EVELYN FLORENCE (BARNETT) HARMAN

DES MOINES - Evelyn Florence (Barnett) Harman, 90, of 600 E. Fifth St., formerly of Mason City, died Sunday (Sept. 19, 1999) at Heather Manor in Des Moines.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Heather Manor, Des Moines, with Dr. Kenneth H. Ahntholz officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Oakwood Cemetery, in Plymouth, with the Rev. Debra Stowers officiating.

Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St., Des Moines, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the Heather Manor Friendship Fund.

Evelyn Florence Barnett Harman was born May 25, 1909, in Cumberland, daughter of Reu Lee and Florence Evelyn (Cady) Barnett.

She had lived in Des Moines since 1980. She had spent most of her life in Mason City. She was a school teacher, then gave private organ and piano instructions. She was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church. She belonged to the PEO Chapter KT in Des Moines.

Evelyn is survived by one sister, Doris Moore, of Newton; and two nieces.

RUBY G. BOHNSACK

ROCKFORD - Ruby G. Bohnsack, 87, formerly of 501 W. Main St., Rockford, died Sunday (Sept. 19, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church, Rockford, with the Rev. Rosemary Rohde-Frank officiating. Inurnment will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to direct memorials to the First United Methodist Church of Rockford or the Rockford Public Library in Ruby's name.

Ruby was born Jan. 30, 1912, the daughter of John Thomas and Frances (Theobald) Fenton in Onawa. Ruby later graduated from Mason City Junior College and Wartburg College.

On July 11, 1942, Ruby was united in marriage to Raymond Bohnsack in Abilene, Texas.

Ruby began her teaching career in the Cerro Gordo and Floyd county rural schools before teaching at the Rockford elementary. Ruby enjoyed volunteering her time at the Senior Center and with different church functions. In her spare time, Ruby enjoyed crafts, gardening and her cats.

Ruby was a member of the Rockford Library Board as secretary/treasurer for many years. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Rockford.

Those thankful for having shared Ruby's life include two nieces, Mrs. John (Carmen) Tourville, of Green Bay, Wis., J.L. (Nada) Reuss, of Haines City, Fla.; two nephews, Jack and his wife, Nancy Fenton, of Hancock, Mich.; and Fred Fenton, of Littleton, Colo.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond, in January of 1984; three brothers, Claude, Leo and Harry Fenton; one niece, Judith Fenton Boman; and one nephew, Harry Fenton.

DORIS KAY SEIFERT

JOICE - Doris Kay Seifert, 63, of Joice, died Monday (Sept. 20, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice, with the Rev. Gary Johnson officiating. Burial will take place at Madison Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.Doris Kay Seifert was born on Dec. 7, 1935, at Cambridge, the daughter of Martin Emo and Marguerite Olive (Johnson) Christensen. She graduated from Lake Mills High School and later received a bachelor's degree in computer programming.

Doris was united in marriage to Wayne Edwin Seifert on March 14, 1958, in Blue Earth, Minn. They moved to Joice in 1982. Wayne passed away in May of 1985.

Doris worked at Winnebago Industries in Forest City as a computer programmer for 12 years. She was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church. She enjoyed quilting and gardening, but family was most important to her, she was referred to as "the laces that held our shoe (family) together."

She is survived by her mother, Marguerite Christensen, of Lake Mills; her sister, JoAnn Arndt, of Joice; her brother, Jerry and his wife, Janet Christensen, of Shueyville; her five children, Marti and her husband, Darwin Lee, of Lake Mills, James and his wife, Darla Seifert, of Big Fork, Minn., David and his wife, Renae Seifert, of Austin, Minn., Mark and his wife, Mary Seifert, of Juliette, Ga., and Paul and his wife, Christie Seifert, of Jackson, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; along with many nieces and nephews.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband in 1985; and her father in 1986.

BEVERLY L. MCDONALD

GREENE - An offering of the traditional Latin Mass for Beverly L. McDonald, 60, of 103 N. High, Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene, with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, where the Joyful Mysteries of the Holy Rosary will be recited by the Third Order of Lay Carmelites at 3:30 p.m.; the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Holy Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. and the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary at 7 p.m. followed by the Glorious Mysteries of the Holy Rosary.

