JOSEPH A. 'JOE' GULLICKSON

NORTHWOOD - Joseph A. "Joe" Gullickson, 96, of Northwood, died Monday (Nov. 8, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the First Lutheran Church, 309 N. Ninth St., Northwood, with the Rev. Paul L. Holmer and the Rev. Allan J. Stoa, officiating. Inurnment will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the church.

The family of Joseph A. "Joe" Gullickson has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Joseph A. "Joe" Gullickson memorial fund in his memory.

His body was cremated according to his wishes.

Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th St. S., Northwood, is in charge of the arrangements.

Joseph A. "Joe" Gullickson was born on Aug. 7, 1903, in Northwood, the son of John A. and Albertina (Anderson) Gullickson. He was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at the Shell Rock Lutheran Church in rural Northwood.He attended and received his education in the Northwood School system, graduating from Northwood High School.

After completing his schooling he helped his parents on the family farm two miles southeast of Northwood.

He was united in marriage to Marcella S. Bistline on March 15, 1936, at the First Methodist Church in Mason City. After their marriage, together they farmed for three years near Rock Falls before moving to a farm northeast of Northwood, where they farming for 12 years. They moved for a short time to Denver, Colo., before moving back to Northwood in September of 1952. He continued to farm in the Northwood area until his retirement in 1970. After his retirement from farming, he continued to work selling crop hail insurance for several years until his retirement.

Joe was an avid fisherman, enjoyed wintering in Texas for 10 years and traveled extensively, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and friends.

During his life, Joe was a member of various civic organizations, including the farmers elevator board in Northwood. He was instrumental in the development of the Northwood Senior Center and recreation center on Central Avenue, was involved in the SW Telephone Company, director Farm Bureau in Worth County, board of directors of the Northwood Creamery and on the board of directors of the Grove Township School District.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church and a former member of the First Lutheran Church Council.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 63 years, Marcella Gullickson, of Northwood; three children, JoAnn Alexander and her husband, William "Bill," of Northwood, Jay Gullickson and his wife, Iva, of Farwell, Minn., and Arlen Gullickson and his wife, Janet, of Kalamazoo, Mich.; 11 grandchildren, Kevin Carlson and his wife, Lisa, Kim Kraft and her husband John, Kari Stoa and her husband, Kirk, Jodean Gullickson and his wife, Jill, Judi Gullickson, Jennifer Klimek and her husband, Richard, Amy Frauenholtz and her husband, Todd, Jean Gullickson, Karen Gullickson, Erik O'Shaughnessy and Robin Cornett and her husband, Neal; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Cleo Gullickson, of Northwood; as well as several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert Gullickson, who died in 1970; five sisters, Clarissa, Gladys, Alyce, Evelyn and Arlene; and one brother, Donald.

GERTRUDE GEORGIA NELSON

CLEAR LAKE - Gertrude Georgia Nelson, 86, of 421 S. Ninth St., died Tuesday (Nov. 9, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Burial will be at Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, and continue Friday until time of service.

Memorials may be directed to the Gertrude Georgia Nelson Memorial Fund.

Gertrude Georgia Nelson was born July 18, 1913, in Walnut, Neb., the daughter of George and Nettie (DeVries) Buerkley. Gertrude was baptized April 8, 1914, at the United Brethren Church, Walnut, Neb., and confirmed on March 24, 1929, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Venus, Neb. She graduated from high school in Creighton, Neb., in 1931.

Georgia was united in marriage to Alton Nelson on July 28, 1935, in Venus, Neb. She taught school for several years in Nebraska before moving with her husband to Clear Lake in 1952. They farmed north of town until 1964, when they sold the farm and bought Lake Park Tap and Grill in downtown Clear Lake. They sold the business and retired in 1975.

Gertrude enjoyed collecting giraffes and spending time with her family and friends, whom she was always there for.

She was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura.

Gertrude is survived by her husband, Alton, of Clear Lake; one son, Aloyce "Bud" Nelson and his wife, Juan, of Burlington; two daughters, Natalie Weber and her husband, David and Elouise Harmeyer and her husband, Lloyd, all of Clear Lake; seven grandchildren, Teresa Runia and her husband, Curt, of Maplewood, Minn., Dwight Krukow, of Clear Lake, Sheila Krukow, of Maplewood, Minn., Susan Story and her husband, Dave, of Rowlett, Texas, Ronda Fredrickson and her husband, Mark, of Tacoma, Wash., Julie Smith, of Kent, Wash. and Brett Nelson and his wife, Carin, of Burlington; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Clayton Nelson and his wife, Wanda, of South Sioux City, Neb., and several nieces and nephews.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and one great-grandchild.

THOMAS BLAKE

ST. ANSGAR - Thomas Blake, 49, of St. Ansgar, died Wednesday (Nov. 10, 1999) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage, following a sudden heart attack.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Cremation will follow the service with inurnment at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Visitation Catholic Church hall with a scripture service at 7 p.m.

Champion Funeral Home, Osage, is in charge of arrangements.

