** Sarah V. Aamodt

MASON CITY — Sarah V. Aamodt, 87, of 418 S. Polk Place, died Sunday (Sept. 20, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and at the church one hour prior to the service Thursday.

** Iris Mildred LaFavre

KLEMME — Iris Mildred LaFavre, 87, died Saturday (Sept. 19, 1998) at the home of her daughter in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church, Klemme, with the Rev. Curtis DeVance officiating. Interment will be in Amsterdam Cemetery, Goodell.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Tenold Funeral Home in Klemme.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Iris Mildred (Sherwood) LaFavre, the daughter of William Leon and Margaret Emily (Griggs) Sherwood, was born May 2, 1911, in rural Goodell. She graduated from Goodell High School and attended Drake University Junior High School Teaching Program.

She taught at Numa Schools and moved to teach at Latimer Junior High. She retired from teaching in 1939 and married Clell "Pat" LaFavre on July 1, 1939, in Unionville, Mo.

They lived in Des Moines where she worked for Broadlawns Hospital with the iron lung for polio patients. They moved to the farm in rural Klemme in 1941.

A very special interest of Iris and her sister was the development of Eldridge Sherwood Park, which was part of their land. She and Pat were active in the National Dairy Association, being especially interested in brown Swiss dairy cows, winning many awards. Her special interests were horses, reading and communicating with many friends and acquaintances. Her happiness was her grandchildren and following their lives. She was an active member of the Goodell and Klemme United Methodist Churches, holding various offices.

Iris is survived by her son, Jerry LaFavre, Lakeville, Minn.; a daughter, Margaret Sasse and her husband, Gus, Mason City; grandchildren, Scott L. LaFavre and his wife, Shari, Lakeville, Minn., Jeffrey L. LaFavre and his wife, Maxine, Burnsville, Minn., Adam T. LaFavre, Prior Lake, Minn., Cherrie Peterson and her husband, Tim, Owatonna, Minn., Rachelle C. Kallevig and her husband, Larry, Plymouth, Minn., Robert A. Gerdes and his wife, Kendra, Waukesha, Wis.; great-grandchildren, Dustin, Christal Ann, Brittney, Bethany, Landon, Lauren, Alexis, Alana and Austin LaFavre, Trey, Rachelle, Chantel and Trom Peterson; a sister, LaVonne Emmons, Emmons, Minn.; step-grandchildren, Robert Sasse and his wife, Kim, Joel Sasse and his fiance, LaBeth Sheldon, and Carl Sasse and his wife, Sandy; step-great-grandchildren, Kristen, Courtney, Chandler, and Devlynn Sasse, and many nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, and her cat, "Simon."

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Clell "Pat" LaFavre.

** Kathryn Percy Rasmussen

MASON CITY — Kathryn Percy Rasmussen, 94, formerly of Mason City, died Friday (Sept. 18, 1998) at the Odd Fellow Rebekah Home, Green Bay, Wis.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. David Shogren of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Friends may call from noon until service time Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Wesley United Methodist Church, Mason City.

Kathryn was born April 6, 1904, in Titonka, the daughter of Harry and Clara (Crees) Percy. The family moved to Nora Springs in 1907 where Kathryn attended school; in 1926 the family moved to Mason City.

She worked for the Iowa Tea Co. from 1926 to 1948, opened her own store, Kathryn's China and Gift Shop, which she operated for 12 years then worked for Morel Jewelers for eight years and retired in 1968.

Kathryn married Leonard F. Rasmussen Aug. 1, 1970, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

She was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church and Eastern Star Lodge for more than 50 years.

Mrs. Rasmussen is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard; her parents; two sisters, Hazel Percy and Mary Schultz; and two brothers, Frank Percy and Harry Percy.

** Maybelle J. Lee

MASON CITY — Maybelle J. Lee, 87, of 135 24th Street S.W., died Friday (Sept. 18, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Eugene Wolfley of Riverside Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Military rites will be performed by Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and prior to the service Tuesday.

Memorials may be directed to the Maybelle J. Lee Memorial Fund.

Maybelle J. Lee was born Nov. 17, 1910, in Webster, S.D., to Jack and Ada (Parks) Leegard. She graduated from Webster High School in 1927. She then moved to Minneapolis, Minn., where she attended the University of Minnesota. She became an RN and earned her bachelor of science nursing degree.

