BRITT - Logan J. Lamoreux, 3-month-old son of Shelly Aitchison and Jeff Lamoreux died Monday (May 1, 2000) at the Britt Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt, with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt, and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

DOROTHY IVERSON

THOMPSON - Dorothy Iverson, 97, of Thompson, died Monday (May 1, 2000) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, north of Thompson, with the Rev. Dani Jo Ninke-Greaver officiating. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Winter Funeral Home in Thompson and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

ANNA OLTMANN

HAMPTON - Anna Oltmann, 98, of Hampton, died Sunday (April 30, 2000) at the Franklin General Nursing Facility.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton with the Rev. Keith Weber officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

MAYNARD HOLCK

BRITT - Maynard Holck, 71, of Britt, passed away Sunday (April 30, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City following a short battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Britt with Dr. William Breen, iterim pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Maynard, the son of Adolph and Rose (Dallman) Holck, was born Jan. 9, 1929, in Britt. He attended country school in the Britt area and graduated from Britt High School in 1945. Following graduation from high school, Maynard farmed with his father northwest of Britt.

Maynard served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Following his discharge from the Army, he returned to farming.

He was united in marriage with Shirley (Nall) Veldhouse on Aug. 7, 1963, in Sioux Falls, S.D. The couple made their home near Britt. Maynard worked part-time at Sankey Oil and Marting's Manufacturing in Britt.

Maynard was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Britt, where he served numerous times on the church council. He also was a member of the Britt VFW and American Legion posts.

Maynard enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, fishing and watching sports. He also enjoyed going for Sunday rides.

Maynard is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Britt; one daughter, Mona Holck, of Britt; two sons, Curtis Holck and his wife, Sondra, of Mason City, and Mark Holck and his wife, Jodi, of Clear Lake, and four stepsons, Gene Veldhouse of Boise, Idah, Richard Veldhouse of San Ramon, Calif, Dan Veldhouse of Britt and Doug Velhouse of St. Paul, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, Nick, China, Marquita, Jennie, Katie, Natalie, Nicky, Jaime, Jessica and Cody; and one sister, Verna Alke and her husband, George, of Britt.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, one brother and one grandson.

LUVERNE - Harry W. Hakanson, 82, of LuVerne, died Monday (May 1, 2000) at Humboldt County Memorial Hospital in Humboldt.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in LuVerne with the Rev. Dale Reisner officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Fairview Cemetery in Earlville.

WALT REINDL

MASON CITY - Walt Reindl, 66, of 1626 Fourth St. S.W., died Monday (May 1, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A memorial service and an Elk's service wil l be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling, the Rev. Kathy Graves and Rose Schlueter officiating. Inurment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with full military honors conducted by members of the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

His body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Mercy Cancer Center or Hospice of North Iowa in memory of Walt Reindl.

Walter Leslie Reindl was born March 28, 1934, in Mason City, son of Leslie and Lucille (Jensen) Reindl. He attended school in Manly and Mason City. He entered the service in 1952, serving in the U.S. Navy for four years. Walt married Mary Carter on Aug. 9, 1977, in Reno, Nev.

Walt was a member of the Mason City Police Department for 40 years, retiring as a captain of detectives in 1995. He was president of the North Iowa and Southern Minnesota Investigators Council for 18 years. He was a member of the Mason City Elks Lodge, serving as Exalted Ruler in 1987. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and also a member of the Moose Lodge.

He was a board member of the All Vets Golf Course in Clear Lake. He worked part time for Patterson James and Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel for many years.

Walt enjoyed golfing and playing cards and pool with his many friends.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Reindel, of Mason City; his mother, Lucille Reindl, of Mason City; two sons, Mike Reindl of Mason City and Steve Reindl and his wife, Anna, of Manly; three daughters, Debbie Patrick and her husband, Dave, of Mason City, Sue Stearns and her husband, Rande, of Mason City, and Kathleen Reindl, of Mason City; three stepchildren, Barbara Makotis and her husband, Joe, of Farmington, N.M., Fred Carter Jr., of Maui, Hawaii, and Dennis Carter, of Canada; two brothers, Rodger Reindel and his wife, Judy, of Maine, and Bob Reindl and his wife, Rhonda, of Mission Viejo, Calif.; one sister, Judi McIntire and her husband, Warner, of Catalina Island, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leslie; a grandaughter, Caitlin Patrick, and his grandparents.

