** Holda M. Olk

SHEFFIELD — Holda M. Olk, 96, of Sheffield, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998, at the Sheffield Care Center, Sheffield.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Dec. 22, 1998, at the Immanual United Church of Christ, in Latimer, with the Rev. Jeff Long officiating. Burial was in the Hampton Cemetery, Hampton.

Holda was born Nov. 4, 1902, in rural Ackley, the daughter of Fred Eichmeier and Swanetta "Nettie" Alberts. She attended rural school near Dougherty and graduated from Sheffield High School and the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, after which she taught for three years in the Dougherty and Latimer areas.

On March 6, 1923 in Sheffield, she married Ernest Olk. They farmed near Allison for two years and in the Chapin area for 38 years before retiring and moving to Hampton in 1963.

Holda was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ and church's women's fellowship. She also served on the Chapin School board for a number of years.

Holda felt blessed to have her daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren a part of her everyday life. She enjoyed cooking, baking and sewing.

She is survived by a daughter, Lucille Deam, of Sheffield; a sister, Hilda Stock and her husband, John, of Dumont; two grandchildren, Richard Deam and his wife, Connie, of Sheffield, and Nancy Adams and her husband, Larry, of Chapin; five great-grandchildren, Seth Deam, Maria Deam, Ira Deam, Andrea Adams and Michaela Adams.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Fred; a daughter, Minnie; and three brothers, Fred, Herman and Albert Eichmeier; and also a son-in-law, Willis Deam.

** John E. Wood

WODEN — John E. Wood, 92, died Tuesday (Jan. 5, 1999) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Willis Nicholson officiating. Interment will be in the Bingham Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Cataldo Funeral Chapel.

Other funeral arrangements are incomplete at the funeral chapel.

** Louise M. Hermann

ROCKFORD — Louise M. Hermann, 107, of 105 Fifth St. N.W., Rockford, died Sunday morning (Jan. 3, 1999) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church, Rockford, with the Rev. Ron Friedell officiating. Interment will be at the Roseville Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the church, with a parish scripture service at 7 p.m., followed by a rosary.

Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, Rockford, is in charge of arrangements.

Louise was born on March 7, 1891 on a farm near Charles City, to Frank and Barbara (Hanah) Vala. She was one of six children. She attended the Oakwood School and then was united in marriage to John "Jack" P. Hermann on Oct. 4, 1916. To this union were born three children.

When she moved to Rockford, she started helping her sister, Anna Vala with her sewing and seamstress work.

Louise loved to dance and enjoyed the Lawrence Welk show as well as watching golf and baseball. She was a great gardener, raising flowers and canning her vegetables. She loved to spend time at her home and did so until this last November when she moved to the Nora Springs Care Center. Louise was an excellent cook and at Christmas time made her specialty, Kolache.

She was a long time member of Holy Name Catholic Church.

Those thankful for having shared Louise's life include her three children, Marcus and his wife, Anna Mae Hermann, of Marble Rock; Mary Louise and her husband, Leonard Greiner, of Iowa Falls; and Margaret Hermann, of Rochester, Minn.; one sister, Mrs. Lydia Hermann, of Yankton, S.D.; five grandchildren, Bill and Joe Hermann, Jim and Steve Greiner, and Joan Jennings; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; two sisters, Mary Musil and Anna Vala; and two brothers, Charles and Frank Vala.

** Arthur Charles Rice

MASON CITY — Arthur Charles Rice Sr., 65, of 625 14th Ave. N., #111, died Friday (Jan. 1, 1999) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

His body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Private family graveside services will be held at Grinnell Cemetery.

Arthur Charles Rice Sr. was born Dec. 8, 1933, in Grinnell, the son of Merlin and Leona (Rinshaw) Rice. He owned Art's Body Shop in Grinnell and Marshalltown. He worked as a salesman at Price Motors in Mason City, until falling ill in 1996.

He was a great creator of many crafts and a fine artsman.

