** Robert H. Frenz

MASON CITY — Robert H. Frenz, 66, of 952 14th Place N.E., died Saturday (May 2, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East, after being diagnosed with cancer four weeks ago.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S. E., with the Rev. David Anderson, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with full military rites by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation was held on Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. and will also be held one hour prior to services today at the church.

Bob was born Oct. 24, 1931, in Cartersville, the son of Harry and Melinda (Hansen) Frenz. He attended schools in the Nora Springs and Rockford area.

Bob served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Munich, Germany.

He married Ella Lewerke Jan. 26, 1957, in Woden, Iowa.

Bob worked for Hewett Wholesale for 37 years as a sales manager retiring in 1994. He then worked parttime for Wayne Erland.

Bob was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and the V.F.W. He enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Northern Minnesota, boating, fishing, wildlife and was an avid Minnesota Viking fan.

His survivors include his wife, Ella Frenz, of Mason City; his son, Robert A. Frenz, of Mason City; daughters, Cindy Mueller and her husband, Dan, of Burlington, Wis., and Penny Frenz Thornton and James, of Mason City; granddaughter, Brook Frenz, of Mason City; sisters, Bonnie Frenz, of Portland, Iowa; Juanita Downs, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; Evelyn Donovan and her husband, Fred, of Mason City; Betty Johnson and her husband, Ted, of LuVerne, and Linda Redenius and her husband, Elwin, of Britt, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

** George Philipp Wemken

MANLY — George Philipp Wemken, 86, of Manly, died Monday (May 4, 1998) at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday (May 8, 1998) at the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly with Rev. Robert Cumings officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 18 West, Mason City.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to service time on Friday at the church.

The family of George Philipp Wemken has requested that memorial contributions be made in his memory.

George Philipp Wemken was born on Aug. 5, 1911, in Worth County, Iowa, near Manly, the son of John and Anna (Seuser) Wemken.

He attended and received his education in the rural Danville Township School system. After completing his schooling he helped his family on the farm.

He was united to Marie McCoid on Dec. 1, 1934, in Manly; and had celebrated 63 years of marriage. After their marriage, together they farmed five miles southwest of Manly in the Danville Township area where he farmed all of his life, moving to Manly in 1973 and then retiring from farming in 1974. After his retirement, he helped his nephew, Norman Backhaus, on his farm near Manly.

George loved to farm and he also enjoyed fishing.

He was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly, and had served on the Worth County Election Board and the Worth County Fair Board for many years.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Marie Wemken, of Manly; 16 nieces and nephews; two brothers-in-law, Raymond McCoid and his wife, Eleanor, of Mason City, and Art McCoid and his wife, Adeline, of Sun City, Calif.; and several cousins as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Charles Wemken; two sisters, Lena Mae Backhaus and Minnie Johnson; and one niece, Phyllis Herberg.

** Karen Jane Keller

CEDAR FALLS — Karen Jane Keller, 58, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Mason City, died Tuesday (April 28, 1998) at her home, of natural causes.

Memorial services are planned for a later date at St. Johns Episcopal Church in Mason City. Inurnment will occur at that time in the church columbarium.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Richardson Funeral Home, Cedar Falls, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born Oct. 14, 1939, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of William K. and Lena M. (Thomas) Badke. She had been employed as office manager at Mid-America Dental in Waterloo until 1995.

Ms. Keller is survived by a sister, M. Jean Porro, of Reinbeck, Iowa; three brothers, Richard Badke, of Kasson, Minn., Thomas Badke, of Dover, Minn., and Jay Badke, of Mason City, Iowa.

** Mabel F. Held

MASON CITY — Mabel F. Held, 94, of 2777 Leisure World, Mesa, Ariz. 85206, formerly of Mason City and Nora Springs, died Friday (May 1, 1998) at Chula Vista Care Center, Mason City.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, with the Rev. Richard Pippert, of the United Methodist Church, Nora Springs, officiating.

Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. Thursday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

Mabel R. Held was born Dec. 23, 1903, in Dumont, Iowa, to Lynn and Martha Mae (Sheppard) Woodley. She attended school in Hansel.

She married Lloyd C. Held on Oct. 9, 1923, at the Sheffield Evangelical Parsonage. In 1940, they started farming near Nora Springs until they moved into Nora Springs in 1954.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and very active in the church circle, the Garden Club and the Odd Fellows. In 1991 she moved to Arizona.

