VERNA M. JENSEN

MASON CITY - Verna M. Jensen, 87, of 15692 Lark Ave., Mason City, Saturday (Sept. 25, 1999) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Dean Swenson and Richard Davis officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. and until time of services on Tuesday.

Verna was born May 20, 1912, in Albion, Wyo., the daughter of August and Hattie (Olson) Lerwick. Verna attended and graduated from Jewell High School and went on to receive her nurses training at St. Anthony's Hospital, in Denver, Colo.

Verna married Lloyd A. Jensen on Aug. 2, 1937. She worked as a nurse at Americana Nursing Home and later Park Hospital.

Verna is survived by her sons, Arnold Jensen and his wife, Jane, of Mason City, and Howard Jensen and his wife, Sharon, of Mequon, Wis.; daughter, Carolyn Jensen, of Des Moines; grandchildren, Lisa Galloway and her husband, Kevin, of Baxter, Andrew Jensen, of Tyler, Texas, Matthew Jensen, of Malcom, Craig Jensen and his wife, Anne, of Atlanta, Ga., Mark Jensen and his wife, Charmaine, of Largo, Fla., Curtis Jensen, of Madison, Wis., Darin Jensen, of Wausau, Wis., James Hillson, of Atlanta, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Thomas and Noah Galloway; brothers, Orville Lerwick and his wife, Ada, of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., Melvin Lerwick, and his wife, Margaret, of Lyman, Neb. Glenn Lerwick and his wife, Phyllis, of Albion, Wyo., and Harold Lerwick, of New Baltimore, Mich.; sisters, Mildred Morrison and her husband, Wade, of Cheyenne, Wyo., Dorothy Olson and her husband, Ray, of Twin Falls, Idaho; Esther Hopkins, of Cheyenne, Wyo. and several nieces and nephews.

LYLE H. HANSON

GREELEY, Colo. - Lyle H. Hanson, 81, of Greeley, Colo., formerly of Britt, Iowa, died Saturday (Sept. 25, 1999) at the Bonell Good Samaritan Center, Greeley, Colo.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, at the Adamson Memorial Downtown Chapel, 827 Fifth St., Greeley, Colo. 80631. Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Gardens, Greeley, Colo.

Visitation will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Downtown Chapel.

Lyle H. Hanson was born Feb. 22, 1918, in Britt, the son of W.A. and Rebecca (Nelson) Hanson.

Lyle was reared and educated in the Britt and Klemme, Iowa areas. He moved to Greeley in 1958. He worked for the Greeley School District No. 6 as a bus driver for 5 1/2 years. He then went into the trucking business, where he remained until he retired in 1993.

He was united in marriage to Ila Knox on May 29, 1959, in Greeley, Colo.

Survivors include his wife, Ila Hanson; son, Larry Hanson, of Jacksop, Ohio; daughter, Carol Ann Main, of Mesa, Ariz.; brothers, Arthur Hanson, of Cheyenne, Wyo., and John Hanson, of Klemme, Iowa; sisters, Evelyn LaVonne "Bonnie" Kimbel, of Clear Lake, Iowa; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Cecil Dean Hanson; and two brothers, Wilber Hanson and Marvin Hanson.

FLORAIN NELSON

SCARVILLE - Florain Nelson, 75, of Scarville, died on Friday (Sept. 24, 1999) near Vinje, Iowa, as of the result of an auto accident.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Bethany Lutheran Church, in Thompson, with Pastors Philip and Marilyn Peters officiating. Burial will be in St. Olaf Cemetery, in Belmond.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Winter Funeral Home, in Thompson, and one hour prior to services at the church.

HAROLD BRUNS

MASON CITY - Memorial services for Harold Bruns, 72, of Mason City will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Winter Funeral Home, in Buffalo Center, with the Rev. David Langer, of the First Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will be in Olena Mound Cemetery, Buffalo Center.

Harold Richard Bruns, son of William and Anna (Roth) Bruns was born Sept. 2, 1927, in Woden, Iowa. He was baptized in the Methodist Church and confirmed in the Presbyterian Church. In later years he attended the Congregational Church.

He graduated from Buffalo Center High School and then worked at the Penney Store in Mason City.

