August H. Geske was born on a farm near Enderlin, N.D., on Nov. 13, 1901, the son of August F. and Pauline (Kunst) Geske. He had two older brothers and four younger sisters.

His parents brought him to the Lord in Holy Baptism in early infancy and provided for his growth in the Christian faith and life. He was baptized, confirmed and ordained by the same pastor in the same rural church. The late Pastor Henry Elster was assisted in the ordination rite on June 24, 1929, by August’s brother-in-law, the late Pastor Theophile Fritschel.

August described his decision to enter the ministry as a matter of gradual growth of desire and determination to serve in the Master’s vineyard with the talents he had been given. His home, thorough confirmation instruction and the flu epidemic of 1918, were contributing factors in his decision. The flu epidemic afforded him the opportunity to enroll in a church academy at Eureka, S.D. Four years later, he went to Wartburg College in Clinton and then to the Wartburg Seminary at Dubuque, graduating with the Class of 1929.

On Sept. 5, 1929, he was united in marriage to Meta A. Fritschel in Dubuque, Iowa. Meta was the second daughter of August’s seminary professor, Dr. George Fritschel. The couple was married in the chapel of the Wartburg Seminary. The Lord blessed the marriage with two children, David and Dorcas.

His first assignment was a mission charge at Primghar, Iowa, a rural church. From that starting point, his ministry alternated from self-supporting established congregations to mission charges from northwest to southeast over Iowa. The last mission charge he served as Redeemer Lutheran Church at West Liberty, Iowa. August and Meta’s daughter, Dorcas, and her husband, Fred, were the first couple to be married in that church.

In the fall of 1960, he accepted a call to Hildreth, a small congregation in south central Nebraska. His eight years of service there were the only ones served outside the confines of the state of Iowa. The experience ended his full-time ministry.

In May 1968, he accepted a call to Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake as visitation pastor. The couple enjoyed the Clear Lake community in their later years.

On Oct. 19, 1995, August moved to the Bartles Lutheran Home in Waverly.

August is survived by his daughter, Dorcas Hueners and her husband, Fred, of St. Paul, Minn.; a sister, Emma Wegner, of Wymore, Neb.; four grandchildren, Stephen Hueners and his wife, Paula, of Holmen, Wis., Ethan Hueners and his wife, Colleen, of Hugo, Minn., Elise Geske, of Berkley, Calif., and Matthew Geske and his wife, Page, of Lexington, Kan.; and three great-grandchildren, Joel Bixby, Andrea Geske and David Geske.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Meta in 1987; a son, David Geske; two brothers, Otto and Emil Geske; and three sisters, Frieda Borchardt, Alma Fritz and Martha White.
