NASHUA — Lawrence Rowe, 72, of 51 Bayou Drive, Nashua, died Friday (May 15, 1998) at home.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., Charles City.

** Robert Herman Gillen

MASON CITY — Robert Herman Gillen, 71, of 237 Lakeview Drive, died Thursday (May 14, 1998) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., where other arrangements are incomplete.

** Donald W. Kepley

MASON CITY — Donald W. Kepley, 82, of 24 13th St. N.E., died Friday (May 15, 1998) at the Willow Creek Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Christian Church, 318 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Richard "Rick" Eichenlaub officiating.

Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with a flag folding ceremony by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services at the church.

Other arrangements are incomplete at the funeral home.

** Nila M. Nelson

OSAGE — Nila M. Nelson, 64, of Osage, died Friday (May 15, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Memorial services will be at noon Tuesday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Inurnment will be in Svea Lutheran Cemetery at Ellsworth, Wis.

There will be no visitation. Her body was cremated. Champion Funeral Home, Osage, is in charge of arrangements.

Nila M. Nelson was born June 30, 1933, in Cambridge, Minn.

Survivors include two sons, Douglas Nelson, of Zumbro Falls, Minn., and Kert Nelson, of Fairbault, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

** David E. Hansen

CLEAR LAKE — David E. Hansen, 52, of 308 N. Third St., Clear Lake, died Wednesday (May 13, 1998) at his home.

Private services were held at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. Inurnment will be in the Buffalo Township Cemetery, Titonka.

The family suggests memorials to the David E. Hansen Memorial Fund.

David was born Nov. 28, 1945, in Cedar Falls.

Survivors include his daughter, Julie Pejsha, of Nevada; one granddaughter; his father, Beryl C. Hansen, of Clear Lake; two sisters, Pam Stewart, of Clinton, and Judy McCaslin, Mason City; and one brother, Terry Hansen, of Jenison, Mich.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

** William Richard Fields

DES MOINES — William Richard Fields, 69, of 1821 Frazier, formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Thursday (May 14, 1998) at his home.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, Des Moines.

Visitation also will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 18, 1998, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

William Richard Fields was born Aug. 22, 1928, in Mason City, Iowa, to Douglas and Ebba Fields.

He moved to Des Moines in 1957. He is a U.S. Navy veteran. He was an employee at Northwest Bell for 33 years.

He was a member of the Communication Workers of America.

He is survived by two sons, Scott Fields, of Polk City, Iowa, and Bill Fields, of Des Moines, Iowa; and three daughters, Connie Fields, of Omaha, Neb., Lisa Ferleman, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Renee Popelka, of Omaha, Neb.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Fields, and his parents.

** Lloyd Wilfred Walk

KENSETT — Lloyd Wilfred Walk, 79, of Kensett, died Thursday (May 14, 1998) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 15, 1998, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett, with the Rev. Selmer G. "Sam" Hernes officiating. There will be no visitation as his wish was to be cremated. Private family inurnment will be in the Grafton Cemetery with graveside military honors by Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post No. 6779 of Northwood.

Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, is in charge of the arrangements.

Lloyd Wilfred Walk was born on Dec. 12, 1918, in Grafton, the son of Albert E. and Gertrude (Radamaker) Walk.

He was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton. He attended and received his education in the rural schools near Grafton.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Feb. 21, 1942, at Fort Des Moines and served overseas in the South Pacific during World War II, receiving the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 13, 1945, at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

After his discharge, he came back to Grafton and worked for the Alitz Excavating Company in Mason City until his retirement in 1979.

He was united in marriage to Luetta (Schmidt) Boettcher on June 27, 1957, in LeMars, Iowa. After their marriage, they moved to Kensett in 1957.

Lloyd enjoyed fishing, hunting and working in his garden, which was his pride and joy. Lloyd also had a very special granddaughter, Staci VerBrugge.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett.

Survivors include his wife, Luetta Walk, of Kensett; four children, Denny Boettcher and his wife, Bonnie, of Litchfield, Minn.; Dick Boettcher and his wife, Betty, of Fallon, Nev.; Judy VerBrugge and her husband, Bob, of Mason City; and Bonnie Francis and her husband, Marv, of Mason City; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Fern Dalluge, of Mason City, Ruby Bork, of Clear Lake, and Betty Hall and her husband, John, of Lisbon; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Claude (Bobby), Donald and Glen (Buddy) Walk.

