Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville and one hour prior to the service at the church Tuesday.

Gotchal Leonard Anderson, better known as "Pete," was born Dec. 30, 1914, in Lisbon, N.D., to Andrew and Rasmine (Hansen) Anderson. He came to Iowa as a young man with his two brothers to work as a farmhand. In 1937 he started working at Dolliver for Christina Hansen, managing the farm.

On May 4, 1940, he married Mabel Hansen, daughter of Christina Hansen, in Spencer. In 1942 they moved to an unimproved farm near Riceville. He had lived the last 53 years on the present farm. Gotchal and Mabel had five children: Larry, Nancy, Darrel, Dennis and Debra.

Gotchal loved his life as a farmer, enjoyed hunting and fishing trips and went on many fishing trips with family and friends. They have taken all the grandchildren to Canada except the three youngest. Upon retirement they spent several years in Mission, Texas. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and was so proud of them all. Everyone who knows him knows how he could laugh about stories and humorous incidents.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel, of Riceville; two sons, Darrel and his wife, Sue, of Riceville, and Dennis and his wife, Becky, of Lisbon, N.D.; two daughters, Nancy Lubbert of Riceville, and Debra Roth and her husband, Greg, of Beloit, Wis.; 19 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Ervin and Edmund, both of Lisbon, N.D.; and those special friends who have spent many evenings playing 500 and getting together for potlucks for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; three sisters; one son, Larry, in 1996; a daughter-in-law, Kay in 1994; and a son-in-law, Dean Lubbert in 1997.

GEORGE E. 'COONIE' SMITH

BELMOND - Funeral services will be held for George E. "Coonie" Smith, of Belmond, at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Belmond, with Pastor Celestyne DeVance officiating. George E. Smith, better known as "Coonie," the oldest of three, was born in Belmond, on March 13, 1923, to George and Mattie (Pals) Smith. He attended school through the 8th grade and worked on the farm until entering the United States Army during World War II. He was proud of his service, but never forgot the homesickness he felt.

After a four-year courtship, he married Genevieve Thayer on Aug. 27, 1945, in Belmond. They would have celebrated 55 years this month.

Coonie was known in many walks of life. First he had his own construction business, digging basements, hauling gravel and laying sod. In 1952, he went to auctioneering school in Mason City. After working 40 years he retired in 1990 due to ill health. Coonie raised Purebred Hampshire hogs, which in a few short years gained him several national awards.

He was a softball pitcher for many years and never lost his love of going to games. He loved attending all sporting events, even after his kids left high school and college. He loved fishing, boating, playing cards and spending time looking at new and used cars. He would talk with car dealers all over the country and "stranger" was not a word in his vocabulary.

He enjoyed winters in Texas since his retirement. His laugh was loud and infectious and he loved to tease. He was opinionated and he definitely left a long-lasting impression whether you liked it or not.

He was proud of his children's accomplishments. He was a strict father who taught and expected only honesty, integrity and love of God, Country, Heritage, family and life. He taught his children to be hardworking, to always do their best and appreciate what they have. This has been passed on to his grandchildren and will be his true legacy to all of us.

Coonie died on Tuesday (Aug. 8, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. He had physically gotten weaker from his long illness, but like his personality, he was stoic, strong, and had a great sense of humor until the end.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, children and grandchildren, who had great respect and admiration for him.

He is survived by his wife, Genevieve; Pamela Kinsey, oldest daughter who lives in Farmington, Mich.; son, Wayne Smith, in Yorktown, Va.; daughter, Gretchen Drake, who lives in Lincoln, Neb.; sons-in-law, James Drake and Jack Kinsey; daughter-in-law, Debra Smith; grandchildren, Kristine, (oldest at 31), Mattie and Guy Nathan Kinsey; Andrea, Elizabeth and Michael Smith; Madison and Harrison (youngest at age 7) Drake; sisters, Irene Forbes, of Jacksonville, Fla. and Marlene Hansen, of Plymouth, Minn. God be with you til we meet again.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and stillborn son, Sherman, in 1961.

Tenold Funeral Home, (641) 444-4474.