She is survived by three sons, William L. Held and his wife, Alta Mae, of Warsaw, Mo., Thomas L. Held and his wife, Letty, of Berwyn, Ill., and David D. Held and his wife, Dorothy, of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Virginia Doty and her husband, Lee, of Mesa, Ariz., and Darlene C. Held, of Mesa, Ariz.; five grandchildren; six great-grand-children; and one sister, Helen Haugen, of Osage, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lloyd, in 1993; one brother; and two sisters.

** Marcia A. Root

LATIMER — Marcia A. Root, 75, died Monday (May 4, 1998) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Immanuel United Church of Christ, Latimer, with the Rev. James Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Alexander Cemetery, Alexander.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home, Latimer, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Marcia was born June 15, 1922, in Franklin County.

Survivors include her husband, Leonard, of Latimer; one son, Leon Root, of Latimer; and one daughter, Charlotte Plagge, of Montevideo, Minn.; seven grandchildren; and one brother, Jim Boylan, of Clinton.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

** Larry L. Smith

SCARVILLE — Larry L. Smith, 53, of Scarville, died Tuesday (May 5, 1998) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Scarville, with the Rev. Randy Baldwin officiating. Interment will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Scarville.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Survivors include his three children, Dustin Smith, of Ames; Samantha O'Hara, of Cedar Falls; and Patricia Smith, of Scarville; and his parents, Harold and Donnabelle Smith, of Scarville.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

** Melvin McAlpine

BELMOND — Melvin McAlpine, 84, of Belmond, died Monday (May 4, 1998) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Church of Rowan, with the Rev. JoAn Lent Skyrme officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Melvin McAlpine was born Oct. 5, 1913, south of Belmond.

Survivors include two sons, Larry McAlpine, of Manning, and Rex McAlpine, of Brandenberg, Ky.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sisters and two brothers.

** Clarence W. Ring

RICEVILLE — Clarence W. Ring, 88, of Riceville, died Monday (May 4, 1998) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Peters Lutheran Church, Riceville, with the Rev. Matthew Versemann officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Vistitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Conway Funeral Home with a 5 p.m. prayer service, and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Clarence W. Ring was born April 12, 1910, at Riceville.

Survivors include one son, William, of Manly; one daughter, Linda Kinneman, of Riceville; two stepsons, Richard Jones, of Lodi, Wis., and Thomas Jones, of Guam, U.S.A.; one stepdaughter, Beverly Valencia, of Waukegan, Ill.; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, two stepchildren, five brothers and three sisters.

** Henry Eden

MASON CITY — Henry Eden, 87, formerly of 821 Sixth St. S.W., Mason City, died Wednesday (May 6, 1998) at the Willow Creek Healthcare Center.

Henry was born on July 27, 1910, at Titonka, Iowa, the son of Enno and Lena (Sthor) Eden. He attended school in Titonka and then moved to Clear Lake in 1934.

In 1939, he moved to Mason City. For 27 years he was employed in several positions with Mason City Iron. He retired in 1984.

He was married to Junella Burgess in September 1929, to which one son was born. Following her death, he married Lorraine Eden in May of 1972. Following her death, he was united in marriage to Mollie Groh on July 27, 1979.

Henry spent time living in Davenport with his wife and step-daughter until ill health brought him back to Mason City, where he lived with his son until moving to the care center.

Henry was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and enjoyed taking trips to Mesquakee, spending time outdoors and bowling.

Henry is survived by his wife, Mollie Eden, Davenport; one son, Jim and his wife Miriam Eden, Mason City; three sisters, Clara and her husband Leonard Nelson, Mason City; Vera Ossness, Los Angeles, Calif.; and Lorraine Rooks, Clear Lake; three grandsons; and six great grandchildren.

Henry was proceeded in death by his previous wives, Junella in January of 1972; Lorraine, in April of 1978; his grandson, James "Scott" Eden; his parents; one brother, Geerd; and one sister, Carol Tool.

No services are planned at this time. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Henry Eden Memorial Fund.

Cremation was at Memorial Park Crematory. Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

BELMOND — Memorial services for Verna L. Riggs, 95, of Belmond will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Belmond, with the Rev. Ken Fineran officiating. Inurnment will be in Forest Memorial Cemetery, Forest City, Ark.

Verna L. Riggs died on Thursday, Nov. 20, 1997, at the Belmond Community Hospital.