** Don William Harris

NORTHWOOD — Don William Harris, 73, of Northwood, died Friday (May 15, 1998) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center West, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 18, at First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Mark Bents officiating. Inurnment will be in the South Shell Rock Cemetery, rural Northwood, with graveside military honors by Our Buddies VFM Memorial Post No. 6779 in Northwood.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 99-11th St. S., Northwood, with a 6 p.m. public Masonic services by the Northern Light Masonic Lodge of Northwood. Visitation also will be one hour prior to service time Monday at the church. According to Don’s wishes, his body was cremated.

Don William Harris was born on Aug. 11, 1924, in Greene, Iowa, the son of Charles and Lena Belle (Crouse) Harris. He was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation in the Lutheran faith.

He attended and received his education in the Greene School System, graduating from Greene High School.

On May 18, 1943, he was inducted into the U.S. Navy at Clarksville, Iowa, serving overseas during World War II in the Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged on Nov. 25, 1945, in Minneapolis, Minn.

He was united in marriage to Mildred Butler on July 23, 1953, in Nevada.

In 1953, he started the Pee Wee & Midget baseball and in 1957, he built the softball field in Hurd Park.

After their marriage, the Harrises owned and operated the Circus Tap in Northwood for 12 years. In March 1958, he worked as a tax collector for the Department of Revenue for the state of Iowa until his retirement in 1988.

After his retirement, the Harrises owned and operated the Frame Shop in Northwood for eight years until his health failed. In March of this year, they moved to the Maple Court Apartments in Northwood.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Northwood; Northern Light Masonic Lodge in Northwood; and was a lifetime member of Our Buddies VFM Memorial Post No. 6779 in Northwood.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Harris, of Northwood; several nieces and nephews; and four sisters-in-law, Geneva Harris, of Charles City; Opal Tenold, of Northwood; Arlene Tenold, of Northwood; and Evelyn Helgeson, of Northwood; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons in infancy, four brothers and one sister.

** Theodore A. Rumbley

MANLY — Theodore A. Rumbley, 89, of 307 W. Elmore St., Manly, died Thursday at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bethel United Methodist Church, Manly, with the Rev. Robert Cummings officiating. Burial will be in the Manly Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St., Manly, and will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Theodore A. Rumbley was born April 14, 1909, son of Oliver A. and Sarah Maude (Burns) Rumbley. He married Evelyn Margaret Everson on Sept. 2, 1933, in Manchester.

Ted moved to Manly with his family at the age of 13 from Des Moines. He graduated from Manly High School and attended Cedar Falls Teachers College. He worked and managed Fullerton Lumber Company for 35 years, retiring in 1972.

Ted served many years on the Manly Volunteer Fire Department, the town council and the Manly School Board. He also served as the planning and zoning officer of Manly for many years.

He loved golf and was a charter member of the Pioneer Town and Country Club. He was an active member of the Bethel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Rumbley, of Manly; one son, Nolan Rumbley and his wife, Janice, Des Moines; two grandchildren, Naomi Zepeda, of Cedar Rapids, and Jon Rumbley, of Philadelphia, Pa.; two great-grandchildren, Hanna and Samuel Zepeda, both of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and five sisters.

** Donald W. Kepley

MASON CITY — Donald W. Kepley, 82, of 24 13th St. N.E., died Friday (May 15, 1998) at the Willow Creek Health Care Center.

Memorials may be given to the Donald W. Kepley Memorial Fund.

Donald W. Kepley was born Jan. 13, 1916, in Springhill, the son of George Ross and Opal (Higgens) Kepley. He came to Mason City at a young age and graduated from Mason City High School in 1933. He worked for Virgil Reid until entering the Army in 1941. He served as a mechanics instructor at Fort Benning, Ga., and saw action in Europe. Upon his return to Mason City in 1946, he returned to his job with Virgil Reid. On Feb. 28, 1946, he married June Braner on her parents’ farm near Belmond. He continued working for Virgil Reid and the Lane Brothers, retiring in 1981 after 35 years.