He enlisted in the Air Force on Jan. 12, 1951. He took his basic military training at Shepherds AFB in Texas. His stateside assignments included Lockbourne AFB, Ohio, Chandler AFM, Minn., Peterson Field, Colo., Fort Belvoir, Va., Andrews AFB, Md., Holloman AFB, N.M. and Mountain Home AFB, in Idaho. He had two tours of overseas assignments. The first tour was with NATO at Naples, Italy and the second tour was at Uhalsburg AFB, France. The majority of his military duties was in the personnel career field. While in the service he completed the following courses, Personnel School covering classification on the testing; an advanced Personnel school on the maintenance of computerized records and the NCO Academy. He retired from the U.S. Air Force on April 1, 1971, after completing 20 years of active military service.

Harold passed away on Saturday (Sept. 25, 1999), at the Sunbridge Nursing Home, in Mason City, at the age of 72.

He is survived by two brothers, Rodger Bruns, of Fertile and Merlyn and his wife, Leone Bruns, of Fort Dodge; two sisters, Myrna Christoffer, of Fort Dodge and Mildred Penning, of Kiester, Minn. and nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers, Donald, Marvin, Clarence and Kenneth.

CLARENCE J. 'JUNIOR' WARD

MASON CITY - Clarence J. "Junior" Ward, 65, of 708 17th St. S.E., Mason City, died Friday (Sept. 24, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, at the Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Memorials may be given to the Junior Ward Memorial Fund.

Junior was born Sept. 7, 1934 in Mason City, the son of Clarence N. and Ruby (Quandt) Ward. Junior attended school in Mason City.

Junior worked at numerous construction jobs in the Mason City area retiring in 1990 due to his health.

He married Katherine Boelman on Sept. 22, 1973 in Truman, Minn.

Junior was a member of the Iron Workers Union and enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, yard work and mechanics.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine, of Mason City; mother, Ruby Ward, of Mason City; daughter, Melody Harty and her husband, Tim, of Mason City; three sons, Terry Ward, of Mason City, Gary Ward and his wife, Denise, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Mathew Ward, of Mason City; one stepdaughter, Tracey Lorentzen, of Mason City; two brothers, James Ward and wife, Lyla, of Carbondale, Colo. and Charles Ward and his wife, Linda, of Welcome, N.C.; one sister, Dorothy Langhoff and her husband, Myron, of Mason City; grandchildren, Shane and Brandon Ward, Randy and Frank Ward, Stacy Harty, Matthew, Angel and Sean Ward; stepgrandchildren, Dylan and Mariah Collins; one great-granddaughter, Madelynn; and many nieces and nephews.

MARVIN JOHN DE LAWYER

MORENO VALLEY, Calif. - Marvin John De Lawyer, 62, formerly of Liscomb and Marshalltown, Iowa, died on Sunday (Sept. 12, 1999) at a Hospice Convalescent Center in San Bernadino, Calif., after a lengthy illness. His cremains and those of his wife Sharon will be returned here for burial.

LaSierra Memorial Chapel Mortuary of Riverside, Calif., was in charge of arrangements.

A joint graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, with inurnment in the Garden of Gethsemane at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, Marshalltown.

Marvin was born on Feb. 4, 1937, in rural Haverhill, to Ora George and Anna Catherine (Schoborg) De Lawyer. He received his formal and high school education in the Liscomb Consolidated School, graduating in 1955.

On Oct. 16, 1957, he married Sharon Lee Quirk in Marshalltown. Sharon died Jan. 14, 1990, in Pensacola, Fla., of cancer.

Marvin was employed by the Marshall County Milk Dealers for several years and Lyons Trucking before moving to warmer climates.

Survivors include two sons, Kevin L. and his wife Patricia of Moreno Valley, Calif., and Kenneth E., of Jacksonville, N.C.; a daughter, Kristi (Mrs. Todd) Thomas, of Pensacola, Fla.; two sisters, Lucille (Mrs. George) Feldhus of Mason City and Hazel Hollingworth of Eldora; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sharon; and a brother, Bernard, in 1985.

ELVIRA M. KITTLESON

ST. ANSGAR - Elvira M. Kittleson, 88, of St. Ansgar died on Friday (Sept. 24, 1999) at the Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, at the First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, 207 South School Street, St. Ansgar.

