NICOLE JILL JEPSEN

AMES - Nicole Jill Jepsen, 23, of 1400 Coconino Road, died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) in Dallas Center of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, Ames. An additional funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Salem Lutheran Church in Spragueville. Interment will follow in the Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery, Spragueville.

ALBERTA C. GILLESPIE

COLWELL - Alberta C. (Mrs. Harold) Gillespie, 70, 3209 Second St., died Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2000) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City. The Rev. Blair Rohde-Frank, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church at Floyd and West St. Charles United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the funeral home Friday.

JAMES WESLEY ROBINSON

BLAIR, Okla. - James Wesley Robinson, 81, formerly of Nora Springs, died Thursday (Dec. 30, 1999) in Altus, Okla.

Visitation was held Wednesday at the funeral home in Lone Wolf, Okla. Additional visitation will begin at noon Saturday at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs. A graveside committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

James Wesley Robinson was born on Sept. 26, 1918, at Green Castle, Mo., the son of Asa and Ida Mae (Guffey) Robinson. When he was small, the family moved to Iowa. He received his education in the Eldora school system.

He was united in marriage to Thelma Huen on Sept. 25, 1937, and remained so until 1973. They lived on farms in that area. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving from March to December 1945 at Camp Livingston, La. They moved to Nora Springs in 1950.

During his life he was employed at Deckers Meats in Mason City until he retired and moved to Blair, Okla., in 1976. While employed at Deckers, he first worked in the hog department, then the tin shop and finally as UPNA union field representative for several years, traveling to several states.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Deloris, and son-in-law, Jerry Treloar, of Blair, Okla.; a son, Duane, and daughter-in-law, Judy Robinson, of Anchorage, Alaska; a daughter-in-law, Diane Robinson Conley, and her husband, John, of Supply, N. C.; five grandchildren, David Robinson and Cory Robinson of Wasilla, Alaska, Misty (Treloar) Humphreys and her husband, Shane, of Carlsbad, N. M., Robin (Treloar) Manning and her husband, Eddie, of Altus, Okla., and Felicia (Treloar) Kruse and her husband, Ronald, of Yorktown, Va.; six great-grandchildren, Kristen Robinson, Austin Flores, Shane Howard, Shawn Manning, Kristofer Kruse and Kolby Kruse; a sister Reva Eide of Iowa Falls; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

James was preceded in death by his son, Donald Robinson in 1983; his parents; three brothers; and one sister.

OSAGE - Katherine Larson, 91, of Albert Lea, Minn., formerly of Osage, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) in Albert Lea.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, rural Osage.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Champion Funeral Home, Osage, where other arrangements are pending, (515) 732-3706.

ROSELLA (ROSIE) ANDERSEN

MASON CITY - Rosella (Rosie) Andersen, 71, died Wednesday (Dec. 22, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave., with the Rev. Frederick J. Wood officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

CHARLES CITY - Judy Ann Knight, 51, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City.

GARWIN G. "DYKE" WARD

NORA SPRINGS - Garwin G. "Dyke" Ward, 86, of Lot 11, Ponderosa Court, died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Carl A. Ries of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiating.

There will be no visitation. His body was cremated.

Garwin G. Ward was born Feb. 15, 1913, in Ellsworth, son of Harvey and Ethel Mae (Allen) Ward. He married Mary Doris McMinimen on May 31, 1969, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City.

Dyke attended school at Burchinal. He farmed with his father and later moved to California and worked as a mechanic at a Dodge dealership. He returned to Mason City in 1960, driving truck for Armours and then working as a mechanic at Sedars until retiring. He then continued to work at as a parking attendant for the police department.

Dyke loved visiting with family and his friends and especially with his best friend, Doris. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Moose Lodge and was a past member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Ward, Nora Springs; one son, Garvin Ward and his wife, Jan, Mason City; a daughter, Judy Calvert and her husband, Ron, Nora Springs; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one brother, Frank Ward, Wichita Falls, Texas; three sisters, Peggy Odom, Hannah Sandy and Bonnie May, all of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

Dyke was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Florence Austin, Arleigh Logan and Thelma Ryan; four brothers, Pat, Bill, Robert and Buck Ward; and two brothers and one sister in infancy.

ARLOTTE G. CLARK

BELMOND - Arlotte G. Clark, 82, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2000) at Belmond Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Belmond, with Pastor Lowell Halvorson officiating. Burial will take place in Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church Friday.