He served as a deacon and elder of First Christian Church in Mason City, of which he was a member for 65 years. He also was a longtime member of the American Legion Post 101 in Mason City. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing trips and especially enjoyed family vacations.

He is survived by his wife, June Kepley, of Mason City; his children, Dick and Vickie Hornbuckle of Mason City, Ross and Heidi Kepley of Chaska, Minn., and Bruce and Glenna Hansmeier of Clear Lake. Also surviving him are his beloved grandchildren, Mike and Kim Bailey, Chad and Debbie Hansmeier, and Shane Hansmeier; seven great-grandchildren, Maddison, Alex, Jake, Jonathan, Taylor, Allysa and Cassie, who brought him tears of joy. Also surviving are two brothers-in-law, Walt and Gloria Braner, and Don and Eileen Braner; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother and one son-in-law.

** Robert Herman Gillen

MASON CITY — Robert Herman Gillen, 71, of 237 Lakeview Drive, died Thursday (May 14, 1998) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Douglas Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton. The Mason City Veterans Memorial Association will conduct full military rites.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and will continue one hour prior to services at the church Monday.

Memorials may be given to the Robert Herman Gillen Memorial Fund.

Robert was born Oct. 11, 1926, in Council Bluffs, the son of Hugh James and Letitia (Gray) Gillen. He attended school in Belle Plaine. Robert served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a paratrooper.

He married Norma Steenhard on Nov. 19, 1950, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Prior to moving to Mason City, the Gillens resided in Belle Plaine, Pekin, Ill., and Tracy, Minn.

Robert was employed by Chicago Northwestern Railroad as a conductor/brakeman for 45 years, retiring in October 1987.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Seniors Investment Club, United Investment Club, Senior Citizens, Lifeline Mercy Hospital, V.F.W., American Legion, Iowa Firemen’s Association, Elderbridge, A.A.R.P., and volunteered at Kinney Pioneer Museum.

Robert is survived by his wife, Norma Gillen, of Mason City; son, David Gillen and wife, Bonnie, of Houston, Texas; daughter, Cynthia Thiesse and husband, Mark, of Olivia, Minn.; son, Richard Gillen and wife, Karleen, of Ames; daughter Cheryl Lawrence and husband, Lance, of Rogers, Ark.; son, William Gillen and wife, Leah, of Spencer; 12 grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Figgins, of Mason City; and sister-in-law, Maureen Gillen, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Hugh and Eugene.

** Minnie A. Surface

CLEAR LAKE — Minnie A. Surface, 93, of 625 14th Ave. N., died Saturday (May 16, 1998) at Good Shepherd Health Care Center, Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Robert Towner of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Mason City, officiating. A private family graveside service will be held Tuesday at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel and continue until service time.

Minnie A. Surface was born March 18, 1905, in Central City, Neb., the daughter of William E. and Sophia Jane (Yount) Gleason. She attended school in Central City, Neb., and on June 8, 1925, she married Merrill W. Surface at Grand Island, Neb. In 1945, they moved to Hastings, Neb., where they lived until 1977, when they moved to Clear Lake.

Minnie worked as a sales lady for J.M. McDonald Co., J.C. Penney, and Ed’s Pharmacy for 30 years. She enjoyed working with the public.

She was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Hastings, Neb., and also a member of Chapter 39 OES Eastern Star in Hastings.

Survivors include one grandson, Tom Lewis and his wife, Carol, of Clear Lake; one granddaughter, Patty Lewis and her husband, Jeff Bertz, of Decatur, Ill.; a son-in-law, Butch Lewis, of Clear Lake; two great-grandchildren, Jeff and Abby Lewis, both of Clear Lake; and many friends at the Meadows in Clear Lake.

She was preceded death by her parents; her husband in 1991; her daughter, Jane Lewis; five brothers and two sisters.

CLEAR LAKE — Katherine Jensen, 101, died Saturday (May 16, 1998) at the I.O.O.F. Home, Mason City.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St.

** Veronica Catherine Urdahl

MASON CITY — Veronica Catherine Urdahl, 73, of 125 14th St. N.W., died Saturday (May 16, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. David Beckman officiating. Following services, her body will be cremated. Private family inurnment will take place Wednesday at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. Monday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Veronica Urdahl Memorial Fund.