TITONKA — John Isebrand, 91, of Titonka, died Wednesday (May 6, 1998) at the Titonka Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Timm Wilkin officiating. Burial will be in the Buffalo Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Titonka.

John Isebrand was born Oct. 14, 1906, in rural Steamboat Rock.

Survivors include his wife, Anna, Titonka; his children, Delores Johnston, of Apache Junction, Ariz.; Harvey Isebrand, of Titonka; Joyce Ibsen, of Cedar Rapids; and Jim Isebrand, of Newton; 15 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Orval Isebrand, of Mason City, and Clarence Isebrands, of Titonka; and one sister, Ann Bentley, Eugene, Ore.

John was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and two brothers.

** Mildred K. Simon

ROCKWELL — Mildred K. Simon, 94, of Rockwell, died Wednesday evening (May 6, 1998) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 Third St. S., Rockwell, with the Rev. Louie Bram, of First Baptist Church in Rockwell, officiating. Interment will be at the Rockwell Cemetery.

Visitation will begin after 3 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Mildred Simon memorial fund.

Mildred was born on Dec. 14, 1903, the daughter of Frank and Sara Jane "Clark" Reineke at Oakland, Iowa.

In 1919, she traveled with her family in a covered wagon to the Rockwell area from southern Iowa. She attended school near Oakland and then took her nurses training at the Story Hospital. She was employed as a nurse at the Rockwell Hospital and later the nursing home. She continued her nursing career until she retired at 75.

Mildred and her husband, Clarence Simon, were united in marriage at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on May 29, 1939. To this 45-year marriage, one son was born.

She was an active member of First Baptist Church. She loved to fish at their cabin at Jefferson Lake, Minn., spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, bird watching, tending her flowers, creating beautiful pieces of crochet and ceramic work, reading mystery novels, playing "500" up to the day she had her stroke and the Aggravation board game.

She also was a member of the Audubon, Women's, and Cemetery Societies and Senior Citizens.

Mildred is survived by her only son, David and his wife, Cathy Simon, Clear Lake; two sisters, Gladys Wearda and Geneva Cahalan and one brother-in-law, George Simon, all of Rockwell; two grandchildren, Tracie and her husband, Roy Penning, Riceville, and Chris and his wife, Paula Simon, Montour, Iowa; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence, in 1984; one sister, Bonnie Simon; and two brothers, Frank and Bruce Reineke.

** Walter C. "Cookie" Cookman

CLEAR LAKE — Walter C. "Cookie" Cookman, 81, of 1908 N. Eighth Place, died Thursday (May 7, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

ALGONA — Tracy R. Rusher, 33, of 308 N. Harlan, died Wednesday (May 6, 1998) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Algona High School Gymnasium, with Gary Holmes officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona.

Tracy R. Rusher was born Dec. 1, 1964, in Tucson, Ariz.

Survivors include her husband, Dan Rusher, of Algona; her parents, Simplicio and Marsha Cerizo; two sisters, Lisa Healey, of Stewartville, Minn., and Nichole Heye, of Omaha, Neb.; and one brother, Michael Cerizo, of Storm Lake.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

** Marie Emily Bryan

DOWS — Marie Emily Bryan, 88, died Wednesday (May 6, 1998) at the Dows Health Care Center where she had resided since June 24, 1995.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Dows with the Rev. James R. Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Dows.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elledge Funeral Home in Dows.

Marie Emily Bryan was born March 28, 1910, on a farm near Dows, to William and Harriet (Fuller) Leach.

Marie attended rural Dows schools and graduated from Dows High School in 1927. She received her normal teaching certificate from Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls and taught in rural schools in Wright and Franklin counties for eight years.

On May 27, 1936, she was united in marriage to Glen W. Bryan at Mason City. After their marriage, they farmed in the Dows and Williams area for 50 years, retiring in 1964, and in 1987, they moved to Dows.

Her husband died on Dec. 13, 1988.

She was a member of Dows United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Ruth Circle, Senior Citizens and the Blaine Friendship Club.

Marie is survived by one step-daughter, VaDonna Pell, of Brazil, Ind.; one step-daughter-in-law, Lois Bryan, of Garner; seven step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, one sister and one step-son, Harold Bryan.

** Traci L. Childers Rusher

ALGONA — Traci L. Childers Rusher, 30, of 620 N. Hall St., died Wednesday (May 6, 1998) in rural Algona.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Algona High School Gymnasium. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona.