Tom was born on Oct. 27, 1950, in Osage in Mitchell County, the son of Othmar and Gladys (Smith) Blake. He grew up in the Meyer area and graduated from Marion High School in Stacyville in 1968. He was a member of the Iowa National Guard.

On Sept. 6, 1985, Thomas was united in marriage to Joan Markham Muller at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He farmed for several years and worked at Tops Business Forms as a night supervisor.

Tom played softball for more than 20 years. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his mother, Gladys Blake, of Stacyville; his wife, Joan, of St. Ansgar; stepsons, Mike Muller and his wife, Denee, of Waverly and Larry Muller and his fiancee, Rhonda, of Osage; stepdaughter, Lynn Scott and her husband, Mark, of Lawler; six grandchildren, Stephen, Shanda, Stacia, Kali, Melanie and Sophia; five brothers, Dean Blake, of Mason City, John Blake and his wife, Mary, of Cottonwood, Minn., Dan Blake and his wife, Sue, of Stacyville, David Blake and his wife, Kathy, of Osage, and Tim Blake and his wife, Kathie, of Osage; two sisters, Jean Hemann and her husband, Denny, of Osage, and Janet Chapman and her husband, Jeff, of Marshall, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Othmar; a sister, Ruth Ann; his maternal grandparents, Albert and Margaret Smith and his paternal grandparents, Carl and Mary Blake.

ROBERT ARTHUR HANSEN

SUMNER, Wash. - Robert Arthur Hansen, 77, of Sumner, Wash., died Nov. 2, 1999, in Puyallup, Wash.

He was born on a farm in Rockford on June 27, 1922, to Fred and Clara Hansen, and was one of four children. He married Marjorie Alitz in 1943. Born to this union was their daughter, Debra and son, Scott.

After graduating from the University of Iowa School of Forestry, he began a long career with the Weyerhaeuser Company, beginning in Longview, Wash. He advanced to various positions throughout his 35-year career, retiring from the corporate headquarters' Timberlands Group in 1985.

He was a member of the American Society of Forestry, the Linden Golf Course, United Methodist Church and served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II.

The passing of a good husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend will be mourned by many.

He is survived by his loving family; his wife, Marjorie; daughter, Debra (Don) Walls; son, Scott (Rae); grandchildren, Dana (Dave) Warner, Beau and Adam; sisters, Virginia Jones and Georgia Johnson. He considered Dale, Julie and Kelsey Burghardt as part of his immediate family.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Nov. 6 at the Puyallup United Methodist Church, 1919 West Pioneer.

DON SHILLINGTON

BANCROFT - Don Shillington, 81, of Bancroft, died Tuesday (Nov. 9, 1999) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the St. John Catholic Church, Bancroft. Burial will be in the St. John Cemetery, with military honors by the Bancroft American Legion.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft.

MARCELINE ROEDER

ALGONA - Marceline Roeder, 87, of Algona, formerly of the Wesley and St. Benedict area, died Wednesday (Nov. 10, 1999) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona. Burial will be in St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery, St. Benedict.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona, with a 3 p.m. parish rosary and a 7 p.m. parish prayer service.

GRACE L. WEARDA

DUMONT - Grace L. Wearda, 98, of Dumont, died Wednesday (Nov. 10, 1999) at the Franklin General Nursing Facility in Hampton.

M. E. 'SMITTY' MESSERSMITH

RICEVILLE - Merritt Eugene Messersmith, 75, passed away on Tuesday (Nov. 9, 1999) following a massive heart attack.

He was born on May 25, 1924, at Red Oak, the son of Wilmeth and Walter Messersmith. He graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1941. He served in the United States Navy Air Force from 1941 to 1945 and was a member of the VPB 118 Squadron.

He was married to Bea Floriano on Feb. 25, 1944, at San Diego, Calif. To this union two daughters were born - Karen Zahasky and Gail Morris.

He was a newspaper editor by trade and was employed at the Shenandoah (Iowa) Sentinel and newspapers in Alliance, Neb., Maquoketa, Monticello and Independence, Iowa. He and his wife purchased the Riceville Recorder in 1957. He was editor there for 39 years, retiring in June of 1996. In 1983 he received the "Master Editor-Publisher" award from the Iowa Newspaper Association. He is past president of the association and the Iowa Newspaper Foundation.

"Smitty" was a member of the Riceville Rest Home board for 25 years, was a member of the Roy Gue Post No. 244 of the American Legion and the Father F. Stirn chapter of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Bea; two daughters, Karen Zahasky and her husband, Merlyn, of Tucson, Ariz., and Gail Morris and her husband, Jim, of Riceville; three granddaughters, Julie and Paul Dietrich, of Tucson, Ariz., Suzanne and John Morse, of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Monica Zahasky, of Bloomington, Ind.; two grandsons, Tim and his wife, Heather Morris, of Ames, and Andrew Morris, of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Carla and husband, Roland Pulley, of Shenandoah; and one brother, Merlin and wife, Ruby Messersmith, of Edwards, Calif.; one aunt, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 15, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville, with Father John Mosher officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville, with a 5 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7 p.m. scripture service.