EVELYN G. JULSON

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Evelyn G. Julson, 92, of 3704 Broadway, No. 308B, died April 24, 2000, at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City with the Rev. John Sheneman of First Assembly of God Church officiating.

Visitation will be held from 1 until 2 p.m. Thursday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

Evelyn G. Julson was born Aug. 4, 1907, in Aurora, S.D., the daughter of John and Lillian (Phillips) Southard. During the 1930s she worked for Pfaff Baking Co. as an accountant in Mason City. In 1940 she relocated to Des Moines and worked as an accountant for Paul Manning Chevrolet and the Iowa Bureau of Inspections.

On Feb. 5, 1967, Evelyn was united in marriage with Harold L. Julson in Des Moines. They made their home in Florida where she had lived ever since.

While living in Florida, Evelyn returned to college and became a certified nurse's aide and delivered care to people in their homes well into her 80's.

Evelyn was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Fort Myers and the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by two stepsons, Gary Julson, of Des Moines and Michael D. Julson of Bettendorf; two nieces, Helene Slawson, of Brooksville, Fla., and Marcie Mesack of West Des Moines; and one great-niece, Judy Burkhead of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

DOROTHY IVERSON

Dorothy Malinda Iverson, daughter of Andrew and Anna (Sime) Seim, was born June 11, 1902, in Eden Township, Winnebago County, Iowa. She was baptized as a child of God and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. She received her elementary education in the Eden Township District No. 6 school. After graduating from the Luther Academy in Albert Lea, Minn., Dorothy taught country school for 10 years in Minnesota.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Otto Iverson on June 9, 1932, at Trinity Lutheran Church. They lived on their farm in Eden Township for 41 years. Dorothy enjoyed God's creation, gardening and working with flowers, roses being her favorite.

She actively helped on the farm, including the care of the chickens and gathering of the eggs in a large wire basket or a 5-gallon pail. She especially enjoyed the spring's newborn baby animals.

Dorothy was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, active in Sunday School and Ladies Aid. She loved working for the Lord and being with her family, relatives and friends. In October of 1996, she moved to the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Dorothy passed away Monday (May 1, 2000) at the Care Center.

Dorothy is survived by her sister, Rachel Holland and her husband, Therald, of Kingman, Ariz.; a cousin, Russell Sime and his wife, Lucille, of Bricelyn, Minn. (Russell came to live with the Andrew Seim family when he was 12 years old after the death of his parents). She is also survived by several nieces, Lorraine Spotts of Nora Springs, Arlis Kipfer and her husband, Ervin, of Eatonville, Wash., Phyllis Underdahl, of Lonsdale, Minn., Lorraine Severson and her husband, Severin, of Forest City, Betty Daher and her husband, Tom, of Crystal, Minn., Marilyn Houck and her husband, Dick, of Robbinsdale, Minn., Diana Gallagher and her husband, Robert, of Palatine, Ill.; and several nephews, Russell Hauan and his wife, Ramona, of Mason City, Jerome Holland and his wife, Renata, of Wayland., Mass., Jon Holland and his wife, Susan, of Kingman, Ariz., and Roger Flatrud and his wife, Karolyn, of Thompson. Dorothy also had a very special place in her heart for Kevin, Jeff and Sheila Chose.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Otto, in 1973; a sister, Ada Hauan and her husband, Alfred; brothers, Elmer Seim and his wife, Mabel, and Tilford Seim and his wife, Edna; a brother-in-law, Lawrence Iverson and his wife, Evelyn; and by Roger and Donna Chose.

JEFFREY L. CARROTT

MASON CITY - Jeffrey L. Carrott, 52, of 2151 S. Harding Ave., died Tuesday (May 2, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Daird Korth of Ventura Lutheran Church officiating. Graveside services will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. today at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel.

Jeffrey was born on May 18, 1947, in Mason City, the son of William and Marie (Frenz) Carrott. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1965 and immediately entered the Navy Reserves. Jeff served two tours of duty in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, the first as a secretary on a Naval Base and the second as a Fire Control Technician on the "Turner Joy" Naval Ship.

After his discharge, he returned home and was united in marriage to Pamella Tippie on June 7, 1969, in Fenton. Jeff worked as a truck driver and in the office at Gamble Robinson in Mason City for more than 19 years.

He graduated from Hamilton College in Mason City with a business degree. Since Gamble Robinson's closing, he had worked as a night processor at First Citizens Bank in Mason City.