Arlotte, the daughter of Silas and Malina Erlien Sampson, was born on March 18, 1917, on the family farm near Belmond. Arlotte grew up in the Belmond area where she attended country school and graduated from Belmond High School in 1933. Following graduation from high school, she attended Waldorf College. After her college training, she taught country school for a time.

Arlotte was united in marriage with Frank Clark and to this union was born one son, Airell. She began working at General Mills/Central Soya in the early 1950s and worked there for over 25 years, until her retirement in 1981. She lived on the farm her entire life, until moving into the Belmond Health Care Center in November of 1997.

Arlotte was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Arlotte served in various ladies organizations and prayer groups in the church. She was a faithful teacher in the Sunday school for many years. Arlotte led Bible studies for the Christian Women's Club and is remembered fondly by many who were recipients of her offers to drive to various Christian meetings, appointments or other needs.

She was a member of the Sons of Norway and cherished the trip she was able to take to Norway with Amy. Another trip of great significance to her was a trip to Israel with her very good friend, Hermia Shefveland.

Arlotte especially enjoyed her grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening and canning the garden produce.

Arlotte is survived by one son, Airell, and his wife, Joan, of Belmond; three grandchildren, Richard and his wife, Lynnette, of Belmond, Amy Clark of Muskogee, Okla., and Airell and his wife, Karin, of Albany, Ore.; two great-grandchildren, Steven and Katarina; one brother, Merlin Sampson and his wife, Bertha, of Springfield, Mo., a sister-in-law, Kathleen Sampson of Pensacola, Fla.; a special niece, Cindy Sampson, of Birmingham, Ala.; and several other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank; and two brothers, Curtis and Norman.

EUNICE ELAINE FRERICHS

CLEAR LAKE - Eunice Elaine Frerichs, 64, died Saturday (Jan. 1, 2000) of congestive heart failure while wintering in Corpus Christie, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Thomas Healey officiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and will continue one hour prior to the service Friday.

The family suggests that memorials be directed to the Eunice E. Frerichs Memorial Fund.

Eunice was born June 1, 1935, the daughter of George and Florence (Ackerman) Eckhoff, of Dyke. She spent most of her childhood in Wellsburg.

After her marriage to Gary J. Frerichs on Jan. 22, 1952, the family spent 20 years in the military. During the family's military career, they were stationed in Tucson, Ariz., Spain, Cheyenne, Wyo., England and Dover, Del.

After retiring to Clear Lake, Eunice spent many years teaching ceramics and sharing her talent for creative arts. Eunice and Gary spent their time traveling, reuniting with family and friends. Eunice's most rewarding joys of her life were her husband, children and grandchildren.

Eunice is survived by her husband, Gary; two sons, Barry Frerichs and his wife, Bonnie, of Puyallup, Wash., and Scott Frerichs and his wife, Shawn, of Clear Lake; three daughters, Candy Shepherd, of Dover, Del., Sandee Monahan and her husband, Troy, of Clear Lake, and Myrna Hallman and her husband, Al, of Swaledale; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Florence Eckhoff; her brother, Vernon Eckhoff; and stepmother, Fannie Eckhoff.

MILDRED OLIVE (GINTHER) GROSS

ROCKFORD - Mildred Olive (Ginther) Gross, "Aunt Millie," 97, died Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2000) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 W. Main St., Rockford, with the Rev. Rosemary Rohde-Frank officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date.

The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until the service time at the funeral home Friday.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to direct memorials to the Mildred Gross Memorial Fund.

Mildred was born April 22, 1902, the daughter of George and Elizabeth (Slice) Ginther, in Melbourne. When Mildred was 6, she moved with her family to Rockford. She attended Rockford Community School and graduated in the class of 1922.

She later moved to Mount Carroll, Ill., where she taught school for several years. Mildred was united in marriage to Heine Gross and the couple made their home in Savanna, Ill. Mr. Gross died in the early 1950s.

Mildred worked at the Rock Island Proving Grounds during the war. She was also employed as a desk clerk at the Savanna Hotel for several years until her retirement. Mildred moved back to Rockford in 1988 and resided in a mobile home on her nephew's farm west of Rockford. Tragedy struck Mildred's life when her home and all her possessions were lost to fire.