Maybelle then joined the Navy Nurse Corps and served for two years. The highlight of her service was when she served as Admiral Nimitz's personal nurse during a hospitalization.

She returned to Minnesota after her time in the Navy and earned her certification as a public health nurse. She was a public health nurse in Alaska before relocating to Walker, Minn., to finish her career as the night supervisor at the Ah-Gwah-Ching Nursing Home.

Maybelle retired in 1975 and moved to Mason City in 1976. She was a Lutheran and a member of the Silver Advantage Club, the Senior Citizens' Center and the Easter Seal Society.

Maybelle is survived by her brother, Bud Leegard and his wife, Viola, of Minneapolis, Minn., and two nephews, Clifford Reublin, of Mason City, and Jack Reublin, of Alabama.

She will be missed by her caring family, Dale Foster of Mason City, Janice Kelly of Mankato, Minn., and Bill, John and Jim Foster of Mason City.

** Wenonah M. Hampton

MASON CITY — Wenonah M. Hampton, 64, died Sunday (Sept. 20, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center West, Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania, Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating. Burial will take place Thursday in Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, and will continue one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.

Other arrangements are incomplete at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel.

** Alberta C. "Bert" Mathers

GREENE — Alberta C. "Bert" Mathers, 63, of 405 East Ely St., died Saturday (Sept. 19, 1998) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1998, at the United Methodist Church, Greene, with the Rev. Gene Burry officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Greene; a public scripture service will begin at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services Wednesday at the church.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Alberta Mathers Memorial Fund at the United Methodist Church or the American Legion in care of the family.

Alberta Christine (Heitland) Mathers was born March 23, 1935, at the Franklin Hospital, Hampton.

She is survived by her husband, Lyle Mathers, of Greene; two daughters, Tracy Mathers, of Des Moines, and Tammy Litterer, of Greene; one son, Lyle Mathers Jr., of Greene; one grandson; and one sister, Kathleen Cormier, of Greene.

She was preceded in death by an infant son and her parents.

MASON CITY — Henrietta R. "Hattie" Zirnhelt, 94, of Mason City, formerly of Lisbon, N.D., died Saturday (Sept. 19, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Lisbon, N.D., with the Rev. C.F. Wilhelm officiating. Burial will be in St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery, Lisbon.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Armstrong Funeral Home, Lisbon, with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Henrietta Zirnhelt was born May 29, 1904, in Alice, N.D.

Survivors include two sons, James Zirnhelt, of Mason City and Edward Zirnhelt, of Churchton, Md.; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter, one son, and two brothers.

** Lewis Joseph Gatton

ALGONA — Lewis Joseph Gatton, 86, of 1906 90th Ave., died Sunday (Sept. 20, 1998) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Saint Cecelia Catholic Church, with the Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona, with a 7 p.m. parish rosary.

Lewis Joseph Gatton was born March 28, 1912, in Dundee, Minn.

Survivors include his wife, Julia, of Algona; one son, Richard Gatton, of Mason City; three daughters, Louise Strayer, of Armstrong, Ramona Anderson, of Algona and Ella Roth, of Rake; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold Gatton, of Hampton and Kenneth Gatton, of Algona; five sisters, Mary Lee, of Sioux City, Hazel Woods, of Sheffield, Rosella Hemmerick, of Greene, Emma Moore, of Titonka, and Clara Nelson, of Egan, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, three brothers, and two sisters.

** Alan C. Tegtmeier

MARBLE ROCK — Alan C. "Hoppy" Tegtmeier, 49, of Marble Rock, died Sunday (Sept. 20, 1998) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

Memorial services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Schumburg Funeral Home, Rockford, with the Rev. Rosemary Rohde-Frank, of the Rockford United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Alan was born Jan. 4, 1949, in Charles City.