Elvira was born in Grafton, Iowa, on March 29, 1911, to William and Martha (Feldt) Lutz. As a young girl she moved to Otranto. She graduated from Otranto High School in 1928 and attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City . She worked as a bookkeeper in Mason City for several years.

In May of 1935, she married Claire Mueller. Four children were born to this union. Claire died in March of 1953. Elvira then worked for several years at the St. Ansgar State Bank.

She married Julius Kittleson in July of 1965. He died in December of 1984.

Elvira had lived at the Worth Living Center for over two years and more recently at the Good Samaritan Center.

She is survived by one son, William Mueller of Hopkins, Minn.; two daughters, Gretta Nickerson and her husband Jim of Marshfield, Wis., and Marie Teggatz and her husband Leonard of Latimer; one sister, Esther Groth, of Stacyville; one brother, Elmer Lutz of Mason City; one sister-in-law, Lola Kittleson of St. Ansgar; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Elvira was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, and one son, Stephen Mueller.

MELVIN O. BURSETH

KANAWHA - Melvin O. Burseth, 85, of Kanawha, formerly of Garner, died Friday morning (Sept. 24, 1999) at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, at the Salem Lutheran Church Chapel in Lake Mills with the Rev. Sara Beth Akre officiating. Burial will be at Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery in rural Lake Mills.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church chapel.

Melvin Oliver Burseth was born June 19, 1914, son of Oscar Theodore and Marie (Hagen) Burseth of Forest City. Melvin was baptized in the Lutheran faith and confirmed on June 30, 1929, by the Rev. John Granskou at Winnebago Lutheran Church.

He had broken his hip in December of 1998 and had been in failing health since.

Previous to going to Kanawha, he was a resident at Duncan Heights west of Garner. While a resident there, he married Dorothy Marie Burnett on Sept. 15, 1990, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner.

Before entering Duncan Heights, he worked as a farmhand for Clifford and Agnes Larson near Miller. Earlier in life he spent farming with his parents in the Joice, Forest City and Leland areas.

Melvin was very interested in animals and loved music and gardening.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy of Britt; two brothers, Vernon and his wife, Rose Marie Burseth, of Hartland, Wis., and Orville Ordean Burseth of Holiday, Fla.; two sisters, Doris Stengel of Emmetsburg and Bonnie and her husband, Sterling Sanden, of Lake Mills; along with many nieces and nephews.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Emery Burseth, in 1961; one sister, Irene Pletcher, of Dodge Center, Minn., in 1992; and one brother-in-law, Leonard Pletcher, of Dodge Center, Minn., in 1997.

Blessed be his memory. He will be remembered as a kind and giving man, willing to help friends and neighbors. "Be Thou faithful unto death and I will give Thee a crown of life." Rev. 2:10. (Melvin's confirmation verse).

RUSSELL SYLVIN SORENSON

BRITT - Russell Sylvin Sorenson, 79, of Britt, formerly of Crystal Lake, passed away Sunday (Sept. 26, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake, with Pastor Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be at the Crystal Lake Cemetery in Crystal Lake.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Ewing Funeral Home in Britt, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Russell, the son of Edmund and Emilie (Mortensen) Sorenson, was born April 21, 1920, on the family farm near Crystal Lake. He attended school in the Crystal Lake area and graduated from Crystal Lake High School.

Russell was united in marriage with Marjorie Bell on July 10, 1945, at Thompson. He farmed and lived on the family farm most of his life. Russell was later employed at Winnebago Industries in Forest City.

Russell enjoyed his family, fishing, traveling, woodworking and reading. Russell was baptized and a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake. He served on the Crystal Lake Creamery Board for a number of years.