Following the fire, she moved into the Rockford Manor. She has been a resident of the Nora Springs Care Center for six years following a fall in which she broke her hip.

Mildred was a wonderful seamstress who enjoyed sewing even at the nursing home. Her family will always appreciate the crocheted afghans she made for them. She will always be remembered for the care and concern she had for her family.

Those thankful for having shared in Mildred's life include two nieces, Marilynne and her husband, Bill Gossett, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Jeanne and her husband, Bud Castle, of Waterloo; two nephews, Gary and Dennis Ginther of Rockford; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Heine; a half-sister, Cora; and three brothers, Eralsey, Wallace and Hoyle.

MARY LOU RASMUSSEN

COULTER - Mary Lou Rasmussen, 86, died Monday (Jan. 3, 2000) at her home in Coulter.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Morgan United Methodist Church, rural Dows. Burial will be in the Coulter Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Willim Funeral Home, Latimer.

RUSSELL L. HART

MASON CITY - Russell L. Hart, 77, of Mason City, formerly of Osage, died Tuesday (Jan. 4, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 819 Main St., Osage, with the Rev. Arthur Hill officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery with military rites performed by members of American Legion Post 278 of Osage.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage.

Russell was born March 16, 1922, at Vinton, the son of Russell A. and Melora (Lewis) Hart. He attended Vinton schools and graduated from Vinton High School. He received his bachelor of arts degree in business from Coe College in Cedar Rapids. He attended Stanford University and Indiana University.

Russell worked as a bank teller at the Vinton State Bank and in advertising sales for the Vinton Daily Times.

Russell married Virgil Virginia Bruhl May 10, 1947, in Vinton. The couple lived in Vinton until 1949 when they moved to Osage.

After moving to Osage, Russell founded the Osage Shoppers Guide. He also worked in advertising for the Mitchell County Press-News. Russell enjoyed playing the piano and trumpet and played "Taps" for many military funerals. He enjoyed sporting events and was an avid reader.

Russell and Virgil moved to Mason City in 1987.

He is survived by his wife, Virgil, of Mason City; two daughters, Peggy Sponheim of Mason City and Nancy Demro and her husband, Paul, of Cedar Falls; three sons, Terry Hart and his wife, Sue, of Overland Park, Kan., Brian Hart and his wife, Ellen, of Austin, Texas, and Dennis Hart and his wife, Ann, of Covington, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, James F. Hart, of Houston, Texas; and one sister, Frances Leidigh, of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

LEWIS A. DOCKHORN

HAMPTON - Lewis A. Dockhorn, 74, of Hampton, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 1999) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hampton, with the Rev. Jon Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery, with military rites provided by the Hampton Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

Lewis A. Dockhorn was born April 12, 1925 in Arcadia, Neb., the son of Glenn and Ella (Woodworth) Dockhorn. He received his education in Arcadia and Comstock, Neb. He served in the United States Navy during World War II.

He was united in marriage to Betty Montandon on Nov. 24, 1945 in Broken Bow, Neb. He was employed at Maytag and at Sorensen Motors in Hampton during his lifetime.

He was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hampton. He was a life time member of the DAV, VFW and the American Legion. He also enjoyed fishing and camping.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Betty Dockhorn, of Hampton; daughter-in-law, Jeri Dockhorn, of Clear Lake; sister, Grace and her husband, Sherman Sherbeck, of Vancouver, Wash., sister, Ora Mae Zahn, of Keizer, Ore., brother, Russell and his wife, Irene Dockhorn, of Ord, Neb., sister, Freda and her husband, Eldon Kokes, of Ord, Neb., brother, Gerald and his wife, Arwilda Dockhorn, of Lincoln, Neb., sister, Joan and her husband, Chris Weber, of Loveland, Colo., sister, Pearl Norton, of Lincoln, Colo., and brother, Darr and his wife, Arlene Dockhorn, of Grand Island, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Donald Eugene Dockhorn and Dennis Allen Dockhorn; sister, Gwen Cunningham; and two brothers, Anson and Milo Dockhorn.

KATHERINE H. LARSON

OSAGE - Katherine H. Larson, 91, of Albert Lea, Minn. and formerly of Osage, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at Brian's Elder Care in Albert Lea, Minn.

