CEDAR RAPIDS - Paul H. Coty, 90, a former Mason City resident, died Saturday (Jan. 22, 2000) at the Willow Gardens Care Center in Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. Mason City, with the Rev. Paul Coty II officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the Fullerton Funeral Home.

NEVA A. BEISEL

MASON CITY - Neva A. Beisel, 96, of 704 N. Jackson Ave. died Tuesday (Jan. 25, 2000) at Heritage Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at The Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. Thursday at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. Mason City.

THEODORE LEE 'TED' YOUNG

MASON CITY - Theodore Lee "Ted" Young, 72, of 18 S. Willow Green Court, died Sunday (Jan. 23, 2000) in Houston, Texas.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with a 6 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary and a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

The family suggests memorials to the Mason City Exchange Club.

Ted was born Oct. 27, 1927, in Algona, the son of Victor and Hester (Jasperson) Young. He attended school in Mason City and Clear Lake and then continued his education at the Washington University of St. Louis, Mo.

Ted served in the United States Navy during World War II. After the service he moved back to Clear Lake. He married Julia Hofer on March 31, 1951, in Clear Lake.

Ted worked for Standard Oil for over fourteen years in sales. He bought the Miller distributorship and started Young Distributors and later River City Realty retiring in 1978.

Ted enjoyed sailing, traveling to Florida and spending time with his granddaughter in Texas. He was a very devoted husband, loving father and grandfather. He was very involved with the Mason City Exchange Club and enjoyed helping with the fireworks.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church of Mason City, Mason City Knights of Columbus 1006 and the Mason City Exchange Club.

Ted is survived by his wife, Julia Young, of Mason City; one daughter, Nancy Jackson and her husband, William, of Houston, Texas; one granddaughter, Katie Elizabeth Hofer Jackson of Houston, Texas; sister-in-law, Jacque Young Ecoff of Leesburg, Florida; and three nieces, Terry Arons of Cedar Rapids, Vickie Kelly of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Kathy Palmer of Tallahassee, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, William Young in 1997; and his brother, Robert Young.

RENWICK - Dian J. Nelson, 47, of Renwick, died Tuesday (Jan. 25, 2000) at the Community Memorial Hospital in Clarion.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Renwick with the Rev. Karen Dearchs officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery in rural Renwick.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Renwick.

LAKE MILLS - Llewellyn J. Dunn, 83, of Lake Mills, died Sunday (Jan. 23, 2000) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Salem Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Sara Beth Akre and the Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating. Burial will be in the Salem Lutheran Cemetery, Lake Mills, with military rites by the Lake Mills Otto/Chose Posts #235.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills and one hour prior to services at the church.

MARGARET A. JENISON

MASON CITY - Margaret A. Jenison, 71, died Friday (Jan. 21, 2000) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with Charles Caponi officiating. Interment will be held at a later date at the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from noon until 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. Mason City.

GAYLEN DEROLD JOHNSON

BRITT - Gaylen Derold Johnson, 76, of Kanawha, passed away Monday (Jan. 24, 2000) at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Lutheran Church in Kanawha, with Pastor Keith Sievers officiating. Burial will be in the Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha.

Visitation was held on Tuesday at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Kanawha. Additional visitation will be held one hour prior to services today at the church.

Gaylen was born on Feb. 27, 1923, to Carlton and Adina (Hefte) Johnson on a farm west of Belmond. He attended country school.

On Nov. 6, 1943, he was married to Delores Sturgeon in Belmond. He worked at Farmers Grain Company and for the city of Belmond and then moved west of Kanawha where he farmed for 14 years. Then he worked at Winnebago Industries four years and as parts manager at Broshar Implement until retirement. Gaylen was an active member of Kanawha Lutheran Church. He enjoyed bowling, but his real love was to take Delores dancing.

Gaylen is survived by two daughters, Angela Strege and her husband, Kevin, of Bakersfield, Calif. and Andrea Mallen of Mason City and her special friend, Denny Honsey, of Minneapolis, Minn.; one son, Todd Johnson of Buffalo Center; one daughter-in-law, Sherry Johnson of Kanawha; five grandchildren, Travis and his wife, Sue, of Grimes, Chad of West Des Moines and his fiancee, Steph, of Belmond, Jade of Clinton, Mitchell of Buffalo Center, and Jacey of Britt and one great-grandson, Drew; three sisters, Edith Shahan and her husband, Stanley, of Ames; Carol Christenson and her husband, Earl, of Forest City, and Wilma Friesleben of Belmond; three brothers, Dudley Johnson and his wife, Janice, of Kanawha, Arland Johnson and his wife, Avis, of Hector, Minn., and Gary Johnson and his wife, Barbara, of St. Johns, Newfoundland; and many nieces and nephews.