Beverly Louise Armstrong was born June 19, 1939, at Burr Oak, the second child of Raymond Lee and Mae Frances (Hanlon) Armstrong, and died Sunday (Sept. 19, 1999) at her home in Greene.

She received her education in the rural and public schools in Canton, Minn., and graduated from Canton High School in 1958. She was a graduate of the Paris Beauty College in Cedar Rapids and was employed as a beauty operator before going to California.

On Feb. 9, 1963, she was united in marriage to John A. "Jack" McDonald at St. Anthony's Church in Long Beach. They lived in California for six months before moving to Center Junction, where she operated a beauty shop there. In 1969, they moved to Cresco and later to Elma before moving to Greene in 1973.

She worked outside the home doing domestic cleaning and helping with personal care of people in the Greene area. Beverly graduated from NIACC in 1991. She participated in the Hospice Volunteer program from 1993 to 1995 and became a part of the program in February of 1999. She couldn't say enough good about the Hospice Program and the people in it.

Her interests included flower gardening, refinishing and redecorating her home. Beverly enjoyed living in a small town and its warm and friendly people.

Beverly made the Total Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on Dec. 8, 1992, and was received by the Lay Carmelite Order in August of 1993, in which she was still a member.

Living family members include her husband, John A. "Jack" McDonald, of Greene; two daughters and their spouses, Shawn and Boyd Barth, of Grand Blanc, Mich., and Stacie and Joe Breitbach, of Monticello; three sons, J.C. McDonald, of Des Moines, Jamie and his wife, Melanie McDonald, of Cedar Rapids, and Joe McDonald, of Greene; five grandchildren, Alysa and Reanna Barth, Zachary and Danielle McDonald and Clint Breitbach; her mother, Mae Armstrong, of Rochester; two sisters, Rowene and her husband, Robert DeFang, of Rochester, and Dorothy Armstrong, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; two brothers and their spouses, Leo and Sharyn Armstrong, of Dexter, N.M., and Francis and Linda Armstrong, of Oronoco, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Raymond Lee Armstrong, on Nov. 9, 1985.

KENNETH E. GUTTERMAN

MASON CITY - Kenneth E. Gutterman, 73, of 116 16th St. S.E., died Sunday (Sept. 19, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Nils "Chris" Hellevik officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with full military rites by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be given to KCMR Radio or Hospice of North Iowa.

Ken was born May 19, 1926, in Mason City, the son of Verner and Alma (Maass) Gutterman. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1944. Ken served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he received the Bronze Star for the Battle of the Bulge. Ken was discharged in 1946, attained his pilot license in 1947 and graduated from Hamilton Business College in 1949.

Ken worked at International Harvester as an accountant for 17 years in Mason City and for Iowa Kemper Insurance Company as an adjuster for two years in Cedar Rapids. He owned and operated Lock Photography from 1969 to 1980. Ken then worked out of his home as a professional photographer, operating Ken Gutterman Photo until 1997. He worked as a custodian at John Adams Middle School from 1982-1995.

He married Evelyn Rasmussen on Sept. 25, 1971, at Clear Lake.

Ken was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he ushered for many years. He was a former member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he was treasurer for 21 years. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., American Legion, Kiwanis Club, Professional Photography Association, Danish Brotherhood Lodge, where he served as district treasurer, Hawkeye Camera Club and KCMR volunteer since 1979. He also enjoyed visiting his daughters in Arizona and Washington.

Ken is survived by his wife, Evelyn, of Mason City; two daughters, Kay Gutterman, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Kim Gutterman, of Seattle, Wash.; one brother, Vernon Gutterman and his wife, Lois, of Miami, Fla.; one niece, Vicki Mears and her husband, Tony, of Miami, Fla.; one nephew, Scott Gutterman, of Miami, Fla.; one great-niece, Abby Mears, of Miami, Fla.; and several cousins.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Phyllis, in 1946.