Veronica Catherine Carney was born Feb. 28, 1925, in Mason City, the third daughter of John and Veronica Carney. Veronica attended Holy Family School and worked at Jacob B. Decker & Sons. On Sept. 27, 1947, she married Rodney O. Urdahl at Holy Family Catholic Church.

Veronica enjoyed playing golf and was always interested in public affairs. A great pleasure to her were her grandchildren, Jason, Jacob, Derrick and Olivia.

Veronica is survived by two sons, Michael Urdahl, and Jay Urdahl and his wife, Kristine, all of Mason City; and four grandchildren, Jason, Jacob, Derrick and Olivia, all of Mason City; one brother, Richard Carney and his wife, JoAnne; and one sister, Bernadette Surat and her husband, John, of Britt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rodney, in 1995; a sister, Ruth Phillips; two brothers, Donald and Harold Carney; one brother, Dwayne, in infancy; and her parents, John and Veronica Carney.

ROCKWELL — Clark W. Deardeuff, 97, died Friday (May 15, 1998) at the Rockwell Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Other funeral arrangements are incomplete at the funeral home.

** Onabelle Storck

SHEFFIELD — Onabelle Storck, 88, of 603 Sherman St., died Saturday (May 16, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Grarup Funeral Home, with Sister Emily DeVine, of Mason City, officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be given to the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Onabelle Storck was born Aug. 3, 1909, in Pilot Mound, to Jacob and Lydia (Rinehart) Zunkel. She received her education in the Boone County School System. Onabelle worked in department stores in Boone, and later worked for JC Penney in Des Moines for many years.

She was united in marriage to George H. Storck on July 6, 1938, in St. George, Utah. They moved to the family farm west of Sheffield in 1940. In 1955, they moved to their present home in Sheffield. She assisted her husband in the real estate business until his death in 1984.

She was active in the Order of Eastern Star, Past Matrons Club, Methodist Church, B.P.W. Club and the B2 Study Club.

One of her special interests was in the African and North American Wildlife Museum, which she donated to the city of Sheffield in memory of her husband.

She is survived by two sisters, Arlene and Ione.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers, three sisters and nephews and nieces.

** Helen A. Gilmore

HAMPTON — Helen A. Gilmore, 90, died Saturday (May 16, 1998) at Franklin General Hospital.

Funeral services are incomplete at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

** Lawrence Rowe

NASHUA — Lawrence Rowe, 72, died Friday (May 15, 1998) at his home.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church in Nashua, with the Rev. Robert L. Spaight officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday. The St. Bernedette Circle will recite the Rosary at 3 p.m. today, and there will be a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m. today.

Lawrence Henry Rowe was born June 25, 1925, in Hammond, Ind.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Nashua; two sons, Thomas, of Rock Island, Ill., and Robert Rowe, of Red Lake, Ontario; three brothers, Edward, of Calumet City, Ill., Eugene Rowe, of Griffith, Ind., and John Rowe, of Lansing, Ill.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

** Joan L. Birch

NEW HOPE, Minn. — Joan L. Birch, 63, formerly of Mason City, died Tuesday (May 12, 1998) at home.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 22, at Olivet Baptist Church, 3415 Louisiana Ave., N., Crystal, Minn. There will be a private interment. The family will receive friends immediately following services at the church. Washburn McReavy Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to Olivet Baptist Church.

Joan Lee Birch was born Oct. 26, 1934, in Mason City. She was a retired registered nurse at Eitel Hospital, Minneapolis.

Survivors include her husband, David; son, the Rev. David L. Birch and his wife, Heather, of West Plains, Mo.; daughter, Ellen Nellermoe, and her husband, Brett, of Ramsey, Minn.; grandchildren, Nathan, Naomi and Fiona Birch, and Kalley Nellermoe; a brother, Dr. Richard L. Pitman and his family of Columbus, Ind.; and many friends.

ROCKWELL — Clark W. Deardeuff, 97, of 707 Elm St., died Friday (May 15, 1998) at the Rockwell Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson of St. James Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home, and also on Tuesday until time of services.

Clark was born July 13, 1900, in Dixon, Mo., the son of Eastman and Ida (Prater) Deardeuff. He attended schools in Missouri and moved to Iowa in 1921, working on the Mike Broers farm southwest of Mason City. Clark married Mildred Butcher on Feb. 12, 1924, in Mason City, and they began farming on a Broers farm, living there 12 years, then moving to Hanford, where they farmed until Clark's retirement in December of 1965. Following retirement, they lived near Burchinal.

