MINNIE MAY

BRITT - Minnie May, 87, of Des Moines, formerly of Britt, passed away Tuesday (Aug. 22, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines from complications of a hip fracture.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Friday at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt, with the Rev. Robert Dodge officiating.

Visitation was held Friday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Central Iowa, 900 56th St., Des Moines, Iowa 50312.

Minnie May, the daughter of Freerk T. and Elizabeth (Gatena) Freerksen, was born Feb.7, 1913, at Kanawha. She attended school and graduated from Kanawha High School.

On Aug. 7, 1945, she was married to Vern E. May. They farmed near Corwith until 1960, when they moved to Britt, where Minnie worked as a medical record librarian at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital.

They moved to Des Moines in 1983. Vern passed away on Dec. 15, 1985. Since 1989, she had lived with her daughter, Verna, in Des Moines.

Minnie enjoyed her family, reading, crossword puzzles, sewing, needlework, fishing, music and watching birds.

She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Britt and Des Moines.

Minnie is survived by three daughters, Verna McBroom, of Des Moines, Phyllis Hubler, of Cedar Rapids and Elinor E. Keniston and her husband, Kenneth W., of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a stepson, Don May and his wife, Elizabeth, of Corwith; a stepdaughter-in-law, Alice May, of Algona; six grandchildren, Sarah, Gus and Ruth Griffin and Wade, Kyle and T.J. Keniston; and a sister, Clara Amsbaugh, of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vern E. May; three sisters, Martha Kraft, Tillie Nieman and Marie Shelton; a brother, George Freerksen; and two stepsons, Dick and Larry May.

MAYNARD D. JACOBSON

NORTHWOOD - Maynard D. Jacobson, 81, of Northwood, died Thursday (Aug. 24, 2000) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Paul Holmer and the Rev. Alan Stoa officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the East Zion Cemetery in Rake, with military rites conducted by the V.F.W. Post No. 6779, of Northwood.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South in Northwood.

Maynard was born on Aug. 22, 1919, in Winnebago County, to Carl and Minnie (Quam) Jacobson. Maynard entered the United States Army on Aug. 15, 1941, and served until October 11, 1945, 28 months of which were in the South Pacific.

He married Edith Johnson on Sept. 4, 1945, in Rake. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood; a life member of the V.F.W. Post No. 6779 and a member of AA for 46 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two infant granddaughters.

Maynard is survived by his wife, Edith, of Northwood; two sons, Merle and his special friend, Kay Reese, of Minneapolis, Minn. and Bruce and his wife, Dawn, of Albert Lea, Minn.; one daughter, Laura and her husband, Vincent Mangan, of Spring Valley, Minn.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Vernon and his wife, Georgia, of Rake, and Dr. Duane and his wife, Marcia, of Ankeny; two sisters, Clarine and her husband, Jack Steinberg, of Buffalo Center, and LaVonne and her husband, Obert Jergenson, of Rochester, Minn.

LLOYD MILLER LERDAL

BELMOND - Funeral services for Lloyd Miller Lerdal, 93, of Belmond, will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond, with a 6:30 p.m. Masonic service. There will be additional visitation one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Lloyd Miller Lerdal, the son of Ole and Anna (Skiye) Lerdal was born July 6, 1907, near Goldfield. He was baptized and confirmed at the Lake Lutheran Church in Renwick and graduated from high school in Goldfield.

On Aug. 28, 1926, Lloyd was united in marriage to Ruby Knutson in the Evangelical Lutheran Church. They farmed near Goldfield and moved to a farm in Belmond in 1941. They operated the Standard Oil station in Belmond from 1952 until their retirement in 1973.