Russell is survived by his wife, Marjorie, of Britt; five children, Janet Federer and her husband, James, of Cedar Rapids, Linda Barnes and her husband, Dennis, of Britt, Richard Sorenson and his wife, Carol, of Riverton, Wyo., Marcia Gerdes and her husband, Robert, of Woden, and Diane Schulz and her husband, Don, of Hudson; 12 grandchildren, Teresa, Erik and Joel Federer, Jason and Jeremy Barnes, Joshua and Matthew Sorenson, Angela Gerdes, Robert Gerdes Jr. and his wife, Angela, and Jill Gerdes, and JoDee and Megan Schulz; stepmother, Mildred Sorenson, of Crystal Lake; brothers, Morris Sorenson and his wife, Wilma, of Winthrop, Maine and Kenneth Sorenson and his wife, Leona, of Crystal Lake; sisters, Lois Otis, of Forest City, Doryce Hanna and her husband, Bruce, of Woden, Dorothy Brown and her husband, Gary, of Corwith, Paulette Dahle and her husband, Ronald, of Woden, and Elizabeth Barnum and her husband, Edward, of Blaine, Minn.; brothers-in-law, Herbert Schubert, of Garner, and LaVern Holtorf and his wife, Jane, of Ankeny; sister-in-law, Genevieve Sorenson, of Forest City; and many nieces and nephews.

BONNITA V. NELSON

KANAWHA - Bonnita V. Nelson, 93, passed away Saturday (Sept. 25, 1999) at the Kanawha Community Home in Kanawha.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Kanawha, with Pastor Susan Detwiler officiating. Burial will be at Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha.

Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Kanawha and one hour prior to services at the church.

Bonnita, the daughter of George and Violet Raver Morgan, was born July 17, 1906, in Grand Junction. At an early age, she moved to Britt, where she attended school. Bonnita graduated from Britt High School in 1925 and then attended the Iowa State Teachers College for two years. She taught school in Bayard, Corwith and Kanawha.

Bonnita was united in marriage with Archie Nelson on Sept. 29, 1933, at Galena, Ill. The couple made their home in Kanawha. Bonnita continued to teach until the birth of their son and was a devoted housewife and mother. She taught special needs children in the 1960s. Bonnita resided in Kanawha her entire married life, entering the Kanawha Community Home in 1997.

Bonnita enjoyed crafts and painting and was an excellent artist. She helped many years with the Kanawha Labor Day Celebration, directing the event in 1950. She participated in various bridge circles. Bonnita was a member of the United Methodist Church of Kanawha.

Survivors include her son, Donald Nelson, of West Des Moines; and three grandchildren, Nancy Fischer and her husband, Leon, of West Des Moines, Julie Williamson and her husband, Kevin, of Windsor Heights, and Rebecca Nelson, of Des Moines; eight great-grandchildren, Jessica, Jennifer, Jamie, Ashley, Brandon, Nicholas, Katy and Issac.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Archie; grandson, Michael Nelson; one sister, Erma Morgan; and one brother, Dr. H.R. Morgan.

CHARLES CITY - Lynn F. Wetherell, 79, of 707 Fifth Ave., died Monday (Sept. 27, 1999) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City, officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, south of Charles City, with a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, with the family greeting friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home.

GAIL LYNNE VOSBURGH

CHARLES CITY - Gail Lynne Vosburgh, 51, of 210 Ninth Ave., Charles City, died Friday (Sept. 24, 1999) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Ron Stein of the First Baptist Church of Mason City officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory and on Wednesday prior to services at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to the Gail Vosburgh Memorial Fund.

Gail Lynne Vosburgh was born Sept. 19, 1948, the daughter of Eldon Sidney Sr. and Wanda Marie (Hennick) Scott, in Rockford, Ill.

Gail married Martin Laverne Vosburgh and they had three children.

For the last several years, Gail worked at Comprehensive Systems in Charles City, where she worked with the residents and served as a cook.

The joy of her life was her grandkids and she spent as much time with them as she could. Her family includes son, Patrick Dean Vosburgh, of Mason City, and his children, Christopher John, Porscha Renee, Amber Mae Lynne and Malina Saige; son, Merle Lee Vosburgh and wife, Kristin Lee, of Mason City, and their children, Reva Sue, Harley Joann, Jesse Laverne and Joseph Dean; daughter, Tabitha Jane Vosburgh and husband, Scott Crail, of Rudd, and their daughter, Autumn Gail Crail; brothers, Eldon Jr. (Skip) Scott and wife, Joyce, of Texas, Robert Scott and wife, Mindy, of Lone Tree, Jim Scott and wife, Judy, of Nichols, and Kirk Scott and wife, Theresa, of Marion; grandmother, Golda Hennick, of Floyd; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

SHEFFIELD - Anna Helene DeVries, 89, of Sheffield, died Monday (Sept. 27, 1999) at the Sheffield Care Center.