Katherine was born Nov. 17, 1908 in Cedar Township, Mitchell County, the daughter of Lauritz and Rachel (Nubson) Norby. She grew up in the Meroa & Rock Creek area. Katherine was confirmed on May 13, 1923 at Rock Creek Lutheran Church where she had been a member her whole life.

On July 8, 1934 she was married to Clifford Larson. They made their home on the family farm for 34 years, then retired and moved to Osage in 1968. In 1985 they moved to Albert Lea, Minn. to be near their daughter, Elizabeth Skov and family.

She truly loved spending time with her family. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Blessed be her memory.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, 3269 Foothill Ave., rural Osage, with the Rev. R. Dawson Tornes officiating. Burial will be in Rock Creek Cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Skov and her husband, Leverne, of Albert Lea, Minn.; one grandson, Lance Skov, of Albert Lea; one grandaughter, Leann Rivers and her husband, Kevin, of Des Moines; one great-granddaughter, Kaitlynn Rivers; and many friends and relatives.

ROSELLA 'ROSIE' ANDERSEN

MASON CITY - Rosella "Rosie" Andersen, 78, of 18 N. Ohio Ave., died Dec. 22, 1999 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave., with the Rev. Frederick J. Wood officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield.

There will be no visitation as her request was to be cremated. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church or the Rosella Andersen Memorial Fund.

Rosella "Rosie" Andersen was born Nov. 4, 1921 in Mason City, the daughter of Jacob and Katherine (Brunner) Dietz. She attended Mason City Schools. Rosie worked in the casing department at Decker Meat Packing for 40 years.

On May 17, 1952, Rosella was united in marriage to Clarence Andersen. She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Naomi Circle.

She will be missed by her family and they are:

NEWELL 'SANTA CLAUS' BUTTS

PLYMOUTH - Newell "Santa Claus" Butts, formerly of Plymouth, passed away peacefully and entered Heaven on Jan. 2, 2000. He was a remarkable and unforgettable man of many talents, much love and dedication to his family and community.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Deborah Stowers, of the United Methodist Church of Plymouth, officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Plymouth at a later date.

Newell's family will greet friends from 3 to 6 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to the Newell Butts Memorial Fund.

He was born in Plymouth on Aug. 30, 1913, to Truman and Frances Butts and was a lifelong resident of that area until moving to Waterloo in 1997.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Melva; his son, Frank, of Oceanside, Calif.; and his daughters, Marvel Harang, of Northwood, Deanna Ferstl, of Bowling Green, Ky. and Heather Ferden, of Waterloo. He will be missed by his 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and other precious family members. Also surviving him are his brother, Barton Butts; and sister, Mildred Mundt, of Grants Pass, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dorothy; brother, Roy; three grandchildren in infancy and one stepgreat-grandchild.

Newell will always be remembered as the real Santa Claus in North Iowa, having lived and played the part in schools, hospitals and shopping venues for 30 years in the Mason City area.

He was a retired engineer from the Rock Island railroad traveling the rails from Minnesota to Iowa, first shoveling coal on steam engines and later driving the prestigious passenger train.

Newell was an expert woodworker, avid gardener, square dancer and champion card player. He was awarded many prizes for tournaments in cribbage, five hundred, pinochle and canasta. Many of these tournaments were won while Newell and Melva spent winter months in Texas.

Grandpa Santa, as he was known to his immediate family, lived a full and joyous life and enjoyed being recognized by hundreds for his role as the real Santa Claus.

JULIA H. (NYHUS) JENSEN

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Julia H. (Nyhus) Jensen, 89, of San Diego, Calif. a former Mason City resident, passed away on Dec. 22, 1999 at Point Loma Convalescence Hospital in San Diego, after a prolonged battle with Parkinson's disease, arthritis and the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

Julia was born on Nov. 3, 1910, in Rugby, N.D., the daughter of Theodore and Jensina (Jenson) Dahl. Julia was born with a twin brother. They had an older sister and later a younger sister. The family soon moved to Dawson, Minn. and the children were raised there.

Jensina died while Julia was very young and her father remarried a neighbor, Caroline Falnes. Julia's twin brother died at the age of 21.

Julia married Sherman Nyhus on Aug. 6, 1930. While married to Sherman, she graduated from school as a Licensed Practical Nurse and she worked in that profession well into her late 60's. While nursing, she and Sherman served as pastors in churches both in Iowa and Minnesota. Following Sherman's death in 1967, Julia moved to Mason City where she worked in the local hospital and lived with her sister-in-law.