Lloyd was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, had been a member of the Belmond Chamber of Commerce and was a longtime member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Lloyd died on Friday (Aug. 25, 2000) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

Those thankful for sharing his life are his sons, Kenneth Lerdal and his wife, Marlene, of Thornton, Roland "Bud" Lerdal and his wife, Carol, of Berne, Ind., and Robert "Bob" Lerdal and his wife, Diane, of New London; daughters, Jan Meints and her husband, Glenn "Moo," of Belmond and Beverly Lande and her husband, Jim, of Sumner; grandchildren, Terry Lerdal and his wife, Deb, Linda Manasco and her husband, Glenn, Roger Lerdal and his wife, Barb, Janet Nellist and her husband, Scott, Judy Lerdal, Michael J. Lerdal, Becky Arthur and her husband, Rodney, Pam Rogers and her husband, Steve, Cindy Kinn and her husband, Tom, Lloyd Lande, Laura Grimm, Lisa Smith and her husband, Mark, Tom Lerdal, Greg Lerdal and his wife, Shelly and Richard Lerdal; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Orten Lerdal, of Goldfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruby, in 1996; two sons in infancy, Richard and Roger; son, Tom; grandson, Alan Lee; great-granddaughter, Kimberly; daughter-in-law, Shirley; three sisters, Myrtle, Lillian and Helen; and two brothers, Joe and Verner.

GLADYS D. VARRELMANN

HAMPTON - Funeral services for Gladys Dorothea Mabel Varrelmann, 84, of Hampton, will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer, with the Rev. Jeff Long officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

Gladys Dorothea Mabel Varrelmann was born Dec. 22, 1915, in Hampton, a daughter of Henry F. and Matie (Dehning) Burmester. She died Wednesday (Aug. 23, 2000) at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.

Gladys was raised in Hampton and received her education in the Mott Township country school and Hampton High School. She was united in marriage on May 14, 1941, to Herbert A. Varrelmann at Evangelical Church in Latimer.

Gladys was a homemaker and was employed at one time at the Montgomery Ward Catalog Store in Hampton.

She was a member of the Immanual United Church of Christ.

She belonged to Women's Club, the Cemetery Society, Hampton Senior Citizens, the Hospital Auxiliary and the Philathea Group (church group).

She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, gardening, canning and entering her goods in the County Fair.

Gladys is survived by a son, Giles Varrelmann and his wife, Deborah, of Hampton; daughter, Linda Berry and her husband, Tom, of Hampton; granddaughter, Michelle Riordan, of Ames; grandson, John Riordan, of St. Johns, Virgin Islands; granddaughter, Jennifer and her husband, Larry Lunzer, of Superior, Neb.; grandson, Steve Berry, of West Des Moines; grandson, Kaleb Varrelmann, of Hutchinson, Minn.; granddaughter, Emily Varrelmann, of Storm Lake; grandson, Eli Varrelmann, of Hampton; a sister-in-law, Margaret Burmester, of Hampton; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Anderson, of Marshalltown.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Janine Riordan; son-in-law, Daniel Riordan; brother, Rueben Burmester; and sister, Florence Anderson.

ALVIN HAROLD RIIS

HAMPTON - Alvin Harold Riis, 82, of Hampton, died Thursday (Aug. 24, 2000) at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility, following a series of strokes.

Alvin was born June 28, 1918, on a farm near Coulter, to Andrew and Julia Larsen Riis. He was baptized at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Coulter. He moved to Minnesota with his family at 18 months of age. He was confirmed at Midway Lutheran Church near Oakland, Minn.

He attended rural schools and one year of high school in Austin, Minn. The family moved back to the family farm near Coulter and Alvin graduated from Dows High School in 1938. He had recently attended his 62nd class reunion.

He was married to Ardyce Hinckley on April 5, 1942. Two daughters, Beverly and Susan, were born to them. The family moved to Ross Township, east of Chapin, in 1951.

Alvin served on the boards of the Franklin County Farm Bureau and the Hampton Creamery. He served on the Sheffield-Chapin School Board for 15 years, five years as chairman. As a member of Zion St. John Lutheran Church in Sheffield, he served as a Sunday school teacher, brotherhood officer, on the church board, and one year as chairman of the narthex building committee.

