** SISTER MARY ANASTASIA KENNEDY, RSM

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - Sister Mary Anastasia Kennedy, 93, a Sister of Mercy for 71 years, one of the last of a dynamic group of sister nurses from Iowa who served in Mercy hospitals there and in Michigan, died March 10, 1999, at McAuley Center, Farmington Hills, Mich., after an extended illness.

Born Eileen Kennedy in Lake Mills, Iowa, Sister entered the Mercy Community at Mt. St. Agnes, Dubuque, Iowa, at age 22, immediately after her graduation from the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Mason City, Iowa. She later earned a bachelor of science from Mercy College, Detroit.

Most of Sister Anastasia's life of mercy was spent in direct care of the sick in the heart of busy hospital settings. She began her career at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa, as floor supervisor, and later would serve there as surgical supervisor and religious superior. She also spent some years in the capacities of surgical supervisor, nursing service or local superior, at Iowa's St. Joseph Mercy Hospitals in Fort Dodge, Mason City, Dubuque and Cresco.

In Michigan, Sister was surgical supervisor at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor, in the 1940s and early 1950s, and floor supervisor at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland in Pontiac in the 1960s.

Sister's administrative talents were recruited also by the General Motherhouse of the Sisters of Mercy in Bethesda, Md., where for five years in the 1950s she served as the local religious superior, and again in the late 1960s, as executive housekeeper.

Sister retired to a ministry of prayer at Dubuque's McAuley Center, then on the campus of Loras College, in 1978, and in 1984 came to McAuley Center in Farmington Hills.

Sister Anastasia's gifts of ministry were enhanced by her natural charm and vibrancy, and what could be called a "blithe spirit" which was infectious and made her loved by staff and by patients and doctors alike. She loved to sing, continuing to do so even after her illness drained her energy and high spirits.

She is survived by two nieces and by the sisters of her community, who will greatly miss her.

A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today in McAuley Center Chapel, 28750 Eleven Mile Road, Farmington Hills, Mich., Gate 4.

The Funeral Liturgy will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the chapel. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield, Mich.