MATHILDE "TILLIE" BRUMMUND

KANAWHA - Mathilde "Tillie" Brummund, 88, of Kanawha, died Monday (Sept. 20, 1999) at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Kanawha United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Susan Detwiler officiating. Burial will take place in Amsterdam Cemetery, Kanawha.

There will be no visitation. The family will greet friends after the funeral services on Thursday.

Tillie was born July 12, 1911, at Cleaves, Iowa, the daughter of Sam and Anna (Hendricks) Janssen. She graduated from Ackley High School in 1928. She was a graduate of Coe College of Cedar Rapids in 1932. She taught in the Kanawha Community Schools.

She was united in marriage to John Brummund on June 1, 1939. They made their home in Kanawha. As a couple they participated in many community activities. They were involved with Youth Activity Day. They were instrumental in establishing the Pony Express Ride in North Central Iowa for Camp Sunnyside. Tillie and her husband coined the phrase, "We ride that crippled children can walk," dedicated to the memory of their grandson, Bobby Swyter.

She was a member of the Kanawha United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, the PTA and a Band Booster. She belonged to the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority at Coe College.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara and her husband, Gary Swyter, of San Dimas, Calif. and their daughter, Elizabeth and her husband, Gary Souza and their children Nicholas, Kelly, and Garrett; and their son, Steve Swyter and his wife, Wendy; a daughter, Mary and her husband, Ron De Lerenzo, of Cochran, Ga. and their two daughters, Joy and her husband, David Stanley, and Amy De Lerenzo; a sister, Lillian Thompson, of Mountain Home, Ark.; a sister-in-law, Mildred Holloway, of Kanawha; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John; and a grandson, Robert Swyter; and a brother, Henry.

MASON CITY - David F.H. Meyer Sr., 83, of Mason City, died Tuesday (Sept. 21, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the West Prairie Lutheran Church, in Leland, with the Rev. Dan Christensen officiating. Burial will be in the West Prairie Lutheran Cemetery.

David F.H. Meyer Sr. was born in Garner, on Nov. 27, 1915, the son of Henry and Mary (Bonar) Meyer. He attended school in Leland. On Jan. 18, 1940, he was married to Anna Elston.

The couple made their home on the family farm, working with other members of David's family. The couple retired from farming in 1981 and moved into Leland. They later moved to Mason City in 1995.

David loved raising and breeding horses. He was an avid collector and enjoyed fishing. Spending time with his family was very important to him.

David is survived by his wife, Anna Meyer, of Mason City; four children, David Meyer Jr., of Waco, Texas, Ella McNeely, of Mason City, Phyllis Hohenfield, of Clinton and Donna Herndon, of Des Moines; 13 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Melvin; two sisters, Dorothy and Mary; a daughter, Shirley Ann meyer; and two granddaughters, Shirley Murphy and Jeanine Meyer.

LORI ANN KRULL

OSAGE - Lori Ann Krull, 39, of Osage died Wednesday (Sept. 22, 1999) at home following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Mitchell, with the Rev. Rose Marie Nack officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Lori was born Sept. 6, 1960, in Osage, the daughter of Lowell and Karen (Kindschuh) Maakestad. Lori was educated at schools in Osage and Clarksville, and graduated from Syracuse High School in Syracuse, Neb. She attended Horticulture School at Hawkeye Tech. Community College in Waterloo.

Lori married John H. Krull on Oct. 30, 1981, at Allison. They moved to the Osage area in 1990. Lori was employed at Fox River Mills. She enjoyed tending flowers and plants in her yard and home, along with collecting antiques.

Survivors include her husband, John H. Krull, of Osage; two daughters, Cody Lenz and her husband Nick of Fort Hood, Texas and Cheyenne Rose Krull, at home; one son, Lucas Krull, at home; mother, Karen Maakestad, of Clarksville; and paternal grandmother, Josie Maakestad, of Stacyville.

She was preceded in death by her father, Lowell Maakestad in 1988; grandfather, Leonard Maakestad; grandparents, Margaret and Louie Kindschuh.