Gaylen was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Delores, on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000; one son, Tony Johnson; one great-grandson, Jordan Chase Johnson; and two sisters, Laura Simon and Aileen Johnson.

JOSEPHINE L. GRENDLER

GARNER - Josephine L. Grendler, 93, of Garner, passed away Monday (Jan. 24, 2000) at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Boniface Catholic Church with Father John W. Hemann and Father Albert Grendler officiating. Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery in Wesley.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St. in Garner, with a combined rosary by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and Rosary Society at 7 p.m. and a scriptural wake serviceat 7:30 p.m.

Josephine Lucy Grendler, the daughter of Frederic and Marie (Bertemes) Girres, was born March 31, 1906, at Mallard in Palo Alto County. She moved with her family to the Wesley area where they farmed.

In 1926, she graduated from Wesley High School. She received her Normal Training Teaching Certificate from Iowa State Teacher College in Cedar Falls and then taught in the rural schools of Kossuth County.

On Aug. 12, 1935, she was married to August Paul Grendler at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley. They lived in Armstrong for nine years, in Bradgate for several years and in 1949, moved to Greene. In 1984 she moved to Garner to be near her family and in 1993 to Prairie View Apartments.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Garner Senior Citizens.

She is survived by her three sons, Paul Grendler and his wife, Marcella, of Chapel Hill, N.C., Francis Grendler and his wife, Peggy, of Cedar Falls and Clare Grendler, of Fridley, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Peter Grendler, Jean Grendler, Christopher Grendler, Jeffrey Grendler, Tracy Grendler, Vicki Nauman, Terry Busack and David Busack; two great-grandchildren, Melissa Boatright and Ian Busack; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, August Grendler, Oct. 15, 1983; her parents; three sisters, Elizabeth Matz, Frederica Girres and Celestine Brandt; and a brother, Adolph Girres.

FRANCES K. KNOOP

ROCKFORD - Frances K. Knoop, 83, formerly of 22 Third St. S.W., Rockford, died Tuesday (Jan. 25, 2000) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services are tentatively planned for 1:30 p. m. Friday, Jan. 28, at the Fullerton-Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 West Main, Rockford. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery,

DORIS C. BURTNESS

FERTILE - Doris C. Burtness, 88, of Fertile, died Sunday (Jan. 23, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Fertile Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Roger Kampstra officiating. Burial will be in Brush Point Cemetery in Fertile.

Visitation was held Tuesday at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. Forest City.

Doris C. Burtness was born on a farm west of Fertile on March 15, 1911, the daughter of John and Janet (Halverson) Zobel. She received her education in the Ventura and Fertile schools. She married Lester Burtness on Nov. 7, 1931, in Mason City.

Doris was involved at a variety of efforts over the years. She finished driving Lester's school bus route in 1944 when he joined the service, she candled eggs, hung wallpaper for many people and was a wonderful baker.

She owned and operated two restaurants in Fertile and worked in the lunch room at the Fertile School.

She was a gifted seamstress and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and doing hand-work, often sharing many mittens, booties and afghans with her family and friends.

She liked to fish and go camping. She loved spending time with her family and was always there for them, a supportive and caring wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Lester Burtness of Fertile; two daughters, Janice Abrahms and her husband, Spence Jr., of Clear Lake and JoAnn Bailey of Fertile; two sons and their spouses, Larry and Janet Burtness of Fertile and Lance and Diane Burtness of Fertile; a sister, Corrine Miller of Clear Lake; a sister-in-law, Pat Zobel of Fertile; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, two sisters and two great-granddaughters.

DIANE HELLING

BURNSVILLE, Minn. - Diane Helling, of Burnsville, Minn. died Saturday (Jan. 22, 2000) at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minn.

Funeral services will be held today, Jan. 27 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Burnsville, Minn. with burial at Elk Creek Church Cemetery in Kensett, Iowa, where she had been church organist during her early teen years.

She attended school in Northwood-Kensett School District and graduated from Richfield High School in Richfield, Minn. She attended Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minn. and received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Minnesota and an M.B.A. from the College of St. Thomas, of St. Paul, Minn. At the time of her death she was employed as a computer consultant in Minneapolis, Minn.

She is survived by her husband, Ted Martz; one daughter, Allison Martz; mother, Marian Helling; three brothers, Dennis Helling, Andy Helling and Bob Helling; three sisters, Randi Helling, Linda Larson and Julie Helling; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, Archie Helling; and grandparents, Leonard and Edna Midlang and Tom and Myrtle Helling.

FRANCES K. KNOOP

ROCKFORD - Frances K. Knoop, 83, formerly of 22 3rd St. SW, Rockford, died Tuesday morning( Jan. 25, 2000) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Jan.28, at the Fullerton-Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 West Main, Rockford. Officiating will be the Rev. Miles Grismore of Faith Baptist Church of Mason City. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Visitation will be after 4:00 p.m. today at the Fullerton-Schumburg Funeral Home in Rockford.

