HAMPTON -Leona W. Rathman, 92, of Hampton died Sunday (July 30, 2000) at the Hampton Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hampton, with the Rev. Jon Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Hampton Cemetery.

KENNETH LEROY STOCKWELL

MASON CITY - Kenneth LeRoy Stockwell, 85, of 534 10th Ave. N., Clear Lake, died Sunday (July 30, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City after a lingering illness.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 3 until 5 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and also for one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Kenneth was born July 3, 1915, in Mason City, the son of Fred LeRoy and Emma Jane (Nihoff) Stockwell. He graduated from Garner High School in 1935. After graduation, he worked for his father, learning welding.

On May 28, 1938, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Anderson at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. Kenneth worked at the Ford Garage as a service manager for many years. Later, he owned and operated Stockwell Radio and T.V. in Clear Lake.

Kenneth enjoyed growing flowers, especially roses and geraniums. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a former member of the I.O.O.F. of Clear Lake.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Evelyn, of Clear Lake; one daughter, Brenda Pringle and her husband, John, of Ankeny; three grandchildren, Scott Pringle of Purvis, Miss., Tammy Pringle of Ankeny, and Nicole Colixtro and her husband, Juan, of Charles City; two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Ana Marie Colixtro; one sister, Luella Davis, of Clear Lake; and many nieces and nephews.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Vera Howe, Mildred Hayes, and Arlene Stockwell; and one son, Kenneth Alan Stockwell.

CHARLES CITY - Ruth (Mrs. Harold) Eastman, 77, formerly of Charles City, died Monday (July 31,2000) at the Lenoir Retirement Community in Columbia, Mo.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Greenwood Cemetery in Nashua, with the Rev. Dianne Christopher, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church of Charles City, officiating.

PAUL ALLEN RISTAU

GARNER - Paul Allen Ristau, 52, of 640 Golf View Dr., died Sunday (July 30, 2000) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, from a heart attack while playing golf, his favorite pastime.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner, with the Rev. Robert Bronson officiating. Interment will be in Concord Cemetery in Garner.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel and then one hour before the services on Wednesday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Paul Allen Ristau Memorial Fund.

Paul was born March 11, 1948, in Mason City, the son of Vernon Conrad Ristau and Ruth Augusta (Geilenfeldt) Ristau. Paul graduated from Meservey-Thornton High School in 1966. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served from 1966 to 1970.

In July 1966, Paul married Elaine Carolyn Lacey of Meservey. They had three children Kent Allen, Kristine Alane, and Kimberly Ann. After the service, Paul worked in Northwood for the DOT, and Carroll George Inc. until 1975, when he started his own company, PAR Products in Klemme.

Paul loved to golf, play cards, go to horse races and watch The Three Stooges movies with his grandchildren.

Paul is survived by his wife, Elaine Ristau, of Garner; son, Kent and his wife, Christine, of Nevada, with their three children, Lance, Leisha and Logan; daughter, Kristine Ristau-Lee and her husband, Mark, of Cedar Falls, and their three sons, Matthew , Jacob and Jerad; and daughter, Kimberly Lubbert and her husband, Jeremy, of Grundy Center; two brothers and one sister, Donald Ristau, of Garner, Robert Ristau and his wife Delores, of Thornton, and Linda Eggleston and her friend, Gary Iverson, both of Albert Lea, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Gerald Ristau; his grandparents; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

ALLISON - Luella Florendena Hummel, 95, of Allison, died Sunday (July 30, 2000) at the Allison Health Care Center.

HENRY HOLM HEDEGARD

PLYMOUTH - Henry Holm Hedegard, 94, of Plymouth, died Wednesday (Aug. 2, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

According to his wishes his body was cremated, with memorial services and inurnment in the Oakwood Cemetery in Plymouth at a later date.

Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, is in charge of arrangements.

Henry Holm Hedgard was born Nov. 10, 1905, in Dexter, Minn., the son of Christian and Caroline (Holm) Hedegard. He attended and received his education in the Dexter, Minn., school system.

After completing his schooling, he worked on the Milwaukee Railroad for 32 years and retired as a section foreman and also worked for Decker's Meat Packing Company in Mason City until his retirement in 1970.

He was united in marriage to Lucille Christianson on Oct. 25, 1938, in Mazeppa, Minn. She preceded him in death on Aug. 28, 1979.

He enjoyed gardening and flowers, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Roger Hedegard and his wife, Kay, of Plymouth, Rodney Hedegard and his wife, Marilyn, of Manly, and Norma Paulsen and her husband, Robert, of Plymouth; 11 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Viola Hodge of Austin, Minn.; and a brother, Erland Hedegard and his wife, Toni, of Bordan, Ind., as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one grandson, four brothers and one sister.

VIOLA ARETTA ELSBURY

MASON CITY - Viola Aretta Elsbury, 85, of 1125 First St. N.W., died Tuesday (Aug. 1, 2000) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with Pastor Jeffrey Dahlin officiating. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the St. Ansgar City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

Memorials may be directed to the Viola A. Elsbury Memorial Fund.