REX L. REYNOLDS

MASON CITY - Rex L. Reynolds, 57, died Sept. 2, 1999, at his home in Ypsilanti, Mich., after a long illness.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave., Mason City. Rex's niece, Jennifer Grant, a senior student at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., will officiate. Burial will be in Rock Grove Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Memorials may be given to the Rex Reynolds Memorial Fund in care of Howard Reynolds, 321 23rd St. S.W., Mason City.

Rex attended Mason City schools. After high school he worked at various restaurants as a cook until he moved to Michigan.

He was united in marriage on April 25, 1985, to Connie Gilliam in Ann Arbor, Mich. They lived in Ypsilanti and Rex worked first as a cook at the Red Lobster and then drove cab for many years until his illness forced him to quit working.

Rex enjoyed watching sporting events, especially the Detroit Tigers and Lions, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He loved children, especially his nieces and nephews when they were young and Ronald and Ryan, and he will be greatly missed by all of them.

He is survived by his wife Connie of Ypsilanti, Mich.; his sons, Ryan and Ronald, at home; his brother Howard (Skip) and his wife Shirley; his sisters, Marilyn and her husband Carroll (Nort) Norcross, Ardith and her husband Roger Christian, Nancy Haag and Kathy and her husband Robert Grant, all of Mason City; his mother-in-law Geraldine Gilliam of Ypsilanti; and his many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, H.A. and Lola Reynolds; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Old Stone United Methodist Church, Rock Falls, with the Rev. Richard Pippert and the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery.

Delita was born May 26, 1905, in Nora Springs, the daughter of George and Luella (McKee) Brodrecht. She attended country school.

Delita was married to Clarence "Connie" Kendrew on June 18, 1927, at Plymouth. They moved to Rock Falls in 1934.

She was an avid sewer and enjoyed playing the piano and organ for her own enjoyment.

She was a member of the Old Stone United Methodist Church and UMW of Rock Falls, and Royal Neighbors of America.

She is survived by one son, Harold Kendrew and his wife Nancy of Rock Falls; grandson, Craig Kendrew and his wife Susan of rural Rock Falls; granddaughter, Pamela Kendrew, of Crawford, Colo.; great-granddaughters, Bridget and Nicole Kendrew of rural Rock Falls; sister, Melva Butts and her husband Newell of Waterloo; one nephew and several nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1978; a brother, Harold; and a sister, Marvel Hanson.

CLEAR LAKE - Mrs. Alta Ada Bunting, 88, of 2310 First Ave. S., died Monday (Sept. 20, 1999) at her home.

Alta was married to Leonard F. Davis in 1927; she later married Arvin Bunting on Dec. 22, 1949, in Kirksville, Mo.

Alta enjoyed going to Minnesota fishing, camping, gardening, reading, cooking and was known for her apple pies. She was devoted to her family.

Alta is survived by five children, Dean D. Davis and his wife Carlene of Mason City, Duane L. Davis and his wife Diane of Clear Lake, Dennis J. Davis of Clear Lake, Ruth A. Young and her husband Brian of Plainview, Minn., and Joan K. Davey and her husband Ralph of Manly; 12 grandchildren, Jeffrey Davis, Michelle Christensen and her husband Rob, Clayton Davis, Christine Marchesano and her husband Robby, Mark Davis, Jason Davis, Brian Young and his wife Rachel, Brent Young, Brenda Magnuson and her husband Shawn, Aaron Young, Renee Davey and Alex Davey; and seven great-grandchildren, Dylan Davis, Dain Christensen, Laurel Christensen, Paige Christensen, Ashley Faye Marchesano, Rebecca Magnuson and Katherine Young.

GORDON HARLAN HOUCK

MASON CITY - Gordon Harlan Houck died Friday (Sept. 17, 1999) at Good Shepherd Health Care Center, Mason City, of congestive heart failure after a two-year illness, following a stroke at Des Moines General Hospital during an angiogram procedure in April 1997.