Frances was born on March 17, 1916 at Algona, one of 15 children of Elmer Alvin and Ethel Blanche (Blake) Gross.

She attended country school near Rockford and was an active member of the Rockford Baptist Church along with the Ladies Missionary group. Frances also taught Sunday and Bible schools and volunteered to lead the children's singing.

On Oct. 6, 1931 she was united in marriage to Vernon Knoop at the Little Brown Church, in Nashua. She could often be found happily tending her flower gardens or baking and delivering buns to those that helped her. She enjoyed crafts and keeping an immaculate house. She also kept close family ties, especially with her sisters.

Those thankful for sharing in France's life include her daughter and husband, Katherine and Leon Ogilvie, of Rockford; three granddaughters, LeAnn Ogilvie, of Oakdale, Minn. Linda and her husband, Michael Beltran, of Albuquerque, N.M., Lisa and her husband, Brad Franklin, and their three children Caleb, Andrew, and Josiah Franklin all of Marble Rock; four sisters, DeEtta Erickson, of Fairmont, Minn., Bernice Jacobson, of Chapin, Blanche and her husband, Gene Crisp, of Longview, Texas, and Naomi Rosecke, of Austin Minn.; two brothers, Donald Gross, of Rockford and Bernard and his wife, Coletta Gross, of Fort Dodge, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vernon on Dec. 2, 1992; three sisters and five brothers.

ROSA SALAZAR RAMON

MASON CITY - Rosa Salazar Ramon, 62, of Mason City, died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday (Jan. 28, 2000) at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E, with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until noon and from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel and one hour before services on Friday.

Rosa Salazar Ramon was born on Sept. 13, 1937, the daughter of Louisa A. Salazar in San Antonio, Texas. She attended and received her education in the San Antonio School System, before moving to the Northern Iowa area when she was 20 years old.

For several years, she was a housekeeper for several doctors in Mason City, before working for Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa at the east campus in Mason City, until the time of her death.

She enjoyed shopping, talking with her friends, going for drives and listening to Mexican music, but her great love and enjoyment was her children and grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Alex S. Ramon and his wife, Sue, of Mason City, Rosemary S. Peters and her husband, Kevin, of Garland, Texas, Carmen S. Ramon, of Mason City and Albert S. Ramon and his wife, Stacy, of Mason City; nine grandchildren, Scott Schutz, of Mason City, Melissa Schutz, of Mason City, Matthew Ramon, of Laguna Hills, Calif., Angelica Leon, of Mason City, Cassandra Leon, of Mason City, Celena Leon, of Mason City, Savanna L. Ramon, of Mason City, Raquel L. Ramon, of Mason City and Jarred Ramon, of Clear Lake; one sister, Guadalupe S, Martinez, of San Antonio, Texas; a very special friend, Roger Angell, of Mason City; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Louisa A. Salazar and a brother.

Neva was born on March 25, 1905 on a farm near Cylinder, Iowa, the daughter of Vincent and Martha (Gohr) Higley. She attended country school and was confirmed in the German Lutheran Church in Fairville, Iowa. She moved to Mason City with her parents in 1917 and attended city school.

Neva was united in marriage to Reinhard Beisel in July of 1921 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason City.

She was a lifelong homemaker and a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and the Royal Neighbors of America.

Neva is survived by two sons, Everett Beisel, of Mason City and Harold Beisel, of Magnolia, Texas; one daughter, Betty Bratrud, of Kensett; five grandchildren, Gloria Warren and her husband, John, of Shafter, Calif., Jean Oltjenbrun and her husband, Larry, of Reed Springs, Mo., Jane Johanns and her husband, Everett, of Mason City, Jeff Beisel and his wife, Robin, of Tomball, Texas and Jeanette Parks, of Magnolia, Texas; 10 great-grandchildren, Sam Katter and his wife, Nikki, of Garner, Rhonda Falbab and her husband, Chris, of St. Louis, Mo., Bryan Oltjenbrun and his wife, Lisa, of White Bear Township, Minn., Jody Schulz and her husband, Jason, of Mason City, Chris Bentzin and his special friend, Nikki Gahsen, of Mason City, Andy Bratrud, of Milford, Neb., Shawn and Shawna Parks, of Magnolia, Texas and Michelle and Tara Beisel, of Tomball, Texas; and three great-great-grandchildren, Taylor Jean Parks, Dylan Oltjenbrun and Rayne Benson.

Neva was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister, three brothers; two grandsons, Mark and Howard Beisel; one great-granddaughter, Judy Bratrud; one grandson-in-law, Michael Benson; one son-in-law, Orrin Bratrud; and two daughters-in-law, Eleanor and Alvena Beisel.