Survivors include his wife, Marla, of Marble Rock; two daughters, Shari Tegtmeier, of Charles City and Shelley Tegtmeier, of Marble Rock; three brothers, Roy, of Rudd; Paul, of Rockford; and Irven, of Marble Rock; four sisters, Lois Fisher, of Marble Rock, Maxine Nordman, of Mason City, Thelma Nixt, of Greene, and Janice Beznoska, of Rudd; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

** Marian Holland

BLUE EARTH, Minn. — Funeral services for Marian Holland, 90, of Algona, formerly of Blue Earth, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, in Blue Earth, with Pastor George Krueger officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Blue Earth. Mrs. Holland died Saturday (Sept. 19, 1998) at the Good Samaritan Center, in Algona.

Visitation will be one hour before services at the church. Patton Funeral Home, Blue Earth, is in charge of arrangements.

Marian Catherine Eckhardt was born May 19, 1908, in Mora, Minn., the daughter of Otto and Henrietta (Footh) Eckhardt. She graduated from Blue Earth High School in 1926 and later attended Mankato Commercial College. She was employed by a local physician and dentist.

She married Archie Holland on Aug. 28, 1929, in Blue Earth. They lived in Elmore, Minn., a short period and later moved to Frost. They moved to Blue Earth in 1956. Mr. Holland died in 1977. After living in Winnebago from 1978 to 1985, she moved to Algona.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School.

Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society or Kidney Foundation.

She is survived by four daughters, Elizabeth and her husband, Herbert Larson, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Lucille and her husband, Donald Walters, of Mason City; Nancy and her husband, Pete Hugo, of Algona; and Debra and her husband, Russell Richardson, of Armstrong; two sons, Richard and his wife, Julia Holland, of South Salem, Ohio and Michael and his wife, Suzanne Holland, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Alice Dwight, of Altoona; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, two infant sons, and one infant daughter.

** Alberta C. "Bert" Mathers

Alberta Christine (Heitland) Mathers was born March 23, 1935, at the Franklin Hospital, Hampton, daughter of Abel and Edna (Bird) Heitland and died Saturday (Sept. 19, 1998) at her home in Greene from complications of cancer.

She was baptized at the Methodist Church in Chapin on May 5, 1935. At the age of one year, she moved with her parents and sister from Chapin to Clear Lake where her parents farmed.

She attended Lake No. 8 and Lake No. 4 country schools and then public school in Clear Lake before entering Roosevelt Junior High School in Mason City. She attended schools in Yakima, Wash., Glenville, Minn., Albert Lea, Minn., and Rudd before returning to Clear Lake where she graduated in 1953. She received her nurses training at St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing at Sioux City, Mason City and Dubuque.

On July 25, 1955, she was united in marriage to Lyle Mathers by the Rev. H. D. Clark in the Methodist Church at Mitchell, S.D. To this union were born four children.

They made their first home in Rockford where she was employed at the Rockford Convalescent Home until 1957, when they moved to Greene where she became employed by the Clark Rest Home.

In 1968, Lyle and Bert became co-owners and operated Mathers Nursing Home until 1992. Bert became a licensed nursing home administrator in 1973. She worked as a part time LPN for the new owners (Liebe Care Center) until 1993 when she left to care for her husband during his illness.

She enjoyed the many fishing-camping trips with her family, crocheting and reading. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women in Greene. She dearly loved her family and her greatest joy was family get-togethers and spending time with her grandson. She treasured her many friendships, old and new.

Living family members include her loving husband of 43 years, Lyle Mathers, of Greene; two daughters, Tracy Mathers, of Des Moines, and Tammy and her husband, Travis Litterer, of Greene; one son, Lyle Mathers Jr., of Greene; one grandson, Justin Dean Litterer; and one sister, Kathleen Cormier, of Greene; two sisters-in-law, Shirley and Elvis Cullum, and Joyce Mathers, of Jacksonville, Ark.; two brothers-in-law, Francis Diller, of Marshalltown, and Leo Mathers, of Jacksonville; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her second stepmother, Minnie Heitland, of Gladbrook; a stepsister, Shirley and her husband, Rick McGonigle, of Clarion; three stepbrothers, Bill and his wife, Iola Maertens, of Toledo, Jon and his wife, Pat Maertens, of Mesa, Ariz.; and Roy and his wife, Joan Maertens, of Mason City; and two stepsisters from Abel Heitland’s second marriage, whom Alberta held in special remembrance: "Torch" and "Peggy."

She was preceded in death by her son Scott, who died in infancy; her parents; and her first stepmother.