Jeff was a member of the Mason City YMCA. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and woodworking, but his great joy was his love for his children and grandchildren.

Jeff is survived by his wife, Pame, of Mason City; four children, Jennifer Carrott, of Puerto Rico and Sara, Ryan and Tori Carrott, all of Mason City; two grandchildren, Zachary and Taylor Adams; one sister, Sharon Bailey and her husband, Larry, of Plymouth; one brother, Michael Carrott and his wife, Virginia, of Clear Lake; three brothers-in-law, Chuck Tippie and his wife, Paula, of Emmetsburg, Dennis Tippie, of Phoenix, Ariz. and Neal Shane, of Clear Lake; many other relatives and friends, and his special dog, a Jack Russelll terrier/poodle mix named "Sparky."

Jeff was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Betty Joann Shane.

LORETTA M. EBERLING

SHEFFIELD - Loretta M. Eberling, 82, of Sheffield, died Tuesday morning (May 2, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Jack VanDen Heuvel of Rolling Acres Christian Reformed Church officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Visitation was held on Thursday at the funeral chapel.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Loretta M. Eberling Memorial Fund.

Loretta was born on May 13, 1917, one of three children of Louis Frederick and Caroline (Foels) Schlee at Postville. She graduated from school in Postville.

On June 25, 1936, she was united in marriage to Verni Eberling. To this union 11 children were born.. They lived in several communities, which included Postville, Waukon, Cresco, Lime Springs, Rockwell, Rockford, St. Ansgar, Mason City and Sheffield. She was employed in housekeeping with the IOOF home.

While living in St. Ansgar she became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Wherever she lived she raised flowers and tended her vegetable gardens. She enjoyed sewing clothes for her family and cooking. She also played cards, especially solitaire.

Those thankful in sharing Loretta's life include her seven daughters, Diana and her husband, Don Ballhagen, of Sheffield, Gloria Holthaus, of Suwanee, Ga., Cheryl and her husband, Dave Warner, of Greene, Susan and her husband Bennie Owen, of Waterloo, Judith Donohue, of Ridgefield Park, N.J., Nancy Eberling, of St. Ansgar and Patricia and her husband, Terrell Tribble, of Aiea, Hawaii; two living sons, Fred and his wife, Edna Eberling, of Sheffield and Roger and his wife, Sandy Eberling, of St. Ansgar; 21 grandchildren Kevin and Kathy Ballhagen, Koreen Potts, Shane and Krista Holthaus, Amanda, Brenda and Nicole Warner, Megan Arthur, Mollie Owen, Patrick Donohue, Andrew and Christopher Tribble, Corey and Troy Eberling, Jodie Koestner, Jason Eberling, Debra Lindley, Tanya Dunlap, Tammara Miletiou, and Danny Dunlap; 15 great-grandhildren; and two sisters, Vivian and her husband, Edwin Gustafson, of Little Falls, Minn. and Charleen and her husband, John Morton, of Tigard, Ore.

Loretta joins those who died before including her husband, Verni, in 1985; one daughter, Jolene Eberling; one son, Gary Eberling; one great-grandson, Travis Ballhagen; and her parents.

MARVIN "DEAN" EILERS

MASON CITY - Marvin "Dean" Eilers, 71, of 1640 12th St. N.E., died Wednesday (May 3, 2000) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Frederick J. Wood officiating. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Hampton Cemetery, with full military rites by the Hampton Memorial Association.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

Memorials may be directed to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Marvin was born April 26, 1929, in Floyd County, the son of Tjark and Ruth (Newlon) Eilers. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Osage.

He attended country schools and graduated from Rudd High School in 1949. He served in the United States Navy for four years. He worked for the Armour Food Company as a forklift driver for several years.

He was united in marriage to Florence Hobson on April 17, 1982.

He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family and tinkering in the garage. He took great pride in remembering important dates, such as family birthdays and anniversaries.

Marvin is survived by his stepsons, Gerald Hobson and his wife, Debbie, of Shellrock, Dennis Hobson and his wife, Kathy, of Greene, Floyd Hobson and his wife, Sheryl, of Waverly, Dean Hobson and his wife, Vernita, of Clarkville, and Gale Hobson; stepdaughter, Janine Wikert and her husband, Russ, of Eldora; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Francis and her husband, Keith, of Osage; and a brother, Lee Eilers of Jacksonville, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Florence; and a sister, Marie.