TERRY J. STOFFER

WEST DES MOINES - Terry J. Stoffer, 53, of 325 34th St., West Des Moines, died Tuesday (Jan. 25, 2000) at his home.

Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the West Des Moines United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Alexander Cemetery, Alexander, at a later date.

Terry was born in Alexander and had lived in Des Moines for 30 years. He was self employed as Stoffer Communication Strategies, L.L.C.

He was a member of the American Marketing Association, Advertising Professionals of Des Moines and Delta Tau Delta.

He loved his pets, boating, gardening, cooking and watching movies.

He is survived by a son, Alan Stoffer, of West Des Moines; and one sister, Cindy Reynolds, of West Des Moines.

Memorials may be given to the Animal Rescue League or The American Heart Association.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home and continue from 9 a.m. until time of services on Friday.

Paul was born Nov. 23, 1909 the son of Paul and Margaret (Wilhelm) Coty in Cleveland, Ohio. He was united in marriage to Spizie Farley on June 21, 1937 in East Moline, Ill. Paul was an auto detailer for many years at Sedars Motor Company before moving to the Quad Cities.

Paul was an avid reader of history. He was also an enthusiastic major league baseball fan who enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins or the St. Louis Cardinals play.

Those thankful for having shared in Paul's life include his wife, Spizie of Iowa City; five daughters, Beverly Burrell and her husband, James, of Cedar Rapids, Pauletta Kipper of Iowa City, Dianna Bowers and her husband, Willie, of Iowa City, Andrea Coty, of Omaha, Neb. and Carolyn Coty, of Mason City; six sons, Paul H. Coty Jr. and his wife, Fran, of Baltimore, Md., Dwight Coty, of Spokane, Wash., Ralph Coty, of Iowa City, Michael Coty and his friend, Pat Ferleman, of Mason City, Joseph Coty and his wife, Sharon, of Chicago, Ill. and Pierre Coty, of Minneapolis, Minn.

Mr. Coty was preceded in death by his parents; and one daughter, Pauline Coty.

NASHUA - Jack A. Angell, 55, of Nashua, died Monday evening (Jan. 24, 2000) suddenly at his home near Nashua of natural causes.

OSAGE - Evelyn A. Jorde, 92, of Osage, died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Osage.

MASON CITY - Margaret A. Jenison, 71, died Friday (Jan. 21, 2000) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Margaret was born April 10, 1928, the daughter of C. J. and Ella (Himber) Dunlavey in Mason City. She graduated from St. Joseph High School with the Class of 1947.

On March 21, 1959 Margaret was united in marriage to Greydon K. Jenison in Nashua. She was a faithful employee of the Northwestern Bell for 34 1/2 years until her retirement on Dec. 31, 1983.

Margaret enjoyed golfing, playing poker and going fishing in Minnesota and Canada.

Margaret is survived by one sister, Dorothy O'Hern, of Mason City; one brother, Francis Dunlavey, of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

GARNER - Leo W. Jass, 91, of Garner, passed away on Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner, with the Rev. Darrell Weber officiating. Interment will be at the Concord Township Cemetery.

Leo W. Jass, the son of Herman and Carolina (Grell) Jass, was born Aug. 28, 1908, on a farm northeast of Garner. After attending the rural schools of Hancock County and St. John's Parochial School, he worked for various farmers and the Hancock County Highway Department.

On March 9, 1940, he married Vola Goll, at the Peace Reformed parsonage south of Garner. They farmed at New Richland, Minn. for four years and on Dec. 13, 1943, moved to the Goll Homestead, southwest of Garner, where they farmed for 34 years, retiring to town in December of 1978. Alan and his wife, Margaret now live on the farm, which has been in the family since 1882.

Leo's special loves were his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and draft horses. He enjoyed watching sports on TV and the growing of his crops.

He was a member of the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church where he served on the consistory. He also served on the Hancock County Co-op Oil and Garner Creamery boards for several years and was a 4-H leader for the Liberty Go-Getters.

He is survived by his wife, Vola Jass; a son, Alan Jass and his wife, Margaret, of Garner; a daughter, Carolyn Jass, of Golden, Colo.; three grandchildren, Steve Jass and his wife, Nancy, of Garner, Mark Jass and his wife, Beth, of Garner, and Janell Smith and her husband, Mike, of Urbandale; five special great-grandchildren, Chase Jass, Trey Jass, Courtney Jass, Kiersten Jass and Zachary Smith; two sisters, Edna Hammitt, of Garner and Alpha Rood, of Detroit, Mich.; and a sister-in-law, Myrna Schmidt, of Garner.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a great-granddaughter, Kaylee Jass; and four brothers, Emil, Arthur, Otto and Arnold Jass.