Gordon Houck was born at Carbon, Iowa, to Homer Houck and Lillian Hardisty Houck July 10, 1910, and grew up on a Corning area farm and graduated from high school in that community.

Gordon Houck graduated from the University of Iowa College of Engineering as a mechanical engineer.

He married Thelma L. Tanner, a University of Iowa graduate nurse from Ladora, Iowa. His professional career was spent with John Deere Tractor Works as a mechanical design engineer, where he acquired several patents, many of which are still in use today. His avocation was aviation and he continued to be an active pilot until the time of his stroke at age 87.

He was a member of Triangle Engineering Fraternity at Iowa City, John Deere Supervisors Club, Masons, Elks, Sunny Side Country Club and the Congregational Church, all of Waterloo.

He is survived by a son, pharmacist Garvis G. Houck and his wife, Marilyn, of Mason City; a brother, Claude A. Houck and his wife, Lorraine, of Palm Springs, Calif.; three granddaughters, Leigh Ann Houck O'Neil and her husband, William, of St. Louis, Jill Rae Houck of Houston, and pharmacist Hillary Houck Lunning and husband, Michael, of Mason City; and three great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Gregory O'Neil and Lauren Elizabeth Lunning.

Committal services are scheduled for 3 p.m. on Oct 9 at the chapel at Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery.

KANAWHA - Pauline Baker, 79, passed away Wednesday (Sept. 22, 1999) at Kanawha Community Home in Kanawha.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at Wright Christian Reformed Church, southwest of Kanawha, with Pastor G. David Daley officiating. Burial will be at Wright Christian Reformed Church Cemetery rural Kanawha.

Pauline, the daughter of Peter and Jennie Siemens Eekhoff, was born Feb. 28, 1920, in Wellsburg, Iowa. She attended school in the Wellsburg area and graduated from Steamboat Rock High School.

Following graduation, Pauline was employed for a short time at the Hardin County Treasurer's office.

Pauline was united in marriage with Anco Baker on March 26, 1941, at the home of her parents in Wellsburg. The couple made their home on a farm southwest of Kanawha until 1992, when they moved into Kanawha. Among Pauline's many talents were writing poetry, gardening and sewing. She loved music and enjoyed singing in a community choir and in other small groups.

Pauline was a member of the Wright Christian Reformed Church and was active in many ladies organizations, where she willingly served as head of various groups and committees. Above all, Pauline was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband, Anco; six children, Donald Baker and his wife, Mim, of Cedar Falls, Arnold Baker and his wife, Karen, of Newaygo, Mich., Duane Baker and his wife, Debbie, of Chatsworth, Ga., Norman Baker and his wife, Joyce, of Denver, Phyllis Nuehring and her husband, Marvin, of Kanawha, and Marvin Baker and his wife, Beverly, of Janesville, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Elizabeth Eekhoff of Wellsburg.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Edward.

BLEMOND - Agnes G. Roberts, 98, passed away Tuesday (Sept. 21, 1999) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

Agnes, the daughter of C. L. and Beate Olson Kinseth, was born Aug. 15, 1909, near Bode, in Humboldt County. She grew up and attended school in Bode.

After graduating from Bode High School in 1919, Agnes went to California and lived with relatives. She later returned to Iowa and worked for Andy Brodall at a restaurant in Latimer. It was there that she met Ralph Roberts. Agnes was united in marriage with Ralph Roberts on April 6, 1929, in Bode.

The couple made their home in Goodell and later Belmond, where they owned and operated the Case Hotel and Yellow Front Restaurant. They then owned and operated the Duck Inn Café in Goodell. They retired from the hotel and restaurant business in 1972.

After Ralph passed away in 1976, Agnes continued to live in her home in Belmond. She would later move into a condominium at the Belmond Apartments in the late '70s and entered the Belmond Health Care Center in 1991.

Agnes is fondly remembered for her pie baking, having baked well over 5,000 pies. She loved to cook. Agnes was kind to everyone and had many friends. Agnes was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond for nearly 70 years.