Clark is survived by a son, Clarence Deardeuff and his wife, Mavis, of Mason City; and three grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren — Stan Deardeuff and his wife, Ann, of Mason City, and their children, Michael, Christopher, Matthew and Nikki; Susan Kingland and her husband, David, of Forest City, and their children, Deacon Olesen, Denise, Eric and Joseph; and Patty Stratton of Indianola and her children, Justin, Betsy and Mary. He also is survived by a sister, Mary Summa of McMinnville, Tenn.; brother-in-law, Art Butcher of Mason City; and three sisters-in-law, Edna Butcher of Rockwell and Reba Humphrey and Gladys Deardeuff, both of Dixon, Mo.

Clark was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three sisters, four brothers and one granddaughter.

** Donald W. Kepley

MASON CITY — Donald W. Kepley, 82, of 24 13th St. N.E., died Friday (May 15, 1998) at the Willow Creek Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at First Christian Church, 318 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Richard Eichenlaub officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with flag folding provided by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the Donald W. Kepley Memorial Fund.

Donald W. Kepley was born Jan. 13, 1916, in Springhill, the son of George Ross and Opal (Higgens) Kepley. He came to Mason City at a young age and graduated from Mason City High School in 1933. He worked for Virgil Reid until entering the Army in 1941. He served as a mechanics instructor at Fort Benning, Ga., and saw action in Europe.

Upon his return to Mason City in 1946, he returned to his job with Virgil Reid. On Feb. 28, 1946, he married June Braner on her parents' farm near Belmond. He continued working for Virgil Reid and the Lane Brothers, retiring in 1981 after 35 years.

He served as a deacon and elder of the First Christian Church in Mason City, of which he was a member for 65 years. He was also a longtime member of the American Legion (Post 101) in Mason City. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and fishing trips, and especially enjoyed family vacations.

He is survived by his wife, June Kepley, of Mason City; his children, Dick and Vickie Hornbuckle of Mason City, Ross and Heidi Kepley of Chaska, Minn., and Bruce and Glenna Hansmeier of Clear Lake. Also surviving him are his beloved grandchildren, Mike and Kim Bailey, Chad and Debbie Hornbuckle, Jason and Heather Hornbuckle, Chris Hornbuckle, Chris Hornbuckle, Shane and Courtney Maskarina, Brent Hansmeier and Shane Hansmeier; seven great-grandchildren, Maddison, Alex, Jake, Jonathan, Taylor, Allysa and Cassie, who brought him tears of joy. Also surviving are two brothers-in-law, Walt and Gloria Braner and Don and Eileen Braner; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother and one son-in-law.

Dorothy E. Lange was born Nov. 18, 1941, in Omaha, Neb.

Survivors include a son, Anthony Lange, and grandson, Austin Lange; a stepdaughter, Melanie Techendorf, and stepgrandchildren, Ricky, Jonathan and Ann. She also is survived by her parents, Roland and Lois Peterson, and brother, John Peterson, of Winner, S.D.; a sister, Betty Mikulas of Austin, Texas; her very special "daughter" Sonya Dolan; and very special friend, Shirley Steiger, as well as loving relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by sons, Mitchell and Jeffery Mahoney, and a sister, Lucy Walz.

Bernard E. Nolte was born Dec. 16, 1923, in Goodell, the son of Henry and Veda Nolte. He had lived in Russell for the last nine years, and prior to that he lived in Cedar Falls. He was a radio dispatcher for the Iowa Highway Patrol, a veteran of World War II, during which he was a prisoner of war, and a member of the American Legion post in Goodell, P.O.W. National and the V.F.W. in Waterloo.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise Nolte of Russell; two daughters, Mary Ann Tupper of Hampton and June Nolte-Davis of Russell; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; four stepgreat-grandchildren; one brother, George Nolte of Adams, Minn.; and one sister, Alverta Peterson of Waverly.

MASON CITY — Veronica Catherine Urdahl, 73, of 126 14th St. N.W., died Saturday (May 16, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with Father David Beckman officiating. Following services her body will be cremated. Inurnment will take place Wednesday at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation was held Monday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Veronica Urdahl Memorial Fund.