MASON CITY — Wenonah M. Hampton, 65, of Mason City, died Sunday (Sept. 20, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center West.

Wenonah Mynonah Hampton was born Sept. 9, 1933, in Wilton, daughter of Rudolf and Irene Grace (Casebeer) Walter. Wenonah graduated from Mason City High School and then in 1950, she graduated from Mercy School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. She worked at Mercy Hospital for 40 years, retiring due to illness in 1990.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, ceramics and painting. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include three children, Greg A. Hampton and his wife, Shari, of Clear Lake; Dianna L. Reynolds and her husband, Robert, of Richardson, Texas; and Paul F. Hampton and his wife, Lori, of Mason City; two sisters, Clara Blocker and her husband, Roy, of Council Bluffs; and Mary Collamore and her husband, William, of Alvo, Neb.; one brother, Rudy Walter and his wife, Gwen, of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Kevin and Matthew Hampton, both of Clear Lake; Barrett Reynolds, of Richardson, Texas; and Jamey Hohenfeld, of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Nellie Younce; and a brother in infancy.

Memorials may be given to the Sarah V. Aamodt Memorial Fund.

Sarah was born Jan. 1, 1911, in Ventura, the daughter of Hugh Michael and Mary Nell (Blakney) Jones. She attended schools in Burchinal and Garner.

Sarah married Joe Aslak Aamodt on Dec. 22, 1928, at the Trinity Lutheran parsonage by the late Rev. Oliver L.N. Wigdall. Sarah worked at Marshall and Swift for 42 years in the alteration department.

She was past president of the Marshall and Swift Union, volunteered at Mercy Hospital and was a 70-year member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Sarah is survived by two daughters, Ivedene Patten, of Cedar Rapids; and Vera Keeling, of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Connie Patten, Tom Patten, Mike Patten, Joey Keeling, Tim Patten, Dan Patten and Kevin Keeling; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert L. Jones, of Mason City and Martin D. Jones, of Dows; two sisters, Martha Paulson, of Clear Lake and Mary Ellen Collins, of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

Sarah was preceded in death by her parents; husband; triplets, two daughters and one son; two grandchildren; four brothers, Hugh, William, Charles and Jim; one son-in-law; and one sister, Florence White.

** Raymond Wust

ALLISON — Raymond Wust, 68, of Allison, died Sunday (Sept. 20, 1998) at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church, Clarksville, with the Rev. Norman Omodt officiating. Burial will be in Butler Center Cemetery, rural Allison.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Allison.

Raymond Wust was born Nov. 12, 1950, in Clarksville.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen Wust, of Allison; two sons, Michael Wust, of Denver and Mark Wust, of Rockford; four daughters, Darlis Happel, of Plainfield; Mishelle O’Brien, of West Union; Kathleen Burman, of Janesville; and Rebecca Jaeger, of Ames; two sisters, Bernadine Krull, of Clarksville and Amelia Schipper, of Allison; 22 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two grandchildren, one infant brother, and one sister.

** Reaka A. Buschmann

BELMOND — Funeral services for Reaka A. Buschmann, 94, of Belmond, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Tenold Funeral Chapel, Belmond, with the Rev. William Kroon officiating. Interment will be in the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery, Belmond.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services on Friday.

Reaka Albertje Buschmann, the daughter of L.F. and Albertje (Storenborg) Buschmann was born June 18, 1904 in Hancock County near Goodell. She attended Belmond Schools and graduated with the Class of 1925.

She attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City and was a secretary for Nissen Packing Plant in Webster City for many years. She later returned to Belmond to help care for her parents and continued to help families care for their loved ones in their homes. She also worked in nursing homes in Belmond.

Reaka was a faithful member of the Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond.

She died on Monday (Sept. 21, 1998) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center, in Mason City, where she had resided since April of 1988.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Louise Buschmann, of Belmond; nephew, Paul Buschmann and his wife, Susan, of Platte City, Mo.; and their children, Jonathan, Zackary and Sarah; nephew, Philip Buschmann and his wife, Cyrena, of Sigourney; and their children, Michelle, Aaron and Kyle.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Elzo and Harm; and a sister, Antje, in infancy.