In 1981, Alvin and Ardyce returned to Hampton, where they were members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He was a past member of the Franklin County Activity Center, serving as chairman for two years. He was also a past member of the Hampton Forum Club, and was active at the Hampton Senior Center.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Ardyce; his daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Chip Sperry, of Brooklyn Center, Minn., and Susan and Larry Bruxvoort, of Garner; granddaughters, Valerie Sperry, Brooklyn Park, Minn., Amy Sauke and her husband, Chris, of Guttenberg, and Jana Bruxvoort, of Bozeman, Mont.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Freebert and Irvin; and sisters, Vernetta Erickson and Elvera Riis.

As a continuation of his service to others, he chose to donate his remains to the Mayo Medical Foundation for the advancement of medical science.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial gifts. Memorial gifts will be used to establish a scholarship at the Sheffield-Chapin-Meservey-Thornton High School and a campership fund for youth from St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 27) at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hampton, with the Rev. Jon Anderson and the Rev. Karla Griffen officiating.

CLARION - Donna Maxon, 51, of Clarion, died Thursday (Aug. 24, 2000) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Church of Christ in Clarion. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Willim Funeral Home in Clarion, with Mark Young officiating.

CHARLES CITY - Helen (Mrs. James) Gueffroy, 81, formerly of 1213 Riverside Dr., died Thursday (Aug. 24, 2000) at the Waverly Municipal Hospital.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, with a vigil wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

DUMONT - Henry Freese, 97, of Dumont, died Friday (Aug. 25, 2000) at the Dumont Care Center.

Graveside services will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont, with the Rev. Robert Connor officiating.

CHARLES CITY - Ansel L. Ellis, 92, of 801 Fifth Ave., died Friday (Aug. 25, 2000) at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, with the Revs. Solomon and Sarah Rohert-Odoom, pastors of the Grace United Methodist Church of Floyd, officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens south of Charles City.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hauser Funeral Home, with the family greeting friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until time of services on Monday at the funeral home.

MASON CITY - James J. Hauser, 67, of Mason City, died Saturday (Aug. 26, 2000) at the USA Health Care.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

BRITT - Randy Howlett, 52, of Ames, died Saturday (Aug. 26, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City. He had been undergoing chemotherapy for non-Hodkin's lymphoma.

Friends may greet the family from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, Britt. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

BETTY CARPENTER

MASON CITY - Betty Carpenter, 77, of 724 S. President Ave., died Saturday (Aug. 26, 2000) at her home, with all her children present.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Family requests memorials be given to the Betty Carpenter Memorial Fund.

Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and one hour prior to services today at the church.

Betty Lou Carpenter was born Dec. 8, 1922, in Mason City, the daughter of John and Nellie (Dunbar) Proscovec. She attended Mason City schools.

She was united in marriage to Glen E. Carpenter on April 4, 1940, in Northwood. She enjoyed spending time with her family and she loved the companionship of her dogs, Snoopy and Bessy, and her cat, Maxi. She dedicated her life to raising and caring for her eight children.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Ronald Carpenter and wife, Lora, Jerry Carpenter and his wife, Sandy, Raymond Carpenter and his wife, Tammy, and Robert Carpenter and his wife, Julie, all of Mason City; daughters, Wendy Patton and husband, John, Sandy Fox and husband, Gary, Connie Greenan and Dan Greenan, and Kay Speaker and husband, Chris, all of Mason City; grandchildren, Amy and Jeffrey Morris of Jacksonville, Fla., Angela Carpenter, Mary and Tom Schneider of Decorah, Ed and Kenda Patton of Ventura, Ben and Melanie Patton, Angel Patton, Jason Fox, Jennifer and Dane Bjugan, Stacie Jo and Mallory Carpenter, Jamie, Shay, and Dillon Carpenter, Ben and Sara Ebeling, Addie Carpenter, Tricia and Tiffany Greenan and Samantha Speaker; great-grandchildren, Ronnie and Jorden Morris of Jacksonville, Fla.; brother, Jack Proscovec and his wife, Beverly, of Mason City; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two children, Larry and Linda in infancy, three brothers, Willard, John and Charles, and two sisters, Dorothy Murl and Helen Kittleson.