Born Veronica Catherine Carney on Feb. 28, 1925, in Mason City, the third daughter of John and Veronica Carney. Veronica attended Holy Family School and worked at Jacob B. Decker & Sons. On Sept. 27, 1947, she married Rodney O. Urdahl at Holy Family Catholic Church.

Veronica enjoyed playing golf and was always interested in public affairs. A great pleasure to her were her grandchildren, Jason, Jacob, Derrick and Olivia.

Veronica is survived by two sons, Michael Urdahl, and Jay Urdahl and his wife, Kristine, all of Mason City; and four grandchildren, Jason, Jacob, Derrick and Olivia, all of Mason City; one brother, Richard Carney and his wife, JoAnne; and one sister, Bernadette Surat and her husband, John, of Britt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rodney, in 1995; a sister, Ruth Phillips; two brothers, Donald and Harold Carney; one brother Dwayne, in infancy; and her parents, John and Veronica Carney.

Quinten G. Fangman was born Oct. 31, 1911, at Bancroft, the son of Frank and Josephine (Willenberg) Fangman. He attended St. John's School in Bancroft.

He was married to Lucille Vaske in Bancroft, on Jan. 31, 1939.

After their marriage, they farmed near Bancroft until moving to near Elma in 1954 where they continued farming until retiring in 1971. They moved to Elma in 1972. They became the parents of nine children.

Quinten was active in his church, was a former City council member and was presently active in the Elma Senior Citizens Club. He was a 50-year member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Quinten is survived by four sons, Kenneth and his wife, Janice, of Elma; Jim and his wife, Carol, of Cumberland, Wis.; Dave, of Elma; and Vince and his wife, Sally, of Pine Island, Minn.; three daughters, Marge Ludwig, of Elma; Donna Fitzgerald and her husband, Jerry, of Elma; and Mary Hanson, of Ventura; 23 grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Gert Vaske, and one brother, Rudy Vaske, both of Bancroft.

** Louis F. Schleuger

BRITT — Louis F. Schleuger, 88, of Britt, died Sunday (May 17, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church in Britt, with the Rev. James A. Mattson, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home, 178 First Ave. S.W., Britt.

Louis Frank Schleuger, the son of Russian-German immigrants, Louis Martin and Katherine Elizabeth (Weitzel) Schleuger, was born March 14, 1910 at Herrington, Kan.

He was baptized on April 17, 1910 by Pastor Wilhelm von Hennings at the Herrington Lutheran Church.

At an early age, he moved with this family to a farm near Goldfield, Iowa. In 1919, they moved to a farm near Woden and in 1927, to a farm near Britt. Louis attended country schools at Goldfield and Woden.

In 1929, he began working for the Rock Island Railroad at Herrington, Kan.

On Nov. 21, 1934, he was married to Eva Helen Charbonneaux, of Britt, by the Rev. William Spence at the Methodist Parsonage n Mason City. They made their home in Britt.

Louis was a machinery operator in construction work at defense jobs, during world War II, at Burlington, Iowa; Baraboo, Wis.; Hastings, Neb.; Montgomery, Minn.; and the Algona, Iowa prison camp.

He was a night mechanic at the Hemp Plant in Britt and was a heavy equipment operator for Hancock County for 28 years, retiring in 1973. Louis also delivered motor homes for Winnebago Industries from the plant to dealers for three years.

His hobbies included fishing, hunting, woodworking, gardening and reading.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, was the founder of the Hobo Day Flea Market in Britt and was its organizer and manager the first year.

He was a life member of the Hancock County Historical Society and was also a charter and honorary member of the Iowa State Sheriffs and Deputies Association Institute.

He is survived by his wife, Eva, of Britt; four children, Katherine L. Schleuger, of Britt; Louis Schleuger Jr. and his wife, Sanae, of Yokosuka, Japan; Lucy Ann Anderson and her husband, Gary, of Forest City; and Shirley Daugard, of Madison, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Dennis Teachout Jr. and his wife, Kari, of Mankato, Minn.; Lucy Schleuger, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; Lous Schleuger III, of Charlotte, N.C., Ginger Nielsen and her husband, Dean, of Britt, and Neil Daugard, of Britt; several stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren, Aaron Davies, of Mankato, Minn., and Brandon, Melissa and Amber Smith, all of Washington; several stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Marie Schleuger of Britt and Marie Schleuger, of Bemidji, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

Dolly was born Feb. 22, 1934 at Mason City, the daughter of Joseph and Bonnie (White) Kloberdanz. She attended Mason City schools, prior to marrying Robert Cottrell in 1951 in Mason City.