** James E. Russell

CLARION — James E. Russell, 61, of Clarion, died Monday (Sept. 21, 1998) at the Iowa Methodist Hospital, in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John’s Catholic Church, in Clarion, with the Rev. Wayne Droessler, officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.

LAKOTA — Mrs. Ernest "Betty Jean" Hard, 63, of 309 Second St. Lakota died Saturday afternoon (September 19, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Hospital.

Betty was born the youngest child of 15 children to Otto and Maren (Nielsen) Anderson, in Mason City, on January 13, 1935. Betty attended school in Mason City.

Betty was united in marriage to Ernest L. Hard, on July 25, 1953, in Forest City. To this union was born three children.

Betty was interested in many different endeavors and worked for the Kirby Company and then as a cook at the Harbor Inn in Ventura and the Britt Country Club. She also worked for Fiberco in Clear Lake and liquor stores in Council Bluffs and Fulton, Mo.

Her family was a great enjoyment to her and she spent many hours being with her grandchildren and attending their activities. In her spare time she baked, canned and played continuous rummy. She enjoyed little kids and taking care of the pets and other animals.

Betty is survived by her husband of 45 years, Ernest; her one daughter, Dawn and her husband, Brad Lunning, of Mason City; two sons, Larry "George" and his wife, Michelle Hard, of Blue Earth, Minn.; and Gerald and his wife, Jody Hard, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren, Sarah and Lydia Hard, of Blue Earth; Brad Lunning Jr. and his fiancee, Dana Clampitt; Jamie Lunning and his fiancee, Kara Radcliff, all of Mason City; Curtis and Debra Hard, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one sister, Lily Imlay, of Clear Lake; and one brother, Ernest and his wife, Marian Andersen, of Mason City.

Mr. Tegtmeier passed away Sunday (Sept. 20, 1998) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

Alan was born on Jan. 4, 1949, in Charles City, the son of George R. and Emma L. (Hesse) Tegtmeier, of Marble Rock. He attended school in the Marble Rock School System, served his country from 1969 through 1971 and was later married to Marla J. Freeburg in the Little Brown Church at Nashua.

Virginia Mae Bonjour was born on Feb. 17, 1920, in Ross Township in Franklin County, the daughter of Arthur and Viola (Tueke) Dittberner. She was a graduate of Sheffield High School.

Virginia was united in marriage to Alvin F. Bonjour on July 20, 1941.

She enjoyed cooking, baking, crocheting, embroidery work and loved to travel.

MASON CITY — Robert L. Torkelson, 50, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Mason City, died Tuesday (Sept. 22, 1998) of cancer, at the University Medical Center, Las Vegas.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating.

No visitation will be held; his body was cremated.

Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., is in charge of arrangements.

Robert L. "Bob" Torkelson was born July 9, 1948, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Richard and Leona (Price) Torkelson.

Robert graduated from Mason City High School in 1966. Following graduation, Robert moved to Davenport where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1992.

Robert then moved to Las Vegas where he was a blackjack dealer at Joker's Wild Casino, Henderson, Nev. He later worked at Sam's Town Casino, Las Vegas, as a blackjack dealer and served on their security staff.

Survivors include his parents, Richard and Leona Torkelson, of Mason City; one son, David Torkelson and his wife, Jill, of Oceanside, Calif.; two grandchildren, Andrew and Lindsay Torkelson, of Oceanside, Calif.; one brother, Michael Torkelson and his wife, Cheryl, of Tyler, Texas; two sisters, Mary Ann Torkelson, of Mason City; and Carol Klinner, of Mason City; two nieces, Dawn Klinner, of Miami, Fla.; Autumn Gradert, Ireton, Iowa; two nephews, Ricky Mayo, of Mason City; and Steven Torkelson, of Tyler, Texas.

He will be met in heaven by his maternal and paternal grandparents and a niece, Lynn Klinner.

MASON CITY — Sarah V. Aamodt, 87, of 418 S. Polk Place, died Sunday (Sept. 20, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Arne Bergland officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation was held Wednesday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. There will be additional visitation one hour prior to services today at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Sarah V. Aamodt Memorial Fund.

Sarah was born Jan. 1, 1911, in Ventura, the daughter of Hugh Michael and Mary Nell (Blakney) Jones. She attended schools in Burchinal and Garner.