Viola was born Sept. 20, 1914, in Wheelerwood, Iowa, the daughter, of Henry and Rachel (Wood) Tucke. She graduated from Manly High School in 1932.

She was united in marriage to Marvin Robert Edgington at the Little Brown Church in Nashua in 1933. While farming near Carpenter, two children were born to this marriage, Jack and Bonnie. Marvin died in 1959.

In 1965, Viola married Archie Elsbury at the First United Methodist Church Chapel in Mason City. She had resided in Mason City since that marriage and had been a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 35 years.

Viola was very proud of her children and grandchildren and will be missed by her family and many friends.

Viola is survived by one son, Jack Edgington and his wife, Marilyn, of St. Ansgar; one daughter, Bonnie Jongerius and her special friend, Bill Singer, of Spirit Lake; six grandchildren, Chris and Tom Edgington of St. Ansgar, Anne McMillan of Independence, Corinne Ditsworth of Burt, Connie Petersen of Ankeny, and Steve Krause of Granger; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Viola was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Vern Tucke; and her husbands, Marvin Edgington and Archie Elsbury.

MASON CITY - Reece W. Adams, 85, of 808 11th St. N.E., died Tuesday (Aug. 1, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Jeffrey A. Dahlin officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Reece W. Adams was born Nov. 25, 1914, in Chatum, Ontario, Canada, the son of Charles and Marion (Able) Adams. At a young age, his family moved to Mason City and he became a U.S. citizen. He attended Mason City schools.

Reece worked for Jacob E. Decker & Sons for a time, then for Lehigh Portland Cement for 33 years, retiring in 1980.

On June 6, 1946, Reece was united in marriage with Mildred A. Booth in Mason City.

Reece was a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 50 years. He enjoyed playing cards and spending time with family and friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mildred A. Adams of Mason City; son, Reece C. Adams of Iowa Falls; stepson, Gordon Dye and his wife, Betty, of Mason City; stepdaughter, Jacqueline Mansfield and her husband, Dennis, of New Caney, Texas; three granddaughters; eight stepgrandchildren; a special niece, Georgia (Deede) Graf and her husband, Arthur, of Mason City; and other nieces and nephews.

CLEAR LAKE - Matthew John Gruis, 45, of Ogden, Utah, formerly of Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Aug. 2, 2000) in Joice, after a long battle with cancer.

JAY L. GRIMM

CLEAR LAKE - Jay L. Grimm, 65, of 12913 Grouse Ave., Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Aug. 2, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen and the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and then begin at 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home until one hour before the services at the church.

Jay was born Oct. 13, 1934, in Sac City, the son of Homer and Beulah (Wilson) Grimm. Jay moved with his parents in the late 1930s to a farm north of Ventura. He graduated from Ventura High School in 1953. He lettered four years in football, basketball, baseball and played cornet in the high school band.

Jay married Virginia Ashland June 13, 1953, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. He worked for Coyier Service Station in Clear Lake for six years. In 1959 he started working for Arwell-Orkin as a service tech. He retired in 1995 after 36 years on the job, the last 16 years as the branch manager in Mason City.

Jay married Marian Casperson Ashland April 16, 1982. He enjoyed attending and supporting his kids during their sporting events and also was an avid Hawkeye and Viking fan.

Jay was known at Zion Lutheran Church where he was a member and ushered. He was fondly known as the "candy man," since he was always giving candy to the kids.

Jay is survived by his children, Lowell Grimm and his wife, Carrie, of Lakeville, Minn., Doug Grimm and his wife, Willi, of Clear Lake, Chris Grimm and his wife, Mary, of Bettendorf; four stepchildren, Susan Hrubes and her husband, Marvin, of Woodbridge, Va., Tom Ashland and his wife, Georgia, of Clear Lake, Jane Ashland Trayers of Clear Lake, and Tim Ashland and his wife, Katie, of Farmington, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Thomas, Hannah, Desiree, Christina, Katherine and Carly Grimm and Delishia Folkerts; nine stepgrandchildren, Matthew Hrubes, Lisa Hrubes, Christopher Ashland, Jeremy Ashland, Lee Trayers, Danielle Trayers, Ashley Trayers, Amber Ashland and Kayla Ashland; one brother, Gordon Grimm and his wife, Esther, of Center City, Minn.; and one sister, Julia Crow and her husband, David, of Glendale, Mo.

RUTH AMELIA DETRA

MASON CITY - On June 7, 2000, our beloved mother, grandmother and sister, went to be with her Lord. Ruth Detra, 96, of Billings, Mont., formerly of Mason City, died at Rim Shadows Personal Care Home.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Richard "Rick" Eichenlaub of the First Christian Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be given to the First Christian Church.

Ruth was born Jan. 5, 1904, in Lake Mills to Bertina and Carl Godtland. Ruth taught country school in Iowa from 1923-1929. In 1926, Ruth married Lawrence Detra in the famous Little Brown Church in The Vale in Nashua. They moved to Morton, Wyo., in 1929, where they operated a general store. In 1932 they returned to Mason City.

Ruth was a loyal member of the First Christian Church of Mason City for more than 60 years.