BONNITA V. NELSON

KANAWHA - Bonnita V. Nelson, 93, passed away Saturday (Sept. 25, 1999) at the Kanawha Community Home in Kanawha.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Kanawha, with Pastor Susan Detwiler officiating. Burial will be at Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha.

Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Kanawha and one hour prior to services at the church.

Bonnita, the daughter of George and Violet Raver Morgan, was born July 17, 1906, in Grand Junction. At an early age, she moved to Britt, where she attended school. Bonnita graduated from Britt High School in 1925 and then attended the Iowa State Teachers College for two years. She taught school in Bayard, Corwith and Kanawha.

Bonnita was united in marriage with Archie Nelson on Sept. 29, 1933, at Galena, Ill. The couple made their home in Kanawha. Bonnita continued to teach until the birth of their son and was a devoted housewife and mother. She taught special needs children in the 1960s. Bonnita resided in Kanawha her entire married life, entering the Kanawha Community Home in 1997.

Bonnita enjoyed crafts and painting and was an excellent artist. She helped many years with the Kanawha Labor Day Celebration, directing the event in 1950. She participated in various bridge circles. Bonnita was a member of the United Methodist Church of Kanawha.

Survivors include her son, Donald Nelson and his wife, Sue, of West Des Moines; and three grandchildren, Nancy Fischer and her husband, Leon, of West Des Moines, Julie Williamson and her husband, Kevin, of Windsor Heights, and Rebecca Nelson, of Des Moines; eight great-grandchildren, Jessica, Jennifer, Jamie, Ashley, Brandon, Nicholas, Katy and Issac.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Archie; grandson, Michael Nelson; one sister, Erma Morgan; and one brother, Dr. H.R. Morgan.

MASON CITY - Earl V. Blakley Jr., 75, of 1621 Seventh Place S.W., died Tuesday (Sept. 28, 1999) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson officiating.

Private family graveside services will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery with full rites by the Mason City Veteran's Memorial Association.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. His body was cremated at his request.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa or St. James Lutheran Church, in his memory.

Earl V. Blakley Jr. was born in rural Hancock County, Jan. 20, 1924 the son of Earl V. Sr. and Anna L. (Evans) Blakley. He attended and graduated from Titonka High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946. After his service during World War II he returned to Iowa and made his home in Clear Lake where he worked as an electrician. On June 22, 1946, he married Eva Mae Gee in Corwith, Iowa. She passed away in 1973.

Earl started farming with his father south of Clear Lake in 1951. On Nov. 22, 1974, he married Beatrice B. deBuhr at St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City. They made their home in Mason City. Earl then returned to electrical work as the Maintenance Manager for Holiday Inn in Mason City for several years. He also worked as an electrician for other firms in Mason City, retiring in 1996.

Earl loved traveling, playing golf, fishing, hunting and woodworking. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and the V.F.W.

His family includes his wife Bea of Mason City; daughters, Sharon Springer and husband Dennis of Clear Lake and Sheryl Pietsch and husband Rory of Rush City, Minn.; stepdaughters, Julie Monday, of Mason City, Scott Marrs and wife Janet of Apple Valley, Minn. and Craig Marrs and wife Beth of Ames; grandchildren, Leslie Monday, Lindsey Monday, LaShea Springer, Jason, Ryan and Emily Scott; sister, Pauling Walls, of Rockford, Ill.; and mother-in-law, Marjorie deBuhr, of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Lynn in infancy and first wife, Eva.

PAUL L. WHITCOMB

MANLY - Paul L. Whitcomb, 53, of Manly, died Wednesday (Sept. 29, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating. Inurnment will be in the Manly Cemetery. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the chapel.

The family of Paul L. Whitcomb has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Paul L. Whitcomb memorial fund in his memory.

Paul L. Whitcomb was born on April 10, 1946, in Albert Lea, Minn., the son of Roy H. and Mary E. (Connors) Whitcomb. He was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at St. Theodore's Catholic Church in Albert Lea, Minn.

He attended and received his education in the St. Mary's Catholic Schools; graduating from Albert Lea High School in 1964. He also attended Mankato State College and Mankato Commercial College in Mankato. After completing his schooling, he worked for Albert Lea Medical & Surgical Center as their credit manager.