Sarah married Joe Aslak Aamodt on Dec. 22, 1928, at the Trinity Lutheran parsonage by the late Rev. Oliver L.N. Wigdall. Sarah worked at Marshall and Swift for 42 years in the alteration department.

She was past president of the Marshall and Swift Union, volunteered at Mercy Hospital and was a 70-year member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Sarah is survived by two daughters, Ivedene Patten, of Cedar Rapids; and Verla Keeling, of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Connie Patten, Tom Patten, Mike Patten, Joey Keeling, Tim Patten, Dan Patten and Kevin Keeling; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert L. Jones of Mason City and Martin D. Jones of Dows; two sisters, Martha Paulson of Clear Lake and Mary Ellen Collins of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

Sarah was preceded in death by her parents; husband; triplets, two daughters and one son; two grandchildren; four brothers, Hugh, William, Charles and Jim; one son-in-law; and one sister, Florence White.

NORTHWOOD — Beatrice J. Sorenson, 84, of Northwood, died Tuesday (Sept. 22, 1998) at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998, at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Allan J. Stoa officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Beatrice J. Sorenson was born on Aug. 4, 1914, in Bristol Township, Worth County, Iowa, near Joice, the daughter of Jorgen and Bella (Brunsvold) Brunsvold.

She was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation on June 24, 1928, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Joice.

She attended and received her education in the Dahlseide Independent School in Bristol Township and graduated from Joice High School in 1929. Beatrice also attended Waldorf College in 1930 in Forest City and Hamilton Business College in Mason City, graduating in 1943.

After completing her schooling in 1943, she began working as a secretary for Breeze and Cornwell Attorneys-at-Law in Mason City, until 1947.

She was united in marriage to Szymour Sorenson on Feb. 21, 1947, in Joice. After their marriage together they farmed in the Danville Township area, rural Kensett, until their retirement in 1981, when they moved into Northwood.

She enjoyed flowers, sewing, quilting and gardening.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, Friendship Garden Club and a former member of the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett. She and her husband were former treasurers of the Elk Creek Lutheran Church. She also taught Sunday School for many years.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Szymour Sorenson of Northwood; two sons, Dale Fisher and his wife, Judy, of Story City, and Richard Fisher of Tucson, Ariz.; one grandson, David Fisher and his wife, Sonja, of Roland; two great-grandsons, Jacob and Lucas Fisher, both of Roland; one brother, Enis Brunsvold and his wife, Evelyn, of Joice; two sisters, Eunice Haugo of Lake Mills; and Ona Anderson and her husband, Arling, of Mankato, Minn.; as well as other relatives and friends.

** Howard Dale Petersen

MASON CITY — Howard Dale Petersen, a native of Mason City, Iowa, passed away on Jan. 7, 1998, in Imperial Beach, Calif., at the age of 58 years.

A memorial service, after cremation, was held in Imperial Beach. Inurnment services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 27, 1998, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with family members attending.

Howard was born and raised in Mason City, Iowa. Howard served two terms in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam and also served in the U.S. Navy and the Coast Guard.

In recent years, Howard worked in Naval Hospitals in Long Beach and San Diego, Calif.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mirna Petersen; and three brothers and four sisters, Russell, of Atlanta, Ga.; Gary, of Mason City, Iowa; Soren Jr., of Atlantic, Iowa; Elaine Baker, of Mesa, Ariz.; Donna Martin, of Atlantic, Iowa; Joanne Schuhmacher, of Lemon Grove, Calif.; and Beverly Golen, of Duluth, Minn.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Soren and Johanna Petersen; and two sisters, Helen Pinta and Jane A. Petersen.

CLEAR LAKE — Lindsey Derl Morris, 46, of Clear Lake, passed away Tuesday (Sept. 22, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Dugger-Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, with the Rev. Herm Gruis and the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.

Cremation will take place. Burial will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services on Friday.

Lindsey, the son of Derl and Betty Pals Morris, was born March 7, 1952, in the Belmond Community Hospital, Belmond, Iowa.

He attended Belmond school and graduated from Belmond High School. He attended cooking school in Mankato, Minn.

He was united in marriage with Jane Harris on June 22, 1973, in Belmond, Iowa. He worked at the Clear Lake Bakery and Keith Sanitation. He later worked at the Perkins Restaurant in Clear Lake where he has been employed for the last 10 years.