DELORES E. FISCHER

CLEAR LAKE - Delores E. Fischer, 71, of 506 N. Fourth St., died Saturday, (Aug. 26, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake. The family suggest memorials to Zion Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Delores was born October 1, 1928 in Story City, the daughter of Iver and Sadie (Evans) Toft. She moved with her folks to Alleman, Iowa and then to Clear Lake, and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1946. She then continued her education at Waldorf College in Forest City.

Delores worked for Imperial Seed Co. in Clear Lake from 1948-1951 and then started working for Clear Lake Bank and Trust from 1951-1964, and 1970 until her retirement in 1990. She married Robert Fischer Jan. 27, 1963 at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Delores enjoyed her cats, going to flea markets, eating out, golfing, bowling, watching sports on TV, reading, traveling to Eureka Springs and Branson to watch the shows and looking at old barns, taking pictures of them on their trips and collecting beanie babies.

She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake and the Clear Lake Lioness.

Delores is survived by her husband, Robert Fischer, of Clear Lake; son, Alan Fischer and his wife, Cheryl, of Appleton, Wis., two grandsons, Jason and Jeremy Fischer; and one brother, David Toft and his wife, Marjorie, of Savage, Minn..

She was preceded in death by her parents.

NORMAN O. SMYTHE

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Norman O. Smythe, 84, of West St. Paul, died Friday (Aug. 25, 2000).

Norman was born in 1916 in St. Paul, Minn. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific theater. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 285.

Norman is survived by his wife, Helen (Alice); three sons, Norman and his wife, Carol, William and his wife, Becky, and Michael; a daughter, Christine Smythe; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred (LeRoy) Murray, Alma Rose Powell; two brothers, Walter (MaryAnn) Smythe and Robert (Marlys) Smythe; and nieces, nephews and friends.

Norman was preceded in death by his brother George Smythe.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, 315 15th Ave. N., South Saint Paul. Interment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

WAVERLY - Christopher H. Loots, 37, of Waverly, formerly of Iowa City, died Sunday (Aug. 27, 2000) at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly, with the Rev. Michael Burk officiating. The body was cremated and burial of the cremains will be at a later date.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service on Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

DOROTHY J. COUNSELL

OSAGE - Dorothy J. Counsell, 69, of Osage, passed away Sunday (Aug. 27, 2000) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 833 Ash in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis W. Hanson and the Rev. Jerry Newland, officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

There will be a V.F.W. Auxiliary memorial service at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home.

The family requests memorials be given to the Dorothy Counsell Memorial Fund.

Dorothy Jean Counsell, daughter of Frank and Clara (Cummings) Tyler, was born June 19, 1931 on a farm near Stacyville. She attended Osage Schools graduating in 1948 at the age of 16.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Gene F. Counsell on June 4, 1949, at the United Methodist Church in Osage. She dedicated her life to raising and caring for her three children and working in partnership with her husband on their farm.

After the death of her husband, Gene, on May 27, 1977, she moved to Osage and spent the following 20 years caring for her parents. She loved to bake and cook for family and friends.

Dorothy was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary of the VFW Osage Post No. 7920 holding the following offices: Local; conductress and community activities chairman, served as auxiliary president for five years. Last five and one-half years as the auxiliary treasurer and auxiliary cancer chairman. Third District level; served as color bearer for many years. Third District Secretary and chairman in these programs; Americanism, Youth Activities, Community Activities, Safety, National Home, and Rehabilitation. The last 13 years she has served as District Treasurer and the last few years as Deputy Chief of Staff for the Third District. Department wise, Dorothy served as Department Color Bearer #2 for many years. She was State Publicity Chairman for two years, her first year as Publicity Chairman; she took first place national award on the best press book. She received the National President's Plate.