On Dec. 20, 1970, she married the Rev. Mark Jensen, a longtime friend. Mark and Julia lived in Portland, Ore., until his death on Christmas Day in 1990. Julia moved to San Diego in March of 1991.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Strawn, of San Diego, Calif.; and four Jensen stepchildren.

CEDAR RAPIDS - Suzanne Irene Quinby Troxell "SQT," 75, of 100 Thompson Drive S.E., of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday (Jan. 5, 2000) at her home following a long illness.

Survivors include a daughter, Sally Troxell and husband, Jeff, of San Diego, Calif.; three sons, Mark Troxell and his wife, Yvonne and Dan Troxell and his wife, Mary, all of Boston, Mass.; and Tim Troxell, of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Theodora Kracht, of Des Moines; and five grandchildren, Tighe, Erik, Phillip, Andrew and Sophie.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Millard in 1985; and a brother, M.J.

Suzanne was born Aug. 30, 1924, in Mason City, the daughter of Arthur James and Adelade Irene Ronayne Quinby.

She married Millard A. Troxell on June 15, 1946 in Borenquin Field, Puerto Rico.

She was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Chapter K.G. P.E.O., the Home Garden Club, and was the former owner of the Side Door Needlework Shop. Suzanne was a very avid needle worker.

MASON CITY - The light in our lives is dimmer today because we have lost someone we love so much. She is a mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. Most of all she is a friend. Mary will be missed by all who knew her. She will be remembered with gladness in our hearts.

Mary Lou Bryant, 67, of 620 S. Polk Ave., died Thursday (Jan. 6, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Mark D. Culham of Hanford Community Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home and visitation will resume until the time of the service at the funeral home Monday. At 7 p.m. today there will be a service performed by the Women of the Moose.

Mary Lou Bryant was born at Thornton, the daughter of Charles P. and Frances I. (Merchant) Miller. She attended Mason City schools.

On Feb. 7, 1953, she married M. Neil Bryant in Sioux Falls, S.D. They made their home in Mason City. She worked for many years at Mason City Laundry and also various other jobs in town. Mary Lou retired in 1998.

Mary Lou was a member of the Moose Lodge for many years as well as the Statler Brothers Fan Club.

She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, crocheting, cooking, listening to her scanner and visiting with her special friends, Ray and Martha, on her back porch. She was an avid Vikings fan and loved watching Nascar and stock car races.

Mary Lou is survived by her daughter, Becky Moorehead and her husband, Randy, Mason City; two sons, Tom Bryant and his wife, Carmen, Manly, and Brad Bryant and his fiance, Rachel Freese, Mason City; four grandchildren, BillieJo and Brandi Moorehead, Kyle Christopher Bryant, and Chelcie Faye Bryant; eight brothers and sisters, Donald J. Miller, Mason City, Duane Miller and his wife, Judy, Welaka, Fla., Ivan Miller and his wife, Marlene, Whittier, Calif., Joyce Francis, Mason City, Doris Dischler and her husband, Denny, Mason City, Vern Miller and his wife, Darcy, Mason City, Audry Johnson and her husband, J. P., Mason City, and Gary Miller and his wife, Marlene, Northwood; and many nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY - Jeffrey P. Snere, 49, of 919 N. Adams Ave., died Friday (Jan. 7, 2000). He lost his battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St., Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Algona, with the Rev. Steven Turner of Trinity Lutheran Church, Algona, officiating. Full veterans rites will be performed at the graveside by V.F.W. Post No. 2541.

Jeffrey P. Snere was born May 17, 1950, in Seattle, Wash., to John and Anita L. (Rabb) Snere. At a young age his family moved to Algona, where he attended St. Cecelia's Catholic Elementary School. He graduated from Algona High School in 1968.

Jeff entered the Navy right after high school and served until 1977. He then returned to Iowa and earned his degree in business and accounting from the University of Northern Iowa.

He worked as a certified public account in Green Bay for a short time and then moved to southern California, where he continued his career.

His family moved to Mason City in 1995. Jeff attended St. James Lutheran Church.

He loved life and enjoyed it to the fullest. He loved golfing and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles.