Lindsey enjoyed cooking and gardening.

He is survived by his parents, Derl and Betty Morris, of Belmond; four children, Susan and her husband, Clay; Dara, Michael and Ryan; one sister, RoxAnne and her husband, Lyman Emery, of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Kerry Morris, of Belmond and Brian Morris, of Minneapolis, Minn.; his maternal grandmother, Dena Pals, of Belmond; his paternal grandmother, Ruby Morris, of Belmond; three aunts, Evie and her husband, Bob Foss, of Belmond; Wanda and her husband, Leonard Pals, of Clear Lake; Diane and her husband, Dale Phelps, of Waterloo; various nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

BELMOND — Curtis Norman Gabrielson, 83, passed away Monday (Sept. 21, 1998) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Norman Gabrielson was born Feb. 23, 1915, in Belmond, Iowa, to Gabriel and Anna Peterson Gabrielson. The son of Norwegian immigrants was raised on a farm with his four brothers and four sisters. His love of land, farming and animals continued throughout his life. Norman grew up in the Belmond area where he attended country schools. He then moved to California where he managed a dairy farm in Glendale.

He met Marion Georgina Artiss and they were wed in 1939 in Glendale, Calif. Daughters, Constance Sue and Nancy Lee were born in 1941 and 1943 in California. The Gabrielson family returned to Belmond, where Norman farmed with his brother, Elmer, and eventually started his own farm. Daughter, Norma Jean, was born in 1948 and son, Ted Artiss, in 1949. He lost his wife Marion on March 19, 1954. Norman continued farming until 1958.

In 1958, he married Alta Lee Smith, becoming father to her children, Vicki Lee (born 1945) and James Hackett (born 1948), and Jerry Allen (born 1949). He then began management of the Fashion Farms in Meservey, Iowa.

The family moved to San Jose, Calif., in 1963, where they owned and operated three small businesses. In 1966, they moved to Redding, Calif., where Norman worked on a dairy farm, until his retirement. Alta and Norman returned to Belmond in 1980.

He is survived by his children, Nancy Lee Flanagan and her husband, Larry, of Harlan, Iowa; Norma Jean Thiel and her husband, Dick, of Las Vegas, Nev.; Ted Artiss Gabrielson and his wife, Donna, of Lake Oswego, Ore.; son-in-law, Fred Loats, of Belmond; stepsons, James Hackett Smith and his wife, Lynda, of San Ramon, Calif.; Jerry Allen Smith and Wendy, of Belmond; stepson-in-law, Jerry Soma, of Gilroy, Calif.; sisters, Elizabeth Waddington, of Belmond; Beulah Reasoner and her husband, Edward, of Belmond; and Ruby Boller and her husband, Kenneth, of Belmond; brothers, Gerhard and his wife, Marion, of Belmond; and Lester, of Des Moines; 22 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Gabrielson was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marion and mother of his four children; one daughter, Constance Sue Loats (1975); one stepdaughter, Vicki Lee Soma (1980); wife, Alta Lee (1984); grandson, Jeffrey Allen Loats (1986); sisters, Burlee Gabrielson and Ruth Boller; and brothers, Tolford and Elmer Gabrielson.

** Anita Ihnen

SHELDON — Anita Ihnen, 77, died on Wednesday (Sept. 23, 1998) at the Kavanaugh House in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Sept. 25, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Sheldon, with the Rev. Don Loots officiating. A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at the Rockwell Cemetery, Rockwell.

Visitation with the family present was from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home, Sheldon.

Anita Ihnen was born in Charles City on Nov. 14, 1920, to Hubert and Martha Oemick. She attended schools in Charles City and Wartburg College in Waverly. Following college, she worked in Waterloo for four years at the A and L Bakery in accounts receivable.

Anita married the Rev. Ontke Ihnen in 1944 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charles City. They had parishes in Wausau, Wis., Rockwell and Sheldon. Anita was an invaluable partner in ministry with her music and secretarial skills.

Together, Ontke and Anita had three children. Carla born in 1951, passed away in 1955. Craig, born 1955, resides in West Des Moines with his wife, Susan, and their three children, Megan, Courtney and Rebecca. Curt Ihnen was born in 1958 and lives in Minneapolis, Minn.