She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, doing needlework and discussing politics. She never forgot a birthday. Ruth moved to Billings in 1994 to be closer to her son, Robert, and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence; a brother, Clifford; a sister, Valborg; and a granddaughter, Jody.

Survivors include a son, Robert Detra and his wife, Helen, of Billings; sisters, Lorraine, of Arizona and Connie Brown, of Iowa; a sister-in-law, Rachel Djuren, of Mason City; grandchildren, Mark Detra, of Mason City, Cheryl Hoover and her husband, Jim, of Billings, and David Detra, of Salinas, Calif.; nine great-grandchildren, Tracey Brock (Jeremy), Jeff Alitz (Angie), Jason Detra, Angela Detra, Brian Hoover, Matt Hagen, Kady Detra, Shaun Hoover and Nicholas Detra; and four great-great-grandchildren. Ruth is also survived by special friend, Denise McNamce.

ST. ANSGAR - A. Dean Hansen, 69, of St. Ansgar, died Wednesday (Aug. 2, 2000) at Pakashkan Lake, Canada.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in St. Ansgar Cemetery in St. Ansgar. Military honors will be conducted by Walter T. Enneberg No. 358 of the American Legion of St. Ansgar.

The family will receive friends from 9 until 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the first Lutheran Parish Center.

Dean was born on June 7, 1931, in Mitchell County, son of Arthur and Marie (Denning) Hansen. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. He graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1950.

On July 12, 1952, Dean was united in marriage to Elaine Thorson in San Antonio, Texas, while serving as a medic in the armed forces. He served in the Korean War for 13 months.

Dean returned home and farmed the family farm until his retirement in 1993. Dean enjoyed a life-long love of hunting and fishing. He had a gentle spirit and loved to spend time with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant daughter, Bobbi Lynn.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine, of St. Ansgar; four daughters, Donna Rachut and her husband, Jerry, of St. Ansgar, Diane Gasteiger and her husband, Ron, of St. Ansgar, Joni, of Pierre, S.D., and Janis Hackenmiller and her husband, Kent, of Grafton; three sons, Steve and his wife, Margie, of St. Ansgar, Scott and his wife, Jolane, of Toeterville and Brian and his wife, Jodie, of St. Ansgar; 21 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leora and her husband, Sylvan Stromley, of Lyle, Minn. and Lanita and her husband, Darwin Koster, of St. Ansgar; one brother, Duane and his wife, Nancy, of Fredricksburg, Va.; along with many nieces and nephews.

CLEAR LAKE - Matthew John Gruis, 45, of Ogden, Utah, formerly of Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Aug. 2, 2000) in Joice, after a long battle with cancer.

Graveside inurnment services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Mount Vernon Township Cemetery, with the Rev. Gary Johnson of Bethel Lutheran Church of Joice officiating. The cemetery is roughly three miles south of Burchinal on Jonquil Ave.

Matthew was born June 14, 1955, in Mason City, the son of Cornelius and Louise (Patton) Gruis. He worked for many years as a contractor for Lamb Engineering.

Matthew is survived by his son, Tad Gruis, of Ogden, Utah; two sisters, Marilyn Miller and Wendy Roberts, both of Joice; three brothers, Mike Gruis, of Forest City, Marcus Gruis, of Joice and Jody Gruis, of Pahrump, Nev.; and 11 nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY - Thomas D. Rewerts, 52, of 20 N. Quincy Ave., died Tuesday (Aug. 1, 2000) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with Pastor Karla Griffen of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Hampton officiating. Interment will be in Dumont Cemetery in Dumont.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Saturday at Major Erickson Funeral Home.

Memorials may be directed to the Tom Rewerts Memorial Fund.

Tom was born Nov. 10, 1947, in Hampton, the son of Henry and Alice (Stubbe) Rewerts. Tom was educated in the Alexander and Sheffield school systems.

He was united in marriage to Connie McDowell on Aug. 19, 1967, in Rockford. Tom worked at Andrews Prestressed Concrete in Clear Lake for 20 years.

Tom was always willing to help those in need. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and grandson.

Tom is survived by his wife, Connie, of Mason City; daughter, Julie Rewerts, of Mason City; son, Jason Rewerts, of Mason City; grandson, Kenyon Morrison, of Mason City; a sister, Della Speich and her husband, Norman, of Hampton; mother-in-law, Roseann Miller, of Rudd; sisters-in-law, Sharon Rewerts, of Villa Park, Ill., Sandra Kuhlemeier and her husband, Cork, of Rockford, and Cathi Hale, of Dayton; brothers-in-law, Jerry McDowell, of Burnsville, Minn. and Jim McDowell and his wife, Claudia, of Vancouver, Wash.; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and a brother, Richard, in 1987.

FOREST CITY - Maysil Gahan, 100, of Forest City, died Wednesday (Aug. 2, 2000) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Forest City, with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City.

HAMPTON - Martin A. Fink, 82, of Hampton, died Thursday (Aug. 3, 2000) at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton, with the Rev. Wayne Dobratz officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.