He is survived by his children, Arthur C. Rice Jr. "Ace", of Clear Lake, Mike Rice, Melody Rice and Rachell Rice, all of Los Angeles, Steve Griffith of Clear Lake, Gina McClun and her husband, Brent, of Lawrence, Kan., Kim Gjetley and her husband, Bruce, of Thornton; his grandchildren, Amber, Kendra, Kali and Bruce Gjetley, all of Thornton, Stephanie and Sammoth Griffith of Clear Lake, and Jason and Scott Rice of Marshalltown.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

** Stanley Nash

MARBLE ROCK — Stanley Nash, 48, died Monday (Jan. 4, 1999) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Reid's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dave Callison of Faith Baptist Church, Mason City, officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, and from 10 a.m. to service time on Saturday at the funeral chapel.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Stanley Nash Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Stanley Nash was born July 29, 1950, in Charles City.

Survivors include a son, Ben Nash of Rockwell; two daughters, Amy Fisher and Amber Nash, both of Nashua; two grandchildren; his mother, Lola Nash of Charles City; two brothers, Tom Nash of Rudd, and Daniel Nash of Charles City; and two sisters, Gloria Willer of Aloha, Ore., and Miriam Nash of Kansas City, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his father, and two brothers.

** Peter C. Goodnature

GARNER — Peter C. Goodnature, 80, died Tuesday (Jan. 5, 1999) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church with the Rev. John W. Herman officiating.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday with a scriptural wake service at 4:30 p.m., at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel.

Other arrangements are incomplete at the funeral chapel.

** Stanley A. Collins

MASON CITY — Stanley A. Collins, 89, of 2002 S. Georgia Ave., died Monday (Jan. 4, 1999) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Shogren officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. Major-Erickson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The family suggests memorials to Wesley United Methodist Church or the organization of your choice.

Stan was born on Dec. 22, 1909, on the family farm near Albion. He graduated from Ames Public High School. At Iowa State College he lettered in wrestling and rode in the ROTC trick cavalry team. After graduating from Iowa State College he worked as an engineer for the Civilian Conservation Corp. He married Clarice Torkelson of Story City on June 22, 1935.

During World War II he served in the Army Engineer Corp. in Europe. As the Special Area Engineer he was responsible for construction of Air Force and Eisenhower's Supreme Headquarters in England, France and Germany. He remained in the Army Reserve and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel with 37 years of service.

He was a district engineer for the Soil Conservation Service in Eldora, from 1945 to 1953, and an area engineer in Mason City from 1953 to 1971. He was project engineer for the 31,500 acre Deer Creek Watershed in Worth County. From 1950 to 1995, Stan managed his farm as well as several farms in central Iowa for relatives who were in foreign service.

Stan was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church. He was the local champion and district field officer for National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He served as the Iowa Civil Defense Radiological Officer for several years.

Stan was an avid reader throughout his life. He enjoyed traveling throughout the world, photography and fishing at the family cabin in Cass Lake, Minn.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Clarice, of Mason City; sons, Stanley B. Collins and his wife, Karla, of St. Paul, Minn., and Thomas E. Collins and his wife, Shirley, of St. Paul; five grandchildren, Christopher, Mary, Philip, Gregory and Douglas; four great-grandchildren, Jordan, Bayleigh, Margaret and Brogen; a brother, Edgar V. Collins Jr. of Ames; and a sister, Mary C. Johnson of Ames.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar V. and Amy W. Collins; his son, David W.; daughter-in-law, Ann; and two grandsons, Scott and Jeffrey.

** Max Ronald Schaefer

BUFFALO CENTER — Max Ronald Schaefer, 69, of Buffalo Center, died Sunday (Jan. 3, 1999) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center West, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Buffalo Center, with the Rev. Lois Abel officiating. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Winter Funeral Home, 414 First St. N.W., Buffalo Center and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Max Ronald Schaefer was born July 15, 1929, in Buffalo Center.

Survivors include two sons, Morey Schaefer, of Mankato, Minn., and Marty Schaefer, of Buffalo Center; and one brother, Denis Schaefer, of Ames.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and two sisters.