JERRY H. KOENEN

LATIMER - Funeral services for Jerry H. Koenen, of Latimer, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Zion Reformed Church in rural Sheffield, with the Rev. Arthur Zewert officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home in Latimer.

Jerry Herman Koenen was born on Aug. 15, 1926, the son of David Herman and Amelia Gertrude (Janssen) Koenen, at Latimer. His family moved to a farm when he was 1 year old. Jerry lost his mother at the age of 6 years and his father at the age of 9 years. He then moved to town with his Aunt and Uncle, Rinder and Lena Dirksen.

On June 7, 1954, Jerry was united in marriage to Carol J. Wall at Latimer. To this union, five children were born.

At the age of 14, Jerry started working for Wilbert Muhlenbruck at the Latimer Produce. In 1954, he bought into the business as co-owner. From 1969 until 1982, he worked at Latimer Grain Co., when injuries forced him to quit working.

Jerry entered Mercy Medical Center in Mason City for heart surgery on Thursday, April 27, 2000. Jerry died Thursday morning (May 4, 2000) at the age of 73, from complications following his surgery.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, of Latimer; sons, Duane and wife, Pamela, of Alden, Minn., Dennis and wife, Karla, of Marion and Dwight and wife, Deanna, of Latimer; daughters, Jerri and husband, Tim Enderson, of Manly and Kathy and husband, Jerome Bormann, of Mason City; 11 grandchildren, Lindsay, Danielle, Shaun, Kayla, Joshua, Cody, Jared, Rachel, Tyler, Morgan and Matthew; sisters, Louisa Wiemann, of Hampton and Amelia Lantford, of Conway, Ark.; a brother, David Koenen, of Latimer; and a sister-in-law, Carol A. Koenen, of Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Florence; brother, William; and brothers-in-law, Harvey and Hank.

MELVIN O. ANDERSON

CARPENTER -Melvin O. Anderson, 95, passed away Thursday (May 4, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter, with the Rev. Kathy Larson officiating. Burial will be in Deer Creek Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South in Northwood.

Melvin was born Nov. 2, 1904, to Ole and Mary (Knutson) Anderson on the home farm in Barton township, Worth County. He was baptized and confirmed at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, rural Carpenter, and was a lifelong member. He attended Carpenter school.

He was united in marriage to Lurene Anderson on April 6, 1935. He and Lurene farmed in the North Iowa area until 1969, when they retired to Carpenter.

He enjoyed fishing, going south for the winter in their camper and following the exploits of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a big man in stature, who had an equally big heart. He was a good man. His philosophy for life was simple: Work hard. He will be missed very much by those who knew and loved him.

Melvin is survived by one son, Kenneth and his wife, Annette, of Spring Valley, Minn.; four grandchildren, Kristy Weise and her husband, Kurt, of Apple Valley, Minn., Lori Eickhoff and her husband, Dean, of Spring Valley, Minn., Jeffrey and his wife, Jennifer, of Fullerton, Neb., and William and his wife, Tara, of Maple Grove, Minn.; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Selma Beyer of Northwood; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lurene; four brothers, Olaf, Leonard, Anton and Gilbert; and one sister, Olga.

MASON CITY - Max W. Degen, 79, of 1219 S. Carolina Ave., died Wednesday (May 3, 2000) at his home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 6, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Pinewood Cemetery in Crosslake, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Hogan Bremer Funeral Home, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

Max was born on July 5, 1920, in Mason City, the son of Nicholas and Ada (Agatha) Degen. He graduated from Mason City High School and entered into the Army Air Force in 1943. Max served as a clerk general during World War II. He returned home after the war and entered into his father's carpet and flooring business.

Max was united in marriage to A. Arlene Gagnon on June 3, 1950, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City. They lived all their lives in Mason City, where Max was a self-employed carpenter.

He enjoyed fishing and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Carpenters Union.

Max is survived by two daughters, Mary Lee Robbins of Austin, Minn., and Patricia Anne LaGue and her husband, Rick, of Manly; two sons, Paul Allen Degen and his wife, Sally, and James Michael Degen, all of Mason City; one sister, Marcilla "Micky" Jubb of Cambridge, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Christy Minard, Max Longley, Andrew Robbins, and Rick, Nick, Keith and Danika Degen; and two great-grandchildren, Mariah and Austin James.

Max was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one sister, Marilyn McClain; and one brother-in-law, Robert Jubb.

