law, Lorie Dasch, of Des Moines; 12 nieces and nephews, many cousins and dear friends, especially Chuck and Sandy Whitt and family of Mason City.

Dean was born May 28, 1928, at Swanville, Minn., the son of A. W. and Cyrilla (Lang) Francis. He graduated from Stewartville, Minn., High School in 1946 and graduated from University of Minnesota with a bachelor of arts degree.

Dean moved to New York in the early 1950s, where he worked in the theatre and then, in the 1960s until his retirement in 1993, worked for a television production company. After retiring he moved to Fort Lee.

Dean was very supportive of his family, especially his sons, and he will be sorely missed.

PLYMOUTH - Ruth Alice Schmidt, 83, of the Plymouth Manor Apartments, Plymouth, was called home to be with the Lord on Thursday (Dec. 13, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Ruth was born June 8, 1918 the daughter of Glenn and Bertha (Bingham) Smith in St. James, Minn. She attended public school in St. James. Ruth later moved from Minnesota to Iowa where she had lived for 40 years.

During her lifetime she loved to collect antiques. She enjoyed using her newfound treasurers to decorate her home. One would often find her tending to her flower gardens. Her flowers were very important to her as she often used them to enhance her home.

Ruth spent many hours enjoying nature on her regular walks. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family.

Florence Anna Bottleman was born Sept. 1, 1920 in Otranto Township, Mitchell County, to William and Matilda (Hanson) Gentz.

She married Elmer Bottleman on July 1, 1942 in Unionville, Mo. She raised her family and worked alongside her husband, Elmer, on the farm for 26 years. After moving to town in 1967 she worked at Mercy Hospital as a nursing assistant. She also worked at Carroll George Inc. until retiring.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

TOM VON TERSCH

OSAGE - Tom Von Tersch, 62, of Osage, died Thursday (Dec. 13, 2001) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice Unit in Osage, of cancer.

He was born Oct. 25, 1939 at Omaha, Neb., the son of William and Cecilia (Smith) Von Tersch. He moved to Osage with his family in 1946 at the age of 7.

Tom attended Osage schools and graduated from Osage High School in 1957. He went to Loras College, graduated from NIACC, and then continued his education and graduated from the Wisconsin Institute of Mortuary Science in 1965.

Tom was employed at the Champion Funeral Home as a funeral director for 35 years. He became part owner with Tom Bucheit in 1980. Tom retired in March of 2000.

He was united in marriage to Marilyn Lewis on Aug. 13, 1960. He was an avid race fan. His friends called him Harry.

He enjoyed golfing, canoeing, and as he termed it, recreational mowing.

He was a member of the Iowa Funeral Director's Association and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

MILDRED HONE BERRY

HAMPTON - Mildred Hone Berry, 84, of Hampton, died Friday (Dec. 14, 2001) at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hampton, with Father Jim Miller officiating. Inurnment will be in Hampton Cemetery in Hampton.

Mildred Hone Berry was born Sept. 21, 1917 in Mason City, a daughter of George William and Elizabeth C. (Crawford) Van Every. She was raised in Mason City and was a graduate of Mason City High School.

She was united in marriage to Joseph E. Berry on June 12, 1941 in Mason City. She was employed at Hampton Tax Service for 25 years. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

She enjoyed her grandchildren, enjoyed e-mailing family and friends.

Survivors include three sons, Michael William Berry, of Whitewater, Wis., Thomas W. Berry, of Hampton, and Patrick J. Berry, of Kirkland, Wash.; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one sister.

MAUMELLE, Ark. - Melvin Deap Heaps, 66, of Maumelle, Ark., formerly of St. Ansgar, died Wednesday (Dec. 12, 200) at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock, Ark.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at the United Methodist Church in St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Jay Amundson officiating. Burial will be in Newburg Cemetery in Carpenter.

SPENCER - Agnes T. Rusley Flugum, 91, of Sioux City, formerly of Spencer, died Wednesday (Dec. 12, 2001) at a Sioux City Care Center.

EUGENE FRANCIS 'GENE' KRAMER

MASON CITY - Eugene Francis "Gene" Kramer, 77, of Des Moines, formerly of Mason City, died Friday (Dec. 14, 2001) at the Veteran's Hospital in Des Moines.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Dennis Cahill of Holy Family Catholic Church officiating. Interment will follow at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, with a scriptural prayer service at 4:30 p.m. There will be additional visitation one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the Eugene F. Kramer Memorial Fund.

Gene was born in Alexander, Minn. in 1924, the oldest son of Henry and Helen (Rieman) Kramer. He was a graduate of Holy Family High School in Mason City.

He entered the United States Army in 1941, serving with distinction in World War II, receiving the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

In 1947, he married Donna (Coziah) Kramer Baumgartner, presently of Garner. They were blessed with seven children, Helen (Kramer} Melin of Gulfport, Miss., Eugene Kramer Jr. of Lebanon, Ohio, Diana (Kramer) Tate of Broken Arrow, Okla., Allen (Kramer) Baumgartner of Des Moines, Carol (Kramer) Baumgartner Weidner of Omaha, Neb., John Kramer of Mason City, and Julie (Kramer) Baumgartner Sorenson, of Woden.

Gene was a graduate of Hamilton Business School, who lived and worked in many North Iowa communities including Mason City, Northwood, Lake Mills, Emmetsburg and Garner. He was a past commander of the VFW and American Legion and member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Gene is survived by Donna, his children, 14 grandchildren, 3 great-grand children, two sisters, Sylvia Twiss, and Rudella Venechuk; and a brother, Roland Kramer.

His sister, LuAnne Stoffer, and grandson, Steven William Kramer, preceded him in death.