Agnes is survived by two sisters-in-law, Loretta Rodemeyer of Pharr, Texas, and Mildred Oliver and her husband, Wayne, of Des Moines; brother-in-law, Milo Roberts and his wife, Sophie, of Belmond; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph; three brothers; and eight sisters.

Emma enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She was a longtime member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City, and a past member of a women's circle.

She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Zeller and her husband, Don, of Watseka, Ill. and Lorene Timm, of Las Vegas; one daughter-in-law, Margie Schmitt, of Paradise, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 329 E. State St., with the Rev. Randy Nielsen, chaplain of Good Shepherd, officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with full military rites by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Richard was born on April 10, 1919, on a farm northwest of Manly, the son of Leslie Earl and Elizabeth (Evans) Clausen. At age 3, he moved with his parents to Mason City, where he graduated from Mason City High School with the Class of 1937.

In 1940, he joined the National Guard and was inducted into the Army in 1941. He received his training in Claiborne, La., with the 34th Division. This division then went to Ireland, England, North Africa and finally, Italy. In May 1945, he was honorably discharged.

He managed the parts department for Farm Equipment and Supply, and in 1949, he worked for Harold Motors also in the parts department. In 1950, he bought a truck and began long-distance trucking until beginning work for State Brand Creamery in 1957. In 1962, he began working for Ellsworth Trucking. He retired in 1983.

On Jan. 18, 1953, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Alice Kobernusz. To this union was born three children. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, a life member of the San Juan Marne VFW Post No. 733, and Mason City Moose Lodge No. 1328.

He enjoyed bowling very much, pitching horseshoes, watching Viking football and baseball on TV, fishing at Clear Lake and in Minnesota, dancing at the VFW and spending time with his grandchildren.

Those thankful for sharing Dick's life include his daughter, Paula and her husband, George Grouette, of San Marcos, Texas; his son, Kevin and his wife, Deanna Clausen, of Mason City; seven grandchildren, Krista, Rachel, and Melissa Clausen, Michael, Jeremy and Krystal Grouette, and Faith Lohr: three great-grandchildren, Michael J. Grouette, Renee and Nathan Harris; three sisters, Ida Mary Sullivan, of Chicago, Evelyn Clausen, of Mason City, and Betty Jennings, of New Jersey; one brother, Dean and his wife, Darlene Clausen, of Mason City; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Janet Deets, of Mason City.

Born on July 27, 1928, in Rochester, Minn., to Louis and Helen (Young) Bennett, James LeRoy Bennett moved to Mason City, Iowa at a young age where he lived until joining the U.S. Navy in 1945. After serving more than eight years, including the period during the Korean Conflict, he returned to Rochester in 1952. His work there included more than 18 years with IBM in the area of Production Control, with part time efforts in small farming, serving as a special sheriff's deputy in Dodge and Olmstead counties and as a member of the Rochester Police Reserve.

Activities with law enforcement encouraged him to become a successful and award winning member of the Sheriff's Pistol Teams. That also provided the opportunity to teach gun safety to young people and CPR/emergency assistance to IBM co-workers.

A move to the San Francisco area put him to work in the shipyards, where he remained for over eight years, returning to Rochester upon the serious illness of his parents in 1989. He moved to Mason City in 1992 after living in Arizona for a short time.

Jim had been active in several organizations including the American Legion, serving as Commander of the Eyota Post. For the past several years he had held dual Masonic memberships in Hiram Lodge No. 83 of Kasson, Minn. and Benevolence Lodge No. 145 in Mason City, as well as Osman and El Kahir Shrines. He served as president of the North Iowa Shrine Club in 1996 and co-chaired circus activities.

Jim is survived by his wife, Elaine; five children, James Jr. of Hayfield, Minn., Randy and Sheila, of Rochester, Patti Ressie, of Waconia, Minn., and Vicki Christensen, of Winona, Minn.; three brothers, Marlowe, Maurice "Pete" and Robert; 11 grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.

Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his grandparents, who raised him, J. Hue and Martha Young; parents; wife, Jean; two sisters, three brothers and two grandchildren.