FOREST CITY - Francis V. Hill, 74, of Forest City, died Monday (Aug. 28, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City, with the Rev. Doug Farrell officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.

ORA D. LYMAN

INDIANOLA - Ora D. Lyman, 82, formerly of Mason City, died Tuesday (Aug. 22, 2000) at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at Overton Funeral Home, Indianola. A memorial service will be held at graveside at 1 p.m. today at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

There will no visitation.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Panda Bear Program at the San Diego Zoo.

Ora was born May 15, 1918, in Mason City to Roy and Martha (Jackson) Lyman.

He served in the U. A. Army during World War II in the European Theater. He was also a POW. Following the war, he again lived in Mason City for several years with his brother.

He was a patient at the Knoxville VA for 14 years before moving to Indianola in 1956 to reside at the home of Ralph and Opal Nash. Later their daughter, Carol Grover, was his caretaker.

He loved to garden and to play golf . He learned how to play while caddying in Mason City as a teenager. Ora was always a very polite person and very congenial.

Ora is survived by his brother, Roy and his wife, Donna, of LeMars; a special friend and caretaker for many years, Carol Grover; and a sister-in-law, Lois Lyman of Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Richard.

MURRAY C. DUCK

OSAGE - Murray C. Duck, 81, of Osage, died Monday (Aug. 28, 2000) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn. of natural causes.

Murray was born Oct. 19, 1918, at Longford, Kan., the son of Linford and Bessie (Youse) Duck. Murray was raised in Kansas, where he attended school. He graduated from Longford High School in 1936.

He was united in marriage to Helen Mae Lee at the Little Brown Church in Nashau, on Feb. 14, 1941. They lived in Kansas for 18 months before moving back to Iowa in December of 1942. They farmed in the Osage area until 1983, when they retired and moved to Osage.

Murray was a member of the Osage Senior Citizen's Center, where he was president for four years. He was also an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, serving on many different church boards, and many other boards of Mitchell County organizations.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 833 Ash St. in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott, officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. today at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Mae Duck, of Osage; one daughter, Jana D. Duck, of Clear Lake; two sons, Miles M. Duck and his wife, Cheryl, of Mason City, and Melvin L. Duck, of Silverton, Ore.; one sister, Ruth Dechant and her husband, Gene, of Wichita, Kan.; three grandchildren, Angela Overcast and her husband, Allan, and their children, Anna and Anthony, of Billings, Mont., Laura Duck, of Ames, and Kendal Duck, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and five sisters.

ARLENE DOROTHY DIEMER

MANLY - Arlene Dorothy Diemer, 76, of Manly, died Sunday (Aug. 27, 2000) at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, with Pastor Paul Schaefer of the Plymouth Road Bible Church officiating. Burial will be in the Grant Center Township Cemetery, rural Hampton.

Friends may call from 4 until 6 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel and one hour prior to services on Thursday.

The family of Arlene Dorothy Diemer has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Mental Health Center of North Iowa in her memory.

Arlene Dorothy Diemer was born on Feb. 18, 1924, in Iowa Falls, the daughter of William and Gladys (Snyder) Welchko. She attended and received her education in the Iowa Falls School system, graduating from Iowa Falls High School.

After completing her schooling, she worked for the Princess Café in Iowa Falls. She was united in marriage to Robert Diemer in December of 1947, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He preceded her in death on Oct. 2, 1968. The family moved to a small acreage west of Plymouth in 1963, before moving to Manly in 1976.

Arlene loved reading the Bible, listening to gospel music, baking, walking and enjoyed doing volunteer work at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center and Opportunity Village in Clear Lake for many years.

She was a member of the Plymouth Road Bible Church in Plymouth.

Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, James Diemer and his wife, Bonnie, of Troy, Ill., and Larry Diemer and his wife, Colleen, of Saline, Mich.; five grandchildren, Cynthia Holcomb and her husband, Timothy, of Maryville, Ill., Randy Diemer, of Troy, Ill., Sandra Willtrout and her husband, Scott, of Collinsville, Ill., and Robert and Eric Diemer, of Saline, Mich.; one great-grandson, Ryan Holcomb; four sisters, Evelyn Hartema and her husband, Ed, of Iowa Falls, Marian Newton, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Kathryn Herteen of Des Moines and Shirley Shepherd and her husband, Cecil, of Des Moines; one brother, William Welchko of Des Moines; as well as other relatives and friends.

CLEO FREDERICK MCCLOUD

MASON CITY - Cleo Frederick McCloud, 82, of 302 Second St. N.W., died Friday (Aug. 25, 2000) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Cleo was born April 9, 1918, the son of Fred and Florence (McKenna) McCloud in Madrid, Iowa. On March 30, 1943, Cleo was united in marriage to Lucy Kelling in Albert Lea, Minn. To this union were born two children, Judy and Tom.

Cleo was a race enthusiast who enjoyed racing midget cars and go carts. He later operated the stock car track for many years. In his free time he could be found making jewelry and doing leather work.

Those thankful for having shared in Cleo's life include his daughter, Judy Stoltenberg of Fort Dodge; a son, Tom and his wife, Darlene McCloud, of Mesa, Ariz.; one brother, Clifford McCloud of Mason City; seven grandchildren, Mysti Anderson, Tammy Barlow, Andrea Tuthill, Greg McCloud, Laura McCloud, Scott McCloud and Heather McCloud; and seven great-grandchildren.

Cleo was preceded in death by his parents; wife Lucy; and one granddaughter, Michelle Rae Barlow-Kelley.

JAMES W. WALLING

WEBSTER CITY - James W. Walling, 61, of Webster City, died Monday (Aug. 28, 2000) at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames due to complications of diabetes.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Calvary Baptist Church in Webster City, with the Revs. Terry Davenport and Henry Jensen officiating. Burial will be at the Coulter Cemetery in Coulter, following services.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the Foster Funeral Home in Webster City and until 8:30 a.m. Thursday when the casket will be taken to the church.

James Wilson Walling, son of Mark and Mary Wilson Walling, was born April 15, 1939, in Davenport. He attended Spencer schools, graduating in 1957.

Jim served with the U.S. Marine Reserves and attended Buena Vista College (currently Buena Vista University) in Storm Lake, where he received degrees in history and speech. He received his Masters degree and Ed Specialist at the University of Northern Iowa and then served as superintendent of Grand Valley Community School at Kellerton.

After a period of farming in southern Iowa, Jim returned to the school business. He taught at an Indian reservation in Arizona and the Crow Creek reservation in South Dakota. He also taught one year in Tuntetuliac, Alaska, near the Berring Strait, and served as the superintendent of the Revere, Mo. school system.

On June 3, 1989, he married Patricia Busby Morris in Latimer, where the couple then resided. He was a substitute teacher for various schools in the area. The couple owned and operated The Neighbor's Place restaurant in Alexander from 1989 to 1991. They then moved to Des Moines where Jim taught at various schools in the Des Moines school system.

He returned to college in 1993 and received his Special Education endorsement. From 1993 to 1996, he taught Special Education in the Waterloo school system. In 1997 he received his permanent Special Education Certification and taught at Southeast Webster at Burnside until February 1999, when he had to retire due to failing health.

He will be remembered by his many friends for his sense of humor and his love of hunting, learning and cooking.

Jim attended Calvary Baptist Church in Webster City and was a member of the National Rifle Association, Izaak Walton League of Hamilton County and Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity.

He is survived by his wife, Pat; daughter, Cosie Leigh Walling; son, Travis James Walling; stepchildren, Sondra (Jim) Morris Donald, of Ames, Melissa (Bob) Worman Hill, of Belmond, Darren Morris, of Iowa City, and Todd (Michelle) Morris, of Clive; and four loving grandchildren, Haley Morris, Brooklyn Hill, Jacob Morris and Zachary Hill.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