OSAGE - Geraldine "Gere" Isham, 80, of Osage, died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Gere was born Sept. 7, 1919, in Oxford, N.Y., the daughter of Clarence and Gladise (Crane) Follansbee. She moved with her family to the family farm near Floyd where she grew up. She graduated from Charles City High School.

Gere was united in marriage to Dr. Robert B. Isham on Dec. 24, 1942, on the family farm near Floyd. They made their home in Osage.

She was very active in the Girl Scouts, serving as a troop leader and two terms as president of the North Iowa Girl Scout Council. When Gere died, her three daughters were at her side.

Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 31, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 833 Ash St. in Osage with the Rev. Roy Ott and the Rev. Dennis Hanson officiating. Inurnment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Kathryn was born Nov. 24, 1912, the daughter of George and Calla (Banning) Wiltgen in Mason City. She was raised and attended school here in Mason City. She graduated from Mason City High School in the class of 1930.

On May 9, 1937, Kathryn was united in marriage to Carl Scharlau at St. John's Episcopal Church in Mason City. Kathryn worked for many years with her husband, Carl, as a bookkeeper at Ideal Plumbing and Heating.

In her spare time she could often be found playing bridge, reading mysteries or working cross-word puzzles.

Paul was an avid reader of history. He was also an enthusiastic major league baseball fan who enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins or the St. Louis Cardinals play.

Jack A. Angell was born Aug. 2, 1944, in Mason City to Andrew and Viola (Metz) Angell. He graduated from Osage High School in 1962 and Austin Technical College in Austin, Minn.

He married Kathy Rogers on Jan. 31, 1966 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage.

He worked at Hydrotile in Nashua from 1971 until its closing in 1991, and most recently worked at Winnebago Industries in Charles City as a welder.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy, of Nashua; two sons, Jeff (Maria) Angell, of Seffner, Fla. and Keith Angell, of Clarion; two daughters, Mrs. Kirk (Brenda) Harris, of Frankfurt, Germany and Mrs. Shawn (Lori) Leeper, of Maitland, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. Larry (Andrea) Dammen, of Osage and Mrs. John (Beth) Griffen, of Marshalltown; his father, Andrew Angell, of Osage; six grandchildren, Megan, Kenneth and Ariel Harris, Stephanie and Christopher Angell and Dakota Leeper.

Robert Duane Roper was born June 21, 1925, in Calhoun County, Iowa, to Fred and Edith (Mahe) Roper. He graduated from Lohrville, Iowa, High School in 1942 and attended auto mechanics school in Des Moines before returning home to farm with his father.

On April 27, 1947, he married Eleanor Iverson at Marshalltown. They established their home near Lohrville. In 1953, the Ropers moved to Thompson to run the Oliver Dealership for five years. For many years Bob had farmed east of Thompson in partnership with his son.

Bob enjoyed farming, reading, travel and Oliver Tractors. He was an active member of the Thompson United Methodist Church. He will be remembered for his kindness, sense of humor and the love he shared with his family.

Bob passed away Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at his home near Thompson at the age of 74.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor, of Thompson; a son, Andy and his wife, Diane and their children, Megan and Colby, of Leland; a daughter, Adele, of Waterloo; foster daughter, Barbara Emerson and her husband, Stanley and children, Derek and Mindy, of Mason City; and one brother, Louis Roper and his wife, Shirley, of Jefferson.

Jennie P. Barlas was born Feb. 13, 1903, in Masklina, Greece, the daughter of Gus and Angeline (Hougiazous) Papageorge. She married George A. Barlas in April of 1928 in Chicago, Ill.

Jennie came to the United States on July 4, 1921, with her sister. She lived in Chicago for seven years until her marriage when she and her husband moved to Mason City.

Jennie enjoyed cooking and sewing, gardening and crocheting and she was an avid reader. Most importantly, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She was a member of the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Mason City.

Survivors include two children, Myrna Barlas, and Tom Barlas and his wife, Kathy, both of Mason City; five grandchildren, Johanna and Nico Kotsopoulos, both of St. Paul, Minn., George Barlas, of Mason City, Joanne Landau and her husband, Charles, of Waterloo and Tom Barlas Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Mason City; one great-granddaughter, Chanel Kathryn Barlas, of Mason City; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Blake and Michael Landau, both of Waterloo; three sisters, Panagoula Karadoni, of Tripoli, Greece, Chrisanthe Theophilopoulos, of Athens, Greece and Bessie Zekios, of Tripoli, Greece; a special nephew, Harry Papageorgiou, of Hartford, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews in Greece.

MASON CITY - Pauline L. McCourt, 85, of 806 16th N.E., died Wed. ( Jan. 26, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Care Center.

Pauline was born on April 2, 1914, in Mason City, the daughter of John and Hazel (Durtro) Kopecky. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1932 and has remained a Mason City resident her entire lifetime.