Traci L. Childers Rusher was born April 19, 1968, in Mason City.

Survivors include her husband, David Rusher, of Algona; parents, Roger and Marjorie Childers, of Algona; two brothers, Randy Childers, of Bettendorf, and Scott Childers, of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

** Thelma M. Jellum

OSAGE — Thelma Marie Jellum, 92, of Osage, died Wednesday (May 6, 1998) at the Faith Lutheran Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage.

Thelma Marie Jellum was born April 7, 1906, in the Meroa area in rural Osage.

Survivors include one daughter, Loras Goddard, of Minneapolis, Minn.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one son.

** Loyd Willard Hansen

MASON CITY — Loyd Willard Hansen, 83, of Mason City, passed away Wednesday (May 6, 1998) at Columbia Medical Center, Arlington, Texas.

A funeral Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Private family visitation will be held at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with a public scriptural wake service held at 7 p.m.

Loyd Willard Hansen was born April 19, 1915, at Falls Township, Cerro Gordo County, the son of Carl and Barbara (Dedina) Hansen. He graduated with honors from Rock Falls High School in 1932 and later graduated from Hamilton’s Business College.

During World War II, he was a U.S. Navy Seal and later he was in the National Guard for six years.

Loyd married Maybelle Snopek on Nov. 27, 1937, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manly.

He was employed by Cerro Gordo County for 20 years and retired from First Miss. Fertilizer Plant in 1980. He and his wife traveled in their motor home for many years prior to spending winters in Arizona at their home in Apache Junction. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Marbelle Hansen, Mason City; four children, Terry DeBoom and her husband, Denny, Arlington, Texas, JoDee Martin and her husband, Lincoln, Muscatine, Gary Hansen, Aurora, Colo., and Marilyn Hyde and her husband, Robert, Rock Falls; eight grandchildren, Lee and Ross DeBoom, Beth Martin, Christy and Corene Hansen, Brenda Wernet, Angeleen Marshall and Randall Hyde; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lorraine Weller, Rock Falls.

Loyd was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Leroy.

** Jay Thomas Allen

SEATTLE, Wash. — Jay Thomas Allen, 63, of Seattle, Wash, a former Mason City, Iowa, resident, died Wednesday (May 6, 1998) in Seattle, following a lengthy illness.

He was the son of Wallace and Dorothy M. Allen of Mason City.

Jay graduated from Mason City High School and Mason City Junior College and also the University of Iowa. He received a doctorate degree in religion from Syracuse University. He was a professor of religion with tenure at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, from 1966 to 1978.

He moved to Seattle, Wash., where he was married to Cynthia Johnson.

He is survived by his wife, Cynthia; three sons, Monte, of Bronx, N.Y., Marc and Nathan, a daughter, Nicole, of Seattle, Wash.; two sisters, Sandra Ridenour and her husband, Joe, of Morgantown, Ind., and Julie Ballandby and her husband, Richard, of Iowa City; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Richer, of Albany, N.Y.

** Clara 'Swanie' Johnson

ALBERT LEA, Minn. — Memorial services for Clara "Swanie" Johnson, 95, of Thorne Crest Retirement Center, Albert Lea, Minn., will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Thorne Crest Chapel with the Rev. Milton Ost officiating.

There will be no visitation. Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Swanie died Thursday (May 7, 1998) at Naeve Hospital.

Clara Astelle Johnson was born Oct. 14, 1902, in Big Woods Township in Marshall County, Minn., the daughter of Martinus and Anna (Dalen) Swanson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Big Woods Lutheran Church.

Clara graduated from Central High School in Grand Forks, N.D., in 1921 and from the University of North Dakota in 1924, with a bachelor of arts degree in education. She taught high school English, directed plays and coached speech at Mohall, Egeland and Larimore schools in North Dakota. In Egeland and Larimore, she also served as high school principal for part of her tenure.

In 1936, she was united in marriage to Arnold T. Johnson. In 1940, they moved from Larimore to Stephen, Minn., where they owned and operated the Arnold & Co. department store until 1969 when they retired. In 1972, they moved to McAllen, Texas, and lived there until 1982, when they moved to Thorne Crest Retirement Center in Albert Lea, Minn.