CLARION - Curtis Robert Schaumburg, 34, of Clarion, died Thursday (Sept. 23, 1999) at the Hamilton County Hospital, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, in Woolstock, with the Rev. William VanNostrand officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, in Eagle Grove.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the William Funeral Home, in Eagle Grove.

ROGER E. SAWYER

MASON CITY - Roger E. Sawyer, 85, of 186 Lakeview Drive, died Thursday (Sept. 23, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Wayside Chapel, First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Douglas Anderson officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Buckingham Cemetery, Traer.

The family will greet family and friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. His body was cremated at his request.

Roger was born Aug. 13, 1914, in Traer, Iowa to Louis and Nell (Tesmer) Sawyer. He graduated from Traer High School, attended Iowa State College and graduated from Kansas City Radio School. He joined KGLO radio in 1937 and was named Chief Engineer in 1945.

He was married to Delores E. Bangston on March 31, 1940 at her parents home in Goldfield. During his career at KGLO, television was introduced in 1954 and in 1958 a sister station, KEYC-TV was built in Mankato, Minn. He retired from KGLO in 1969 and has enjoyed trout fishing, golf, photography, amateur radio and a variety of gadgets. In his later years, he especially enjoyed having coffee every morning with his friends at the Elks.

He was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity, the First United Methodist Church, the Mason City Country Club and a life member of the BPOE #375 (Elks). He was a licensed amateur radio operator WOAXT for 63 years.

He is survived by his wife, Delores E. Sawyer, of Mason City; daughter, Suzanne Gulden and husband, Dr. Kent, of White Bear Lake, Minn.; son, Tom Sawyer and wife, Joan, of Clear Lake; daughter, Kaye Steger and husband, Ken, of Pittsburg, Texas; grandchildren, Dr. Wendy Gulden, Christopher Gulden, Jeffrey Sawyer, Stephen Sawyer, Kerry Sawyer, Scott Parks and Natalie Parks; great-grandchildren, Graham and Collin Sawyer, Courtney and Jack Parks.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

ARLENE MARIE (RIVEDAL) GILL

WEST DES MOINES - Arlene Marie Gill, 72, of West Des Moines, died of a heart ailment Friday (Sept. 17, 1999) at St. Luke's Hospital, in Kansas City, Mo. She died on a plane enroute to Seattle, Wash. to see her brother and the plane was diverted to Kansas City.

Her memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Des Moines, with Monsignor Robert Hoefler officiating.

Her body has been donated to the Des Moines University-Osteopathic Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements were by the Westover Funeral Home, Des Moines.

Arlene was born in Mason City to Sivert and Anna (Swendal) Rivedal. She attended school here and graduated in 1946. She then attended St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing, Mason City, graduating in 1953.

Arlene was a registered nurse and a certified emergency nurse. She had worked at Broadlawns Medical Center, Norwest Hospital and Hospice in Des Moines.

Arlene was active in the community by co-founding intramural sports for girls at St. Theresa's. She was softball and basketball coach for girls and youth leader at St. Theresa's. She was a volunteer nurse at WDM Dowling High School. Her inspiration was a Bible Study, Fellowship International.

Her husband, Gary Gill, formerly of Kensett, died July 13, 1999.

She is survived by a son, Gary and his wife, Karol, of San Antonio, Texas; five daughters, Cheryl Gill, of LaCrosse, Wis., Lori Liljedahl and her husband, Ken, of Des Moines, Valerie Gill, of Des Moines, Renee Johnson and her husband, Steve, of Onalaska, Wis., and Melanie Hansman and her husband, Frank, of Des Moines; and nine grandchildren. She is also survived by four sisters-in-law, Patricia Fandel and her husband, John, of Golden, Colo., Rosalie Olson and her husband, Paul, of Mason City, Bonita Kral and her husband, Roger, of Glenville, Minn., and Sandra Anderson and her husband, Wayne, of Athelstade, Wis. Her immediate family consisted of one brother, Stanley Rivedal, of Bethel, Wash. and some nieces and nephews.

Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and four brothers, Arnold, Harold, Clarence and Hawkens.