On September 26, 1937, she was united in marriage to Keith McCourt and to this union were born two daughters. She remained busy working in retail sales for several businesses which included Kresge's, Moellers, J.C. Penney and Arlan's.

When she was younger she sewed for her children and family as well as other homey items such as embroidery and curtains. She was always willing to help at the Kopecky Cottages in Clear Lake which her parents owned.

She loved to cook, bake and keep a very neat home especially around the holidays and Christmas. She was a very compassionate and loving person and was a natural caregiver. Her number one priority always focused on her family and was devoted to her grandchildren and great grandchildren who adored her.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Altar Guild, United Service Women's Club, and the Rebecca Lodge.

She attended country school near Rockford and was an active member of the Rockford Baptist Church along with the Ladies Missionary group. Frances also taught Sunday and Bible schools and volunteered to lead the children's singing.

On Oct. 6, 1931, she was united in marriage to Vernon Knoop at the Little Brown Church, in Nashua. She could often be found happily attending her flower gardens or baking and delivering buns to those that helped her. She enjoyed crafts and keeping an immaculate house. She also kept close family ties, especially with her sisters.

Those thankful for sharing in France's life include her daughter and husband, Katherine and Leon Ogilvie, of Rockford; three granddaughters, LeAnn Ogilvie, of Oakdale, Minn., Linda and her husband, Michael Beltran, of Albuquerque, N.M. and Lisa and her husband, Brad Franklin, and their three children Caleb, Andrew, and Josiah Franklin, all of Marble Rock; and a grandson, Greg Ogilvie, of Ames; four sisters, DeEtta Erickson, of Fairmont, Minn.; Bernice Jacobson, of Chapin, Blanche and her husband, Gene Crisp, of Longview, Texas and Naomi Rosecke, of Austin Minn.; two brothers, Donald Gross, of Rockford and Bernard and his wife, Coletta Gross, of Fort Dodge; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Vernon on Dec. 2, 1992; three sisters and five brothers.

MASON CITY - Katherine "Katie" A. Schritt, 85, of 1305 N. Carolina Place, died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Private family graveside services will be held at a later date with the Rev. Frederick J. Wood of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Burial will be held in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Katherine was born Nov. 14, 1914, in Mason City, the daughter of Lawrence and Hedwiga (Kosinski) Szymeczek. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1932. Katherine worked for Woolworth's and United Home Bank in Mason City before she became librarian at the Globe Gazette, where she worked for 22 1/2 years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, enjoyed embroidering, sewing, gardening and babysitting.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Jo Schritt of San Diego, Calif., and Frances K. Watson of Spring Valley, Calif.; grandson, Kevin Joseph Bishop of Houston, Texas; two brothers, George Szymeczek of Rosenberg, Texas and Frank Szymeczek of Washington, N.C.; three sisters, Veasha Borger of Mason City, Rosie Austin of Mason City and Frances Gardner of Hobart, Ind.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Joe and John; two sisters, Mary Zemanek and Annie Borger; and one nephew, Tom Austin.

MASON CITY - Alfred C. Berding, 79, of 1033 19th St. S.W., died Friday (Jan. 28, 2000) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. James Lutheran Church, with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Alfred was born Oct. 2, 1920, in Burchinal, the son of Bernard and Petra (Koch) Berding.

He married Maureen Hocraffer April 14, 1941, in Mason City. He farmed in the Mason City area, moved to Osage and then to Manly. While farming, Alfred also worked at the Sugar Beet Plant, David Manufacturing and sold seed corn for O's Gold Seed Co. Alfred recently moved to Mason City from Plymouth. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, enjoyed fishing, traveling and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Maureen, of Mason City; two daughters, Patricia Jackson and husband, Richard, of Marion, and Linda Papouchis and husband, George, of Mason City; son, DuWayne Berding and wife, Lylanne, of Newton; grandchildren, Becky Latuska and husband, Ken, Brian Jackson, Beth Jackson, Jess Berding-Wheat and wife Stephanie, Lanny Newville, Randy Newville, Trent Newville, Bruce McGilvary and Page McGilvary; great grandchildren, Ryan and Matthew Latuska, and Carson Wheat; two brothers, Alvin Berding, Mason City and Robert Berding of Council Bluffs; and many nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY - Nina E. (Mrs. Oscar F., Sr.) Fewins, 82, of 304 Third St. N.E., #104, died Friday (Jan. 28, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th St. N.W., with the Rev. Pamela J. Flanigan officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Mrs. Fewins, the former Nina Elizabeth Banken, was born May 7, 1917, in rural Kensett, the daughter of Halvor and Beulah (Highsmith) Banken. She was baptized at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett and attended country schools in the area. For 23 years, Nina was employed by the former Jacob E. Decker Meat Packing Company.