Swanie sang in the choir and a women's trio for many years and was active in the Ladies Aid and church circles. She also taught Sunday school and released time classes. Swanie also was active in Girl Scouting, the Federated Women's Club, Eastern Star and she served on the Stephen School Board.

Survivors include her daughter, Leah and her husband, Neil Boyd, of Forest City, Iowa; grandsons, Brent Arnold Boyd, of Spokane, Wash., and Ryan Neil Boyd, of Forest City; one sister-in-law, Lulu Johnson, of Mayville, N.D.; and many dear nieces and nephews.

Swanie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arnold T., in 1984; one sister, Mabel Fjeld; three brothers, Anton, Joseph and Oscar Swanson; brothers-in-law, Martin Fjeld and Earl Johnson; sisters-in-law, Selma, Alpha and Helene Swanson, Lil Ramsted, Pearl Thibodeau, Mae (Glen) Rogers and Ruth V. Johnson.

CLEAR LAKE — Mrs. Gladys A. Froiland, 79, of 625 14th Ave. N., died Wednesday (May 6, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Billy Graham, KJLY Radio, Blue Earth, Minn., or to Hospice of North Iowa.

Gladys was born Feb. 22, 1919, in Stevens, Iowa, the daughter of Lars G. and Erna (Nelson) Nelson. She attended school in Elmore High School and then graduated from North Iowa Area Community College in the nurses training program with a LPN degree.

Gladys married Torger Froiland Feb. 22, 1938, in Elmore, Minn. They lived in Elmore, Cylinder and then moved to Clear Lake in 1940. She worked for Ritter’s Nursing Home, Clear Lake; Park Hospital, Mason City; Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake, and then St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City for 10 years, retiring in 1984.

Gladys was always concerned about taking care of people and was a very dedicated person. She was appropriately named, as she made people glad.

Gladys had her own cookbook, which she enjoyed making homemade pies and bread from, gardening and reading. She liked listening to missionaries that came to Zion to speak and taught Sunday school for many years at Zion. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Gladys is survived by a son, Norman Froiland and his wife, Sharon, Fertile, Iowa; and one daughter, Eleanor Andrews and her husband, Bill, Wells, Maine; one sister, Lillie Ziegler, Elmore, Minn.; three grandchildren, Robert Froiland and his wife, Penny, Ventura, Iowa, Robin Froiland and his wife, Lynettee, Omaha, Neb., and Richard Froiland and his wife, Sandra, Clear Lake, Iowa; eight great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Emil Froiland and his wife, Florence, Emmetsburg, Iowa; and three sisters-in-law, Jennie Nelson, Britt, Iowa, Margit Pallesen and Berit Nilsen, both of Stavanger, Norway.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1986; and one brother, Leif Nelson.

CHARLES CITY — Anthony F. Schmalen, 61, of 200 B St., died Friday (May 8, 1998) at home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek, officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, with a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with the family greeting friends from 4 to 8 p.m. There will be a rosary by St. Catherines Circle at 3 p.m. and a parish scripture service at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. There will be additional visitation one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the church.

Anthony Francis Schmalen was born May 12, 1936, in Charles City.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Charles City; two daughters, Brenda Johansen, of Latimer, and Elizabeth Schmalen, of Coralville; one son, Tony Schmalen Jr. of Sioux Falls, S.D.; four grandchildren; one brother, Bernard Schmalen, of Belvidere, Ill.; and two sisters, Kathryn Hartogh, of Charles City, and Theresa Dobbs, of Charles City.

** Walter C. 'Cookie' Cookman

CLEAR LAKE — Walter C. "Cookie" Cookman, 81, of 1908 N. Eighth Place, Clear Lake, died Thursday (May 7, 1998) at the Muse Norris Hospice Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Patricks' Catholic Church, Clear Lake, with the Monsignor Joseph Slepicka, officiating. Inurnment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with a 7 p.m. Scriptural wake service.

Walter was born Oct. 26, 1916 on the Cookman farm, south of Clear Lake, to Floyd and Gertrude Cookman. The family moved to town when he was 4 years old. He attended the Clear Lake Schools and graduated in 1935. Following graduation, he worked for Pease The Clothier.

He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1942. He graduated from Tulsa School of Aeronautics, as a Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945. He took his dry cleaning training, under the GI Bill with Neal The Cleaners.

He married Cleo Hurd on June 14, 1947 in Superior, Wis.