Anita is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Beatrice and Don Sharp, of Cedar Falls.

After the death of her husband in 1970, Anita worked as a teacher's aide in the Math Department of Sheldon High School. She retired in 1990. She belonged to Priscilla Circle at St. Paul Lutheran in Sheldon and volunteered many hours doing church work when she was able.

Anita was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one daughter.

Memorials may be given to the Lutheran College Student Fund and Music Department of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Sheldon, or Hospice of Central Iowa, Des Moines.

** Howard Dale Petersen

MASON CITY — Howard Dale Petersen, a native of Mason City, passed away on Jan. 7, 1998, in Imperial Beach, Calif., at the age of 58 years.

A memorial service, after cremation was held in Imperial Beach. Inurnment services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 27, 1998, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with family members attending.

Howard was born and raised in Mason City. Howard served two terms in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam and also served in the U.S. Navy and the Coast Guard.

In recent years, Howard worked in Naval Hospitals in Long Beach and San Diego, Calif.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Mirna Petersen; and three brothers and four sisters, Russell, of Atlanta; Gary, of Mason City; Soren Jr., of Atlantic; Elaine Baker, of Mesa, Ariz.; Donna Martin, of Atlantic; Joanne Schuhmacher, of Lemon Grove, Calif.; and Beverly Golen, of Duluth, Minn.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Soren and Johanna Petersen; and two sisters, Helen Pinta and Jane A. Petersen.

** Robert Modeland

FOREST CITY — Robert Modeland, 79, died Wednesday (Sept. 23, 1998) at his home in Forest City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City, with the Rev. Gary Marzolf of United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will take place at 3 p.m. Friday at Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Friday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City.

Robert Modeland was born April 23, 1919 in Boone.

He is survived by his wife, Joy Modeland, of Forest City; one son, Matt Modeland, of Woodburn, and one grandchild.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

** Al Porter

FOREST CITY — Al Porter, 93, died Thursday (Sept. 24, 1998) at the Hospice Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Congregational Church, Forest City, with the Rev. Albert Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery, Forest City.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church Monday.

Al Porter was born June 20, 1905, in Luton.

He is survived by his wife, Stella Porter, of Forest City; four sisters, Ellen Mohoney, Ethel Kelp, Dorothy McKinney, and Marie Cleaver; and one brother Francis Porter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, three sisters, and three brothers.

** Nellie M. Keegan

MASON CITY — Nellie M. Keegan, 81, of 220 Willowbrook Drive, died Wednesday (Sept. 23, 1998) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Elmwood Cemetery, 1223 S. Washington, Mason City, with the Rev. Carl Ries of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church officiating.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City. A scripture wake service will begin at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or the Newman Scholarship Fund.

Nellie M. Keegan was born Dec. 16, 1916, in Mason City, the daughter of Nick and Bessie (Swagger) Stenoff. Nellie attended Mason City schools and Mason City High School.

Nellie married Roy Georgoff in 1933 and he preceded her in death on Dec. 20, 1955. Nellie worked for Armour and Company for 26 years. Nellie married Verle "Bud" Keegan on June 18, 1962, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Mason City.

Nellie was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Bohemian Lodge, W.F.L.A. Velehrad #243. Nellie volunteered at Mercy Hospital for 12 years and also served as Auxiliary President.

Nellie loved her family, her flowers and going to antique sales.

Nellie is survived by her husband, Verle "Bud" Keegan, Mason City; her daughter, Nikki Denzel and her husband, Rick, Wichita, Kan.; her son, Roy Georgoff and his wife, Estelle, Plantation, Fla.; four granddaughters, Elizabeth Denzel, Madeira Beach, Fla., Kathryn Denzel, Wichita, Kan., Jennifer Denzel, Wichita, Kan., and Pasha Gross and her husband, Steve, Davie, Fla.; one great-granddaughter, Taylor Denzel-Davis; one sister, Rose Sonsalla and her husband, Roy, St. Louis Park, Minn.; a close friend since childhood, Jean Lofing, Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

Nellie was preceded in death by her first husband; her parents; a sister, Elise Rosinger; and a brother, Phillip Stenoff.