On Dec. 24, 1958, in Albert Lea, Minn., she was united in marriage to Oscar F. Fewins, Sr. The couple left to make their home in the Kansas City, Mo., area. She worked as a baker at the Panhandle Eastern Building Cafeteria. She retired in 1979, and the couple returned to Mason City in 1984. Mr. Fewins died August 28, 1998, in Mason City. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, she was noted for her baking abilities, cake decorating being her specialty. She was an avid and active fisherman, and enjoyed the camping festivities, which went along with fishing. With Oscar, she loved to travel.

Those thankful for being a part of Nina's life include her stepson and his wife, Oscar F., Jr. and Wanda Fewins of Mason City; a brother and his wife, Richard and Delores Banken of Forest City; two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Moore and Mrs. Pat Morgan, both of Mason City; five grandchildren, Amanda, Ashley and Anna Fewins, and Cathy and Kevin Deutenberg; three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a brother, Edward Banken.

CELAYA, GTO., MEXICO -Francisco "Frank" Campa, 87, died Sunday (Dec. 26, 1999) at Celaya, Mexico.

Frank Campa was born Dec. 6, 1912, in Rincon de Tamayo, Mexico, the son of Fidel and Maria Campa. He was united in marriage on March 19, 1932, to Elvira Miranda Hernandez at Rincon de Tamayo, Mexico.

Frank was employed for many years at Lehigh Portland Cement Company, Mason City, until his retirement in 1975.

He is survived by his wife, Elvira; two sons, Reynaldo and Fernando and his wife Rosalla; four daughters, Carmen Medina and husband, Francisco, Ana Maria Campa Almonaci, Elvira Garcia and husband, Servando, and Julia Miranda Campa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Francisco Campa Jr.

GARNER - Larry Leichtman, 57, of Garner, died Friday (Jan. 28, 2000) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Garner with the Rev. John Hemann as celebrant. Burial will be held at 2 p.m. in St. Marys Catholic Cemetery, New Hampton.

Lawrence "Larry" Joseph Leichtman, the son of Lloyd Merlin and Marie (Schueller) Leichtman, was born April 16, 1942, at New Hampton, the eldest of three children. He graduated from New Hampton High School in 1960 and then worked as an assistant manager at Liddle's Super Value in New Hampton until 1981.

On June 29, 1968, he married Patricia Lynn Peterson at St. Marys Catholic Church in New Hampton. Two sons, Scott and Eric, were born to this marriage. In 1981, the family moved to Garner, where Larry owned and operated Larry's Super Value. Due to health problems, they closed the store in 1989. Larry worked at True Value and was currently employed at Winnebago Industries in Forest City. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, where he was on the Parish Council for 12 years, the Knights of Columbus and was a former member of the Garner Rotary Club and Garner Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by his wife, Pat Leichtman, of Garner; two sons, Scott Leichtman and Eric Leichtman, both of Garner; his mother, Marie Leichtman, of New Hampton; a brother, Ron Leichtman and his wife, Faye, of New Hampton; and a sister, Carol Crawford and her husband, Edward, of New Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Leichtman, Sept. 8, 1999.

NEVA F. HARTZELL

GARNER - Neva F. Hartzell, 72, of Garner, died Friday (Jan. 28, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, of cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church, Garner with the Rev. Kay Hooper and the Rev. Curtis DeVance officiating. Burial will be held in Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme.

Neva F. Hartzell, the daughter of August and Rosa (Bredlow) Kropp, was born Nov. 18, 1926, on a farm southwest of Garner. After attending the rural schools of Liberty Township she graduated from Garner High School in 1944. She attended I.S.T.C. in Cedar Falls and then worked at Bethke Produce in Garner.

On June 12, 1949, she was married to Robert Hartzell at Liberty Methodist Church southwest of Garner. They made their home in Klemme. Neva worked at the ASCS in Garner until she retired. She also worked as a secretary at the United Methodist Church in Klemme and as a hostess at Bennigan's in Clear Lake. She enjoyed her family, grandchildren, sports and exercising. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Miriam Circle, V.F.W. Auxiliary and the Garner Bowling Association.

She is survived by her son, Rick Hartzell of Cedar Falls and his children, Nate and Amanda; her daughter, Jody East and her husband, Stephen, and their two sons, Jess and Jay, of Garner; five sisters and brothers, Lucille Drugg, of Forest City, Hilda Bell, Orville Kropp, Viola Kropp and her husband, Leon and Lester Kropp, all of Garner; one sister-in-law, Grace Hartzell, of Garner; and a brother-in-law, Dale Hartzell, of Ankeny; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hartzell, Dec. 13, 1972; her parents, August and Rosa Kropp; a sister, Relma Finn; and two brothers, Caris "Barney" Kropp and Gilbert Kropp.