On March 1, 1958, he purchased the former Lustre Cleaners which he and his wife owned and operated until they lost their lease in March of 1973. They then purchased the Mobile Pillow Cleaning Service and worked until 1983, when he retired because of health problems.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the American Legion, and former member of the Chamber of Commerce, and long-time member of the Noon Lion's Club.

He and his wife wintered the past 15 winters in Bartow, Fla. His hobby was raising and riding his Arabian horses. He was a very loving husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed sports and liked playing tennis.

Walter is survived by his wife, Cleo Cookman, of Clear Lake; four daughters, Janaan McGinness and her husband, Ed, parents of Jeff and Angie, of Iowa City; Cheryl Ferguson and her husband, Ken, of Spirit Lake, parents of Rachel Lupardus and her husband, Jeff, Renee Quance and her husband, Chris, Robin Ferguson, and Ryan Ferguson; Luann Mehan and her husband, Bob, Milford, Iowa, parents of Janette and Jared Mehan; and Maureen Butcher and her husband, Ken, of Ankeny, Iowa, parents of Nicole Ritland and her husband, Karl, Michelle Butcher, and Brian Butcher; two nephews, Jon Hurd, Superior, Wis., and Jim Markussen, Cedar Falls, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harold Cookman in World War II; and a sister, Elise Markussen.

** Dorothy May Blackbourn

MASON CITY — Dorothy May Blackbourn, 89, of 210 14th St. N.E., died Thursday (May 7, 1998) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, with the Rev. John Gannett of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating.

There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the Humane Society of North Iowa in her memory.

Dorothy May Blackbourn was born March 13, 1909, the daughter of Frank and Ida (Strebe) Provinski in Abbotsford, Wis. Dorothy attended country school in Wisconsin.

She was married to Frank E. Blackbourn on Nov. 22, 1935 in Cassville, Wis. They moved to Mason City in 1936.

Dorothy was a homemaker and enjoyed poetry, making scrapbooks, her cats and taking care of the neighborhood cats.

Survivors include her husband, Frank Blackbourn, Mason City; one son, Robert A. Blackbourn, Wilmington, Calif.; two grandchildren, Erin Blackbourn, Urbandale, Iowa, and Kelly Blackbourn, Decorah, Iowa.

** Loyd Willard Hansen

MASON CITY — Loyd Willard Hansen, 83, of Mason City, passed away Wednesday (May 6, 1998) at Columbia Medical Center, Arlington, Texas.

A funeral Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Falls Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Private family visitation was held at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third Street N.E., with a public scriptural wake service held at 7 p.m.

Loyd Willard Hansen was born April 19, 1915, at Falls Township, Cerro Gordo County, the son of Carl and Barbara (Dedina) Hansen. He graduated with honors from Rock Falls High School in 1932 and later graduated from Hamilton's Business College.

During World War II he was a U.S. Navy Seal and later he was in the National Guard for six years.

Loyd married Maybelle Snopek on November 27, 1937, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manly.

He was employed by Cerro Gordo County for 20 years and retired from First Miss. Fertilizer Plant in 1980. He and his wife traveled in their motor home for many years prior to spending winters in Arizona at their home in Apache Junction. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Maybelle Hansen, Mason City; four children, Terry DeBoom and her husband, Denny, Arlington, Texas, JoDee Martin and her husband, Lincoln, Muscatine, Gary Hansen, Aurora, Colo., and Marilyn Hyde and her husband, Robert, Rock Falls; eight grandchildren, Lee and Ross DeBoom, Beth Martin, Christy and Corene Hansen, Brenda Wernet, Angeleen Marshall, and Randall Hyde; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lorraine Weller, Rock Falls.

Loyd was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Leroy.

ANAHEIM HILLS, Calif. — Mildred M. (Midge) Shaffer, 91, died Nov. 25, 1997, in Anaheim Hills, Calif. Cremation followed.

Mildred Margaret Miller was born July 23, 1906, in Coffeyville, Kan. She was educated in Tulsa, Okla., and at Northwestern University, Chicago, Ill.

She taught physical education at the Y.W.C.A. in Pasadena.

Midge was united in marriage to Gordon Markle Shaffer of New Hampton on Oct. 21, 1927, in Pasadena. They made their home in Pasadena for 64 years, until Mr. Shaffer's death in 1991.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Bob Cooley, Clear Lake, Iowa, and her son and daughter-in-law, Gordon M. and June Shaffer, Placentia, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