Dolly was an avid reader, a staunch Democrat, a sports enthusiast, and loved music, nature and most of all comforting, supporting, and providing endless love to her family. She was the kindest of persons. We will all miss her.

** Gertrude Sprengeler

SANTA MARIA, Calif. — Gertrude Sprengeler, 89, of Santa Maria, Calif., passed away April 30, 1998, in a Santa Maria hospital from complications of surgery after a fall 10 days earlier.

Memorial services were held May 7 at Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Santa Maria.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 26, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the Braille Institute, 2031 De la Vina, Santa Barbara, Calif. 93105.

Gertrude Elise Sprengeler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Luebbert, was born July 12, 1908, in Brownton, Minn. After graduating from Brownton High School, she attended teacher's college in Glencoe and taught country school for several years.

In 1934 she married Edwin J. Sprengeler. They moved to Mason City in 1938, where he was in the building supply business.

Most of her adult life was spent in Mason City. She was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. She served as a Gray Lady during World War II and was involved in many charitable organizations.

In addition to their home in Mason City, the Sprengelers also resided in Spicer, Minn., and Scottsdale, Ariz.

In 1981, they relocated to California to be near their daughter and three grandchildren. There Mrs. Sprengeler attended and was active in the Lutheran Church of Our Savior.

She spent the last five years living at a retirement home, Maria del Sol in Santa Maria, and more recently with her daughter in Pismo Beach, Calif.

Surviving is her daughter, Virginia S. Croly; three grandchildren, Eric John Croly, Gregory Mark Croly and Myrna Anne (Croly) Tuck; and four great-granddaughters, Sondra Lynn Croly, Amelia Marie Croly, Bailey Marie Tuck and Shelby Rae Tuck, all of Santa Maria, Calif.

Mrs. Sprengeler was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Myrna Marie Sprengeler; her parents; two brothers; and four sisters.

** Audrey Pennington

CHARLES CITY — Audrey Pennington, 96, of 1627 Beaumont Ave., died Tuesday (May 19, 1998) at home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., Charles City, with the Rev. J. Larry Vallery, pastor of the Trinity United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Deerfield Cemetery, rural Chickasaw County.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home, and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Friday.

Audrey Pearl Gillsbeck Pennington was born Nov. 6, 1901, in rural Charles City.

Survivors include one daughter, Joyce Cavanaugh, of Charles City; one son, Gordon Pennington, of St. Louis, Mo.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister.

ROCKWELL — Mary S. Witte, 97, of Rockwell, died Tuesday (May 19, 1998) at the Rockwell Community Care Center.

Funeral services are tentatively planned for 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 22, 1998, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Rockwell.

Visitation will begin after 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, Rockwell, where other arrangements are incomplete.

** Nancy Ganseveld

BRITT — Nancy Ganseveld, 81, died Monday (May 18, 1998) at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, Britt, with the Rev. Stephen Bibb officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, and one hour prior to services at the chapel.

Nancy Ganseveld was born Feb. 18, 1917, in Britt.

Survivors include one sister, Jennie Ganseveld of Britt.

She was preceded in death by her parents, nine brothers and five sisters.

THOMPSON — Jensine Kloppen, 97, died Tuesday (May 19, 1998) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

BUFFALO CENTER — Gertie Boehm, 101, died Monday (May 18, 1998) at Timely Mission Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Reformed Church.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Winter Home, where other arrangements are incomplete.

** Sally A. Burdick

CLEAR LAKE — Sally A. Burdick, 94, of Clear Lake, Iowa died Saturday (April 11, 1998) at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at t he Clear Lake United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.

Ward-Van Slyke Funeral Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, is in charge of arrangements.

Sally was born July 26, 1903, in Bergen, Norway, the daughter of Lars and Anna Marie (Bertelson) Anderson. She came to America at the age of 4.