OSAGE - Alva J. Siebels, 98, of Osage, died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Alva J. Siebels was born Oct. 29, 1901, at Amber, the son of Augusta and Grace (Oltman) Siebels. He attended a one-room school until the age of 8, when the family moved to Monticello. He graduated from Monticello High School. He worked in a drug store earning money to attend the University of Iowa, where he majored in pharmacy and graduated in 1928. He worked in several places and came to Osage in 1932, where he worked for Brown and Lashbrook drug store.

He married Ellen Walstad in 1935. The couple moved to Eagle Grove in 1937 and later to Cherokee. In 1942 they moved to Moline, Ill., where they lived for 50 years. The couple returned to Osage in 1992.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen, of Osage; one son, Allen Siebels and wife, Deborah, of Hiram, Ga.; one stepdaughter, Shirley Serleth and husband, Morris, of Osage; eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother.

SHEFFIELD - Shirley J. Harris, 70, of Sheffield, died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Shirley Jo Harris was born on Sept. 6, 1929, at Aledo, Ill., the daughter of Orville and Dora Hopes Rube. She moved with her family at a young age to Sheffield where she was educated.

She met and married Gerald Harris on June 6, 1947, in Clear Lake. She worked at the co-op in Sheffield as well as the bank. Shirley Jo and Gerald lived in Des Moines part time where she worked at Ardan's Jewelry. The couple moved back to Sheffield permanently in 1986. She enjoyed town history, golf, outdoor work and flowers. She also was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald, of Sheffield; a son, Michael and his wife, Sue, of Sheffield, and son, Patrick, of Salem, Ore.; as well as one sister, Mrs. Cleone Harrington of Sheffield.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Ray Rube and Rollin Rube; and one sister, in infancy

GEORGE V. WILCOX

LEROY, Minn.- George V. Wilcox, 57, died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2000) at Veterans Hospital in Minneapolis, where he had been a patient for approximately 10 days.

The funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, at LeRoy Lutheran Church with the Rev. Tom Kolden officiating. Burial will be in the LeRoy Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home in LeRoy and one hour prior to the service at the church Tuesday.

George Wilcox was born March 18, 1942, in rural Mitchell County, Iowa, the son of Carl and Marie (Reich) Wilcox. He attended the LeRoy schools and went on to serve in the United States Navy aboard the Kenneth D. Bailey which was deployed to Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

After his time in the service, he was employed by the Oliver Corp. at Charles City and John Deere and Co. in Waterloo. He later went to work for M & O Paper at International Falls, Minn., and then for the past several years he has been self-employed working on small engines and repair work.

He enjoyed working on anything mechanical and was always there when anybody needed help.

George is survived by his mother, Marie, of LeRoy; three sisters, June (Mrs. Larry) "Joe" Gansen of Hampton, Janet (Mrs. Gerald) Haagenson of Mabel, Minn., and Linda (Mrs. Tom) Walker of Lake City, Minn.; and five brothers, Robert (Lillian) of Alta Vista, Dale of Clear Lake, Leon (Robin) of Brownsdale, Minn., Russell of LeRoy and Thomas (Lisa) also of LeRoy.

George was preceded in death by his father, Carl, and an infant baby sister.

FOREST CITY - Myrtle J. Nelson, 90, of Forest City, died Saturday (Jan. 29, 2000) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Myrtle J. Nelson was born on Dec. 1, 1909, in Brookfield Township, Worth County, the daughter of Peter I. and Bella (Bergo) Petersen. She was baptized and confirmed in Bristol Lutheran Church and received her education in Tenold Country School.

She married Lester Everson in 1937. Mrytle managed the Arlington Hotel in Lake Mills for many years. She also worked at the Cool Springs Canning Company and the Lake Mills Graphic as a bookbinder. Lester died in 1956. Mrytle and her friends enjoyed going to the Surf at Clear Lake and this is where she met her second husband, Arthur Nelson. After they married, they moved to Kensett.

Myrtle owned and operated a café and bar there for 12 years. After retiring, the couple enjoyed traveling. Myrtle loved to do crafts and she would attend and sell at craft sales with her daughter. She loved to play bingo, where she met and made a lot of loving friends.

She enjoyed Bible study, playing cards, bird watching and spending time with her family. When Arthur died in 1991, she moved to Forest City to be closer to her family.

Surviving are a daughter and husband, Marlys and Harold Book, of Fertile; a stepdaughter, Shirley Petersburg and husband, Marlin, of Decorah, and their children, Wayne, Randy, Brian and Scott Petersburg; four grandchildren, Allan Book of Forest City, Floyd Book of Fertile, Debra Koester of Garner and Linda Levang of Fertile; and seven great grandchildren, Laura, Stephanie and Kara Swingen, Maria Levang, Chad, Aric and Angela Koester; many nieces and nephews; and a host of loving friends.