Jeff will be missed by his wife, Alice, and daughter, Brittney, Mason City; his son, Steven Snere, Seattle, Wash.; his brother, Greg Snere, Mason City; and his aunt, Virginia "Jiggs" Nickerson, Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

ARNOLD P. STAUDT

MARBLE ROCK - A funeral Mass for Arnold P. Staudt, 88, of Marble Rock, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville, rural Marble Rock, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Inurnment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Roseville.

There will be no visitation. At the request of Mr. Staudt, his body was cremated.

Arnold Peter Staudt was born July 23, 1911, in Union Township, Floyd County, a son of John Stephen and Anna (Yunk) Staudt, and died Friday (Jan. 7, 2000) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

He received his education in the rural schools near Marble Rock and later attended St. Mary's School in Roseville. He graduated from Marble Rock high School in 1929.

Arnold farmed in the Marble Rock area his entire life. On Nov. 20, 1945, he was united in marriage to Helen M. Laydon at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Nashua. To this union were born three children.

He was a charter member of the Marble Rock Lions Club since 1954, served as president of the Marble Rock Historical Society for several years, served on the Marble Rock City Council and the Farmer's Coop Elevator Board. He was instrumental in forming the Iowa Egg Council and served on its board for eight years.

Arnold has been active in the Boy Scouts of America since 1938, serving as a Scout Master, Executive Board member, and Scout Council Properties Committee member. He was instrumental in the acquisition of the land now known as the Winnebago Scout Camp.

He was a life-long, faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church at Roseville and Catholic Lay Chairman of the Archdiocese of Dubuque.

Living family members include his wife, Helen, of Marble Rock; one daughter, Diane Staudt of Des Moines; two sons and their spouses, Eugene and Robin of Delevan, Wis., and Jon and Ann of Des Moines; four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Quinn, Andrew and Genevieve; one sister, Elizabeth Wilkie, of Miami, Fla.; and one brother, Clarence and his wife, Evelyn Staudt, of Marble Rock.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Aloysuis Staudt.

MASON CITY - Ida Helen Adair, 94, died Friday (Jan. 7, 2000) at Heritage Care Center, 501 S. Kentucky Ave., Mason City.

Ida was born March 19, 1905, the daughter of Anton and Dikka (Lien) Strom in Worth County. She lived and worked on the family farm and attended rural school, graduating from the eighth grade in rural Joice. Ida was baptized and confirmed at the Bristol Church near Joice.

Ida was first married to Thomas Ellingson and to this union were born two girls, Truly and Dorothy.

She was then married on June 6, 1935, to Clifford Adair. Ida took care of Clifford for more than 10 years as he battled MS. Ida's crustiness and tough exterior was what gave her the strength to endure life's many hardships. But there was a softer and gentler side of Ida as well.

Ida's passion was doing embroidery and crocheting; she called it "fancy work." She lived in and around the surrounding communities all of her life, the last 53 years in Mason City.

Those thankful for having shared in Ida's life include two daughters, Truly I. Levorson of Lake Mills, and Dorothy A. Munyon of Omaha, Neb.; one sister, Lottie Ofstedahl of Albert Lea, Minn.; five grandcildren, Marcia Turvold of Florissant, Mo., Ronald Levorson of Albert Lea, Minn., Medara S. Winter of Lake Mills, Grant B. Staton of Omaha, Neb., and Lori A. Abel of Plattsmouth, Neb.; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family of Ida Bertha Gertrude Bast has requested that memorial contributions be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura or to Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City in her memory.

Ida Bertha Gertrude Bast was born on Jan. 16, 1906, in Joliet, Ill., the daughter of Louis and Amelia (Affeldt) Hiller. She was baptized on Oct. 10, 1917, in St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Joliet, Ill., and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation on June 26, 1921, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Garner. She received her education in the Ventura school system.

She was united in marriage to Clarence Bast on Dec. 10, 1924, at St. Boniface Catholic Church parsonage in Garner. He preceded her in death on Dec. 17, 1978. After their marriage they farmed together on the family farm south of Ventura.

She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura, Recreation Hour Club, and Union Township Dozen Club.

Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Dorothy Held and her husband, Dr. Norman Held, of Ventura, and Delores Ackarman and her husband, Donald, of Clear Lake; six grandchildren, Craig Ackarman and his wife, Linda, of Ventura, Gene Hinrichs and his wife, Kathy, of Ventura, Vickie Nelson and her husband, Steve, of Emmons, Minn., Jill Wilhelm of Clear Lake, Gayle Petersen and her husband, Robert, of Ringstad, and Tim Ackarman of Ventura; seven great-grandchildren, Trisca Mick and her husband, Kent, Tami Dillavou and her husband, Zack, April Wilhelm, D.J. MASON CITY - Gerald "Jeff" J. Tickal, 71, of 626 Sixth Place S.E., died Saturday (Jan. 8, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Gerald was born Nov. 14, 1928, the son of Frank and Mary (Yeast) Tickal Sr. in Mason City. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served from December 1945 until Dec. 27, 1947. After serving his country, Gerald attended barber college in Waterloo.

Gerald was very proud of his 1931 Ford. He enjoyed entering local parades and antique car shows. Before Gerald got ready for the parade, he would always call his grandchildren to see if they would like to ride along.

Gerald loved to plant a garden and share the harvest with his neighbors. He could often be found tinkering with clocks or watches. Gerald looked forward to going to the Community Kitchen with his friends for coffee.

Those thankful for having shared in Gerald's life include his two daughters, Sheryl Tickal of St. Paul, Minn., and Pamela and her husband, James Hall, of Clear Lake; one sister, Kathrine and her husband, Dean Suby, of Denver, Colo.; one brother, Donald "Dick" Tickal, of Mason City; four grandchildren, Kevin, Timothy, Joey and Laura Allen; one great-grandson, Joseph L. Scott Duane Hall was born Dec. 23, 1962, in Britt, to Gilbert E. and Ethelene (Ward) Hall Jr.

He married Jamie E. O'Brien Jan. 7, 1988, inTacoma, Wash.

He served in the United States Army for 18 years, retiring in 1997 as Sgt. First Class and was employed as a technical writer for Almon TIAC, East Moline, Ill.

He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.

His whole life was devoted to his family, friends and job.

Irene Patricia Barrett was born March 16, 1909, at Crystal Lake, the daughter of Michael Joseph and Mary Anne (Byrnes) Barrett. She graduated from Crystal Lake High School and then from Hamilton Business College, Mason City.

She was the office manager for Beaver Associates and then was an associate and part owner of Ronglien Associates, a fund consulting firm with corporate offices in Milwaukee. She had major clients throughout the United States.

Following her retirement, she lived in Forest City until 1996, when she moved to the Manor in Mason City.

Irene enjoyed traveling. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

She is survived by three sisters, Loretta Keleher, Albuquerque, N.M., and Ella Muehe and Mary Barrett, both of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Bernadette Barrett Smith; and three brothers, Jack, James and Monsignor Norbert Barrett.

EVELYN (WALTKINS) MCKERCHER

MANLY - Evelyn (Watkins) McKercher, 99, died Thursday (Jan. 6, 2000) at the Risen Son Christian Village in Council Bluffs.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly, with the Rev. Robert Cumings officiating. Burial will be in Manly Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to service time at the church Tuesday.

The family of Evelyn McKercher has requested that memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association in her memory.

Evelyn (Watkins) McKercher was born on Aug. 19, 1900, in Logansport, Ind. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin in 1923, she moved to Mason City, where she was a librarian with the Mason City public Library.

She was united in marriage to Clair Albert McKercher on March 19, 1927. They farmed together on the family farm from 1927 to 1972, when they moved to a new home at 226 West Spring Street in Manly.

Clair preceded her in death on Jan. 18, 1976. Evelyn continued to live in Manly until moving to the Risen Son Christian Village in Council Bluffs, where she resided until her death Jan. 6, 2000.

Evelyn enjoyed flowers and traveling around the United States, but her great love and enjoyment was her family.

She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly, Heatherhill Chapter 493 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Manly, Manly Camera Club, Friendship Circle, and other community and civic organizations.

Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Elinor (McKercher) Sorenson, and son-in-law, Charles W. Sorenson, Evergreen, Colo., and Margaret (McKercher) Morgan, New Berlin, Wis.; two sons, John C. McKercher, Rio Verde, Ariz.., and Theodore and daughter-in-law, Marletta McKercher, Omaha, Neb.; seven grandsons; one granddaughter; 12 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clair Albert McKercher; and two brothers, Ross and Clair Watkins.

Monica was born April 25, 1914, near Stacyville, the daughter of John and Mary (Curry) Hofmeister. She received her education at Visitation Catholic School in Stacyville, graduating in 1932.