He was united in marriage to Linda Mead on Aug. 30, 1968, at St. Theodore's Catholic Church in Albert Lea, Minn. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Mason City, working for A.C. Nielsen Ratings Company as a computer operator. He also was a salesman for several years for Frozen Foods Plus (which is now called Martin Bros.) in Mason City, ran the news agency in Albert Lea for the Minneapolis Star Tribune, delivered the Mason City Globe-Gazette newspaper, and helped out at Don LaFrenz Ford Dealership in Mason City. When he was unable to work, he volunteered to go into the schools and talk about tobacco use and its consequences. He also enjoyed talking to young people.

He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, camping and collecting pens, but his great love and enjoyment was spending time with his immediate family and extended family, and arranging family campouts and swim parties.

He attended Mass at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. He was chairman for Railroad Ag Days when it first started in Manly, was a Manly Volunteer Fireman for several years, EMT training until his first surgery, started "New Way" Larengectomee support group and was a volunteer coordinator for "Road to Recovery" for the American Cancer Society.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Linda J. Whitcomb, of Manly; a son, Mark A. Whitcomb, of Manly; a daughter, Julie D. Whitcomb, of Mason City; a brother, Donald Whitcomb and his wife Margaret of Willmar, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Cathie Whitcomb, of Bloomington, Minn.; several nieces and nephews and their families which include, Tim Whitcomb and his wife Lisa and their children, Robert and Katie, of Shakopee, Minn., Betsy Laurent and her husband Randy and their children, Jessica and Janelle, of Shakopee, Minn., Anne Sowers and her husband Dale and their children, B.J., Jason, Chris and Stephanie of North Richland Hills, Texas, Jim Whitcomb and his wife Floria and their children, Phillip, Natalie and Steven, of Tokyo, Japan, David Whitcomb and his wife Kris and their son Jackson of West Minster, Colo., and Tom Whitcomb and his wife Marcia and their daughter Skylar of Hutchinson, Minn.; an uncle, James Connors and his wife Mavis and their daughter Connie of St. Bonifacius, Minn.; as well as other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, J. Thomas Whitcomb; two nephews, Steve and Danny Whitcomb; as well as cousins, aunts and uncles.

CHARLES CITY - Clifford F. Maulsby Jr., 74, of 500 Hulin Street, Charles City, died unexpectedly Tuesday (Sept. 28, 1999) at his residence.

Funeral services for Cliff Maulsby will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City, officiating. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Clifford Francis Maulsby was born March 9, 1925, in Charles City, the son of Clifford Winton and Lida (Weiner) Maulsby. On Dec. 31, 1944, in Charles City, he was united in marriage to Doris Gail Dodge. She died June 4, 1966, in Bethany, Mo., from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

On Feb. 10, 1968, in Blooming Prairie, Minn., he was united in marriage to Sharon K. Mooberry. She preceded him in death on Jan. 27, 1992, in Charles City.

Mr. Maulsby attended school in Charles City and went on to welder's school, in Minneapolis, Minn. For 25 years he was a welder and foreman at Hydro-Tile in Nashua. He retired from Hydro-Tile in 1988. Following his retirement, he went to work part time, first as a parts deliverer for NAPA Auto Parts and Power Pro, and later as a driver for his son's automobile dealership.

He was formerly a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #1011, of Charles City. He enjoyed bowling and belonged to both a men's league and a mixed league. He often found time to play a favorite game of Solitaire. Cliff enjoyed socializing with his buddies, and loved to play the part of the "devil's advocate," rooting for the team that no one else was rooting for. He loved that part unless it was a ballgame with the New York Yankee's, to which he remained a very loyal fan.

Those thankful for sharing Cliff's life include his children, Michael Maulsby and wife Janice of Mason City; Patricia Stephenson and husband James of Ames, Thomas Maulsby and wife Linda of Clear Lake, Theresa Scharnhorst, of Oelwein, Tammy Mowrer and husband Mark of Robbins, and Thomas "T.J." Maulsby and wife Kris of Hudson, Wis.; two sisters, Laura Ortman and her husband Robert of Charles City, and Anna Britt, of Ames; 14 great-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; both of his wives; a brother, Klaus Maulsby; and two sisters, Pearl Fredericks and Lucille McKenzie.