Sally lived in Mason City until 1965, then she moved to Clear Lake. In 1980 she resided with her daughter, Barbara Ransom and her husband, Jim.

Sally once owned a restaurant in Mason City, known as Sally's Cafe; she was noted for great coconut cream pies.

Sally is survived by her son-in-law, Jim Ransom, of Clear Lake, Iowa; daughter, Bonnie Fazano, of East Liverpool, Ohio; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers; two sisters; her daughter, Barbara Ransom; and three husbands.

** Claude Henry Lucas

HARLINGEN, Texas — Claude Henry Lucas left us on Saturday, May 9, 1998, to join his beloved wife of almost 70 years. Ora Belle passed away Dec. 19, 1990.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on June 1, 1998, at Ashcroft-Buck-Funeral Home, Harlington, Texas.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30, 1998, at the First United Methodist Church, in Nora Springs, Iowa, with the Rev. Richard Pippert officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Plymouth next to Ora Belle.

Claude was born to James and Laura Lucas on March 20, 1900, in Osage.

He was married on March 2, 1921, to Ora Belle Cheesebro in Plymouth, Iowa.

Claude was a dairy and grain farmer in the Nora Springs area for many years. He retired to the Harlingen, Texas, area in 1976.

Claude is survived by one son, Harlan Lucas and his wife, Betty, with whom he had been residing; seven grandchildren, Mike Lucas and his wife, Donna, of Cedar Falls, Marty Lucas, and his wife, Mary, of Charles City; Marcie Jones, of Iowa; Karla Bridgewater and her husband, Steve, of Vinton, Iowa; Debra Peterson and her husband, Dean, of Harlingen, Texas; David Shelton, of Marshalltown, Iowa; and Douglas Shelton, of Harlingen, Texas; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

LAKE MILLS — Betty J. Hill, 63, died Tuesday at North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Mittelstadt Funeral Home.

** Viola Cooley

LAKE MILLS — Viola Cooley, 86, of Lake Mills, died Monday (May 18, 1998) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Salem Lutheran Church Chapel, with the Rev. Sara Beth Akre officiating. Interment will be held at Oakland Cemetery, Forest City.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Thursday, at the Salem Lutheran Church Chapel.

Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, is in charge of arrangements.

Viola Cooley was born Aug. 3, 1911, on the family farm near Lake Mills.

She is survived by one son, Lee Cooley, of Mason City; seven grandsons; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Don Twito, of Lake Mills; three sisters, Fern Hegel, of Lake Mills, Mildred Groves, of Forest City, and Myrtle Lammers, of Corydon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, one daughter and one granddaughter.

** Roland Kollasch

BANCROFT — Roland "Pete" Kollasch, 79, of Bancroft, died Monday (May 18, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Thomas officiating. Burial will be at St. John Cemetery, with military honors by the Bancroft American Legion Post.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 until 9 p.m. Thursday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft, with a 3 p.m. Rosary and a 7:30 p.m. prayer service.

Pete was born Jan. 18, 1919, in rural Bancroft.

Survivors include his wife, Amanda, of Bancroft; four sons; James Kollasch, of Mt. Laurel, N.J., Roger Kollasch, of Olathe, Kan., William Kollasch, of Olathe, Kan., and Steven Kollasch, of Clive; three daughters, Nancy Overlie, of Orlando, Fla., Beverly Fynboh, of Alexandria, Minn., and Marilyn Vaske, of Bancroft; 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers, Paul Kollasch, of Lakota, Richard Kollasch, of Fruita, Colo;., Donald Kollasch, of Shakopee, Minn., and Edgar Kollasch, of Bancroft; three sisters, Cornelia Cogley and Joyce Droessler, both of Bancroft, and Mildred Vogel, of Burt.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

** Mona Melrose

CHARLES CITY — Mona Melrose, 102, a former resident of 901 Court St., died Monday (May 18, 1998) at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, 1998, at the First Congregational Church, Charles City, with the Rev. Jack Ivey officiating. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery.

Mona May Kies Melrose was born May 1, 1896, on a farm near Cambridge, Iowa.

Survivors include three children, Mona Altiery, of Honolulu, Hawaii; Andy Melrose, of Charles City; and Nancy Albertson, of Iowa City; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and a grandchild.