LYNDA MICHELLE FREIN

FARMINGTON, Minn. - Lynda Michelle Frein, 22-year-old daughter of Donald and Michelle Frein, of Farmington, Minn., was killed instantly in a car accident on April 13, 2000.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two sisters, Donella Frein, of Eden Prairie, Minn. and Amanda Maiers, of Farmington, Minn.; also by grandparents, Dorothy Frein, of Forest City, Lanny and Alice Barringer, of Lacy, Wash. and Tom and Freda De Toy, of Madison, Minn.; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lynette Barringer O'Connor, and a grandfather, Donald Frein.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 17, 2000, at the Berean Baptist Church in Burnsville, Minn. Interment was in the Resurrection Cemetery in Mendota Heights, Minn.

Visitation was held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 16, at the White Funeral Home in Apple Valley, Minn.

Lynda Frein was a graduate of Farmington School in 1995 and would have graduated from Brown Institute in Eagan, Minn., in July of 2000.

RICEVILLE - Peter Joseph Govern, 63, of Riceville, died on Wednesday morning (May 3, 2000) at 11:25 a.m. at the Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City after battling cancer since 1988.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2000, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville, with Father John Moser and Father John Cain officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville, with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus and a scripture service at 7 p.m.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine, of Riceville; one daughter, Juliet, of Riceville; two sons, Christopher, of St. Joseph's, Minn. and Shawn, of Milwaukee, Wis.; his wife, Diane, and daughters, Kaitlin, Mikayla and Shannon.

Other survivors include his mother, Ella Govern, of Bancroft; two brothers, John and wife, Bonnie, of Eagle Grove and Tom and wife, June, of New Lennox, Ill.; sisters, including Delores Miller, of Marshalltown, Pat Mathre and husband, Roger, of Nora Springs, Phyllis Krause and husband, Robert, of Mason City, Priscilla and husband, Melvin DeGeeter, of Champaign, Ill. and Jean Govern, of Mason City.

Peter "Joe" was born northeast of Bancroft on Feb. 20, 1937, the son of John Patrick Govern and Ella Irene Trenary Govern. He attended St. John's School of Bancroft and then matriculated at Iowa State University for his bachelor of science degree in physical education and mathematics.

His master of science degree was received from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Ill. He taught at Columbus High School in Waterloo when that school opened in 1959 until 1962 in the math department and as the head baseball coach and as a basketball coach. He also taught at the Alden Community Schools, LaHabra, Calif., schools and mathematics classes at the Riceville Community Schools from 1965 until 1979. He received a Mitchell County Teacher of the Year award in 1970. He was a member of the Riceville Education Association.

Pete's other vocations included farming and real estate. He was a salesman with Kepple Real Estate of Charles City from 1970-1977. In 1977 Pete and his wife, Elaine, opened "Govern and Govern, Homes and Farmland, U.S.A." which served his neighbors and friends of northeast Iowa by providing real estate and farm management services.

In January of 2000, he became associated with Riceville Real Estate. In 1980 he received an Outstanding Conservation Farmer Award from Howard County SCD. For several summers, he did hail adjusting.

In the past he was an officer of the Cedar Valley Board of Realtors and a member of the Northeast Iowa Board of Realtors. For many years he was associated with the Realtor's Land Institute and a vice-president of the Northeast Iowa region. In 1994 he was named the Outstanding Farm and Land Broker of the State of Iowa. In 1999 the Institute recognized his years of service to the organization with a service award.

He served as a consultant for the Iowa Farm Business Association. Other responsibilities included work for the Howard County Board of Review, Howard County Economic Development Commission for the promotion and welfare of Howard County. This had a special place in his agenda with several industries and businesses added to the Howard County roster of accomplishments.

Local Riceville projects have included service on the Immaculate Conception Church Council and as a Trustee. In the past, he was active on the Archdiocesan of Dubuque Council. Offices held in the Riceville Industrial Corporation included secretary, treasurer and president for many years. Others included president of the Riceville Library Board, the Riceville Community Club, Riceville Jaycees and as an Outstanding Jaycee president in Northeast Iowa. He had served on the board of directors for the Riceville Community Golf Course and as the Riceville Chairman of the town's quasiquicentennial celebration. His town, country, school, church and family were enriched by his presence.

CHARLES CITY - Jean (Mrs. Veryl) Johnson, 76, formerly of 712 Ninth Ave., died Tuesday (May 2, 2000) at the 9th St. Chautauqua Guest Home.