Monica married Ralph Green on April 15, 1936, in Stacyville. He died in 1951.

Monica married George C. Earl on Oct. 15, 1960, in Stacyville. He died in 1993.

Monica lived in Stacyville her entire life. She was employed by Dr. T. E. Blong and Dr. Robert Smith and later was the bookkeeper for the Stacyville Coop Creamery.

Monica was a member of the Christian Mothers. She enjoyed playing cards, bowling, shopping and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by a daughter, Theresa Hackenmiller and her husband, Leon, of Stacyville; grandchildren, Mary Jo Wilson, her husband, Goeff, and their children, Brittany and Morgan, of Rochester, Minn., Jean Knoepke, and her husband, Kevin, and their children, Joseph and Ryan, of Rochester, Minn., Larry Kramer and his wife, Sandy, and their children, Jeremy, Tara and Kayla, of Byron, Minn., Michael Hackenmiller, of Ventura, Julie Weir and her husband, Scott, of Grafton, Kathy Arnold and her husband, Steve, and their children, Madison and Sam, of Northwood, Susie Nettleton and her husband, Pat, and their son, Jon, of St. Ansgar, Jenny Currier and her husband, Jason, of Clear Lake, Fran Kramer, of Ames; two stepdaughters, Carol Colburn and her husband, Paul, of Waukesha, Wis., and Jane Fossum and her husband, Dick, of Big Bend, Wis.; a stepson, Frank Earl, of Ankeny; 10 step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.

Monica was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Ralph Green and George C. Earl; a daughter, Pat Kramer; a son-in-law, Leonard Kramer; three brothers, Joseph, Benedict and Vincent Hofmeister; and an infant sister, Veronica Hofmeister.

Don was born Feb. 13, 1919, in Wiota, the son of Max Carl and Martha R. (Book) Petersen. He graduated from Anita High School in 1937.

Don married Amy I. Robison Dec. 17, 1939, in Atlantic. They lived in Anita, Atlantic and Kimballton before moving to Mason City in 1966.

He worked for Safeway grocery as a meat cutter for 22 years. Following his retirement he worked for his son at Ken Petersen Builders.

Don was an active member of the evening Lions Club in Mason City and a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on various boards and committees.

Don was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife, Amy R. Petersen, of Mason City, his son, D. Kendall Petersen and his wife, Darlene, of Mason City; a daughter, Dianne Hansen and her husband, Lou, of Waukee; a brother, Eldred L. Petersen and his wife, Thelma, of Waukee; four grandchildren, Luanne Austin, Lesley Finn, Mark Hansen and Brian Hansen; and eight great-grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Julius.

ADAMS, Minn. - William Andrew Smith, 87, died Thursday (Jan. 6, 2000) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Adams, Minn., with the Rev. Gregory Leif officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Adams.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Adams Funeral Home, Adams, with a rosary beginning at 4 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home Wednesday.

William was born July 6, 1912, in Adams Township, rural Mower County, the son of John and Catherine (Gerber) Smith. He attended St. John's School at Johnsburg, Minn.

He was married to Magdalena Goergen on Oct. 3, 1936, at Johnsburg, Minn. They farmed in the Adams area and he was a partner in WW Livestock, buying and selling.

In 1973 they moved into Adams and were the Grand Marshals of the 1977 Dairy Days. In August 1998 William was inducted into the Mower County Livestock Hall of Fame.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and of Catholic Aid.

William enjoyed attending auction sales and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Maudie Smith, Adams; sons and daughters-in-law, Erland and Dorothy Smith, Adams, Albert and Shirley Smith, Rose Creek, Minn., Marvin and Lita Smith, Rose Creek, Minn., and Robert and Diane Smith, Adams; daughter and son-in-law, Johanna and Ralph Russell, Rochester, Minn.; 25 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Alvina Theobald, Richmond, Calif., and Marita and Wilmer Michels, Rose Creek, Minn.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul Smith, Adams, Roy and Helen Smith, Rochester, and Vernon (Pat) and Marcella Smith, Adams; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Paul Goergen, Adams; Ralph and Kay Goergen, Adams, Clements and Margaret Goergen, Adams, Naida Goergen, Austin, Minn., and Beatrice Goergen, Adams; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

William was preceded in death by his brother, Ralph, and his grandson, Jason Smith.