** Marie F. Denning

HAMPTON — Marie F. Denning, 83, of Hampton, died Tuesday (Jan. 5, 1999) at Franklin General Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Hampton.

** Herbert A. Jensen

SHEFFIELD — Herbert A. Jensen, of Sheffield, died Monday (Jan. 4, 1999) in Sheffield.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Zion-St. John Lutheran Church, Sheffield, with the Rev. Kent Mechler officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.

Herbert Jensen was born in Seattle, Wash., to John and Nora Jensen. He received his education there, graduating from Lincoln High School and Wilson Business College.

He served in the Navy from 1941 to 1945. On June 26, 1943, he was married to Lezona Oelkers at the Luther Place Memorial Church, in Washington, D.C.

Before entering the Navy, he worked for Western Electric. After his discharge, while in Seattle, he was employed by the Seattle Police Force and Augsburg Publishing Company.

He moved to Sheffield in 1946 and owned and operated the Herb & Lee Cafe. He later worked for AMPI in Mason City from which he retired in 1981. He was a member of the Zion-St. John Lutheran Church of Sheffield, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife, Lezona; three nephews, Roger Crawford and his wife, Cynthia, of Parkville, Mo.; Jay Crawford and his wife, Jane, of Iowa City, and John Nesholm and his wife, Laurel, of Seattle; one niece, Marcia Etnier and her husband, Roger, of Sheffield; several great-nieces and a great-nephew; one brother, Earl Lethenstrom, of Seattle, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Lillian Nesholm.

Lois M. Vigdal

WHITTEMORE — Lois M. Vigdal, 77, of Whittemore, died Monday (Jan. 4, 1999) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Michael Catholic Church, Whittemore, with the Rev. Ed Murray officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Whittemore, with a 3 p.m. parish rosary and a 7:30 p.m. rosary.

Lois M. Vigdal was born March 20, 1921, in Oyens.

Survivors include four sons, Roger Vigdal, of Spirit Lake, Carl Vigdal, of Keller, Texas, Larry Vigdal, of Embarrass, Minn. and John Vigdal, of Rolfe; two daughters, Mary Voigt, of Pickerington, Ohio, and Ann Hansen Vogt, of Big Lake, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Briggs, of Charles City, and Rose Mary Chambers, of Marble Rock; three brothers, Ronald Hansen, of Algona, Wayne Hansen, of Galena, Ill., and Vic Hansen, of Schaumburg, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, and two sisters.

** Carl Long

CORWITH — Carl Long, 83, of Corwith, died Tuesday (Jan. 5, 1999) at Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Corwith.

** Evelyn C. Kinion

MASON CITY — Evelyn C. Kinion, 84, died Monday (Jan. 4, 1999) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral Mass will be held at noon Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Carl A. Ries officiating. Burial will be in the Grundy Center Cemetery, Grundy Center.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a Catholic Daughters of America Rosary at 5 p.m., and a Scriptural Wake Service following at 7 p.m.

The family requests that memorials be directed to Hospice of North Iowa in memory of Evelyn C. Kinion.

Evelyn Carol Kinion was born May 25, 1914, in Waterloo, the daughter of Frank and Kathrine (Burger) Manske.

She was united in marriage to Keith F. Kinion on Nov. 28, 1934, at St. John's Catholic Church in Waterloo.

Evelyn and Keith enjoyed spending their winters in Apache Junction, Ariz., and their summers camping in Decorah. She also was an avid reader of novels.

She was a wonderful mother, wife and friend and will be dearly missed.

Evelyn was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Anthony's Circle and the Catholic Daughters of America.

Those left to cherish her memory are three children, Kay Kinion and his wife, Lillian, of Springfield, Mo., Karen Neimants and her husband, Michael, of Omaha, Neb., and Karla Goethe and her husband, Allen, of Arlington, Va.; grandchildren, Kevin, Kurtis, Konnie, Kent, Keith, Katey, Kimberly, Jacob and James; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Catherine Kelly and her husband, Richard, of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Keith; a daughter, Kathleen; and one brother, Robert.
